  • Description: Mercure Sevilla Hotel Cuba

One of Havana’s Oldest hotels (the establishment turned 100 in March of 2008), the Sevilla has many stories to tell and is privileged in more ways than one. A popular meeting place for Cuban high society from the time of its inauguration in 1908, in the late thirties the property came to be owned by an Uruguayan with ties to the Italian-American mafia (a notorious character like Santo Trafficante owned shares in the venture). Mobsters, however, would not be the only well-known figures to frequent the hotel: in addition to Al Cappone, luminaries like Enrico Caruso, Graham Greene and Josephine Baker grace the long guestbook. The Sevilla is situated off Prado, close to Malecón and to places of historical and cultural interest such as the Capitolio and Gran Teatro (a short walk north or south, respectively, takes you to these locations). It is also well located for touring Old Havana and its colonial centre: nearby Obispo takes you to Plaza de Armas, one of the epicenters of the sightseeing circuit. Inside, the large, spacious lobby combines elegance with a welcoming, cosmopolitan atmosphere which is altogether refreshing. Unlike other establishments in the area, the appeal of this spot is not exclusively visual or historic: in addition to the traditional Cuban music performed by a trio (a nearly ubiquitous offer), the hotel organizes salsa and campesino music days (when a grille is set up in the patio), and a professional troupe stages flamenco performances twice a week. Once a month, original silent films are projected on a screen assembled in the lobby area, to an amusing piano accompaniment that tries to set the mood, attesting to the establishment’s inventive commitment to culture. Other attractive features include the palatial Roof Garden, an enormous and supremely elegant restaurant with great views of the city, an arcade with shops which adjoins the lobby at its far end, a money exchange locale, and a meeting room which can seat up to 45 people. The hotel is also one of three in the area that boasts a swimming pool, and the poolside facilities are surprisingly well equipped (there is a modern gym, a sauna and massage service). With enough atmosphere to please visitors seeking historically interesting properties, the Sevilla combines class, a lively cultural scene and an excellent location.

      Havana Airport

José Martí International Airport (IATA: HAV, ICAO: MUHA), sometimes known by its former name Rancho-Boyeros Airport, is located 15 km (9 mi) southwest of Havana, Cuba, and is a hub for Cubana de Aviación, Aerogaviota, and Aero Caribbean, and former Latin American hub for Aeroflot Soviet Airlines.[2] It is Cuba's main international and domestic gateway, and serves several million passengers each year. The airport lies in the municipality of Boyeros and connects Havana with the rest of the Caribbean, North, Central and South America, Europe, and one destination in Africa. It is named in memory of patriot and poet José Martí. In the 1960s the airport was bombed by B-26 aircraft from Brigade 2506, a CIA-sponsored group of Cuban exiles attempting to liberate Cuba from Fidel Castro. Cubans are not allowed to own aircraft or use the airport for either private or commercial flight. Only government-owned aircraft are allowed to use the facilities. There are currently four passenger terminals in use at the airport, plus a freight terminal.[3] Terminal 1 is used primarily for domestic flights. Terminal 2 opened in 1988, primarily for charter flights to the United States. Ten years later on April 27, 1998, the International Terminal 3 was opened by Canada's then-Prime Minister, Jean Chrétien, and former Cuban president, Fidel Castro. International Terminal 3 offers many modern facilities and jetways that the former international Terminal 1 did not provide. Terminal 5 is operated by Aerocaribbean. Today, Copa Airlines is the foreign airline with most flights to the airport, operating 34 flights a week (roughly 5 daily flights) from Panama City, Panama, and Bogota, Colombia. The airport is operated by Empresa Cubana de Aeropuertos y Servicios Aeronáuticos (ECASA).

        Poor Poor

“A once grand but now a tired poorly maintained property.. ”
At first impressions the lobby and lower floor show great promise but this quickly evaporates when you get your room. Dark grungy, lack of decent lighting (bedside lamps missing), smell of tobacco permeating the room, TV barely operable, no remote. Basically a total lack of maintenance - And don't tell me they cannot afford upgrades! This hotel is a 50% partnership with Accord and they have the cash! The staff are aloof and don't really seem to care less......One notable exception though! The customer service gal Anabel Garcia is a real gem and stands head and shoulders above the rest of the crew. She has the worst job in the place - fielding the endless complaints from dis-satisfied guests. I think the attitude of the hotel is simply that they can fill the place without cleaning it up but this will be short sighted - Competition is on the way!

“4 star should be 2 star”
On arrival at the hotel the foyer was quite impressive. When we were shown to our room we were very dissapointed after such a long journey and the time change we just need a rest. The room was on the 2bd floor and immediately we could smell the damp, the bath was rusty and the toilet did not flush properly. The first thing was to take off the bedspread god knows when they were last cleaned. We suffered our first night then next morning decided to move rooms. then sent to the 8th floor the room didnt smell and it was a slight improvement, again threw off the bedspread had some strange looking stains, then tried to use the loo it overflowed and poured into the bathroom (not pleasant) 3rd room also on 8th floor finally was acceptable no 819 Entertainment was good live music each evening and even at breakfast. We spent 4 nights at the hotel and only really used it for sleeping, such a shame a beautiful old building like this hotel should be aloud to deteriate. The staff were very pleasant and apologetic, and tried to help. Good position in the old town. Use this hotel but put your expectations too high.

        “Needs maintenance! ”
We stayed in a superior room for 3 nights in Nov 2014 and had to be moved twice due to flooding from an air conditioner malfunction and no hot water. This was once a grand hotel but is in desperate need of repair. For a nightly rate of $270 Cdn we expected a better experience. It is in an ideal location but there are other options in the same area of old Havana.

        “A Work in Progress? ”
Don't be fooled by the 'Mercure' label - this offering is light years away from what it could (and should) be. The place is crying out for some maintenance and 'tender loving care'. Its best feature is the lively lobby/lounge/bar area on the ground floor, but proceed then to the rooms, and sadly it is a different story. They are located around an enclosed courtyard, which brings to mind a prison. The rooms are not large, but that would not matter if there had been some attempt to modernise them. The lack of maintenance is apparent as soon as you try to work almost anything - electric sockets hanging off the wall, blown lightbulbs, unreliable plumbing, tired linen, towels and furnishings, curtains that won't pull properly. The newest item was the TV, and that did work, but not of course the remote. The breakfast (taken on the top floor in our case) was not too crowded, but the buffet selection disappointed for a hotel of this supposed quality. Reception staff seemed a little aggressive and defensive, and could not, for example, supply a town map ('you'll have to buy one at the shop in the arcade'). Other staff were fine - friendly if not 100% responsive - but a special word of praise for Julio (one of the senior porters) who could not have been more helpful, as he took care of our bags on the last afternoon, and suggested how we could fill our time. We stayed at both the beginning and end of our vacation in Cuba. At the beginning we were ready to accept this is the best you can expect at the moment in Cuba, but by the end, we knew this not to be so, and the poor impressions of the rooms at this hotel were sadly reinforced in our minds. The location in the old city is excellent, and with a major investment in modernisation by the owners, this place could be a gem...

“Choose a higher floor room ”
The hotel is at best a 3*. The building is beautifully situated in Old Havana and the ground floor lobby and lounge is very comfortable with live music every day. We had to change room after the first night which was on the 2nd floor overlooking an enclosed yard of sorts, making the room very dark, but worst of all it was by the lift shaft and could hardly get a nights sleep because of the noise. The bedspread was also not clean at all. However we were given another room on the eighth floor overlooking the city and the sea and was altogether a vast improvement. On the plus side the staff were always extremely friendly and helpful and breakfast was acceptable with a good choice, and the live music was fantastic. Would I go again? Only if I could choose a room near the top of the building.

        “Great location, average service ”
Excellent location in old Havana, next to too many historical places. Big clean rooms, not so fancy but great to what's around it. The breakfast is not so good, and the room service is slow. I had to ask for towels around 5 times and waited more than hour and did not get it! They miss also to offer some services that makes the tourist more comfy in his room. e.g. I couldn't make an internal phone call because I have to put 1$ deposit! Well, I believe that they can still open a phone line for a tourist instead of making me go down and pay this 1$ :-) few things like that...
