Emanating a sober elegance, this is by far the hotel facility that best represents traditional Varadero. Gardens, sturdy, light-colored walls and red-tiled roofs, stand out in front of a backdrop formed by a sea of startlingly blue nuances- and by green oasis-like vegetation. This hotel is located right where the beach begins. Situated barely 2 hours drive from Havana and 25 minutes from the “Juan Gualberto Gómez”, International Airport, Varadero ranks among the world’s finest beaches. From most of the Oasis Hotel rooms the visitor gazes out over the beach, providing the facility with a tropical ambiance of joy, mingling the fresh smell of the sea with the radiant sunshine. 147 air-conditioned rooms with private bath and satellite TV. Emanating a sober elegance, this is by far the hotel facility that best represents traditional Varadero. Gardens, well-built light-colored walls and red-tiled roofs, stand out in front of a backdrop formed by a sea of startlingly blue nuances -and by green oasis- like vegetation. The hotel is located right where the beach begins. Situated barely at a 2-hour drive from Havana and 25 minutes from the "Juan Gualberto Gómez" International Airport, Varadero ranks among the world's finest beaches. “Cockroach Room ”
When your vacation experience starts by opening the door on the wardrobe, to find a partial eaten bowl of food molding with bugs on it, you know the adventure has begun. The hotel staff couldn't contain their surprise when I finally got one of them to come to the room and remove it. The cockroach scurrying in the bathroom just added to the experience. Thank goodness we brought RAID as we wasted no time in spraying down the entire room and bathroom. This was a double bonus because the smell of RAID was like room freshener to mask the mold smell. We arrived at 5:00 and could not get a drink at the open bar as they were out of alcohol...at an All Inclusive (REALLY!!!!!). The all inclusive is not so inclusive here. Our traveling companion had it a little worse as he did not have a toilet seat in his room...we have since found out that this is not necessarily new for many resorts nor the airport. Thank goodness we brought items from home to tip our housekeeper as we had toilet paper. There were some rooms that never got toilet paper the entire week, thankfully they brought their own or we gave them some of ours. The food was lacklustre until the night of Feb 14 when the kitchen pumped out an amazing feast. I am not sure that is accurate but after a week where the best meal of the day was breakfast with the omelet guy, it looked amazing., There were beautiful displays and it was the only meal where they had not run out of plates, cups, or cutlery as was the case in the entire week. People we met, like Cathy M made the vacation fun. The resort really had nothing to do with the positive of our experience. We had several negative experiences in our interactions with the group of Russian tourists in the resort. The young men were rude, disrespectful of other guests and the staff. They did not tip and treated everyone with disdain. The hotel staff couldn't do anything about it until one of that group did something that caused the police to be called. After that the Russians settled a bit. Again...examples of a resort that did not make a traveller feel confident or welcome. The beach was great for snorkelling but had a lot of garbage on it. Again, a mix of ignorant tourists and the hotel not having staff go out and clean the beach. Ariel, the coconut hut guy, tried to keep the beach chair area clean. He seemed to be the only one working at the beach. The guys at the bar seemed to be more concerned about their personal conversations than providing service to the people. It was ironic that during the day there were typically two men working the beach bar, which barely poured 100 drinks for the day, and they had 1 woman at the pool bar and adjoining coffee bar, running like crazy pouring or making 100 drinks an hour. It was glaringly apparent that the majority of male staff had no concept of customer service. We were fortunate that we did have hot water. Over half the people we talked to did not for a portion or their entire stay. This is not the place you want to be your first experience in Cuba. If you paid less than $700 to go from Canada then it was okay. If you paid more...then you got shafted. It was my first time but I am a camper so I adapted. This is not a place for the feint of heart. I am amazed that Sunwing offers it but then again, if you want that much adventure in your vacation bring OFF, RAID, toilet paper, and if possible a toilet seat. Tipping the staff with cash may be helpful but their stores don't have items to buy so bring toothpaste, deodorant, makeup, nail polish, hair gel, pens, pencils, ball gloves from Value Village, baseballs, feminine hygiene products, and the like. They are appreciative and can use it to barter on the black market, that DOESN'T EXIST.
