“2 disappointed and flea ridden guests!! ”
Having never written a review before we feel compelled to give a balanced review of this hotel after our recent experience. On arrival and finding our room 210 at the furthest point from the reception and losing our way we opened the door to a strong stale smell of tobacco which as non smokers wasnt great. The room was tired to say the least with many sockets hanging outside the wall and loose floor tiles .There was a rusty old fridge which did have a bottle of water in and worked to be fair. However there was no toilet brush which as we both had an upset tummy is not very good and we were grateful of taking some antibac gel with us.There was also no plug in the sink which isnt a major problem until washing a few bits through .Bath towels were old and ripped but shower gel and shampoo was a nice touch..Couldnt use the balcony as it overlooked the swamp and the bugs were clearly visible in small swarms outside even though they fog twice a day most days. .Demolition work extended onto a guest pathway with a metal screw extending out of a post which was dangerous Staff service ranged from excellent to poor. On one occasion i had queued at the snack bar and being the only person stood there he took my order and prepared my pizza and placed in the oven. I have to say my order of chips couldnt be fulfilled as the smoke and smell from the fryer the previous day had resulted in the fryer setting on fire !!! After my pizza had been in for a good 5 to 10 mins a spanish speaking lady came and ordered the same pizza and he then turned to me and asked what i wanted !!! i was shocked and said its in the oven nearly ready and he informed me that it was hers !!!!!!! I have to say the snack bar would be shut down if in England as it was open to the outside and had filthy floors and windows and the chefs whites were ripped and dirty .The main restaurant was clean apart from the microwave which had 2 flies in it and was there to reheat the cold food served daily . For me i wasnt prepared to risk reheating food that had been stood for god knows how long and possibly reheated before.Birds flying round the food tables also not ideal. The beach bar food depended on who was on duty whether it was undercooked or raw chicken or burgers though George always did an excellent job.The waiting on staff in the main restaurant were always lovely and work very hard . Special mention for Antonio who was so lovely and did his best to chat even disappearing to ask how to say certain words in english . We gave him a footy shirt and he was over the moon and very grateful. Lobby bar fab as was Carlos whos a gem and takes a pride in serving you the best blend of drinks and Yamilla who was always cheery and helpful . Just a pity it was only open from 4 as the bar is lovely. The main bar however has 2 surly staff on till about 3 and they are quite abrupt and rude at times and made us feel uncomfortable by a curt nod of the head and then giggling and talking to each other which as we cant understand made you feel as you may have been the butt of their jokes. Toilet facilities were poor and limited as out of the main 3 ladies toilets there were no hinges or locks on two and it was a fair drag being near reception if you were on the beach . The beach and sea are amazing and as a non swimmer i could comfortably walk out a good 200 yards without feeling bothered and saw many fish crabs etc . The bites however spoiled this as we thought they were from the sand fleas and were that bad and uncomfortable we stopped going down there as people had said the fact the seaweed wasnt completely removed and just placed at the side of the beach instead may have contributed . However after reading other reviews we now think they are possibly bed fleas as they are all where your body touches the bedding. We had taken after bite and repellent as well as cortisone cream and nothing worked !!!! Also even though we dont mind tipping for good service one shouldnt be made to feel that this is obligatory when in an all inclusive resort . In conclusion we found cuban people very sincere and genuinely friendly and fun loving and would definetly visit Cuba again but as it stands sadly not this resort .

“Do not wait, just book your vacation at Sol Cayo Guillermo ”
Our first trip to Cuba and lovely resort SCG in last week in Nov.8-15/2014. Flying with West Jet was no problem, watched a good movie on the way to Cuba but when back there was no movie's at all. Cuba airport transfer was worry free, people there are very friendly and welcome. Exchange some Cuban peso on airport, there was much better rate than in hotel. Bus transfer was very well organized and received a great welcome by transfer rep. On arrival to the resort there was a welcome cocktail which was very nice, Due to the number of people checking in at reception we wait for our room for about 30-40 minutes but it was worthed, room 822 was very good, nice, clean and fresh paint with some ocean view. Air-con was great, bed was comfortable, TV was working, only fridge didn't work, but we do not need at that time, and our maids brought the bottle of water everyday, so there was no complaints. Thank you Eglain and Dunieska and other staff for looking after us. Bar staff did excellent job, they are super friendly and very efficient, special tanks to Francis and Mary and of course everyone who served us during our stay and very good coffee in the morning. The restaurant team was great, all people there work very hard and the food they serve was excellent, we had no issues at all. I love their strawberry cake and all other cakes. Beach was incredible, only 2 minutes walk from our room. It was a pure white sands and Crystal clear waters meet us on our first day, my 7 year old stay in the ocean all the time. Every day Temperature was about 27-29 deg. C. so it was nice to swim and snorkeling. Only issues we had it was with sun-beds on the beach, boys who clean the beach took them away early morning and stored them so high so average people could not reach them and boys willing to help but they looking for tip. But in the first place why they moved these sun-beds and moved them back later on. I know that people looking for tip but I think it wasn't a nice way. Our trip to Ciego de Avila and Moron was fabulous. Good guide who provided lots of information and plenty opportunities to see the beautiful Cuba and meet Cuban people. Entertainment, was great and special thanks to Yaniel and Ailex and others entertainment crew they did excellent job and great shows. My 7 year old son loved mini-disco. Overall, I recommended this Sol Cayo Guillermo for peace and place where dreams are made. Special tanks for Rudy the man who never sleeps. Best Regards, Andrew.

I had a great time at that hotel. People are extremely kind and are always ready to help. I had some little issues with my room, but the staff fixed every of them and promptly. The food was very, very good. The beach is totally amazing. As a travel agent, I will definitely offer that resort to my clients.

        “Cannot Fault, An Amazing Holiday”
We travelled to Sol Cayo Guillermo in November 2013 for 2 weeks with another couple and did not know what to expect. None of us had visited Cuba before and heard mixed reviews about the hotels and we had bad experiences with all inclusive hotels in other countries. I won't sugar coat it, the facilities are basic and the whole place needs a good lick of paint but this needs to be expected of Cuba as a whole as they are limited to what they can use. This is forgotten about however when you meet the staff and get into the atmosphere of Cuba. The staff were incredibly friendly and couldn't do enough for you. We did tip frequently throughout our stay but only because this was well deserved and obviously much appreciated. Even the gardeners will go above and beyond, I was bitten to death by sand flies (try to stay clear of the beach at dusk) and I had a nasty reaction to the bites, the gardener had spotted me in pain and came round with a couple of freshly cut Aloe Vera plants for me to use. The rooms are basic but they are kept clean and we're not ones to stay in our rooms much so it was everything that we needed. The food was amazing, a lot of fresh fruit and salads and whole roasted pigs most nights which was incredible. My partner caught a kingfish one day out on a catamaran and the kitchen cooked it up for us that night and brought it to our table and didn't expect anything for it either. We booked our trip with Thomas Cook and were encouraged to book our excursions with them, one note - DO NOT DO THIS! We booked a couple of trips that were not worth the money and we ended up cancelling a few we had planned. Best tip we learnt, hang around the lobby and meet a local taxi driver, we met a great guy, Levan, and for around £40 each, he drove us onto the mainland, took us on a speedboat through the mangroves, took us to a crocodile sanctuary, bought us lunch and walked us through a couple of the local towns where the staff live. It was amazing to be shown the country by someone who truly loves and knows the land and was worth the money! All in all, this place is not state of the art and the facilities are basic but that's Cuba and the hospitality of the staff makes up for it tenfold!

        “Excellent vacation ”
Myself and a friend stayed at this property from November 2nd to November 9th. We really enjoyed our stay. I had previously been numerous times before and returned again after a few years. Management is truly amazing here. Contrary to some reviews on here I LOVE LOVE LOVE the new direction this quaint little resort is going in. Antonio is by far the very best manager this hotel has seen. He runs a tight ship with little tolerance for failure. Nelido is amazing as well as Rudy. Nelido made my vacation amazing. The room was perfect and the small additions were perfect too. Arriving to a nice bottle of rum and a nicely decorated room was very welcoming. Front desk staff was also amazing. Food was good. A lot of variety and very friendly staff in the buffet as well as the a la carte and beach grill. I did not even miss the beach restaurant because there was plenty of selection. People who complain about the food are too spoiled and should just not travel. We did not have fantastic beach weather due to a cold front so we spent our days by the pool. The pool was clean and the staff around the pool were amazing. Shout out to Jorge! He is very friendly and helpful. I urge you to try this resort. It is very personal and you always see smiling faces. Thanks sol cayo Guillermo for a amazing vacation! Once again thanks Antonio for keeping the staff on top of good service and interaction with the guests! Truly these are the most important things about a vacation!

“Returned to Sol and can't wait to go back ”
This was my second visit, 29/10/14 to 13/11/14, to Sol Guillermo this year and I will return in March 15. Yes there is building work still going on but not too intrusive, and yes it is a long way to drive to see the real Cuba but what a wonderfully staffed hotel. I was so glad to return and see Carlos, Dianet, Mary, Yanila, Hermes, (Maidelyn and Lesy briefly) as well as all the other great staff from the gardeners to customer services. Hopefully when I return I won't have noisy neighbours but that's not the hotels fault. I've been home now for three days and am missing everyone already, maybe I will try and book and return before next March! Jose Antonio R please thank everyone on your staff for giving me another wonderful holiday. Hasta Pronto mi amigos y amigas. Keith

The Sol Cayo Guillermo Hotel, which is located in the Jardines del Rey archipelago, north of eastern Ciego de Avila province, complements the tourist offers of Cuba's fastest-growing destination. The hotel is situated on one of the most beautiful beach strips in Cuba and is surrounded by a breathtaking environment of exuberant vegetation and tropical forests. It is the perfect place for nature lovers, who can admire the greenery of mangrove swamps, the silver blue of the sea, the majestic flamingos and the sea bottoms, and can stay in modern bungalows with roomy terraces.
