      Varadero Airport

Juan Gualberto Gomez Airport was built in 1989 and inaugurated by Fidel Castro,[3] thus replacing the old Varadero airport located in Santa Marta, currently known as Kawama Airport. The airport was named after a journalist, fighter for the Cuban Independence and black rights activist in Cuba Juan Gualberto Gómez (1854–1933). The terminal building has shops for tourists (including rum, cigars, T-shirts, books, carvings, pharmaceuticals), a large departures lounge cafeterias and a VIP lounge. A VIP card is available by paying $30/person to the local tour company representative. This allows the departing passenger to bypass the queues for check-in, have an agent take your departure tax to the correct official for you, and bypass any lines for passport control. The passenger is then taken to the VIP lounge which provides free food and drink (including alcoholic beverages).[4] The ground handling equipment is imported mainly from North America. There are four jet bridges, but air stairs are used for the remaining aircraft parking spaces on the apron by the terminal. Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport (IATA: VRA, ICAO: MUVR), formerly known as Varadero Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto de Varadero), is an international airport serving Varadero, Cuba and the province of Matanzas. The airport is located closer to the city of Matanzas than to Varadero. The closest airport to Varadero is Kawama Airport. In 2009, the airport handled 1.28 million passengers,[2] making it the second busiest airport in Cuba after José Martí International Airport in Havana.

        Poor Poor

“Strictly okay - willnot be returning again ”
My family and I visited the beautiful city of Varadero Cuba last week (still have my tan :). Let me state for the record that i will visit Varadero again but not stay at Hotel Club Puntarena. We booked at the Playa Caleta but were relocated to Puntarena as Caleta was undergoing renovations. i blame redtag.ca for this as we were advised teh Caleta had been going through renovations for a couple of mopnths now so we should never have been allowed to book it at all to begin with. False advertising. The hotel was built in the 1920s so it has some dated features. The rooms, although adequate were TINY and the door to the balcony required Herculean effort to operate. we did see the occasional roach but i came prepared with bug spray since we were in a tropical country and it was summer. The elevators did operate for the most part (there were three in total of which one conked off almost daily). The safes in both my parent's room and my sister's were broken so we had to get a handyman in to fix it. there was no hot water for showers but that was fixed too by day Two. My parents ended up changing rooms as there were roaches in the washroom (disgusting!!) The pool wasn't very clean - it was beautiful with underwater lights and an amazing architectural feature of keeping the water just at the rim without letting it overflow but it wasn't cleaned everyday - also, this being an old hotel, there was no swim-up bar. its what i like but i wasn't too displeased with the rooms and the pool. The buffet and the Ala Carte restaurant(s) are the worst features of this hotel. I've been to many resorts in Cuba and while the food is bland more often than not, there is always a large spread and you can always find something to suit your taste buds. The buffet was TINY. I mean like 5 dishes in total. Maybe three fruits and one hot station. It was pretty sad. and they ran out of food really fast - the hotel was empty when we checked in and the buffet opened for dinner at 6:30 pm. by 7 pm, they were out of fish!! i was shocked. Everything looked and smelled stale and for teh 7 days I was there, they pretty much had the same dishes everyday so i suspect they were recycling leftovers. The place was SWARMING with flies. Pretty unhygienic and we usually went off the resort to eat lunch. Dinner was no better - The Ala Carte restaurant was always out of fish and chicken and we don't eat beef or pork so we had no choice but to pack up and go off the resort to eat dinner too. we had reservations for all three restaurants but only one was ever open and they forced patrons to eat whatever was served that day (Italian, Romantico or Asian). Their desserts were plenty but covered in flies so you were really chancing stomach bugs if you ventured to try their stuff. i'm gutsy so i would hit the breakfast buffet as it opened in the hopes of getting some biscuits which were very good. But i would always take it to go coz the buffet eating area would frighten off the most gutsy of food connoisseurs :-) The beach was beautiful and Varadero is a beautiful city. Downtown Varadero reminds me of Goa and is very touristy and quaint. i would definitely return to the city, not this hotel. The staff are fairly good here so the owners should consider getting with the times and tear this relic down and rebuild. There were lots of Cuban 'chicas' around for hire - not the best environment for parents with children. just saying. i know Cuba is famous for cheap labour =) but its usually more subtle than that. Also, there were lots of locals at the hotel - this resort doesn't issue wristbands so it was a little scary security-wise but we were assured the security was tight. Bottom line, i saw a lot of things i didn't particularly want to see while on vacation so i will not be recommending or returning.

        “Good value for money”
The hotel was one of the cheaper options when I was researching where to book in Varadero. With that in mind, I was very satisfied with the hotel. The pools are great, the direct beach access makes for great swimming and the espresso is good. I had a beach view room on the 6th floor which made for a great balcony experience. Cocktails are by default mixed with cheaper spirits (i.e. no Havanna Club rum). The wifi didn't work when I was there, which was a bummer. It also didn't sound as if it would work again soon. The buffet food was OK, there was usually at least one really good dish. The a la carte restaurants (where, annoyingly, you have to book in advance) serve surprisingly good food in a nice atmosphere.

        “Good for the price ”
Stayed at Puntarena twice and have no complaints. Don't expect 5 star treatment or a 5 star resort but you do get a bit more than what you pay for. If you're a seasoned traveller you'll know what to stay away from and what to enjoy. The food is on par with most 3 star resorts however, the menu is not that diverse. Both restaurants claim you need a reservation, which is partially true but, this would be based on how full the hotel is. During my last trip in 2012, there was only one 24h snack bar and that too was based on how full the hotel was. The food available at the snack bar was limited to sandwiches and hamburgers, but did the trick. The hotel offers lots of entertainment and activities throughout the day and night, which are great for all ages, most of the time. The bars in the hotel are usually full, but a nice tip early on in your trip will keep your glass full for the week! Also, if you throw a few pesos to the garden / maintenance staff, they'll bring you a fresh coconut and sugarcane stock daily. If you're into travelling around, there is a motorcycle / scooter rental down the road and booking excursions is quite simple. Group trips to Havana are nice but find a good taxi driver and you'll get to see much more than just local tourist attractions. Being from the city, any chance to go into an ocean is much more fun than saturating in a pool but, if you're into the social aspect, the pools are pretty busy during the peak hours. That being said, the beach is always clean but on days when the tide is high and the water is rough, it breaks into the water. Rooms are what you'd expect from a 3 star hotel and a few treats left behind for the housekeeping staff will go a long way. If you're going to leave treats, dollar-store candies and novelties are good but name brand products like cosmetics, medicine, clothing etc., really bring a smile to the staff. Staff are friendly and willing to help out but like anything, people are nice to those who are nice to them. Many staff will be open to inviting you to their home for dinner for a small fee. If you're open to this, it's not usually more than 20 pesos and a cab ride into a nearby town such as Cardenas. The food is usually lobster, rice, salad, chicken and maybe beef. Great experience on what local life is like, for those interested. Overall, I enjoyed both stays at this resort and would definitely be open to visiting again. FYI (the 'When did you travel' option did not cover the dates I previously visited)

I am a regular to the hotel and i would not go anywhere else because of my Cuban Family I will give you new visitors my honest opinion ROOMS if you want a beautiful room pay the extra and get ocean view renovated room HOWEVER if it rains allot the ceiling in the bathroom will leak. Just call and be polite and they will take care of it. The canal rooms are nice too but the smell can get to you if you are not use to it. It is the oil refinery. The patio doors may be hard to open, you have to play with them a bit and than they will open easily. Hot water every day no problems there . No cockroaches as others have stated. they are moths!!!!!!! i have stayed on almost everyfloor there so look closer they may look like roaches but they are NOT FOOD excellent pork, chicken & beef! Go early to get the fresh and hot. Stay away from the a la carte in my opinion. VIsit off site to Al Capones for an excellent lobster, shrimp surf n turf just down the road for 25 pesos you won't regret it. I never have been sick from their food or water! STAFF could not ask for any better on the strip in my opinion. Be polite and treat them with respect and you will get the same in return and more!!!! From front desk, bartender etc NIGHTLY SHOWS excellent work put into these shows and it shows. Go each night at 930 to the pool deck Compliment them on the show they love to hear your feed back!!!! Over all the hotel is def a 3 star due to the age and condition, but still beautiful. The staff and service is a 5 plus star. You are in Cuba, relax relax relax and have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We satyed here on our 42-day tour of Cuba. We stayed at various places, from cheap casas to expensive five-star hotels. Why? We wanted to experience it all. Our experience with this hotel? We loved it. Maybe even more than some top-notch hotels. Why? Extremely kind and helpful staff (e.g. we were given a room with an ocean view for free), excellent food and beach, .... but yes, the staff ther was one of the kindest (besides Cayo Largo) in the whole Cuba. We wanted to come back, before our flight back home, but the hotel was full. We wanted to say hello to all the people who made our stay unforgettable (the receptionists, waiters) as they are simply one of the nicest people we've met in Cuba. Thank you for everything. If we ever come back to Cuba, we'll come around :-)

        Wonderful Vacation!
Please don't be put off by the first few sentences, read the whole review. We visited in June 2011. A long flight but worth it. We arrived at night so didn't see the hotel until the next morning. Our room on the 7th floor overlooked the beach and what a view, just what you expect from the Caribean. the room was clean but like the rest of the hotel showing its age. the first couple of days were surreal, We decided the plane hadn't made it and this was our penance, isolated in limbo in Hotel Paradiso. Not many luxuries to speak of. Plastic glasses, not many people and deserted beaches, not much Entertainment and the food was mediocre. It was about the 4th day before someone told us about the Beach bar and restaurant, we'd been living on cheese toasties up till then!!! But then we got into the swing of things, The Staff are so friendly, helpful and grateful, they can't do enough for you. They all give 100% to entertain you with very little resources at their disposal their efforts are exceptional. We watched the new arrivals as they slowly adjusted to the surroundings the same way we had, and by the second week the hotel was packed. But you could always get a sun lounger by the pool. Still a shortage of glasses but once you make friends with the staff you tend to find you get a glass everytime instead of plastic. The faulty lifts, lack of ping pong balls the strange Ala Carte restaurant and the 70's style decor all add to the infectious charm of the place. If you want 5* luxury go elsewhere, but if like us you want to meet the real Cubans and see the real Cuba you can't beat this place. They have very little in the way of material things but everywhere we went they were all very happy laid back and enjoying themselves. When we did eat out we could not believe the value for money, sometimes we left more tip than the cost of the meal. A beautiful place with beautiful people a fantastic place to go. Soak in the culture or just sunbath on the white sand, go on as many excursions as you can, and definately go to Havana and Club Tropicana. This has to be one of our favourite holidays. We didn't want to leave.

        The Best Time Ever!!
Gran Caribe Club Puntarena was the best time ever. I went with just me and my mom for one week in the month of April 2011. It had been our second time going to Puntarena and it was....THE BOMB!We made amazing friends with the staff and the food was not that bad. I mean your in Cuba your not gonna have the best food, but ur not gonna have the same food as you have in Canada. There was a point that when you just came from the pool and you're dying to go upstairs and change, the elavators may not work sometimes, which didn't matter to us beause you're in the carrabean and obviously somethings gonna go wrong...Over all it was the best bonding time with my mom and trust me....(this is coming from an 11 yr old who is home alone:)!! )

        Wonderful Vacation!
We were at the Puntarena in March 2008, we had a great time!! My only real complaint was that there was only 1 elevator working, but the wait was never that long and you are in Cuba it's nice out, so walking up the stairs was not that bad, they are located outside the building. But otherwise the staff was friendly, drinks were good, beach is nice, pool was nice, food was ok..not great but there was always something to eat! The hotel is the first hotel so if you go on a bus tour you are either first or last to be picked up or dropped off. Overall it was a great and affordable vacation!!
