  • Description: Sevilla Hotel Cuba

One of Havana’s Oldest hotels (the establishment turned 100 in March of 2008), the Sevilla has many stories to tell and is privileged in more ways than one. A popular meeting place for Cuban high society from the time of its inauguration in 1908, in the late thirties the property came to be owned by an Uruguayan with ties to the Italian-American mafia (a notorious character like Santo Trafficante owned shares in the venture). Mobsters, however, would not be the only well-known figures to frequent the hotel: in addition to Al Cappone, luminaries like Enrico Caruso, Graham Greene and Josephine Baker grace the long guestbook. The Sevilla is situated off Prado, close to Malecón and to places of historical and cultural interest such as the Capitolio and Gran Teatro (a short walk north or south, respectively, takes you to these locations). It is also well located for touring Old Havana and its colonial centre: nearby Obispo takes you to Plaza de Armas, one of the epicenters of the sightseeing circuit. Inside, the large, spacious lobby combines elegance with a welcoming, cosmopolitan atmosphere which is altogether refreshing. Unlike other establishments in the area, the appeal of this spot is not exclusively visual or historic: in addition to the traditional Cuban music performed by a trio (a nearly ubiquitous offer), the hotel organizes salsa and campesino music days (when a grille is set up in the patio), and a professional troupe stages flamenco performances twice a week. Once a month, original silent films are projected on a screen assembled in the lobby area, to an amusing piano accompaniment that tries to set the mood, attesting to the establishment’s inventive commitment to culture. Other attractive features include the palatial Roof Garden, an enormous and supremely elegant restaurant with great views of the city, an arcade with shops which adjoins the lobby at its far end, a money exchange locale, and a meeting room which can seat up to 45 people. The hotel is also one of three in the area that boasts a swimming pool, and the poolside facilities are surprisingly well equipped (there is a modern gym, a sauna and massage service). With enough atmosphere to please visitors seeking historically interesting properties, the Sevilla combines class, a lively cultural scene and an excellent location.

    Review about Sevilla Hotel
    Poor Rockhampton

“A once grand but now a tired poorly maintained property.. ”
At first impressions the lobby and lower floor show great promise but this quickly evaporates when you get your room. Dark grungy, lack of decent lighting (bedside lamps missing), smell of tobacco permeating the room, TV barely operable, no remote. Basically a total lack of maintenance - And don't tell me they cannot afford upgrades! This hotel is a 50% partnership with Accord and they have the cash! The staff are aloof and don't really seem to care less......One notable exception though! The customer service gal Anabel Garcia is a real gem and stands head and shoulders above the rest of the crew. She has the worst job in the place - fielding the endless complaints from dis-satisfied guests. I think the attitude of the hotel is simply that they can fill the place without cleaning it up but this will be short sighted - Competition is on the way!

“4 star should be 2 star”
On arrival at the hotel the foyer was quite impressive. When we were shown to our room we were very dissapointed after such a long journey and the time change we just need a rest. The room was on the 2bd floor and immediately we could smell the damp, the bath was rusty and the toilet did not flush properly. The first thing was to take off the bedspread god knows when they were last cleaned. We suffered our first night then next morning decided to move rooms. then sent to the 8th floor the room didnt smell and it was a slight improvement, again threw off the bedspread had some strange looking stains, then tried to use the loo it overflowed and poured into the bathroom (not pleasant) 3rd room also on 8th floor finally was acceptable no 819 Entertainment was good live music each evening and even at breakfast. We spent 4 nights at the hotel and only really used it for sleeping, such a shame a beautiful old building like this hotel should be aloud to deteriate. The staff were very pleasant and apologetic, and tried to help. Good position in the old town. Use this hotel but put your expectations too high.
