  • Description Caves: Great Cavern of Santo Tomas, Pinar del Rio. Cuba

In 1954, Dr. Antonio Nuñez Jiménez led the first expedition to this site, near the tourist area of Viñales, in the Sierra del Rosario. Back then, no one could imagine that these caverns would be admired later on as the most important in Cuba, not only due to their magnitude of 45 kilometres, but also because of the scientific wealth they treasure. Later on several historic events took place, because in 1959 Fidel Castro founded the first troops of military farmers, known as Los Malagones. The cooperative movement became a reality with the Moncada farm and in 1984 the National School of Speleology (Escuela Nacional de Espeleología) was founded by initiative of General Raúl Castro Ruz, Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias).

  • Great Cavern of Santo Tomas is located in Pinar del Rio
  • Because of the richness, variety and excellent preservation of its flora and fauna, Pinar del Río is called "the garden of Cuba." UNESCO has declared the Guanahacabibes Peninsula and the Rosario Mountain Range biosphere reserves, and the Viñales Valley a world cultural heritage. The land in which the world's best tobacco is grown also offers you wonderful opportunities for scuba diving, hunting, fishing or simply relaxing and tanning at the beach.,

Since the 19th century, Havana residents have been drawn by the natural beauty of Vueltabajo, and they have flocked to Los Portales Cave, to San Diego de los Baños, to receive the benefits of its mineral-medicinal and thermal waters; and to the Viñales Valley, to gaze at its natural beauty.,

Pinar del Río is just 174 km (108 miles) from Havana. A good highway links the two cities. The architecture in its historic center is eclectic, and its low houses in gentle colors, whose porches seem to form an endless gallery, have great charm. On the outskirts of the city, modern buildings break its horizontal lines. ,

When visiting Pinar del Río's provincial capital, be sure to tour the Guayabita del Pinar Distillery, where the drink of the same name is still made by hand, following an age-old recipe; the Guash Palace, the Milanés Theater and the Rumayor Cabaret.,

Quiet, comfortable hotels have been built in some of the most beautiful spots in Pinar del Río, to facilitate your enjoyment of Nature. Cayo Levisa has a delightful, sunny beach, and the province also offer excellent opportunities for scuba diving, hunting and fishing.

    Santo Tomas Cavern
The Indian Cave, crossed by the San Juan river (navigable), and that of Juan Miguel, both in the vicinities, and the Santo Tomás Cavern System, with more than 45 kilometers of galleries buried in the near Sierra de Quemados, they constitute places of unquestionable value in a conceived natural space, apparently, for the realization of walks for ecotourism paths

    Cavern Santo Tomas
This cave is 10 times better than La Cueva del Indio, a tourist trap. Cueva San Tomas, a nice 15km drive West of Vinales, is the longest in Latin America. They give you the proper gear (helmet with lamp) and guide you through an easy 2 hours tour (some people come here from all around the world and actually spend weeks in the caves (they are 47 kms long!).
