Raquel Hotel is located very near the Old Square, in the heart of Old Havana. The romantic atmosphere of the building proposed by its art nouveau style and expressive eclectic projections highlight the architecture of the building. It’s the biblical name and some of its spaces allegorically evoke the Hebrew culture. Three floors and a terrace compose the hotel. The majestic sculpture of the ground floor along with the marble columns catches the eye. It has an elegant specialized restaurant.

    Havana Airport

José Martí International Airport (IATA: HAV, ICAO: MUHA), sometimes known by its former name Rancho-Boyeros Airport, is located 15 km (9 mi) southwest of Havana, Cuba, and is a hub for Cubana de Aviación, Aerogaviota, and Aero Caribbean, and former Latin American hub for Aeroflot Soviet Airlines.[2] It is Cuba's main international and domestic gateway, and serves several million passengers each year. The airport lies in the municipality of Boyeros and connects Havana with the rest of the Caribbean, North, Central and South America, Europe, and one destination in Africa. It is named in memory of patriot and poet José Martí. In the 1960s the airport was bombed by B-26 aircraft from Brigade 2506, a CIA-sponsored group of Cuban exiles attempting to liberate Cuba from Fidel Castro. Cubans are not allowed to own aircraft or use the airport for either private or commercial flight. Only government-owned aircraft are allowed to use the facilities. There are currently four passenger terminals in use at the airport, plus a freight terminal.[3] Terminal 1 is used primarily for domestic flights. Terminal 2 opened in 1988, primarily for charter flights to the United States. Ten years later on April 27, 1998, the International Terminal 3 was opened by Canada's then-Prime Minister, Jean Chrétien, and former Cuban president, Fidel Castro. International Terminal 3 offers many modern facilities and jetways that the former international Terminal 1 did not provide. Terminal 5 is operated by Aerocaribbean. Today, Copa Airlines is the foreign airline with most flights to the airport, operating 34 flights a week (roughly 5 daily flights) from Panama City, Panama, and Bogota, Colombia. The airport is operated by Empresa Cubana de Aeropuertos y Servicios Aeronáuticos (ECASA).

      “Rock hard beds ”
As we had already booked a tour through Cuba, We stayed twice in this stunning hotel during our 2 nights in Havana. Room 202 has single beds, and we found them to be rock hard. I ended up with welts all over me by the morning. Hmmm. On our return we had room 201, the ceiling was mouldy and beds felt damp with a musty smell. The breakfasts could be improved, pretty ordinary. The hotel and location itself are both excellent, but infortunately next time I would definitely upgrade for a decent nights sleep.Staff were very polite and helpful. This would be a magnificent hotel if it could get itself at least a four star rating.

“Good location but It is not worthy! ”
+ Good Location + Helpfull and kindly staff + Clean room - It was raining and our room got flooded, Water entered the room underneath the balcony's door - Bed: the sheet was realy old and It was all torn, there were some dark spots on the sheet. Instead of having one sheet for each single bed, they put two sheets in each bed, in a horizontal way, maybe they don't have the proper sheet for a single bed. Making a mass every night on the bed was inevitable. - The bed was old and very noisy - They have only two rooms for couples - They announce internet on their website, but don't count on It, It's not true. There is only one computer in the lobby, this computer requires a internet prepaid card, but they don't have the internet card to sell - The breakfast was something, unbeliavable, unbearable. We read in advance about the breakfest, a lot of complains about It, but even then, It surprised us in a huge negative way - What an expensive hotel, that offers the customers nothing besides good location - DON'T STAY AT THIS HOTEL!!!

Attention when booking as there are rooms without window. Some rooms do not smell good. Is very close: plaza vieja; Plaza de la Cathedral and Plaza de Armas and calle Obispo. 10 minutes walking to parque Central (Capitólio)

But ensure you book a room with windows! We got a room with no window for our first night in Havana after a long trip and this was not the best experience. They moved us the day to another room. This was a huge difference! Staff are really friendly and helpful. Not one the best breakfast I have had recently.

Two stars only because of the claustrophobic, cell like nature of room without windows which was also in urgent need of refurb'. Strongly advise to book room with a view! Wish we had taken more note of advice given by other reviewers.

“Great location, great building, great effort ”
This habaguanex hotel is wonderfully situated in between the plaza nueva, plaza de la cathedral and plaza San Francisco - this means in the heart of La Habana Vieja. The impressive old bank building was nicely restored. However, in the rooms the 'state owned standard' takes over. Still nicely restored, but ao a creaking bed, poor lighting, oldish curtains and linen wear, ? The 'state owned feeling' also goes for the friendly but slow, semi-interested staff and the so-so breakfast (2 days out of 3 'no butter today'). But when in La Habana you should stay in Vieja, so Raquel is a good place.

      “Not really romantic ... ”
We spent the first days of our honeymoon in this "romantic" hotel. There was a special honeymoon offer containing more then 10 bonus services. We received two of them after complaining three times at the reception. The AC did not work very well, matrace did not fit to bed, gym was closed, and the "friendly" housekeeping service just tries to grab your money ... We changed to a casa in Vedado after 3 days for half ( great list here: ), next time we will directly go into a casa.

      “A bit hit-and-miss”
The public areas in this hotel are certainly stunning, but our room was dingy and smelt damp with no window and little ventilation. The buffet breakfasts were not the best we had in Cuba - a bit more fresh fruit would be welcome, at the very least, and the coffee was grim - though the staff at the Raquel were all quite friendly and helpful, and the location is perfect for orientating yourself in Old Havana. On balance, it was a reasonable place to kick off our three-week holiday, but it really wouldn't take much to iron out the significant creases that are currently letting the place down.

This hotel is beautiful and location is just perfect. Unfortunately we didn't get any sleep,we got bitten by bed bugs all night long and air condition didn't work.Room was nice but needs more cleaning, curtains and area around windows was full of dust.Food is not the best in this hotel too.For breakfast they are serving cold food and there is not anything suitable for vegeterians.I have to mention nice waiter Wilbert who made an affort and I got the vegeterian dish.Customer service in this hotel was really good, the best we got in Cuba, especially receptionists Liset and Tania, they were really helpful.

“Lovely position, perfect piece of history ”
Hotel Raquel is architecturally beautiful, the setting in the old town is my preferred option compared to the concrete modern blocks in New Havana. Hotel Raquel is fairly quirky, as is most things in Havana. The rooms are okay, although, it seemed quite strange to enter a hotel room with no windows, but hey we survived. My recommendation when booking was that it was the best hotel in Havana, I may beg to differ. But don't be put off, I would stay again.

      “Would definitely come back”
Such a lovely hotel in great part of old Havana. Nice roof top area to chill out in - gets a nice breeze in the late afternoon. Rooms are basic but clean. Shower pressure fantastic and bathrooms were clean. Breakfasts are basic too but ask for an omelette - they were good. Air con worked ok. Could hear a little bit of street noise late at night but added to the atmosphere. Was lovely walking around the neighbourhood at night. Checked out a few other hotels while in Havana- lots looked very busy and touristy - Very happy with Hotel Raquel.

“Very friendly staff and great location ”
Hotel has a great location in the old city (Havana Vjeja), with beautiful Spanish clonial architecture. Rooms are nice and clean, choice of food is not very big but it is enough if you are staying in Havana for couple of days. We were in Cuba on our honeymoon and stayed 5 nights in this hotel. We got the honeymoon package which included suite room, discount in some restaurants, free entry in some museums, bottle of vine in our room and a free dinner on the rooftop. Staff is very friendly and also very helpful. You can ask them for any information you need.

      “Elegant surroundings ”
Loved staying at the Raquel. It certainly provided old fashioned sense of elegance. The building itself from the outside is beautiful in the heart of old Havana. The inside is tastefully decorated and the stained glass ceiling is a must see. It has a lovely roof top terrace, unfortunately we didn't have a chance to do cocktails up there which others have recommended. We found the people who worked there extremely helpful and did advise us to use the banks to change money at a better rate. We had a room with a view of the street below but we're not bothered by noise. The room was spacious, with air con, TV and fridge. The ensuite was also a reasonable size and loved the rainforest shower head. As previous reviews have mentioned, the breakfast is not's adequate and there should be something there to keep you going till lunch. Would definitely go back as it was a very good location for all we wanted to do.

“Colonial style charm and character ”
If you are looking for all the mod cons of a chain hotel then don't stay here - but if you are looking for charm and character and excellent service with smiles and lovely high ceilings, shuttered windows, central location and a real feel of old Havana then this is your place We stayed on the second floor with a small balcony room overlooking the side street The breakfasts are very basic The bar is well stocked, they make brilliant cocktails and it's all very reasonably priced There is no internet The location is excellent, security on the door, walking distance to everything, lots of bars and restaurants nearby Attractive roof terrace with seating area, ideally could do with a small plunge pool The whole place is a little jaded but we had a wonderful stay and most important for us is a convenient location, smiley friendly staff and clean bedding - we would recommend this to friends and we would return if ever visiting Havana again

We were moved into this hotel due to a Cuban Government conference in our booked hotel. I was very unhappy about being bounced but the Raquel turned out to be a good move. Very well placed for Old Havana and a beautiful, well restored colonial building. Service was good and breakfast excellent.. Far better than staying in one of the newer hotels across the city.

      “Beautiful sanctuary ”
We stayed at Hotel Raquel for four nights in May. Granted, some of the negative reviews for this hotel on Trip Advisor have a point - the breakfast food is terrible for instance, I firmly hold the view that you need to go to Cuba realizing these people do the best they can with what they have got and not expect perfection. Other than the food, of which it can be a struggle in general to find variety and good food in Havana in our experience, the room and the staff were excellent during our stay. Very good Mojitos (and at very great price!) at the bar. Would recommend this hotel in a beautiful historic building within a fantastic location. Oh and also, internet speed is so slow not worth using it. That, again, is not unique to Hotel Raquel obviously but an issue in Cuba in general. Enjoy!!

The building is grand and we loved its style, especially the old fashioned lift (elevator). We did have a room with a window but this meant we could hear the hustle and bustle from the city streets. This didn't bother us but bear it in mind. If you have some time, enjoy relaxing on the roof terrace. It's a great to relax and spend some time in the late afternoon with a drink from the bar and a book. The bar is handy too, where you get bottled water for the fridge. There is a computer in the hotel for internet but it wasn't working when we were there ( common in Cuba) and there is no wifi. If you need to book some trips, there's a travel agent desk at the front of the hotel. The staff are really friendly. Separate to the travel agent, the hotel (via the bell boy) organised a classic car tour for us. It was amazing! We had a 1940s Ford convertible for the morning with an English speaking guide who took us around the main sites. It was great fun and we had a blast. We really enjoyed our stay at the hotel and I'd strongly recommend it.

      “Great Location ”
We were moved to the Hotel Raquel as our original hotel was fully booked, thank goodness we were as the original hotel was in the middle of the main square with lots of noise and traffic. The Hotel Racquel is in a quiet location just off the old square where you can taste the delights of the micro brewery - great after a hot days site seeing and only a 5 minute walk from the main square. The hotel itself is beautiful and very clean. We had a room without a window and although it was a bit strange it was very quiet, the room was very basic there was plenty of hot water and a good shower. The breakfast left a lot to be desired and the service in the restaurant and bar was quite variable, but would still recommend the hotel for its authenticity.

The hotel is beautiful, be sure to take in the lobby and stained glass paneled skylight. We stayed in a wrap around room which offered great views and a comfortable bed. The staff was absolutely wonderful. Friendly service who couldn't do enough to make our stay memorable. Morning breakfast was included and a great way to start each day.

“Beautiful hotel in the heart of Old Havana ”
We stayed here on our last night as a treat. We had read about the rooms with no windows so we called in at the start of our holiday to have a look around and request a room with windows. We were rewarded with a stay in a beautiful room 204 named Sara. I think it was a suite as it was massive! When we arrived the safe was missing but within minutes the bellboy returned with a safe on a trolley which he installed in the wardrobe. The only thing which lets the hotel down is the food. We ordered room service and got some chicken soup and a cheese and ham sandwich. The sandwich was inedible it was so hard. In the morning the breakfast buffet looked all dried up too. We ordered an omelette which was cooked fresh and that was fine. A bonus was the breakfast was included in the accommodation cost- a first for us in Cuba. The rooftop garden was amazing with lovely wooden furniture and brilliant views. The whole hotel is filled with well cared for pot plants. The gardener changed the plants round so that the inside plants get some sun on the roof terrace. All of the staff were friendly and made us feel welcome. I would definitely stay here again if I return to Havana.

“A Bubble Experience or el Sabor de Cuba”
What kind of travel experience are you seeking? Is it another 5 star hotel chain experience that in reality could be in any city anywhere in the world? Or are you truly wanting to experience the real ?sabor? (taste) of Havana? If you are an adventurer then read on. The Hotel Raquel, built in 1908 was honoured by the Office of the City Historian of Havana as being worthy of being restored to it's former glory. Profits made from the hotel in turn go to restoring other outstanding historical buildings in Havana Vieja. Words such as "resurgence" "reemergence" "renaissance" "reawakening" enthusiastically come to mind when asked to describe the Hotel Raquel. This small Art Nouveau Hotel Raquel is an architectural gem, situated in the heart of old Havana, just two blocks from the Plaza Vieja. Cuba is rising out of the rubble and proudly rebuilding it's finest structures. Hotel Raquel is an exquisite example of this metamorphosis. It is indeed a beautiful butterfly spreading its' wings to be admired by the world. From the moment you step up a few stairs through the impressive tall solid wooden doors and feel the cool marble underfoot, you enter another world, that of Art Nouveau. The Art Nouveau period dated from the1880?s to pre WW1 not to be confused with Art Deco. The hotel originally was built for Jewish guests and so you will see Jewish artifacts throughout including the biblical naming of suites! As a photographer visually the lobby is a feast. The stunning tall columns led my eyes upward to a massive rectangular stained glass dome and an atrium of 3 floors of suites. Next I found myself admiring the wooden reception area. Right beside it is an old-fashioned decorative metal elevator that works perfectly unless someone has forgotten to close the gate completely. You learn very quickly to close it properly! Find the hidden treasure of the hotel, an "escalera de caracol? or in this case a wooden spiral staircase (not metal). Personally I think this piece of working art should be moved and show-cased where it can visually be enjoyed by all! This was our second time staying at the Hotel Raquel. The staff were excellent and genuinely made us feel welcomed again. Our room was immaculately cleaned daily in a very timely manner with fresh linens and beds adorned with decorative towel or blanket art! Do get down to breakfast early for the best selection of food. They do cook fresh eggs or omelettes on demand and we never left hungry! Should you want to enjoy the rooftop shade, the bartender will happily bring your Mojito or a Cuba Libre or whatever you prefer upstairs to the rooftop garden. If you have a special romantic occasion or not, reserve the rooftop turret house for that unforgettable unique dinner experience. This is a quiet hotel for the most part. Should you crave Cuban music, simply step out the door, turn right to the Plaza Vieja and within two blocks you will be inundated with a myriad of musical sounds. Stroll around until you find what appeals to your ears most of all! And when you?ve had enough you can retreat to the tranquility of the Hotel Raquel. For Westerners don?t forget to bring your own facecloths. Many hotels and casas particulars do not seem to have mattress covers. If you are uncomfortable with this then a way around that is to bring along one of the sheet bags used inside sleeping bags.

We like small hotels, not the big machines with hundreds of rooms. Hotel Raquel is exactly what we are looking for: just a few rooms, great location with walking distance to everything, spacious rooms and good breakfast. The terrace on the rooftop was just outside our room - perfect! Good service and nice people at the front desk. Even if the shower did not always had hot water and not all the bulbs in the lamps did work, we found the hotel very charming. We are in Havana, remember? The building itself is a good reason for staying here, and there are a lot of great restaurants just around the corner. You may find cheaper hotels in Havana, but you get what you pay for. Go for it!

A very pleasant hotel in the centre of the Historic Centre. We stayed here for six nights - the first night in a windowless room with broken shower and no safe. We were moved the next day to a much nicer room with french windows and a small balcony. Breakfast is adequate - no stars. Excellent base for exploring.

“Architectural gem in great location ”
We had an unplanned one night stay here as a result of our original hotel being overbooked. Building certainly has wow factor! Rooms were nice and the shower best we came across in all of Cuba. Breakfast was buffet style and although we prefer table service, we enjoyed the offering. Location is fantastic near all the main squares of Havana Vieja, Capitalio and museum of revolution. One downside was that our room had no window. Maybe something to request if you book this hotel for a longer stay.

      “Beautiful hotel, some issues ”
It is a gorgeous building, with high ceilings, beautiful architectural touches, lovely furniture and art (art and room names have a Jewish theme). The rooftop area is great for catching some sun, enjoying views, nighttime cocktails, etc. The staff were friendly and accommodating. And the location is great for seeing Habana Vieja. Everything is easily walkable, and pedicabs are also an option (real cabs are more of a challenge). The immediate streets are full of pot holes and laundry hanging from windows, but give you some sense of local life. More great buildings, squares and restaurants are just a few blocks away. The restaurant is sketchy. Based on our experience, I would avoid dinner there (which is why the dining room was always empty at night). Breakfast was mixed; I missed strong coffee and more variety of fruits and vegetables (common problems in Havana). We had to move from our first room due to a strong moldy smell. The replacement room next door was fine. We did have minor problems with a running toilet and burned out light bulb, which were not fixed 3 days after being reported. Oh well, minor inconveniences compared to the beauty and location.

My husband, adult daughter and I spent 3 nights in Hotel Raquel. The staff were utterly charming and gave good information on where to go for a meal outwith the hotel when exploring the old town. The rooftop garden was a haven in the heat and the mojitos were exceptional. Although it was extremely hot an interior room was a welcome. Havana is a shock to the senses especially if you live in the countryside. I would recommend this hotel as a respite from the long trip from UK via France. It has an airy art-deco feel and was very clean.

      “A warm spirited & beautiful hotel. ”
This hotel has a very special charm and appeal and that's just the staff! The architecture, interiors, floors and decor add the extra dynamic. I stayed for 2 weeks and it became my home. I got to know most of the staff personally and they treat me with the utmost respect. I was in room 302, a very large junior suite on the top floor looking onto the delightful roof terrace and stained glass ceiling. The views were magnificent even though roadworks were going on locally, most of which were completed by the time i left. I was able to view 3 other rooms which also had good interiors, a couple had petite balconies. The room was kept clean, some days more attention was paid to it than others. Breakfast was always a real surprise. Non conventional, but i loved the fruit juices, fruit platters and fresh coffee very much. They even allowed me to cook my eggs my way a couple of times. On my birthday 21 sept, the hotel staff kindly presented me with a modest bouquet of perfumed roses. I met the hotel manager on a few occasions, she was charming, personable and had a nice rapport with her team. Warm and friendly bar staff. Hanoi, Wilbert & Chucho always making me laugh and continuously striving to make the BEST mojhitos in town...and they do! The receptionists do their job very efficiently and never without a smile. The bellhops/concierge always ready to help. Helen the waitress became my spiritual guide. She is worth her weight and knowledge in gold. The surrounding area is excellent. Close to the more sophisticated part of old Havana. Piazzas and plazas about a two minute walk. Great coffee bars, restaurants and independent small galleries to stumble upon. Obispo, the main busy street only 5 minutes walk. Taxi and bike taxis everywhere and very affordable. I really liked and enjoyed the Raquel and pleased i chose it as my base for touring Havana and a few nearby beaches/places. My only complaint would be that the roof terrace could use some reclining or collapsable sun loungers, so for those planning on sunbathing on the terrace, at least you can lay completely flat . The current sun loungers have a fixed shape. However, the swing seats are great! I would definitely use it again and recommend it. I miss my Raquel Amigos already.

“Beautiful colonial hotel in the heart of Havana Vieja ”
I stayed in this hotel as part of a 10 day trip around Cuba to celebrate my 30th and was not disappointed. It's location is superb for exploring Havana Vieja and is only seconds away from the beautiful Plaza Vieja. The service was excellent, smiling and helpful reception and door staff and the building itself is magnificent. Huge columns greet you as you walk up the marble stairs, look up at the orange and yellow stained glass ceiling before climbing into the polished cage lift. We asked to stay on the top (3rd) floor which was an excellent choice. It was quiet despite being next to the lift, we had two large windows overlooking the walkway, and easy access to the beautiful roof terrace with views over Plaza Vieja its a wonderful location to sit and have an evening drink. Little tip though, the mojitos here aren't the best in Havana maybe stick to beers or Cuba Libre's. The room was huge - practically a suite - a tad on the dark side even with windows but that was fine. It was clean, tidy, plenty of storage space. We did have separate beds - perhaps only compliant. All in all we loved our four night stay here!

“Very central hotel in old Havana ”
We stayed two nights in this hotel which is a sight in itself. The inside is amazing with marble, statues and pillars. We arrived in the morning but had to wait until 4 pm to get our room, which is the advertised check-in time. We got a room without window. It seems like they put people in these rooms and those who complains get a room with a window. We didn't shift as the room without window is very quiet and the other isn't. Air conditioning worked perfectly. No internet available. They recommend the business centre at Hotel Saratoga which has fast connections for 4 CUC (4$) for 15 min or 6 CUC for 30 min. Saratoga also has wifi. The taxi to the hotel stopped two blocks from the hotel as they can't drive further. Don't have too much luggage. Breakfast buffet is included but was a bit different with many cakes that didn´t look too inviting lying there in the sun, although on ice. They had toast, small pancakes, sausages, minihamburgers and a lot more. Otherwise the hotel is situated perfectly and the reception speak english.

“Wonderful step back in time ”
After having read some bad reviews I was worried about my choice. But the reality had proved to be the opposite. If you are in search of the true feeling of old time luxury, this is a place to be. Absolutely beautiful outside and inside, high ceilings, very tasteful renovation with old touches, like antique elevator, ceramic tile flooring, mosaics everywhere, etc. Good helpful staff, good breakfast, and it was incredible that after the breakfast they did the survey, I pointed out that they needed to bring true Havana fresh bread instead of unedible international version for toasts, and to my surprise, the very next day they indeed delivered the local bread! Bathrooms are in good shape. We did have large room with two balconies overlooking Amargura street. It really made us feel like we were right in the middle of Havana life! Romantic terrace on the roof is a perfect place to hang out. The view from the terrace is not as great as from Ambos Mundos, but the last one recently had been renovated and it lost all the old charm, becoming like any other terrace in the world, while Raquel terrace is something special. Do not miss Cheese and wine cafe exactly opposite the entrance to this hotel, good local and Spanish cheeses, wine from Chile and Spain.

Wow! what a sight for sore eyes after a long plane ride. The entrance is stunning and a top tourist attraction for people wandering in just to see the stainglass ceiling. Our room didn't have a window but it was fine it meant it was quiet and it was spacious and clean and very comfortable. There are no cars in the surrounding streets so I guess that balcony rooms are also quiet. The town shuts down by 11pm so not a lot of street noise anyway. Lots of space to sit and read - the rooftop terrace was perfect in the afternoons to read and enjoy the breeze. Perfectly situated - Calle Obisipo Mercaderes and Plaza Vieja are a stones throw away. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. People were friendly and polite it was a great start to our trip. Thoroughly recommend it.

The architecture. The roof terrace. The location. The curved room (honestly) The mojitos. All wonderful. We had rooms 102 and 103 which connect and both balconies. We are a family of 4. Ask for 103 or 203 as think they will be the best rooms. They have a (admittedly quite small) double bed. Very clean indeed. Felt we had arrived in Cuba. Road resurfacing by hotel now completed. Breakfast sadly not great- though did make a reasonable fresh omelette. We were back for one night at the end of our 2 week road trip and we were welcomed back and given "our" rooms.

We were in a room on the 2nd floor with a balcony. No double beds, but this seems the norm for Cuba. The room was cleaned spotlessly every day. Yes the sheets and towels are old BUT they were always clean. as others have said the breakfast is quirky, but always something different on offer and more than adequate. The omelettes are delicious and plenty of fresh fruit, meat and cheeses. The staff ere very polite, more than helpful. The roof top terrace is stunning. A fabulous stay. The Raquel Hotel, near to Plaza Vieja (Old Square) and Saint Francis of Assisi Square, in the Cuban capital, has a seductive and harmonious Art Noveau architectural style. The building is 20 kilometers away from José Martí International Airport. In addition to its terrace-lookout, the hotel has art galleries and well-decorated and tranquil places for leisure. According to experts, its Biblical name and some of its areas - the Lejaim Lobby-Bar, Jardín de Edén Restaurant and Bezalel Boutique - are an allegoric evocation of Hebrew culture in Cuba.
