        “ups and downs ”
My family and I (2 adults, 30, 17 and 13 year old) went to Mayanabo the week of Feb 21, 2014 for one week. We got there later in the evening and went right to out room. The room was old, but clean. The patio door did not lock. We asked to move and we told the hotel was full and there was no way we could move. There was a huge group of Italian people who come to this resort every year and have for 15 years. Honestly I am not prejudice in any way but seriously some of these people we very rude. Because of this it made for some uncomfortable situations. The resort if very clean and well kept, the beach is nice but you would need water shoes for sure. The staff are friendly and helpful and the weather, well it was just fabulous! The food was not bad for Cuba. I have been 5 times and it wasn't all horrible. The al a carte was very good! We found that outside the resort the locals are pushy and try to sell you things and "lobster dinner" at their house. Lobster in Cuba isn't great as far as am I concerned so not worth any kind of money. Santa Lucia is a cute fishing town and it is very safe to travel throughout but just be prepared to get hounded by locals. There is a disco beside the Mayanabo so stay away from the 300 section if you can. It is very loud. The resort kinda grew on us as the week went on and it was a place we thought we would return to.....until the last day. We were almost going to check out and the maid went into out rooms and came running out to the pool area and confronted us telling us we stole 2 towels from our rooms. To make as long story short we ended up having to pay for 4 towels that went "missing!" We were left feeling extremely This was incredibly poor professionalism and left us with an extremely bad taste in our mouths. We tipped all week we were there and felt as though we were being treated like a second class citizen. The maid and her supervisor even threatened to call the police and have us charged with theft which eventually lead to us paying for the towels. I do hope this review helps and if you have any questions please feel free to ask. All in all quite disappointed with this place and will not be going back to that area ever!

        “Very poor”
I stayed at Mayanabo in November and was quite disappointed. It started with the maid stealing items from my room. I brought it to the attention of the front desk staff who simply shrugged. I then met with the manager to get things changed and, while she agreed, never informed the front desk to make the changes. This led to arguments at the front desk and insults from the baggage handlers!! Furthermore, while we were promised entertainment at night, we were informed, once there that we were too early in the fall season and they had failed to book any artists?? There are lots of nice staff working there and it's not their fault that there is a communication problem between management and staff however this should not be my problem. Caracol and Brisas are much better alternatives and often at the same price.

        “Budget Hotel”
Stay here with friends last month just for the night. The hotel is the oldest in Santa Lucia but is well kept. The service isn't too bad, Front desk was quite efficient when we needed something. The rooms are very basic , The room we had offered 2 single beds , We were Ok with it since it was only 1 night. The buffet is basic but to be honest found it to be reasonable considering the type of hotel this is. If you are on a budget this is a good option , However if the price difference isn't much to stay at the Gran Club definitely go with it because it is way better in all aspects!

        “A charming resort! ”
I visited Mayanabo from Dec. 26-Jan.2. The tripadvisor reviews were very helpful but I thought I'd add to the lexicon. The resort has Great staff, decent food, and a very good layout. However, one thing I noticed was that this hotel had an older crowd. If your goal is to party non-stop and you want crowds of social types around you, this place isn't for you (perhaps try Brisas or Cancun). The one thing some of the former reviews don't keep in mind is the price of this place, cheap. So keep your expectations realistic. The ocean is about a 100 m from the main area with the pool but there is a very nice path to walk down there. The entertainment was pretty good most nights and the staff work really hard to ensure that people are happy. The dancing is decent at these shows but my advice is to go to either Brisas, Gran Club, or Caricol for their shows to add some assortment. By the fifth night I was done with the dancing (although the staff are very talented!) The food was decent most days, the highlights being a pasta bar (where they mix your pasta personally in front of you) for lunch and dinner and the same thing with eggs at breakfast. Most of the buffet items were surprisingly good, but tread lightly :) The pool area gets a nice breeze from the ocean and was my favorite aspect of this resort. I was looking for a quiet relaxing place and Mayanabo delivered. The resort was drastically under booked at this time and I loved the lack of lines and noise. (as a note an earlier review mentions "locals"/Cubans frequenting on the weekend and this was true for Saturday and NYE when there were quite a few more people on the resort). They've already been mentioned in former reviews but I thought I'd include some advice: 1. bring a plastic cup with a lid to keep your drinks cold and save trips to the bar as they mostly serve in small plastic cups (this helps when you're on the beach or when the bar is busy). 2. Bring a pair of ocean shoes or crocs for the beach. The beach quite hard on the feet and the sand is very gravelly and full of shells if you want to spend extended time in the ocean. (also as previously mentioned-there is quite a bit of seaweed lining the beach-remember, this isn't Veraderro or Cancun....you get what you paid for) 3. If possible stay away from pod '3". I had a room # in the high 300's and the discos (private) behind the resort are really loud and go until 4am...they shook the room walls sometimes. Again, a plus if you want to dance till 4am with locals and people from the afor mentioned surrounding resorts. 4. Lobster tail dinners: As mentioned in other reviews you can venture off the resort for a seafood dinner. You can either book these through the front desk, randos on the beach, or just go yourself. The streets surrounding the resort are super safe and can give the average resort goer a bit of a cultural experience as there are two villages located close to the hotel. Try the "Havana Club" if you do. It's small residence style restaurant with great lobster and a very quaint atmosphere. 5. cappuccino-Poolside lunch restaurant...drink many, they are great! 6. The White Party- They do this on Saturday night. Def. aimed at younger crowd. It's worth checking out but don't rush out and buy white pants for it. It's a good chance to meet people from Brisas and locals. If you read this far you probably already booked so have fun! I had a great time on the resort and would gladly go back. I met several people on the resort who were return visitors, so clearly people really like this place. The people I met there were great and I had tons of fun. C.

“Not Quite What We Expected ”
Went to this resort in June 2011....was a last minute 'lets go on vacation' kind of event....firstly, the grounds.....a little baron...lots of dying trees....long walk to the beach in wide open dirt fields....food was average...little bland...drinks were the same, average at best....room was alright, they have no balconies....locals invade on the weekends, they get preferential treatment in lines for everything...leave their garbage and cigarette butts everywhere...the beach was below par....beach was dirty and unkept...seaweed up to your waist...un-swimmable....lastly...this resort is filled with old perverts looking to only spend time and money with the variety of prostitutes they allow in the resort ....disgusting....hopefully this place has changed since we were there, from reading some of the reviews, it sounds like major changes were made.....

        “A little Sleepy ”
But, that is what I was looking for. This is a nice resort in a quiet area, it really does deserve another star. The food was very good by Cuban standard. Not a lot of selection but here is the secret. You don't eat everything the buffet has to offer every night. Choose chicken one night, pork the next and the whole issue of variety will be gone. Best potatos EVAR. Beach was great but the young girls do tend to become tiresome after a while. Not everyone is in to that type of activity. Staff are great and the resorts don't really mind if you visit other resorts (there are at least two). I went fishing and caught some great fish (Kingfish and baracuda). We were three people on a catamaran that held twenty, with open bar. Much fun was had. The old question of would I go back. Yes, but with so many other places to see, I probably won't.

Awesome food, coming from the pickiest eater in the world, i ate more then enough every meal. Entertainment was great, you can never be bored... Was there in may 2014. Nice and quiet not a party scene. Service was great by most of the staff! My only complaints was the cockroaches in the first room I was in. And if attending this hotel BRING BUG SPRAY, mosquitoes come out at night.

        “Value for the money ”
Travelled to the Mayanabo March 21 - 28. This resort is in desperate need of a makeover but everything you need can be found on the resort. Check In: While the process was a little slow; I was the last person to check in and the whole process took less than 30 minutes. Shortly after checking in; I was in my room with my all my luggage. The Room: The room was clean when I arrived and was thoroughly cleaned every single day. The beds were a little uncomfortable but I had no issue sleeping. The A/C worked great and there were many nights I had to turn it off or sleep with one of the thicker blankets. About the only negative I can say about the rooms is if you have a second floor room; you do not get a balcony. Restaurants and Food: Been to Cuba 14 previous times so I know what to expect from a food perspective. The food at the Mayanabo was typical of a Cuban resort. The selection is somewhat limited but I had no problem finding something good to eat and never went hungry. The omelette station was always open for breakfast and there was always fresh cooked pasta and meat for lunch and dinner. The service was great; never waited long for a table or water or wine. The restaurant was always clean and there was never a shortage of tables or clean plates. Entertainment: The best entertainment I've experienced in Cuba. The House Band moonlights as the Jazz Band and they are high energy with some amazing talent ! The nightly shows can be somewhat typical of the Cuban resorts but there are some incredibly talented dancers at this resort. Every night I'd wander down to the Piano Bar after the show. Esmerling in the Piano Bar made this an incredible trip. Every day he brought fresh Limes and Mint from his garden. He has a great outlook on life and I enjoyed chatting with him for hours. The Beach: Not a typical Cuban beach. You'll need water shoes if you walk on the beach as the beach is typically lined with small rocks or broken shells. There isn't a lot of shade or chairs on the beach so if you enjoy the beach you may want to reserve your chair early. Nightlife: There is no Disco on site but there are two discos within walking distance of the resort. There are some "ladies of the night" walking the strip but a simple "no gracias" and they will leave you alone. I've been propositioned more while walking the streets of a Canadian City than I was in Cuba. This was a great trip at a great price. A similar resort anywhere else in the Caribbean would have cost me double what I paid for this trip. I will definitely return to this resort again. The Cuban people keep me coming back.

        “Big bang for the buck”
Having traveled throughout the Caribbean for over 40 years, I discovered Cuba in 1980, and got hooked. First in Varadero, of course, then Holguin, Santiago, Cienfuegos, and in 1992, Mayanabo. Since then I had witnessed gradual improvements over many years and stays at the oldest hotel on Santa Lucia beach. And with recent additions of espresso machine, coffee/snack bar, jazz bar, beach bar, and the life guard/marine quarters, Mayanabo now offers the best value in Cuba: the biggest bang for the buck. There are 2 other, 3-star hotels in Cuba architecturally identical with Mayanabo, neither of which has better food, or miles-long, beautiful blond sand beach, or lusher foliage and gardens. Nor, perhaps most importantly for limited budgets, better, i.e. lower prices. Food: great ingredients and variety, though uneven preparation. Rooms: most are renovated, clean, very comfortable. Bars: well stocked. Pool: great for lap swim, or simple frolic. The house band is well rehearsed, full of talent, great Cuban/jazz sound, albeit way too loud for such a small area by the stage. The reception staff are superbly professional, helpful, and informative. Maids, barkeeps, and servers are friendly and pleasant, if slightly overworked, well deserving a decent tip. Life guards and marine guys are great, always there for you. So, relative to any other 3-star hotel in Cuba (remember:oranges to oranges) with similar characteristics (if you could find them), Mayanabo is your best value by far. Occasionally, however, I overhear people gripe about food or booze, and make demands on staff which baffle me. As if they somehow found themselves dislocated from their imaginary 5+star hotel, and now they suffer the lack of caviar and champagne and are forced to drink just beer, or vodka, gin, rum, whiskey, mere house white/red wine, etc., etc. What horror! It is hard to resist saying to them, 'PICK A BETTER HOTEL!', or looking into what trailer park they'd crawled from. My only big peeve is loudness, excessive loudness from big speakers by the pool, where people normally enjoy what they came to do: SUNBATHE, READ, CONVERSE, SIP a cold COCKTAIL, or just ENJOY THE RUSTLE OF PALM TREES in the tropical breeze. That is, when the soft, summery, sweet background sounds are being played, and all is great in paradise. But every once in a while, inexplicably, the volume jumps many decibels, and the romantic music is suddenly replaced by horrendous 'music' with disco-automaton-monotone, repetitive, mindless, ear-bursting noise sufficiently loud for a stadium! Or, someone with a microphone at a super high volume, starts announcing (in 4 or 5 languages) various games or activities meant to entertain us, and thus make us more content. Then, again, in many tongues and high volume, the same is repeated several times. Just to ensure that no one in the entire hotel could possibly miss it, or to perhaps convince us to join in the fun to come. Whether we'd like it or not. And when pool or sand volleyball, or ping-pong e.g. are being played, every play-by-play is announced equally loudly for the benefit of god-knows-whom: certainly not for the players, nor for those around the hotel who care not a whit about it and would like to hear one another conversing, or just enjoying their drink or book. Good Lord, can someone turn the volume down, it costs nothing, and would please the vast majority of guests who are elderly, who appreciate the quiet arts, and peaceful days and nights. (even my children had found the volume extreme when they were here, years ago) What I do is just leave, and move to a quieter place, if I can find one. But to be rudely interrupted, to have to stop your conversation, or reading, etc., is at best frustrating and irritating. Knowing that loudness is a part of the outdoors cultures found in warmer climes, and that most, but not all Cubans are not even aware of 'the problem', I accept it, like sun, cloud and rain, and keep coming back to my home away from home. But why? you may ask. Because, for all the above-stated reasons, Mayanabo is the best deal in Cuba. All the positive traits trump (my) one irritation by far. They greatly outweigh nitpicking gripes by the few who may lack the proper perspective....who do not ask 'relative to what?', or 'compared with what?' After my espresso I take long morning walks on the wide- blond- sand beach, practically empty, inhaling deeply the salty air, feasting the eyes with hues of aqua, emerald, navy and ultramarine, every new view a canvas in the making, every wave lapping the shore a tonic for my soul, my skin gently touched by sun rays and soft breeze, this sanctuary transports me to a place of peace and perfection, it is a tranquil haven, a lazy, sweet, still un-harshed mellow, my Santa Lucia Beach morning, unblemished, bliss. Then for some laps in the pool, and off to the beach bar, just hanging out, looking at the sea, smoking a pure havana, sipping an ice-gin- tonic, reading a novel, conversing with old Mario at the bar and sometimes enjoying the classic sounds of his traditional Cuban band. There is no hotter, spicier or stronger rhythm to bewitch your feet, and make you want to dance. His young lads' singing will stay in your head, you'd want to hear their songs again. As would I, and, God willing, I will, the next season, again.

I stayed there recently over carnival with my two sons (6 & 15). The resort is very basic but very clean. Excellent staff, the resort is so small they all know you and make you feel like family. The resort hosts an older crowd so it isn't loud and doesn't have much of a nightlife. The outdoor disco is a five minute walk if you want to enjoy the nightlife. While we were there the locals were celebrating carnival and the strip down the main road is an all night party for four nights. The noise is unbelievable but it is safe to wonder through at anytime. The beach is nice but coarse sand so you will need water shoes and there are sand flies and mosquitoes so bring spray! I would return again just to see the staff! If you go just keep your expectations of luxury low but know your in good hands and you will enjoy some relaxation.

“Have been here around 30 times. ”
This is a very honest opinion of the hotel. Club Amigo Mayanabo is rated at 2.5 to 3 stars. To me it has everything I need and more so to me it is a 4 star. The rating system is different in The States and Canada so do not expect the same luxury in Cuba as you would get at home. The food is Cuban. Every place I have stayed in Cuba has food that is comparable. Experience the culture by having an open mind. I find that Cubans cook healthy food and I find nothing wrong with it. . I always eat at the buffet so I can't comment on the A la carte restaurant. This hotel keeps improving. There are new dancers which seem very enthusiastic. The entertainment in the evenings is more fun. This is a quiet hotel where you can get some rest. Older guests and not a party zone. The only problem for some travelers is that the public disco down the street is open until 4:00 am and guests who are closest to it, complain about the music. Take ear plugs (easy remedy) .Don't take it out on the reception staff as they have no control over public affairs. The rooms are basic but everything is clean. The employees are wonderful, very helpful and friendly. There are several excursions for the adventurer. I have only done the playa bonita tour which was nice but (to me) no big deal. You can horseback ride here for so cheap. If you are experienced or not, the horses are well trained. Remember to tip your maid, bar tenders, gardeners, waiters etc. If you are able to take items such as toothpaste, nail polish, lipstick, reading glasses, etc you can leave those items as tips instead of cash .and it will be greatly appreciated. It is usually breezy to windy in Santa Lucia,so if you like calm, this is not the place for you. Kite boarding has become a big thing here in the past few years. You can get lessons on the beach. If you are friendly and outgoing, the staff will be with you also. They try to involve guests in activities which is their job so if you don't want to be involved, just say no. I have nothing bad to say about this hotel. It is all good in my eyes. There again, I am an easy going traveler.

“Visit the new local organic restaurant. ”
We enjoyed Mayanabo and it's staff. The place was very clean and they are sprucing it up all the time. The clientele is an older crowd so not a loud rowdy place. The resort was not over full or busy when we were there. It was easy to get beach or pool spots. A great coffee bar by the pool and a bar downstairs that is open late but no one seems to knows it is there. Ernesto the bar tender will entertain with Cuban songs on his guitar between mixing drinks. We only ever saw less than 8 people in there and he is great. The downside is the local club outside the resort grounds it plays thumping music until 4:00 am every night. Take earplugs in case you are at the end of Block 3 closest to the club. A great local spot to visit is a new restaurant in the village of Santa Lucia, it is called Organic, Braulio the owner opened in Jan 2014. He is passionate about his organic garden full of herbs and local fruits that become part of your wonderful meal. Braulio is very knowledgeable in the medicinal properties of food and it was a pleasure to spend an afternoon with him touring his farm. To get there take a horse a buggy displaying a green flag with a yellow sunflower (small flag at the back of the buggy) from the street and it will be a 1cuc fare each way, other wise it might be as much as 10cuc. You will come away stuffed (we had lobster) for less than $20 with tip. We recommended it to others staying at the resort and no one was disappointed. This is a very new concept in Cuba and may in fact be the only organic farm and restaurant in the country; it would be great to help Braulio?s initiative take off. Say hi from Tracie and Greig.

This is not a 5 star hotel. However, it's a great place. The employees are very pleasant and helpful. The rooms and common places are very clean and the food varied and well presented, but it's still Cuba and one should not expect European tables. What is great about this hotel is the fact that there are many places where one can relax, read or simply be alone. Many rooms are on the ground floor and offer a small patio with 2 chairs. These face the sea side are on can enjoy a constant breeze. We went very often to the Caracol, next door, but we intend to choose the Mayanabo, this our second time, from now on. The food is much better and the people friendlier... and I mean friendlier, not after your tips!

Just got back from a great week at a very good all inclusive. First, the staff was 1st class all the way. Next, the buffet was way better than average, pork ribs, shrimp cooked on the grill plus all the other basics. Salad bar maybe could be better but not bad. Nice basic room with a nice patio facing the beach. Make sure you ask for a room on the first floor as there are no balconies. Did not try the a la carte restaurant but heard from other guests that the shrimp was a good meal there. Never had a problem getting a pool lounge but the resort was not that full. Went over to the Brisas Hotel for an aft of volleyball nice place but was very busy with a lot of kids running around, not near as peaceful as this resort. People came over from the caracol next door and were very impressed with our food and especially the service. Hearing from some friends that had to go the the Grand Club resort to look for their lost luggage, the rumours about the hookers are very true. So this is the best out of the four to choose from.

“Good value for the money spent ”
Visited this hotel for a much needed week of R&R between Jan 16-23. For $1160 for 2 of us in the winter, the price is right. As always, take all reviews with a grain of salt. If your high maintenance, try another place. If you go with the flow and don't need much to have a good time, give this place a try. Weather was so-so, we didn't see sun till day 5, but that's not the resorts fault. They could make more of an effort to keep the guests busy on poor weather days, but all in all, i prefer the relaxation. The layout is ideal, small resort, all rooms are close, beach is close. Even for mid January, I'd say the place couldn't be more than half full, this means no line ups, love it! Bartenders were good, drinks plentiful, no premium booze here, but if you like a nice cold beer or rum and coke, its all good. Had a mojito, a gin, a vodka, all is fine. You can get a drink at the lobby or at beach. After 11 the drinks head down to the jazz club. Orlando at the lobby bar is the best, always a smile. These guys work long hours and then you see them back the next morning. Don't be afraid to toss them a tip and a smile and a thank-you. I saw plenty of other fellow Canadians wobbling around with their massive bubba mugs who seemed to be forgetting the word 'thank-you'. As far as food, its what you would expect. You wont starve. Actually the buffet grew on me as the week went on. Always salads, soup, bread, cold cuts, cheese, ceviche. The hot table was pretty consistent, some rice, they love french fries, some veg and some variety of meats (chicken, pork, fish, beef), actually even saw Canadian back bacon one day, go figure. The pasta station works for variety. For breakfast, I found this the least of my favourite, despite a good omelette every morning. Just a real lack of meat to go with breakfast, Oh well, didn't starve. The main area where improvement could be made would be the creation of another a la carte dining option, just to break up the routine. They had something going on a few nights in a private space, but something different would be nice. The snack bar is also disappointing, especially given the lack of variety for eating options. You could get a burger, dog or ham and cheese or a pizza slice, but again, more variety would be appreciated. The service in the snack bar area was hit and miss, big tall guy, I think Daniel, was nice, but service was a long wait most days and most guests didn't know if they were to sit down and wait to order or get it yourself. Perhaps a menu card on the table with what was available to you would clear that all up. As far as lodging, our room that we were first shown was quite bad, small, dingy, broken furniture, it felt more like a prison cell. This is an area where attention could be given, new furniture, paint, just updated overall, would go along way. I know it all costs money and we all want to keep the prices low, but we ended up going to the front desk and upgraded to a suite (read about this suggestion on Trip Advisor from another guest- was $ 10 night- $ 70 for week, well worth it, it was a room that was 10 times the quality). Cleanliness is not an issue here, nice job by the staff. Pool was great, lots of chairs, close to everything, nice breeze from ocean. The beach was fine, yes there is seaweed and some coral, they do their best to tidy it up. The best beaches are definitely down to the right near Brisas as the water is just amazing blue and clean bottom. We did do the Camaguey city tour, it was a nice day trip to break up the cloudy weather the first few days. We had booked the Cayo Sabinal trip with Catamaran but it was cancelled due to the weather. The area of Santa Lucia is simple. Nice people, relaxed atmosphere, safe to walk in all directions and to interact with the locals. There are a couple of discos next door, did hear them occasionally, but wasn't an irritation. We walked about 2 hours to La Boca and had a couple of beer and a bit of fresh seafood before catching a wild cab ride back to the resort, this is totally walk-able but be aware it is 8-9 km from the resort, you can also take a horse and buggy there if you like. Nolitours who did the package also had a 'white party' on the Sat night down the beach which had DJ music, guests from other resorts and some drinks. A nice mixer to meet other people. They actually pick you up in a small train in the front parking lot and take you 5 minutes down the road, it was a good time. Finally, as always we ran into some good people from back home in Canada. Any vacation is what you make of it, you cant control the weather or what challenges hit you. A shout out to fellow Ontarian's Brad (honourable local Mayor of Santa Lucia), Steve and Theresa, Bob and Pat, and a few others. Thanks for making out week a good one. Bottom line folks, Mayanabo is great value for what you spend, the Cuban locals are great and naturally the weather is better than here at home. Go with an open mind and you will have a good time.

        “Enjoyable Vacation !!”
We just got back tonight , I wanted to write this immediately.I've rated this a 4 out of 5, based on the rating of the resort. For a 3 star resort , this is truly a gem. It is clean, the staff are friendly and try to give you a great experience. The Jazz club was a great place to finish the night with a scotch (Clan Campbell). The pool is large and simple, but the layout is perfect , right in the middle of everything, close to the main bar, the coffee bar, the buffet , main lobby, and the hotel rooms. I think that's what makes this resort a favourite with so many repeat visitors, and we met many of them. The resort is an aged one, but they are improving and upgrading it. I had no issues with our room and all the facilities, and as I said, clean !! The beach is typical Santa Lucia , a lot of ocean debris washing up , but is cleaned daily. The resort offers a lot of chairs at the beach and pool. There is no need to get out and reserve chairs, there was always plenty. The pool does offer shade as well !!! The beach bar is relaxing and Ronoldo is exceptional. In short, I would return again, with our group trip too !! Dave , Niagara Falls , ON

“My favorite place for horseback riding ”
I have been many places in Cuba but always come back to Santa Lucia for past 4 years. I have been at the four hotesl but love the Mayanabo, it is smallest but I love the staff there they are always very nice an courteous ans will try to help you with anything. The place has been renovated a little and is kept very clean. When there I horsback almost every day, I have been riding with the guides Oreste and Vladimir, they are the best and have been working for the government stable for over 14 years, they take pride in their work and will bring you where you want to go, wild beach, salt dunes or even see the flamingos. The pool is always well kept as Osmani who by the way is Oreste's brother, takes pride in his work. I love the lifeguard group, Joel is one of the best Kite surfer instructor I have met and him and other life guards will even bring you fishing with the small catamaran. My favorite maid is Daisy she always try to please me in any way she can and finally they have the best jazz band around, I am in heaven when they play, they are called the Sandunga . I love them all and just can not wait to go back.

        “Nice week ”
I stayed at Mayanabo from 29 November to 6 December 2013 and I loved my trip! Honestly, the hotel could be 3 1/2 stars instead of 2 and 1/2. The complex is form the 70s but has been freshly painted. The pool and the rooms are very clean but no luxury (bring washcloth ("débarbouillette"). Chairs (pool and beach) are new. The sea is beautiful, although many people find that there are many algae... is a natural phenomenon after all! The staff is great, especially Daniel at the coffee and Franky at the animation. The excursions are cool (especially the catamaran ride for one day ($ 65) to Playa Bonita for snorkeling at the coral reef). Go also at Coco beach it is worth it (and like 10 minutes in scooter). Many Quebec francophones (the staff speaks perfect English and several strive to speak in French). Many mosquitoes at this time of year. The food ... this is Cuba ... so we should not have expectations too! But it was always something to eat in the buffet (pizza, rice, cooked vegetables) and omelettes for breakfast. For the a la carte menu ... it's not worse. If you have the chance to eat at Brisas, go ahead. The Coffee serves hot dog, fries, hamburger and sandwiches. If you travel with Nolitours, Maryanne and Philippe are on hand to organize activities and to answer questions. There is little evening entertainment, the dancers are good. There is an outdoor disco 4 minutes walk outside the resort. Many security entries resort (street and beach side). In short, quality / price side, it's great! ps: the WATER served is ok to drink :)

“Mayanabo is back in business ”
The Mayanabo was closed for Sept and Oct, but re-opened on November 1st. I was there from 8th to 22nd, and was again pleased to be there. The major changes were fresh paint (though I was disappointed to see they had painted over the works in the restaurant - which had been lovely terra cotta and ochre colours but now are simply washed white), and also they replaced the mattresses. A major change is that on Saturday and Sunday, the downstairs "disco" is transformed to a jazz club, with Sandunga playing. Very good shows! The dance troop is completely changed - all the former dancers having gone and are now replaced with a very energetic group. Their enthusiasm is well shown by the pool during the day, as well as during the show at night. The staff are pleasant and so very helpful - they get right into your heart in no time at all, and genuinely remember their returning guests. My table was always reserved for me, and a glass of vino tinto appeared within minutes of me entering the restaurant. I appreciated their attentiveness. The resort is clean - though tired. It is, after all, one of the oldest resorts in Cuba. But what it lacks in fancy upgrades, it makes up for in spades with its welcoming atmosphere and friendliness. And security is never an issue I'll be back!

This is a well maintained hotel and the beach resort is just a short walk away. Do take note that this hotel is as not as big and luxurious as the rest of the neighboring hotels but the hotel's staff was superb and very accommodating throughout our stay to the point that we memorized most of their name. Special thanks to Reynaldo who at that time been helping us with things to know, Staff at animation - Frankie etc, the guys at Snorkeling (my first time and was worth it even for a non-swimmer like me... don't forget to bring waterproof cam), Martin.. Francois.. and all the staff. Definitely a stay to be remembered.

        “Home Again ”
As always the Mayanabo and it's staff are above and beyond excellent. This was my 33rd time at the hotel and there is always something different to enjoy. The staff, what can I say amazing, Frankie goes far more than expected, he is there to chat if you want or you can enjoy his amazing show at night. He always has a smile for you and can always make you feel as if you were in your own back yard. It is not just Frankie,he is a plus. you must take into consideration that it takes a very well groomed team of personal to make this the best hotel in Santa Lucia. From the cleaning staff, gardeners, barmen and ladies ( that's you Carmen.) and all the manager's. These people work around the clock to make the vacation of a life time. For example on our stay this time Gallego had to work 24 hours around the clock, leave at 3:30 in the afternoon after working 24 hours and then return at 11:00 for another night shift. Would you see that anywhere else. The staff work very very hard and it shows. The rooms are clean, there is the odd crab or lizard but you are in the tropics. The pool is crystal clean and the best in Santa Lucia, always lots of chairs and don't forget ice cream by the pool. The gardens are a site to behold, I find a different flower everytime I return. The food is fresh and fantastic, there is something for everyone. If you are expecting MacDonalds and Swiss Chalet or Hilton style service maybe Cuba is not the place for you, but if you want a peaceful, relaxing piece of paridise , this is the place. I could go on and on but all I can say, for my husband and myself the Mayanabo is home, there will be no other place for us. I want to say thank you to all the staff and Management of the Hotel. Special Thanks to Frankie, Gallego,Carmen, Santiago,Cristina, Caridad ,Emillo,Alli, Felix, Renier and Roberto. To everyone BRAVO y muchas gracias para todo, hasta la vista cuando volvemos en octubre. “Great place to have a vacation! ”
The resort was spotless, there was no garbage anywhere. The food absolutely amazing, lots of choices for anyone, I myself am a very picky eater and always found something to eat (Ps. They have ketchup). We went to both a la carte restaurants, one an international cuisine and the other a seafood restaurant both really good. The resort was almost entirely empty, mostly Cubans at the resort besides a few other Canadians. We loved the quiet, it was very refreshing. The staff didn't speak much English but the English they did speak made it work. If I was to complain about anything it would be the beach, it was a really nice beach, but there was a lot of seaweed, and just inside the water there was a layer of rocks which didn't feel nice when trying to get out. Other than that the beach was nice, but very windy. I recommend going on the rodeo excursion which you get when you book at the resort. It was a fun day, going to real Cuban village and seeing a Cuban rodeo with a beautiful pig roast dinner, absolutely amazing. You also visit an elementary school and see all the kids in class, bring stuff to give the kids, they love it even if its just pencils and pens. We also went scuba diving, we've never done it before so we had to pay for the intro lesson. It was amazing in the ocean and I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to try something new. We also did the snorkelling trip to the coral reef and I'd recommend that for everyone, for 25 pesos you get to go to the second largest coral reef in Cuba and it's such a fun day. Also, on our way to the airport I heard people from the Brisas resort complaining about the food and how they were always hungry cause they didn't want to eat the food. Mayanabo resort was my first trip to Cuba and I'd recommend it to everyone, if your looking for a romantic getaway this is the perfect match.

This was our third visit to Club Amigo Mayanabo, from April 23-30, 2014, and I can only say "WOW!!!" Again, we were welcomed like family. Open arms and smiles all around. This is the best place to be. I would recommend this resort to old and young and all in between. There is something for everyone. Dance lessons by the pool, spanish lessons, and an ice cream cart that comes by the pool to deliver your cold treat. They have added a tea patio. This is so relaxing. Tea at mid afternoon, in the shade of the unbrellas at the front of the resort. Cozy. Victor at the front desk is so helpful. Maricel is just beautiful. She comes to you with a smile and a hug to welcome you. Danniel in the coffee bar, putting the finishing touches on your coffee, a little cinnamon of chocolate heart in the foam of your capuccino. Frankie and Elio from the entertainment crew, so welcoming. They took the time with the spanish lessons. Very helpful. This is a place that you can really go and be comfortable. No worries. I will continue going back again and again. The rooms are spotless, all the staff are so helpful.

        “so safe and friendly”
I took my two daughters 12 and 15 yrs old and their two best friends. So me, "the mama" and four teenage girls. I was worried at first travelling with such a group, but I chose right when we went to the Mayanabo. The staff were so helpful and friendly, especially Frankie. I was able to relax while the girls explored. They have a lifeguard, so even when I wanted to lay back and read by the pool, someone was watching. We went to the beach every evening to look at the stars, and not once did we feel threatened being off the resort. We all discoed every night too. My 15 yr olds had dates with some young cuban men, and they were treated with respect. What a great time. Our group has decided to return every year to the Mayanabo. The people of Cuba, and playa Santa Lucia especially are very welcoming and extremely friendly. I did not feel harrased by vendors at all. If your a single mom, with some children, this would be the perfect spot for your family. Its small, friendly and so much fun!

“Club Amigo Mayanabo - We will definitely be back! ”
We just got back from this resort. I have only positive things to say about it. We've been to 3 other resorts in Cuba that we loved, but never really felt the need to return to them. We are the type of people that can have fun where ever we go and don't expect 5 star treatment or anything. Some people who write reviews seem to expect more than Cuba is able to offer. As far as this resort goes though - we can't wait to get back to Club Amigo Mayanabo! We got off the bus to a procession of animacion staff, music and drinks. The atmosphere was awesome and check in was flawless and fast. The people at the desk were extremely friendly and the man that helped us with our bags not only carried two 45 pound suitcases without complaint, but then proceeded to explain everything in the room from the remote for the tv, to the air conditioning remote. (Thank you Ernesto!) They have a wonderful variety of drinks (including my favourite slushy ones) and the bartenders (Avilio and Damian in particular!) are so friendly and always smiling. The coffee bar was great and Santiago, Daniel and Antonio looked after us and always had a smile or a joke. The rooms were comfortable (but we brought our own pillows which helped! lol) This resort had the best buffet we've had yet in Cuba. The one thing I was completely thrilled about were the washrooms on the resort. We've experienced some less than pleasing ones in the past, but there was almost always toilet paper and if they did run out, it was replaced quickly. It was spotless and the cleaning staff were so friendly. Reynaldo the new public relations guy is a total cutie pie and will be a hit with all the younger girls I'm sure! The bar down by the beach (we called it Mario's bar) was great. Even on the really hot days the breeze blows in and there always seemed to be someone there playing music. The atmosphere is so relaxing - we stayed there way too long, but had a great time and the twins are wonderful singers/musicians. The bartenders in Cuba always pour drinks that are much too strong for me (I'm a bit of a lightweight in that department!) They got to know my request for "poquito" rum or vodka (little bit!) and I never had to ask again. They remember what you like and really work to make you feel at home there. The buffet staff are also really friendly and always have a smile. The food was simple but really tasty. We always found something we wanted to eat and enjoyed our meals. The bread and cookies are phenomenal! This is the first time I've gained weight on vacation in Cuba! lol We've never been this relaxed at a resort or as impressed with how open and friendly the staff are. We can't wait to go back again and made a bunch of friends that have been there many times and will be meeting them back there again this time next year. If you are looking for a nice, quiet, relaxing and clean place, this is definitely one I would recommend. There were people there that I heard say a few complaints, but honestly I think those were the type of people that would be miserable anywhere.. You all know the type! lol This was simply the best vacation we've had yet Oh - one other note - my husband experienced an ear problem while we were there and the nursing staff was awesome! They took care of him and flushed the ear and gave him drops for $10... we didn't bother going through insurance for that little bit. They were really efficient and friendly - we have never had to use medical staff during a vacation and it is good to know you are in good hands if you need to!

I went to Cuba with many reservations. I traveled there to Club Amigo Mayanabo in Santa Lucia on April 3 - 10, 2014. To my great surprise I never had one single moment of disappointment. The room was wonderful, the food good, lots of choices, always something different and very very good. The people are always happy and eager to serve you. The activitiy leaders were wonderful. We were originally booked into Block 3 and all I asked for was a room (if possible) on the first floor. Without hesitation, we were booked into a ground floor room in block 2 close to the pool and beach with an ocean view. Absolutely wonderful. We met several older guests who were there alone. One lady told us it is the safest country to travel to alone. She has gone there every year for over 15 years and never had any issues. I will return to Cuba and to Hotel Amigo Mayanabo for sure.

“"A home away from home" ”
Star ratings mean nothing at this resort. What a fantastic vacation spot. The staff makes this site a 5 star plus. Never felt so much at home, so relaxed, and shortly we became part of the club Mayanabo family. Yes there are things that could use improvement; but the new general manager is definitely moving in that direction. This was our 1st time here and during our 2 week stay from March 27 till April 10 we met so many repeat customers. People return here over and over; some have stayed at all 3 hotels in the immediate area, but prefer to return here. That in itself should stand for the good comments from so many. Don't be concerned about the food folks. The food at the restaurant was tasty and well prepared. If you can't find something to eat here, I would be very surprised. The restaurant has a buffet for breakfast, lunch, supper. There is always fruit, fresh bread, meats, vegetables, soups, desserts, ice cream, plus a hot grill that can prepare eggs, omelettes, various meats, and yes great pasta. We enjoyed, roast beef, pork chops, roast pork, rabbit, fish, chicken, shrimps, and leave room for the cream brule and cakes. There may be some things that looked a little tired, but all of that is improving, believe me. Besides the restaurant, there is a coffee bar serving the best expresso and cappuccino along with hamburgers, hot dogs, fries. They just opened a sea food site near the beach for your enjoyment. Can't say enough about the pool area. The pool is very large and just sparkling. Osmani is the pool general and keeps that pool in tip top shape. There are plenty of chairs to lie on, palm trees to relax under, and a super pool to cool off in. I would be amiss not to mention the bar areas and the selection of drinks and the great service. The draft beer is bucanero and crystal, and so very good!!!!! My brother and his wife have been going there for 11 years, and now my wife and I can see why they return along with many others. One has to know that not everything will be a 100% for everyone. Saltwater air can cause, discolouration on chrome, continued use brings on maintenance, and not every type of food will please everyone at all times. Our room was spotless and so very clean. To us, this is a great place for a great price. Go for the R and R, sit back and relax, take in all that is around you, be spoiled by the staff, and just enjoy each and everyday. Our hats are off to the management, and again one big thanks to all the staff from the cleaning staff, the restaurant, the coffee bar, the pool, the gardeners, the bar tenders, the cooks and each and everyone that made our trip one to remember. I can't mention everyone but special thanks to Angela, Santiago, Amelio, Daniel, Dameion, Eddy, Osmani, Oscar, Martin, Saddia, Santa, Rose, Marylyn, Renaldo, Roberto, sorry if I missed anyone. The Good Lord willing we will return next year.

        “more improvements ”
We have been frequent visitors to this property over the years. It continues to improve by leaps and bounds. I think back to our first visit here in 1995 and the changes that have been implemented. Some of the changes the last few months have included: - many of the mattresses are new, in Block 2, the beds seem to be a little higher which is great for tall people and people with bad knees and hips - pillows are new - many rooms were repainted - new decor in the restaurant - more comfortable chairs in the restaurant - new furniture in the lobby - new decoration at the cabaret area - new Dance Group with new shows in the evenings - reopening of Sala de Fiesta as Café Concert ¨Gato Jazz¨ (Jazz Cat) with a weekly special program which incorporates two jazz performances. When we were there in Jan the Gato Jazz club was open Thursday and Saturday after the cabaret - new Nautical Centre - the seafood restaurant at the beach has re opened - they also had large bed like swings this trip at the beach. The staff are wonderful as always, accommodating, cheerful and friendly. Check in is usually quick. It is still a place where you can wander and explore the area freely and without fear.

I travelled to Mayanabo February 7-14 2014 with two girlfriends. We had a fantastic time. My friends have come before and return every year and now I know why. The resort is not fancy but the people who work here are fantastic! everything is super clean and the food was good. lots of variety, we never got bored with the selection. I enjoyed my visit so much Im going back in April!

“perfect in every way !!! ”
Just back from the best week I've ever spent in Cuba (third trip) . Better than I'd expected and the FOOD ? Fantastic ! Really !- many, many choices at every meal. Fresh fruit and juices out of this world ! Ever had deep fried french toast ? OMG! The package I took had 3 'Dine Around' options - meaning you can go to any of the three other Resorts nearby for a meal. Nice change. Rooms are basic - but everything was spotlessly clean and cheery. Staff excellent: Helpful and friendly - especially one young man, Reynaldo, AND his English is excellent ! So, Thank you, Reynaldo :-) House band /entertainment excellent. Coffee delicious. Beach huge and clean..with lots of seating and umbrellas. I plan to go back to the same Resort next year for a much longer stay.

        “Best vacation ever!!! ”
This was by far our best experience to date. We brought 17 friends and family with us this year and everyone had a great time. Our most enjoyable remembrance will be the time spent with your entertainment staff. What a fabulous group of people. The hotel staff can't do enough to please, be it food, special drinks or a perfectly cleaned room. We'll be back!!!!

“Our Home Away from Home ”
Once again we experienced another great vacation! Having been to Mayanabo at least 10 times, over the last 8 years, and this was our 36th time in Cuba over the course of 25 years, and this is our home away from home! We have grown to love the staff, cleanliness, amenities, comfort, and food, we can count on being looked after to the best of their abilities. We have brought at least 50 family and friends to this resort over the course of the years, and everyone has had many wonderful memories and experiences. They are always trying to please and make things better, the pool is the best we have ever experienced in Cuba, Osmany has looked after this for at least 20 years, and it is pristine. Beach is clean white sand and a bit hard to walk into, as it is just off the second largest coral reef in the world it does have a bit of coral in the water, so water shoes would be recommended, but manageable. Food is getting better every time we have been there, again I am Celiac and they catered to my diet perfectly. Being a quaint resort it has only one al a carte, but they are in the process of adding another one down by the beach. Rooms are basic, but clean!! If you have any issues with mosquitoes, just ask to have your room sprayed. Do not forget you are in a tropical paradise so there are bugs! Having free paddle boats, catamarans, snorkelling equipment etc is an added bonus also. And where can you receive one of the best massages available for $20 CUC an hour? OMG! If you cannot find what you are looking for, just ask!! Most of the staff speaks English, and if they have a problem understanding you they will help you find someone who will. There are horses and buggies available to take a tour around Santa Lucia or to Coco Beach for a few Pesos CUC and it is an enjoyable adventure, we recommend a Horse and Buggy Driver named Felix, a yellow buggy that usually sits outside of Mayanabo, and is not affiliated with the hotel, but he is a memory all on his own, he will not disappoint you, just tell him Lynny and Paul sent you. If you are looking for a small quaint quiet resort, on a beautiful beach and the second largest coral reef in the world, with a staff that wants to make your vacation a memorable one, you have come to the right place.

Hotel band is top notch, amazing talent up there. Rooms in block 2 ( 2nd time staying in them) are very nice and clean. Pasta bar for lunch or dinner is my personal favorite. Staff very friendly. Coffee bar excellent (good espresso) Many people offering "giant" lobster tail dinner at their houses for around 10-12 pesos, well worth it. Deep sea fishing (65 pesos!) dirt cheap, almost guaranteed to catch at least a barracuda besides yellow tail, albacore tuna, mahi mahi etc. Fresh water pool is kept very clean. Cozy, kind of quiet hotel. Great bang for the buck for people just looking to get away on a tight budget makes most guest staying there real down to earth. Will definitely return again....soon.

“Horse back riding with Yorge@ Mayanabo ”
I've already written a review on this hotel when I was there in April. It is a very quiet place and the one I will stay at on my 3rd trip in either March or April 2014. The staff here are wonderful and attentive. They take great care of you. Other reviews complain of people and their "company". I don't care what or who others choose. It's about me and how I spend my time. I'm not there to judge others and their choices, I go to get away from all that as and enjoy the Caribbean. I also want to promote my very good friend Yorge. You can usually find him on the beach trying to get people to go out on horseback or buggy. Yorge is very friendly, very trustworthy, funny and he'll take care of you. If you need help with anything he's your guy.
