The airport has a drawing of Che Guevara on one of its outside walls. Pope John Paul II flew to this airport during his last visit to Cuba, flying round-trip between here and José Martí International Airport in Havana. Likewise, Pope Benedict XVI, during the second papal visit to Cuba, flew here for Mass and other activities, from his visit to León and Guanajuato in Mexico, before moving on to Havana. The airport is basically a turbo-prop centre. Nevertheless, Jet aircraft also fly to this airport. Most commercial flights into SCU are domestic, but there are about twenty international flights each week; while these international flights are done mostly by domestic airlines, the international routes have nevertheless awakened the interest of some foreign airlines that might open flights into this airport in the future. “Say NO to Brisas los Galeones ”
TORONTO - (a rewrite - lost original and this is a synopsis) No way, I won't go. Its time for my annual trip outta here and I after much thought, Galeones will never be again. I don't believe one should have to 'work' at having a vacation -- I'm already city/work fried...I don't want to compromise on selfish indulgence. I will not again. Food - abysmal The bar: Day 2, ran out of lime/lemon, out of beer 1/2 the time, no mint -- oops., BBQ on the private beach? - never mind. Didn't happen until the final day when everyone was too sick to enjoy it. Some pandemic had attacked our hotel and its sister hotel down the road -- 2.5 days out, I was. Private Beach? so neglected that one afternoon down there, pretending you're Robinson Crusoe is quite enough.... tiki bar, long deserted, BBQ -- same; beach itself, very dangerous with natural detrius -- not good for bare feet. Rooms were swell. Staff changed me after the first nite because they felt my room was not up to snuff. And they were quite right. Didn't have to say anything though -- good work with that. Clean too. Enjoyed the daily staff -- the few without guile. Staff -- how gullible are you all? I read the reviews before I went down. I knew one was to stuff their suitcases with gifts for the needy staff and families..... or, the black market -- and even that's okay. who cares. Me, I do, I care when I feel I'm essentially paying twice for a mediocre vacation. This giving of toiletries, clothing, etc.,.... is not good will, it is posturing and guilt absolving -- exploitation is exploitation. You're doing it. Live with it. Cuba is the most corrupt vacation destination I've ever been to. I fear that I must skip the horse ride story (highly recommended!) and advise all travellers to do whatever they feel necessary to protect their money. My Canadian dollars were stolen from my safe. Cuban money left behind. My Canadian dollars, in a separate purse, inside my vault were missing when I packed up to leave on the last day. Perhaps taken while packing, grabbing a coffee (great coffee!!!) 5 mins. out of the vault, in my knapsack. All rooms have ground/hillside accessible balconies. I'm not going back.

        “A Terrible Disappointment ”
My Husband and I looked forward to a quiet relaxing vacation at Los Galeones. Having visited there 12 years ago just for a look-see, we thought it was ideal for stunning scenery and peace. The drive to the Hotel is very slow because the road has become very damaged due to devastating hurricanes, but it is not an unpleasant drive because you can enjoy the wonderful unblemished coastline all the way there. We were greeted warmly by staff and tourists at the lobby and taken to our room quickly. This Hotel is a very small property and apparently this is the draw for the mostly senior regulars. We found there was no where to go except down to the beach to get shade because the "regulars" set up camp early in the a.m. in all the spots with shade. The beach is lovely to look at but the water was very murky and the bottom is uneven, rocky and covered in sea grass. We got down to the beach at 3:45 and asked for a drink of water but the bar tender said that was not possible, the bar was supposed to be open till 4:00. It is a long 300 steps back up from the beach but we knew this before we booked the trip, it was not a problem. We were unable to get a drink in the bar at the pool because there were no staff a lot of the time. The food was the very worst we have ever encountered in Cuba and this was our 5th time to Cuba. We are well aware of water difficulties in the Caribbean and we dont worry about hot water being available at all times, however there was no water for a good portion of our stay and guests in the know, were scooping water out of the pool to flush the toilets!!!The" straw that broke the camels back" however was the over whelming disgusting chokingly foul odour from the septic system, that wafted into our room and made me sick to my stomach.I asked for some help with this situation but it was 10:30 p.m. and the only person around was a staff member tending the bar and she could not do anything to help. I read all the reviews on this property on Trip Advisor and I am very discouraged that no-one has written about these very real problems. I am an avid traveler, I love Cuba, but this Hotel should be in my opinion, the last place one would pick for a holiday. We were very lucky to have been able to de-camp this Hotel and head down to Sierra Mar where we spent a most enjoyable rest of our vacation.

        “Not too nice. ”
I liked the resort. The staff is very friendly, the food is good, the beach is nice. I noticed only one terrible thing- around the restourant the cats, they are very friendly and cute. One worker catches them and kills them. It is terriable. I was so many times in Cuba, but have never seen this before. It is very sad!

Is a beautiful place but it needs more attention. Very poor offer at the buffet. Swimming pool neglected. Very poor selection of dink at the bar. I would not return to this place, nor recommend it to anyone.

        “Our experience in 'paradise'. ”
In a few words, here are the facts of pros and cons of our trip to this hotel. Cons: beach small and full of biting fleas, seaweeds and stones in the water, lots of stairs everywhere, leaking roofs, no water in the room, crumbling and damaged walls, nowhere to go nearby for entertainment, only old people go there touching food with their hands in the buffet, more prostitution than we've seen in other hotels in Cuba. The pros: sun, view, weather. I can get that anywhere in Cuba minus some of the cons hopefully. And yes, better watch your personal items at all times as we personally experienced this unfortunate aspect of this hotel. Bon voyage and enjoy!

        “Rather stay home”
This hotel has nothing good with the best feature being the view of mountains. The room is small, old uncomfortable beds worse than a Walmart mattress. There is no fridge in the room. The TV is small and doesn't have one clear channel. The hallways smell of mold and leak from the ceiling when it rains. Expect to pay for the safe and no water is ever given. The buffet is one of the smallest I have ever seen and food is often recycled from the previous day but the salad was ok. We took the scooter tour, the farm we visited is not really a farm but just a house with a few fruit trees and some pigs. The goal is to sell you coffee that they buy from a real farmer. My house has a bigger backyard than this 'farm'. The so called bat-cave (named by the hotel?) did have a few bats but we couldn't stay more than 5 min. because of ants biting our feet. The last stop, the red sand beech is not really red, more brownish, nothing extraordinarily. The hotel beach is terrible, washed away with plenty of I don't--see-them biting us. I can see beautiful sunsets right here at home, this run down hotel not worth staying at for any price.

“Neglected, sad hotel with potential ”
We'he been there for 2 weeks. After treacherous 3 hours ride(80km) we arrived to the hotel late at night. We were assigned room not prepared for guests. Springs in the mattress sticking out in some places and sinking in the others. Bed sheet too short to cover whole old tired mattress. In the morning I asked for different sheet and was told they have none. They couldn't do anything about mattress either. Not for the first timers like us. From my observations I learned that if you pay and shower gifts on staff and you are a repeated guest you will get better equipped room. As a repeated guest - like Ella- you will be treated better. You get the room that you want with everything in it. As to the staff... Grace is wonderful, always smiling, always accommodating, waitress Sandra looks for tips. If she will not get it at breakfast, she will ignore you at lunch time and will not serve you at all. Happened to me. They have a great cook who does wonders and nice guys working at the beach bar. Hotel has unique setting. Beautifully positioned at the top of the mountain. With the views to die for. Build probably during "russian era" for russian staff working in Cuba and unfortunately not being updated since. We have met wonderful people there. Atmosphere there is very "homey". Guests know each other for years. If it wasn't for the sad state of the resort...........

“Not great at all...OK at most. ”
I stayed at this Hotel between January 22 - 29 2009. I made good friends with staff at the hotel. We had a lots of fun. But despite that, and as much as it makes me uncomfortable to say so, Brisas Los Galeones is really not a good pick for your vacations. I travelled a bit in Cuba, my family...even more and for the price...there is a LOTS of better options. FOOD: Good at best, ok most of the time and sometimes just plain bad. No buffet here (exept morning). You will be presented a 'menu' for dinner and supper. Which consist of Soups, salads, and 4-5 main dishes. Take note: 2 or 3 of those 5 are almost always not available and the menu is often the very same several days in a row. Of course, you can take the shuttle for Sierra Mar and enjoy the buffet there. Even tho its not that great and definetely not worth the 1 hour trip (30 minutes each way) it does provide something different. Keep in mind tho theres only 2 bus per day which means you will end up spending most of the day at Sierra Mar or end up taking a Cab at 8$ (Cuban convertible pesos) each way. HOTEL: Small, nice and quiet. Everything is at hands reach. OH! Exept of the beach which is down the hill which means you will have to go down, and up !!!, the 300 stairs. I didnt mind at all..i even enjoyed it. But the rest of my family had to struggle. Rooms are...well i guess there ok. Bar is small and not very efficient at all. (more on that later) Pool is ok and close to everything. Keep in mind that the town just down the hill as SEVERAL roosters which will go on a rampage from 2-3AM to 6AM so bring earplugs or suffer the consequences. SERCIVE (everywhere exept the beach where it is very good) : THE major downside for the Brisas Los Galeones. Some of them are arrogant, rude, dont smile, and even make disrespectful noise or comments when you have the guts to ask for a drink that is something more complicated then a rum & coke. They will make you feel very cheap for asking it or will simply reply that an ingredient is missing even tho it is RIGHT there. I know because i often just went on the other side of the bar in order to make it myself since they were so reluctent. This can go all away when you make friends with the 2-3 that are ok. But if its not their shift or you just dont want to "befriend" them in order to get good service prepare yourself for quite a nightmare. The managers are especially not friendly at all. Brisas will definetely get an email from me regarding this issue. The beach staff are a lot better. If you do go there make friend with Yaomar and Elismer (who cleans the beach each morning) they noth treated us like friends and even invited is to eat or go around and we had lots of funs. Despite it all, i had a very good time. But only because i was with 5 of my friends and family. Its a pitty because the surrounding mountains are very nice. I think this hotel could become very nice if it could get in the right hands.

“This is a honest review ”
Well I have not been to this resort in a couple of years but I thought I would write a honest review of the hotel when we stayed. The bus ride is long, if you don't mind that then its OK Cuban people are kind no matter where you go but this resort has wonderful workers that do ask ALOT for tips. I have since been to many other areas in Cuba and never had this problem since. The rooms found at the back of the hotel in the hill do have alot of stair and you may get stuck carrying your bags a long way up. Bathrooms are old, beds are not good but if you don't care about any kind of comfort then no worries, lol The entertainment team is quite good but its like a outside venue. Also the food at this location was quite good for Cuba. The drinks are good as well. The beach is dark brown sand and the waters are dark and you can't see what is swimming around. There is however a nice coral reef about a 100 yards off the beach right in front for those that don't mind swimming in dark waters or quite a bit swimming to get to it. I did not find the water here good for swimming at all and I was swimmer. To get to the beach you have to go down a lot of stairs or wait for the elevator unless it dose not work...this happens to be a lot. It is very rustic here with not alot of anything around, so if you want to get to know the real Cuba come here and take there horse back ridding ride. Its truly beautiful and you can see how the people really live. The horses are very skinny so don't be freaked out. You can rent gas bikes and that is very fun!! Yes most if not all guests are older, this is not a party place at all, which was good for us. If I am being honest I can't tell anyone to come here but DO go to Cuba. I will not go back again just because I love other places in Cuba much more, like Cayo Coco, Cayo Largo, Varadaro etc. Cuba is great and the people are very accommodating and do appreciate every tip or gift you give them.

“Take a vacation with scum....... ”
This is our second time back.....and yes we will be back. I love the mountains...food is good...resort is good...people nice....beach is small, but who cares! The biggest problem I have is with the scum who come here knowing they can hire young girls cheap because its a poorer area. We flew out of Montreal last week happy to get out of the cold. Included on our flight were two 40 year old guys....i didnt take notice of them to be honest until they bought a 12 year old from a family for a night of fun....yes the parents were there...the bartering took place in front of people! This is common place...Girls from as young as 12 stand around looking scared to death while losers from all over the world come and buy them for the week or a night. Nothing is done to stop it, if anything the staff help get the men the girls.....and if the tastes of the men vary all they need to do is go to the beach where you can go in the bush with a male or female for even less then resort prices! I behaved and did not end up spending the week in cuban Jail....but I did pass on some names to the RCMP and hopefully some of these men get a visit soon! I would NOT recommend this place for people with kids as explaining why "grandpa" is getting it on with a 16 year old is hard.

        “Not good at all. ”
We can honestly say that this was our least enjoyable trips to Cuba until now. The hotel is about 1.5 hrs. from the airport off an isolated highway with nothing else in the vicinity. The buildings maintenance is in disarray, with crumbling walls and stairs. We understand that they had damage from hurricane Sandy two years ago. The beach seems to be particularly badly hit and what is left of the sand is very small. The water is murky, There are stones, dead trees, and weeds that you will have to watch when walking in the water. The beach is some ways from the hotel and there are a lot of stairs, the hotel is built on a hillside. The hotel seemed to be half empty, with very few people at the beach and occasionally we were the only ones there. We didn't feel safe on the beach. The staff was generally unfriendly, particularly the reception. The only friendly people we found were the construction workers repairing the damaged buildings and grounds keepers. The hotel is very isolated and far from everything The music at the hotel is oldies which may explain the overwhelming older guests. The new Oceana restaurant is basically an open air area with about 10 tables. We never saw anyone eating there. There's also a lot of prostitution in the hotel. The young girls with old men were everywhere, buffet, swimming pool and beach, there was no getting away from it and was disturbing. Definitely not something for children to see and made us lose our appetite in the restaurant. The massage we had was done by the doctor's assistant on what seemed to be an examination table. As for the gym, it was part of one of the buildings that were destroyed by the hurricane. The new gym is a small outside area beside the swimming pool and consists of a single treadmill completely unusable in the open air heat. The rooms are normal for Cuba. We noticed small insects in the shower floor every morning. Also had some insect bites in bed. There is no fridge in the room. Water bottles seem to be a high commodity at this hotel so you will need to bring your own from home. The price was cheap but we wouldn't return for free. The overall impression was one of desolation, not a happy place. Probably one of our least memorable trips to Cuba.

        “Eminently forgettable ”
I stayed at brisas Sierra mar for 2 weeks. Although the price was pretty good for 2 weeks, I'd never go back unless it was free and even then I'd have to be persuaded. This resort is definitely for an older crowd . I also noticed ALOT of sex tourism here . There were so many old disgusting men with young Cuban women and it made me sick by the end of the trip. All these men would come there to exploit these young women and it really bothered me after a while. The food at this resort was really bad. I know Cuba isn't supposed to be good in general but this was awful. Our meals kept getting smaller and smaller because we just couldn't take it anymore. I found some of the hotel staff to also be really rude. I felt like a lot of them genuinely hated me and it made me really uncomfortable. The beach at this resort was not good. The water was merky and full of weeds, rocks and sticks. Also the selection of drinks at this resort was terrible. They were always out of white wine and to make a piña colada was always too much to ask because they had to blend it all manually and it took them a long time. Some of the bartenders seemed like they hated me as well. And I always tipped. If you like white bread, a lot of annoying seniors who act like they own the place, a crappy beach, and unpleasant staff, this is the resort for you. Oh and also I got DESTROYED by Mosquitos, no exaggeration.

“Third Time - So NOT a Charm”
Husband and I stayed at this tiny boutique hotel 8 years ago and 7 years ago. Love the funky 200+ steep steps up and down to secluded beach; love the music;. people who work there so kind. Great group of regulars who have semi-retired there. Many repeaters who have been going there each winter for over 20 years. Most enjoyable conversations. This third visit - January 2014 - we brought our adult kids and their partners - for a relaxed; unplugged low-key holiday. Sadly, many in the hotel ended up with stomach problems - including some of our kids- which had never happened on earlier visits. Still - we remained mellow. Things turned sour when two of our adult kids asked for new beach towels and were severely chastised (yelled at) for "losing their towels." Never had it been communicated at any point that guests are to keep same towels throughout the visit. So many repeat customers that I guess the hotel figured all guests knew to keep their assigned towels. This was considered a very big deal and we were threatened with being charged for the towels. Then at 6:00 a.m. on the morning of our departure the manager announced that another of our adult kid's assigned towels was missing and even told our son he would not be allowed to leave the premises until the towel was found. We fumbled around and forked over what I believe was a trumped up tip for the manager - an extra $15.00. We were never rowdy throughout our stay. All of us were paying, tipping and respectful guests at this establishment. Truly left a very bad taste in our mouths. We will not be returning.

My travel agent told me that The Hotel Brisas Los Galeones is closed indefinitely as of November 2012. I heard that they lost the roof in Hurricane Sandy. We were hoping to go back, as we loved our trip last year. It is a real shame. However, the Brisas Sierra Mar is still open and I hope that people will consider going there as it is also a very nice place, with some great staff.

“Peaceful, relaxing, a gem in its own right ”
My fiance and I stayed at the Brisas Los Galeones for 5 nights in early February 2012. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, however after reading all of the reviews before we left we found there were actually some surprises; some good, some bad. I will start off by saying that we flew from Montreal into Holguin on Canjet. A completely satisfactory and pleasant direct flight. We knew what we were getting into as far as the long ride to the resort, but flying into Holguin instead of Santiago worked out better for us as far as cost and timing. We decided that a four hour drive in daylight where we could see and enjoy the Cuban sights would be better than a 2 hour drive in the dark. And we were totally right in our judgement. We bought beer for the ride at the Holguin airport -- the guys outside selling them are cheaper than inside, and they will take Canadian or US dollars if you have not yet changed into CUC. I think it is actually cheaper to pay in CAD. We were ready to relax, sip Crystal, and enjoy the ride... The first part of the drive was very pleasant and our driver stopped once for a photo op and a second time for a bathroom/refreshment break. It was just us and another couple in a mini-van; they were staying at the sister resort down the road. We really didn't notice the time pass, until the bumpy part of the road started. This would not be nearly as bad if we hadn't had so much beer. So, word to the wise: don't drink much after the pit stop in the middle of the drive! We were expecting the worst, based on everyone's reviews, but we really found that the road wasn't that bad. First of all, it is not bumpy the ENTIRE way. There are patches where the road is washed out, so it is very rough in those spots. It is not pleasant, but it's really not so bad either. It is not like driving on gravel; it is like driving through many many potholes (just like Montreal!) My fiance grew up in a rural area on gravel roads and he agreed that this was not nearly as bad as everyone had made it out to be. The most important thing to note is that the rough patches come and go, so you get a bit of relief here and there. Also, if you are traveling in a larger bus (as people who flew into Santiago seemed to be), you will notice the lumps and bumps a lot less. We made it to the resort in almost exactly 4 hours, including the two rest stops and a stop at the sister hotel to drop off the other passengers. As for the resort itself... on first impressions, the views were absolutely stunning -- we were blown away. Things were a bit tired looking as far as the hotel and furnishings, but we expected this. We have stayed at worse in Cuba and in no way was the place gross. It was quaint and in need of some updating here and there -- that's all. The grounds were very nicely looked after with beautiful plants and flowers. Our room was very clean and the balcony was big and very enjoyable. I would have liked something a bit more private as we could see our neighbors through the wooden lattice (which I am sure is there to make it private, but you can still see through it), but we couldn't really complain about that, it's just that more privacy on the balcony would have been nice! Expect that if you get up in the morning and step out in your underwear, Joe from Thunder Bay might be sitting there a few feet away with a book. The staff were exceptional, and the music was out of this world. We really couldn't believe some of the talent they had playing for us. It really blew our minds and we were surprised that people hadn't mentioned this more. One evening we were sitting at a restaurant at the bottom of the hill to the resort and we saw a guy from that night's band CARRYING A DOUBLE BASS UP THE HILL! Amazing. The performers come from the village of Chivirico and they are very dedicated to putting on a good show. Speaking of the Chivirico, we were also very surprised that more people have not mentioned it. I think a lot of people are intimidated by the hill, but if you can make it up and down the 300 steps to the beach, the hill is actually easier. The town is worth a visit, or many visits. If you are coming down the hill from the resort, there is a restaurant overlooking the water there on the left hand side, just at the bottom of the hill. We went there twice during our stay -- once just for drinks, and other time for dinner. We had four bottles of local beer, a glass of rum, two salads, two plates of rice and beans and two HUGE lobsters for under $30 including tip. It was the best lobster we've ever had and the atmosphere was great. There are other bars and restaurants in town, a small art gallery, a nice beach and waterfront park. To us, the fact that the village was right there was a huge highlight of the resort. It is not often in Cuba that you can get a taste of real life within 5 minutes walk of a resort. It is one of the reasons we booked Los Galeones, yet not that many people mention it here. The other reason that we booked Los Galeones was for the size of the resort. We don't like feeling like we're in a zoo and were thrilled it was only 30-something rooms. We were also really looking forward to the a la carte dining for the meals. On this front we were a bit disappointed. It was no biggie, but I was expecting that at a small resort we would not need wristbands. It is really nice not to wear one, but not the end of the world if you get stuck with one, either. I guess it was so that people could go back and forth to the other resort if they wanted. We were also a bit disappointed with the meals. I actually had quite high expectations because a lot of people's reviews say that the food was GOOD. I would say that the dinner was standard for Cuba. Some items were good, some were okay, and some were a bit disappointing. But that was only at dinner. Unfortunately we slept through breakfast every day except our last day when we had to leave before it was served! But we caught a glimpse of the breakfast buffet and grabbed some fruit and rolls for the road. Everything at breakfast looked very nice and I was rather impressed by the selection. Lunch, at the beach bar (not sure what you get by the pool, we didn't eat there), was also excellent. We love barbecue and it was so nice to have freshly grilled food by the water every day. We really enjoyed that aspect. SO, to sum it up: dinner was so-so (though the service was very cute), breakfast LOOKED good, and lunch at the beach was awesome. One other thing I found a bit disappointing is that there is not an open air dining room. There are a few tables poolside, but they are often full, and if you take one you can't see the absolutely amazing musicians performing for you! So you have to eat inside, but then you can sit outside with a drink afterward -- most nights the musicians moved outdoors once everyone was finished eating. It was no big deal after I got used to eating inside, but the first night I was a bit surprised/disappointed. Again, no big deal, but eating outside would have been nicer! The beach itself is small and rocky/weedy on the bottom, but we really enjoyed it. If you want white sand, this is definitely not for you, but if you appreciate nature and want to snorkel and splash a bit, it's a lot of fun. We didn't see a lot of fish when we were snorkeling, but we were just amazed at how clear the water was. We could see EVERYTHING, and it was SO WARM. It was like a bathtub and just so much fun to be able to walk along and see the little fish and coral and everything at our feet. It is shallow so you can walk really far out and just look at everything at the bottom. But BRING WATER SHOES! There are a lot of urchins and other not-so-soft things down there... AND, the final myth I'd like to bust is the stairs! We also did not find those so bad! Granted, we are in decent physical condition -- I would not recommend them to anyone who has limited mobility -- but we are hardly in peak physical condition and had little problem with them. I have to admit that the afternoons after a few drinks were a bit harder than the first day when we ran down there (and back up) after arrival, but still, no big deal! All in all we really had a great stay -- it was so calm and quiet -- about 8-12 people at the beach everyday. We really felt like we were lucky to be there; like we found an unknown treasure. This is place is really unique, and that is why I would recommend it. If you want something glamourous, go elsewhere! Brisas Los Galeones is special, and we felt special staying there. The views are amazing, the weather perfect, the water warm, and the drinks plentiful!

A nice ,small and quiet resort. A rough road from the airport, quite interesting when travelled during the day. Hotel rooms adequate, spectacular scenery from the balcony, rooms in two and three hundreds block. Many repeaters (an older crowd) looking for a quiet place(NO BLARING MUSIC AROUN THE POOL),An average food affected by reluctance by the delivery trucks to conquer the "road" from Santiago.A very good staff, including the manager( Eddie).Small beach ,but with only 4 to 6 people, does not feel crowded.(not too many visitors bother to walk the 300 steps to the beach(a bonus for some). A visit to nearby Chivirico is a must to find more about life in Cuba.(safe place to walk around and mingle with the locals).Lets hope that the road will improve or this place will be a history.( that would be a shame).

“great price - not for everyone”
We just returned from Los Galeones and not sure if we would go again - don't think so. This was our second time - and things have changed a lot. The road in/out is terrible, 2.5 hours of major pot holes and ruts, pure misery. The staff is great, the beach is lovely and private. Lots of stairs but not a problem. The food disappointing, no screens on the patio doors, noisy airconditioning, very noisy village. Hard to get a good nights sleep. Seems to be under new ownership and on a very tight budget. The price was good but the long horrible drive was not. Strongly recommend buying the VIP Service at the airport - makes all the difference.

“Gorgeous Scenery, but Hotel Needs Improvements ”
I stayed in Brisas Los Galeones for one week in April 2008, and I would like to write unbiased review, to help fellow traveler (I find some reviews of this hotel are simply exaggerated): - The best part of the vacation is the true beauty of this part of Cuban coast. Going to the hotel from airport is very exciting, scenic ride (the road is in dire need of repair, as stated in other reviews). - The hotel itself is very small, on top of the hill, and the view is fantastic. Waking up and hearing farm animals across the hill was very charming. However, my bed was very uncomfortable, and if I had it four years ago, when I was battling my injured back, I wouldn't be even able to use it. Air-conditioning is very noisy - useless when you are trying to sleep. Watter pressure is very low, sometimes non-existant. - The food: much better than in factory-style hotels. The best I had in my three trips in Cuba. I found some of the dishes still too heavy (avoid bacon). - The beach - after you descend 300 steps, you discover secluded paradise. However, bring watter shoes, otherwise, going into the watter will be near-impossible. The first four days of my stay, the sea was very rough, which made swimming very dangerous. - Entertainment: live music in the evening, in dining room. All musicians I heard were simply brilliant. After that, unfortunately, there is nothing else to do but drink. - Trips: take one at least. Get out of the hotel, and Sierra Maestra will overwhelm your senses with joy. If you want to do something on your own, be aware: roads are horrible, and taxis are hard to get. - Conclusion: this could be one of the best tourist destinations in Caribbean. However, some serious investments are needed, to make it a true gem. This way, it will stay popular with less-demanding, low-paying, senior tourists from Canada.

All the reviews reflect what we liked/disliked. Just wanted to bring to your attention that it is also the sister hotel of Brisas Sierra Mar, and you can spend a day there if you like, there is a shuttle; the reviews for Sierra Mar are not listed for the Santiago de Cuba Area , I don't know why not. Also The DELTA LOS GALEONES CLUB LODGE and HOTEL BRISAS LOS GALEONES are one and the same place. I don't know which of the two is the correct name. Anyway, enjoy your vacation, it is beautifull there.

The hotel is old, well kept and much better once the elevator was working, too many stairs. The staff is friendly, the odd one was not so happy but that didn't effect us much. Lots of Cubans on vacation this time of the year. Everyone was friendly and lots tried to get to know you. The beach is nice, not great, just nice. beach bar and the sweetest little restaurant right in the jungle. One huge issue, the hurricane from a year and a half ago took out a lot of stuff, like the exercise room and the washrooms at the beach. That is just bad, because we know what people are doing in the ocean. You can stay at the pool if you want , lots of washrooms. The pool was green for a couple of days before they got it fixed. The room we had on the 1st floor was a nice location looking out on the ocean with nothing in front of you. Problem is the critters just wander the open hall and come in under the door. Mostly small crabs, a couple of cockroaches,(and they're big) and the large crabs just ran around, they are big. We got of the elevator one day and a Cuban girl was yelling at me and pointing at my shirt. The largest black spider I have ever seen right there on my shirt (stomach) 6 inches round, I brushed it off. But wow, talk about scare the crap out of you. This is definitely the jungle. The food was good, not great, this is Cuba. Lots of bread and cheese and meats to get you by, eggs at breakfast are always good and lots of fresh fruit. I guess the bottom line is we would go back, all the important stuff for us was good. Never in August, the heat was unbelievable. A tour came back from town and said it hit 42 degrees centigrade at noon. It felt like that every day and the humidity made it worse, you had to go to your air conditioned room for relief. So, enjoy, a nice place to get away and the price was great. Tom Googh

This is rural Cuba! But with a hotel. We wanted to relax, and that's what we did. Every room has a view of the bay because it is built into the side of a cliff face. That means a lot of stairs if you are not willing to wait for the elevators. Since we are not averse to stairs, we stayed on the top floor and had a very quiet room. The staff were excellent! We have been here twice and are planing a third trip to Sierra Mar in 2015. I agree with most of the other reveiews, both good and bad. It all depends on what you are looking for in an "all inclusive."

For a property owned and operated by Cubans they should overhaul it and show it as a gem. Reception staff were the least friendly I have ever dealt with in Cuba. Some staff really tried to make it a great week but others really did not seem happy. Many individuals that I met have been going to this property for years and go a number of times a year. I won't be one of them.

We have been to this resort about ten times. The staff are just so friendly, but each time we go, there are more repairs and work that needs to be done. The last bathroom we had, was really run-down with a hole in the wall tiles and lots of chipped and broken floor tiles. Very difficult to close curtains because there weren't enough hooks to keep the curtains up properly. Our air conditioning didn't work either. The food isn't half as good as it used to be. I don't think we will go back, but we will miss all of the friendly staff.

        “January Vacation ”
The main reason we picked Brisas Sierra Mar was because of the available scuba diving sites. The staff was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful all the time. There are sites available for all level of divers, and the dive master made sure we were taken to good sites with abundant sea life to keep which was relevant to our diving experience. The only issue we had is that we did not get to swim with a Barracuda, but hey, that goes with the dive. We were not disappointed in the diving at all and would not hesitate to recommend this resort to anyone interested in diving. We did not realize that this resort was still recovering from Hurricane Damage that took place 2 years previous. This meant the beach was very limited and some of the recreational buildings were still not available to customers. The elevator for the upper rooms was also not working. This started to take its toll towards the end of the trip, as there were a lot of very steep stairs that needed to be climbed to get to our rooms. The food was very basic without much variety and it was difficult to get into the a la carte restaurants. The staff was friendly, except for the front desk, which always seemed like they were being disturbed every time we asked them a question. They would refuse to answer any questions that were not relative to the front desk. I would think that all the trips and entertainment being offered is pretty standard and the front desk should be familiar with what is going on and be able to answer tourist?s questions. It's the little things that make the trips pleasurable.

        “Be patient.... And patient”
Located on the south coast of Cuba where the weather is hot and dry with a breeze overlooking the ocean with a house band daily, and outdoor piano bar in lobby. The swim up bar bartender was great and Yodanis in the lobby bar is sincere friendly and helpful. The bar service in this hotel may be a little busy at times but the level of professionalism is second to none. Unfortunately not all rooms are ocean view but many are. Be sure to ask for the lower section located closest to the beach or you will be doing a stair workout of up to 4 double flights of stairs without elevator access. Check in is great. The hotel representative is at the airport to give you the room key and the Bell boy is waiting upon arrival after the 70 minute scenic drive along the ocean to the resort. Extra charge of 2 cuc per day for the safe and late check out is 20 cuc The room was average but clean. CNN , TSN, CTV and an English movie channel. There was a Toronto maple leaf game on one night but attended dinner instead. Shower only with warm water at every attempt of use. The electricity is 220 volt only so bring an adapter. There is a VIP upgrade that doesn't give much other than a different bracelet and 2 more visits to the a la carte restaurants. The Cuban was best. The lamb was the best meal of the week . Unfortunately you are pressured to buy wine in this restaurant as they will not serve the regular inclusive selection. The buffet was clean and service was good most of the time. Unfortunately the tip pooling doesn't promote exceptional service but you should find a server that meets your needs within a couple visits. The food is hit and miss, however the buffet has the best red wine on the resort. The feature item will run out every night quickly. The feature is usually pork roast or turkey. The other selections are constant. Rice , beans, French fries , hot dogs and fried fish. There is a limited salad bar with some cheese, tomatoes, Cabage and cucumbers. The hotel has papaya, pineapple, melons, sometimes grapefruit and once oranges. Fresh bread every day and it is good, right from the oven. The desert is simple and although there is a good variety if you go early, but the selection runs out quickly. Ice cream seems popular if you are willing to wait in line sometimes for 30 minutes at lunch. The pizza is good but you could be waiting for a long time as they are prepared individually one at a time. Breakfast is a little better with bacon daily. There are eggs or omelette to order, fresh juice, coffee tea, cappuccino and breads cheese etc. My only complaint was the hotel not having basic needs. They hotel runs out of things continually. Such as cups, rum, pineapple juice, blender mixes , milk, tea, pizza, French fries and just about anything else you can think of. I know that " this is Cuba" but I'm sure a little more product management could alleviate some of these issues. The water sports are descent. The dive master is fluent and skilled. You have an option for 5 dives and lessons to get international certification for 300 cuc the beach bar is ok... If you bring your own cup but be prepared to pee on a tree as the washroom is not located on the beach level. There is a children's program without a schedule or activity schedule. The hotel needs to provide more for the worker to make this a better program. Annie the worker is nice and speaks fluent. She gets along great with all children and is easy discuss any concerns you have. Be sure to communicate any allergies or special needs you may have as there is no formal processes as other hotels have. The hola sun tour reps are quite informative until the excursions are booked and then they have made their commission. Then trips are cancelled and changed without notice. Very confusing and frustrating as it seems the priority changes. The tour rep doesn't go to the airport as it seems his intrests are better suited in meeting Canadian women and selling excursions. I would recommend finding your own private guide as it will be better , cheaper and just as safe. There are many things to do but you have to ask the bartender, servers and staff to find the local culture. There is a local baseball program every Friday where you can get a free bus into town and play or watch. There is a nature walk every morning at 8 am. With everything said, the location is good, people are friendly. The drinking water is safe from the tap, our family didn't get sick once from the food or water. The location is safe, weather is great. Just sit back and think about the little things in life that make you smile. Life is too short.... And so is money... This hotel will not break the bank..... And btw this hotel offers 33 cuc per day all inclusive for stays over 21 days .... Many Canadians stay for months yearly...You decide!

It is located on the ocean in beautiful hilly country about 1 1/4 hours bus drive west of Santiago de Cuba on a newly paved road. It is in a remnote location, with no town close by. It still has damage from Hurricane Sandy, which is being worked on. A small part of the beach is gone, but there is still a 100 yard stretch remaining. Sadly half the loungers were broken and you have to get there early to get a good one in the shade. The food is good safe and plentiful, but typically of Cuba it is a bit repetitive. The pool is shallow and mostly for volleyball. There is hardly any shade around the pool, so it gets very hot. It is noisy in the afternoon, so the younger set will enjoy it more. All the rooms have excellent views. We only visited the resort twice for day visits, so we cannot comment on the interior of the rooms. It does not merit 4 stars, maybe 3 1/2.

        “Cubanacan Greed ”
Arrived with my friend Dec29, 2014 ... Dec30 went to the pool area in the late afternoon, got towels and rested there for a couple of hours, at the time to get ready for dinner we asked people at the towel shop what to do with them , she said "you can leave it there" ...when we returned the towels were gone. Even though at the orientation it was mentioned that if you loose a towel you have to pay (within a long list of other rules and admonitions), in our first few hours in the hotel we got involved in a game of security-publicrelations-holasunrepresentative after us to pay for the towels and us arguing about the veracity of the so call missing towels. By the way the price for each "blue beach towel" is CUC$15.00 (same as can$15). On Jan2,2014 , I was summoned by the trio to explain that after all the investigations done the result is that we have to pay, being a CUBANACAN policy... CUSTOMER SERVICE SUCKS, or inexisting ... We didn't want that to spoil our vacation , even though I got bacterial infection on Dec 31st and have to visit the dr twice while there. Other stories heard about towels in the resort gone missing made me consider that it is a money making system for them. Maybe I will elaborate more later about this trip's experiences.

This is an older three star resort that is well maintained and staffed by amazing people. Most of the guests during our visit were repeaters, with some who have been there every year since it opened, 20 years ago. The two specialty restaurants are lovely with wonderful entertainment and excellent staff. The food is quite good. Entertainment in the piano bar lounge was amazing every night. The buffet was quite good, but somewhat limited when we were there since the resort was only about half full. There was plenty to eat and food areas were kept exceptionally clean. All staff were more than willing to go above and beyond from reception right through to the room staff. There is an offsite restaurant, "Oceano" that is a must. It is about a 20 minute walk from room to restaurant. We went for lunch three times during the week we were there and were never disappointed with the food, the service and most especially the price. The resort is still rebuilding from the last hurricane that swept through and so the beach is not what it once was. Overall it needs a little TLC but is definitely good value. Bus ride to the resort is well over an hour, so be sure to get a beverage at the airport before heading to the bus.

“I would say you get a little more than what you pay for..... ”
and that's a very rare occurrence in life. Just to clarify, our trip took place in January 2012, not 2013. Scroll down menu did not give me a proper choice. 80 km trip from Santiago Airport takes indeed about 2 hours.Think about it as apart of a package. In daylight, views are breathtaking. We loved the size. Only 32 rooms, you get to know everybody, and everybody gets to know you. Staff is really friendly and helpful, even if you don't tip exceedingly generously. I have read a few reviews with contrary opinions, but it was not our experience. 298 steps to the beach is no biggie, really. Beach is small, but nice and clean, with very attentive staff. You get to eat barbecued fish, and it doesn't taste like recycled rag. In the dining room, there is buffet style breakfast and a la carte dinner. Breakfast is more then satisfying, both in terms of variety and freshness. Dinner gets repetitive, but I would not complain. Whatever you get, will be fresh and tasty. Excellent music every night. No sound system blaring around the pool, and no drunk idiots. Rooms are spacious and cleaned meticulously. Bathrooms w little "seasoned", but not malfunctioning. Generally, in need of a little TLC, but it may already have been fixed after the Hurricane Sandy. I don't think library has been mentioned. It consists of about one full bookcase, no doubt left behind by guests, comes very handy. We like it so much that we will visit it again this coming January 2014. This time around we will visit Santiago de Cuba and climb Sierra Maestra, something we did not do last time.

        “Paradise in Cuba ”
Brisas Hotels-Sierra Mar and Los Galeones are located about 80k from the Santiago de Cuba airport, Sierra Mar is a 200 room resort while the sister hotel has 34 rooms. Los Galeonas is built on top of a peninsular with a view of the pretty town of Chivirico. The view from all 5 blocks of rooms is spectacular as you can see the ocean from three sides as the peninsular juts out into the sea. This provides the opportunity for Adults Only to relax and chill out. Facilities are, a swimming pool situated in the middle of the aforementioned blocks with easy access to your room, an exercise facility, the bar, a hot tub and a well stocked dining room. The dining room is a cozy place to relax, have a drink and take your pick of the menue. The beach is accessible by descending a picturesque set of 298 steps; there you will find a well stocked beach bar, with a BBQ to cook your wish....the fish is really fresh. The Staff is second to none, well trained, friendly and ready to introduce you to their family when you tour the town of Chivirico...There is so much friendliness here that visitors return year after year, I have been to Los Galeonas at least 10 times, while good friends of ours have been 14 or 15 times..And that is the norm. Entertainment is provided at noon time around the poolside while, a group will play for you during your evening meal...There will be a pig roast close to the swimming pool, when dining tables will be arranged around the pool, and another group will play traditional Cuban songs for you. I just love the place and am even a God Father to one of the children here. I generally bring down sporting (soccer) gear from my Son's Sports Store, and then help coach for the short time I'm here. The children love it....and so do I.

        “A gem in the rough”
and only for those who have traveled extensively and don?t need always the absolute lap of luxury to make them happy. It?s a place where you will find many repeats, some who have come annually for fifteen years or longer. Intimidating ??little club?? ? yes and no: it does depend on you. But there?s no denying, some of these folks know the staff like an extended family and you might feel ??left out??. Some have their fixed table on the patio, and you better never try to sit there, unless invited that is. But again, it?s up to how you try to fit in, and all will be well. The resort is ideally located at the top of a hill with spectacular views, is open to any breezes off the sea and is very small, as resorts go. At night the gentle surf of the waves down at the beach will lull you to sleep. A total of 32 rooms, adults only and the average age of the guests is usually well past the ??late middle age??. The rooms are basic, but have everything you might need. The resort has good bones, but as time goes on, repairs are not always possible due to the overall problem with parts in this country. If I found one fault ? Management does not seem to ??walk the premises?? on a regular schedule and make note of what should be fixed and then follow through. Many little things could be nipped in the bud, before they become larger problems; but that?s my background, and yes, I did repair a few things as I came across them. I always travel with my Leatherman?s tool and duct tape plus a few other ??essentials??. No big deal. The staff is great, out to please and is trying hard; food is basic but always enough and the drinks are good and plentiful. Don?t expect vintages in the selection of wines and spirits, just enjoy what you get and remember, most Cubans don?t have such easy access to it as you do. The beach is a healthy 300 plus steps down (and back up) to the water, but once there you will be one of a few; there?s a beach bar and at noon they will bring down food. Lots of basic lounges and chairs, and good shade (which is rare on many beaches). Bring shoes to go into the water ? there?s a reef out about 300 feet and you?ll need to get past it to swim free and dive or snorkel. Watch out for some undertow. At low tide there?s virtually no water inside the reef close to shore, so no swimming off the beach. The beach is granular sand and clean. The small pool is very nice, clean and hardly used ? I did say many folks are older and prefer to simply lounge and socialize. Goats will come through once or twice a day and have a drink from the pool ? quite a show. In the evening ( at dinner) they get in some local bands ? some really quite good. The hat will be passed, since the hotel does not pay the musicians. On this subject, change your bills for lots of three CUC and five CUC bills to allow you to contribute; same goes for tips, which, although not required, are always appreciated and go a long way. The Front desk will exchange most currencies and the bank in the village below will also: bring your passport. There used to be a shuttle to Brisas Sierra Mar, but this was not operational for some time now. Likely a broken down vehicle, and no parts. You have the same facility privileges at Sierra Mar, but most people are content to stay where they are, with a few visits to Chivirico below or one of the tours which are offered. You also can rent a scooter from Sierra Mar and they will bring it over. I?d suggest it would be nice to have two or three on location at Galeones all the time ? for those of us, who still want to ??discover??. Since everybody mentions the road to the resort, here a few comments: yes, in stretches it?s really bad ? five km/h or less, but the whole drive will be done in about two hours, give or take a bit. My tip, get a few cold Buccaneers before you leave the airport and don?t fret ? you?ll get there. My private opinion ? this road tends to sort out the wheat from the chaff so to speak: if it?s not your bag, you will not be back. But those of us, who always must look around the next corner, to see what?s there, will have no problem with it. Just make sure you fly into Santiago de Cuba, because it?s the closest airport. Enjoy!

“Be very careful which airport you use ”
The hotel is very pleasant with an excellent high site overlooking the water on three sides. All meals are served by friendly staff; not all menu items are always available, but you can always find something you will enjoy. There is supposed to be a shuttle to the Sierra Mar property, but we were informed it was not operative. We found the resort on the internet and used Holasun. The booking information was inadequate; there was a notation of "mandatory information", but it was in French and did not show on the screen. Although the form indicated we were going to Santiago, we in fact were routed through Holguin, which is not the local airport for Santiago. We booked and paid the trip and then found the printed invoice information indicated the trip between the airport and resort was to be 4 hours!! In fact, the trip back (by taxi) was 5 hours. When the seven day vacation includes so much time getting to and from the airport, the enjoyment is very much lessened. If you decide to go to a nice, comfortable, quiet resort, this is the place, but do not make the mistake we did and go via Holguin. You might even want to wait until the road from Santiago to the resort is smoothed out. By the way, the Holasun representative never showed up at the resort and we could not get propere information on how and when we were to be returned to Holguin for the trip back. The hotel staff indicated the drive could take up to six hours and that for international flight, passengers should be at the airport three hours in advance!!!

“Quiet beautiful getaway after a dusty bike ride from Santiago ”
... that is, if you can still get up the 30 degree sections of the hill to get to it! We pushed our bikes the last bit and were ready for shower, rest and food after a long haul on from Santiago de Cuba (with a 30+ km nasty gravel section). This is a neat little spot on a hill off of the town of Chivirico, and the rooms are large, pleasant and have decks with spectacular views (we had the sunset side - amazing). We emerged from our shower just as an afternoon snack was put on a table - after everyone had their pick, we cleared the rest without hesitation. The other guests (about 10-15) all appeared to come from Quebec and hung out in their little clique. We were greeted only by two of them and that might have been a good thing. Dinner was ok, but not plentiful (at least for bicyclists like us). Breakfast buffet somewhat made up for it and we upped our food intake. This may not be the place for budget travellers, as the night costs CUC 130 (all inclusive), but we found the comfort, quiet and scenery (also beach access via a long stairway) made it worthwhile. As for the Quebecers, just force-join them or ignore them.

“What a great place to relax! ”
Being that this was my first trip to Cuba, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. However, this was a great place to relax. If you don't mind the road between Santiago and the resort, which is in a little village called Chivirico, it is well worth it. This is a very quiet resort for adults only and very friendly staff. The food was great and I would recommend this resort to anyone wanting a quiet place to relax and unwind.

“Don't confuse Los Galeones with Sierra Mar (sister properties) ”
Too often the two hotels are linked and it's hard to determine which review applies to which hotel. Los Galeones is completely different from Sierra Mar which is a much larger resort type hotel. Los Galeones is much more intimate without all the trappings of typical tourist hotels. I will visit Los Galeones in January 2012 for two weeks and will report back and do comparison between two. Watch this space.

        “Unique, satisfying. ”
This is a small hotel, and it has a charm all of its own. The road from Santiago to Chivirico is lousy, and this is an understatement. However, we have come to think of the road trip as part of the entertainment. Many interesting things to see on the coastal road that allows views to the mountains. Many would think of the steps down to the private beach as an issue but we like to think of it as inbuilt exercise. I would point out that the claim of 300 steps is a malicious rumor. It is only 392 steps. My wife and I are pushing 70 and we had no trouble with the stairs. The reward is a completely private beach with ample shadow if that is desired. There is a small cabana on the beach where one can have grilled meat and fish at noon and drinks throughout the day. The food is not fantastic but very solid; we enjoyed the salads and the roast pork as well as the varied fish. Drinks are freely available and one does not have to stand in line. The staff are outstandingly friendly and personable. Rooms are all at ground level and good sights are available pretty well. Some of the many return-guests prefer the side that looks straight out to the sea. We prefer the 500 block, where we can have a view of the sea as well as of a bay and part of Chivirico. Because the hotel is located on the top of a little rock (hence the steps to the beach) views are lovely all around. We had music every night. Because the place is so small, the musicians (ranging from a solo guitar player to a band with 7 musicians) are very close and the quality (as elsewhere in Cuba) is excellent. We prefer the entertainment here much to the one you have in larger places. This is an adult only place and sensibly so. If you are easily bored, this is not the place for you. If you know how to entertain yourself and can enjoy little things (the free ranging goats on the hill along the steps to the beach, some beautiful birds, and satisfying though not spectacular snorkeling), you will love it. There is a reason why there are so many repeat guests at this place. On the side opposite to the steps to the beach is the steep road that leads you down to Chivirico, an authentic small town that gets you right into Cuba. There is a small library; guests very often bring books along and leave them when returning home. Almost all of the guests are Canadian; however, there is a daily trickle of people who travel Cuba via rental car or bicycle. These stay a day or two and usually are very interesting to talk to (and appreciative of this little paradise, as one German couple who had traveled around Cuba called it.. Finally, this region of Cuba is the warmest and most likely to deliver good weather in our winter months - unlike the Atlantic regions that can be unpleasant on occasion if cool weather strikes in January of February. .

“**try this place or it will be lost ---QUITE AND PEACEFUL ”
Norm and I along with 5 other friends visited for 2 weeks from Feb 13 though Feb 27/11. This was the 17th time there for Norm and I. We go every year to the same hotel and once or twice we made it more than once in a year. There has never been a need for us to go anywhere else in Cuba since everything we are looking for is at Los Galeones. From the beginning in 1997 to 2011 we have always haD the Cuban people's well being in mind and have always tried to tip then with the things that they are most in need of since it is pretty impossible to buy what they need. We also tip them with CUCs Lately vegetable seeds, razors, shoes and hair care products have been at the top of the list. The hotel is very small (32 rooms) and comfortably furnished. The food is not always wonderful but it is wholesome and there is a good variety (menus not buffet) . You will not go hungry. If you like peace and solitude the beach is a wonderful way to spend yours days. A 297 step trip down to the beach is not a killer and we are all 60 or over. The way the steps are set up it is easy to stop and rest if one feels the need. The beach is a small private cove and although there is coral in the water snorkeling is great most days- bring your water shoes). Lunch at the beach is served daily and drinks like beer, wine and rum drinks are available. If you prefer shade the trees offer good cover from the sun and the breeze keeps you comfortable in comparison to the heat at the pool upstairs. Try this place or it will be lost.

“Still our Favourite....Grace and Humour , it starts at the top ”
We were at Los Galeones during the first opening week of this winter season. We have enjoyed this resort four times and have never been disappointed. There were 31 guests this time, the highest number we have experienced. The staff handled the start up glithches and numbers well. We love the small size, location, scenery (mountains, vegetation and ocean) and quietness of the resort. The rooms have attractive wooden cathedral ceilings with fan , walk in shower, and nice balconies. The beach is perfect for us. It is not miles of white sand, it is a cove. We spend our day there, sitting under a canopy of vegetation alive with birds. It has a swimmable reef with interesting selection of fish and coral, rocky outcroppings on each end , where one can view small fish in tidal pools , watch shore birds. Yes, we enjoy the 296 - 300 steps walk down and appreciate the staff who haul drinks, food down to the beach bar.To top this off , a daily barbecue for lunch. Never had a red flag day in 6 visits to the area. The roaming of local farm animals also delights us. We enjoyed all our meals. Our last night, Cuban night was a lovely spread . The staff haul all the tables out around the pool and take the effort to put linen on the tables. Some staff that had served us during the day , were there for the evening and in the early AM next day as we left. The kitchen also opened early providing us with a full breakfast prior to departure at 6am. The entire staff from cleaning, maintenance, kitchen are exceptional, as mentioned grace and humour sets the tone. Local talented musicians play during the evenings. Negatives Noisy wall air condtioners and visitors who seem to think it necessary to run them while not even in their room. Lack of 7yr. HCL rum but the expresso was perfect. The road is worse and it does take 21/2 hrs. from the airport. I am not entirely put off by this as I view it as my tour. I much prefer this rather than blasting down a 4 lane highway as in our last trip to Mexico (It could be any North American trip from a city airport) but when I'm on the bus in Cuba, I feel I'm traveling and the adventure has begun and whew I'm not driving and don't own the vehicle that is being shaken apart. We plan to return provided that we don't get bumped to sierra mar as has occured on several occasions when we have booked in the past.

“Miniature paradise - ideal to disconnect ”
We stayed here in May as the hotel was about to close, so there were only 6 guests. It is a place to get away, do nothing and enjoy the spactacular views! The bungalows are arranged around the top of the hill, therefore almost everyone has an ocean view room. Site is lovely and clean. The staff very friendly and helpful! Just down the hill is Chivirico, where we had the best fish in Cuba. At the Ranchon, just by the beach for only 1 CUC! Dislikes: the only things I can complain about are: the fact there is no fridge in the rooms, our air conditionning was not really cooling anything and most of the rooms here have 2 single beds. Would go back for some relaxing time and to visit our friends in Chivirico!

“Just can't do that road again :( ”
Spent two weeks at Los Galeones. It was our second trip to this resort and it was good to see the wonderful staff, Nancy and old friends again. However the road to the resort is considerably worse than the last time we were there and we didn't believe that could be possible. The buses are beautiful but the road looks as though it is in a war zone, huge holes and the bus just creaps back and forth, back and forth trying to avoid the potholes in all over 2 hours of torture. The shuttle from the resort to the sister resort of Sierra Mar only operated a couple of times while we were there and there was no wine at all, sometimes no mint for Mojitos and the stock of liquor was really limited, plenty of rum but very little of anything else, not even cream for Spanish Coffee. The food was good but if you are spending more than one week there it gets very monotinous as the menu simply repeats itself and the choices and quantities are limited. It looks as though there is a real tightening of the belt with the owners but they are really shooting themselves in the foot because an all inclusive resort shouldn't run out of the things this resort was running out of. This is so unfortunate as the staff are wonderful and try their very best to make everyone feel welcome and looked after. The entertainment at night was very good and the atmosphere lovely. Sadly, as much as we like the resort and the staff we will definately not be returning to this resort. I think the road has finally taken its toll!

“For a certain market segment this is paradise! ”
Los Galeones is definitely a unique location and therefore caters to a unique segment of the market! If your desire is to enjoy picturesque scenery, quiet relaxing environment with out the pressure of organized activities you will enjoy this property! Cuban food is bland, but good. The a la carte menu offers basic food well presented! Many of the guests are return guests of anywhere from 5 to 15 years. Staff is excellent in offering personalized services If one considers vacationing in Cuba, you must accept that supplies, due to the embargo, can be restricted, electricity can be sporatic, though the Hotel has it own generator. The Hotel consists of five singled floored wings all offering excellent views. The rooms are twin or king sized furnished., all with their own balconies. Steps to the beach have become famous (300 on youtube) with Luvy the dog ! Daily BarBq on the beach. Nighty local music and one noon time BarBQ pool side and weather permitting an evening "Cuba Night "with pig roast! Have been to Los Galeones 9 times in 8 yeaars!

we have just returned from a memorable one week escapade in a special experience. when we were their, the hotel was practically to ourselves, we were only 6 guests and had the impression we were at our private estate with our staff standing by to serve us with a smile.in the morning we went down to the beach where waiting was Yaumar who had caught fish for lunch on the bbq. we went snorkeling in clear calm water (very warm) and we felt like jacques cousteau exploring rich marine life and the amazing coral reef. after lunch we would swim again and lay in the shade resting undisturbed.after the day the walk up the 300 steps was a welcome exercise. then it would be the pool or the jacuzzi and a pina colada or a mohito. the supper was always excellent and various, the service was also great. the rooms were always very clean . i found the matress in my king size bed a little soft but had a deep restfull sleep every night.in the morning we would have our coffee on our balcony and contemplate the carrabean in all of its splendor.we met very kind and interesting staff and guests and will certainly return to reconnect with the true sense of gratitude.

        “'super' natural experience ”
My husband and I stayed for a week in February, 2008. We are both in our late-twenties and felt a bit out of our element for the first couple of days, as the crowd is tad older with many cherished regulars. But once we relaxed and got comfortable we really felt welcome and enjoyed ourselves tremendously. The staff is fantastic, the feel for the place is totally authentic, the adults-only restriction is kind of nice too if you don't have kids, (there are limited facilities here) and you quickly meet the other guests as there are only thirty-two rooms . In order to enjoy yourself though, you have to let go a bit and loosen up. The walk to the beach takes 300 steps down winding stairs so you have to pace yourself (more so, back up). The beach is an awesome natural beach, dark sand, goats and a beach dog, an amazing bbq lunch and fantastic snorkelling. I highly recommend if you just want to relax, a fantastic 'natural beach' holiday. I wouldn't recommend this place for the food, although it was always fresh and I never went hungry, it is good, but this is a very small resort. If you can arrange some specialties, try talking to the staff about it, as the fish and seafood are amazing but may take some effort on your part to attain. I highly recommend the beer, the wine, the Pina Colodas and the Mohitos, and anything else with rum. If I could choose a day trip again, I would rather go see a coffee plantation than the Santiago de Cuba tour, the country-side is beautiful and the city is not quite the same. We met some really lovely people while we were there, we hope to see them again some day, we would definitely go back (hopefully sooner than later). Cheers, N&B

“A Real Gem: Peaceful Paradise Awaits! ”
It took a while for me to write this review, but Los Galeones still lives in my memory, so here goes... My boyfriend and I (both in our 30's) travelled to Cuba for our first Caribbean trip together from Jan. 17th - 24th, 2006. After a couple of months of research, we decided upon the Hotel Brisas Los Galeones. We liked the fact that it was a small adults only hotel with access to the larger sister resort, Sierra Mar. This hotel attracts a lot of return visitors, especially from Canada, and with good reason. The staff were all friendly, cheerful and helpful. We especially liked Gladys, one of the servers. The food was much better than we expected. Many regulars brought their own spices and condiments as the food can sometimes be a little bland. Some also brought snacks, although we didn't, we never went hungry! The entertainment, a local band from the village of Chivirico (located at the foot of the steep hill on which the hotel is located!) were very talented. They performed almost every night during and after dinner, which added some extra "Cuban flavour" to the experience. We bought their CD! Because the hotel is located on the hill top, it provides breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea and the lush, mountainous country side surrounding it. On "Cuba Night" tables were set up around the pool, a wonderful buffet style dinner (including a roasted pig) was set up and the band performed many wonderful songs, which had most of the guests dancing. The weather was perfect the entire week we were there, ranging from about 25-32 degrees celsius. Only one afternoon did it become overcast with light rain lasting about 20 minutes. Then it cleared up and was beautiful again. Rooms were charming and clean, housekeeping did a wonderful job. We always left tips for them, either cash or some of the items we brought (like hair clips, panty hose, toiletries etc.) We stayed in the 100 block, and had a nice view from our balcony. I think the 200 block has the nicest sea views. We had a pet frog in our bathroom during our entire stay! He was cute and harmless, suction-cupped to the wall mostly. He probably helped to keep our room insect free! The air conditioning was a tad noisy, but worked fine, and we usually had it turned off during the night as we were comfortable without it. Beds were on the firm side, but we had no problem sleeping! The beach was small and secluded and because of the small size of the hotel, we often had the beach almost to ourselves! The water was lovely, clear and warm and there is coral (so bring some water shoes!) There are also nice sandy pools you can sit and wade in. Snorkelling is also very good! The steps down to the beach, all 296 of them were fine going down, going up after a few drinks in the sweltering sun proved challenging, but if you take your time and take breaks it's ok. Keep in mind those fit beach bartenders lug food and drink up and down those stairs a couple of times a day! There is a beach bar with dining area and they serve a nice barbeque lunch usually chicken or fish with vegetable such as fried plantain and salad. There is also a change room, shower and washroom. If you plan on going down to the beach you can easily make a day of it, swimming, snorkelling, having drinks and lunch, or just reading on a lounge chair under a tree. Don't be surprised to see numerous goats on the hillside down to the beach, There are also chickens down near the beach bar (lunch?) and the beach mascot, a dog named "Lovely" - don't let his bark scare you, he's really quite friendly! We went to the Sierra Mar for orientation on our second day. There's a bus that travels too and from Sierra Mar a few times a day, it's about a 20 minute ride. We spent the day there. It had a nice big beach, paddle boats and a large buffet restaurant where we ate lunch. The food although very similar to what was served at the Los Galeones was in our opinion not as good. This is where we also exchanged our currency as the larger resort has a foreign currency exchange. It is a bigger and busier resort and we enjoyed the day we spent there, but we preferred the solace of our small hotel. The swimming pool at Los Galeones was clean and big enough to service the small hotel. It was never crowded and was a popular spot for most of the guests. The cafe and bar looked on to the pool, so you could dine next to the pool or inside the dining room. Bar drinks were usually quite good. Bar service could be slow to non-existant at times, but guests, especially the regulars would assist in getting and making cocktails or cervezas! I even self served a few times with no problem! The whirlpool area was a nice private area, also with a spectacular view. It was a good area for sunbathing or reading, the whirlpool, however, only had a couple of working jets. I don't think anyone used it at all. The grounds and gardens were lovely, and the hotel despite it's age and limited resources was clean and fairly well maintained. Regretfully, we did not take any of the local tours, nor did we take any excursions into Santiago de Cuba. We were going to arrange for a taxi to take us on a tour of the city on our second to last day at the hotel, however, three days before returning home, I lost the key to the room safe (where all our money and passports were located) at the beach. The staff took measures to help find it, by raking and searching the sand. It miracuously turned up the following day, found by another guest snorkelling! Had it not been for her, we would have had to arrange for a locksmith, which would have cost over $100. Her efforts as well as the staff's were greatly appreciated! This little fiasco prevented us from making the trip into the city as planned, but we'll be sure to go next time! Since this trip we have been to San Andres Island, Colombia (March 2007) and Playa de Panama, Costa Rica (Nov. 2007). We've always stayed at smaller hotels (under 100 rooms, and all have been 3 stars) and we've been very pleased with all of our choices thus far! We will likely be travelling to Cuba again this coming Feb. although this time will be near Trinidad, at the Costasur resort in a bungalow on the beach! In closing, we would highly recommend the Hotel Brisas Los Galeones to anyone seeking a relaxing getaway in a beautiful setting. We will definately return to this hotel in the future. The people of Cuba, although poor, have a great sense of self pride and are lovely, warm and inviting people. We always felt safe, even when walking through the village or countryside on our own. Bring items as gifts such as t-shirts, baseball caps, toiletries, toys and school supplies for the kids. They will be much appreciated!

        “Pleasant Place to Visit ”
We stayed at Los Galeones from December 7 - December 21, 2006. It was a very relaxing holiday. The scenery is spectacular. The staff is very accommodating. The rooms are basic but clean. Wooden ceilings add charm. All rooms have a great view. The resort was not busy while we were there. Each meal was served to us. A buffet was available at breakfast as well as food cooked fresh in the kitchen. One had the choice of eating inside or outside around the pool. The beach offered a lovely view and it was nice to sometimes have lunch at the beach bar. Swimming in the sea was not great due to the rocks in the water. Snorkelling was enjoyed by some. The pool was pleasant to swim in. Local musicians entertained most evenings at dinner. Some of them were very good. As a guest, one could walk down the steep driveway of the resort and enter the town of Chivirico. Locals were friendly and generally did not bother tourists for donations. The majority of the guests were repeat visitors to the resort. The road to the airport is very bumpy. Repeat guests said that the road is much worse than it used to be. Since we were the only two going to the airport at the end, we were provided with an air conditioned taxi. Sweet! We had researched this resort on the internet before going. The reviews that we read were very accurate and we are grateful to those who took the time to give us the information.

My boyfriend and I went to Sierra Mar May 4-12. It was such a fun trip and we met awesome people! Like many people have said before if you want to party and go somewhere where there are a lot of people, it may be best to go somewhere else. This place has beautiful scenery. It is extremely affordable (we are broke students) and the people are so friendly. We went on 3 excursions, the first was snorkelling which was awesome to see. The next was a scooter ride into town and it was a lot of fun also (got to see a primary school, a families farm, bat caves and then the last stop was at a red sand beach with waves to play in), then we went on the jeep safari. The safari was amazing. The beach at Sierra Mar wasn't the greatest but there was a pool to swim in to cool down so we didn't care! We definitely recommend going :)

spent a week at brisas sierra mar May 5-12, 2014 and had a great time, if your looking for a 5 star its not for you, we rated it at a 3 1/2 and well worth it for the money,Staff were very friendly especially the food staff and anthony the host at the resort great guy.food was great everyday and lots of it wish there was more choice of beers though, hotel room was ok it had a bed toilet shower ,it was cleaned every day and a place to spend our sleep time as we spent very little time in the room.great nightly entertainment but could of been on for longer, daily entertainment was good, excursions, we very reasonable and if you go the scooter excursion was well worth the 25 pasos, you see children at a primary school, a farmers way of life , you visit a cave full of fruit bats (way cool) and spend an afternoon at a red beach whith some big waves to jump ,great day.there is a restuarant at the entreance to the resort called the oceanana and its cheap and a fantasistic meal ,including shrimp ,lobster, chicken, all in all a great place to vacation and cheap, we are going to visit again ,so if you want a 5star hotel with thousands of people its not for you if you want a quite relaxing vaction we would recommend it for sure..................Thanks brisas sierra mar

        “Update Brisas Sierra Mar”
Visited Sierra Mar the week of March 23rd, an update only as small changes. Airport via Canjet there and back no issues. Customs moved fairly quickly, no questions even my husband passed through easily. Normal procedure.. wait for luggage, pass through final door, go to Bus, usual staff waiting with package, fill out registration on bus, keys to room and bracelet in envelope. Hour and ten minute ride to Hotel as road better, Bellhops waiting to take your luggage and rooms requested on 5th floor provided. Food ok, we never have any issues, room cleaned daily, fresh towels provided as needed. Staff great as usual, one elevator working. Ranchon may take awhile, hope it will be ready for the fall but at the pace they were working it may take longer. Beach still taking a hit from waves. Return home obtained room for late check out no problem. Already missing our other family and favourite resort.

        “Home away from home ”
This was my 6th visit to BSM, 41st visit to Cuba. This truly is a gem in regards to views, climate and location. Sandy certainly left her mark in this area but the recovery is proceeding rather well. The beach has nothing in common with Varadero or Playa Esmeralda so, if your primary reason for travel is to live on the beach, I'd recommend elsewhere. The Ranchón, "El Yarey", which was my favourite place to 'hang out' in the afternoons, is unfortunately still under repair. I suspect that it will be open in the late fall of 2014. This area is truly the best in Cuba for immersing yourself in the true culture of the island. The warmth and hospitality of the local community is second to none. Do venture off of the resort and explore. Visit Oceano's for lunch or dinner, Adolfo is a wonderful host. Also, as a previous reviewer mentioned, Vladimir has almost completed his own tropical paradise. Named BahiaTropicale, it is located about 2.5 Km east of the hotel. He offers a pristine private beach, Ranchon, wonderful gardens and 2 private rooms which are available for an off resort stay. He can also arrange transportation for you. Noel has 14 horses which is a wonderful way to see the immediate area including schools and the apiary just up the mountain a bit from the hotel. You can usually find him just outside the security gate to the hotel after 9am. Chivirico, the nearest town, is about 17 Km west and easily reachable by taxi or scooter. Well worth the trip for an afternoon visit or the popular Saturday night party in the central park.

“Don't forget your trip insurance... ”
My husband & I love staying at this resort. We have many Cuban friends and spend a lot of time visiting families, enjoying fiestas, and visiting this region. This trip we rented a motor scooter, for the week, and on the last rental day my husband was in the process of returning the scooter. He passed along the highway and came upon a vulture, eating the road kill, who rose up and flew directly at my husband. He applied the brakes, wheels locked and tumbled over the handlebars. Some Cubans came along and kept him comfortable until a shuttle bus from Los Galeones passed and took him to the nurse's station at Sierra Mar. She attended his many scraps and arranged for the ambulance to transport him to the hospital in Chivirico. We made it there, after a few stalled attempts (due to bad gas) and immediately had an x-ray and he was diagnosed with a fracture of his shoulder. He needed another ambulance to Santiago to consult with an orthopaedic surgeon. We waited for a newer ambulance, diesel, which would also transport two pregnant women, as they leave their homes and wait in Santiago to have their babies. We stopped along the way at another smaller clinic, but were not needed. After arriving in Santiago, and delivering the new mothers-to-be, we went to the International Clinic, where he was reassessed, and then transported to the main hospital in Santiago. Arriving there, we were immediately taken to the orthopaedic wing, assessed and consulted with two surgeons. An operation could have been performed right away, however we would've had to forgo our flight back home the next day. As he was capable of travelling, we returned to the International Clinic where he was fitted with a brace for his arm and a billing was calculated. We were short of $11CUC and the doctor gave us her own money (we gave her a $20 CDN.) to settle everything. Where would you find that type of service. She gave us a medical certificate so he could travel. Throughout the entire ordeal, the radiologist, the nurse, two drivers, and the orderly stayed with us, translated for us and consoled us. We arrived back at Sierra Mar, 12 hours later, feeling much better than when we first headed out. We have made our insurance claim in Canada (if he would have had the operation we would have started a claim right away in Santiago), and he is being looked after here. This accident could have been so much worse, both physically and financially, and there was no damage to the scooter or we would've had to pay for that as well. The "HERO" of this story is the little old ambulance that services all the little villages in and around the mountains of Guama province, and the dedicated professionals who take care of each and every patient. Thank you to the doctors, who have to hand write their reports in duplicate, because there is no printer; to Yamila, our nurse, who had to borrow our friend's phone to make arrangements; to Alexein, the radiologist, who loves his work and speaks flawless English: to Janeth, the driver, who keeps the "HERO" on the road; to Alexeis, the other driver, who can drive the roads of Santiago with his eyes closed (but doesn't); and Einar, our quiet orderly. A big big thanks to the staff of Sierra Mar, the nurse & the lifeguard, Sandra, Ramon, Vladimir (for the sandwiches and cold drinks, and just caring), Alfredo, Cathy, Betty, Noel, Adolpho, and the Hola Sun rep, Albert, who always has his day off interrupted. This caring from so many people is what makes us want to return to Cuba and Sierra Mar again and again.

        “A little gem ”
Just got back from my 12th trip to Cuba, the first at this hotel. It's small, clean, friendly, and surrounded by the mountains and the sea. The beach shows the devastation from the latest hurricane, but the water was warm with just some seaweed. The food was very mediocre , but plenty of it. It is a place perfect for older residents, being quiet and small, and that is perfect for those of us looking for somewhere to just relax and unwind without a lot of noisy youngsters. I would certainly go there again.

        “Paradise ”
This is our favorite Cuban destination. Beautifully located on the side of a hill overlooking the Caribbean with the Sierra Maestras as a backdrop. A newly repaved road, from Santiago, provides an hour + 10 min ride along the coastline with beautiful views. Although designated a 3+ star, the views, the landscape, the staff and the ambiance are 5+. We always find a good variety of food along with fresh vegetables + fruit. We have taken our own bikes there and spend many hours exploring this area with and without the company of Cuban friends. After a morning ride we retreat back to SM for a cold beer and enjoy music + lunch in the intimate setting of the ecological restaurant near the beach. A small Cuban bar on the way to Sevilla, is a fun stop for a cold drink and sometimes tapas. You will see a long wooden boardwalk, broken in the centre, leading to the bar, located beside a school. About halfway between SM & Chivirico, you pass Motel Guama. Ride up the hill, through a large parking lot and reward yourself with a cold beer and views to die for. Delicious full course lunches + dinners are available + you can rent a room with incredible views. Further along Route 20, there is an island (formerly Bacardi Island) named Caya Damas. Wave & shout and they will send over a paddle boat. Here is a treasure with great meals and a couple of rooms to rent and room to explore and relax. Also, we hear, there is some great snorkeling. After a bike ride to Chivirico, we always stop and enjoy a lunch at Vista del Sol, bottom of the hill below the hotel Los Galeones, and sit overlooking the water. Wilbur will serve up delicious food in a friendly relaxed atmosphere. And if you continue to ride between Chivirico to Uvero and beyond, the views will continue to captivate you. Back at SM, you can ride or walk or go on horses into the mountains and visit the villages higher up. As you continue higher you will cross the river and find waterfalls and fabulous views up and down the mountains. Another favorite restaurant is Oceano's near the entrance to SM. This year he built two rooms, each with a bathroom, to rent, if you want a change in setting from the AI. Other reviews show pics of this place. A GEM in the making This year, Vladimar Morino, has almost completed an upstairs addition to his home. There are two bedrooms, each with a bathroom, separate sitting room + a terrace to savor your morning coffee. Also, he built a Ranchon, that you can rent, and enjoy a fiesta and celebrate with friends, He will supply everything for a single price. And a treat for us, his property backs onto the ocean with a beautiful private beach. The vegetable garden is abundant and a walk through the gardens around his home is absolutely beautiful. He will also supply transportation to his home. Quite a wonderful Cuban experience. Call him, cell #53685224. There is so much in this area to enjoy and we have made many friends and memories. The staff of Sierra Mar afforded us opportunities to explore, meet their families. We feel completely safe off resort and encourage people to walk through the village, Bahia Largo, and beyond.

        “Great Return Visit ”
This was our 2nd time to the Brisas Sierra Mar and while the weather wasn?t the greatest (rain the 2nd day and overcast for much of the first week) it was still a good 14 days. The food, service and general ambience of the resort makes this a nice resort to visit. For context we are retired empty nesters in our late 50?s enjoying many trips to Cuba, all various AI?s. One thing you need to be aware of is there are a lot of stairs which can be challenging if you have mobility issues. There are elevators though. The one on the Caribbean side has been repaired however the one close to the entertainment stage was under repair and I understand the elevator for the upper levels (into the hill) was also out of commission while we were there. if you like to snorkel, there is a reef not that far out with a nice variety of fish. However the water was never still so visibility varied daily. This resort has a dark sand beach with a lot of rocks and coral in the water close to the shore. I would still recommend beach shoes but I didn?t find it quite as rocky as last year. While we were there a lot of sand was being brought in and they were working on improving the beach area which was good, however there was some talk of closing off the main beach area while they worked. Understandable due to the heavy machinery but? The rooms are dated but clean and any issues that did arise were dealt with promptly. I would recommend something on the 400 level; however these are quickly taken up by returning guests of which there are many. We ended up on the second level so maybe we need to return a few more times to make it up to the 4th. The Ecological restaurant this year had live music which we really enjoyed. The beach restaurant ?the Ranchon? was closed (at it was last year while we were there) as it was under reconstruction, to be completed by March. The Cuban a la cart was great this year but the International a la cart (?the Mariposa?) was disappointing as the squid rings we ordered turned out to be those small squids which we did not enjoy. So we finished our supper at the buffet which usually served a nice variety of food. We also went off resort once to ?The Oceana? restaurant and enjoyed a great lobster dinner at a very reasonable price. This year there was more local entertainment in the main lobby, at the two a la carts and at the pool bar. All were a joy to listen to. The evening shows varied, from audience participation, dance, water ballet, or local bands. On another note, I don?t think the resort sprayed much while we were there so remember to bring your mosquitoes spray, you?ll probably need it. There are 3 bars at this resort and what impressed us was they never ran out of mint. You could also get a mojito or a properly blended Pina Colada at the beach bar. There used to be a bar above the pool which was a great place to enjoy the sunset however it was closed as the roof was under repair. We missed it as it was also a nice quiet place to get away to. The staff really made you feel welcome, as did a lot of the regulars. It has a nice relaxed atmosphere that grows on you. Most people there were around our age so I wouldn?t call this a party place. Not many kids either, but there was a ?Kids Club? so maybe it?s more active at other times. If you look up my channel on YouTube (MrJarArt) I?ve posted a few videos of this resort and some of the tours we?ve taken while in Santiago de Cuba as well as other Cuban resorts we?ve been to.

“Second time going, Economic and Friendly”
For those coming back a second time, as you may have now summarized... the road is fixed! With the new road its about an hour and 15 minutes from the airport to the hotel. My Husband and I came back to the resort for a second time mainly for the scuba diving (which is affordable and has great reefs). Everyone at the resort is friendly, although you do get what you pay for in terms of amenities and over all convenience. This resort isn't for anyone who wants to be pampered or looking for fine dining. The resort also attracts an older crowd (My Husband and I were the youngest at the resort by a fair bit being in our late 20s). We are planning to go again next year as we enjoy the "smallness" of the resort, enabling you to meet other people throughout your stay and form new friendships. The one main complaint I have is the sheer number of workers who ask you directly for tips. While I am happy to tip based on performance of a service, being asked over and over and over again was irritating. Bottom line, this resort is definitely for "repeaters" who know what to expect. (when we were there 80% of the resort had been before). They have a nice dinner if you are a repeater too!

“Sierra Mar: The Road is Fixed- really! and many more improvements ”
Braisas Sierra MarHotel Nestled between the Sierra Madre Mountains and the Caribbean Sea New Flash: The road is fixed, really!! We?ve been going to Sierra Mar for New Year?s for about 10 years now. At this end of Cuba, you have guaranteed warm weather. In December and January you can be sure of 30 - 33 degree Celsius every day. Evenings are comfortable in shorts and T-shirts. Over the past few years, quality seemed to decline a little bit each year, BUT this year we?re delighted to report a lot of improvements. First of all, the main road from the airport to the hotel has been completely redone. Consequently the travel time has been cut from nearly 2 hours to about 55 minutes. You no longer need Gravol before boarding the transfer bus. That is also great for those travelers who want to take one of the various cultural excursions to the city of Santiago during their stay. Sierra Mar?s new director is getting big things and small things done around the hotel. The two main elevators have been replaced with brand new high quality German elevators. The secondary elevators are in the process of being replaced. There are several generators in place to take over when the municipal electrical supply falters. The beach, which was damaged by Hurricane Sandy, is being restored with truck-loads of sand. Plenty of brand new beach and pool chairs were being set out while we were there. All the things that we have always loved about Sierra Mar are still going strong. The entertainments every evening are well done. There is also live music at the pool bar many afternoons and more live music in the lobby bar at approximately 6 pm. The staff are all very friendly and will engage in conversation if you want to learn about Cuban living. The village of Bahia Larga is a short walk from the end of the hotel driveway so you can go for an interesting walk and see the church, the schools and stop to visit local families along the way. Chances are that you will be invited into someone?s home for a cup of coffee or juice. If you take gifts to give away on your walks, don?t be surprised if a day or so later the recipient will find you and give you a bag of guavas or coffee or honey. The people in this area are really friendly and hard -working. For a longer excursion, you can take a hotel bicycle and ride to the town of Chiverico. Most Saturday nights, there seem to be a fiesta in the town square. Take a cab, rather than a bike for that activity as the roads are dark at night. Often you can share a cab with other guests to get to the fiesta. The hotel has several a la carte restaurants which are included in your package. The trick is that you have to book reservations. To do this, go to the lobby at 11:00 am and ask for Sandra. You can book 2 dinners per week. If you have already been to this hotel once before and this review prompts you to go again, you will be considered a ?repeater? by the hotel. Repeaters get a special dinner party with wonderful live Cuban music and dance demonstrations. The dive shop has had a number of improvements. The boats and compressor are functioning well and they have all brand new buoyancy compensators and regulators. The dive cost includes use of their equipment, so if you prefer to travel light you could arrive with nothing more than your Certification card and your logbook. The water temperature at 25 meters depth was 28 degrees Celsius consistently. I was more than warm enough in a shorty suit after an hour in the water. So Sierra Mar is the place to go for sun, sand, warm weather and a warm welcome

Hurricane Sandy has done in the beach again but it is still nice on the lounge chairs listening to the surf under the Palms. The food at the Buffet is still pretty good. I usually eat salads and fish and eggs for breakfast, so I am OK. There is a small Restaurant just opened at the the front of the Resort. One of the waiters lives there and opened it. Lobster dinner with soup, salad etc. for $12. Chicken $4. Bottle of Spanish wine $6. It was pretty good. Canjet screwed up getting us there. They left 1/2 the luggage in Toronto. # hours waiting in the bus while people filled out claims. This isn't the resorts fault. There where a couple old guys with young Cuban girlfriend there. The one old German guy was very annoying, strutting, look what I have. I was going to smack him but my wife wouldn't let me. She was right, he wasn't even a man. It was 5 years ago when we last visited this resort and we will go back. The weather is guaranteed hot, not like the north. We where there Jan.12 till 20th

“A good time from Christmas till New Year ”
Resort It is 1 hour and 15 minutes drive from the airport with beautiful scenery: mountains on one side and sea coast on the other site. Weather was perfect with air temperature above 30 degrees C and water 29 degrees. Resort was clean, safe with gorgeous setting secluded by sea and Sierra Maestra Mountains, beautiful vegetation. Two elevators served us efficiently. Entertainment In general I'm not a big fan of resorts shows, but I was happy with the New Year's Eve gala and a ballet on the water performance. Room 326: clean, beds comfortable, mini fridge, AC worked well, small flat TV (CTV channel - convenient if you need check weather before returning home), balcony with stunning ocean view (including sunsets), bathroom: working hairdryer, water warm in mornings hot in the evenings, basket filled with soaps, shampoo, hair conditioner and shower caps. Drinking water is served in thermos flasks, so if you do not want to buy bottled water for your excursions be prepared to have your own water container. Food Lobby bar is open 24 hours, serving fantastic Spanish coffee and with evening life music. Breakfasts (fresh squeezed juice available but without proper electric juicer it was longer process), lunches and suppers (wine served) with sufficient selection of dishes including veggies (as usual in Cuba no stomach problems). If you want to prevent stomach problems in hot climate don?t overdo with drinking and eating;). This simple rule is working every time for us. Two a la carte restaurants - no problem with reservation. Beach Hmmm, I thought I was prepared that sand will be rather dark. That was my price for planned visit to Santiago de Cuba. Still, for me was a big disappointment, nothing close to Caribbean Sea, more like Wasaga Beach these days. They are restoring beach area after hurricane Sandy with sand looking a lot like triple mix. When waves were mixing that ?sand? sea was murky and unpleasant. Beyond resort area there is long shore for a walk with better sea conditions and great waves, . There was plenty of beach chairs but many of them cracked but still usable. Pedal boats and kayaks were also available without problems. Beach bar had a nice selection of drinks. At the back there is a ?hidden? garden with little grill bar surrounded by lush vegetation. This is a great spot for bird watching and a moment of seclusion. Pool Pool is small but with pool bar. There was a shortage of beach towels, but we always take ours to avoid those little inconveniences. Insects As everywhere in Caribbean, invisible sand flies were burdensome but mosquitos? population were kept under control (smell of spraying during evenings) Summarizing The service was great with friendly and welcoming staff. Resort is a beautifully located, surrounded by nature with many activates available: biking, hiking, horse riding, swimming (coral reefs are close by), bird watching, excursions (e.g. 1 or ½ day to Santiago) and more?

        “Christmas in Cuba ”
I travelled from snowy Toronto to 7 days of blue sky and 30 degrees of sunshine to this wonderfully friendly all inclusive resort, with my 13, 25, and 26 year old children. The staff are super nice, the pool is popular with the swim up bar and snack bar, and the older kids socialized in the open air lobby bar all night. There is a buffet available daily, but don't miss the café ecologica literally hiding back in the pretty garden area behind the beach (lunch only). Didn't get to the other two restaurants as I was content enough with the food not to bother making the necessary reservations. The beach is certainly not as bad as other reviewers have said - sure they are still recovering from hurricane Sandy, but it is quiet, some shade, and quaint. Bar there too. However, if you walk or horseback a little further down, the beach becomes a private paradise for a picnic and swim. If you pass Alexander, do go for his bbq fresh lobster - a real deal and treat at his tiny setup! A visit to Santiago is interesting, and you can snorkel around some shipwrecks on the way if you book the catamaran. Overall, a relaxing, no stress and memorable trip. You will hear lots of French, Russian, German, and the Cubans love it if you try Spanish as much as they try (and succeed) with English. Tourists should make some effort to clean up after themselves but the staff does a great job.

        “Sierra Mar ”
Dec 2013: Place was clean, easy going, not a party central but the live music at the main lobby and pool bar atmosphere made for great afternoons/evenings. Staff is eager to accommodate your needs. I suppose it all depends on how demanding you are, what your needs and expectations are. With a little insect repellent I got away with very few bites although the no-see-ems are indeed annoying. Kudos to Kenia, whose hard work and knowledge of guides/resources made my vacation worth it. The Catamaran to Santiago was awesome, moped tour to nearby red sand beach/bat cave/school and farmer's house memorable. (No better coffee than La China?s). Cultural tour of Santiago was good too but for me the best was going through Uvero to The Pico Turquino entrance of the Sierra. The views are unforgettable. So I spent most of my morning/afternoons touring, getting to know the region (not first time in Cuba but first in south Guama). Many were returning families to Brisas Sierra Mar for over 10 years and a good part of the resort staff had been there all along. The food is average but there was not a meal where I didn?t have at least two choices of something I liked and it was nicely done, soups and desserts awesome. The locals were very welcoming and often with hot coffee fruits and a great smile to offer. See Alfredo at the beach for a horse rental/tour, he will show you Playa Blanca and the waterfall right off Sierra Maestra. I expected to pay for the safe in the room and never needed the Internet, so I cant quite speak of its speed. Overall my experience was good. I've been to livelier and bigger resorts in Cuba but this is definitely a place I'd go back to, in fact might do so again this winter. Never visited the local restaurants although I heard most people's great reviews of them. Santiago area is definitely something to see and Brisas Sierra Mar a good place to stay at. P.S: They finished paving the road to Chivirico the week I was there, road work was expected to go past Uvero.

“Dec 2013 - Like coming home. + new restaurant Oceana ”
Been going 10 years and as noted by others, some improvements: 1. road 2. new elevators, some adjustments needed but worked most of the time. 3. working on the new pool bar roof - shingles, not palm leaves this time. 4. working on new roof structure on ranchon down below. 5. yes beach is alot smaller, washed out. 6. new beach bar 7. some rooms have bar fridges. 8. repeaters dinner delicious as always. No lobster this year so go to the Oceana restaurant and get 4-5 lobster tail dinner for 12 cuc....delicious. 9. safe rental 2.00 cuc/day 10. if you are worried about towel thieves as the previous reviewer noted, it is probably another tourist taking your towel so they don't have to pay the 25 cuc before they leave - solution, bring your own easily identifiable towel. Some of our fav staff are still there while others have left. Hola to Mercedes at reception, Carlos at front desk/bell boy, Anthony in entertainment (most of the entertainers were mia other than the ~11am, 3pm little poolside dance, and then show up for the night show. Music and routines were new but seemed repetitive 3 nights. Magician was great. This resort tends to be alot of repeaters, older folks although there were some younger ones so maybe the night show/disco isn't as important...I don't really think of this place as a hot spot. Internet seems to still be dialup and SLOW. 6 cuc for 1 hour but it took 20 minutes to try to log in to emails. Some of the Windows XP setting prevented even accessing our internet accounts. Even though we are repeaters who previously knew how to reserve ala carts, we found this one aspect disorganized. Front desk told us to see Sandra (who wasn't there some days), Sandra told us to see Vladamir, who directed us to back to Sandra. Fortunately with it being slow Vlad was looking for guests to fill the ala cart the one night so we got in no problem. Similar difficulties trying to reserve massage and pedicure services...took 6 days before we got in. If you aren't patient something like this will drive you nuts. :) Moped tour to the bat cave, fruit farm, local school, doctor/dentists was nice. City tour was same but the city centre is under 'renovation'. (the big church was open while under reconstruction, whereas in the past it was closed). One REALLY nice addition as mentioned by others, was the Oceana restaurant just at the entrance to the Brisas Sierra Mar. We visited for lunch. Menu is the same for dinner. 12 cuc for the lobster dinner was fantastic..4-5 lobster tails on your plate. Photos attached. Adolpho has one casa ready but is still awaiting permits, 2nd under construction.

I just came back from the Brisas and the road is almost completed to the hotel. Only 4km to go. It took 1:15hrs from the airport compared to 1:50hrs last year. Food is good and hot. Beach is getting smaller and smaller every year and a lot of mosquitos. The hotel does not seem to spray anymore!!!! I saw only once........... The worst is the animation. The shows and the aquatic show are very nice but the animations guys are very bad. The worst I ever saw in Cuba. The don't do nothing except to hide...... Volleyball in the pool, well no ball or one flat. No dance class, 2 bingos in two weeks and he was telling the numbers so fast that nobody understood nothing. Just want to get over it. Need young animation with interest, they are too old. Kids babysitting, don't leave your kids with her, she is more interested to talk to client to get stuff then taking care of your kids. “fantastic holiday, excellent return for money spent ”
first trip here, but will not be the last, excellent staff &service, most staff well conversed in english.you can now change you currency at the front desk, instead of waiting for the bank in town to open.the views from atop from the hotel are simply wonderful, not to forget the chance for terrific photos of the sunsets.the food was the best we had in cuba to date.please note it states ala carte but due to the fact that this has been the busiest season for this resort in their history we had buffet some nites and when a contingent of 15 folks or more departed for home they did return to a ala carte. this proves that this resort 's secret is getting out.in fact we tried booking for 2 wks but were only available to get one week. also we had a couple of regulars whom suggested &had been coming to this resort for yrs state quite openly i should not post any reviews,to me this seemed quite selfish and i believe in sharing informative information. their are a couple of drawbacks but yuo can work around them. the 300 steps down and again back up were a challenge for me but if you take your time they are certainly doable also the hill up to resort easy for us to walk down but up that was easily solved by stopping into the resturaunt VISTA DEL SOL at the bottom of the hill the man whom owns it is WILBUR and he will call a cab to take you up the hill cost of cab 2 cuc;s also WILBUR has the best lobster we have ever had in our trips to cuba 10 cucs 8 of us dined twice their during our stay. he speaks perfect english and siitting on the patio with the ocean lapping beside you while enjoying excellent food with new found companions is hard to beat.if you want to get off the resort for a 1/2 day grab a coocha and go down the road to isla de damas {bacardi;s summer island ,enjoy snorkeling or just swimming and then take lunch their.they pick you up and return you by padel boat, one just needs to wave or shout&you will be picked up. also in regards to the road it is almost completed from santiago and is about 4 kms from los galeones ,and were still working on it as we left on wed jan 22/14 eddy at the front dek will help you with any questions or wants and advice if needed, and is always done with a grat attitude.the resort does need some TLC and suffered some damage from the hurricane last yr&was used as a rehab center for drug addicts &that is why the hotel was not opened last season.the town at the bottom of the hill is also a good place to wander &not once felt concerned.another ting worth mentioning is that their is a nordic spa behind the game room &folks did not seem to know about it or if it was working but it is certainly working now and when you are finished you can walk the few steps to the hot tub.also their is a hot spring &mineral bath were you can get a mud bath &massage etc for a very reasonable price.it is about 18 kms from the hotel and is called aguas caliente

Room Tip: all rooms have views of ocean and or the town or a combination of both blocks 100 ,200&300 more...

        “Wonderful Staff, Breathtaking View. ”
WOW. this was my 3rd trip to cuba but first to this area, I have been in Varadero and havana before. I wasn't expecting much but I was surprised. It was a long bus ride from the santiago airport. ( 2 hours) But we got couple of beers from the airport 1.5 CUC each and changed some money at the airport and head towards the resort. Road gets a bit rough but I have been in worst roads before so It wasn't a big deal. There was tons of crabs on the road. We didn't see much of the wonderful view because it was night but if you travel during day time the view is the best ever. When we arrived Jose in front desk helped us with our room.. we were at room 306 and the view from the balcony was absolutely breathtaking. The resort is small so staff get to know you and they eventually call you by name. No Buffet only A la Catrta. and food was amazing. we had live music every night. we didn't use the beach much we were out exploring the town and the mountains but there is a small beach with a bar and BBQ till about 4 pm. it has about 290 stairs down to beach which is awesome and sort of a tiny workout for lazy people. water is good, lots of corals around so bring your snorkeling equipment. Also don't forget your water shoes. you'll need it. there is a small pool up in the resort if you want to avoid the stairs. I had bug spray with me and you will need it. You can arrange a shuttle with front desk and visit the sister resort for a day which is a much bigger resort. Although I much prefer los Galeones. It's 16+ so you wont have the kids running around. they will change your canadian money to CUC at the resort or there is a bank in town. In the village you will need Cuban Peso since they don't really have much tourist but they will take your CUC which means you just paid double or triple in some case. there is a bus terminal in the city which you can go to santiago for 5 cuban peso but you will be in back of a camion. or can arrange a ride with Ed or jose in front desk. which will be probably around 80 CUC more or less. I took towel and toilet paper and shampoo and soap but It was all provided. they have 110V in the rooms and 110 /220 V elsewhere but if your plugs have one fat side then you can't plug it you'll need to buy a plug from Canada. Me and my partner wanted to climb the Pico Turquino ( highest mountain in cuba) and Jose helped up with arranging ride and pick up also staff made us sandwiches and packed up tons of fruits and juice.. they were absolutely wonderful.. If you are in shape you should climb as well. you'll need popper hiking boots and backpack.. I LOVED this place and I will definitely go back to the exact same resort.

        “Perfect Stress Eliminator.”
I had a frenetic fall and early winter and I knew what I wanted to do. "I just want to go somewhere that can I lie on the water and watch the pretty fish go by." , I kept saying. This was the place. Yes the road was terrible, but the views are outstanding. Yes, there are lots of steps between the beach and the resort. As an out of shape 50 year old, the stairs took about 3-4 minutes. It was good for me. The place is really quiet. There is lovely live music every day. The food is authentic and tasty - nothing outstanding. There were 2 kinds of beer: a light and a dark, decent wine and mostly rum based drinks. The staff is warm, friendly and fantastic. Peace and quiet with good snorkelling. Just what we needed.

        “A Very Special Place ”
I wanted somewhere to relax and this place was perfect. It's a small hotel surrounded by the ocean on two sides and a lagoon on the other. Access from the village of Chivirico is by a very steep winding road. The hotel is perched on a high hill with incredible views from most rooms. The beach is pretty and secluded but beware the 273 steps - by my count anyway- to get there. Local goats are abundant and occasionally drink from the hotel pool. The village of Chivirico doesn't have much to offer the tourist as far as souvenirs but more than makes up for it in local character. It's a working farm village. If you'd like a glimpse of the real Cuba you won't go too far wrong here. As for the hotel it's an intimate place. The service is incredible considering how short-staffed they are most of the time. It wasn't unusual for the nurse to serve the odd drink. No buffets to gorge yourself on here. It's all a la carte and very tastey. Most people when I was there dined outside by the pool. Local musicians come in to play for the guests every night and the quality of the musicianship was phenomenal. No blaring music during the day. No 'animacion' people. No bingo by the pool. No 'show'. Just a friendly little hotel in the middle of nowhere with the friendliest staff I've ever seen. The lunch time BBQs on the beach were great. The road to the hotel from the airport was a mess. Probably one of the worst I've ever travelled on anywhere. It took well over 2 hours of shake, rattle and roll to get to the hotel but was well worth it. This place isn't for everyone. If you want great nightlife and you don't like the hike to the town or the beach go somewhere else.

        “Los Galeones was great!! ”
Our first visit was in Nov 08 & we will definitely be enjoying a return trip. This is a beautiful area and a perfect getaway for those who appreciate an adventure and something other than the oversized, overindulgent resorts that seem to be the norm. We found the staff to be very friendly and always willing to help. Chivirrico is a wonderful little town, very friendly folks....warm and happy to talk and show you around. The beach is very private & beautiful, and the walk down and back up again is not a bother at all. We actually made the beach/town walk up to 4 times a day!! We are very low maintenance travellers and don't expect perfection.....as long as the facility is clean and the staff is friendly and accomodating, we're happy! Meals are also not a priority for us, so we don't really miss a buffet where we are more apt to overindulge......haven't found a hotel in Cuba with 'stellar' food at any time. The food was quite good for a small facility, and the wait staff was excellent. We also ate with the locals in town and absobed some of the local culture. After an evening visit to Sierra Mar, we were happy to return to Los Galeones and much prefer it to the larger resort. This hotel and the area are a definite two thumbs up from us, can't wait to return!! We also took the full day bus trip into Santiago......gave us an idea of where to go for the next trip.....although next time we will be renting a car. Don't like the fact that at each stop the locals mob the tour bus and are quite annoying. You don't find any of this in Chivirrico, the locals never ask for anything at any time and it's much easier to blend in. This area of Cuba is very beautiful and the poor road conditions only add to the total adventure. Truly a photographers paradise. Not everyones 'cup of tea' which makes it great......not going to ever be overcrowded. Enjoy!!

“Only for people who will appreciate ”
My wife and i have just returned from this amazing hotel, actually sanctuary would be a better word to describe this place and i debated weather i should write a review in order to keep this gem as secret as possible but i'm not that selfish and just hope to be able to return for years to come. It is difficult to explain my experience at the los galeones but this was our 26th trip and we have found what we were looking for, if you are not a sociable person or if you expect 5 **** amenities and are not willing to use or learn basic Spanish ($4 at wallmart) please do not go to this resort and [-] on every-one's parade but if you are saddle up and ride. Even though this is a small resort you have many options, if you are fit and adventurous you are minutes from amazing trails in the sierra mountains and minutes from people who have never seen tourists before, you can get a local guide from the town of Chivirico or just get a few beers and sit in the center of town and mingle with the locals (my personal favorite) but if all you need is 100% peace and quiet just head down to the beach and enjoy the breeze and yuamar and illian will take care of you, no worries People often mention older guests at this hotel and it's true THANK GOD i have met enough drunken idiots to last a life time and this time was able to enjoy amazing conversations with some fantastic people and have returned a much better person because of this, thanks to all of you for this wonderful experience, your send-off is engraved in my memory for ever. If you plan to visit this resort and wish to bring things for the people i know that yomar at the beach bar likes to speak english so an english/spanish dictionary would be nice, Illian the lifeguard really needs running shoes (white sneakers size 42) Josée at the reception would love a soccer ball and "lovy" the resort dog and mascot could use ear drops for mites, the rest of the people say that toiletries are the most expensive and difficult to get so tooth paste, tooth brush, soap, and things of this kind will be appreciated, if you have a thrift store in your area buy some t-shirts and shorts of all sizes and you will find some one who will need them ENJOY CUBA

        “Twice the Charm”
We have recently returned from a week long (27 March 3 April) and our second stay at Los Galeones, and it was great. We enjoy the atmosphere of the small hotel. The staff works hard and they make the very best of everything that they do and don't have. For us the steps (approximately 300) to the beach are not an issue, nor is the hill to town. The weather during the day was terrific and each afternoon provided some much needed rain and pretty intense thunder and lightening. There was only one power outage and it was for only a short period of time, so a small flashlight is a handy item to have with you. The food although not spectacular, was plentiful and always well presented. Nothing like the fresh fish at the beach bar for lunch on a regular basis. The nightly live entertainment was excellent as always. It was a relaxing, enjoyable, and quiet week to get away from it all. If that's what you're looking for then this is the place for you. We will definitely be going back!

        “Great Way to Unwind ”
I just returned from Los Galeones. I went by myself for my first trip to Cuba. I will preface my thoughts/observations below by saying the whole vacation was beyond excellent and I definitely appreciated the whole experience. Los Galeones is probably best for those who don't want to go to "Factory" resorts of 200+ rooms, organized activities, and buffet line ups. Los Galeones only has 32 rooms and is adults only. The staff are absolutely wonderful! They are so friendly. As well, I really enjoyed meeting all the guests and even though I was traveling by myself I was made to feel at home and made new friends. The view offered from Los Galeones is unbelievable since it is on the hill. Los Galeones is located about 2 hours from Santiago de Cuba Airport. The main road leading to the resort is interesting at best. There are many potholes and some sections of the road were water-logged. I would suggest taking a bus/taxi to get around because when I was there, a couple of rental cars belonging to some guests were damaged pretty good. Los Galeones is affiliated with Brisas SierraMar, where you can go there to eat, drink and use their amenities. It is about 20 minutes in between the resorts and will cost about 5 CUCs (Cuban Convertible Pesos) each way including tip. I went to SierraMar originally for the day, but after staying at Los Galeones I found it so impersonal there and couldn't wait to get back. There are about 200 rooms at SierraMar and some access to recreational equipment/trips, but they are in short supply and may not be available. There is one restaurant and one bar up at the resort. The atmosphere is so casual that people can go behind the bar and make themselves a drink. The bar is open until 1 AM. There is a wide array of liquors. There is beer and wine. I did not like the juice, it was not the same type here. The water is very safe and clean to drink. Don't expect fancy food - however, that being said, their a-la-carte menus offer quite a few options and the food in my opinion tastes pretty good. Breakfast is part buffet and you can order eggs & bacon from the kitchen. Lunch and Dinner are a-la-carte. Breakfast runs from 7:30 - 10 AM, Lunch runs from 12:30 - 2 PM, Dinner runs from 7 - 9:30 PM. There is live music every day at dinner. Most nights we passed the hat around and threw in a peso or two. After dinner, a lot of us gathered outside the bar for the rest of the night. The rooms are pretty basic. I stayed in the 100 block of Rooms, which offered out my front door a view of the town of Chivirico at the bottom of the hill of the resort and a view of the entrance and Caribbean Sea out my back door. However, it's the set of rooms located farthest away from the main area. The 200 block of rooms offer the best view of the Caribbean Sea. The 300 block of rooms offer a great view of the sunset and mountains and are closest to the main area. The 400 and 500 blocks of rooms are directly fronting the main area but face Chivirico and the Mountains - very little water to see. I had a TV in my room which received local TV, Showcase, CTV, CNN, and TNT. A few people said they had a refrigerator, but I did not. I had two twin beds pushed together. There was an air conditioner in the room, but it can be a bit nosey. The beds were a bit on the firm side and the pillows were really firm so if you need a soft pillow, I would suggest bringing one. I could not open the balcony glass door because there was no screen door. Someone I met said she brings down some netting and affixes it to the door so she can have the door open. I received quite a few mosquito bites while outside and there are small creatures like crabs, lizards, etc. that pass by outside the room so I kept the doors closed. I had a desk in my room with a little dinette table. A great feature in te room is a small safe. I felt great knowing that I can put the 25 CUCs for the departure tax, passport, etc. in a safe place while I was at the hotel. There were a couple of small lamps and one oddly placed overhead fluorescent in the corner. In the bathroom in my room, I had a small hairdryer with a couple of overhead lights. The water pressure in my room was a little weak and it took a few minutes for the hot water to kick in. I would recommend bringing a couple of flash lights as the power was knocked out a few times, not an uncommon occurrence. As well, I brought some small things for the cleaning staff as well as some small pesos for tips at the end of the vacation. There is a private beach for the resort, however it is 296 steps down and is quite a walk. Be careful coming back up, pace yourself. There is a beach side bar that runs from 10 AM to 4 PM and they may have lunch if there are enough people down there. The sand is very dark. In the water, there is quite a bit of rocks/coral/sea weed, so I would suggest bringing water shoes. Also, I went to town and walked down the road from the top of the resort. This is a very steep walk down and again, pace yourself coming back up. It probably takes about 20 minutes to walk each way. For every week you are there, you can received a complimentary massage. I found that very helpful at the end of my vacation as I pulled a muscle coming up the hill. In the town there is a small art gallery, a few basic stores in and around the square. There is a bank to exchange money. You can also exchange at the airport and also with the Front Desk. Someone told me the resort offers a slightly better exchange rate than the Airport. So those are pretty much my thoughts/observations on Los Galeones. Again, if you want a place where you can go at your own pace, want to purely relax, to not have the hustle of big resorts, then this may be the place for you.

“I left my heart at Brisas Los Galeones ”
Just came back yesterday, December 25th, from this wonderful peaceful place. If you are looking for a place to make time stand still and be left alone to rest and relax this is the place for you. It is not like your typical resort, which are adult daycare centers really. No, this place is quaint and small where you come to have adult mature fun: sleep, read, eat, drink moderately, swim, soak of the sun, sit in the shade, watch a sunset, read, listen to live music at dinner, snorkle, walk through a typical village down below, sit on you balcony/patio, watch a little television, look at the goats iguanas and salamanders, talk to the friendly staff, practice your spanish, etc. The beach is down a hill so you must be fit enough to walk many stairs, but if you are not there is a pool and whirlpool uptop. At the beach there is a bar and you can have a good barbecue lunch. Also, the beach is half sand and half trees so you can sit in the natural shade or the sun, and if you have a hammock don't forget it as you can tie it on the trees near the water. The best vacation I have ever had. Mostly couples but singles are also not made to feel out of place. Just perfect.

        “Loved every minute”
We stayed at Los Galeones for a week at the end of November and loved every minute of it. The staff absolutely makes the place together with the scenery, the whole atmosphere. It is not for everybody however - if you want flashy nightlife, organized activities, and don't like goats, chickens or iguana on your balcony, or cannot stand imperfections in your room - don't go. The resort is super clean, the food was pretty good (and from other cuban resort reviews I have read, could probably be considered superior)- the village down the hill is friendly, felt safe, and you can take in a baseball game or Sat, night fiesta. There are 300 steps down to the beach but it is good excercise-not a swimming beach but snokeling. When we were there the road between Santiago and the resort was in poor shape -hour and half ride but interesting in itself. The sister resort does have a few more things to do if you want to -like horseback riding to a waterfall. I can't say enough good things about this place, but again be forewarned- do your research as I do not imagine it is for everyone - for us was paradise and met many great people there-other guests and staff. Plan to go back again and again.

        “Loved It!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ”
If you want to get away from the large American Hotels. This is the place for you. Clean, and very friendly. The food in Cuba in general is nothing to write home about. But at Galeones they will make you anything you want. Just go to the bar and ask Dora or Gladeys and they will make anything from bacon and eggs to plain toast. If you want mashed potatoes the cook Alec will make it for you. They are there to please you and they do!!!!!!!!!!!. Don't be surprised if they run out of things. It is difficult to get the supplies to the Hotel sometimes. Don't be upset if the water stops running. Your on Cuban time and they will fix it ,until then they will do anything to accomidate you, Just ask. When the Generator comes on it is a little noisey. But the hotel is on a mountain and sometimes things happen. When you stay at this hotel you will feel like you are right in the heart of Cuba. The town of Chivirico is at the bottom of the driveway. Don't miss the opportunity to wander about and FIESTA with the locals. TOTALLY SAFE!!!!!!!! This visit to Cuba was my most favorite thus far and I contribute that to the people of Chivirico and the staff at Brisas Los Galeones

        “A Quiet Treasure ”
This was my 6th visit to this incredible small lodge resort. I invited 6 other friends and family along, all cannot wait to visit next year. This quiet unique resort is my favourite place to unwind from a busy city life. It is all about the people, the staff make you feel like family, and truly welcome. The rooms are super clean, and have an incredible view, great for quiet reading and solitude. The food is very good, and enough variety to keep all happy. The natural beach has some great snokeling, in the shallow waters. No line ups, no loud noise, friendly patrons, that keep coming back. Lots of choice, can socialize in the small village, watch local baseball, make friends. When you want some action, enjoy the previlages at the sister resort Serra Mar, check out the Eco restaurant, evening show, and disco. When other tour guides say this is their favourite resort... it says it all. Cannot recommend this place more.....

Tired of the huge resorts, bored staff and long buffet lines? We were and we just got back from the best resort we've been to. It only has 32 rooms, and from the first day we were part of the place. Most everyone we met were repeaters, some coming every year since the mid 90's. The food was mainly a la carte and was very good - the presentation was first rate. The whole place is very laid back and friendly, we felt like we were at someone's cottage. The beach is great for snorkling and every day the guys working at the bar do a great bbq for the guests. Do be aware though, to get to the beach there are over 200 steps down. The climb back up is a challenge but we'd definitely go again.

        “Wolleyball!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
My wife and I visited the Sierra Mar in March 2008. Very nice resort, but showing it's age. The beach wasn't great, so we spent a lot of time at the pool. Met some new friends, had a great time playing volleyball in the pool almost every day. Wonderful sunsets from our 2nd floor balcony overlooking the ocean. There was a scary elevator in our building, we never had any problems with it, but we knew of several people who got stranded in it. Buffet food was good.... nice fresh breads and buns every day. There was also a very nice Ecological ala carte restaurant tucked in the jungle at the rear of the resort. Late every afternoon an old plane would fly over and dust the restaurant area down with insecticide to keep the bugs at bay. We're still looking for our "ideal" resort, but this is the closest we've gotten to finding one I'd like to visit again.

I have been to this resort quite a few times and it just doesn't matter if it's low season or high or even in between seasons the greetings from the lovely staff is always the same..fantastic! The food is always just so delicous even during the lowest of seasons. The hotel is older but well maintained for a Cuban resort. People need to remember where they are and what they should realistically espect for a resort in Cuba. It is not rocket science. I met a few first time visitors to the hotel and i am pleased to say they will be becoming repeaters! The ocean was quite warm and they have been working on the beach steadily and have even built a break water to hopefully reduce the impact of hurricanes. They had lost most of the beach after one hurricane so here's to hoping to being so proactive. I was there also in September and I did not witness any culling of cats but there were some there and they were congregating around the buffet area. There is a cultural difference in the different practices and we need to keep that in mind Tourists should really not feed the animals and hopefully they will return back to where they came from. All in all i will always recommend this hotel if you want a simple, restful vacation with a million dollar view and wonderful, friendly staff.

“Best place in Cuba for the price ”
OK, so I rated it excellent even though there were a few faults, but it's the best place I've been in southern Cuba, and I've been to Cuba 15 times. The service was great, staff were friendly, the property was always clean and the pool in good condition. Repairs were being done constantly, although of course resources are sparse throughout Cuba and there is evidence of deterioration from what was obviously once a luxury resort. The grounds are lush and the view spectacular. Food in the buffet was uninspired and repetitive, and the 2 a la carte restaurants serve exactly the same things as the buffet, but hey, I only gained a pound this trip! Seek out the eco-restaurant hiding in the trees. It's a treasure well worth finding.

        “I luv it ”
We got back on June 2, 2014. The weather was great, not so hot during the day and a nice breeze in the evenings, no humidity. Mosquitoes are a factor so bring the spray. Food at the restaurant was very good, did even expect, fresh, beef, veal, chicken, pork, fruits and salads. Our suite was ok, we had a problem with leaking AC at the night of the arrival. They fixed it within 2 hours, not a big deal. The hotel itself is located in a very picturesque zone, it reminds me The republic of Georgia where the mountains come very close to the shoreline, the views are great. The nature is very exotic, nice birds singing, the have a very nice garden/ park bordering the beach, very well maintained, the have a nice gazebo where they put a small restaurant for you to have dinners, they offer lobster tails for extra $15.00. The beach has a grey sand, the aqua shoes are a must, the bottom of the sea is not smooth, it's shallow and has hills and valleys, so you walk into the water, reach the waist line depth and then hit a hill and then climb it and you would get a knee hight depth. The staff were very nice and helpful, at the reception, waiting staff, cleaning, nice artists on the show, a dancing troupe, a magician. Pedro, the travel company rep. was very helpful in organizing the trip to the mountains and to Santiago. The price is 84 cuc, they offered a suv with a guide and a driver, the first half of the day we went to the Big Rock mountain, 120 km away from the resort and 1200m high above the sea level, we had a lunch at the local restaurants which was very bad, don't eat there. After that we went to the city and wandered for good 3 hours, visited the castle on the sea, nice views at the city and the local port. We started at 8 am and finished at 6 pm. The road from the airport and city to the resort and done completely and is very beautiful. It was very hot in the city, our resort offered a very soft and moderate weather. Most of the days were sunny in the first half of the day and overcast in the afternoon, even drizzling or rain at night. The resort has a very nice store were you can buy booze, shampoos, cream, coffee. There were very few people overall, from different countries, Germany, Argentina, and locals. There were guys 60+ with young chicks, and ladies 50+ with local hulks but in no way their behaviour was indecent or provocative, why bother what they do. Of course it 's a low season and the hotel was quiet. The only unpleasant incident we had when we arranged a snorkelling session with the diving center employee, his name is Miguel if I am not mistaken, and the trip was included in the package deal, and he did come to work at the arranged date at all and later claimed he came later during the day but he did not. I put 5 for our trip because we had had a lot of impressions and nice treatment, and to the rest this world is not perfect and republic cuba is not an exception.

        “There's no place like home :) ”
Just returned again, once more from my favorite ocean front place in Santiago de Cuba. We were fthere from May 16th to the 23rd, 2014 and again Brisas Sierra Mar did not disappoint. Even though it was the beginning of low season and the buffet was smaller it was still delicious and offered top notch choices. We had friends who were regulars at another resort in Santiago and got so tired of the lack of good food they gave Sierra Mar a chance and were so pleasantly surprised. Lots of choices and well prepared food. It was delicious! as always. The resort was kept clean and well stocked. There were many Cuban nationals staying at Brisas and it was lively and fun. The staff, what can I say, the sweetest and nicest people i have ever met. From the animacion which is very professional and attentive and caring to the dinning room staff which are fantastic. everyone pulls their own weight which in turn equates a well run resort. I have been at this resort different times of the year and it's just always so good and everyone is willing and ready to help. There are two restaurants- near by, Oceano across the street and Bahai Tropical 3 km down. Both are delicious and well worth going to. Bahai Tropical has the added bonus of being ocean front and it's right out of the Blue Lagoon movie set...totally breath taking. I went for my first scuba dive as well with Manuel, aka Manolito or Manolo. Fantastic, professional, caring and very funny man. I felt totally safe and sound under his guidance. I cannot wait to return this winter for more dives!! The tennis courts were great and not over run by animals like in other resorts lol. I enjoyed my game and left them new balls as the other ones barely had any bounce in them. Seek out Anthony, he will certainly play tennis with you...he's quite in shape so watch out! Again i had the a wonderful, memorable week amongst friends and family and can't wait to return. There is really no place like home and to me Brisas Sierra Mar is home. Kudos!

        “Absolutely Wonderful ”
I went here with my girlfriend and her parents on March 9th to 16th and I have to say it was the most fun I have ever had. Beautiful resort, even better beach and a stunning view of the Cuban mountains. Beach is a little rocky judt off shore and some seaweed here and there but the water is crystal clear and gorgeous. Beach bar is very nice, Ecological restaurant (located just behind the beach) is a nice little spot for lunch. The weather could not have been better, food at the buffet was pretty good and the a la carte restaurants were delicious. There is an abundance of wildlife and the local people are very friendly. Only cons I can think of is that for the first 6/7 days they didnt have piña colada (I know right?) And if youre in the rooms on the 5th or 6th floor it can get a little noisy at night (balcony for the rooms 500-520 or 600-620 are close to the lobby) other than that this resort is fantastic and I would definitely love to go back. We had a free snorkeling excursion and it was one of the best experiences of my life. It was absolutely breathtaking to swim and see the wildlife of the coral reef. If you go I'd suggest bringing some spare clothes, clothes you dint wear anymore and don't need, some of the local people wpuld prefer clothing items or shoes or sandals, sunglasses or hats, rather than money donations.

        “Simply the best! ”
I have visited the Santiago area 6 times and stayed at the two other resorts, the third one was sadly destroyed by hurricane Sandy before I got around to visiting it, nevertheless Brisas Sierra Mar still remains my all time favorite in the area. The million dollar view is out of a dream! The staff is friendly and proffesional, the cleaning staff is top notch whether in our rooms or the public facilities. Never any overflowing garbage bins. The beach is back! They have been working so hard at rebuilding the beach and it is coming in nicely. Some days the water was foggy due to storms at night but we had days where it was crystal clear. The nautical was up and running and I have a date with scuba diving when I return. The catamaran was out daily bringing people for free rides or you had the option of pedal boats or little kayaks...all free. Tennis courts were operational and newly painted. People were using them daily. The pool was very refreshing and when Anthony was there it was my favorite time! Music played by the pool and at 9:30ish he would announce the daily activities. Stretching, aquafitness which I love! Volleyball then history lessons, spanish lessons, dancing and bingo. It all depends on clientele participation but I loved it when he was there. When he wasn't there music was not on for some reason so I headed off to the beach. This is a safe, quiet resort and I ran every morning undisturbed for 45 minutes. DIVINE! The food is Amazing!! I love the Brisas chain- they never go wrong food wise. Not only was it delicious it was recognizable! Bonus!! There's a little town across the street from the entrance of the resort- nice place to walk or jog through and a fantastic restaurant called Oceano is there. Delicious, very affordable food...no reservations required just walk on over. I took in the eco walk with Anthony starting at 8:00am - he is a well of knowledge and fluent in 4 languages plus. He also does a bird watching tour and another walking tour. There are bike tours also available. Our room was clean and hot water plentiful. Safe was at a cost of 14CUC for the week. Well worth the peace of mind. The elevators were functional but I preferred using the stairs, cardio central! I would recommend this resort anytime and am returning for scuba lessons with Manolito and Edgar. Can't wait! There is nothing like a sunset on the Caribbean with the majestic mountains in the background...a truly magical sight.

This was a 4 star but it should have been a 2 1/2 star hotel real bad experience with this hotel, our rep was nowhere to be seen when you asked for him. This would have been a great hotel because the view was breathe taking, but the hotel it's self was a disaster.

Beach was nice, the dark sand does get hot and you should bring water shoes. We went into the water just past the old pier posts where there was no grass and rocks, we didn't need water shoes here and the water was warm. Yes, there are sand fleas, they are not as bad between 10am and 3pm, just make sure you take Deet. They seem to like some people more than others, I had no bites but my hubby had a lot. If you go for walks on the beach the locals asking for or trying to sell you stuff will leave you alone if you tell them you are not interested. We never made it to the pool as we are beach people but it seemed busy with a lot of stuff going on to keep people amused.

        beautiful. I love it!
Virtually everyone who visits Los Galeones is a repeat visiter. Average age is definitely 50+. Staff will remeber you. For example, I hadn't been there in 4 years, yet the head chef remembered that I had given his daughters a gift of green T-shirts a while back. He didn't remember how long it was, but he approached me to ask if I was the one who had done so. On departure day, we had to leave the resort at 7AM. This wonderful resort opens their kitchen at 6AM so you can have a full breakfast before you leave. A desireable feature of Los Galeones is the proximity to the town of Chivirico which is located at the bottom of the hill. Not much to do there for tourists, but there is a party on Saturday evenings. I ventured into Chivirico to look for peso cigars and did locate an outlet. Beware though, once word gets out that a tourist is looking for cigars, everyone becomes your fren and knows someone etc. etc. Unusual thing though is the absolute absence of matches or lighters. I couldn't find them anywhere in Chivirico. Other tourists at LG said the same. Even the store that sold cigarettes did not have any matches or lighters to sell. Overall, I would rate Los Galeones the ultimate for those who want to do nothing and not be bothered by anyone. Good food, good booze (International brands like Disaronno, Martini & Rossi, Kahlua, imported Scotch, and others), good conversation with new friends. Small resort, beautiful. I love it!....I know I have broken the code of silence but I couldn't help myself....but BEWARE OF THE STAIRS
