Juan Gualberto Gomez Airport was built in 1989 and inaugurated by Fidel Castro,[3] thus replacing the old Varadero airport located in Santa Marta, currently known as Kawama Airport. The airport was named after a journalist, fighter for the Cuban Independence and black rights activist in Cuba Juan Gualberto Gómez (1854–1933). The terminal building has shops for tourists (including rum, cigars, T-shirts, books, carvings, pharmaceuticals), a large departures lounge cafeterias and a VIP lounge. A VIP card is available by paying $30/person to the local tour company representative. This allows the departing passenger to bypass the queues for check-in, have an agent take your departure tax to the correct official for you, and bypass any lines for passport control. The passenger is then taken to the VIP lounge which provides free food and drink (including alcoholic beverages).[4] The ground handling equipment is imported mainly from North America. There are four jet bridges, but air stairs are used for the remaining aircraft parking spaces on the apron by the terminal. Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport (IATA: VRA, ICAO: MUVR), formerly known as Varadero Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto de Varadero), is an international airport serving Varadero, Cuba and the province of Matanzas. The airport is located closer to the city of Matanzas than to Varadero. The closest airport to Varadero is Kawama Airport. In 2009, the airport handled 1.28 million passengers,[2] making it the second busiest airport in Cuba after José Martí International Airport in Havana.

“The worst mistake at the best Location ”
I went to Varadero on Jun 4th with my husband and children. It is an all inclusive hotel but is terrible to be there. First of all I had to change the room because it smelt like pee, and had cockroaches. I had a two bedrooms apartment at the second floor, any washroom had water in the toilet (that is hideous). Moreover, when we took showers, the rooms become in a river because all the water ran from the shower's floor to everywhere.. at midnight we went to the bar 24 hours open and the only snack that they had is sandwich (a cold bred with a super skinny slice of jam and cheese), I asked to the reception a washrooms fixing or change of room (again) , but they didn't, we had the whole week filling the toilet from the shower water. They have only a buffet restaurant with food in low quality, every day is same food or modified meals. Many time I had to ask for fresh fruit, meat, clean plates, or drinks. The cocktails were terrible, "mojito" is one of the most popular drinks in Cuba, but they dont have it, the snack bar close to the pool only have sandwiches or hamburgers for few hours only, some days the just said "sorry, the burgers are finished, only sandwiches" and you have to wait so long or in some cases. They do not have internet like sunwing said, but you can find for 3 pesos half hour at 10 minutes walking. People are waiting for tips all time or you will get a service with angry faces. Finally, the GYM is small and in bad conditions, they dont have spa, only a massage room unreliable never open. I readed this kind of reviews before my trip, I thought "ok, people can be bad experiences, but not can be like that, is an exageration" but is not! Pool is nice, the location is amazing, Varadero is quite and safe but some time hotels are not the best opcion in Cuba, my good times were out of the hotel or in the beach; is so clean and gorgeous. If you want ask something... you are alowed. Because of my Spanish language was more easy, I cant imagine what would happen if I wouldnt. My last words... Cubans see people "specially canadians" like goldmines, they want tips all the time for nothing, increment prices if you speak not Spanish, and confuse people to get more money from them with lies and deceits. Also, Habana is more expensive and the same thing with people. Do you want cheap vacations? go to Mexico; is cheap and not stressful!

“You book there to confirm that post cards beaches do exist”
That is exactly what my daughter in law said as soon as we arrived and got close to the beach area of the hotel. A beautiful scenery with all the blue tones you could and couldn't imagine. The Hotel itself is located in an area of Varadero where the beach could not be more pleasant. It is also close to other places in town and to a couple of handicraft markets, in case you wanted to go for a walk and buy some presents to take home. We booked in September, that is one of the reasons for the emptiness of the beach, which makes it even more desirable to relax and to have the most quality time ever. The first contact with people at the reception could not have been better. Very professional and helpful. We arrived earlier and did not have any problems to get our rooms as soon as we completed the formalities of the registration. Our rooms were in the building facing to the beach. Perhaps no the most up to date from the hotel (I believe the rest of the rooms had been modernized), but with everything you need if your idea is that the rooms are to sleep and to shower (very nice hot water). Mosquitoes were not the most annoying issue, so with the proper repellent it was possible to seat in the balcony and enjoy a very nice view and the sunset. We had a small problem in the bathroom and it was resolved in 15 min after I went to reception. It might help to be polite and to acknowledge their service. They had problems with the air conditioning in the restaurant (I was told they have plans to refurbish that area for the next season) and during the weekend, when the hotel had more clients it was more difficult to get the main course but if you are flexible and go for other things from the buffet, that could work. We found the service and drinks at the bar OK, some of the people working there are very professional, others no so much but again being polite and tipping from time to time might make your life easier, the same applies for the restaurant. Not point spending time in the swimming pool, which during the weekend gets a little bit crowded with locals. We enjoyed the hotel nighttime entertainment; the show on Friday was good, very professional dancers. We found that the hotel is about the beach and some of the people working there trying to make things easier for you. All in all, you can have a very enjoyable time if you are not very demanding, if your expectations are about a beautiful empty beach (no July or August).

      “May 12th-25th 2014 My 3rd Visit ”
Ive been to 2 other Resorts in Varadero, and this is my Favorite..If your looking for rest and relaxation, Club Tropical is the place. If your looking to be pampered and expect the best of the best, then I suggest you look elsewhere.. I have No Complaints what so ever..My hubby and I stayed in a Superior room, Air Conditioning was great.. the Staff was friendly, rooms were cleaned daily, fresh towels, lots of hot water and water pressure I might add. Everywhere you looked someone was cleaning. Pool area was cleaned daily, (dirty only when the Ignorant people wouldnt clean up after themselves) and there were lotts of them.! Other then that, Pool was Amazing. :) Dining Area: FOOD thumbs Up, for 13 days there wasnt a thing I didnt like. Pancakes, french toast, yogurt, eggs etc etc. Lunch: fresh breads, fruits, veggies, beef or chicken on the grill, or hamburgers. And supper it was always something different on the menu each night. Flavour was not an Issue...they do their best with what they have. And it was Awesome!! 3 meals a day You do not go Hungry. Bar service was good, Pinacoladas were great. Beach was Beautiful, lots of lounge chairs, Entertainment was music through the day and a show at night. The Water dancing was Amazing...its a must see!! Over-all Club Tropical was so good to Us that we;re going back again in April....you make your Vacation, so make the best of it:)

      “Small,friendly,centrally located ”
Welcoming foyer leads to pleasant pool and lounge area in this small, compact complex. Excellent pool for our 2 young grandchildren. Even though we had booked a 2-bedroom apartment facing the beautiful beach, we opted to change to the much nicer upgraded rooms with modern bathrooms, lots of hot water and comfortable mattresses. The one restaurant provided good choice and quantity of buffet food, especially fresh breads and meats/fish. Best to get your coffee and cappuchino from the bar, though. If you got hungry between set meal hours, there were hamburgers grilled to order, sandwiches and wide range of drinks available from the recreation area or the bar. Thermos jugs are provided in rooms; fill up with whatever at the bar to take to the beach or in to town. Beach area within a minute's walking distance, where on calm days, hotel guests can get a free 20-minute catamaran ride (tips appreciated); snorkelling possible off the catamaran for small fee. Centrally located in clean, charming Varadero, you can walk within 10 minutes to excellent craft market, bakery, shopping, restaurants or you can enjoy a 20-30 minute horse and buggy ride for about 10 pesos. Staff were friendly, helpful and especially interactive with our children...which was a good thing because there is NO Kids Club as advertised on Sunwing or hotel website. The very limited range of pool and recreation equipment was promptly and happily supplied by cheery Esmerelda, who did everything she could to make up for the disappointment of no organized activities. Pool table and ping pong table were godsends. No WiFi available, contrary to advertising. Daytime music was pleasant, but at night was cranked up to ear-splitting volume until 11 pm, either to accompany the several shows or just because someone thought it was a good idea. Re: money exchange, when they had pesos available, we found the desk gave an exchange rate equivalent to the bank, so no need to hike down the street during bank hours.

      “GREAT TIME! ”
We went at the end of February and it was at mayb 1/3 capacity. therefor it was great! very quiet and lots of space to do your own thing with out crowds or disturbances. great service, buffet, bar, beach service no mojitos here bring a giant thermos to load up on drinks to bring to beach and walks in Varadero or bring a cooler. mostly russian and canadian tourists at resort, only saw 4 kids during our entire stay. outdoor pool table is fun but they need new balls, cue sticks and chalk music not very good. go to The Beatles Bar for live music. tip when u can, they don't pressure for tips but you will get way faster and better service when u do. We would definitely return there. Especially for the price.$700 per person for 1 week from Toronto

“Pleasantly Surprised. Great Friendly staff ”
I stayed there 2 nights in May with my boyfriend and we enjoyed our stay. I am not big fan of resorts. I always promote Casas Particulares in Cuba but I wanted to try once to be able to give better opinion to my clients. I heard many complains on the food in hotels and in Cuba in general. So I didnt have high expectations. Here the food was good quality and great choice. Staff was very friendly and as its smaller hotel they will remember you next day. Its located just on the beautiful beach in Varadero and also in the town. So you dont feel cut out of the 'normal' world :). Room was clean, comfortable beds and Super shower. The best in Cuba! Can only recommend!

For two weeks in February I had the pleasure of staying at this resort. Food, staff and rooms were all amazing. Very friendly staff. The best location in Veredaro! If you are looking for the lap of luxury this is not the place to go but if you are looking for an authentic and comfy experience then this is the place to go!
