      “Worst Holiday experience EVER! ”
My family and I saved for months to go here. We read review after review and thought with all the positive feedback received it must be worth the money and its 5 star review. On first impressions this hotel looks great. You enter into an impressive reception / lobby area, check in is quick and straight forward and after a long flight (9 hours from the UK) the transfer is only 25-30 minutes. On being issued our rooms key card we were given instructions on how to use this and advised not to keep near mobile phones etc as this would render this useless and would need 'resetting'. When we got to our room it didn't work so we trudged back to reception to advise them. They issued us with another key card and was sent on our merry way. This was a constant battle throughout our holiday. In the end we accumulated 7 different key cards and on one occasion at 9pm the maintenance man had to replace the full lock which took him 2 and a half hours. During this time we were trying desperately to get our baby to sleep but he seemed to have no awareness or consideration in our plight. We entered the room which was clean enough but the door and its frame were rotten, which in my opinion wouldn't stand a strong gust of wind. The room had a damp musty smell which we thought was simply down to the humidity etc but it was in desperate need for renovation especially the bathroom area. The gardens are pretty around the pool area but stray just a little and you enter into a completely different area that one could liken to Pripyat after the Chernobyl disaster of 86. There is an archery area which hadn't been used in months despite the brochure advertising this as one of the available leisure activities. Throughout our stay we never heard or witnessed that this was available. The pool looked clean enough but when you entered the water from the shallow end it was like stepping onto a bouncy castle due to the lining not being fitted correctly. The activities around the pool were in my opinion extremely poor and quite honestly became an annoyance as the week went on. The walk down to the beach is pleasant but be mindful of the rusty nails which protrude from the boards as one wrong step could result in a lengthy stay in hospital. This was reported but after checking on our last day hadn't been rectified. The food in the buffet was terrible. The guy who cooked the meat used the spatula for raw food to also turn the cooked meat. Needless to say we rarely ate meat. The choice was poor and at times looked and tasted that it had been sitting there for hours and even days. After our first visit to the buffet 4 of our group of 8 became ill. This seemed to the norm for the next 2 weeks. Only 2 of our party didn't become ill and that's because all they ate was bread, biscuits and ice-cream. 3 of our party had to pay a visit to the onsite doctor who didn't seem surprised to learn of our symptoms and advised us of what foods were best to eat and which were best to avoid. Most of us didn't eat anything other than Pringles for the last 6 days. The Italian didn't fair any better either and if you book to go on an evening the service was terribly slow as it was in the International Restaurant. The only meal I enjoyed was the lobster at the Rachon restaurant which sadly was only ever open during lunchtimes but one of my friends received an undercooked steak which he returned. The staff seemed standoffish unless you're Canadian and tip from the outset. They would rarely strike up a conversation unless money was visible in your hand. On the last 2 days of our stay staff would then acknowledge you, strike up conversations about family, show you pictures of their children or nephews and nieces if they didn't have their own and cheekily request clothes from you when you left. Coincidentally a lot of the staff purported to have children exactly the same age as our own children! The people in charge of the kids club would simply play on their phones when in charge of the children. After the third day we stopped our children going altogether. The mosquitos and other insects that bite were intolerable. Now I don't usually get bitten myself but I itched from head to foot for 2 whole weeks despite bathing in repellents etc. If you're visiting arm yourself with tropical strength repellent although this seems to attract them rather than repel them. Overall we were extremely angry and disappointed. We would not recommend you visit this hotel and based on this experience will not be returning to Cuba.

      “VERY TIRED ”
Would say that the hotel could do with a revamp. Went on my honeymoon to the hotel never got the champagne that they said that we would get. They said we were going to get surprizes at night but they never happened. The staff seem to go to the people that go there year in and year out.Entertament through the day was a bit on the poor side at night it was a bit better but not a lot to shout about. Food was not up to much as it was on a day to day roater. The Italian restaurant was the best for food had some great food and service in there would recommend a visit. On a good note the gardeners were very friendly and the cleaners were great all spoke every time we seen them.

“So much potential and yet lacking in some areas ”
September 15th to the 22nd 2014 - First time visit to Cuba, second time in a Melia hotel (Cancun 2011), and I have a lot of mixed feelings about the place. Upon arrival, we were greeted with the entertainment crew dancing and some Cuba Libres, which was very nice. The beach is one of the prettiest I've ever been to, with also probably the warmest sea water I've ever experienced. The hotel has some romantic charm that you might expect when you think of Cuba. However, unfortunately, it is a bit run down. From what I've seen and experienced, it needs better preventive maintenance instead of only corrective maintenance. Our room was the 1314 and the balcony door had the lock broken, the air conditioning was missing the labels on the controller, so we would never know the temperature we were setting, the filter above the entrance had way too much dust, the white bathtub is losing the polish and the water pressure is very low. The 3rd bed that was added had a mattress that has seen too much use, as is extremely worn (experts say they should be replaced every 5 years, even if they are flipped over constantly). Going from the room to the beach, using the board walk close to the baby club we saw a broken board and a few others that were about to brake as well. The next day the broken board had already been replaced, but the ones that were almost broken were kept. The Hemingway pier is very pretty, but in some places, as you walk along, you feel that it is a bit too unstable and that some boards or main beams that hold the pier should be replaced. This is what I mean when I mentioned preventive vs. corrective maintenance. One of the areas that I felt to be the most underachieving ones are the Cubanito bar and the sports centre close by. The shooting range and the other courts have been neglected, probably as there weren't that may activities taking place there. I struggled to find the sports centre the first time, as I was looking for the shooting range to do some archery. The bartender at the Cubanito must have one of the loneliest and depressing jobs at the hotel, as it is practically deserted, even though it has a better pool table than the one close to the lobby bar and a foosball table. Maybe more awareness of the place, better indications or different activities could be beneficial to the area. In terms of cleanliness, I've had a hard time. Beach towels, table cloths, napkins, dishes and tableware were in most occasions, either dirty (dishes, glasses, forks, spoons... ) or with stains (beach towels, table cloths and napkins). I can understand that the people who wash the dishes might not have good moral for the task, but maybe if you have a tip jar for this staff, or even if the tips the waiters receive would all go to a single fund, to be split by all staff, this would help the morale of that part of the staff and motivate them. In terms of food and restaurant quality, I felt that some of the food at the Las Palmeras buffet could be improved. Also at the buffet, service could be improved by having one waiter at the door to sit you at appropriate tables and asking for the beverages right away, rather than having to call a waiter or waiting to be noticed, as it happened on our first night. The tortillas at the breakfast were very nice, as was the ice cream, but the bread, croissants, donuts, the small pieces of pizza and the dishes in the buffet need a bit more work. Two things I found to be happening all the time was the name of the food and the food itself did not match, despite the efforts of Vania during the breakfast, and the fact that the ladles to pick up the food were being set in the hot plates, rather than the small porcelain plates, resulting in occasional hand burns. For the other restaurants, the food was nice, although my suggestion is that if you are out of one dish, print out new menus, rather than having someone ask for the calamares and being told they have been out for almost 2 weeks. The cocktails could be improved. While the Piña coladas and Miami Vice were good, the great majority could be improved. I?d suggest having some training from some of the bartenders from the Melia Cancun, where the daiquiris are some of the best I?ve tried, and also having a bit more of variety. The aquatic activities are nice and the equipment is rather new (windsurf, kayaks and pedal boats). As for the masks and breathing tubes for snorkeling, they are ok. In terms of the staff, the vast majority were impeccable. Abel at the beach bar, Diolexis at the pool bar, Jesus at the pool bar during the afternoon and then at the La Laguna and Bonasi restaurants, Ivan at the same restaurants, Lázaro at the beach grill "El Viecho y el Mar", Sergei at the Habanos bar, one of the entertainment staff that was pretty much always in charge of the archery, one of the girls at Las Palmeras during the breakfast service that always knew I wanted the tea in the morning, I cannot say one bad thing about them, as they all worked impeccably, always with a smile in their faces and a delight to talk to. The dancers did an amazing job, with some of them staring at 10 in the morning for the stretching/yoga and working late in the shows and at the disco, always interacting with everyone and with little Amelia. I do however have a major complaint about 2 waiters at dinner service in Las Palmeras, on the 20th of September. We arrive to dinner at 9 hours in the evening, with many tables waiting to be cleaned. It was weekend, so it it was a busy night. Seeing that no table could sit 3, we went to get food, as it made sense that in the meantime one table would be cleaned. When we got back, there was still no table. We waited and waited until we were tired of waiting and sat down at one, hoping for it to be cleaned. It was in an area close to Mr. Rolando station. First, Mr. Mentrelli (not sure about his name) came and said that we shouldn't have sat down at a table that wasn't ready. He was then followed by Mr. Rolando. When he finally came to our table, after fetching a soup for the table just behind us, were he was being very polite, he rudely said that we shouldn't have sat down at a table that wasn't clean, to which we replied that there weren't any. Instead of realizing that and offering to clean up one table, he again rudely replied that in that case we should wait until one was cleaned, which we did, to no avail. Not being satisfied, instead of asking us if we wanted anything to drink, he just brought some water and rudely said "here is some water". Even his supervisor couldn't get him to do anything, as he told him "look at this, nothing is done" (all the tables were still to be cleaned). Mr. Rolando didn't take much consideration to his supervisor comment as well. All of this could have been avoided if Mr. Rolando had been more polite and being told that there were not tables for 3 available, would either clean the table we were sitting at or would ask us to wait for just 5 minutes to setup a different table for us. Even one of the gardeners, Julian, had more manners than Mr. Rolando. For comparison, on the 22nd, at lunch service, the waitress saw that there had been a mistake with the order, apologized immediately and came back saying that in 2 minutes and the order would be corrected. Our flight was only at 8 in the evening, with checkout being up to noon. Upon checkout, I asked if there was a safe, where we could store our luggage until the time of the pickup. The reception said yes and indicated where it was, which I found strange. It is just a room, unlocked and with a broken glass door, that anyone could come in, and put or take any piece of luggage, meaning that it wasn?t very safe. Normally, this is an area that only one member of the staff has access to, is locked and you get a token that matches your luggage, as to prevent people going in and possibly taking something out. In short, the hotel has a lot of potential. While it is getting there through the efforts of the management, at the moment it just doesn?t have all the glory it could have.

      “Watch your belongings ”
I have to first say, watch your belongings in your room very carefully! On day three, after tipping our cleaners with money and small gifts I noticed that my jacket was missing out of the closet. We immediately put the "do not disturb" sign on our door and left it there. We came back to our room the next day and noticed that the sign had been take down. We also noticed that my husband's favourite dress shirt was now missing out of the closet. Unbelievable, I know! On the bright side, the beach is amazing! One of the nicest I have ever seen, especially during low tide when you can walk a good 50 feet out in ankle high water. Make sure you check out the beach party that they have. It is the best night of entertainment there. Dancing and d.j on the beach. The dive shop was pretty busy and initially we were rushed into our rental gear and felt a bit "under planned" but after a little chaos we were taken out to some great spots and the guides were attentive and made sure the experience was safe and enjoyable. Wait for the afternoon dives and you might be able to have a private dive like we were lucky enough to have. Spotted eagle ray was so beautiful! The food is good if you know what to eat. You have to understand that Cubans for the most part live off their land, so certain things are not going to be available. The chicken and rice was always a yummy option. The buffet times were a little hard to work with. You have to wake up early to get breakfast in before 10am and then there is no lunch until 1pm. Dinner also doesn't start until 7pm. Because of these times, we ate a lot of ham and cheese sandwiches from the snack bar which is open all day and night. There are two lobster restaurant/bars just down the beach where you can have great lobster dinners for $15. Do not get the lobster on the resort. It's the same price and not as good as the others. One is beside the Iberostar resort and they grill their lobsters. They also sell $1 beers but no mojitos. The other is a bit of a walk down the other side of the beach, past the Sol resort. They make the best mojitos there and the lobster was the biggest carribean lobster I have even seen. The staff were great once you tipped, but being in the service industry myself this feels a bit backwards. Usually you work for your tips. They seemed to wait for you to show the money before they would even show you a simple smile. No smiles or hellos as you walked around the resort either. Unless of course, they remembered that you had tipped them. Bar notes: They have a lot of alcohol there that you wouldn't expect. Great whiskeys (even jameson) and vodkas, an irish cream for your morning coffees. Our room was fine. Bed was hard but comfy and there was even a few english movie channels for the rainy days. Bring bug spray and calamine lotion! The mosquitos are so bad! Everyone there was covered in bites. Cuban mosquitos are smaller, you can barely see them and they bite like sand fleas. Even with the loss of our things, we still did have a great time in Cuba... However, we'll see how the resort and/or Air Transat addresses these issues before considering a return visit to Melia Cayo Guillermo. Both Air Transat and Melia have not emailed or called back yet.

“You Get what you pay for... ”
I start by saying we payed very little for this trip and for the $600-700/person that we payed I have to admit it was a good value. That being say, the price can attract a different crowd and we were very unlucky in that regard. We spent an entire week listening to foul-mouthed, drunken patrons where fist fights broke out and one guest actually tried to drown another. When another patron asked them to stop swearing as there were children around the culprit went over and through all their belongings in the pool. This is only a taste of the unruly crowd we had to suffer. I was embarrassed as many of them were Canadian. As for the hotel itself: Positives: - Can't say enough about the friendliness and warmth of the staff in every capacity from front desk, to food/beverage service, to housekeeping, and grounds people. - The grounds were pretty and the beach was nice (although very narrow). - the rooms and property were very clean - really pleasant musical entertainment in the bars at night. Negative: - The rooms were very tired and dated, the toilets didn't flush properly, the bathroom was dingy, here was no hot water. - The pool liner did not fit properly and you were walking on folds of plastic that felt rather creepy. - There was only one pool which was pretty, but no way of getting away from the rowdiness. - The food was average at best in the main buffet, but the Italian and International restaurants had better fair. - There was much out of the ordinary to do. We did take a taxi into two different cities - Ciego de Avila and Moron, but wasn't overly impressed with either. If you travel to either to get a taste of every day life - choose Ciego de Avila. - The mosquitos and sandflies are terrible!!! Bring bug spray for all the good it does! Overall I would give the experience a 6/10 and I don't think I would return.

“Average hotel, beware of the bugs.”
There's nothing special about this hotel. Melia Cayo Guillermo has a lot of bumps and bruises, most of which are brought to the attention of the staff constantly. We upgraded our room on the first night, and we got a horrible room. Our mattress had stains, there were bugs in the room, had no hot water, and no water pressure in the toilet and shower. A few days later we were upgraded to a better room which had all of the issues resolved. However, getting this new room was like pulling teeth. The resort had many pools of still water, so there were bugs galore. I got attacked by Mosquitos and sand fleas, and had to make my way to the resort doctor for relief. One of the only good things about this resort was the buffet, which was small but very good. The resort had it's ups and downs, but I'm still not sure if all the negatives were worth it for the price. If you get a chance try to meet Yaniel, he was the best worker there!

      “A relaxing week in Cuba”
Before I booked this hotel, I had read the reviews and joined the group on Facebook - so I was pretty clued up on what to expect. We travelled with Thomas Cook from Manchester airport and stayed 7 nights from 24th September - 1st October. On arrival at the hotel, check in was swift and everyone was offered a drink as they waited. Unfortunately, the first set of room keys we were given did not work and we had to return to reception. We took the opportunity to ask for a quieter location in the hotel as we had been placed above the stage/evening entertainment. The ladies on reception were very helpful and placed us in room 1202, which was in a block off the main hotel. It was a bit out the way, but we asked for quiet and that's what we got. The room itself was surprisingly good. I've read a lot of reviews complaining that the rooms need updating and yes, the fridge was a bit knackered, the bathroom was a bit tired and the mattress was wearing thin... But in general the room was well presented and had everything you'd need. There were even 2 English-speaking movie channels as well as the usual news available on TV. Mini fridge was usually refilled with a 1.5ltr bottle of water, 2 soft drinks and a beer (although this seemed a little inconsistent). We didn't get any hot water through the shower in the entire time we were there, but it wasn't needed in the heat. Air conditioning worked beautifully and we had no sleepless nights. The resort grounds are ok. I've heard many regulars say how wonderfully the grounds are presented, but outside of the main pool area, there are quite a few broken boardwalks and untidy areas. We spotted 2 drinks cans (obviously dumped there by a thoughtless guest) that were on the grass, near our hotel room for SIX DAYS! I couldn't believe that no one had removed them in that time. The general state of the hotel could be better. It is starting to look run-down in places. We noticed most of the rooms on our block had a big damp patch on the exterior wall - presumably from where the bathroom appliances were leaking. A lot of the paintwork around the hotel is worn. The food was ok. I have no previous experience of Cuba to compare it to, but we didn't go hungry. The food at the main buffet restaurant did get repetitive, but we knew not to expect Michelin starred food here. Think 3 star European and you will be ok. The Italian restaurant is the best place to go for lunch to escape the heat. The pizzas there are to die for! The pool area is very pretty. There were plenty of loungers, but I don't think the hotel was at full capacity. The beach was very beautiful as said many times before. We spent most of our days there sunbathing and splashing about in the sea. We booked the holiday to get away from work, chill out and spend time together. We definitely managed that here. Can't comment on the evening entertainment as we never used it. There were occasionally singers and pianists on the lobby bar which was very pleasant. WIFI IS NOW AVAILABLE! It's 4.50 CUC for 1 hour, but you can log in and out as you please. We used it in the lobby a couple of nights. Best bits: - get up early and see sunrise at the pier. The colours in the sky are breathtaking. - on a still day, the water at the beach is crystal clear and very shallow. Perfect for sitting out in. There are plenty of fish who will join you! - the staff, on the whole, are very friendly and you will get a good service regardless of tipping (although leaving 1 or 2 CUC after every meal seemed quite customary) - Pilar beach is only 10 CUC return by taxi and is the best beach I've ever experienced. Loungers are 2 CUC. We went 9am-12pm one morning and it seemed ideal as it gets busy in the afternoons. And the bad: - in the beach restaurant, my husband asked the waiter what the couple next to us had ordered, as he thought it looked good. We were told 'no, no... They are special friends of chef. You have to choose from menu'. I was flummoxed. But this wasn't the only time we came across this. In fact, we felt like second rate guests by the end of our stay. This hotel must learn to respect it's new customers as much as their regular 'family' who come back year after year - after all - we're the ones leaving the reviews! - the main bar is in the lobby which has NO air conditioning. I understand this is not an issue for everyone, but I have some medical issues which mean I suffer badly with heat. I've never been to a hotel where I couldn't have an evening drink somewhere nice and cool and this led to us retiring to our room early every evening. - my husband was taken aside by a gardener who tried to sell him jewellery. While he didn't feel intimidated, I doubt it is hotel policy. - the liner on the pool needs addressing. The liner is ripped and lumpy to walk on where it is not sealed. I was disappointed at the state of it for a 4-star hotel. All in all, would we return? .... No. But not because we didn't enjoy our stay. We just want to see more of the world. This hotel is perfect for people who want to do the Caribbean on a budget. BUT... the management need to wake up and realise that they cannot survive off repeat guests. Some big investment is needed in this hotel to keep attracting new customers. I have heard rumour that Thomas Cook are considering dropping this hotel and I can't say I'm surprised. I understand that it is hard to make improvements in Cuba, as there are still huge restrictions, but the state of the hotel is letting down the staff that work so hard there.

“Good food, lovely beach but not five stars ”
My husband, friends and I stayed here at the beginning of September. The beach is beautiful, but food can be disgusting if you adventure to any other place than the buffet. The worse is that management does not seen to bother when a complain is make. For example when we first arrived, at the hotel,we went to the Ranchon by the beach, what an error! The fish I asked was not cooked fresh, the rice I was served seemed to have been cooked 10 years ago. My husband food was in similar conditions. We went to complain and the lady who we spoke to, did not seem to understand English and once I explained in Spanish was unable to apologise or offer a solution. Jesus, which I believe is the manager was never around in the 2 days we were in this hotel and clients are not encourage to provide feedback like for example in the Melia Cayo Coco, ( which is a great hotel) The entertainment is poor and the show at night is a sad one. Tips: if you stay here, give plenty of 'tips' (propina) & you will be treated 'good enough' for the rest of your stay. Also make sure you eat at the buffet and you won't have any trouble as the food here is good.

      “Fabulous Cayo Coco ”
My son and I stayed at the Melia Cayo Coco between 20 th and27th October.the reception lobby is lovely apart from in the evening when the air is thick with cigarette and cigar smoke which is not pleasant for people like myself who have asthma. We had requested a non smoking room which was not available on the evening we arrived but thankfully the room we were given didn't not smell of tobacco .The standard rooms are big, clean with comfy beds but the bathroom and general decor is very dated and definitely need to be updated urgently. The dining room, grounds, pool area are very well kept.Again it was shocking that people were smoking in the snack bar where other people were eating! Food was very good and the Italian restaurant worth a visit. We were very impressed with the staff who tried really hard to make our stay memorable. In the dining room the guy who made the fresh juice, the egg chef, our waitresses Yacqueline,Yamilet and trainee Emilio were wonderful. At lunch time Lamy and her friend were so attentive.Pepe who served us with coconuts every morning by pool was hilarious. Best of all was our friend Mavi ....so pretty yet talented singer, dancer, aqua aerobics teacher etc.She made us feel special and the other members of animation team like Amilady,Islet ,Alex were brilliant. The evening entertainment was of a very high standard and the dancers were talented.Shame that very few people attended. The jazz band in lobby was the best I have ever heard. The beach is quite narrow but gorgeous and the sea soooo blue.My son wanted to go kayaking but was only able to go once as the centre wasn't open we were told due to weather. The grounds are so well looked after by hardworking groundsmen. The staff make this hotel and work extremely hard to make all guests feel welcome. If we go again it would be worth paying extra for a junior suite. I m not sure if insecticides are sprayed but the Mosquitos were a nuisance and we had to spray ourselves with insect repellant often. We met some great Fellow Brits and some lovely Canadians.Over all stay was awesome. As far as resorts in Cayo Coco go this one is definitely number one.The smoke I presume will be an issue to non smokers at every hotel.

      “Little piece of Paradise ”
First family holiday, Stayed from 22/10/14 - 29/10/14 so I'll start with the positives, The staff were great everybody smiley and polite always saying hello, service was good always being asked if I needed a top up for my beer, chefs happy to cook fresh food for you, a special mention for Edel for always being cheerful and greeting my son with high-fives everyday. The location just yards from the white sandy beach was perfect, coconut palms swaying in the breeze just like you imagine the Caribbean to be. The negatives well the food did get a little repetitive and the hotel itself does need some redecorating, just to give it that little extra. Would I go back? I'm already booking it.

“Another great week at MCG. ”
The Staff, the beach and Hotel Grounds is why we return year after year. This time was no different and we saw positive changes. Loved the décor change in the Lobby, Air condition in the Italian Restaurant, Cigar Lounge and soon to be Beer Lounge. We emailed ahead to Carmen and and requested a quiet room on third floor and we were not disappointed. Urimary and her reception Team do a fantastic Job of addressing any issues you may have. Special mention for Linet at front desk. Glad to see Mikail, Mary and Marushki from the Customer Service Dept who are always willing to assist you. Lobby Bar Staff provide excellent service. Anna, Yosvanny, Orlando we missed Edgar sorry to hear he was not well. Spent time in the New Cigar Lounge with Serguey. Always a smile and great service from him. The Restaurant Staff that served us and provided excellent Service are Jesus, Louis, Remberto, Umberto, Ramone, Mayleine, Jacqueline, Junior and of course Kiki the chef in the beach restaurant. Wilbur and his Entertainment team work hard to keep the guests and kids entertained, Special mention go out to NoelKis, Gali, Greta, Jimmy and Glevis. Food was great and the Beach was amazing. We will return again to see all out friends. Carmen thanks for another beautiful week and coming in on your holidays to visit us. Jesus you have some fantastic staff and you should be proud of them. “Another Good Time ”
Just returned from another exceptional time at Melia Cayo Guillermo in Cuba. The reason we return again and again, is the staff. This time, no exceptions, the staff were great. The animation team again provided great entertainment and from the entertainment on the terrace, like Daniel Herranz and the piano in the lobby played by Elizabeth, they were all fantastic and made for an enjoyable trip. Although I thought the food was not as good as in the past, I always found something to eat. Was very disappointed that there was no Congri rice all week. THe hotel is starting to show it's age and updates need to be done or the clientele will start to try other places...especially since a new hotel is to open in January in Cayo Coco. All in all it was great especially because of the group we travelled with and the hard work of the Animation team...........

“Hemingways secret is out of the bag!!! ”
This trip being our second to the Melia Cayo Guillermo I can say with all confidence that this hotels staff make it worth the repeat business. Pro's: Direct flight from Pearson (3hrs 5 min to Jardines Del Rey) Amazing beach Unbeatable selection of "included" premium liquor brands Able to visit other Sol/Melia hotels at no additional cost Con's: Dated rooms* No elevator service Some maintenance issues* * Having spoke with the staff at the hotel, they know what the issues are, and are doing what they can about them. I think what people fail to realize when writing these reviews is how much U.S. imposed trade embargo's on the country make things like building materials and other imports very difficult to come by. Standing in line at check in minding our own business when Carmen from sales approached us and called us by name. You see, Carmen is the administrator for the hotel's facebook page and recognized my wife and I from our posts on the page. What a lovely way to start our vacation and be made to feel special. And that's just the start. Amenities: The hotel has all the amenities you'd expect including childcare, spa, massage, gym, on site physician services. Beach: Melia Cayo Guillermo has been open for 14 years and trust me when i say that of all the resorts on Cayo Guillermo that share this beautiful beach they have the longest and best groomed section of all. The center piece is the 200 meter long pier which is perfect for fishing or snorkeling from. This is also a resting spot for some local Double Crested Cormorants as well as Pelicans. Make sure you climb the tower with your camera to get the most memorable memory of your visit! Bars: The main lobby bar (open 24 hrs) is chalked full of premium inclusions that surprise and delight! (20 year Santiago Rum). The newest addition is th3 (unnamed as of yet) cigar bar where you can enjoy a cigar and premium drink in the glassed in air conditioned space. The pool bar serves both the main pool and side pool, but only the side pool has a swim up bar. The pool bar also serves as the snack bar and serves hot snacks 24 hrs a day. The beach bar (open until 4pm) means you'll never have to walk very far for your favourite libation. and lastly the bar on the western end of the grounds is a great place to go to enjoy a game of pool. Restaurants: Las Palmeras (The Buffet) serves 3 times daily. The fare offered is pretty standard for the region. Lots of fish, pork, legumes and vegetables. The non finicky eater should have no trouble at all finding something to satisfy here. Bonitas (the italian restaurant) is open for lunch without reservation and is a good spot for pizza. Dinners are by reservation only and the menu is chalk full of pastas, chicken dishes and seafood. The international is open for dinner by reservation only and serves a variety of dishes. French, North American, European etc. Beach Barbecue. Located beside the beach bar the barbecue is open for lunch and the meal is different daily, but can be virtually anything....beef, chicken, scampi, snapper. Both a la carte restaurants share the same wine list (not included) which is bound to have something for everyone. good selection of whites, reds and champagnes. Rooms; Rooms are appointed in the style of the day. Keeping in mind that Melia Cayo Guillermo has been open for 14 years. The rooms are bright. on both occasions we stayed on the third floor. This is a bit of a double edged sword. The good part is the third floor offers the best views of both the ocean and the mangroves opposite the hotel. The down side is there is no elevator service to be had. Something to consider if climbing stairs is a problem for you. That being said there is porter service to get your baggage up there so not to worry if you pack heavy. Rooms are equipped with either one king sized bed or two double beds pushed together. You wont know until you get into the room. all rooms have their own balcony, some of which have plant boxes on them. That means more traffic through your room as the gardeners do tend the boxes. something to consider if you want to minimize the amount of coming and going to your room. There is air conditioning in all rooms but there are known maintenance issues with some of them. Again, you wont know until you reach your room. bathrooms are standard with toilet, bidet, tub and shower. The vanity sink is large enough and comes with make up mirror and built in hair dryer. closets are ample and have more than enough hangars to hang any formal wear you might need to hang. There is also a iron with board located within. The closet is also the location of the small safe included with your room. I cannot stress this enough! Lock up your valuables! It's just good travel sense. Across from the closet is the mini fridge. inside you'll find one each of cuban cola, orange, lemon lime pops, one can of Buccanero and one can of Cristal (cuban beers) as well as one 1.5 liter bottle of water all of which are restocked daily. Water and ice served at all the bars and restaurants is bottled so even though you only get one bottle in your room, clean water is always available. Grounds: The grounds in and around the resort are beautiful. the lawns are well groomed and all the palm trees are pruned as needed. It's a nice treat to be offered a coconut from one of the groundskeepers. A peso or two is always appreciated. The beach is groomed by tractor once a day. The largest detractor from the beauty of this place is the garbage just tossed by other visitors. Especially on the beach. Please be respectful and help keep Melia Cayo Guillermo beautiful by picking up after yourself. Do take some time when you're familiarizing yourself to take in the beauty of the palms and local wildlife. The resort is full of blackbirds, and geckos. Don't miss the resident peacocks, and watch for the local Cuban Black hawk that hangs out on the pool bar. Ask the staff for a piece of ham and a fork and see it snatch the meat from your hand. We noticed a small number of feral cats (two) but for the most part they were skittish and avoided us. Throughout the week just off the boardwalk to the beach you'll find local artisans hocking their wares. it's a nice alternative the the hotels gift shop on some items because you can barter the price. If you've never bartered before, try it. It's exciting and fun. Entertainment: There are various poolside activities daily. these can be volleyball, lazy darts, lazy dice, coconut races and other silly games. There's always a prize. My wife won a locally made bracelet and I won a bottle of rum! Down by the beach there are exercise classes and beach volleyball. The hotel offers archery and air rifle shooting daily. Most nights on the patio just outside the main lobby bar there are musicians and singers. We even saw a magic show. Around 9:30 nightly there are theme shows made up of interpretive dance and lip sync. Each night is a different theme and the dancers are wonderfully talented. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT MISS the weekly performance of the Aquatic Ballet. this show is stunning! Bringing your kids? No problem. The entertainment team has children's activities day and evening and there is even childcare available. While Cayo Guillermo and the larger Cayo Coco are not part of the main island of Cuba, both are ideal for those who are looking for a real "get away". The only infrastructure there is hotels and tourism related businesses. There really is no reason to leave the Melia unless you want to. When we visited the first time we made friends friends with a couple of the staff. It's people like Mikael, Serguey, Rolando, and Carmen that made us want to go back. Indeed, there are newer and larger hotels, but do you think in a 2000 room hotel that anyone is going to remember you? Hemingway Called it his favourite fishing spot. I call it my home away from home.

“Great Beach, Good time at MCG ”
This was our 1st time at the Melia Cayo Guillermo and I?m sure if the opportunity comes up again, we?ll return. The weather was mostly sunny and hot, with only 10 minutes of rain once at lunch. The resort itself felt very pleasant with everything nearby without feeling crowded. For context we are retired empty nesters, in our early 60?s and have enjoyed many trips to Cuba, all at various AI?s. This trip was from Sept 26th to Oct 3rd 2014. Sept tends to be quieter than most months and so the resort was only about 30% to 40% full. As we don?t really like crowds or lots of partying this was not a problem for us. Check in was a bit time consuming and probably felt worse than it really was due to how late we arrived (around 11pm) however the front staff took the time needed to go through everything. As this resort is compact we were able to find our room quite easily without needing a bellboy. The pool bar was available for a late snack where we met some really nice people. We requested a king bed on an upper level and the room we got was perfect. Nice comfortable room with quiet air conditioning, very hot water and good water pressure and centrally located. While the room is a bit dated, the maid kept it tidy and the towel art was always a treat to see. We did unfortunately have to change our room the last night as the air conditioning failed during the day and while it was repaired it was just too hot to remain. Recommend keeping customer service informed if you have any issues brewing. We did and when it became obvious we had to move customer service advised the front desk and we were in our new room within an hour. Both the front desk staff and customer service were great. The beach is the crowning jewel; powder soft white sand, no rocks and an amazing turquoise blue-green and the water in Sept is warm. You can (and we did) spend hours in the water. If you like to snorkel, under the pier is a great place to start. We also paid the Hobby Cat guys to take us further out to the reef (15 CUC each) and got to see some interesting fish there as well. We also took the bus to Pilar Beach (5 CUC all day ride each). There were two days when the water was like glass and one of those days was when we went to Pilar Beach. It?s definitely a gem and worth the visit. You do have to pay for everything while there (loungers 2cuc, Lunch) but we had a great day and enjoy a very good lunch. The lobster was 15cuc and the fish lunch 6.50; both were tasty. The snorkeling was good on the left hand side, near the headland (like a fish nursery). You could have also paid to go snorkeling out to the nearby island for an hour but at 25 CUC each I thought it was a bit much. We are not fussy eaters and did not go hungry. The food was decent with good variety but a bit light on the fresh fruit. There were cook stations for pasta, meat, fish and desert, however I mostly ate from the buffet and had more than enough. I did have the sea bass cooked for me one night and it was great. My wife loved the shrimp cooked for her one night and on a few nights she enjoyed the pasta. For lunches we tended to eat at the Ranchon where I had fish every day and loved it. Tasty chicken and pork was also available. There were two a la carts available while we were there, The Italian and The International. We enjoyed both but would recommend the beef filet at the International. It was the best I ever had in Cuba and it would rival any restaurant back home. In all areas, the staff was pleasant and provided friendly service whether you tipped or not. However we do know tipping was appreciated. Every evening we enjoyed local entertainment outside the main lobby bar, usually from 8:30 to 9:30 (prior to the evening show). Of the evening shows we did get a chance to see one (we?re not late night people) and found it quite entertaining. On another note, even though the resort sprayed for mosquitoes twice daily I would still recommend bringing your mosquitoes spray as we still needed that little extra. One of the other perks you get when you stay at this Melia is the ability to visit the other Melia?s or Sol for a day. While the weather was too nice to do lots of exploring we did visit the Sol next door for a day and had an enjoyable visit and a great lunch at their buffet. This was easily arranged at the front desk. Also don?t forget to visit Serguey in the new Cigar Lounge. It?s a nice air condition spot to enjoy a great cigar and a top shelf drink. Lastly, if you look up my channel on YouTube (MrJarArt) I?ll be posting a few videos of this resort soon and add to my collection of other Cuban resorts we?ve been to.

“Great holiday but got eaten alive by sand flies! ”
This was our first time staying at this resort. The staff were outstanding and very sincere. I have read other reviews about return guests getting preferential treatment. (These are V.I.P guests wearing the white wrist bands). I didn't find are service was lacking at all because we did not have a white band. I simply think that these return guests establish friendships and relationships with the staff. Even in my 1 week stay, I established many great relationships with staff because they are all so wonderful! The food was great for Cuba. The Italian restaurant was amazing! And the buffet dinner had theme nights like sushi night and taco night! The only bad thing I have to say is the sand flies were horrible. The property itself was infested. I got killed my first night, while sitting outside of the lobby watching the entertainment. I wasn't the only one. Everyone was complaining! And bug spray didn't ward these bugger's off. After one week of being there, I am literally covered in these bites. I've been back almost 1 week and still dealing with them. The management was aware of the problem and would bug bomb the outdoor property twice daily. But it didn't seem to help. By the end of the week I didn't even want to go outside at night! Also the property faces a large swamp area which I am sure contributed to the problem. We have talked to some of the guests that have been to this resort before and they say it has never been a problem before. Everyone's guess was that a wet September brought on a buggy October. If it wasn't for this I would recommend and return here.

      “Great stay ”
I traveled between Sept 26- Oct 2 ,2014 with a group of 25 friends. The grounds are well maintained and the beach is beautiful. Pool is very clean but liner needs to be replaced.Rooms are pleasant and clean but bathrooms need to be updated, specifically the bath tubs. Bars offer wide selections of international drinks which worked in my group's favour. Nothing to complain about in regards to the food but i am not a picky eater. Mary, at customer service, was very professional when dealing with customers. The entertainment team were very friendly and outgoing, so is the rest of the hotel staff. One person that made my trip very memorable was Daniel Herranz, the professional guitar player. He is a very talented guitar player who i enjoyed listening to very much. After one of his shows, my friends spoke to him and asked if he'd be willing to play at my 30th wedding anniversary. Although he wasn't scheduled to play that night at the hotel, he found the time to perform at our special dinner. It was a great surprise and I would highly recommend hiring him for any special occasion (danielguitar@nauta.cu or (53) 5300-7986). It was a fun trip.

We have just returned from our third trip to this hotel and highly recommend it to anyone considering either getting married or renewing their vows.Mary the wedding co-ordinater is amazing along with Maikel the client services manager at organising a symbolic ceremony on our wedding anniversary to renew our vows. There was 6 in our party. we arrived and had personal check in service and given spacious rooms next to each other overlooking the pool, with large terrace and a gift of cuban rum in all.we met with mary again the following day to choose exactly what cake, bouquets, buttonhole, music, etc we would like and left it in her capable hands. The day before she explained how everything would proceed, organised my hair to be styled and a romantic lobster dinner for 2 at the international restaurant the day after the ceremony as we were having the wedding breakfast at the Italian that evening.I had 3 cuban bridesmaids who also worked at the hotel and we had got to know very well on our previous visits. The day itself was absolutely perfect and completely stress free. The photographer was excellent and we actually bought additional pictures as it was impossible to choose the amount included in the package as they were all amazing. The wedding breakfast was excellent and prompt. We then watched the evening show and my daughter surprised us by arranging our first dance with the entertainment staff who were only too happy to oblige.on arriving back to our room we found it had been decorated with petals, flowers, heart shaped pillows, chocolates and champagne, the perfect end to a perfect day!We were so looked after by all the staff with special thanks to Erosmiedes, Osmielki,Adelma my bridesmaids who looked beautiful,Jimmy and the entertainment staff,my friends rolando,Didier, Tommy, yunia,Laine, yanial,Edel, Kenia, domingo and Carlos my favourite pancake chef along with many more who's names I can't quite remember but all contributed to making our stay so wonderful. see you all next year. xx

      “Highly recommend. ”
We travelled to the melia on Oct 3rd to the 8th, 2014. This was our 5th trip to Cuba but our first to this resort. This is by far our favourite resort. A huge thank you to Edel and Maiyelena in the buffet restuarant. They made us feel so welcome and always took very good care of us. If we needed a thing they were always helping. They made our trip to from great to amazing. As well as Carlos. If you see him doing the flambé bananas you need to try them, he does an amazing job. Gali in kids club is so great win the kids. I took my eight year with us and she is really shy. She loves to participate but has a hard time going with people she does not know. Gali took her one day and all she talks about is the fun they had. She went the next day too and did a play with them. She can not wait to go back and see her again. The rooms are super clean, we never had an issue with anything in the rooms. They are Cuban rooms. The beach is always clean and is big. You can wade out forever and still touch. I never had to worry about my daughter playing in the water. The food was the best I've had in Cuba. Lots of choices, great quality. We did lose water one day for like maybe two hours. We asked at the reception they were super nice and had it fixed in no time. We plan on making this an annual trip, can not wait to return. Met some amazing friends, both staff and guests. Thanks Melia for making our holiday so wonderful!

      “Lovely holiday! ”
This is a cracking little hotel! Don't go with any high expectations and you'll have a lovely relaxing time and you'll so want to be back. The highlight for us was the staff. We thought the reviews on here that we had read beforehand were exaggerations but we were proved wrong. The stand out for us was juliette in the buffet. Never was our wine empty and her effortless personality and happiness blew us away. All the staff are wonderful and work such long hours too. Others to mention are Gleibys, Darian, Maykiel, Carlos lifeguard, everyone on the pool bar, Judith, the morning staff in the Lobby bar, the pasta chef, the young man who works in El Viejo y el Mar. I could go on and on. The animation team are all also fantastic! Ok the rooms could do with a revamp but you have to remember this is cuba. If you are after total luxury then I would look elsewhere and pay more as you will be disappointed. HIGHLIGHTS 24 hr lobby and snack bar. We don?t even drink a lot so for us it was the lovely coffees in the morning. At night, you could even drink the 20 year old Santiago de Cuba rum which was lovely and very unexpected as usually all inclusive has certain restrictions. Bear in mind a bottle of this stuff will set you back around 180 pesos which is about £120! The beach. Wow. It's so beautiful you can't believe you're actually there. As we went in October, often the beach was choppy but we got a few good days of low tide and the picture postcard look of the beach and sea which we were desperate to see. I imagine if you go in the summer months it is like that every day. Pilar beach - amazing! You can get a trip there and back either by shared bus or taxi on your own and both are 10 cuc. Highly recommended. Sun loungers are 2 cuc each. They are building a 5 star hotel here which will be opening soon. Snorkelling off the hotel pier. We would recommend that you take your own snorkel gear. The dive centre does let you hire but everyday we got given different excuses and even then you are only allowed 30 minutes use. It is easier to bring your own. Free catamarans and pedalos and kayaks. Lunch at El Viejo y el Mar. Wonderful steak, chicken, ribs etc. This place is a lovely little restaurant open between 1 - 4. We often felt it would be good to have this place open in the evening as the sea view was great. The night-time shows in particular the amazing Aquatic Ballet. You just have to see this for yourself. You?d pay good money to see a show like this in the UK. We also loved the beach party. The lobster you can pay extra for. 15 pesos if I remember correct and this was huge! The quietness of the resort. Seemed to only be half full in the first week. Few large wedding parties in week 2 but still felt quiet. The 'Now Cuba' trip where you visit local towns including Moron and you also see a crocodile farm. You also go on a speedboat on this trip too. It's a very long day but well worth it. I have to admit the trip to the towns was a real eye opener and very humbling. It makes you appreciate what you have at home and the silly things we stress about. We also had an excellent catamaran trip and couldn't have been luckier with the weather. The towel hut also lets you hire out fishing rods for 5 cuc for the whole day. Tip one of the chefs in the restaurants and take some freshly cooked bait with you. If you like fishing, this is the resort for you! NEGATIVES The Beach bar closing at 4. I understand it's low season though so this could be the case. However it did seem odd that the sun didn?t set until nearly 7pm yet this closed. You didn?t have to go far though for a drink as the pool bar stayed open 24 hours. It was just a little far if you were sunbathing on the end of the pier but the exercise was good! The meat guy in the buffet who used the same tongs for raw and cooked meat. There were time where we would refuse to eat what he had cooked as we'd rather be safe than sorry and we went back to the buffet to choose something else to eat. I understood he had previously been told too but a few days later this started again. Also some of the chicken that he cooked on the grill was actually raw when you cut into it so just be careful what you eat and you will be fine. No upset tummies to report. There was no water at all on our first day for a few hours. This was fixed soon enough though but I did worry about the hygiene aspect, especially as the toilets wouldn't flush. You get where I'm coming from! The dive centre that let you hire catamarans, etc gave different versions of stories each time we tried to windsurf. The first time we asked we were told that we could have a free lesson but then lost track of time round the pool so we never went. Every other time we were told no by different people (its for professionals, it's too difficult, etc). We did complain and got told it?s a separate company and not linked to the hotel. In the end we just couldn't be bothered to go back down each day and try to ask. It was easier to just sunbathe and snorkel! Sand flies - got bitten to death round the pool and beach. Sunbathed off the end of the jetty and this seemed ok. No amount of mozzy spray protected you (they seem immune to it) so if you go, see if they do a special sand fly spray on the internet or something similar! You will DEFINITELY need it. It is worth noting here that you cannot get medicines and bug spray so take plenty! Sun cream in the shop is very expensive too. We went armed with the usual stuff - Immodium, paracetamol, laxatives, the lot! Some cocktails tasted different depending on which bar you got them from and some we couldn?t drink as we just didn?t like the taste. The best cocktails were in the lobby bar where you got a proper glass. Lack of air con in the disco and lobby bar. Unbearable at times. All in all an absolutely lovely holiday and a fantastic hotel. It's easy to see why the same people return here again and again. Admittedly in our first week we did compare it to Mexico but don't go expecting much and you'll come away relaxed, tanned (it was roasting!) and with some great memories. Will definitely return but we would like to combine it with a half and half holiday to include havana as sadly the trip there would have been 3 days out of our holiday and cost too much. We'll be back one day!!

“First Time, but not the last! ”
This was my first time to staying at this lovely resort. The people are amazing which is what always brings us back to Cuba to begin with but in particular the staff are like family welcoming you into their homes! Our room was clean and bright on the 3rd floor with a nice view of the path. The grounds are gorgeous and keep immaculate. In the evening the paths are well lit and so pretty! The entertainment was great every evening from the live bands to the in-house dancers. This time of year seems to include mosquito's and no-see-ems so bring on the bug spray. The beach is breathtaking, powder white sand with crystal clear water and a peer to enjoy. There is a kids club has been run by the same staff for the 14 years and can't say enough about how much fun my daughter had, lots of activities and excursions. It's no wonder people have returned 28 times! I can't wait to go back!

From the time we checked in to the time we left we had fun , good food & drink & fantastic service . Beautiful well kept gardens surround the rooms, which are cool & spacious & ours was cleaned daily to a high standard , the mini bar is stocked every day with beer soft drinks & water there is also a safe which is free of charge . All restaurants have a great variety of good quality tasty food & the waiter service is exceptional. The bars have a fantastic selection of cocktails & drinks to choose from all served by a great team of professional barmen. The beach is amazing its lined with umbrellas to give you shade & is good for children as water stays shallow & is patrolled daily by lifeguards . There is a pier where you can walk down or fish off which we did a lot of & caught some nice fish . You will be kept entertained around the pool & on the beach during the day & on the patio & stage at night , there's something for everyone bingo darts aerobics Aqua ballet show rock band . All the entertainers do a great job , they really want the guests to enjoy themselves . You can't miss Jimmy you'll probably hear him before you see him ! Just when you think the Melia couldn't get any better the management & staff do something to improve it , there is now an air conditioned cigar bar where when you buy a cigar you can sit & smoke & have premium drinks served by Serguay who has a wealth of knowledge about cigars . There is also a new beer bar opening soon which will serve national & International bottled beers on an all inclusive basis , not many all inc hotels offer these sort of options . If you want great service ,good entertainment ,beautiful beach , good value for money visit the Melia you won't be disappointed we never are . Many thanks to all our Cuban family ( too many to individually mention ) who again made our holiday wonderful, see you all again December . Alan & Cheryl

“My new favorite hotel in Cuba ”
I've been to Cuba so many times I can't even count. But this was by far my best experience. I was there by myself from Oct. 3rd to 10th, 2014. Loved the Melia, and all the staff. Naturally some people stand out: Judith Alfonso at Reception, Yugardy Rabi and Ariannys Himelys Delgado in Animation, Gleibys Rodriguez Fernandez the most beautiful and best dancer, Eromaidis Segura Suàrez, best waitress , and Jesus and Justo best waiters. And Mayumi my maid was the best as well! Can't wait to go back! The hotel is small enough to be cozy, but has interesting things not seen at other hotels. The cleanliness was condition of the rooms and the hotel in general where impressive. And for a snorkeling lover like me, the quantity and diversity of fish at the hotel pier was the best surprise ever!

“Another week in paradise :-) ”
Just got back from another wonderful visit to the MCG. It was great to be greeted so warmly by the staff at reception. Maria, Linet and Norge always smiling and willing to provide excellent service. As expected our room was not available until 4 o'clock, but no worries for us we always pack a small carry on with necessities for the day. I know people complain when their room is not ready when they arrive but these are the same people arguing with reception staff about late check-out. You can't have it both ways! Room ready when you arrive at noon and late check-out?? We quickly went off the to buffet where we were warmly welcomed by old friends Yaneris, Milsa, Maylana and Eidel and of course Madeline, how does she remember how everyone likes their eggs?????????? Everyone working in the buffet is wonderful but these are special friends. We were so pleased that we had the room we requested, thank you to Carmen and Linet. This is our favorite location in the hotel :-) As always our maid Shuly did a terrific job cleaning up after us. We have never had an issue or complaint with regards to the cleanliness of our room and this time was no different. Lovely to see all our old friends at the lobby bar, Roberto, Luis Enrique, Maylina, Arlent, missed seeing dear Edgar, hope he is feeling better and will return to work soon. Our good friend Serguey is now working in the new cigar bar. My husband loved to sit in there, smoke a cigar, have a glass of rum and chat with Serquey. If you go to the hotel you must visit the new cigar bar, Serguey really knows about cigars and will help you find the right one for you. Mary in customer service is a lovely girl who will do anything to make your trip perfect. I arrived with a terrible cough and cold and she went out of her way to ensure that I had extra water everyday. Greatly appreciated. Jose Manuel the ultimate professional it was nice to see you in both The International and the Italian, it meant we got to spend a bit more time with you. The beach continues to be the highlight for me but this time there was no wind which made the conditions perfect for the sand fleas. Those little buggers seem resistant to all forms of sprays so my advice is, if you are like me and attract biting insects no matter where you go, sit down close to the water or on the pier on the calm days and you won't get bitten. Because I attract these insects even at home I am always prepared with benedryl and calamine lotion. Make sure you bring some with you because you won't be able to get it at the resort. The pool and surrounding areas are lovely, and also the best place to meet other guests. Each time we go we meet other guests, and always stay in touch, this time was no different. Missed seeing Ana at the pool bar but the lovely Barbara was there ready to make any drink you wished and serving up the amazing Cuban ice cream. Although we don't really participate in any of the games or animations, we see lots of other guests enjoying themselves with these activities so if you enjoy these things you will have a great time with the MCG animation staff. Jimmy is non stop entertainment and we cannot say enough good things about the lovely Gali. Finally I want to say the MCG is a lovely, small quiet family place where you can relax, enjoy the beach, the pool and the consistent good and personal service by all the staff. If you like the 5 star Sandals or Beaches style resorts this is not the right place for you. I love this place and feel at home and relaxed when I am there, I know that it needs some repairs and refurbishment, but this doesn't matter to me. My room is kept clean, my towels are changed daily, I can always find something I like to eat, the beach is amazing, and the pool is lovely. But, what makes this resort stand out is the staff!!!! You will never travel anywhere and find such attentive, kind, honest and caring staff. I lost something very valuable while at the resort last week and it was turned in by a staff member within minutes of me losing it. I must admit I was a little panicked but I knew that if someone from the hotel found it I would get it back and this was the case. Looking forward to my next visit in April.

      “Paradise revisited. ”
We have just returned today from this Hotel and had such a lovely time I wish we where back there. Firstly I must say that we have visited many places in the world and have never returned to any Hotel except for this one. We have now visited four times and can not think of any where else to spend our precious holiday time. I think in previous reviews all aspects of this Hotel have been covered, for me the main features are the wonderful beach and the wonderful staff who treat you like a family member. This trip to the Melia Cayo Guillermo I have found the food to have greatly improved, both in quality and also variety and presentation. On the down side I did have problems in the Italian restaurant because of slow service. On two occasions I had to wait a long time to be served and on one occasion my food was cold. Even when my food was warmed up in microwave it was still cold. This was a disappointment as this was my last night and I ended up with a toastie in the pool bar. Also we could not get french frys in the pool bar ( which is the main 24 hour snack bar), because fryer was broken, come on Management sort it out Although this seems like a criticism, it is only meant to help the manager to improve on this problem which I think is shortage of staff around peak time. I spoke to the manager and he ensured me he would sort out. I must also say that the manager is well liked by the staff and nearly all staff I have spoken to regard him with the greatest of respect, so I have every faith he will look at this and sort out resulting in a well run Italian restaurant and happy staff. I would say all staff without exception are friendly and hard working, but I give a special thankyou to Tommy in the Pool bar, Didia in the main bar, Carlos (towels), Denise and Barbara pool bar and of course Jimmy who steals the show. In short any one reading this go to this Hotel; experience and enjoy, you will not regret and I know for sure you will return again. I may even see you there because we are going back again to a place we love.

“Another great week at Melia Cayo Guillermo! ”
This was our second trip to MCG and they did not disappoint! The beach is obviously amazing and is full of aquatic wonders. Our first day we saw three stingrays and a starfish, so cool! The rooms are great, always clean and cool. The maid service do an excellent job and I was always excited to see what artistic creation was awaiting with out blankets, towels and curtains. The food is delicious, the Italian is definitely our favourite, we had amazing beef in the International restaurant too. The buffet is good, always a wide selection, we were pleasantly surprised with a sushi spread one of the evenings. The staff at this resort are second to none. Jimmy is amazing, he played a big part in our decision to return to this resort rather than try something new. He always makes sure we are taken care of and of course likes to get us up and in the action with the activities! Sergai (sp?) in the Cigar Bar is definitely worth a visit as well. Any questions we had about Cuba, cigars, things to do, places to see, etc. he was always very helpful. The lobby bar staff were great too, never letting us leave our seats to get our own drinks, always making sure we had everything we needed. Barbara and Tommy at the pool bar- awesome. A hawk came flying down to the area and Tommy gave him some meat and it was so cool to see this majestic bird up close for so long. Thanks Tommy! Lastly , the dancers. AMAZING. The aquatic ballet was sensational, we tried to recreate it, but failed miserably, lol. The shows in the theatre are so good, I love that there is so much crowd interaction and we got to get up and dance with such a talented cast of dancers. Gerardo went out of his way to spend time with us and show us step by step the dance that happens at the end of the shows. We finally got it by the end of the week! Sorry that was a little long-winded, but I LOVE this resort. We will be back. Oh. and the wifi is paid but really fast! I was really impressed. It was $4.50CUC/hour but you can log in and out as you please.

We have just returned from another vacation at the Melia. I have to say that we have been there a few times now and have never been disappointed. The resort is absolutely stunning and the staff are amazing. Just to name a few people, Carmin is one of the Managers & Mari at the customer service department (also wedding planner) if you need anything taken care of these are your ladies. If you love food this is also the place to stay the chefs Kiki,Chacon & Drsuel blow us away, each meal gets better and better as the week goes on. If you like your variety of drinks Barbara, Abel, Lazaro can whip up just about anything !. There is always something going on at the hotel whether it be entertainment for the kids with Gali and a few other lovely ladies and games for the big kids with Jimmy there is never a dull moment. The beach is very safe and there is always life guards Rocky and Rolli on duty from 7:30 am until 4:00 pm. And don't hesitate to ask Rocky to take you snorkeling off the peir its an experience you will never forget. Just a word of advice, If you decide to stay on the beach for the day make sure you bring bug spray as the noseeums are a bit bothersome to a few people. There are many excursions and one of them is the scuba diving, My husband had a lesson in the pool with Johnny and loved it. This is our number one place to go in Cuba and our home away from home. We have met some amazing people who have become our family.

This is an excellent resort. The people are great. Friendly, helpful and trustworthy. The grounds are well maintained. The beach is beautiful. Pool is clean. Rooms are comfortable. Bars offer very wide selections of local and international drinks. New enclosed cigar lounge offers premium drinks free of charge with the purchase of single cigars a reasonable prices. Food selection, taste and quality is very good for Cuba. The a la carte restaurants had excellent meals. We attended a private repeat guest lobster dinner with over 35 people and at the table there were a total of 122 visits among us. This speaks volumes about this resort. 10/10 for my family and I. You won't be disappointed if you have reasonable expectations for how little you pay.

“Best Feature ~~ Go For The Beach”
7th time to Cuba and won't be the last. We look for resorts with good beach reviews and the beach at MCG does not disappoint. By far the best part of the resort. Staff - very friendly - 5 stars Entertainment - Live entertainment at the lobby in the evening a great touch, very enjoyable. Resort - very rundown, needs some TLC. Some of the walkways to the beach are in disrepair. Hopefully repairs will be completed during slow season. Resort was supposedly only 1/2 full which would explain why we felt the food/drinks were less than we were used to. We don't go for the food and are very careful in our food choices. The drinks at all the bars were very disappointing, same drink never tasted the same and the margaritas were terrible. This is the first resort where we had trouble figuring out what to drink. Italian restaurant was very good, guitar player added a nice touch! Buffet - food choices probably rate a 3.5 star at best. The 2nd day of our vacation, our personal towels were stolen at the beach and we reported to Mary (customer service rep). She was very professional but of course the towels were not found. We suspect that the towels were stolen by guests and not staff. Midweek we were asked by Mary to move to another room since there were renovations taking place in the buffet restaurant and the noise could keep us up at night. We switched rooms and we were told that staff would move our large luggage. We moved our carry-ons and then waited for the rest of our luggage. In the end we moved it ourselves so that we could continue on with our evening. I understand that there are many repeat visitors to this resort, we prefer to try new places and areas. Some resorts we have been tempted to return to but unfortunately the MCG does not fall into that category. We have been to resorts where the management team is present and very visible, speaking with guests and thanking guests for visiting. We found the management team at MCG did not compare. Perhaps it was the fact that it was very slow at the resort but it really shouldn't matter what time of year you travel.

My wife and I recently returned to MCG for our 5th visit to this wonderful vacation spot. Having travelled to a number of different resorts throughout Cuba, we have made the MCG our "home away from home"! It all starts with the staff. Linet and her colleagues at reception took exceptional care of our needs and went out of their way to ensure that our entire stay was fantastic. Serguay and his colleagues at the lobby bar were once again extremely efficient, friendly and conversational. Service at the buffet, Italian and International restaurants was incredibly attentive with a wide variety of quality food to choose from. The beach is to die for! Wide and clean, this beach ranks #1 in our books for Cuba period! We spent many hours every day walking along this pristine beach and enjoying the warm tranquil waters. The grounds are immaculate and well maintained on a regular basis. Our room was very comfortable and clean. Our sincere congratulations go out to Michael, Linet and the entire staff at MCG for once again having made our latest visit a memorable one. Without a doubt, we will be returning shortly at this wonderful paradise "home away from home"! Jeff and Joanne Montreal, Canada

      “Simply Stunning ”
Stayed 27th August ? 3 September 2014 Transferred to this hotel from Memories Flamenco in Cayo Coco. This is the only 5 star resort in the area. First Impressions - Stunning. This hotel is I believe around 14 years old and whilst some areas are a little tired, it is very well maintained and looked after. The entrance is exactly what you would expect, bright, airy and welcoming. The reception staff are welcoming, professional and efficient, issuing your all inclusive wrist bands so you can start using the facilities immediately despite our room not being ready. We used the opportunity to look around the resort and head to the beach. The whole resort is well laid out, spacious with attractive gardens and water features and pretty little bridges that take you from one side to the other. The walkways around the resort are by lovely pathways and to the beach wooden walkways. At the start of the beach you are immediately greeted with a fantastic view of the very long pier type structure (Hemminways) which stretches a long way out and a watch tower, there are lovely thatched sheltered areas with sunbeds on the pier and also benched seating along each side. To the left and right of the pier is the absolutely stunning beach. The beach is cleaned every single day by the guys clearing away the sea weed washed in from the tide coming in. The water is shallow for a good way out and never really gets that deep. When the tied is out, there is a lovely sand bank to walk along or as we did, pass the time with a bit of sand art! The beach is monitored everyday by five life guards and one in particular springs to mind called Sammy, he will really look after you and also advise you on snorkelling trips that can be taken from the hotel for a lot less than you would pay through your tour operator! Now for a bit of specific detail...... The rooms -- we had a standard room for two adults and one child. The beds are huge and comfortable. Whilst the room itself is not huge, it never felt cramped. The room was decorated in a "shabby chic" style, was bright and airy and the air conditioning works a treat without being over poweringly loud. The room had a nice bathroom, an over bath shower and a separate sink area and dressing area, with a fridge that was stocked with soft drinks, beer, and water. There is also a coffee machine, but no coffee, although I feel sure if we had of asked, we would have got it. There is also a great TV in the room, a good size and had some good channels..(only used for the hour or so when getting ready for dinner!) There is also a safe in this area which is free and operated with your room card. We found only one of our room cards would operate the safe. Of course, not every thing is perfect and we had two small problems, one with the shower holder the first evening, and it was sorted out promptly the next day. Later in the week, we had a further problem with a leak from what we think was the air conditioning, and part of the panelled ceiling was coming down, this was attended to within minutes of us reporting it. All in all the staff on both occasions were fast, efficient and tidy. The Pool/s - there is essentially one main pool that has 3 separate sections, a very shallow part for the babies and toddlers, the main section with both shallow and deeper sections and then the pool bar area, which had a stunning waterfall over the bar area, which looks spectacular at night time lit up in blue. The pool/s are cleaned every single day. If we had to criticise anything, it would be the size of the pool/s which seem small for the size of the resort. There are plenty of sun beds around the pool, but it does get busy and the sometimes can feel a little cramped. There are some beautiful shaded canopy areas and other thatched sun shades which go very quickly. Top Tip, get your towels out for around 7am! Adjacent to the pool is the snack bar, serving toasties, burgers and beverages, nice area to sit and chill. The music around the pool is kept to a reasonable level and at no point do you feel like you are been deafened. The Entertainment staff get the kids and adults participating in activities but at no time do you feel under pressure to take part. The beach.....is just stunning, as described in the earlier paragraphs above. The same situation with the sun beds applies though, when the hotel is busy, these go very quickly. Main Buffet Restaurant....at all times, is furnished with table cloths and full silver service...and is air conditioned. The food choice is good, and there is the usual fresh pizza and fresh pasta sections, and a dedicated fish section and also a carvery, plus the usual selection of a variety of other foods. Both the pizza and pasta are exceptionally good. Fresh bread every day. The waiting staff are attentive and once they get to know your drink of choice, you rarely have to ask for the top up, it just appears! Italian Restaurant Bonasi, located just back from the pool side....lovely, a bright airy clean environment with a great choice of colour scheme, a limited choice of food, but what they have is very good and is all freshly cooked to order. Again fab service by the waiting staff. The size of the wine glasses are huge! The Ranch restaurant adjacent to the beach, this wasn't open on an evening. We ate there only one lunch time. Make sure you look up at the stunning ceiling, its not air conditioned but you benefit from the lovely sea breeze. Food good, limited choice. Beach grill and bar. Two huts with a covered seating area adjacent to the ranch restaurant and just off the beach. We didn't eat there but the food was freshly cooked every day, fish, chicken, pork, burger, and lobster (lobster has an extra cost). Sometimes they have great bands playing at lunchtime. There was a small market every day we were there located adjacent to the wooden walkway to the beach, selling locally made artifacts, which were all very reasonably priced. Main lobby bar - small but perfectly formed with a stunning outdoor seating area shaded by palm trees. Fast efficient service by all the waiting staff at this bar, serving some fabulous cocktails. Evening Entertainment - in addition to the usual evening entertainment which was exceptional, there was always a singer a guitarist or band on at the lobby bar outdoor area. At all times, the entertainment was good. All in all this resort is first class and we only wish we had stayed here for the full two weeks. Enjoy!

Review about Melia Cayo Guillermo Hotel
      Excellent Excellent

      Excelent services
The Meliá Cayo Guillermo Hotel, on one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean region, is located in Jardines del Rey (King's Gardens), an archipelago north of eastern Ciego de Avila province. The hotel, which is an excellent place for weddings, honeymoons, events and incentives, is 20 kilometers from Cayo Coco's International Airport and 125 kilometers from Ciego de Avila's airport. For nature lovers, it is an excellent place where they can enjoy the beautiful views of mangrove swamps, the turquoise blue sea, majestic flamingos and the underwater world.
