    • Varadero Airport

Juan Gualberto Gomez Airport was built in 1989 and inaugurated by Fidel Castro,[3] thus replacing the old Varadero airport located in Santa Marta, currently known as Kawama Airport. The airport was named after a journalist, fighter for the Cuban Independence and black rights activist in Cuba Juan Gualberto Gómez (1854–1933). The terminal building has shops for tourists (including rum, cigars, T-shirts, books, carvings, pharmaceuticals), a large departures lounge cafeterias and a VIP lounge. A VIP card is available by paying $30/person to the local tour company representative. This allows the departing passenger to bypass the queues for check-in, have an agent take your departure tax to the correct official for you, and bypass any lines for passport control. The passenger is then taken to the VIP lounge which provides free food and drink (including alcoholic beverages).[4] The ground handling equipment is imported mainly from North America. There are four jet bridges, but air stairs are used for the remaining aircraft parking spaces on the apron by the terminal. Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport (IATA: VRA, ICAO: MUVR), formerly known as Varadero Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto de Varadero), is an international airport serving Varadero, Cuba and the province of Matanzas. The airport is located closer to the city of Matanzas than to Varadero. The closest airport to Varadero is Kawama Airport. In 2009, the airport handled 1.28 million passengers,[2] making it the second busiest airport in Cuba after José Martí International Airport in Havana.

        “Terrible vacation ! ”
This was our first vacation, we wore so excited for this trip. When we got there we had to wait 4 hours for the room, after four hours we went back they said they don't have a king size bed only two beds so we tipped the receptionist, she's like let me see what I can do so we waited for a while then they finally found one all of the sudden. When we got to the room the mini bar was empty so we called and asked if we could at least have some water it was 5 o'clock when we called we waited an hour we still didn't get nothing we went to the lobby they said they well bring it right away still nothing we went to dinner came back to the room there was still nothing in the mini bar so again we went to the lobby for the second time this was around 10 pm. By the time they came it was 1:00 in the morning and thats how it was almost everyday that we wore there was always something missing it's rather they wouldn't bring the coffee or the beer or the water. We tipped the cleaner everyday thinking she would probly clean the room a little better, but instead everyday it got worse she would just make the bed and bring new towels thats it she wouldn't even clean the floors. We had ants all over the room. The bad was so uncomfortable. The alcohol tasted so watery and the beer was only one kind. The mixed drinks wore poorly made. The buffe was not the best same food everyday, breakfast was good they had omelette everyday. But the service was horrible we would ask for water we would almost be done eating by the time they brought the water. The main buffe was closed so it took us 10 Minutes to walk to the other buffet. They drained out all the ponds in the resort. It looked terrible. We bought a internet card it was 5 pesos for one hour all we got was 5 mins cz it wouldn't work on the phones we had and there computers wore sooo slow. We tipped everyone everyday and still the people wore so unhappy they wouldnt even say thank u. Restorant the food was so salty they said they have 7 restorants but there was only two they just served different food. So much for tipping them and trying to be nice to them and thats what we got in return. What an experience we had. The last day the Rep told us the bus well be at the lobby at 8:30 we waited till 9:20 and the bus was still not there. We well never be going back to this hotel. I wouldn't recommended to anyone to go there.

        “Don't Stay ”
Spent last week at the Melia Peninsula would not recommend to anyone or go back. Main pool closed, theater closed 4 out of 7 days, night club closed, no water in the front displays, toilet leaked (tried to get fixed twice) shower leaked after using it every time. NO organized activities on the beach. No music on the beach. Listened to other resorts have fun. Havana bus tour, bus an hour late, 20 minuets later had to wait for another bus (ours broke down) another 45 minuet wait. This was an anniversary gift for my husband. I am heartbroken. Also lights went out in the entrance while waiting for the bus to airport home, no one could fix so we stood outside in the dark for half an hour, a fitting end to a not so great experience.

        “First time to Cuba ”
THE GOOD: Bar Staff - very hard working staff, have nothing but good things to say about them. I ordered many coffee's and non alcohol drinks, they always gave us great service. Housekeeper- did a good job. Shows- very enjoyable. THE BAD-were only informed before we left that the main pool was closed and not told about the rest. We had no idea that almost everything else on the resort was pretty much closed until we arrived. All water was drained all through out the resort except for one small kids pool. We also found out that the main buffet was closed. So we walked to the beach buffet for all meals. Our one good meal was at the Japanese restaurant, it was excellent. We sure did enjoy our excursions and had great food off the resort. We asked one day for the paddle boat but was denied because apparently the water was to rough, yet the other resorts were out in the water. We found several beach staff sitting everyday except for security. Lucky for us we were able to get off the resort and do fun stuff and have some great food. We felt that we did not get our money's worth at this resort.

        “Disappointed ”
Went to the Melia Peninsula last week and wasn't very happy at all. The main pool was closed for renovations and so was the night club. We had so many ants in the room and some even found there way back to Canada ...GROSS The beds were rock hard and next time will take a blow up matress LOL The beach was awesome , the staff was totally amazing and some of the hardest workers I have ever seen in my life...The food was ok for Cuba. The check in and check out was very fast and our room was ready by 1pm when we got there. I might go back once the renovations are complete just to see the awesome staff again

        “Good stay ”
We spent a week in this resort in the summer of 2012, we actually enjoyed even if there had been a few small issues eventually solved. The food was good, not great but after all this is Cuba. We had to change room for a problem with the air conditioning but, even with a bit of delay, the new room was fine. The garden was very nice and the beach astonishing! I really loved to sip my cocktails in front of the sea. For those who intend to go to Cuba, something that I really recommend, I suggest to go to meet this beautiful population, knew a very peculiar society and enjoy the weather. Just don't expect n European context, that wound be disappointed as much as unfair.

“Returned for a 2nd time and had again a great vacation at Melia Peninsula!!! ”
We are a family of 4 ( kids 10 & 7) and we travelled with another family of five (kids 13, 10, 7) the week of August 10 to the 17th. We had an amazing time at the Peninsula. We chose this resort mainly because we were very pleased with our first trip in 2013. We also became friends with some incredible people that work there and made sure that we feel at home and do their best to please us. I would like to send a special thanks to Sergio Jesus Vilalonga for waiting for us upon our arrival to greet us, assisted to all our needs and for making sure that the entire week we were there that everything was perfect for us and our friends. Sergio is very helpful and we wish him all the best and we want him to know that we appreciate his kindness. The customer service at this hotel is amazing, we would get a phone call every morning asking us if everything was ok. Our room was nice, block 28 very well located near beach and main pool but we preferred block 27 which we stayed at last year. Maids keep room clean, restocked every day. The water pressure is the best I know of in Cuba and we have travelled in Cuba many times. The beach is beautiful, however the sand has lifted since last summer creating a step. We saw many fishes the week we were there. We couldn't get new beach towels twice during the week cause of some external laundry issue but no big deal. The pool needs renovations. They did tell me that the main pool will get tiles in november which is needed. Last year they painted the pool but it was not enough. The tiles should look great and they should also paint or tile the tanning area around the pool bar that has those steps because that's necessary also. When it comes to the food it's ok. Went to 4 à la carte, the French fantastic, the Japanese was very entertaining, the Cuban was excellent and the grill has good. The buffet has a big variety and we would always find something different to eat. A little disappointed with the pizza at the snack bar, wasn't as good as last year even my kids noticed it. The grounds are very well kept. Beautiful palm trees, flowers and foliage. The water ponds got emptied, not sure why. I believe they have a hard time maintaining them due to the extreme summer heat. Maybe they should consider a better filtration system because last year when they had water it looked beautiful. The animation team works hard trying to get the guest involved but many guest are just not in the mood. We want to say hello to Jorge and "Dale" and we wish him all the best. Jorge is a great guy that we have gotten to know well and will always make you smile. Night shows are very good and disco plays good latin music. This year they added a beach party on Wednesday night which was lots of fun dancing on the sand at night. To conclude, we recommend this hotel if you don't have extremely high expectations. It's not a five star. You always have to remember that you're in Cuba and standards are different. The Cubans are wonderful people they always smile, try to make the best out of everything. We would return a third time. Once again, Muchos gracias to all the wonderful staff at the Melia Peninsula!

        “Paradise again”
I have been to this resort 16 times over the past 5 years. I do not wish to go anywhere else. Regardless of the necessary renovations and maintainance I am in paradise. I spend my time snorkelling at the beautiful beach and always find treasures from the ocean. The staff have become my "family" and I adore them all. My room is always perfect and the food is great. The beach staff always have my lounge chair set up and ready and reserved each and every morning. Once you make good friends here, you may have the privilege of being invited to "their" home and see the "real" Cuban life. Don't take yours for granted. They work long hours, in extreme heat, with only 1 day off a week, for the equivilent to $20 or less Canadian per MONTH. Yet, they are always professional, friendly, and happy to serve you. They do the best they can to please you with what they have available to them. This is Cuba!! Sit back, relax, enjoy the sun and ocean and learn something about this country and it's extraordinary people. If there is something that needs to be addressed, just politely speak up and notify the staff, and it shall be resolved. I always take my snorkel and enjoy hours of adventure right at the beach. I have found beautiful shells, and witnesses awesome sea creatures that most only see on TV. I have enjoyed this resort with my husband, my children, my friends, my extended family, and new friends that I have met while there. We are returning next week for another dose of paradise. I can go alone and feel 100% safe and never have to worry about a thing. The market in nearby Varadero is awesome. Take the double decker bus for $5.00 round trip (hop on hop off all day). Participate in the dance lessons/volleyball/morning exercises/paddle boats/wind surfing/and more on the beach (all included). Take the catamaran out to the coral reef for a breathtaking snorkelling experience (super deal). The hospitality is the best I have ever experienced and I have been to several places around the world. I am treated like family at this hotel - (you won't get that in any hotel in Canada).

        Excellent Hotel
Innovative and amazing, this All-inclusive hotel integrates harmoniously into its natural environment of colourful gardens and beautiful beaches. Modern and very cosy, it offers a wide range of attractions and services that go from its spacious rooms, decorated with exquisite taste to a beautiful pool, with a section for children and in a marine atmosphere. The staff continuously strives to provide customized and deferential treatment to guests, especially to families. The 5-Star resort looks very impressive: the tropical gardens amongst the small 2-story bedroom blocks are very well positioned for privacy. Facilities include a few restaurants serving national and international cuisine, several bars, and a swimming pool with a section for kids, gym, sauna, spa, shooting range, there is even a special honeymoon package. All will make for a pleasant experience in Varadero.
