Truly awful place. Stayed 2 nights - 2 nights too many!. Tired, run down, dirty room, rusty fittings, bathroom door did not close, shower stone cold.....etc,etc. As for the food: just looking at it makes you feel sick - the restaurant smells awful and looks awful. Only 1 buffet restaurant open - despite 3 restaurants being listed. Drinks served in plastic cups......?????? Very classy!!!!???? Beach looks nice but smelt of sewage. Terrible location - too far away from Trinidad where you would want to spend some time. Hotel Ancon - sort yourself out - you let the whole of Cuba down by being so terrible.

        “Truly Awful ”
On reading the reviews about this hotel, they are so extreme that they could have been written about two entirely different hotels! Unfortunately we did not stay at a ?Great Hotel with an Amazing Beach? but ended up at the ?Casa Soviet Russia?, which I must concur with al500?s comments (7th April review). Firstly there is definitely a ?new side? and an ?old side?. The new bit looks like the pretty picture with the coloured archways and balconies; the old side resembles an ancient multi-storey car park with no balconies. Add on to this that the hotel staff appear to have an attitude to put guests in the worst room and only move them if they complain. Which we did. Our room was filthy (see attached photo where I wiped a tissue along a table): the mattress disgusting: the curtains ripped at the bottom: the AC Unit was a joke ? stuck in a ?hole? in the room and sounded like an aircraft engine: safes didn't work and only on our 3rd complaint did they give us the keys to 3 other rooms to check out, which were only slightly better. We would have moved out altogether, but it was too much hassle for just one night what with being on tour with a set itinerary. Ah ? and the staff. Perhaps they are massively overworked (as it is a huge hotel), underpaid no doubt, but their attitude was no way to generate tips. Rude (especially at the beach/pool bar) & unhelpful. This is not typical for Cuban people and I am pleased to say that we did not encounter the likes again. Restaurant was a joke. No clean tables and when you did find one there was no cutlery so people were just going up and helping themselves in the drawer. Frequently ran out of red wine and orange juice. And I won?t even begin to talk about the food. If you are finishing your holiday with a stay at Varadero ? then don?t bother with Ancon. Instead stay at 2nights at Santa Clara ? we stayed at Los Caneyes, which we enjoyed despite some of the bad reviews. Two nights would allow a leisurely stroll around Santa Clara (good atmosphere and buildings) and time to check out the Museum & Mausoleo del Che Guevara; then back to the very nice pool area at Los Caneyes.

“Im afraid I would not return or recommend (Cuban Butlins for Cubans!)”
Having seen some reasonably buoyant reviews on this Hotel so we figured it would give a good balance of being on the beach while also being able travel to Trinidad during the day. And to be fair it did this... However i am surprised at the reviews as we did not find this hotel at all enjoyable. While its been maintained over its life, it has not been updated and feels pretty drab. You might be thinking that I'm an idiot for saying that as Cuba has not been updated since 1958, its just that the reviews on this site led me to believe that it was going to be better than it was. Also the food was really very bad! Their restaurants were closed and just had their buffet room open, but this really was not a great option. We chose to eat all our meals in Trinidad. Also on the occasions when in reception you could see the look on the faces on some people checking in that they were not seeing what they were expecting. My wife reported to hear a German tourist say "it can't be true..!" This is a basic resort for Cuban tourist, and it must appeal in that way as it was very busy with Cubans and local holiday day trippers. My advice would be to stay in Trinidad (Iberostar look great), spend time in town and on the beach. You could easily use the beach of Ancon as there are no staff so no one to check if you are a guest or not.

        “Rough Week In Cuba ”
My two boys and I travelled to Cuba from June 15-20 2014. The bus ride from Santa Clara was 3 hours long but fully expected. Our flight on Cubana Airline delayed us for 2 hours. We arrived close to midnight. Upon check-in we were assigned a room. There were only two small beds, with three of us in the room. We had to push the beds together, to allow enough room for all three of us. The 5 nights were long, considering I was on the crack of two beds. Our first day started poorly when we discovered the pool was green, and not suitable for swimming. Fortunately the beach was nice. We were told we could use the pool at the neighboring resort, which we did once. On our third day the pool was vacuumed, and blue again. The swim up bar didn't open since there were very few using the pool. The food was very poor, and I'm not a picky eater. 5 days at Hotel Ancon was plenty. I would not recommend visiting this hotel. Our trip home was delayed 7 hours because of Cubana Airlines. I also will not ever fly that airline again. Overall a bad experience.

A run-down Russian-built hotel that doesn't seem to have had much renovation since the glorious days of the Soviet Union. I would call it a dump. Nevertheless I spoke to some Canadian visitors who were quite satisfied. To all his own! The service was brusque, the food was mediocre, the upkeep and cleanliness left much to be desired. The rooms were small and cold (ancient, noisy A/C) with poorly maintained bathrooms. At least there is a nice beach outside, and it's close to the lovely town of Trinidad.

“Beautiful Beach - horrible food ”
I feel like I should make allowances for this being Cuba and be more lenient in the review. But so many things in this hotel disappointed me that I'm reviewing on a non-relative scale. The beach here is very nice. However, the hotel is not equipped to deal with modern guests demands. The beds were broken down. There was a leak in our bathroom that left a puddle on the floor. There wasn't much water pressure, and at times there was no hot water. The air-conditioner was half-broken. There were only two small towels in our room, and some of our tour-mates did not receive towels until after 6 pm on the day that we arrived. The buffet for breakfast had a diverse and large amount of food. However the behavior of the other guests were horrendous. People started lining up before 7 am, and I noticed several people cutting in line. Then as one tries to pick out food from the buffet, others are pushing and reaching around you, and there is no organization of lines or respect for fellow patrons. As noted by another reviewer, the organization of the buffet is horrible. The best (or should I call it worst) example of poor organization was that the coffee was to the left of the serving windows where long lines formed for fresh omelets, and the coffee cups and saucers were on the right side of the serving windows. Therefore you had people arriving at the coffee, finding no cups, crossing through the omelette lines to pick up cups and then passing through the lines again to fill their cups with coffee. The quality of ingredients and food preparation were some of the worst that we experienced in Cuba.

Very run down, all inclusive, hotel. The noise level at the bar/reception area is horrible. The rooms are of good size, but ours wasn't clean; sand all over the floors! We could hear every word spoken in the adjoining rooms! Breakfast buffet poorly organized, one had to run from one end to the other for things, that should have been next to each other. Only good things about this hotel: hot water in the tabs and the fabulous location right on the Caribbean.

“Impressive Exterior - Very Poor Interior”
As we arrived our small group was astounded - a massive resort hotel of the Cubanacan system! This is going to be COOL! We walked to the reception hall and were impressed even more. Then we were told our rooms were going to be in the new section, walking past the large pool, entertainment center and two free bars. WOW! Walking the long hallway to our room we began to see some problems - general upkeep and dirt. When we got to our room we noticed many more problems right away. We did not face the beach, the back yard. The paint was chipped around the room and the individual room A/C had rust all over it. When we checked the bathroom, it got worse. The tile floors were chipped and poorly cleaned, the shower tiles were cracked, and we had only one soap for the bath and one towel per guest (2). The room was not cleaned very well, there was dirt under dresser and TV and the closet threshold was filthy, caked with dirt and leftover items from previous guests. When we went to bed we noticed that the beds were single mattress - very thin with no padding. The pillows were thin but long. As we traveled through Cuba these two problems were evident everywhere we stayed - except at the Melia in Havana. We were told that the dining room opened at 7 AM. The two mornings we were there it was after 7:15 and people stood in line awaiting seating. What surprised us the most were the number of European and Canadian guests. Maybe an inclusive package drew people here - food, drinks, shows, everything free. Maybe they had better rooms but compared to other resorts we have visited outside the USA - this was the worst.

        “Could have been better... ”
This would be I believe my fifth trip to Cuba and I would say the least satisfactory of all. I really wanted to like this hotel but alas it was not to be. The three and a quarter hour trip from the airport was actually fairly charming as we must have been the last to book so my girlfriend and I were sent by taxi instead. We went up over the mountains as opposed to around so the views were spectacular but the roads were in such poor repair that sections were truly abusive. I feel this might be an issue for some so be warned if you are flying into Santa Clara and staying in Trinidad you are in for a drive (in our case longer than the flight). When we arrived at the hotel it was afternoon and since we were not with a group we proceeded to the desk ourselves and I must say the hotel looked severely dated but the public spaces seemed to be well looked after. We approached the front desk, handed over some paperwork and were given keys to room 604. We took the stairs and it really wasn't as far as all that. The lobby was somehow the second floor and half a flight of stairs had you on the third floor. Anyway we proceeded to the room. At first glance the room was small but bright with two twin beds though we had booked one double (not a big deal). There were long thin pillows without pillowcases on the beds (aka dirty stained pillows). In the middle of the large window was a huge window mount air conditioner that had two settings (Cold & loud and off). Unfortunately there were no screens on the large newer windows because I don't mind the heat but fresh air would have been nice, especially at night. We left the window open one day but that led to moths and multiple lizards. The bathroom was something else though. It looked like something from a prison in the 50's. There was a stand up shower, with curtain rod and hooks but no curtain. A toilet seat that did not fit the toilet and the toilet would flush non stop for about five minutes after touching the lever. There was never any warm water and sometimes no water at all and the system used to hold the shower head in place was broken so that the water would fly clear over my head and onto the opposite wall (and I'm 6'1"). By the second day though I had fashioned a new bracket with some bamboo and a rubber band that worked for the rest of the week. Aside from the room though the beach was quite good even if the water was a little bit cloudy. The food and drinks at the hotel were among the best I've experienced in Cuba even if the whole hotel was jammed into one dining room that was probably just barely adequate before the expansion of the hotel in the 90's. I really can't say enough good about the food though. If you couldn't find at least a few dishes you liked on this buffet there was something wrong with you. All in all the staff were pretty good it's just a shame that they aren't given more to work with in terms of product here.

“Nice beach, but otherwise cold, run-down and depressing ”
We had to stay in this hotel because the other options were unavailable. (It's not entirely clear whether they were unavailable because they were full, or because of some Cuban Government glitch.) Hotel Ancon is a remnant of the Soviet Union's overwhelming presence in Cuba from 1962 to 1989. It is a concrete bunker built along a beautiful beach. We had to walk what seemed like miles to get to our room, and there was no elevator to get us to the third floor. Fortunately, we had a room overlooking the beach; otherwise, our view would have been of a ratty, unkempt field that looked like a garbage dump. The "restaurant" (such as it was) had mediocre food, at best, and only a little of it. There was, of course, absolutely NO Wi-Fi. But there was the beach . . . which was spectacular, and truly wonderful. How could you go wrong with this kind of Caribbean beach front property? Well . . . this hotel certainly made a stab at ruining its best asset! Stay hear only if other options are unavailable.

“Excellent Beach & Close to Trindad ”
We stayed 3 nights over the new year period, with the hotel at full capacity (hotela in nearby Trinidad were all fully booked). The 1970's Soviet building lacks charm and is in need of serious maintenance, but is functional and our room was large with a balcony overlooking the beautiful beach. The decor is dated and the bathroom could do with a refurbishment, but the room was comfortable and clean enough ( i think we had a superior room). No hot water during our stay and no explanation from the hotel, but the situation in Havana was the same. The 2 a/c's struggled at times with the window in full sun for much of the afternoon and needed to be left running basically 24 hours a day. Room safe was operated by the door key rather than the standard guest chosen number combination so we chose not to use it. The buffet food was what you would expect from a 3 star hotel but there was plenty of choices including freshly cooked options. There was a wait at times for a table. Entertainment at night was very good. For the most part, the staff were helpful and friendly despite the hotel being very busy. Good kiosk/gift shop for basics. Currency exchange office. Around 10 - 15 minutes to city of Trinidad - nice to be able to visit without being in the hustle & bustle 24/7. Overall a reasonable beach option and would stay again.

“Morning walk way down the beach ”
At 7am, before breakfast, we headed east along the beach out front and as it turned out, were gone 4-1/2 hours, having been fascinated with the myriad of sea creatures in the shallow water: two dead blowfish, oodles of hermit crabs feeding on fish remains, clusters of sea anemones, lots of starfish, a live sea conch. Returning to the hotel, we happened upon a poolside bar where Hector prepared a fresh drink with pineapple and coconut milk, a perfect refresher before we headed off for our first meal of the day, lunch. My Spanish is definitely sub-par, but it was delightful to exchange some basic pleasantries with the friendly crew, Hector and the Cruz Rota fellow and the dive instructor. This was the highlight of our stay since we were only there one night. Wish we could have lingered, but we Americans were on a people-to-people tour the length of the island. The breeze off the ocean right through the room and out the door was delightful given the warm weather.

        “OK but not great ”
Great location for the beach and mosquitoes. We had a fairly nice room but as in most of the 5 places we stayed in Cuba, the mattresses are basic and sometimes lumpy and the pillows are somewhat stiff and hard on your neck. The whole complex has a strangely Soviet feel in design. Elevators were quirky. This is an all inclusive resort with a nice beach and pool and the staff is friendly and courteous. Rarely had beach towels available. The water/beach was very warm and nice but there is a lot of sea grass to wade through. But, as others have said, the breakfast rush is HORRIBLE. No organization and not enough seating. Ran out of coffee both mornings only half way through the breakfast period. Slow and disorganized turnover of tables. Waiting on tableware and napkins (which are given out stingely). Food very basic and consistent with what we found throughout our stay in Cuba. Nothing to write home about. There is evening entertainment but not to my taste. I would stay here again if I was back in the area.

        “Avoid Room 632 ”
Hotel Ancon in Trinidad is on a lovely beach and, being an all-inclusive, offers lots of bars and a good selection of food. The main buffet restaurant is quite noisy but there are three other restaurants (fish, Italian and Cuban) which are more intimate and provide table service. The fish restaurant is particularly pleasant. There is no extra charge for these restaurants but you do have to reserve daily with the reservation desk opening at 8:30 in the morning and space is limited. The room was spacious and clean. The room we had (632) had a lovely ocean view but the shower was a major problem, especially in a hot humid climate. We were there for six nights. The first night the water was, at best, tepid and the pressure was almost non-existent. The next morning we requested a room change. When we returned in the afternoon, we were told the problem had been "fixed". We should have insisted on the room change as the "fix" only lasted one night. We experienced no water, some water, cold water and, infrequently, tepid water. Other members of our group did not have this problem. As other reviewers have noted, the elevators are small and the doors close quickly. Only one of the two elevators was working during most of our stay. There are three hotels on this beach. Perhaps the other two would be an improvement.

the ancon peninsula has one of the best beaches in cuba. white sand great for walks and joging 10-12 km long, clear sea perfect for scuba and swimming. the rooms are modest but clean but who would stay in the room except the sleeping time... the food is ok but who would come to cuba for the food... if you want 'hilton' style vacation, well, then go to hilton. cuba is an adventure, great for nautical sports and visiting the cities and villages. there are many eoropean tourists at ancon, perhaps atracted by the historical city of trinidad, many of them in transit. then come the canadians, happy groups from quebec and ontario and not only. massage; super proffesional. $8 1/2h and $15 one full hour sports; anything you want. just ask for Leo-the boss (great guy) and he will help you. that incudes tennis, yes tennis in cuba,...just playing or takeing free lessons with Carlos, a fiz.ed. teacher and a great tennis player. again, ask for Leo and he will help you rightaway. you can go with the public bus ($2 two ways) in trinidad. it is like traveling back in time, 500 years ago. the whole city is a museum. don't forget you camera. it is safe and fun. back to the resort, there is a store, a medical facility and if you need to buy drugs or go to the hair stylist, well then there is the nearby hotel brissas (1km walk), a 4**** hotel with more facilities but so much character as ancon. comon sense advises: -when in cuba, forget about tim hortons and hich tech facilities. just enjoy cuba. -if you are friendly, the cubans are very friendly / if you are a complainer, the cubans are friendly but sad. lets not forget that the country is in a transitional period with huge economical problems.if you have some extra stuff home that you don't use, bring it to cuba and help them. anything is needed. not to mention that you will be treated like royalty...cubans are proud people. they don't need charity. they need help and they will return your favour. -go one evening in the main hall and have a coffee made by maestro jessus. the best...., or a coktail made by gloria. very sophisticated..., or any service by the proffessional bartenders maria elena and william. -go and learn salsa, spanish all inclusive. -hire a shofeur and drive around in the villages and in the montains. -go to the a la carte restaurants with specific food and live bands. -there is a great artist/carver who is selling his artwork at the hotel. his name is fidel (easy to remember) and his wihe idania. they are great artists. ...and if they ask $10 for a mahagony statue, give them $12. thay deserve it. not to mention how valuable is just the wood..... to resume; my wife and I are very pleased with hotel ancon. jivko&mirella

“Great Beach Location but Rooms not that Great ”
We stayed here for one night on our tour of Cuba. We checked in and then tried to get to our room via the elevator that didn't work. So we hiked up to the 5th floor. The rooms were small and there was hardly anywhere to put our luggage. The beds were small and just had sheets, no mattress covers and a small long pillow. Not very comfy and you wonder how clean they were. The bathroom was very stark looking and had a nice shower but was very basic. The best thing about our room was the view. We had a balcony and enjoyed sitting out there. The air conditioner worked but was noisy. We did enjoy the large pool even though it was a hassel to get pool towels. You had to put $20 down to get one and since we didn't carry any money with us down to the pool we couldn't get a towel. We swam in the pool and had a drink at the swim up bar. We asked for a couple of different drinks and they were out of this and that so we just had a beer. Then we went down to the beach which was very nice. We had a group of friends with us so we enjoyed the "all inclusive" bar drinks even thought they were served in tiny plastic cups that bent in half when you picked them up and you lost part of your drink. The restaurant was very nice for dinner and had lots of variety of food, even a carved turkey! Later on I noticed that I had bites on my legs and arms which I think were from the sand flees that started to jump as the sun was setting on the beach. We left as soon as we could but I got some bites. One or two nights at this hotel are fine but I wouldn't want to spend a week in the tiny rooms.

Not the best nor not the worst I have ever stayed in. Our group wound up at this hotel for one night. Desk personnel handles the check-in with friendliness. A bit of a walk to the rooms and those on the second and third floors had a bit of a stair climb up and down. Rooms were clean, nice views. You can take a taxi into the city centre but it is too far to walk.

        “A pleasant surprise ”
My expectations were not high when I booked a cheap ($417, tax incl) all inclusive to this 3 star resort for 5 nights at the end of November but Ancon turned out to be much better than I imagined. There were the usual glitches- I (and a friend) booked side by side oceanview rooms next to my daughter, 7 month old and 2 year old granddaughter but when we arrived after midnight we were originally placed on different floors, eventually given rooms on the same floor and told we could switch the next day. The room my friend and I had for the first night (rm 526) was oceanview but very tiny with 2 single beds, 1 flat pillow, dirty pillowcases and bedspread and although the bathroom was brand new, there was no hot water. The next day we moved to room 550(non-oceanview) and although we were still in the older section, this room was massive, had 1 king sized bed and a very comfortable single bed as well. The linen was clean, there was plenty of cupboard space, tables, chairs, a functional a/c and safety deposit box (no charge), tv but no telephone. We were provided with a large bottle of water every day. The biggest problem with the room was the bathroom. For anyone who has never been to Cuba before, this bathroom would have been horrifying. It was so old and run down looking, paint peeling, scuff marks everywhere, broken towel racks, shabby looking shower (with a shower head permanently postioned for a 7 ft tall person but at least there was warm- hot water so we were happy. The room itself was very clean ,NO BUGS , but the only thing that could have helped the bathroom would be a total gutting. The beach was beautiful and perfect for my 2 year old granddaughter as the water was crystal clear, calm, shallow, reasonably warm with no rocks so we spent all our time there. Even my 7 month old granddaughter enjoyed playing in the sand. There was plenty of shade in the form of palapas but unfortunately there were those dreadfully uncomfortable hard white plastic lounge chairs. An inflatable mattress helps so I would recommend bringing one along. There was a 20 CUC per person refundable deposit for the beach towels so we did not bother and just let the sun dry us. The large pool was the older, hexagonal shape but the water was so frigid that we never used it. In fact during the 4 full days that we were there we never saw a single person swim or even sit around the pool. The pool however does have the comfortable lounge chairs. The food was the most pleasant surprise as it was actually quite good, especially for a 3 star. In fact I stayed at the next door 4 star Brisas Trinidad del Mar 4 years ago and the food at Ancon was much better than at Brisas. There was always carved meat for dinner in the dining room- turkey, ham, pork, beef- plus grilled shrimp, kabobs and fish some nights. In addition to soups, a pasta station, salad bar (they even had lettuce!), fruit, veggies, selection of buns/breads, there was the standard Cuban desserts and their tasty ice cream. Breakfast consisted of an omelet station, cereals, juices, fresh crepes,(but they only made one at a time so there was a line up), fruit, and the typical slow Cuban toaster. The coffee was weak (for me) but the espresso was excellent and the server would go out to the bar to bring me an espresso. The 24 hour grill served excellent cheese pizzas, fries, hamburgers at lunch time and ham and cheese sandwiches and burgers the rest of the day. That was it for snacks. There are 3 a la cartes at this resort- Italian, International and Cuban and we tried the Italian and it was fine; service was good. You have to book starting at 8:30 am for the same day. There are also plenty of bars at this resort. We had no internet or phone service the entire time that we were here ("this is Cuba") so our wake up call consisted of a staff member knocking on our door at 3 in the morning for our early morning departure. Take an alarm clock as a back up ! The staff at this resort (especially in the dining room) were amazing with my granddaughters. It is not a kid friendly resort (mostly 60+ crowd) but the staff always greeted us with a smile, fussed over the kids and actually held the baby so we could eat, or take our 2 year old to the food stations. Everywhere we went the staff would fuss over the kids and help us in anyway they could. The caring, friendly attitudes of all of the staff really added to the enjoyment of this trip. We were fortunate to have only a 70 minute drive to the resort since we landed in Cienfuegos (as opposed to the 3 hour bus ride I had when I previously landed in Santa Clara). I never went into Trinidad on this trip but having been there in the past I highly recommend it. It is a colonial UNESCO designated city and is so close (12km) that it should not be missed. If you go at night, go to Casa de la Musica and take in an open air concert as it is an experience that you won't forget. You can reach Trinidad by taxi (8CUC) or 2 pesos by bus. The only thing that we found a problem with was the noise level in the dining room due to all the tourists. Every day that we were there there was a different bus load of tourists coming and going and they would be lined up outside the dining room before it even opened. Some days it would be hard to get a seat and it was so noisy that you couldn't really talk. I think most of these tourists just stayed overnight as it was never busy at the beach or anywhere else for that matter. If you come to Ancon with an open mind you will have a good time. Yes, the façade of the building is ugly and does resemble a concrete bunker but the public areas of the hotel are well maintained.( The newer section looks much nicer from the outside but I can't comment on the inside of the rooms.) You can catch a beautiful sunset from the 5th floor (the so called wind tunnel), look at the beautiful surrounding mountains, walk for miles along the beach and within 10 minutes soak up some culture in Trinidad. What more could you ask? This was my 14th trip to Cuba and I would return to this resort if I were able to get another good deal. Note- As poster KrakaLaka mentioned, the elevators are a problem when they slam shut quickly so be extra vigilant when exiting. The resort is also not wheelchair accessible and care needs to be taken around the low railings on the upper levels.

We made a big mistake booking this hotel. It was a 3 star all inclusive and we hadn't realised it was 12kms from the centre of Trinidad. We wanted history, not all inclusive and 3 star at that. The place was clean but so noisy with loud announcements and big groups of people hanging around or checking in. The entertainment was so so and the buffets so so. The staff were friendly .

“Your average 3 star Cuban resort”
I booked a 5 night stay at Ancon for a quick, hot and cheap getaway. Cheap being the operative word- I paid just over $400 including tax. It's not uncommon to spend $400 for one night at a hotel and dinner, so seeing as this was 5 nights all inclusive; my expectations were not very high. Ancon is about a 70 minute drive from the airport in Cienfuegos but keep in mind many flights fly into another airport that is a 3 hour drive. A 10 minute drive to the city of Trinidad. Check-in was what I have come to expect in Cuba. somewhat slow, disorganized and forget about them having any of your booking requests on file. I had asked for 2 rooms side by side and they weren't even on the same floor. They did manage to later get us on the same floor. We had booked 2 oceanfront rooms and were only given one (the non-ocean front room ended up suiting me better anyhow). I also had requested a crib that never arrived. My (non oceanfront) room had a great view of the pool and the mountains. It was quite large with a king size bed and a twin bed (it was a much bigger room than the oceanfront rooms).I slept in the king bed with my children and it was very comfortable. The bathroom is very old and worn, although clean. I didn't think that the toilet flushed at first, but then realized that you had to hold the handle upwards for a very long time. The shower was always lukeworm. Our rooms were in the older section and although I agree that it isn't the most attractive looking building, it really isn't as bad as some people describe it. The hallways leading to the rooms are open air and created a wind tunnel effect. The hallways were not lit at night which made returning in the dark with a baby and a toddler difficult, but I never felt unsafe. The pool was freezing and we didn't see anyone near it our entire swim. It looked ok though, pretty basic, large rectangular shaped pool with a swim up bar that was not in service. The food was actually good for Cuban standards. Infact, for a 3 star resort I was impressed. Not a huge selection, but everything I had was good. Excellent fresh fish, shrimp and grilled meat. Good cappuccinos too. For a 3 star resort there were many dining options- a buffet, beach grill, and 3 a la carted: Italian, seafood and international. The beach was beautiful and where we spent all our time. Calm, clear water. The beach chairs were brutal, so uncomfortable. Bring an air mattress to put on top of them! The internet and phones were down the entire time we were there. This is my second time travelling to Cuba with babies and I cannot express enough how absolutely wonderful and accomodating I have found Cubans in General when it comes to children. On both trips I was whisked to the front of lines at the airport and assisted with my luggage and children. Nearly every employee at the hotel stopped to gush over and play with my kids. The wait staff in the restaurant would hold my infant while I ate. Ancon is not very stroller or wheelchair friendly. A few safety issues- railings on the 5th floor 'lookout' were really, really low. Elevators slam shut with no notice even if you are holding them with your hand. There is a weird grate on the staircases leading to the beach that looked dangerous. Sure enough we witnessed a young boy get his foot caught in it on out last day. Ancon is by no means a 5 star resort by and is a little rough around the edges, but if you are looking for an inexpensive trip and are just looking to hang out on the beach or spend time in Trinidad, it definitely serves it's purpose. It's a quiet resort that attracts a lot of older (50+) couples and singles, so I wouldn't recommend for people looking to party.

“Great beach, pity about the hotel! ”
You can't beat the location. A beautiful safe beach, and only a 12-minute cab ride from Trinidad. We stayed there in July and more than half the hotel was closed for the low-season. The restaurant staff were unfriendly (actually they looked unhappy) until tipped, then they were putting flowers on our table. The food is fairly awful (but breakfast is okay). The nightly show, although repetitive for us, was a big hit with our kids. Nice, large, and clean swimming pool, very good hot snacks available throughout the day, and the bar staff knew how to make mojitos. Not all bad! It was better than "average", but it wasn't "very good." I would imagine that it is a different experience during the high season, but I'd be tempted to book Club Breezes next door, next time.

We really enjoyed Club Ancon. The rooms were very close to the beach (block 3) and we had an oceanview. They were clean and reasonably comfy so it was all good. Loved the beach, great snorkelling, nice sand and very warm water. Food was pretty good, always could find something appealing to me. Really enjoyed our evening in Trinidad, what a great little city. Had lobster dinner (8 cuc...wowzers) at a little rooftop restaurant and the kids were in the streets below playing ball by the light of the moon. Wish I could remember the name of the restaurant...What a great night. The only drawback to this trip was the commute from and to the airport (3.5 hours). Only for this, we would be back there every year :-) Well worth the money

“Reasonable option for the price ”
In early June I spent a day and night at the Hotel Ancon and had an enjoyable time. This was a slow period and there were very few tourists, which I did not mind myself. More Cuban families and a few other people though very low in numbers. The check in went smooth with a small glitch in the room being ready which was fixed quickly. I was happy with the room, size and cleanliness. The food at the buffet was good, especially the Calamari. Decent selection and well prepared. Any dish I tried I liked and there was a good amount of fresh vegetables. At the bars I received good service and friendly treatment. I enjoyed talking with the bartenders and consumed a good amount of wine. The Ancon Beach was nice also. Well maintained and the water clean. The weather is hit or miss this time of year so we made sure to swim before the afternoon rains. As far as the decor and upkeep: This is an older hotel and not in pristine condition. If you enjoy a more visually appealing property it may be best to look into the Brisas which is very close. Overall, I enjoyed my staff at the Hotel Ancon and for $38 pesos a person for a double room, it was a good bargain for the price.

I just returned from a short stay at the hotel. I stayed on the new side with a balcony facing the beach and beautiful sunsets. However, others in the group stayed in the old Russian built section and it was very rundown. The buffet has lots of choices and there were cooks at breakfast, lunch and dinner cooking specialties. I loved the liver on skewers, had not eaten liver in at least 10 or more years. You are right next to the Dive shop and the water sports, take a free catamaran ride or pay a little and go snorkeling out to the reef. Everyone is super friendly there. Don't miss drinks by the pool, with Hector the bartender, he makes great drinks.

        “Great Value! ”
Hotel Ancon (otherwise known as Club Amigo Ancon), is one of three all inclusive resorts located at the Playa Ancon, nearest Trinidad. We have just returned after a wonderful 12 day vacation, and were very pleased with everything at this resort. We upgraded to a suite located in the older of the two buildings. A two room suite with a very large balcony, while a little dated, was always kept spotless by great staff. Fresh towels and bottled water everyday. No wash clothes though, so be sure to throw a few in your luggage. Food at both the buffet and at the a la cartes are very good. All provide many options for everyone. While at the buffet, be careful not to leave your bags unattended. We sadly learned of a young lady who's beach bag was taken after they had accidentally left it on the back of a chair. She discovered after leaving for only a minute, that she had forgotten it on the back of her chair, when she returned, it was gone. A tip for lunch at the snack bar, be sure to grab a few of your favourite pizza toppings (bacon, peppers, onions, tomatoes etc) and take them with you for the ultimate pizzas at lunch! Don't forget your travel mugs! Those very small glasses they serve drinks in are very very small, not to mention not so great for the environment. The pool really is awesome, complete with pool bar, although not many use it. A cheap floatie from Giant Tiger or Canadian Tire makes for a great pool toy, and a softens the somewhat hard plastic loungers. What this resort really is all about, is the beach! Playa Ancon has one of the most incredible beaches, white sand for kilometers! No jelly fish, just the warm calm waters of the Caribbean Sea! Bringing your own beach towels avoids the hassle of a $20 deposit for the hotel. The beach is public, so you're best not to leave valuables laying around. A trip here is not complete without a day or evening trip to Trinidad. Located only 12 kms away, this short 10 min cab ride is definitely worth it. Be sure to confirm the price before you get in the cab, $8 by day, $10 by night. If you ask security to call Phillipe, he is a local taxi driver who speaks perfect english, and really knows places to eat, drink, stay, or just visit. We also stayed one night at a Casa in Trinidad, Casa Azul Santa Ana. A wonderful Casa who's host Nesi, prepares wonderful meals. We highly recommend this Casa! What makes Cuba incredible are the people. From the gardener, to security, wait staff, and admin staff, they are all really wonderful people, always looking to help you out. Be sure to bring old clothes, toothpaste, shoes, children's toys, tylenol, old perfumes/colognes, anything you've cleaned out of the closet. They make great tips/gifts and are greatly appreciated. All in all, this is a great resort, full of great people. If you are a REALLY picky eater, have been told you are high maintenance, of generally like to complain about everything, this resort, and likely most in Cuba, are not for you!!!! Email any questions you may have, we have stayed here many times.

“some people should just stay home ”
I recently spent 1 week at the Amigo Ancon (Sept.13 to 20) This was my 6th visit to this hotel and my 8th visit to Cuba. Previous trips to Santiago de Cuba and Playa Giron are not comparible. This trip I found pretty much everything as I remembered it. I visit for 2 weeks in March and 1 week in the 'off season', Aug/Sept. I was warmly welcomed by staff who remember me by name and treat me like visiting family. Yes, the hotel is practically shut-down due to low numbers of guests. The buffet only for your main meals still offers a good selection of food, (believe it or not, somethings are still seasonable in Cuba too) the snack bar for pizzas, sandwiches, fries (the best) and occasionally a hamburger. Thanks Rolli. We (the Canadians) were treated to 1 a la carte dinner which was absolutely fine. The lobby bar and the beach/snack bar were open with the same courteous service (thanks fellows) and the special coffee bar in the lobby even opened for one night. Yes, the swim-up bar only opened on our last day, thanks Conrado but the pool was open and clean. thanks Carlos. The best kept secret at the Ancon has to be the wine bar (la Cava). I do not understand why the travel reps at the hotel or the hotel itself doesn't promote this hidden gem. No, it is not 'All Inclusive' but the superb selection of both red and white wines are very moderately priced, and if you don't know what you like, Ivan will be more than happy to recommend something for you. He is also a wealth of knowledge on the hotel, the area and Cuba in general. I looked forward to my quiet time, great glass of wine and conversations with Ivan every evening, away from the noise of the rest of the hotel. Thanks Ivan. 'es cuba' Yes, the animation staff is down to the bare minimum (it's the slow season) but there is entertainment every night! Yes, it does become boring, so don't go every night! Regala and the animation crew are the best. I challenge anyone to speak English, French and Spanish as fluently and at 'machine gun' speed as Regala! Thanks sweety! I always stay on the 'superior side' and my room is kept spotless with clean towels, bottled water and towel art every day. Thanks Elsa! All in all, I have decided that some people should just not travel! No, it's not like home! It's Cuba! It's warm (downright hot, sometimes), the beach is long and lovely, the city of Trinidad is magnificent, the Hotel Ancon building is 3 star but the staff and people of Trinidad that I have come to call Amigos are 5 star plus. I can't wait to return.

My wife and I stayed at the Ancon last September my wife is visually impaired so we were in a handicap room on the first floor it was out of season and half the hotel was closed very quiet time the pool was down for repairs. but we had all of the carrib ocean lets face it that's why you go to Cuba. the room was yards from the water and steps from the 24/7 bar. the food was good remember your in Cuba it is what it is the staff was great friendly always smiling the main hotel lobby and this great coffee bar Jose the barista was great it got to the point Jose i walked up to the coffee bar and he had my coffee there don't know what he put in it but it was good. i do advise if you do go to this hotel take walking shoes. we went into Trinidad on a tour i don't know if i would go that route again i think i would opt for a taxi then just walk around Trinidad is a very special place like in most Cuban cities there's music all around. its also the oldest city in the modern world in 20/14 or 15 they will be celebrating there 500th year on earth so if ya want a party please go. now back to the hotel a ten minute drive off the property there's is a little café that served the best lobster dinner for two dinners it was twelve Pecos. it was pretty and romantic i believe most of Cuba is romantic. personal note the first time we went to Cuba i was un sure if i was gonna like it but we've been back so many times. so if your gonna go to Cuba on your very first time don't listen to a lot of negativity about the island go with a open mind and a great big Canadian smile they will love ya as my wife is visually impaired she is treated with honor and respect and they treat her seeing eye dog with friendliness so enjoy

There is a vollyball net on the beach,,just no games! There are big suits in the main yellow building, but you can only arrange them at the front desk. There are sand fleas so bring your de-itch stuff...a minor inconvienance!I hope to return to the Ancon!

The staff and people are very friendly and helpful and the beach is beautiful and the place is very safe and secure. These three factors are the main reasons along with very competitive pricing, that I always choose this hotel. The food is average and on par with most of the high end resorts in Cuba. A trip to Trinidad cost 10 CUC by taxi and there are many taxis outside the hotel. We used a taxi driver named Yordhi (tel. +5353806155) throughout our stay there. We highly recommend him. Also special mention should be made of Addys (Customer Relations Manager) who was very friendly and attended to all our issues promptly. We highly recommend this Hotel and we will be back again in September.

Just spent a week at the Ancon Hotel. I stayed on the new side, room and balcony facing the beach, a great view. There is the buffet restaurant and then the smaller restaurant that you order off the menu, I had most of my dinners there. Shows at night give you some fun, and of course the rum and other drinks flow freely. Be sure to talk to Hector at the patio/beach bar, he makes a great drink. Take the catamaran ride to Cayo Blanco for the day from the Marina behind hotel. Also be sure to snorkel on the reef and go for a Hobie Cat ride. If you dive the dive masters, Leo and Igor are super fun to dive with.

Hotel is clean. Beautiful beach. Very polite staff. Very close to Trinidad. Food was nice..not the best at least there was no stomach surprises. Fantastic drinks, gorgeous weather. I do recommend to pop in to one of the local ,,restaurants,,!! We've found one and we enjoyed a lobster every day ;)). We spent 5 days in this hotel and we will never forget that place!! Thank You !!

        “Great Hotel, Amazing Beach ”
I really cant say anything negative about this resort. I have been twice and I will hopefully be returning late spring. The buffet always had plenty of choices, fresh fruits and vegetables. A variety of meats and a fabulous pasta bar. Service was always bang on and lots of smiling faces from the porters to the Reservations desk staff. The a la carte restaurants were superb. Good wine with every meal. The snack bar at the beach made one of the best ham and cheese sandwiches with french fries...be sure to order it all dressed. Plenty of good cold Cristal beer on tap. Bloody Mary's and Mojitos to die for. Jesus at the Cafe Bar makes a mean Spanish coffee served in fancy drink glasses....just cant beat Cuban coffee! One of the best unspoiled beaches I have ever seen....it goes on forever if you like walking or running. Not too many waves so perfect for just wading. The hotel offers catamaran trips and snorkling...we did this many times...the catamaran captains are qualified sailors. I highly recommend a trip out just to see the beautiful view inland...stunning!! There is also deep sea diving available right at Ancon Hotel. The rooms in the Superior building are perfect. Cleaned meticulously daily. The views on the ocean side are breathtaking, on the bay side you can see beautiful Casilda and Trinidad sparkling at night, There were a few beautiful horses roaming the grounds during one of my stays. This is a very safe hotel with a strong security presence, although not overwhelming. Never once did I feel unsafe day or night at this resort. The entertainment was truly above and beyond for a three star hotel. You could also see the troups practicing during the day. True talent! I can not wait to get back to the beach and the Beautiful City of Trinidad. Awesome value for your money....I dare you to be disappointed!!

        Very Good Hotel
The Staff is the most welcoming I've ever met... They invite you, they smile all the time... The Bars (numerous) not all are well-equiped, but very accessible! We had a luxury room with a balcony to the beach, just magic! The other room was cheaper and pretty small with old furniture... A Show every night and contests with customers (where I almost become Miss Ancon) Just Great! The food is local and very well done, fresh and natural products, fruit tastes like fruit! I enjoyed it! (Two steps from the beach, litteraly)

        Great beach, fantastic people
Considering the Ancon is a 2.5 star rated property, the value received relative to the cost, exceeded my expectations. The rooms in the new part are excellent, and so is room service. However, in the old part (hotel rooms)it is below standard. The service is good, and the food satisfactory. The disco is a failure, but the town of Trinidad is near and the discos are great! At the Ancon, the scuba diving staff is professional, and the entertainment team is fantastic! The bar and restaurant personnel are responsive and friendly. The hotel is on the beach, and the sunsets are memorable!

        A hotel of two parts
The older part of the hotel, in which we spent the earlier part of our week, is really in urgent need of refurbishment as a lot of the fittings are broken or missing and the aircon units are far too close to the bed. View from the balcony was however stunning, although let down by the fact that there was only one chair on which to sit and view it. The more modern part of the hotel - especially the rooms facing the sea - is completely different and, conversely, excellent value for the money. The main restaurant is deceptive and it takes a liitle time to see beneath the UK holiday camp ambience to what is actually very well prepared and healthy, if plain (by European taste) food. The more formal Cuban restaurant is good (and Cuban wine was a discovery) but the Italian seems rather pointless. The only real irritant was the lack of availability of bottles of mineral water - the litre and a half a day may be a European fad but for an all inclusive hotel it seems rather pointless to have to constantly visit the bar for water one glass at a time. All in all it was a refreshingly informal hotel, with a superb beach and friendly and helpful staff but let down by sub standard accommodation in the older part of the building which rather coloured our experience.

        A great cuban vacation
We loved our 2 week relaxing stay at the Gran Caribe Ancon in a superior room with balcony overlooking the beach in Jan 2006. The service was excellent as well as the location, beach, pool, cleanliness of the room, the appetizing meals and drinks with lots of choices and the beach and entertainment activities. It was an economical hotel with superior and friendly service comparable to any 5 star property in Cuba except the price. It is not suitable however for the young disco crowd. We hope to go back there next year.

        Hotel Ancon
I spent a week at Hotel Ancon in February 2009. This was my first trip to Cuba and my first experience with an all inclusive hotel. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The staff was so friendly and helpful. I really enjoyed the 24 hour bar and snack bar that was outdoors. I spent some late nights there with my new friends from Canada. If we wanted burgers and mojitos at 3 a.m. they were only too happy to provide them for us. The beach is beautiful, the food is good and they have ping pong!!! I had a blast and would highly recommend it for a vacation on the beach. Trips to Trinidad are very fun and convenient. Check out Club Ayalla, the disco in a cave.

        Ancon hotel
I went to Ancon hotel Chrismas. It was a lot better then I expected. What really impressed me was the fact that as soon as our bus from the airport arrived everyone was there in the lobby to greet us. Everything there is so beautiful, the water, the beach, the sun, the people. They had fantastic food. The best I ever had at a hotel before and the nightly entertaiment. Let me just say WOW! They are extreamly talanted. If I could I would never have left. If I could I would honestly live in that hotel. You make friends so easily with the people. Weither their just visiting too or if they work there. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. I cant wait to go back and see all my Cuban friends again. I miss them so much!... I miss everything there so much.

        Great deal for the price!!
We were at the Hotel Ancon from may 14th to the 22th 2005. It was way better than we anticipated!!! The long public beach is ideal for walkers, we did snorkling directly at the beach and saw baracudas, crabs, star fishes... Even though the rooms are very small and not well isolated (bring earplugs), they were very clean, new clean towels and bottle water were included daily. The rooms are equiped with 110 Volts current which was nice, hot water and enough water pressure was always available in the showers. There are no refrigerators in the room and rooms with a balcony are much smaller... The food was average at the buffet so we ate every night either at the iatlian restaurant or at the international restaurant. The snack bar near the pool is very complete (pizza, pasta, fish, chicken, hotdogs...) and a good alternative to the buffet. The clientel is mostly european. There is a bank directly in the hotel. Trinidad is about a 15 min. drive from the hotel and will cost you about 8 pesos to go by taxi. The old Trinidad is beautifull to visit by foot and browsing through the market is a must. We were pleasantly surprised by this place and would go back anytime...

        Caribbean dream
I just got back on Thursday April 7th from 2 weeks at Hotel Ancon on Playa Ancon in Sancti Spiritus about 1 hours drive from Cienfuegos Airport in Trinidad and it was absolutely wonderful. This hotel is rated 2 1/2 stars but I believe it deserves a star up on this rating .The Brisas is right next door (you can walk over to it from the beach -about 100 yards away) and is rated a star higher but the food is the same (I asked some guests at the Brisas) The architecture is a bit more modern and it is a newer hotel but you also pay a few hundred dollars more. The older section of the hotel (the main building at Ancon) the rooms are a bit small but the bathrooms, air conditioner, beds are all pretty good and they work and who spends time in their room during the day anyway. The newer rooms in the new section are a bit bigger. The weather was 32 Celsius and sunny for all the 2 weeks. The Caribbean Sea is a gorgeous blue green color and warm The Cuban people like I said in my other review are beautiful and genuinely are outgoing and friendly if you only speak them as some of them are shy with tourists but with a little smile you can strike up a warm conversation any time. The city of Trinidad (14 kilometers away and a short 5-7 peso ride) is a charming town with plenty to see and do.The outside bazaars are everywhere and you can get all kinds of handmade goods, from carvings to cotton tablecloths to clothes and of course cigars, hand rolled on the spot or in the box whatever you prefer. I was invited to share a meal at a Cuban's house and if you accept (I strongly advise you to do this as many tourists do take advantage of some of this Cuban hospitality) and you will have a beautiful and long lasting friendship with the family that invites you to their house).I miss Cuba and it's people already and I will go back when my next vacation is due. Wishing you all a happy and memorable holiday I will say adios until next time.
