Founded on March 23, 1962 and under the direction of Norma Faxas in those days, the choir Cantores de Cienfuegos is one of those vocal groups essential for the preservation of a genuinely choral repertoire and tradition.
Their repertoire includes different styles and periods, such as the Renaissance, the Baroque, the Classical and the Romantic, as well as contemporary works from different countries and cultures. They have shared the stage with choirs like Exaudi, Coralina, Sampling, Amantis and other Cuban music groups, as well as with several choirs from other countries like Maestros Casanovas from Spain, Choir Collegium Musicum from Yugoslavia, Phillipines' Madrigal Singers, choir Capella from the Kremlim's Museum in Moscow, University of Victoria's choir from Canada and the Professional Choir Solli Tutti from France.
In the last five years -under the direction of Mileydy Oropesa Rodríguez- this new generation of singers has taken part in important events. For instance, the fourth and fifth editions of the International Choirs' Festival in Santiago de Cuba, the 13th Habaneras and Polyphony Contest in Torrevieja, Spain, the Spring Festivals in Matanzas, the Choral Festival in Montreux, Switzerland and the Folk Festival in Ambert, France.
This is a privileged choir, not only because of the music they cultivate, but also for the love with which they do it. They have been awarded many prizes and important distinctions, such as Second Polyphony Prize in Spain 1998, Sole Prize of the Jury and Prize of the Public in Switzerland 2000, Prize to the Artistic Excellence at Cubadisco 2002 and the Decoration Juan Marinello in 1998.
In the four decades of its existence, this choir has visited the most important theaters and auditoriums in the country. They have also been at international stages -Las Eras de la Sal in Spain and La Chaise-Dieu Abbey in France, among others-, where both, public and the critic, have agreed as to the interpretative quality of this choir.
Every performance of these 16 young singers is filled with elegance and distinction. Their vocal settings in songs like Silvio Rodríguez's Oh Melancolía, Joel Ferrer's Ave María or Antonio Loti's Miserere, surround them with a magic halo.

French émigrés from Bordeaux and Louisiana founded the settlement of Fernandina de Jagua on a large, calm bay on the Caribbean Sea on April 22, 1819. In 1830, when it was upgraded to a town, its name was changed to Cienfuegos, in honor of José Cienfuegos, the Governor-General of Cuba. Fifty years later, it was proclaimed a city and, for its beauty, was called "the pearl of the south." By the end of the 19th century, it had become the fourth most important city in the country.,
Considered the crowning jewel of Cuban architectural in the 19th century, Cienfuegos stands out for the perfect design of its streets and for the refinement and good taste of the buildings in the historic center of the city, which has been declared a national monument. When visiting, stop by the Casa del Fundador (the Founder's House); Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción (Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception) Cathedral; the Tomás Terry Theater; the Ferrer Palace; and the José Martí Park, which contains the only arch of triumph in Cuba.,
Other attractions include the Prado Promenade, the Valle Palace, the museums of Naval and Provincial History, and the Reina (Queen's) Cemetery.,
Farther out from the center of the city, tour the Nuestra Señora de los Angeles de Jagua (Jagua for short) Fortress, the Tomás Acea Cemetery and the Botanical Gardens.,
In addition to these cultural and historic attractions, Cienfuegos has excellent facilities for scuba diving and other water sports, nature tourism and thermal baths.
