  • Description Interesting Places: Hamel Alley (Callejon de Hamel), Havana . Cuba

It is located on the Aramburu and Hospital streets in Centro Habana. This alley was built in 1990 with the idea of creating a space for the African culture. The initiator of this project was the local sculptor and painter Salvador Gonzales. In the Hamel alley art is made by ordinary tools showing a group of images and representatives of the African beliefs. In Callejon de Hamel, visitors can find products related to Afro-Cuban works and rites. This place is also a space of interaction between art and community due to the festivals organized with the participation of children and neighbors of the area.

  • Hamel Alley (Callejon de Hamel) is located in Havana
  • Capital of Cuba and the country's administrative, political, cultural and scientific center, it is also the capital of two provinces: City of Havana and Havana. Though only around 280 square miles (727 square kilometers) in size-0.65 percent of the archipelago's total area.

The Old Havana and system of forts led UNESCO to declare it a part of world heritage in 1982. Founded on its present site in 1519, the settlement of San Cristobal de La Habana prospered mainly due to its bay, which was a natural port of call for ships sailing to and from the New World. Starting in 1634, because of its strategic location, San Cristobal de La Habana was considered the key to the New World-as attested to by royal letters patent-and the main defense of the West Indies.

The Cuban capital consists of an immense number of buildings in a wide range of architectural styles, built in the course of nearly five centuries. These styles range from the pre-baroque to the baroque, neo-Gothic, neoclassical, eclectic, art noveau and art-deco, to the modern.

Alejo Carpentier, one of Cuba's most famous authors, called it "the city of columns" and focused attention on its streets, which he considered a perennially rich show of life, humanity and contrasts that was bound to entertain any observer.

Over 14 kilometers of excellent beaches lie to the east of the Cuban capital. To the south, a green belt contributes to a healthful atmosphere.

    Culture
This project dates from 1990 and highlights the importance of African influence on Cuban culture. It began as an initiative of sculptor and painter Salvador Gonzales, who painted a mural allegoric to Afro-Cuban culture together with a group of friends. The idea was to reclaim a public space as a forum that would serve as a cultural and didactic platform within the community. Every Sunday at noon, a rumba session is held with the participation of important groups

“Not worth a long visit ”
Very unique site completely decorated with murals and bathtubs by a noted Cuban artist (Hamel) who was influenced by Afro-Cuban religion. Enough said!

    “Santeria and art combined ”
This short street is home to artist Salvador Gonzalez Escalona. You will be able to meet the artist, view his work, and even purchase a piece to take home. His assistant will give you an education about Santeria, the most widely practiced religion in Cuba.

    “free rumba performance ”
We went on a Sunday to see the free rumba show at noon. We realized that the group, Rumba Morena, was the same one that we saw on Saturday at the Conjunto Folklorico Nacional de Cuba in Vedado. They were pretty good and high energy with a big group of drummers and singers. However, we didn't stay long, because there... More

    “Amazing and authentic... ”
I loved this place. It was colourful and fun! The live band and dancers were so spectacular that unless you see it for yourself, you just can't understand it! My only complaint is that there isn't any shade. be smarter than I was and bring a hat. Other than that, I loved it!!

“The place to learn about Santeria ”
This is a very colorful place in the middle of a Havana neighborhood. There are dancers in colorful costumes who put on a short show, at least they do for the tour buses. The can is passed, and most people put in 1 CUC. There is also artwork and CD's for sale here. The highlight of this visit for me... More

    “Great Cultural Experience ”
Visited every Sunday - Arrive early and pay 1-2 CUC for a chair, as far left as possible to stay out of the sun... Bring a hand fan, and a few dollars for a cold beer / snack in the local small restaurant located at the entrance... Great music, but VERY crowded... Definitely worth it.

    “Great Time ”
We were given an introduction to Santeria by a man who spoke fluent English. We also had the opportunity to see some live dancing. This was way much better than what I was expecting.

“A trip to the bright fantastic ”
Callejon de Hamel is billed as "the shortest street in Havana," but it is filled with fantastical art drawn from the traditions of Santeria. Santeria is a spiritual religion brought over by the first African slaves and is now incorporated into Cuban Catholicism. Its colorful artwork celebrates the forces of life not too dissimilar from Native American culture. The short... More

“"Crazy" artist created a neighborhood sanctuary ”
This small street has been transformed into art by Salvador Gonzales Escalona, a self-taught artist sometimes considered crazy. His decorated street has become a music and dance venue as well. The paintings and sculpture cover the walls and the surrounding buildings and depict Afro-Cuban mystical and religious traditions. There is a small studio, and some works are for sale, but... More
