Hi, I am flying to Cuba in two weeks and I 've been told I can go swimming with the dolphins - does anyone know where I can do that in the western half of the island and how much this may cost? The easternmost I will go is Trinidad and if possible, I would like to avoid touristy places like Varadero. I heard it is dolphins in the aquarium in Guardalabacca (wrong spelling), the tourist place with many all inclusive hotels, 55 kilometers north of Holguin,, and south in Cuba Why the F would you want to perpetuate the oppression and captivity of even more mammals in Cuba?? There are millions of oppressed Cuban people and the last thing you need is captive porpoises whose sole purpose is eternal servitude to tourists. Cuba has much to offer, but swimming with the dolphins is NOT one of their most redeeming ventures. Yes, it is avaialable, but you will absolutely have to go to a tourist area because Cubans are hungry and if they caught a dolphin they would likely eat them like they do the endangered turtles. I went with my husband and stepdaughter to someplace in Costa Morena in Santiago de Cuba to the aquarium there. It wasn't a whole lot in CUP for her, and she really enjoyed it. They want you to pay for their photos but I took enough of my own. A TV crew was there filming for a commercial and her mom saw her on TV the next day. What rather spoiled the whole thing for me is the poor walruses they had in that oppressive heat. Because she had paid for the swim we were able to get very close to the animals, where I was clearly able to see that the walruses were apparently being tortured with electricity to the point that they had what looked like multiple round burn scars. I have photos of that too. This may sound weird to some of you, but I told the walrus and dolphin personally that I was sorry for what they were enduring there

    Swimming with dolphins
Many people place swimming with dolphins high on their list of things to do in life and Cuba offers the perfect setting. In the resorts of Varadero and Holguin there are special trips where people go out in a boat and have the sheer joy of swimming with a school of dolphins.

    dolphins
I have swam with the dolphins at both locations and the dolphinarium is the most enjoyable, the one that is part of the Cayo catamaran trip was very disappointing with maybe 10 minutes in the water with a whole large group but the rest of the trip was fantastic, at the dophinarium we were in the water about 30 minutes with a smaller group as they only allow so many in the water at one time. they also put on a fantastic show. as for the dolphins being free in the ocean that is untrue. They are penned in with netting and a much smaller area than at the dolphinarium. this is done all over the caribbean, when in punta cana we swam with sharks in the ocean that were penned in with nets also. to my eye they were well taken care of and not abused in any way, not that I am an expert but abuse can never be kept a secret. in the dominican they keep the dolphins in small clear tanks, now that is cruel, people are abstaining from that attraction because of the obvious abuse. the dolphins are wonderful and enjoy every moment as you are among a small few that get to experience this. enjoy your trip

    swim with dolphins
I'm unsure about whether to do the ocean swim with dolphins or in varadero. Can anyone say roughly how long you are in the water in the lagoon with them? I understand that at sea its very little and would like to compare.

    Enjoy!
My husband and I went on the catamaran tour to Cayo Blanco and on the way back we stopped and swam with the dolphins that are kept in the enclosure out in the ocean. Cayo Blanco is a must see, with it's beautiful white sands and crystal clear waters. Enjoy!

    amazing experience
Hi, we did the dolphin swim in Varadero and yes the water is murky but it is a lagoon surrounded by mangroves and is never going to be completely clear like the ocean. We and our children aged 6,7,9 all had the most amazing experience and one that we will never forget. Having spoken to people whilst we were there the ones who did the ocean swim said they were very disappointed as they got very little time with the dolphins. Go and enjoy.

    dolphin kissing your head
We just did the catamaran trip with the dolphin swim in the ocean. Just don't expect much. The kids were in the water approximately 2 minutes, got to touch the dolphin and then the photographer takes a picture of the dolphin kissing your head. If your kids are younger, go to the opposite (far)end of the pen. We waited for the first group to get out and we were the second group. When my stepson went to get in the water, the catamaran staff stopped him and said he was too small and he had to go to the other side. This was after we were waiting there for 5 minutes. Just wish they would have told us that on the catamaran, or at least while we were standing there waiting. The kids did like it though and depending on their ages, might not be disappointed. My 12 and 14 year old liked it.

    Nice
Definetly do the catamaran excursion. It's an all day trip, and you stop out in the ocean (there's a dolpinarium out in the ocean which is more natural then the dolphinarium in veradero....gross) and, not quite swim with them persay, but are in the waters with them as the trainor blows their whistle to make the dolphins swim up to you. It's awesome! Then you go to an island for a bbq, etc. Worthwhile.

    dolphins in Varadero
I swam with the dolphins in Varadero. I was very disappointed because the water was absolutly discusting. I could not see my own hand just inches under the surface. There are so many weeds and gross things touching your legs that it is difficult to enjoy the experience. I would try else where. It has been my lifelong dream to swim with them and the experience was not great since I was so apprehensive about what was grabbing at my legs.

Hi, I read on a post ( I wish I could remember the post more clearly) there is a dolphin swim that is done in the ocean. I am going to Varadero Nov 29 and I want to do the dolphin swim, but I will make sure it is not in a murky lagoon where the dolphins are not treated well. If anyone knows which package has ocean swims, please post.

There was a recent review by someone at the Paradisus, whose husband contracted Ecoli when swimming with the dolphins. He apparently had an open sore while in the water. Just an FYI !

Just wondering if anyone has swam with the dolphins in Varadero? We are taking our 3 boys for their first trip and of course it is something they want to do. I am wondering what type of water they are in, dirty and murky or pretty clean, don't want anything gross looking! Thanks a bunch!

    Goood..........
My wife and I were in Varadero at the beginning of August and here's my recommendation. We took the Seafari Catamarn Cruise (79 CUC - if I remember correctly), but we upgraded to the Cruise Package that included 10 minutes with the dolphins, a chance to pet them, and a 5x7 photo that is ready for you to pick up at the end of the cruise. This upgrade is only an additional 10 CUC's and well worth it vs the 90 CUCs for an hour with the dolphins. The swim is done in a Lagoon, not the Ocean, so it does appear to be murky, but there are showers to use for free after you are done swimming if you so wish to. The Cruise includes drinks, and buffet lunch including lobster pieces on a deserted Island, good peso cigars are available, and was the only place I saw them in Cuba. Additionally for 10 CUC's you can get a full GIANT (the biggest I have ever had) Lobster Tail prepared fresh on the boat.

“used to be much better 5 years ago.... ”
I don't know what happened to this delfinario recently but now it is much less worth a visit. compared to 5 years ago they now have only 2 young dolphins who need some more training for a good show.... -did they sell the stars? the setting in a natural saltwater lagoon with connection to the sea itself is unique.

This review must come in 2 parts. Firstly, the show. 3 stars maximum, very average if a little disappointing. Have swum with dolphins 3 times now in Cuba over the years.....1st time in varadero. Varadero is well organised, busy, more pricey, but fair. The dolphins are happy and well cared for.
