Juan Gualberto Gomez Airport was built in 1989 and inaugurated by Fidel Castro,[3] thus replacing the old Varadero airport located in Santa Marta, currently known as Kawama Airport. The airport was named after a journalist, fighter for the Cuban Independence and black rights activist in Cuba Juan Gualberto Gómez (1854–1933). The terminal building has shops for tourists (including rum, cigars, T-shirts, books, carvings, pharmaceuticals), a large departures lounge cafeterias and a VIP lounge. A VIP card is available by paying $30/person to the local tour company representative. This allows the departing passenger to bypass the queues for check-in, have an agent take your departure tax to the correct official for you, and bypass any lines for passport control. The passenger is then taken to the VIP lounge which provides free food and drink (including alcoholic beverages).[4] The ground handling equipment is imported mainly from North America. There are four jet bridges, but air stairs are used for the remaining aircraft parking spaces on the apron by the terminal. Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport (IATA: VRA, ICAO: MUVR), formerly known as Varadero Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto de Varadero), is an international airport serving Varadero, Cuba and the province of Matanzas. The airport is located closer to the city of Matanzas than to Varadero. The closest airport to Varadero is Kawama Airport. In 2009, the airport handled 1.28 million passengers,[2] making it the second busiest airport in Cuba after José Martí International Airport in Havana.

“Nice holiday, hotel just ok. ”
Just returned from a week at the Playa de Oro. Weather was great and so was the beach. The Hotel however, is undergoing some renovation. Our rooms were recently painted and I believe the bathrooms have been upgraded. They are kept very clean, but the mattresses and furniture could use an upgrade. Bathroom/shower excellent. Air conditioning worked nicely. TV, not Hi-def but sufficient. Food at this hotel was acceptable if you went early, otherwise, they did not replenish very well. Buffet restaurant table and chairs MUST be replaced or cleaned VERY WELL. Lots of bird droppings on the pedestal of the tables, chairs very stained. Not appetizing at all. Food selection very minimal. Lobby bar servers were very nice, however no premiumn drinks included and white wine ran out frequently. Coffee was very good.

      “Exceeded Expectations ”
Went to Playa de Oro on a last minute trip on my own. After reading a lot of reviews I kept my expectations pretty low, but almost everything here exceeded my expectations! The staff were amazing, the beach was stunning, a quick bus ride into the Varadaro city (5$ round trip - for a hop on/ hop off), the food was decent (you don't go to Cuba for the food they say) Plenty of variety, just not a whole lot of spice. I saw loads of people brought Hot Sauce. The room wasn't the best. But was clean and tidy. Had a pool side room on the ground floor. With quick access to the beach! Loads of daily activities offered. The entertainment staff is non stop (and loads of fun) - Loads of Poolside/beach activities (Volleyball, Salsa Lessons, Spanish Lessons, Ring toss, Soccer, etc) Then the evenings are jam packed with Live music and dancing, games and then a different live show every night. Never a moment to having nothing to do! I would go back to the resort next time, great value and experience, great location.

“Hotel very clean, activity people superb! ”
We went on October 29th 2014, got a really good deal, but have been to Cuba 4 times before so did not expect the food to be great. The food was really not great but I never went from the table hungry. This was a slow time for them so maybe that is why they didn't have much of a variety of food, and it always seemed to be just warm or cold not hot. The hotel itself was very clean the rooms were quite sparse but very clean and the maid was wonderful. The grounds were very well kept and the pool was constantly being cleaned, it was beautiful. Most of the help were very friendly but the entertainment crew were exceptional, they knew us by name (could be because there weren't that many people there) they treated my husband exceptionally well as he has problems with arthritis in his knees and can't get up and down very well. We had a wonderful morning going on the double decker bus which we could get at the end of our street. It only cost $5 pesos and it goes around the whole inlet and you can get off and on as many times as you like. Shopping in Varadero was fun and interesting. We didn't take any extra day trips because of my husbands condition. The beach was wonderful and the water was beautiful when we could go into it. Pretty windy a couple of days. This was definitely not a 5 star or maybe not even a 4star but for the money we paid it was well worth it. Even had elevators going up to the 4th floor which we were on. I think if I got it again for the same price I might go back again, I know that another couple we met were certainly thinking of going back again and they had friends that recommended it to them. Most of the people seemed to enjoy their meals, I am a little bit of a health nut and found things a little to greasy, the turkey we had one night was wonderful, so tender and the spare ribs were also good but they ran out before I could go up for another helping. The omlets were great for breakfast but no peanutbutter. I know a lot of reviews were not good but if you go without having great expectations for the food you can have a great time.

“Hotel good ... Loved the beach ”
We visited as a family. Rooms a little dated, food was surprisingly very bland... Sadly. The entertainment was mediocre. But the pool bar was good and the midday snacks and beach restaurant there better. I loved the beach although it not very deep... Driving in one of the American taxis was an experience. We enjoyed it and met some very nice people but would not return to same hotel.

      “Great Vacation!! ”
We got to the hotel. The lobby was very inviting. Open air. It was nice! Our rooms were ready right away. The rooms were nice. We stayed in 2116 overlooking the pool. The room was nice. 2 beds. Nice clean washroom and shower. No complaints about the room. Everything we needed and clean. The food in the main buffet wasn't bad. Not nearly as much variety as the other Varadero hotel I've stayed in, in the past couple of weeks, but, I always found enough to eat. I was disappointed though with the lack of fruit for every meal. We never tried the A La Carte. The snack bar at the pool had grilled sandwiches which we enjoyed for lunch a couple of times, or if we didn't wake up early enough for breakfast. The coffee at the hotel was to die for. Tastes amazing! Love the Cuban coffee!!! :) :) The service all over the hotel was really good. We only got fresh beach/pool towels the 1st & 2nd day. Apparently the towels hadn't arrived from the cleaners... The Animation team tried really hard to engage people in their events. They were all really friendly! The beach bar is closed, so, when you're at the beach, you have to go to the pool bar for all your drinks. It's a bit of a walk... The Lobby bar is 24 hours, which we really enjoyed!! The beach was amazing as usual. Lovely clear water. We went swimming in the pool only once, as we are beach people, but the pool was nice. No complaints. Every evening they had a live band in the lobby, which was nice. Then the evening show would start at 10pm. They did a good job. Overall, i wouldn't hesitate to go back to this hotel. No complaints. There wasn't internet, but we are used to that. It's Cuba. And we're on holidays. I would return to this hotel. If I could make a suggestion though, I'd love to see the food variety increase! :) Thanks for another awesome vacation to Cuba!

“Can't wait to go back! ”
Loved this hotel! We only went for a short 4 days but will definitely return for a week next year. Went with a friend (2 females in mid 20s) and had a blast. Short bus ride from the airport, smooth check-in and our room was ready early. The beach is absolutely stunning and the social staff/animacione were wonderful. Unfortunately the beach bar was not open, as the hotel was not very busy... so I would recommend bringing a thermos/big cup because it can get exhausting going back and forth to the bar and bringing to the beach. BBQ food outside by the pool bar for lunch was excellent. Buffet food was normal for Cuba - we are not picky eaters at all. Always prompt bar service and friendly bar staff. I would have the say the highlight for me was the social staff. They are wonderful people and we can't wait to return to this resort next year.
