From the beginning of 19 century. It is characterized by the presence of Nuestra Señora del Carmen Church, built in 1825, the only two-tower church of the region and one of the three of its kind in the interior of Cuba. Architectonical design expresses the synthesis of an austere baroque and neoclassicism. • Carmen Square is located in Camaguey
  • Camagüey is the birthplace of some of the most relevant personalities of Cuban Culture: Nicolás Guillén, Cuba's Laureate Poet; writer and poetess Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda; Ballet of Camagüey, the second company of Cuba, and the Folkloric Dance Group; famous painters Fidelio Ponce de León and Flora Fong are only some of the examples worth mentioning. Popular festivities like the San Juan Camagüeyano, a traditional festival that started in the 18th century, have transcended until our days.

Camagüey City, the capital of the province, treasures one of the most important historical centers in the country, recently declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO; and is one of the Cuban cities that better preserve the Hispano-Arabic features regarding urbanism and architecture. Its several churches have significant examples of the art and religious-funeral customs of colonial times.

Santa Lucía Beach, located in the northern coast of the easterncentral part of Cuba, is the main tourist destination in Camagüey province. It has some 21km of warm transparent water, fine white sand and a well preserved environment that serves as habitat to important pink flamingos' colonies. It faces the Old Channel of Bahamas, surrounded to the east by Las Tunas province; to the west by the Jardines del Rey archipelago and to the south by the flat lands of Camagüey. The coral formations, located just 2km off the coast, display a surprising biodiversity that invite to contemplate the undersea beauties. There are 35 diving points at Santa Lucía Beach that allow divers meeting with the remains of sunken ships from the 19th and 20th centuries as well as enjoying a curious show in which experienced guides feed with their bare hands friendly sharks near the Nuevitas Bay.

“Don't miss this cute, little square ”
Of course this is a must when visiting Camaguey. Just take a picture of the old guy who was modelling 12 years ago and still looks similar. Just pay him a CUC, he also has to make ends meet... Then join the group of gossiping women, you're free to tell them anything. And also visit some art galeries, really in... More

    “Wonderful spot ”
This square is dominated by life-size bronze statues of people sitting at benches. Around the square is an old church and an interesting gallery of lithography art works. We sure to wonder into the small streets that extend from the square to get what we thought was the best taste of life in a small Cuban city.

“Very quiet and tranquil place - authentic Cuba ”
I walked around the city of Camaguey by foot and really had no plan. I did eventually find this place with its old and beautiful churches and typical cuban living quarters. You can walk around the area and find Cuban locals going about their daily lives. I found it to be very quiet when I was there during the day.... More

“When in Camaguey, a must visit. ”
This plaza was the closest to our Guest house, so it was the first place to visit. It is the most visited place in Camaguey. It features a fine church (Inglesia del Carmen) and the many large scale statues. The church has rather simple interior (see my photo). If you are lucky, the guys, who modeled for the bronze statues,... More

“A very picturesque and quaint part of Camagüey ”
Supposedly not too many tourist visit this remarkable part of Camagüey ? indeed, we were the only ones. The church, Iglesia de Nuestra Seniora del Carmen, is almost 200 years old and was restored several years ago. Adjacent is the building of the old convent, now housing offices of the City Historian, and a school. The church has two towers,... More

“Lots of stuff to see, Church and art galleries should not be missed ”
We enjoyed the life sculptures in the plaza. The church was interesting. There a couple famous art galleries there that should not be missed. We spent at least a couple hours visiting the square and the surrounding galleries.

“Road Scholars visit Martha Jimenez and Plaza del Carmen ”
As part of a two-week Road Scholar People-to-People program, our group spent several days in Camaguey in January and visited the Martha Jimenez Gallery and studio. After a look around the quiet Plaza del Carmen with its beautiful church and freshly painted building facades and inspection of Martha Jimenez's life-sized bronze people, we were greeted by the gracious artist with...
