The "Varadero Internacional" Hotel was first opened on Christmas Eve, 1950. Built in the solid but elegant architectural style of that period, it still preserves the spirit of those years. The six-story building is located right on the beach in the best part of Varadero and has beautiful gardens. The hotels lobby is large and open, providing stupendous views and direct access to the beach.

Juan Gualberto Gomez Airport was built in 1989 and inaugurated by Fidel Castro,[3] thus replacing the old Varadero airport located in Santa Marta, currently known as Kawama Airport. The airport was named after a journalist, fighter for the Cuban Independence and black rights activist in Cuba Juan Gualberto Gómez (1854–1933). The terminal building has shops for tourists (including rum, cigars, T-shirts, books, carvings, pharmaceuticals), a large departures lounge cafeterias and a VIP lounge. A VIP card is available by paying $30/person to the local tour company representative. This allows the departing passenger to bypass the queues for check-in, have an agent take your departure tax to the correct official for you, and bypass any lines for passport control. The passenger is then taken to the VIP lounge which provides free food and drink (including alcoholic beverages).[4] The ground handling equipment is imported mainly from North America. There are four jet bridges, but air stairs are used for the remaining aircraft parking spaces on the apron by the terminal. Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport (IATA: VRA, ICAO: MUVR), formerly known as Varadero Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto de Varadero), is an international airport serving Varadero, Cuba and the province of Matanzas. The airport is located closer to the city of Matanzas than to Varadero. The closest airport to Varadero is Kawama Airport. In 2009, the airport handled 1.28 million passengers,[2] making it the second busiest airport in Cuba after José Martí International Airport in Havana.

      “Horrible Hotel!”
The only positive thing that I would say about this hotel is that the beach was great & it was like a 20 minute walk to the center of Varadero. First of all i was super pumped to go to Varadero and be in an "all inclusive" hotel but I did not eat once in the hotel being scared of what the kitchen looked like, when went into the Buffet there was a cockroach on the napkin where the spoons where located. The rooms had mold on the walls, spider webs on the walls & ants & cockroaches o crawling around. Lastly some of the employees working there were not nice & others were.

Horrible place, mold in the rooms and not much food in your plate. There isn't much to say except it was a mistake to go there. Loud music is played at the pool and other outdoor sitting areas, not much rest to be had. Staff are polite and quick, but after years of going to Cuba - tbere seem to be a collectve depression with all workers. Mold is common in this hotel.

      “Disappointing”
The hotel is old, but clean. The food is awful, especially for a vegetarian. But the view from our 4th floor room was stunning. One elevator on the west side of the hotel works, the rest do not, but it's healthy to run the stairs many times a day. Staff are friendly especially the security dudes and barman. It's not a high class hotel granted, but it could just be a little updated. Food was not always available at the so called 24 hour cafeteria. I went with my 21 yr old daughter, who couldn't get a sandwich at noon, or couldn't get tomatoes or cheese or some such thing- the rules changed from person to person and from time to time frame- not what was advertised. The beach and the ocean were fantastic so we lost weight and got a great tan- if you care about food and a good room do not choose this hotel.

Yes the beach and staff were great ! , but a 3 star hotel this is not. With out going into great detail about our experience it is sufficient to tell you we had to change hotels after 4days. Best advise we can give is to book a different facility ! ..... we moved next door to the Barcelo Solymar, which turned out to be excellent !

“Looking forward to see the NEW HOTEL.............. ”
We went to Hotel Internacional for the week of The New Year with my dad &his girlfriend, my 8years old daughter & myself. I am the kind of traveller that DO ignore ?some? of the people's review BC i like exploring....but : YES they are starting to rebuild a NEW Hotel in the front but for now, the hotel IS rundown(they do try to keep it CLEAN tho).... The front lobby is very beautiful. You see the ocean right away!! The service was great & everyone is very friendly& super nice! The maids, the bar guys & the tikee bar lady(they are the bests!!!). Our rooms were in a really rough shape tho!The hairdryer was hanging by a thread! Lots of mold & STINKY!! there is mini ants everywhere too! <do bring a mini pug in air-freshener!>There is NO faceclothes & id HIGHLY recommend you bringing your OWN toilette paper!!(few rolls too). The hallways, the stairs & the bedroom were covered with mold & not very clean ?looking?. The BEST THING about this hotel is its small, staff is great & its beach front(absolutely AMAZING). You WILL get mosquito bites & they sure BITE YOU ,you will get ?sores? ..... BRING STRONG BUGSPRAY & AFTERBITE! The worst is in the morning & starting right at 4pm. We went to ?The Cabaret? for dinner &show. NO, its the dinner at 8pm and THEN you have to wait for the show at 10pm. The food was absolutely horrible!!!! We left in the middle of the dinner!!< Lots of time we took off to Varadero downtown to eat dinner!! That was very good food! Remember, you have to PAY 1 convertible peso to go pee downtown!! >There is NO activities AT ALL at this resort. No exercises, (there is a gym but i wouldn?t go here....)no water sports either. They do have great evening shows:) No kids club, no playground(yes there is one but its all rusty & its very dangerous for your kid). The pool isn't really attractive either. MUST DO: Seafari Cayo Blanco. HEAVEN on Earth ! We met few great poeple which help make the trip better!I DON'T recommend this hotel FOR NOW but I will be looking forward to see this NEW Hotel in few years tho! Food: I know this is CUBA....I am not a picky eater & I barely ate.... BREAKFAST -->If you like omelettes, that will be your breakfast for the week. Some days they had pancakes, which were very good. Maybe you will get some fruits in the morning, maybe..... and ..COFFEE!! get your morning coffee at the lobby bar, its the best!! LUNCH--> I suggest you go to the Cafeteria for lunch, They have great burgers & hotdogs, & maybe some fries if your lucky! They have awesome ?cheese &ham sandwiches? too!(& you can get those at 1am when you need a snack). DINNER: hit or miss! They have awesome MEAT !!and whatever else you can find to go with it. Mashed potatoes were good.... you get my point ... I like their bread and butter :)

      “This place sucks. ”
Our first room had jack hammering above us so I bribed the front desk with some dollars to move us to the beach side, and without the sound of waves crashing this would have been unbearable. This place is old, food was just OK. We started exploring Veradero and found many more modern and nicer places that we wished we had booked. Next door was an all inclusive hotel that we hung out most of the time.

      “Terrible ”
Terrible hotel. The food was awful and was the SAME everyday! We found the staff to be very rude, it seemed like serving us a drink or a coffee was a bother. As soon as the buffet opened it was full off staff members eating first. Rooms were terrible half the time the ac didn't work, and the shower either had no hot water or no pressure. They have no phones in the hotel, so if there was ever an emergency and sombody from home needed to get a hold of you your S.O.L. Spend the extra money and go somewhere else! I would NEVER return there! Yes the beach is nice...... But everywhere in cuba the beaches are nice!!!!

“Spend a Couple Dollars More Go To Another Hotel ”
We have stayed in Cuba, Santa Maria before and loved it. The people were great, beaches were awesome. The food we knew that was not going be great but never starved. That is why we went back this year. We decided to come to Varadero to have best parts city and beaches yet still have the friendliness. Boy were we wrong. The beach is beautiful, city is a great experience but this hotel staff is not friendly. We have never felt like such a outsider as here. Seemed like everyone hated there jobs. Exception of one or two staff members. We are tippers and we know how things work but that never made a difference. If you were not a single lady you could stand forever at the bar to get a drink. The pool was dark green not even swim able. You always felt like you were putting them out of there way. Talking to many other people there it was good to find out we were not the only ones. Spend a couple dollars more go to another hotel on the strip. This hotel had nothing to offer but sand and water. The beach is beautiful all along there, so get a hotel where the staff will appreciate you and you to them. We met a lot of tourists and heard great things of other hotels with staff and activities , go to any other place. Do not bring kids to hotel nothing for them.

“Last chance to Visit this Hotel > Closing Down soon. ”
My wife and I booked the Hotel International a week before 31 March 2014 and paid $700 each with Sunwing. Thanks to tripadvisor we knew the hotel is not the best of condition because the hotel is closing down and a new hotel is being built behind it. Tip one, request ocean view or face the dusty construstion site. Room are large and views are the best ever. You will never go hungry here but the food selection is limited and the same daily. Don't forget to book the al a carte. Excellent food there. Also book the free cabaret show and dinner included but they don't tell you. Tip two, its just a short walk to town so go for a beer and have some food down the road. Keep in mind that this hotel was used by the military years ago and then its was the Party Hotel of Vadadero. Gangsters such as Al Capone partied there. Actually his house is just down the street so hop on the Vadadero Express for $5 Cuc and visit his place and have a coffee there. Ocean is safe for swimming here with minor currents. Sand is still clean with a few cigarette butts. If you come here please never litter butts or cups on this lovely beach. This hotel caters to adults usually 40 and older and not suitable for kids. Oh yes for the week we were there the swimming pool was closed. Beer is good and the wine in ok. Liquor is flowing as much as you want. Bring Canadian funds and get conversion at the bank at Areas Blankas just next door or convert your money at the hotel front desk. Don't forget ask for small amounts for tipping.. tips go a long way here. Tip number 3 , visit the Dupont Estate beside the golf course and learn the history. You wont regret it. Bring lots of sunblock cause you will need it. I have said enough but try not to knock this hotel down cause it was history here. Be kind to all people here and do not litter there beach. As we arrived at the hotel and walked to the oceanside we looked around and imagined the gangsters and people here in the 1930's and some people who were staying here are gangster types. All the people who we met here have been here year after year after year and come the same week every year for 20 years..wow. The flavour of gangsterism still lives here. Go Ahead see what I mean. Contact me for qu.

Hotel was very dirty and run down Housekeeping does a great job with what they can but it needs updating Hotel front desk won't help with anything unless you pay them extra as well as anyone else who is employed here The food is barely edible Location is very close to downtown thank god as at least you can walk close to eat food which shouldn't have to happen at an all inclusive Asked for manager never was able to speak with him Sunwing excursions are a scam and reps are hard to take as all they want is more tips after you have paid for excursion don't tip the people involved with excursions or staff at hotel They don't need it they don't work hard or do anything extra to deserve it and are the wealthiest people on the island It's sad that the Cubans want only to take advantage of the niceties of Canadians When the day comes that Americans come into this country for vacations the whole dynamic will change and vacations in Cuba as well as the food will improve tenfold as that's what should be demanded for what you pay

      “3 star overated ”
Having been to Cuba before, we knew when we booked this hotel that you get what you pay for. Having said that, this hotel maybe a 2 star at the very best. Really, really run down! Beautiful beach and view from our room{ 4th floor}. Drinks were very good {sometimes too strong} bartenders and cleaning staff were very friendly. Food was terrible, four of us got food poisoning, you don't want this especially when the elevator did not work for 7 days. Security people {very corrupt} were always hitting up the "hard working" ground workers for their cut of any tip money, shirts or hats that we would give them.We saw this occur repeatedly! Location required a taxi ride all the time. Front end staff were pleasant at best. On the last day of our stay they requested that I "must" leave my passport with them so that I would return my hotel towel before I depart. Not a chance at this joint! Thank god there were other Canadians there who made our stay enjoyable. To any traveler considering staying at this hotel... stay away.... you have been honestly warned!

The hotel was built in 1950 and has not been kept up. Only one of the three elevators was working. The food was terrible and there was no internet. As usual, the Cuban people were wonderful and the location close to downtown and on a beautiful beach was excellent. Recommend staying at a privately owned hotel instead of a government owned hotel.

      “Still old charm ”
First of all, let us start by saying that this Hotel will be demolish fairly soon...SADLY! Since it has the BEST beach front line (by far) of the whole of Varadero! The gorgeous giant gardens are now mostly a construction site for the new Hotel. This is the first Hotel built in Varadero in 1952. Gorgeous architectural style and the spectacular beach is right in the lobby! The rooms are HUGE and the staff VERY friendly!. Due to the future demolish of the hotel I suppose, or poor maintenance, it does need a LOT of cosmetics fixes. New painting, bathrooms need to be treated....but nothing major. The Hotel is quiete and we had an overall good experience. The Show at the Cabaret is definitely worth it! WE only HOPE, that the statues of Christopher Columbus and Queen Isabel at the entrance of the beach will be PRESERVED, as well as the different and beautiful antiques around the lobby. Food does not have much variety or quality...but hey, remember how much you pay! Negative: The music in the terrace by the beach is extremely loud and of very poor taste. Lots of "regueton" which could be VERY annoying. The animator is not doing a very good job considering we asked him a couple of times for a music change and nothing happened.

      “Crumbling hotel, great views ”
I booked a package with Sunwing and the Internacional was part of the deal. I can't say I was very impressed when I walked in, our all inclusive package suddenly had a whole bunch of extras we needed to pay for and the hotel is definitely showing its age, crumbling around the edges and a whole bunch of things not working. But within a couple of hours the hotel certainly grew on me. Much of what I found is in line with the other reviews on this site: unimaginative food and a crumbling facility. I would add that the beds weren't particularly comfortable and our room smelt of cigarette smoke. However, the view from our room more made up for the smell. Our fifth floor room had a spectacular view of the water. In fact, I am curious to see how they will recapture this aspect with the new hotel they are building which is set in front of the current hotel (further from the beach - back end of the hotel buts onto the ocean). Another plus: pay the CUC$20 and go snorkelling with George and George down on the beach. A father/son team, you pay them to take you out on a small catamaran to a spot well off the shore. The area there is positively teeming with fish and it is a great activity. My suggestions: You should not need to pay extra for an ocean view room (despite Sunwing's misguidance). As another review mentioned, if you are polite and friendly to the reception staff and simply ask during check-in, they are likely to accommodate your request. Bring mosquito repellent and strong sunscreen. The doors in the lobby and common areas are left open all the time. I for one am apparently mosquito food because every night I would get attacked like there was no other guests around me! This brings me to my second point (because I couldn't buy mosquito repellent): BRING LOTS OF CASH. Seriously. If your bank is even slightly affiliated with an American bank you will not be able to book or pay anything, neither will you be able to withdraw money. Take enough to do at least three or four activities, this will set you back between CAD$150-250 depending on what you wish to do. Also, you will want to tip the staff and guides on your tours if they are very helpful. I would also recommend that you change your money at the airport or walk along to one of the banks in Varadero. The hotel exchange rates are not monitored, for example: the banks were exchanging CAD$1 to CUC$0.88 (convertible Cuban pesos) where as the hotel was doing it at CUC $0.82. Might be an extra five dollars that you get from changing at the bank, but for a student this was a big deal for me on my limited budget. If you are looking for a luxury holiday at a cheap price, do not go to this hotel. It is many things but luxurious is not a word that fits it any more. Please feel free to contact me if you have any more questions.

“An experience I would not have missed ”
The Varadero Internacional is a great old lady of a hotel, she's seen better days and is a bit tatty, but still has the charm of past greatness. Ask for a room with sea view. You pay a little more but you sleep with the sound of the waves crashing onto the beach as the hotel is right bang on the beach, and you step off the terrace onto fine white sand which stretches for miles in each direction. This is a real Cuban experience. When we were there only one lift was working and it was impossible to get a plug for the bath, but the room was clean and comfortable, the staff were really freindly and helpful, and the food was basic but nutritious and healthy ( i.e. we didn't have any digestive problems.) The hotel is being redeveloped soon. The part of the hotel that was away from the beach has been demolished and was just an empty lot when we were there, in march 2014, but it will be built on soon. The main building is the original 1950s hotel and I hope they keep that when the rest is rebuilt as it has a lot of character but it's possible they will build a completely new hotel further away from the water and then demolish the old lady. So you need to get in soon to get the real 1950s experience! We stayed three nights at the start of a touring holiday travelling round Cuba. I don't know that I would have wanted to stay much longer but it was the perfect start to our holiday, and we left wanting more. What makes it so special is that beach, it's probably the best beach I've ever known. Miles of clean sand, with warm, turquoise water, and not at all crowded. I thought I was in paradise!.

This hotel is directly on the beautiful playa del este, the hotel is old but our room was clean, We had a bit of toilet problem but after telling the staff, it was quickly taken cared off. The food was not what you would get on a cruise ship but again it was grown in Cuba which mean mainly organic and fresh , we loved that. The staff was top, helpful, friendly.

“There are enough reviews that everyone will know what they are getting!”
If you have read my other reviews you know I try to give good details and thoughts. This hotel presented a great challenge because some elements were truly terrible, while other elements ranged from Average to Excellent so after considering all my experiences I came up with one final consideration, how much it cost. After all it's not fair to compare this hotel to a Four Seasons or an Intercontinental at maybe 10%, 5% or less of the price. So here goes. I just returned from 7 days at this property, among the party I was traveling with we had three rooms and a fourth that was moved out of after one day. Rooms: They were adequately clean, although issues such as staining on the taps and fixtures, loss of silvering on the mirrors, worn furniture, walls in need of paint, or smells from the air conditioner could leave this in doubt. Maintenance is an entirely different matter, I witnessed rooms where guests were locked in or out and locks wouldn't function, in my room I tried to move the swivel light over the bed to be able to read better with the very low wattage bulb and the fixture fell off the wall, I actually had a phone handset in my room even plugged in, not that it did any good, no phone calls from rooms were allowed or able. Likewise no internet other than a computer off the lobby with 1 dial up computer at 5CUC per 30 minutes, SLOW!! Back to the rooms, my room had a hairdryer, hanging from a nail, don't know if it worked the bathroom plug didn't and neither did the light over the sink. speaking of sink, no way to stop the water for washing or shaving. Imagine all 3 rooms had bidets, none of them worked but they were there. Couldn't tell if the black on the walls and ceilings were mold, dirt or age, but after moving out of the first room, the mold smell went away. A/C 2 out of 3 didn't work. They did start working on fixing one on the last day. Mini fridges did work well and the housekeeping did keep us all well stocked in large water bottles. All three TV's worked to varying degrees with two English channels: CTV and CNN. Rooms were huge, my first room had a King Bed AND a double, other rooms were the same size with King beds, however, sheets didn't really fit and we all woke in the mornings with sheets pulled off mattress. All rooms had three small bath towels (or large hand towels you take your choice) regardless of number of guests. Food: The buffet was open 2 hours, 3 times a day. Breakfast never changed much with omelets the fresh choice everyday with ham, cheese, green peppers, tomatoes and onions as filling choices. If the liver was fresh cooked to order it could be quite good (I was told) in the steam table, not so much. Lunches and dinners had little flavour or taste to them, pasta could be an acceptable choice some days, there were usually 2 or 3 choices of meat to have cooked, everything else came from the steam tables, dessert didn't change much other than some days donuts were sugar other days chocolate dipped. Ice cream ranged from Vanilla, Strawberry to Mango. Maybe cookies or rather bland squares or cakes. The 20 hour a day cafeteria offered the same 4 or 5 choices every day at the same meals if they had the required parts; no french fries after day 2, no hamburger buns after day 5, no hamburgers on day 6, lots of hot dogs. We did have the choice of dining in the a la carte dining room twice during our stay, unfortunately, we had to book with the PR desk who came in at nine but wouldn't take reservations before 10. By then we were often gone and not back before he left, not there on weekends, this meant we had limited access to make reservations...wish we could have phoned. We did make it to the Cabaret one night which I will review separately. Drinks and bars: Three bars offered a basic range of cocktails in small plastic glasses, beer and wine served in same small plastic glasses. One bar out on patio, one at the pool and one off the main lobby, with table and a very stained pool table with two cues well past their prime and no chalk. That was it for inside entertainment. If there were any types of lessons or special events included they were never advertised or promoted. Water: The pool was huge and quite nice, especially outside prime hours. The beach was without equal I think the best on Varadero, no other hotel offers a short walk through the lobby to a huge patio overlooking their beach which is then a easy walk to the water. This hotel was built to be a sister to the Fountainbleu and offers a style from days gone by. Personally, I would love to see this resort restored to a deluxe boutique resort, with its location it would offer a style incomparable with anything on Varadero.

This hotel is one of those " What you make of it " hotels , it is one of the older hotels in Varadero with both it's charms & letdowns . The charms of the Hotel are the arcitecture in the main building & reception area the location of the hotel in proximity to the beach & ocean , you are steps away from the beach & the oceanview romms are the best & the hotel staff . This is a smaller hotel & is easy to get around . The letdowns are the decay of a once beautiful buliding & the average hotel it's become .

“A piece of history just steps from the beach”
This is just barely a 3 star but we had hot water, a clean room and very good service for a cheap 1 week stay. Glad I was prepared for food that wasn't the best. We had omelettes and wonderful toasted homemade bread with great juice for breakfast, Cuban burgers (burger w/fried egg) for lunch by the pool and walked into town for a couple of suppers because the suppers weren't very appetizing. I could put myself back in time and imagine what this place was like in the 50?s. Being only a few steps from the white sandy beach was amazing. Of course you could drink as little or as much as you wanted. Liked the Coconut Rum in Piña Coladas that are far superior to those in Mexico. The wine was fairly good too. Glad we had the experience of staying here just in case this piece of history is torn down in the near future. We met wonderful people in this smaller hotel. Don't set your expectations too high, prepare to take in some of Varadero's private charming restaurants and go for the history!

“I'll Take the Beach Over Luxury ”
Sure it's a 1950's relic that is slated for the chopping block, food is basic,as with rooms, elevator and shops, and the back side hasn't been painted since a while. They have a new 985 room one slated for this location. However if the price is right, this is a rough gem. You are about 10 steps away from a pristine beach,a beach where you can pull a lounge chair up to the waters edge,a beach you can walk to 24 7. Grab a drink from the bar on the way down to the beach anytime. Not many taxis hang around, but you can walk to the hotel next for 1, plus since the beach is so close to downtown you can take a horse and carriage and enjoy the ride as that service is available. The pool area is very good as well, but it isn't shaped with trees and sit down bars..however it is good for sunning and laps. Beach Towels can be hard to come by,so grab one at the pool and save it for your stay. I rated it very good, but not for the reasons most would rate a resort. You need to enjoy pure relaxation without all the usual resort activities and just want a room,a beach and easy access to Varadero town for excursions. Part of the Hotel is a night club/ disco and show, which can be a difficult commode to find in some places. You can probably guess that I did not spend too much time in my room, and on this occasion,it served me fine.

“It's all about the beach ”
Stayed here June 2014 4 nights. The hotel is 60 years old and they are building a new 900 room replacement as we speak but it may be years before it's finished. So with a new one in the offing they are not spending any pesos on the old one. It's rough! (and it leaks). The food is adequate by Cuba standards but we dined fairly well in the attached a la carte restaurant every night. Everything is included as with (so it seems) all beach resorts - room, drinks three meals a day etc.(including that a la carte restaurant). We had a beach front room, ranch sliders to the balcony on the ground floor. Nothing flash, but tidy and liveable. The air conditioning works well and so it must because it's hot and humid. Lots of Cubans use the beach and it seems to be a budget package holiday mecca for people from everywhere. We met a guy who said he paid CAN$780 for two weeks here! Very close to Varadero; bus stops outside the gate. Five minutes to the shopping plaza and another five the other way to the golf course and upmarket hotel/shopping complex. BUT guys - it's all about THE BEACH. In June it was quiet and we just hung out on the beach every day. Don't know what another reviewer means by there being "not much" food. Meals are all buffet and there's enough food to feed a couple of battalions - not top of the range stuff but perfectly acceptable. As for cleanliness, I rate the staff highly. I dropped a serving spoon while serving myself something and quietly put it on the table beside me after I picked it up off the floor. One of the lurking staff whisked it away in seconds and replaced it. These staff will fetch you drinks from the bar while you dine. The bar is superb and is open 22 hours. Closes from 6am to 7 am and again 6pm to 7pm. There's a bar on the beach, a cafe on the terrace - snack food, superb coffee delivered with friendly service. There's another bar and cafe in the pool area. The place is very well guarded, the staff are helpful and very friendly and their English is good. We would go here again but I am picking that this hotel might be fairly uncomfortable in the high season. If you go with low expectations you will be rewarded big time. The beach is fabulous and just a few short paces from the action. I forgot - the entertainment is really good. I didn't like the recorded music booming out all day but you get used to it. But in the evenings the entertainment turns live and it was really great! Cuban music, Carribean music, dancing, and even a magician one night. Don't be a snob - try roughing it a bit - and LOVE that beach! Suggest a ground floor room as far away from the entertainment area as you can get it - and pay for beachfront!

      “Really enjoyed our stay ”
Some of the reviews of this place almost put us off it -I am glad we still went. I thought it was really good value for the money. Yes it is a bit faded, but our room and bed was massive and the facilities were fine. The staff were very friendly and we could still get some food when we arrived exhausted at 11.00 p.m. The food was consistently interesting - with something freshly cooked at every meal. The beach was brilliant and as we had booked an ocean view, we always had it our sights. It was lovely to watch pelicans and frigate birds performing graceful acrobatics over the water and we even saw a humming bird in the trees by the hotel. We syayed five nights and found plenty to do in the local area. A brilliant place to end up in after a 23 hour journey.

“Always a great time at the Hotel Internacional Varadero ”
We have stayed at this Grand Old Hotel the Internacional Varadero 13 times over the years and will be returning again this spring , We travel to Cuba twice a year . We have stayed at 7 other resorts in Varadero in the earlier year but now cannot imagine ever going to Varadero and stay anywhere else other than the Internacional as long as this old girl is open for business . The staff at the hotel are the best and have become good friends of ours , with every visit we are welcomed with open arms , hugs and kisses . This hotel is 64 years old but is still standing proudly right on the best stretch of beach in Varadero . Wide beach , White sands , And turquoise blue waters that you can walk far out into and frolic in the warm waters on a pure sand bottom . This hotels age does create a few problems , no doubt , occasional hot water issues , a few leaks here and there in the lobby bar during heavy down pours , but hey , the place is 64 years old and has character that the newer hotels will never have . The staff is always working hard , repairing , painting etc. to keep the old girl looking good , The hotel has one buffet that has food that we find satisfactory for a 3 star hotel , a snack bar that has great breakfasts , sandwiches , burgers and ice cream , if it is busy enough they have a lunch grill pool side . and there is on alacarte in the evening that has delicious food . The hotels rooms are large rooms with a walk in closet and if you get a ocean side room you will have the best ocean view in Varadero . The hotel is literally right on the beach . The Hotel Internacional ( 3 star ) is not for the howdy towdy fancy smancy , but if you are beach bums like us and want to be close to town and a step off the beach , want to be treated with respect and friendship by a great staff and have great views and good times then the Internacional might be worth a look . “Great Price-Great Beach-Great Location ”
Grabbed this as a last minute short deal out of Halifax. Couldn't pass up the deal after the winter and spring we are having. I knew what to expect going in as I had read reviews, pictures and had visited the amazing disco on site on previous stays at other resorts. I received great service from all including the front desk, bellboys, bartenders in the lobby bar. By the 2nd day they knew what I wanted and remembered. I had also emailed the resort ahead of time asking if it was possible to get an oceanview room. Upon arrival received top floor oceanview! The beach here was amazing. Not only the actual beach, but even out into the ocean. Water was as clear as a bathtub and equally as warm. Sand was soft for as far out as you could go. No seaweed or debris floating around the ocean or beach. No problem to get a chair or hut at anytime. The food was fairly limited, but I know this about 3 star resorts generally. I could always find something to eat, plus the "cafeteria" had some good snacks so I was never hungry. Rooms were basic but clean. Some issues with water pressure from time to time. But with a little patience, these things where not big deals. Location was great, walking distance into Varadero every evening to check out entertainment. Saved alot staying here on cabs. Was a short walk and enjoyed it each evening. Overall this was a great stay, which was made that way by the beach, the price and the location. I would not hestitae to come back again here for a great deal. New resort is supposed to open in 2017 they are saying, but it is Cuba so who knows. Enjoy this resort while you can!

      “People like to complain. ”
I am a repeat tourist to the Internacionel of more than 7 years. Warm friendly atmosphere from the staff. Housekeeping is very good. The rooms are huge, but antiquated and showing signs of 60 years service. The food buffet is just that; buffet food. But always fresh salads and fruit. Warm buffet table always includes a good assortment. But if you don't like the food, spend $5 CUC and get a meal downtown. By far the best value for your dollar in Varadero. I've always said, "those that complain about the food, can't wait to get to their closest MacDonalds to eat". Currently going through construction of new hotel, but it doesn't impact the current venue. I just came back from a 2 week stay that cost me $1233. Most tourists were very happy with their experience at the Internacionel. Those that weren't were complaining about the lack of beef in the restaurant. It's too simple, if you expect good Canadian beef; don't leave Canada. The benefits of the Internacionel include the 15 minute walk to the Beatles Restaurant and Bar for the Rock and Roll jam every night at 10 pm (VERY GOOD), or the Calle 62 experience, or the Parc Johsone or Parc Amusement with the locals. If walking isn't your thing, a short cab ride at a nominal cost is in the offering. The beach offering is by far the best in Varadero. The bar experience is like home coming week. The Continental Cabaret is a nice experience for those who haven't seen it before. And the a la carte is very good. If you expect to spend most of your time in your hotel room while in Varadero, I'm sure there is much better places. But if you're looking for value in your dollar, you can't beat the Internacionel. They have the best DJ on the scene. The bartenders never forget you or what you are drinking. But if you're the person that is tight to the wallet and want your 5 star experience cause you paid for an all inclusive holiday; you too may be one of those that opt to complain. But if you're looking for a friendly environment that provides you with the necessities of a good vacation, the Hotel Internacionel will more than meet your needs.

I have been a repeat client at this hotel for many years...coming with family and friends. This warm and friendly hotel is extremely hospitable and has the feel of a home away from home. The majority of staff here go out of their way to be very helpful and to ensure a memorable HAPPY HOLIDAY.! BEACH LOVERS- Keep in mind, this is a 3 star plus hotel with a 5 star plus beach! The hotel location is prime in Varadero, centrally situated on one of the finest beaches in the carribean! A great stretch of powdery white sand, gorgeous baby blue turquoise waters and a sandbar that goes out quite a ways-so very safe to swim in, also a pleasure to walk. MUSIC AND DANCE LOVERS This hotel has the best TROPICANA SHOW in their CONTINENTAL CABERET located at the front of the hotel-an amazing show with unbelievable gyrating dancers, dazzling colourful costumes and the best music ever!-a show not to be missed! Truly a superb, fantastic Cuban experience. This hotel is older, charming, a historic landmark built in the 50's.The rooms are clean and spacious. It truly is good value for dollar. As long as this hotel stands, I will continue coming here for a vacation. A place I consider my second home,

Off the top of my head - no order... Print this: Your packing essentials: nutella, peanut butter, hot sauce, beach towels, sunscreen, hair products, strawberry jam, chips and crackers.. and a large drink container. You'll thank me later. Exchange money- bank is around corner from this hotel - front desk will give you a good rate of exchange but bank is always better and will give you singles for tips. Please say hello to Felix - he'll bring you to your room, Anita- Front desk manager who loves to speak francais, waiting staff in buffet restaurant (Hector) - awesome people (one waitress made a peanut fudge for me from scratch) Security staff are there to make sure no one gets onto premise so when you walk beach expect other hotel security to look for your bracelet. Room is large- ask for one on 5th floor, with king bed away from outside entertainment noise - use google translate and give that to front desk staff when you arrive... smile and wait. Also ask for towels NOW -you'll be given a ticket to bring to the poolside where Oswaldo will give you your towels. Bring towels with you when you check out-or pay 25$ per towel. Pool is great for kids. Pool bar tender loves to converse- nice man all round. Take the hobie cat out and do the snorkeling - ask George to take you. I found the nicest orange conches about 6 feet out in middle of hotel beach area. Make sure nothing is inside them. The food is good. This is Cuba people. You can exchange your large water bottle for another at the bar. So don't throw it out!! My guy grabbed a plate and went to the grill. Make to order. Fish, beef, pork. There is always a pasta dish, fruits and bread. Coffee (espresso, americano or latte) at all bar locations. Loved the frozen lemonade... and pina colada slushy. Water pressure at this older hotel is about a quarter of what we get here. So do shower when people are eating or at beach. The beach has gorgeous sand. Look up the history of this hotel... people who come here are flexible, tolerant and friendly. I went specifically to relax and that's what I had. Do not allow your kids to run or yell in the halls- security will put an end to it. Your room telephone will not work- if you need something ask your room housekeeper or front desk for a wake up call on departure morning. They are building a new hotel out front - my guess 3 years before completion.

The staff was exceptional - everyone went out of their way to make us comfortable. You get what you pay for and the Internacional exceeded my expectations. I enjoyed the food and the entertainment, and our second floor (or 3rd) room was fine. Loved the ocean view and the sound of the surf. Couldn't have found a better location and the hotel was far from crowded so no waiting for amenities. Met some great people, both guests and staff. I went to this hotel the week of new years eve with two of my friends and we had a great time. The staff is wonderful, the hotel is clean, the beach is beautiful and we had no problems with eating. The food is actually better than what i've had in cuba previous times I went. The beach atmosphere is very relaxing compared to the barcelo which is right next door. I also really liked that you are able to change your money at the front desk whenever you want, it's very convenient. This hotel is a great choice especially for the price it's at. You can see the beach from the lobby and it's two steps away which is great. They are doing construction to the building but I didn't have any issue with that it doesn't really effect your time there. If you're looking to party, you get free cover to the club that is attached to it so thats great too. If you aren't picky and know what to expect from every hotel in cuba, then you will have absolutely no problem here. I had a great time and would definitely return to this hotel.

Yes it is an old facility, but just like they do with there vintage cars, Cubans keep this resort running. The first resort at Veradero, a fabulous beach just off the terrace no vendors. Cuban style meals which were quite nice overall. Service was great all round. Pool area very nice. Sprucing the place up again so it looks good. We arrived on a Sunday were concerned. Seemed like a ghost town. But it was November and Cuban day off so bare bones stall. Monday came...things took shape. Would love to return before it's torn down. Oh yeah..short walk to town. This hotel, just steps away from the town of Varadero, is perhaps the oldest on the strip. It has old Cuba charm and a pile of history. It is slated to be torn down in a few years. For that reason it is not being renovated, however, a new coat of paint was just applied. The service is friendly and the food is ok (we never left hungry). This hotel is right on the beach, so you can sit on the massive deck and still see (and hear) the ocean. A short walk into town is always nice on those cooler days, where new restaurants are popping up and the markets flourish. It is easy to meet new people here in this relaxing and friendly environment.

Second time at the Internacional and would go back in a heartbeat. The location and great staff more than make up for the tired condition at the hotel. If you are looking for a basic hotel that is small in size and literally right on the beach then this is an excellent pick. Keep in mind it is one of the least expensive hotels in Varadero so if you are looking for gourmet cuisine and manicured grounds you will not get that here. What you do get is an amazing location on the beach (literally 60 seconds from the beach to your room,90 if the elevator isn't working) and as friendly a staff as i have met anywhere in Cuba. Our room was comfortable and clean (hot water and a/c worked) and the bar staff was terrific. One thing i notice about most Cuban people is that they respond far better to friendly people so take the time to learn thier names and chat with them when there is a chance because it may open up a whole new experience of your trip. If you do decide to try this hotel and have room in your luggage, bring an old baseball glove or two for Joseph the night security guard. He coaches a couple of kids teams and alot of the kids can't afford their own glove.

“Another Great Vacation at The International ”
Returned again this year for another 2 week vacation at the International. That makes this 4 years in a row now. We were there April 6th to the 20th. The beach and weather were wonderful. We were happy to see that most of the staff are still there. Anita and Saberto on the front desk could not be nicer. Always happy to give you a smile and a warm greeting. When we arrived on the evening of April 6th we were warmly greeted and welcomed back. This hotel while old has so much charm and character. We will sadly miss the place after they tear it down to build a huge 974 room boutique hotel. It seems that this will happen sometime in the next 3 years. The new place will not sit on the water but rather closer to the road and will have 2 pools. If you choose this hotel know that it is not the Melia. This hotel while tired is clean and safe. The food is not the best on the island but you will not starve. There is the 24 hour Cafeteria as well as the A la Carte. When we travel to Cuba we bring peanut butter, jam, cup a soup and snacks for the days when we are feeling peckish or missing home. You can also try the Pizza Piazzzza or the Fondue House. Both places are great value and good food. We also fill the fridge in our room with cold drinks and a large bottle of water. The shows on the terrace in the evening are the best in Varadero. The dance troupe which appears 4 out of the 7 nights a week is superb. The band that plays the other 2 nights is some of the best music you will hear on the island. They have a great animation team lead by Alberto for the day time entertainment. Lots of silly games to play on the terrace in the afternoon. The beach at this hotel is one of the finest. Grab a hut and lounger on the beach in the morning and enjoy the day!

“Thank you Hotel Internacional for another brilliant vacation! ”
We have stayed at this hotel 6 times and there are a number of reasons we keep going back. First and foremost is the staff. They have become old friends and the accusation of inappropriate behavior towards one of the guests in an earlier review is distressing and difficult to believe. I have never experienced or witnessed anything but gentlemanly behavior from the bar staff and I have high regard for them. The age of the hotel can't be disputed or corrected at this point, it is undeniably old. At one time it was a distinctive building and it has a rich and colourful history, but it is not a good fit for travellers looking for a pampered experience. It is more suited to folks who can appreciate it's historic value and diminished grandeur. It has the best location, best beach and best views to be found in Varadero. For people like us this makes it a prime place to stay. With every visit to this hotel we come away with a new appreciation for the challenges the staff face on a day to day basis trying to deal with rude, obnoxious, unrealistic and even aggressive patrons. What many visitors don't know about Cuba is that it has one of the highest literacy rates in the world and it is quite likely that the people who work in the hotel you are staying at are better educated than you are. Condescention is an international language that is not lost on these smart people. I find Cuban people to be honest, socially sophisticated, and very family oriented and I feel honoured to be welcomed into their country. I always find the buffet at this hotel offers many pleasing choices. People will qualify a negative food review by claiming to not be "picky" but I will in all honesty can say that I am indeed a picky eater and I still have no trouble enjoying the buffet as there is enough selection to satisfy me.

I visited this hotel less than a week ago along with my sister and 2 nieces and we all loved it!! The hotel is definitely old and dated but it was clean and so that was the main thing.. If you are looking for fancy, don't come here but if you're looking for a quiet, relaxing, ocean-front hotel this is the place to come to! All the staff were very friendly to us (Yoandy, Amowlee, Alberto just to name a few) They all went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable! We had an ocean view room and it was spectacular! I don't think you can get much more ocean-front than this place! The food at the buffet and cafeteria was always ok, nothing fancy again but definitely edible..We ate at the a la carte restaurant one night and that was delicious!! It's very close to town (walking distance) which is nice also! To summarize.. I would come back here in a heart beat!

This was my fifth time at this property and again it was a great experiance. I understand the limitations Cuba offers to its guests and my vacation was wonderful. This property is relatively small and it makes for a much more personal feeling. The staff all remembered us bigger hotels have a hard time doing this. I speak for my sisters in saying a personal thank you to Anita for her assistance in helping us get our favored rooms, to the bellman (sorry forget his name) he was more than helpful throughout the week, to the bartenders Victor and Oseal who never left us waiting for our beverages and the pina colada lady who worked the hut off the patio area who made the most yummy drinks and lastly but not least Mary the room attendant on the fifth floor who is so sweet. Oooppps I must not forget Omowee the security guard who always met us with a smile. These people make my holiday. The rooms are tired and there are issues with the building however while we were there they were painting and painting..........there was already new patio furniture purchased for the up coming season. There is construction slated to happen within the next few years outside this building which has put into question what is to become of this building. This property has an amazing history and if it were anywhere else in the world people would fight to preserve it. I hope that happens. Anyway the food was surprisingly better than the last time I was here two years ago. We never left the buffet hungry. We did go into town as it is within walking distance and enjoyed a fabulous lunch at the Barracuda ( I will review it also) This hotel is I believe the closest to waters edge than any other. You walk off the lounge level off two steps to the beach and 150 ft to the waters edge. We were greeted with pristine water the first day and walked out as far as we wanted and still could see our toes............the next days there were huge waves and red flags but the pool served as a great alternative. We were back in the ocean for the rest of our holiday. I am a fan favorite and would hate to see anything happen to this hotel, I plan another trip in the near future. All the best to the Hotel Internacional team you should be proud of doing what you can with the limitations you have however your hotel is still one of my favorites! See you again soon!

      a little old hotel
The Varadero Internacional Hotel, one of the oldest hotels in the world-famous coastal resort of the same name, is located on the beach characterized by its tranquil, crystal-clear waters and fine sand. The establishment is two kilometers from downtown Varadero and 30 kilometers from Juan Gualberto Gómez International Airport. The environment surrounding the hotel, specialized in traditional tourism, is complemented by large green areas and a beautiful beach strip that is just 50 meters from the hotel, in one of the best zones in Varadero.
