“Too many customer service issues ”
As this was my 6th time to Cuba alone the usual gripes would not faze me. I was however fazed with the customer service received during our stay. I traveled with my husband and son September 6-13 to wonderful cuba. After a lengthy but well driven 90 minute minute bus ride to the hotel we were all set to check in to our upgraded, prepaid spa vip package. This is to include express check in. No such luck. We thought that's okay, we will wait the 45 minute line. Once served we did not get put into one of the blocks allotted (ocean room) nor into a room with a full bathroom. Needed as my little toddler doe not take showers yet he takes baths and the upgrade promised both. After an hour discussion with the front desk a room was magically found. We spent the week enjoying the picture perfect weather, the beautiful grounds and the expected Cuban buffets and a la cartes. We booked a spa service and with our upgraded package are warranted a 15% discount. No record on their account that we have this upgrade even though we are wearing the bracelets. A 20 minute phone call to customer service and finally this is adjusted. Perhaps the most disappointing was the kids club. We wanted to drop off our son there for an hour so we could have a couples massage and so we went to see the facility the day before and meet with the staff. As my son played at the playground the staff never once got up to interact with my son and after about 10 minutes one of the staff members called me over. I went over and she asked me to go and get her breakfast from the buffet. I'm sorry I am a kind hearted person but I just observed your lack of attention to my son and then I am going to go on my vacation and get you breakfast? Why this all upsets me so much is that I have been traveling to Cuba since 1998 and have been the advocate for how beautiful the people of Cuba are. To have this many issues in terms of customer service makes this resort impossible to return to.

      “Not a 5 Star! ”
Just returned from a week at Playa Cayo Santa Maria. 3 hours from landing in Santa Clara to the resort in Santa Maria. People are AWESOME and you feel very welcomed and safe. Beautiful resort layout, and GORGEOUS beach. Rooms were very nice and big and 220v/110v with the exception of mildew smelling sheets and pillows. Food was NOT good. Fruits and vegetables had no taste, fish and meats were questionable with most items available for all 3 meals 7 days a week. Specialty restaurants were ok, but didnt stand out. My biggest issue was with the BEACH RESTRICTIONS. 6 of 7 days EVERYONE was restricted to no more than 20 meters out from beach. Which amounted to being allowed to wade out to your waste and play in the surf. The BEST they will alow is 65m out into the water. They claim they are concerned with undertow, BUT its just isnt the case. I am a BIG SWIMMER and love to snorkel. I have all of my own scuba equipment but went out and bought some slip on fins just so I could spend the week there soaking up the sun and swimming and snorkeling. No such luck and you get the added bonus of listening to the life guards constantly blowing their whistles whenever they actually turn around and look at the swimmers, from flirting with the guests! Its a REAL SHAME because its the MOST BEAUTIFUL beach we have ever been to. As well, there are jelly fish and people were bitten, which makes a person want to wear a mask and snorkel even more, I was able to get a cab ride down the road to access a public beach between resorts and was able to snorkel a beautiful reef with lots of fish. It was just before entering Melia Beuno Vista. With all that said, if THEY would be honest and CLEARLY outline such serious beach restrictions on all of their promotional sources, people wouldn't waste their time and money.

“First time in an all inclusive resort... ”
I stayed at the hotel for 6 nights at the end of October/start of November 2014 with my partner. It was the first time I had ever stayed at an all inclusive resort and while the hotel was fine, I don't think I would repeat it, but that is personal preference rather than a reflection on the quality of the hotel. The hotel is spread across a large area of well maintained grounds with lots of trees and flowers. There is the main lobby with a bar and plenty of seating. In the evenings there is usually a decent band or a pianist. There is also a stage/entertainment area which has two shows a night. We only watched half a Michael Jackson tribute act which was as bizarre and kitschy as you can imagine but showcased some amazing dancing. There are 3 nice pools. The first is a large square one with a pool bar. It was always busy and quite rowdy but fun. The second pool is also a large square one but more chilled also with a nearby bar. The third is a long thin one which we spent most time at as it was quiet and also had a bar. They were all spotlessly clean and had plenty of chairs and sun loungers. The beach is lovely. Soft white sand, really long so you can have a nice walk and when we went, not very busy at all. It's not particularly wide so at peak times I can imagine it getting very full. There are lots of sun lounges, some with shady palm coverings. I think you are charged 2 pesos for them but the beach is clean and fine to lie on. The water was very clear and unexpectedly quite cool though that was refreshing when you had been lying in the sun. When we went it was quite windy so the sea was surprisingly rough - but only in a fun, jumping around way. They had red flags up but it wasn't half as bad as some places. If you are a decent swimmer it's fine and the sea floor is sandy and flat, with a very gentle slope. We were out quite far and still standing. The rooms are set in 3 story apartment blocks around the grounds. We had a ground floor one. It was clean and modern with comfy beds and a nice bathroom with a great rainfall shower. There was a small patio with a table and two chairs and also a fridge with cold drinks, and a tv. As we were a ground floor flat, we had a little trouble with red ants coming in but we made sure to shut the mesh screen onto the patio whenever we sat out there and it was fine. There was several eating options at the resort. A snack bar which was open 24 hours which served things like burgers, pizzas and hotdogs. It was average but made a change from the food in the main hall. A grill type bar which was only open at lunch time and that just did burgers and hotdogs and that was decent. Then 4 restaurants of different cuisines which you need to make reservations for. We tried the Italian which was okay. Then there was the main food hall which had a range of different food choices all of which was pretty dull and some of it was awful. The best of it was whatever could be cooked fresh there and then - like the pizza and pasta section and also the grilled meats. Obviously, mass catering in a resort is unlikely to be amazing. The bars were all fine. The ice cream bar was a nice treat. There is a small shop which sells souvenirs, flip flops, sun cream, cigarettes and snacks. There is also a money exchange kiosk. All the staff we met were friendly and helpful. The hotel offers several excursions and trips which we didn't book but they had a fair selection of things. If we had been there for longer we would have done the day trip to Trinidad which was 65 pesos. We went when it was relatively quiet but I imagine at peak season this places gets really busy and pretty rowdy. There were loads of jokes Canadians drinking killer concoctions of booze from their mini kegs! So in peak season, I can only imagine the atmosphere. This would be a great place to come with kids or a group of friends to swim, lie in the sun and get wasted for a week. For us, it was good that it was the off season as it was quieter and we got what we wanted which was a rest, some sun and some sea. However, if I was going again, I would choose a different resort which is smaller and maybe more geared to couples. All in all, I am not one for resorts or all inclusive places so I was never going to love this hotel. If they are your thing though, Hotel Playa Cayo Santa Maria would be a fine choice.

      “Great resort”
We just came back from the resort this Sunday. It is a very nice resort with nice beach, swimming pools, and bars. Food is Cuban standards so nothing special but you always can find something that you like. We travelled with small kids 4 and 6 year old. We were really happy with the kids club and Yaimara that worked there. She really took care and helped us a lot with our kids. We could enjoy ourselves with my husband and spend some time alone while she was watching/playing with our sons. Thank you very much Yaimara you are great.

“Beautiful beach and friendly staff ”
My husband and I recently returned from a one week stay November 12 - 19. The resort is well maintained and a very beautiful layout. It doesn't matter what condo building you are in as everything connects so well. I will never tire of the turquoise waters and white sand that is like silk. Although staff were friendly and helpful a few of the staff really stand out. Everyday we went to the snack bar and we were always greeted with a great smile and conversation with Lenney. She was always busy and working hard but to be remembered when we returned was special. Her English was very good and she helped with our very limited Spanish. Thank you Lenney! We were able to get reservations to the specialty restaurants with the wonderful help of Yanelis. She was professional and helped make my husbands last night great. His birthday was the next day 19th and it was nice to have our romantic dinner outside of the buffet. The rooms were clean and it was fun to see our blanket sculptures. This was a lovely spot but I was surprised at the amount of children. It is very family oriented and I might try an adult only vacation next time.

      “cant complain.....solid 4 star resort... ”
This is a very typical resort for Cuba....been to Cuba 4 times now and I can say.... this is the best of the 4 resorts I have been to. This is a 4 star.... NOT more but not less either..... The rooms were very nice... always clean and never had an issue with anything at all.....fridge was always full....well... 2 pop,2 beer and a large bottle of water. Only issue was a power outage for a few hrs but really no big deal. Always had hot water.... The beach....I was expecting more( from other reviews)....still it was a nice beach....waves can be a little rough.... Beach was clean and beach bar was good...they always helped you get a chair for ya....NEVER an issue getting a chair... always enough. The food....well... it is Cuba... you will never starve....basic... so it was just ok.... waiters were excellent...Mario....great guy... always smiling.... wait times for .... really depends on what time of day you go....low period... no issue....high volume.... a little wait but no big deal. The entertainment .... excellent ... they work very hard... and give a great performance ... only issue.... well... cabaret show....not made for young kids....my option. BUT for adults... no issue great show. over all... a good resort...this is a perfect resort if you just want to lie back and relax... not really much to do outside of the resort....this is basically a resort island ...

“Great Hotel for a Good Price ”
Just returned from the Playa Cayo and had a great time there. As usual there are good and bad parts, but we could not have chosen a better place to stay for the price we paid. First the good: - the beach: clear water, fine sand, and we loved being on higher ground. Others have complained about loud music so here is my take. if you enjoy watching the ocean while being packed together closely with lots of other people then you plunk yourself down in the first few loungers you find on the beach. And yes, there will be music there. But... take a walk further down. Many more loungers, friendlier life guards and what do you know: quietness! No music. Your choice! - life guards at the beach: friendly, nice, and help you clean off the loungers in the morning or if they know you a bit better, reserve you your favourite one. Get to know them, they are awesome! - the rooms were nice and cozy, a bit dirty in the beginning but nothing much to be said about it otherwise. We did not come to Cuba for the hotel room! - the pools were great. Lots of them, always room and just amazingly taken care of. Loved it! - Staff was great, especially the Customer Service Manager Mareyi, who we did not meet but who took care of room assignments and reservations without being asked to. - Drinks: this is the place to go if you like strong drinks. We had to always remind the staff to just give us a little bit of rum since we were lightweights. The Not-So-Good: - Our first stay in Cuba and as such we noticed the food is definitely not as good here as in other places. That is life however, and once again, we came for the beach, the pool and some good drinks. We had a great time and the food did not impact us. Be prepared for long lines at the buffet at peak times though, so your food will get cold in your plate. And the restaurant has a distinct fish smell when you enter. - when we arrived our room had a smoke smell. I went to Reception and got another room. this was a minor hiccup and our new room was awesome, although a bit dirty at first. However, the next day it was cleaned and since then was spotless. We had great "camareras" who did such an awesome and loving job. - Jelly-fish: nothing to be done about that. Just be aware that its the season for those and be careful. - Seaweed on the beach. Since its a long beach only the first part is cleaned so be aware of that. Conclusion: We loved it. In terms of bang for your buck you cannot go wrong with this place. Everyone works hard to maintain the resort as best as possible and we have not found a better beach anywhere. We'd go back in a heartbeat!

“Best beach I've been to + great service”
95% of the trip was great. The food was decent, beach was amazing, drinks were good..bartenders great. We rented a car for 2 days and had a great experience with the younger rep at the hotel, however when we went to return it, they had marked the gas in the wrong place and wouldn't take our word for it.. They wanted to charge us extra to fill the tank back up (in cash payment to the rep) to a higher spot where it was when we picked it up, but I refused. I said I would drive it back the 15km to the nearest gas station and fill it up myself. I did this and when I came back he told me I was now over my allowed KM for the trip, and that my overage was $47, to be paid in cash. I refused to pay cash and he said his credit machine wasn't working. This was because it wasn't plugged in. I asked him to plug it in and my payment went through fine and we parted ways. So, overall amazing trip however be sure to take a picture of the gas and KM gauge before you leave the rental depot. Recommend this to people who want to stay on the resort and not venture into actual Cuban cities.

My wife, myself and another couple had the pleasure of staying at this resort for 9 days from Oct 31 to Nov 9.The resort itself is beautiful and the grounds and gardens are kept immaculate. The food was always good with a large selection(could have been a little hotter) and the service was great. The only complaint i would have was the access to the beach, although the beach was beautiful, one of the nicest i've been to,the elevation from the covered sitting area to the beach was tough to walk down if you are older. There where also jellyfish, but this could be seasonal.I would gladly return to this resort as the pros far out way the cons.

      “Excellent Modern Resort ”
Went in April with my 9 yr old and husband. The most beautiful beach in my opinion and I have been to all major places in Cuba.. Cayo Largo and Playa Pilar in Cayo Guillermo (may be same). Better than Jamaica, Punta Cana, La Romana, all parts of Mexico... Good was really good I think! The fries snapper at lunch was so good but took too long so only had it once (45min). Snacks at beach were perfect for us, dinners were mostly good. I definitely prefer Mexico for food, even at a 3.5 * resort but for beaches and relaxation, I choose Santa Maria Cuba :) Very friendly staff, times are nice and layout of resort is excellent because everything is quite close. Shows were good, especially Michael Jackson and the breakdancers! We walked along the beach to the market and preferred it over taking the bus there. It's about a 15min walk to your right when you are facing the ocean. I would stay here again but I do like to explore new places, so only If I get a great deal.. We paid $800 each but price went down 2week prior to $700 each all inc. Great value!!!

      “Excellent time! ”
We got a last minute Air Canada vacation package and had a great time. This is our second time to Cuba, the first time we were at Paradisus Varadero. We found Playa Cayo Santa Maria a little bit less fancy, but with a nicer beach and the nearest airport (SNU) was far better. The beach was wonderful, the staff were friendly, and the buffet was good. The food at the a la carte restaurants was particularly good (we tried the Romantico and Seafood restaurants). The coffee was great here, especially the cappuccinos. Also, we had great weather even though the forecast called for rain and storms - it did rain, but only the evenings and at night. There were jellyfish in the water some days here (moon jellies) and manta rays; talking to travellers from other resorts it sounds like other places were flooded with jellies so were actually lucky.

“Great Resort, Staff, and Location! ”
I have been to Cuba many times and this was my first time to Cayo Santa Maria. This is a great hotel with amazing staff that provides excellent service. Below is my review of the main topics: Lobby/Hotel: The lobby is really big and nice; it is a good spot to hang out at anytime of the day to have drinks, coffee, etc. Always packed and sometimes there is a live band. There are quite a few hotel buildings (blocks) and I would suggest you try getting one closer to the ocean. We upgraded to an ocean view room, which was quite nice but not necessarily worth the upgrade as other people were getting partial ocean view rooms without paying for the upgrade and the rooms looked the same. The buildings are slightly outdated and some rooms may have a little mildew, cracks, stiff sliding doors, broken fans, etc. This is expected for older rooms. Anytime we needed anything fixed, someone would be at our door in minutes. The maids were really good too and daily they would leave nice notes for us. Pool/Beach: Pools are large and they even have small waiting pools for small kids. The main pool with the pool bar is the happening spot in regards to pools and there is never a dull moment there as there are lots of games going on. There is even ice cream available close by. The beach is the highlight of the resort and it is quite long but narrow. There is a bar right off the beach and staff will even serve you drinks. The only problem we had with the beach is that there were a lot of jellyfish for a couple of days, but they really are harmless and nothing to worry about. There is lots of huts with shade and tons of beach chairs. The water is super clear and the best I have seen so far in Cuba. Food: The buffet is large and has a lot of selection. The a la carte dinner locations are also good and I particularly enjoyed the International one as I was given 2 lobsters and the rest of the food was really good. The buffet close to the beach is limited for lunch and gets repetitive. However, you can order food off of a menu and it is is much better than what they have out in the buffet. The food in the main buffet may get repetitive, however there is so much selection that it makes up for that. Plus, the chefs cooking at stations for you helps a lot as you can customize your dishes and see fresh food being cooked right in front of you. There is a 24hr snack bar that is open close to the beach, which was very convenient and the food is quite good, especially for the late night snacks. Entertainment: The animation team is amazing and the Michael Jackson show was definitely their best act. The pool table in the animation area needs to be updated as it is really old, balls are chipped, cues are old, and the table is slanted. There is a disco onsite, however it is called the cigar lounge and most people don't go there. It is quite good though even though there is smoking inside (the air circulation helps get rid of the smell and smoke). The hotel just needs to market it better and hype it up more so more people will go. There's a club also offsite about a 10-15min bus ride away, however our group never ended up going there. Other: wifi onsite is slow in the computer room and costs $4.50 Cuban Pesos for an hour. Your best bet is to use your cellphone's wifi in the lobby, which uses the same $4.50 card that the computer room uses. It is much faster on your phone in the lobby. The gym is quite good and has treadmills, stepper, elliptical, machines, and even free weights and a bench press with a bar. Overall, this is a great hotel with an amazing beach, entertainment team, and staff. Enjoy!

We have stayed at Playa Cayo 4 times and have always had great service. The food is hit or miss, depending on the time of year that you stay here. The rooms are very large, clean and well accommodated. Beach is a little small for the Cayo and on a bit of an incline but comfortable chairs and great shade. There is no water more clear that the Cayo...As far as I am concerned the best beaches in Cuba are here. If you are coming for a relaxing vacation, then this is the place to stay

      “Amazing Stay, Great entertainment! ”
I stayed October 19th-26th it was beautiful other than the rain... So let me start, Our room: building 14 and third floor, it was AMAZING! Great view of the ocean and very big and clean. Food: Not bad for Cuba! Just bring ketchup that's for sure. The a la cartes were amazing! Seafood= love. Entertainment: remember these names because Capy and Ruben will make your trip. Capy was amazing. He helped us out so much and made our trip, he made sure we always had drinks and had no problems he is truly amazing and such a great guy! He deserves the world. The only downfall for entertainment is that there is no disco on this resort.... The ocean is breathless there. This resort is so nice! definitely a 5star, I just think that it your looking for a party choose another Hotel, this hotel is more for relaxing. They have a currency exchange area in the hotel but getting your money exchanged from the bank in town is a better rate. They advise you to bring bug spray but we didn't use ours there wasn't much. I liked the hotel because you would go to the beach in the morning and then by the pool at 3 there was entertainment and so we always had fun. Over all I would recommend this hotel. Thank you to everyone there who made our trip! But a special thanks to Capy and Ruben!!

      “Cayo Santa Maria first time.”
Stayed here at the beginning of Oct. so it was not high season. As a result, the buffet was not as diverse at it probably is at high time. That said, food was good and plentiful. Grounds are well kept. Rooms are cleaned well, lot's of hot water, fridge stocked well. I would recommend the Italian and Chinese A'lacarte ( lasagne and sweet and sour pork). I would strongly suggest the day tour to Havana. Great place at a good price. All in all, I recommended this resort.

This is my second stay at the Hotel playa caya Santa Maria,Even on my second stay I was still pleasantly amazed by this well kept hotel and the kindness of the staff and the cleanliness of my room. We were greeted by the carpeta director which took care of us as soon as we got to the lobby, we did not have to wait in line to get our room. However we were told that we would have front beach ,but front beach is not exactly an ocean view and my group was all separated into 2 different blocks, this is deceiving since we had previously wrote to HR director of our passing. Finally my husband and I have decided to take a suite, which was great! We do want to mention a few people that were very kind ,efficient and of course professional ,starting with Yillian (lobby) always smiling ,at the buffet we can not forget Yanny,Oscar and Karel, great team!! Thank you for making our stay enjoyable. I also want to mention the housecleaning staff for suite 1552 which I have forgotten the names but will not forget how very clean my suite was every single day. Also last but not least the animation team were very efficient and nice to everybody old and young, greeted us every day, never seemed tired always smiling, great group of people. My husband and I are in our 50's and have been to Playa twice, end of March 2014 and loved it so much that we went back the end of September 2014. This was our 4th & 5th trip to Cuba and will definitely go back 2015. The resort is beautiful, the beach is amazing, the rooms are kept very clean and the resort well layer out, I liked the multiple pools, there is a large main pool with lots of activities but if you want a little quiet the smaller pools are nice. I thought the buffet food was great, we enjoyed the breakfast smoothies and we ate at the beach restaurant for lunches and loved the pizza, The staff is fabulous, very friendly and spoke very good English. We enjoyed the entertainment in the lobby bar after dinner and the nightly entertainment excellent especially the Michael Jackson show. Would definitely recommend

My family and I spend an amazing week at Playa Cayo Santa Maria. The resort was very beautiful, and the beach breathtaking. The rooms very very nice and sparkling clean. The buffet was very good and the a la carte restaurants amazing. The shows in the evening were very entertaining. Our favorite one was Lara the magician. The best part was the staff. My 2 year old got tonsillitis and the clinic which was nearby was very good. Better medical service than back home. The staff was so helpful, especially Lisdania who even came to the clinic with us. She was so nice and friendly! Jaimara was the at the kids club and she took care of our older daughter when we had to take our son to hospital. I look forward to visiting Playa Cayo Santa Maria again!

October 20th, 2014 -November 3rd, 2014, WestJet package, 14 days all inclusive at below $1,100.00 per person. Exchange at the hotel +/- $60.00 CAD for $50.00 CUC. Mostly used for tips and taxi. Beautiful beach, nice grounds, food was little boring after 2 weeks in off season. Usually had for a breakfast omelette, grilled chicken and grilled fish. Lunch at the Beach restaurant. Not more than 3-4 people in the line. Large number of chairs at the beach and around the pools. Pools clean. Rooms clean, tip the maid at the beginning and they will look after you. Spent time at the beach reading and relaxing. Few optional excursions available, but we did not go. Hotel located 1,5 hour from the airport. Nice ride through few villages and small towns observing the local architecture and people. Very interesting drive over 70 km of man made causeway connecting the mainland and islands. Nice and helpful staff, always in good mood, treat them with the respect and you will be rewarded. Remember that they make a month what you probably make in an hour back home! Convenient International clinic is 5 minutes away or taxi $2.00 CUC both ways. 24/7 full service clinic. Needed the assistance with elevated blood pressure and I was looked after by great Dr. Yadira Gonzales and her medical colleagues, who came to the resort next day to check on me and called the room few times to make sure that I was ok. All for less than $150.00 including medicine, 3 hours in the room, EKG, blood test and other. 5 star for the beach, people, location, hotel, rooms. 3 star for buffet food, 4 star for Seafood and Italian restaurant where a bottle of good quality Spanish or Chilean wines was $7.00 - $15.00, are you kidding me?! It is a good 4,5 star Cuban hotel, but if you want 5 star North American or European hotel, go somewhere else and pay much more. If you need the special consideration, e-mail the hotel and they will accommodate you if possible. We will definitively consider to come back to this resort.

“Great Resort at a Great Price ”
I just returned from a week at Playa Santa Maria. I read a lot of reviews on this resort and went open minded. I will give you the good and the bad: Good - Beach was awesome, although if you want to go snorkeling, you can catch a cab up to Melia hotel for 5 pesos and snorkel and awesome reef just off the beach. Well worth the trip. - Hotel Rooms. They were modern, had a great layout and very clean. If you want to to the beach book block 7 or 15. I emailed ahead and got block 7, third floor with an ocean view. -Pools, very clean and many to choose from. If you want to party and drink they have a pool for that, if you want to relax and chill out with minimal noise, they have a pool for that. - Food, although people complain about the food in Cuba, I always found something I liked. They have a huge selection and many different options to eat at. The snack bar was great, the restaurant by the beach wasn't so great. Main buffet always had a large selection. The Bad: - Entertainment wasn't too bad but some very random nights. Definitely go see the Michael Jackson night and the Magic show. - Sports events. I played beach volleyball a couple of times but they never started on time and sometimes just started at random so don't expect to play at the time listed. - Tipping, I haven't been to Cuba for 10 years but I found the culture had definitely changed, tipping seemed to be more expected rather than being appreciated. Bartenders seemed to make you wait longer if you haven't previously tipped, water activities it was as if they expected a tip after, even though it was included in our package. We did tip and made sure it was because we had great service and to friendly staff. Overall I would go back to this resort and also bring my kids. The transfer was smooth, we felt very welcomed, the only real thing I could complain about was the rude and arrogant people who flew in from Montreal, but we all know what to expect from them.

“Beautiful Hotel and Amazing Staff ”
I was at the Playa Cayo Santa Maria earlier this month for a one week trip on my own. I had a great time and would definitely go back to this hotel. I was in building 6 and the room was very modern and fully equipped (flat screen TV, stocked fridge, safe, iron and board, etc.) As usual for most good hotels in Cuba, the room was spotless, bright and airy with a nice balcony and couldn?t have been more than a few years old. It even had a full size shower with large ?rain? shower head. If you want a quiet room, this is the best because it overlooks a vast open space with a view of the ocean and the hotel next door in the distance which is currently closed for renovations, I guess. By far the most pleasant aspect of this hotel is the staff and the service. Everybody there were without exception always courteous, attentive, smiling, hard working and genuinely pleased to be of help. The lobby bar area was the best I have ever seen in Cuba. It is bright with large cathedral ceilings and was the daily meeting place for everybody, from morning to well?early morning. It was always full of life and the bartenders made all the difference. The best one by far was David at the lobby bar: He was always in great spirits, his English is excellent and is a bright, ambitious, well informed and interesting guy to talk to. The beach has beautiful white sand (like flour) and the colour of the water is amazing! This hotel has one of the best beach locations in Cayo Santa Maria. As for food, it was fine too. There were lots of choices at the buffet and the a la carte restaurants were worth it. They offered a very pleasant dining experience. If there was one little cloud, it was that I would have expected the variety of the food to be a bit greater given that they rate themselves as a 41/2 star hotel but overall, it was still very good and I?ll never forget the pulled pork sandwiches they served on Cuban day. I would go back for sure and I hear you become a VIP when you do so with a bunch of perks.

      “Amazing Beach & Staff ”
I just returned from Playa Cayo Santa Maria early this morning from a one week trip with a friend. I had a great holiday and would definitely return back to this location & this resort specifically. Beach: Absolutely beautiful white sand and clear water! Although I haven't travelled extensively throughout the Caribbean, this is by far the best beach I?ve been at. Entertainment: The best way to start the day was stretching & beach volleyball with Lazaro, and then moving to the pool later for activities with Ruben, Yessy & group in the afternoon. They, along with others, always ensured that everyone was enjoying themselves! Bars: The best service is at the pool bar from Pascal. However, the bartenders were great throughout the resort - particularly from the Cigar bar and indoor beach bar. Food: I was pleasantly surprised. There were lots of choices and as usual (with other AI) the buffet was good but the a la carte restaurants were better. There was also a snack bar (open 24 hours) which had good bar food. Also, the ice cream parlour was a great surprise! Room: It was very suitable, nothing fancy but had everything you needed - no complaints. I can't say enough about the entire staff throughout the resort from the gardeners, cleaners, reception, bartenders but particularly the entertainment crew (Lazaro & Ruben). Hope to be back very soon to see everyone...maybe not one month...but maybe in three ;)

      “A wonderful resort!!! ”
My husband and I went to the Playa Cayo for 1 week in August just to relax. We were apprehensive to go back to Cuba after a not so memorable vacation at the Memories Varadero resort the year before. Well what can I say...we had a wonderful time. The bus pick up at the airport was well organised, comfortable and the trip to the resort went by quickly. The staff at the hotel reception were warm, friendly and accommodating. The rooms were nice, spacious, comfortable and very clean. My husband and I had an oceanview room on the 3rd floor and enjoyed the view immensely. The food was very good at the buffet and the Italian a la carte restaurant was also very good! I can be a picky eater being in the wine industry but I was extremely satisfied with the selection and quality of the food at the Playa. The staff were wonderful and genuinely friendly and engaging. A special thank you to Henry at the beach bar. What a wonderful, professional and friendly bar tender. My friend and I have booked a 9 day vacation at the Playa Cayo Santa Maria in January 2015. I can hardly wait to go back for some much needed R&R. Kudos to all of the staff as you really know how to make your guests feel welcome and at home in beautiful Santa Maria.

      “4th time ”
Back from our 4th trip to this resort in the last 2 years and are already planning our next. This resort is on the smaller side but has in my opinion the biggest heart. We have made friends with most of the staff. They had a small problem with there computers on this trip as we didnt get any upgrades like we have in the past and were given 1st time visit bands but the staff made sure we got those Fixed ASAP.Osvanny and Tordany kept us laughing and mugs filled at the Snack bar most days Sergeuy Oscar kept us all filled up at the Buffet but i know they will be moving to Snack bar and Beer Gardens in high season. Maidelin One of my Favorites at the resort will be moving to the Lobby i think as well she is such a Doll. We rented a Car for the second time and went to Visit some of the staff at there homes to meet up with there loved ones and could not get over there reaction to us coming to see them at there home. I cants say a Bad thing about this resort after being there 4 times the staff and the management team treat us like were the only ones but i know they treat all there visitors that way. It just always feels special. As i have said in other reviews the Staff here will make u want to come back more and more and all you really need to do is give them respect and treat them how you want to be Treated they are the Best. Break Down Staff 10 out of 10 Food 8 out of 10 depends on your taste pools 8 out of 10 .....4 to choose from Beach 9 out of 10 .... was rough most days this visit but thats mother nature Bars 10 out of 10 .... i never waited more then a couple min to get refills

      “AMAZING! A week in paradise.....”
We travelled as a group of 5 in total with two kids(16 &9) from Sept.29th till October 6th,2014. I have travelled to Cuba 11 times at various hotels(3.5-5+), ratings and areas of Cuba( Varadero, Cayo Santa Maria, Cayo Coco, Cayo Largo etc.) so I know exactly what to expect as well I have travelled to many places in the Caribbean (Mexico, Dominican, Cayman islands, etc) I would like to say that this hotel had exceeded our expectations and overall was an amazing trip. We had chosen Playa due to it's great reviews. I had calculated the satisfaction rating for Hotel Playa and the Iberostar Ensenachos and Playa had a higher rating of 88% satisfaction versus Iberostar's 80% satisfaction rate. Our relatives who had gone to Iberostar that they were not amzed in any real way at Iberostar and that it was just an average resaonable resort. Go to Playa, it is much better for your money and in general, quality wise as well. Pros: The Beach - I've been to many tropical Caribbean countries and known of them have beaches like this one. No Mexico, Dominican, St.Lucia or whatever will ever offer you a beach this pristine or crystal clear watered. It's one of the reasons why we come back to Cuba multiple times every year, for the beaches that you can't beat nor get anywhere else. Our whole week the ocean had no waves and was as warm as baby milk maybe even warmer.:) Rooms: The nicest, most modern rooms so far I've seen in Cuba. We were in block 5 , third floor and had an oceanview room.(Which was great since we actually did not request it and got for free without a surplus upgrade charge. This could have been because it was low season. ) Everything worked and was clean. The maid did her job very well every day. The safe is at no extra charge and worked great. TV had a lot of channels in various languages, mini-bar was stocked daily with 1.5 litre bottle of water, juices/sodas/beers. The room had beautiful view.Overall: Great! Food: Comparable to other hotels in Cuba, the food was quite tasty. There was always something good to eat everyday. Breakfast was at the buffet. There was smoked salmon available everyday . Yum! You could have lunch at the Ranchon playa or the snack bar by the main pool which had a large selection on their menu ranging from burgers, salads, pizza, etc. even fried shrimp. Many people don't know that the ranchon playa by the beach as well offers a menu which lunch can be ordered from along with the buffet available. Dinner was either at the buffet or ala-cartes. Dinner at the buffet was really good. You get 2 ala carte reservations per a week, so we had the asian and seafood one. Both where very good and even had lobster at both of them at no extra charge( this can usually be charged extra for at most Cuban hotels). Service: Service was also great, everything requested was complied with quickly. Waiters/staff knew a good amount of English and were reasonably easy to communicate with. Overall: Great! Hotel Grounds + Pools: Everything is new modern and clean to sum things up. Impressed with the modern fixtures, landscape and architecture. There are 4 pools. Two large square large one by the center of the resort(by the snackbar/beach/beer garden) and then there are two identical long rectangular one at each opposite side of the hotel. They are all in good condition and were cleaned daily. Overall: Great. Cons: THERE WERE NONE! :) Too be honest, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and couldn't really find any down sides. In summary, will we come back to Playa? Definitely. The value for your dollar is great and can't be beat by any other hotel in Cayo Santa Maria.(We have visited other hotels in Cayo Santa Maria.) We would like to say thank to the hotel and staff, especially to Lisdania ( Sorry, if I spelt your name wrong.) thank you all very much for the wonderful week.

      “A Dream Vacation ”
My wife and I took a vacation on Sep 26- Oct 3-2014 for the first time to Cuba. Our daughter recommended Hotel Playa Cayo Santa Maria through Transat Holidays and Nolitours. Let me start by saying that I have taken a flight to Mexico with Sunwing but this time took air Transat and I would never go back and fly with Sunwing. From the moment we arrived the Transat rep was amazing and very professional. Once we got to the hotel, the enhanced experience by the courteous and friendly staff was over the top. This was the beginning of a week we will never forget. During the course of the week we met hotel staff members that went over and beyond the call of duty. Therefore we would like to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone one of them from the bottom of our hearts for an unforgettable week. I would like to start thanking each one by respectfully naming them. Starting with Samara Leiva, Jorge Calderin, Raull De La Torre and Alejandro Carballido Garcia who were an amazing team. The food and restaurant staff were also amazing. Yanelis was extremely efficient when it came to our reservations for the a la carte restaurants. We had special attention at the Seafood restaurant from the captain named Japckel Sanchez Gonzalez. There are many negative comments about food when it comes to Cuba but let me assure you we had really great food from prosciutto , salami and many types of cheese. Really good natural made juices, homemade donuts, fresh baked bread in the morning. When it came to the bar service , this was my best part. Danier Rotas Mendoza went over the top. He knew what I liked everyday to drink. We also made good relationships with the gardeners. I feel they are very much ignored and we wanted to make them feel important. Their names are as follows Israel Jaldiva, Davel Hernandez, Omar Santana y Ramon Hernandat. They guided us through out the hotel and always told us where we needed to go. My wife and I also tried the Spa and we had a couples massage. We strongly recommend everyone try the Spa. When it came to the beach , it's true what they say. Cuba has the best beaches. The water was crystal clear. In conclusion for everyone planning a trip to Cuba , me and wife would strongly recommend Hotel Playa Cayo Santa Maria.

I hope they have good beds to sleep at night because they deserve it! Our room was very clean and the bed was very comfortable. The personnel is so nice and always ready to help us. “Outstanding Value”
Playa Santa Maria excels in many ways. First, the staff are exceptional, perhaps the nicest of any all inclusive I?ve stayed in. They go out of their way to make your stay as great as possible. I felt they were genuinely were concerned about the quality of service they gave. Second, the hotel itself. The rooms were large and well laid out with large bathrooms. I found the bed to be quite comfortable, contrary to some other comments. Bugs were never a problem. It is a large hotel and can involve a lot of walking, but this is good as most people over eat and drink at all inclusives and the walking helps moderate any weight gain. It was possible to get rides, if the walking is too much. Finally, there are lots of English stations available on the TV, including BBC and CNN, but then, are you really there to watch much TV? Third, there are lots of pools and an incredible beach. The sand is some of the whitest I?ve seen. You can walk for miles. In October, it was always possible to find a place in the shade at any time. And yes, despite the fact that this is rainy season, there was lots of sun everyday and little rain in the week I was there. There is beach drink service on the beach. Someone will come and take your order most days. There were two quiet pools and one party pool. Finding shade at the pools was a little tricker, but it does exist and I could always get it. Fourth, the food. Cuban all inclusives have a reputation for so-so food. The key at this one, like all the others is find what you like. There is some really good food at the buffets. The grilled meets are quite good. I really like the lamb. I found the desserts to be some of the best I?ve had at any all inclusive resort. This is not good for weight control, but my taste buds loved them! The ice cream is premium quality. There is an ice cream bar near the main swimming pool. Oh, if eating outside, watch for crows!!! Five of them almost took my hamburger! Finally, the seafood and asian restaurants are quite good. The Longina restaurant serves excellent lobster with great service. Not to be missed! The house wine is poor, stick to beer or buy the better wines. Finally, the entertainment was variable, some good, some kinda boring. At times it was hard to understand what was being said. The sound was just too loud. Like any resort, there are some negatives. First, the lobby bar could be quite hot and even though there was a no smoking section, it could also be a bit smoky. They really need ceiling fans here. However, the service was usually excellent and they sometimes had live music. The group in the morning was really good. The Internet was the fastest I?ve seen in Cuba. It certainly stacks up well to hotels in many countries. Hotel Internet is rarely that good anywhere. Overall, this resort is excellent value, perhaps the best value of any resort or hotel I?ve stayed in, especially given low October prices. It?s a bit of a gamble with the weather at this time of the year, but this year, it was excellent. The hotel was about 40% full, impressive for this time of year. One more thing, in some reviews, people have said some negative things about Cuban guests. There were many at this hotel, especially over the weekend. With one exception, they were fine. Of course, I could find exceptions for any nationality. Just read about some of the Canadians in the cheaper resorts!

This was my 7th week spent in Cuba. I must say, I was impressed. The friendliness of the staff was just amazing! I'm not going to complain about the food or say it was excellent because there's always room for improvement. For those of you who complain about the beef.....newsflash...Cuba isn't known for its beef....yet. Try the pork, chicken or seafood! There never was much for lineups at the buffet either. The lobby bar and snackbar were always open 24hrs. for refreshments and a bite to eat. The beach was amazing, fine white powdery sand and no coral in the water. So no need for watershoes here. This was my first time going this time of year..the ocean temp was amazingly warm. The rooms are spacious with balconies. Our room only had a shower, no tub in case you may expect one.....maybe if you ask? Big thanks to those who left the roomservice plates outside the building and not on the stairwell, like I've seen in the past. Not a good place for those coming home late at night after a few beverages. Thanks again to those guests. Really an enclosed station to keep them out of sight may be a little more esthetically pleasing to the guests. Before I forget, this resort did have Wifi available in the lobby and internet cafe for $4.50cuc/hr. Cards were available from the phone booth area. Over all, this place exceeded my expectations and the other guests were a pleasure to be around too! Good job Hotel Playa Cayo Santa Maria & keep up the good work!
