It is located in the house of the ranch where the American writer lived for many years. The house has been preserved as it was when Hemingway was living there; everything is kept just as he had it. Personal objects, tens of thousands of books and photographs, as well as some “trophies” won in his frequent hunting adventures are some of the attractions.

  • Ernest Hemingway Museum is located in Havana
  • Capital of Cuba and the country's administrative, political, cultural and scientific center, it is also the capital of two provinces: City of Havana and Havana. Though only around 280 square miles (727 square kilometers) in size-0.65 percent of the archipelago's total area.

The Old Havana and system of forts led UNESCO to declare it a part of world heritage in 1982. Founded on its present site in 1519, the settlement of San Cristobal de La Habana prospered mainly due to its bay, which was a natural port of call for ships sailing to and from the New World. Starting in 1634, because of its strategic location, San Cristobal de La Habana was considered the key to the New World-as attested to by royal letters patent-and the main defense of the West Indies.

The Cuban capital consists of an immense number of buildings in a wide range of architectural styles, built in the course of nearly five centuries. These styles range from the pre-baroque to the baroque, neo-Gothic, neoclassical, eclectic, art noveau and art-deco, to the modern.

Alejo Carpentier, one of Cuba's most famous authors, called it "the city of columns" and focused attention on its streets, which he considered a perennially rich show of life, humanity and contrasts that was bound to entertain any observer.

Over 14 kilometers of excellent beaches lie to the east of the Cuban capital. To the south, a green belt contributes to a healthful atmosphere.

    Hemingway´s home
This was Hemingway´s home, and his last wife´s Mary Welsh, for more than twenty years. Now, it is the most important museum in the world dedicated to the celebrated writer, a passionate and revolutionary man. Here, he wrote "The Old Man and the Sea". The museum displays lots of Hemingway´s personal objects, thousands of books, pictures, animal heads or his "Royal" typewriter -the guides will tell us how Hemingway used to write standing and barefoot-. In the garden, there are spectacular trees like flamboyants, palm-trees, mangos, even a big ceiba -the Iro ko, a god-like tree adored in "santería"-. All in that house leads the visitor to the Havana and international life of Ernest, who in a television interview defined himself with a term for Cuban wandering dogs, this way: "Yo soy un cubano sato" ("I am a Cuban stray dog").

    Ernest Hemingway Museum
The Ernest Hemingway Museum offers a plethora of information about the writer's life during the time he spent in Cuba, with many of his personal possessions on display. Along with the pieces of furniture and personal objects, there are also a number of works of art exhibited in the spirit of the famous saying: "First one must persevere".

    Ernest Hemingway Museum
There are many important museums in the city of Havana and one of the most popular of these is the Ernest Hemingway Museum (also known as the Museo Ernest Hemingway). Located in a villa previously owned by the writer himself, villa Finca Vigia was purchased in the year 1949 by Ernest Hemingway, where he spent a large part of his life thereafter. The Finca Vigia was the birthplace of many of Hemingway’s best works, including For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Sea, and is a fitting location for the museum. The Museo Ernest Hemingway is located in the area known as San Francisco de Paula, which is situated Ernest Hemingway museumaround 15 kilometres away from the center of the city. It can easily be accessed using the Carretera Central motorway. The museum features a number of possessions of the author as well as a library containing the author’s original collection of books. The Museo Ernest Hemingway has been preserved exactly as the author had left it, giving visitors an insight into the life and times of this Nobel Laureate. The museum is open to the general public, with an entrance fee of $3 which is collected at the venue. The museum timings are normally from 10 am to 4 pm from Monday to Saturday and from 9 am to 1 pm on Sunday.

    The home of a genius
We are literature lovers, so the visit to Ernest Hemingway was a must for us. It's known as the Fincia Vigia if you're going to ask the locals or a taxi driver about it and this is where some of the best novels and novellas of all time were penned. Just wish we could have gone inside!

    “Disappointing ”
Having read about Hemmingway this was on our to do list. The house is situated in large grounds but unfortunately you can only look inside through windows rather than go inside. This took away part of the joy.

“It is closed on Sundays. ”
My guidebook said it was open on Sundays, but that apparently changed since it was printed. I'm posting this to save others the long drive out there on a Sunday. Because it was closed and I was leaving the next day, I wasn't able to see the Hemingway Museum, so this review is simply some helpful advice. I've given it... More

    “Hemingway in Cuba ”
This was quite an interesting experience to learn about Hemingway from the Cuban perspective. Seeing his home and the way it was preserved as though he was still living there was a special experience. He is still highly regarded and respected in Cuba for his simple ways of "hanging out" with the locals. The home is in excellent condition and... More

    “"Significiant" but disappointing ”
I wish authorities would charge a large enough fee to permit Finca Vigia to be stabilized so visitors could actually enter. It felt really odd to be walking around, looking in the windows of someone's home. To the extent one can gain an understanding of Hemingway and his time in Cuba by glimpsing a few of his possessions through the... More

“A place to remember of the american writer ”
It is kind of far from the city, about 30 to 40 minutes drive. The place is preserved the same way Hemingway had it. You can still see his boat name after his daughter. It is worthy to go see part of this great author´s life in Castro;s land.

    “Breathtaking experience! ”
Being a former English teacher, I loved reading Hemingway and learning about his life. He had a beautiful home and his 9000 book Library is amazing. It is very peaceful and you can see why he loved Cuba. Saw his boat Pilar and his pet cemetery. I will be going to Key West and will visit the museum there. No... More

    “Hemingway history ”
Although we were unable to enter the house,we viewed everything from outside through many windows. The guide was knowledgeable but she sometimes spoke to us in Spanish although her English was excellent. A look back into the history of a brilliant but troubled writer.

“Wow ..not to be missed ! ”
I felt very privileged to be able to visit from the outside Hemingway's home ,still the same as though he left for a Dachari at the Floridita .You can look thru the open doors to see Hemingway's books ,home life and animal mounts on the walls which he shot in Africa.

“A trip back in time to his house. ”
Put this high on your list if you are a Hemingway fan, or like seeing perfectly preserved homes. They have kept it just as left it, and while you van not enter the house, there are many open doors and windows that allow for great photos.
