  • Swimming with dolphins Cayo Santa Maria is located in Cayo Santa Maria
  • Cayo Santa Maria, which is 13 kilometers long and 2 kilometers wide, boasts 11 kilometers of excellent beaches and is linked to the big island by a causeway on the sea. For those visiting the area, Ensenachos boasts one of the best beaches.

A 48-km-long road on the sea connects the largest island of the Cuban archipelago with Santa Maria, Las Brujas, Ensenachos among other keys. There is an air terminal on Cayo Las Brujas to receive small- and medium-size planes.

The islet, which was designated a "Biosphere Reserve" by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), is inhabited by a wide range of animals, including ten endemic species.

Cayo Santa Maria is also home to large colonies of flamingos, seagulls and anhingas, as well as iguanas, mollusks and the so-called shrike bird. Other birds living on the key are the tocororo (Cuban trogon), which is Cuba's national bird, as well as woodpeckers and hawks.

Animal diversity is complemented with the region's exuberant flora, made up of 248 species, including 91 medicinal, 72 timber, 41 resign-producing and 40 ornamental species.

The key holds remnants of pre-Columbian cultures in caverns near the beaches, which boast beautiful underwater seascapes.

Another singularity of the region is the San Pascual boat, which ran aground near Cayo Frances almost 70 years ago, and has become a naval rarity, since it was made of reinforced concrete in San Francisco, California, in 1920. Also known by the local people as El Ponton, many consider the ship another islet. It offers vacationers the amenities of its 10 cabins and an enviable location to enjoy the region's attractions.

Nature itself has created the conditions for leisure, including a coral reef that attenuates the force of winds and waves, thus creating a unique environment to welcome thousands of vacationers who visit the region every year.

    “Disappointing ”
Overcrowded, rushed from one tank to another and long lines waiting turn. The water was green and the dolphins looked old and had scars. Kind of sad.

    “Results will vary... ”
As mentionned by another member, there were again 2 groups when we visited.... Our group got the quieter dolphin but also the even quieter trainer - you could barely hear his mumbling and he lacked any kind of enthusiasm for his job. Since this was only a lunch stop on the catamaran tour and we had previously done a much... More

“If you are interested in watching captive animals perform for people it may be worth your effort to see it. ”
I don't agree with watching captive animals doing tricks for people, so I wasn't really interested to begin with. I found the water to be dirty, some people slipped on the platform, they said it was slimy. The area where the dolphins are held is small and I could not enjoy the 'show' knowing the dolphins are kept there in... More

    “it was alright ”
The dolphin was cute, I was pretty disappointed that they won't let you take your camera in the water with you (waterproof/gopro/whatever) and instead want to sell their own photos/video at ridiculosly inflated prices

“Catamaran tour with dolphin experience ”
LOVED THE DOLPHIN EXPERIENCE. For 20 pesos you can also get a video, printed picture and digital copy of our picture which is a really great bang for your buck! The lobster dinner wasn't great - it was overcooked and then reheated for when our tour got there. However the chicken was VERY good! I think if we had been... More

    “Enjoyable ”
We visited the Dolpinarium as part of the Catamaran tour. A full day with meal and drinks provided. It was enjoyable. Only complaint would be the jammed number of guests per catamaran.

    “A Lifelong dream ”
This was one of the highlights of our vacation. When you get there you watch a small performance with dolphins, it was a pretty typical dolphin show. Then afterward my wife went down to the area where she would swim with a dolphin. Once in she was amazed they received high fives, claps, kisses, and rode on the dolphin as... More

“Such a nice excursion away from the resort ”
I have always wanted to swim with the dolphins and this did not disappoint. We had a lovely time - our dolphin was "Wally" and he was very sweet. We all got to swim with him, dance with him, he kissed me on the cheek and let me hug him and he pulled me around the marina on his back.... More
