      Varadero Airport

Juan Gualberto Gomez Airport was built in 1989 and inaugurated by Fidel Castro,[3] thus replacing the old Varadero airport located in Santa Marta, currently known as Kawama Airport. The airport was named after a journalist, fighter for the Cuban Independence and black rights activist in Cuba Juan Gualberto Gómez (1854–1933). The terminal building has shops for tourists (including rum, cigars, T-shirts, books, carvings, pharmaceuticals), a large departures lounge cafeterias and a VIP lounge. A VIP card is available by paying $30/person to the local tour company representative. This allows the departing passenger to bypass the queues for check-in, have an agent take your departure tax to the correct official for you, and bypass any lines for passport control. The passenger is then taken to the VIP lounge which provides free food and drink (including alcoholic beverages).[4] The ground handling equipment is imported mainly from North America. There are four jet bridges, but air stairs are used for the remaining aircraft parking spaces on the apron by the terminal. Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport (IATA: VRA, ICAO: MUVR), formerly known as Varadero Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto de Varadero), is an international airport serving Varadero, Cuba and the province of Matanzas. The airport is located closer to the city of Matanzas than to Varadero. The closest airport to Varadero is Kawama Airport. In 2009, the airport handled 1.28 million passengers,[2] making it the second busiest airport in Cuba after José Martí International Airport in Havana.

        “Awful hotel”
This hotel is awful wanted to cry after walking round. Resembled Butlins in the 1960s. The building were either closed or crumbling. The buffet was poor and designed to please the Russians who are the majority holiday makers. The tables were plastic with paper table clothes. Feral cats were everywhere including the outdoor dining areas. We insisted on a move after a day and we were closely followed by the only other 2 English couples in the hotel

Unfortunately, this resort promises a number of services and/or activities, which it may not or simply does not provide. The rooms & eating areas are also not the cleanest. If you just want to lie in the sun and are expecting little in terms of service, food and activities, you may like this place. However, I am sure there are many other resorts with comparable prices offering much more.

“Poorly maintained hotel without appearance. ”
Although the staff was, very welcoming, friendly and helpful, we will never go back to this hotel. The hotel has many flaws by poor maintenance. The facilities are limited and the quality of the food was not great. We do not need luxury, then we had taken a 5 star hotel, but even a simple hotel must be in order.

        “NEVER AGAIN! ”
To start things off. I have stayed at Hotel Aguas Azules twice in the past and been to varadero 9 times. so i know EXACTLY what to expect from a 2 star to a 5 star. Most recent trip there ( May 2014) i was absolutely disgusted! from the moment me and my gf checked in. we arrived late at night and it was down season so i knew there was not going to be alot of people. I asked the woman at the front desk how many people at the resort and there were only 90 people saying that. i purchased the bungalow, an extra 75 dollars a person for our stay here. as she checked us in she gave us a room in the hotel i said no no, i purchased the bungalow . she began to TELL me i was wrong and i would not be getting it and would be staying in the hotel and i would have to come back in the morning to talk to the manager. I am not one to be walked all over so i put my foot down and said i will not leave untill i get the bungalow that i paid for. after 45 min in the lobby, it is now 130 am . and still no room. it blows my mind that 90 people on the entire resort and they cant sort out one bungalow for a RETURNING couple. ALL the pools were closed. not even one of them was functional. There was 3 inches of algae around the only pool that had water in it ....not safe at all for swimmers. there was no entertainment at night time (probably because out of season i get it) the staff at the lobby bar were really nice that was about it. We spoke to our Representative along with another couple that came in on the same bus as us. Told him how we felt about the hotel and instantly he jumped up and said i will transfer you to the sister hotel of aguas azules (Brisas Del Caribe) all four of us were shocked and relived that we would not have to spend a week there. i cannot remember his name exactly but i want to say it was david he works for sunwing at aguas azules he did a wonderful job and he is the only good thing i have to say about this hotel. our room key did not work ,our a/c did not work ,our safe did not work, in fact it was ripped apart with the wires hanging out the top of the safe. the sliding balcony doors did not lock and only slid half way open. the room smelt of mold and there were literally 100s of ants everywhere even in the bed. please do not waste your time looking here or money here it is not a good resort . i hope this helped shed a little light on what you are looking for :) thanks and happy travels :)

        “Horrific conditions! ”
We booked this hotel and had faith that it would be ok having read prior reviews and being that it is a Sunwing "Smile" hotel. Arrived at the hotel at 10pm - upon check-in we were asked by the receptionist if we would like to pay 160 Pesos extra for a "better" room than the one we were booked into...we declined, having paid for a package vacation and expecting decent conditions! The receptionist gave us room "key cards" that she retrieved from her personal purse and formatted - very shady. Our keys were given to us wrapped in a piece of paper with the room number scratched on it (3612). We then headed to our room! As we exited the elevator on the 3rd floor there was no lighting in the corridor only a single swinging light bulb from the ceiling at the end of the hall! I will let the photographs that we took in the room and the hallways tell the rest of the story...it was a horrific experience! Bed bugs/mold in the bathroom/no flushing toilets/brown water from the faucet and no A/C. The floor in the room was so dirty that it looked like it had never been washed or someone had put their mop in a bucket of mud and swished it around the floor! The TV remote was held together with dirty Band-aids and the TV was stained with a white "sticky" substance!! The grounds were not landscaped or cared for and the pool was drained with green algie growing in it! Abandoned skids and industrial machinery were littered everywhere and the "stage" area was over grown with weeds. The following morning we went for breakfast and the restaurant had no A/C, the buffet was not refrigerated. The food was grey in colour and looked old! We complained to the Hotel management whom showed us two more rooms; The Honeymoon suite and an "exclusive" 5 star bungalow - both were just as bad. We met with our Sun-Wing Rep, Alexandre, whom was wonderful and very understanding, within two hours we were relocated to the Brisas El Caribe...which was a definite Cuban 4 Star. The pictures that are attached show the conditions and were taken at this Hotel on May 24th/25th of this year (2014). I would not recommend this hotel and the conditions.

“Leaves something to be desired ”
First off lets say not all was bad and i will tell the goos with the bad. In a word "NASTY". My room was filthy dirty, My rom had a loarge amount of bugs and the furniture and drapes were all satined. The view from my window was a pile of garbage. The room as a whole was in need of severe upgrading. I asked for a new room and they were not interested in trying to find one. After the first day i refused to eat at the resort. I found bugs squished to the plates at the buffet along with bugs crawling on the food. On the upside the pool area and beach were beautifull. The ressort constantly had games and activities around the pool for everybody to participate in. In a nut shell Cuba is amazing but stay away from Club Amigo Aguas Azules!!!

Buffet pour, dirty plates, sweet disgusting wine, no air-con, staff try to avoid you, grill guy leave. All the food that they not serve it extra income when sealing in black-market. No management. No lime for cocktails, queue for coffee, and everything. Rooms No water pressure, not enough towels, no phone, no remote for tv. Noisy rooms near lobby.

        “AVOID ”
OK... this is hard for me since it is never happen befor that I had to write a bad review but trust me, this is no exageration. I am not a difficult person, I get the fact that we are not in our country, I have choose a 3 star and I was on a very low expectation mode...but I never tought it would be that bad. Lets start with the good things: The site is beautiful with a luxourious vegetation. Animation team is present, they have a lot of fun and they make us smile. The coffee is amazing Pina Colada excellent Now here is the real stuff... THE ROOM: The room is clean but no hot water at all. Well, I am lying... I had hot water one time in the week. Shower with no pressure no bath plug. THE HOTEL: Huge site, so if you forgot something in your room in the hotel section, and you are at the beach or the noisy pool, you have to gather all your courage to go get it. A La CARTE: Only 2 a la carte was open. The cuban restaurant wich was probably the buffet of the bungalow section before, don't worth it at all. They should reopen a buffet there to offer more variety of food. It's big and they use only half of the room so it feels weird and empty. We didn't even finish our plate, food was flavourless and we went to the buffet after to get ham and bread for a sandwich. The Seafood restaurant was a little better. But if you want to have lobster, you have to pay for it. THE BUFFET: In my different trip to Cuba, I have been able to find something to eat but not this time...Dirty dishes, no glass availbale, no cuttelery, long wait to get food from the grill...flavourless food, even pasta was horrible, the sauce was liquid. I had a beef stew once that was good..otherwise I have been eating ham and cheeze sandwich morning, lunch and dinner and when I was lucky, I could put butter in it. I have never spend that much money eating outside of the complex than this time. Even the waiter are not helpful. We have to find a place on dirty tables and run after them to get cuttelery and glasses. The icecream was very good. I loosed weight there. With that said, the final decision is yours but I have talked with people who went there several time and they say, from time to time, it is getting worst. Even with a very low budget, I will never go back there.

        “Could Use Some Reno's ”
I'm not even going to say that it was "good for Cuba" standards. The hotel itself was a dump. The food was awful - I stuck to pineapple and eggs my entire trip. Their "steamed veggies" was cabbage. Mind you, this was in Feb 2010 so things MAY have gotten better. The party life was amazing though! So, if you're like me looking for a killer party during Spring Break, head there. Cheap price, great beach & booze flows like water. We did get a good night's rest throughout the trip and it wasn't very noisy in our block. Pizza Nova in the mall down the road was our saviour. Bring ketchup and snacks for your room.

        “Disapointed and Mislead.... ”
Before I critique, I will confirm from other reviews that the staff here really do a great job, they work hard and accommodate as best as they can considering what they have to work with. Everyone was polite, friendly, no pressure to tip or buy stuff and it feels genuine. I felt like they truly appreciated every comment, tip, small gift and smile we gave and left. My boys were treated like royalty. Philip, Ronaldo, Jesus, Miranda, Rocky and Osmin (just to name a few) thank you so much for making me and my 2 boys feel welcome. Now the review (To clarify this is also not my first time in Cuba and 100% understood what it "should have been like): I booked a bungalow for a one week stay April 13 2014. I was travelling with 9 other people and they all booked bungalows as well. I would recommend this bungalow (#A-2106) to anyone. Very Clean, top floor, closest to breakfast bar (be there around 9am for a fairly decent omelette) and closest bungalow to the entrance to beach. Spacious room, good size closet and dresser to store clothes, my safe worked, TV had clear image (channel 19 for kids), had an extra cot and fridge was cold. I had two thermostats for the AC unit (one for bedroom and one for living room) and I never had an issue controlling how cold or warm I wanted it. Side notes, I had issue trying to use my travel power converter in all of the plug ins except the white one beside the sink / there is only one garbage can and its super small / the "bar fridge" is empty. Do not expect there to be ANYTHING in it unless you do it yourself and that costs $$ / I had to constantly reach into the toilet tank to reconnect the ball and chain (which had been made out of rubber band+dental floss+paperclip) / the shower was tepid at best and cold as heck at worst, it also made a mess of water on the floor unless you sat down. This was the "good bungalow". It was exactly what I expected for Cuba and I was extremely happy with it, as well the cleaning lady did a wicked job keeping it sand free, clean and fresh smelling. My friends did not have such good luck. They experienced broke fridge, safes that didn't work, sketchy AC (one just blew warm air regardless of setting) lack of light-bulbs, NO hot/warm water at all in one. One family had a hide-away bed in the couch, that was supposed to be where their two children would sleep. The mechanism of it was trashed and bent, and we could not get it open. This inconvenienced sleeping arrangements as we Repeated attempts (over 2 days) to ask for a replacement or maintenance to come assist resulted in nothing . My friends and I finally flipped it upside down on day 3 (think drunk, 200 pound couch, in flip flops, sunburned and its 33 C outside and you can imagine the colorful words we were tossing about) and literally kicked the crap out of it and popped it open. It wouldn't however now close so they lost a good portion of room space for the rest of their trip. The ground floor bungalows have cockroaches, ants, lizards (some worse than others) and one guest I spoke with had a ground floor balcony door that DID NOT lock. Its weird, you need a key card to enter the room but a thief could just come in off the beach and walk right in. As well it seemed everyone else was having issues with the electrical, resulting in my room becoming the charging station for all of our camera's/electronics. The food at the buffet was very below average. Same food everyday. There was no care or effort in presentation, quality or selection. In one week I saw only 1 banana available and it had been stepped on. The fish dish one night was so dried out, hard and salty, even the locals that were staying with the hotel wouldn't touch it. For that matter, as a joke, we threw a piece outside beside the buffet at "Cat City" and they wouldn't eat it. It was THAT bad. The fruit selection was horrible (not good when you have kids that need something familiar to eat). Lunch was always the same, and leftover lunch became Suppers "surprise" dish. Recycled and squirted with mustard and (?) mayo. I did find a few dishes worth going back for seconds, but overall, I was very upset at how bad most of it was. (One lady in our group had lived in Cuba for a short time and was completely shocked at how bad the food was now). We ate at one a la carte and it was no different. In fact our "prepared" dishes just seemed to be plates someone ran up to the buffet to make for us. Beware the cats. Especially if you have children. We were warned our first day by staff that most have ticks or fleas, ear mites and various other medical condition (worms?). All it would take is one scratch and your trip is now a stay in the hospital fighting some fever and infection. AND TRUST me, some of the cats are not friendly. There are also so many tiny, super cute kittens that is hard to stop your children from wanting to pick them up. And these cats are everywhere. Do not leave your plate un-attended outside in the veranda. The hotel staff "tolerate" the cats but they do not want them there either. As for the fly's, that's just normal. You will find that at most, if not all, of the resort buffet's. Its Cuba....deal with it. The major complaint I had about our stay, was EVERYTHING seemed to be closed or locked or "out of something".. Upstairs at the pool, when your son needs to go pee, he has to walk back into the main complex beside the 24 hour bar and use that one. The bathrooms at the pool, 10 feet away, were locked the whole time. Nobody could tell us why. There is a sandwich bar beside this pool, and an exercise room. My buddy explored the fitness room, and at the time there was a local lady in there. It was 2pm, and as he left, she walked behind him and locked the door as soon as he was outside (???). As for the sandwich bar good luck on getting food, or for that matter someone there to staff it (we found Philip was there around 10-12midnight nightly and was always willing to whip up a quick grilled sandwich). You were not allowed in the pool after certain hours, the downstairs bar by the pool was advertised as having french fries for the kids, all day/everyday. We NEVER saw one. There is no swim up bar that we found in the whole resort. So bring a BIG travel cup or your walking a lot, as the cups they give are less than 250ml and the one and only reliable bar is inside the main lobby, second floor (open 24 hours, but no food). It also seemed like the kids club was closed at weird hours (we gave up guessing when it would be open that is....). The one small store that grossly overcharges for a can of beer closes at 9pm, so if you want any in your room, stock up first thing in the morning. This store has VERY limited snacks. Basically chips and cookies. There is a cigar/cigarette shop that is actually well priced and has a decent selection, it too closes at 9 and the coffee/espresso bar makes an excellent brew and is kept very clean and well staffed. There is also no bank at this resort, but the hotel front desk will exchange it for a fee. With fee and exchange rate you end up losing around $20 on $100 Canadian. The beach is superb. Wide open, soft sand, gorgeous blue clear water, its not deep at all, kids can wander freely 40 feet out and its only 2 feet deep. There is a small bar 200 ft from the ocean (again, bring BIG travel mugs, the sand gets very hot and it sucks to have to walk all that way for a very small drink). This bar also closes for the night and does not have food. There is free paddle boats and you can go sailing as well. Just ask. We all went to the nightly shows and really enjoyed them (nightly at 9pm). They put on a very good show and it has a small closet they converted into a "bar" so you can get a refreshment without leaving the show (again though, no snacks or food). The grounds of the hotel are well groomed and beautiful, as is the general architecture. This is a fairly large complex so to go to and fro takes a bit of walking, also at night the pathways are pitch black, so bring a few $3 dollar LED flashlights (Great gifts when you are leaving). To sum it up, we were all disappointed with what was "Lacking" when its advertised as an all inclusive. Being told you can't swim after 9pm (unless you go to the pitch black beach) or that there is nowhere to reliably get food once the buffet closes for yourself or children, that there was no bar fridge, no visible security or accountability for who belongs at your resort (we were not given bracelets, not one soul was wearing one..) We all agree never to go back to this place. There is too much selection in Cuba to think that this is normal and acceptable when it is clearly not. On the brightside, the rest of our trip went fantastic. Perfect weather and the food away from the hotel was delicious. If you do stay here ask Osmin at the front door if he named his baby Jostin : ) Also want to make a special thank you to the ever gracious Canadian Gary from out east and his lovely girlfriend! They saw I was solo with 2 small boys and on their last day they gave us a jar of peanut butter and jam. A small blessing in disguise ; )

“Not the same -- Beware ”
Ive stayed at this resort 4 times now, this year being the last. It seems in general the resort has gone down hill. My family of 9 booked a 2 week vacation not expecting the best, knowing it was Average. We noticed this year it was def below average, we are by no means picky people and don't expect the best in cuba HOWEVER, no toilet paper in public washrooms, no beer available at the pool bar, bugs in and round the bedrooms and buffets cold and old, whatever wasn't gone at lunch came back out for dinner. AND it was the same food for 14 days. Only 3 a la carte restaurants were open so we tried to eat there as much as possibly. The Italian was okay, Cuban and International sub par... The Staff are def awesome and they try there hardest with what they have.

“Great Trip but renovations and changes are needed ”
I arrived at Club Amigo Agua Azules around 11:00 pm Good Friday April 18, 2014 for a one week stay. I was the only one arriving so the check in process was pretty quick. However, when they brought me to my room it turned out it had not been cleaned so the lovely man brought me back down to the desk to have my room checked. The second room I had was 1618 on the second floor. Although it was clean, the room had a very disctinct musty smell and damp feeling, almost like I was in a basement. It did not suite well with my allergies. I should have asked to switch rooms. However I also very much enjoyed the fact that my room was soo close to the buffet. I could just get up in the morning and pretty much walk out of my room a few feet and there it was. This is my second stay at the hotel, I was there during March break 2012, and even though I know this time I was there during a slow part of the season, I really noticed a decline in the state of the hotel. In general the hotel was sort of damp musty, maybe it is the time of the year for cuba but it was not pleasant. The pool in the quiet are was open but very murky and the hot tub was down due to maintenance. They did have the bar/restaurant open on that side so you could grab snacks and drinks, which was nice because 2 years ago it was closed. The gym had a few new pieces of equipment, however they need some new pins as more than one person could not really use multiple pieces at once. Some of them are just completely broken down and should be fixed or removed. The food at the buffet was ok, not as good as 2 years ago, a lot of repeat and reused items. Don?t get me wrong a lot of it tasted great and you sure would not go hungry, but I missed the options of 2 years ago. Again this is the end of the year so that could also be the reason for this. I ate at the seafood restaurant one evening and it was absolutely delicious, I loved everything especially the seamans risotto. The burgers at the grill are amazing, they are my most favorite thing at this resort I must say. Also at the entertainment pool the chicken sandwhiches are sooo good. The bread is great as well! If you like to drink that is one thing Cuba is good at, I always had to say ok, or that?s good when they poured my drinks, usually you end up with more booze then you do mix. The one thing that really disappointed me this year is the little vendors on the way to the beach were not always there. I loved being able to pick something up to bring home to my friends and family without having to go into town. Although I did make a couple trips into downtown Varadero. (Note: if you take the double decker bus and want to get down town quickly, make sure that you get on the bus on the same side of the road as the bus, (they will stop on the other side of the road, and otherwise it will be well over an hour to get to town as it stops at every resort along the way, which is neat at first to see them all, but really is a pain if you don?t feel like seeing all the other resorts. I did the whole tour on the bus 2 years ago but I did not this year, I got off at the market and checked out all the different things ( you can haggle the people quite easily, but make sure you check out prices of other vendors first because I paid double for something someone else was asking and that was after haggling them). The beetles restaurant is pretty awesome, the food was really good and it is neat to see all the pics and memorabilia. A few other things, I was at the resort Easter weekend which is also a Cuban Holiday (not Easter, they do not celebrate it from my knowledge). Most of the hotel was filled with Cubans and Chileans. Not that it was a issue, but I do not speak Spanish (very limited) and I was there by myself. So it was quite lonely, they were all very friendly however and tried to speak to me but the language barrier made it difficult. Since I was a return visitor I should have been invited to the returners dinner, I was not, but since I eventually made friends with a lovely couple from my province they told me about it and I got to go. The meal was wonderful and they seat you with a staff member, who told me that the hotel had plans for 9 million dollars in renovations. Hopefully this happens as the hotel is in quite desperate need. I would love to go back there but only if they put these renovations to work. It has a wonderful atmosphere and it is a shame to see it go to a complete dump. They had the entertainment inside the disco which I did not like as it was too hot and you had to stand because there was not enough space. The performers were absolutely amazing. But new costumes would be nice. As well. The service was decent, however who ever was the maid of my room had stole food I had brought with me (due to my allergies) I should have complained but I did not. The beach was nice and clean and I would have to say the most beautiful one of all the resorts in varadero, after walking up and down the peninsula it just looked amazing and perfectly laid out. The only thing I really miss is the deck around the beach bar. It is soo hot walking from the bar to the beach, and the deck used to really help with that. I was lucky this year with water and water pressure as a few years ago it was cold water and low pressure. I am late writing this review so I know I am most likely leaving a lot out but if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me and I will do my best to advise you of my experience.

        “Satisfied ”
The hotel Aguas Azules is getting old and when hotels get old in Cuba, you can't expect too much. I've been to this Hotel 3 times, and every time I see that the quality is decreasing. It still "ok" but if they don't renovate it will fall apart in a few years.... When it rains, the lobby is not the place to stay or you will feel like Jack and Rose in the Titanic! The ceiling leaks and the stairs look like Niagara Falls... When I arrived it took 2 minutes to check-in and the bell boy was ready to help me with my luggage. (Roque, he's been working there for many years and he's really a good guy, always helping with whatever you need) I was in the bungalow, 2nd floor. The room was clean but could have been better. The AC was working only in the bedroom (not in the kitchen) but it was enough for me. Make sure you take the big blanket OUT OF THE ROOM, it's the only thing you should never touch! It's dusty and disgusting! Ask your maid to take it out and change your bed sheet every day and you'll be good. Pillows are hard like rock but the bed is OK. For a 3 stars hotel, it's ok. You have TV, fridge and safe (15$ / week! not included!) Shower is warm but not hot and the door doesn't close tight so your bathroom floor will look like a river every time you shower. Buffet is good, but it's always the same thing and the only thing you are never sure to have is butter... if you give 1 peso you'll get a good service, if you don't you won't get your drink for sure!! Buffet is opened from 7am to 10am - 12:30pm to 14:30pm - 18:30pm to 21:30pm. Italian restaurant is ok but I was not impressed and it was looking like the buffet without the kids running everywhere. The beach is amazing and even if you go in the afternoon you will have chairs. You can take the pedalos and catamaran, it's free. The bar at the beach is opened from 10am to 5pm and it's really at the beach so you don't have to walk back to the lobby. You also have a grill not too far from the beach to get a hamburger or sandwich opened from 11am to 3pm. At night there's always a show at 9:30pm at the disco (Pyramid) and every night it's different. Around 10:30-11:00pm the place turns into a disco and you can dance. The bar is opened all night long until the disco close at 12:30am. After you have to go to the lobby if you want to drink so parties are not always all night long. Every week is different at Aguas Azules, depending on what type of visitors are there. I was lucky enough to find good people to have fun with but if you travel solo, chances are good that you don't meet a lot of persons from your place. There's a lot of Chilean, Venezuelan and Cuban staying at the hotel and most of them don't speak English at all so you'll have to practice your Spanish if you want to have fun with them! My first week there were not a lot of Québecois there but the second week we were about 20 in the hotel. If you need to be with tons of Québecois, it is not the good hotel for you. I was lucky and we had a lot of fun though! Advice: if you have to change you money to CUC, go to the real bank! (Plaza Americas or downtown Varadero) because if you change it at the lobby they will charge you extra fees.

        “Great for Budget travelers ”
We arrived on 11-18 May 2014. Please keep in mind hotel was built in 1970 so not much has been done/upgraded since. It rained last 4 days of our stay. Whenever it rains, the whole place leaked. We kept having to move around to avoid pouring rain. Our room got flooded whenever it rains. Only one pool opened, other one was all green and dirty. Food was surprisingly good. Lots to eat, taste great for a 3 star. However, some air conditioning would have been nice. We were eating and wiping our sweats at the same time. There was no entertainment, just few nightly shows. Staffs tried their best to accommodate the guests. I don?t want to say much as you get for what you pay for. Would I go back, not certain. You can a nicer hotel for the same or lower price. I think Sunwing charges too much for this hotel

We spent 4 days there. The resort is quite big and has a lot of amenities, but needs improvment. We stayed on the 3rd floor so we had to carry our suitcases by ourselves, cause there is no elevator! the food was terrible and the plates and cutleries not cleaned propely! Apart from that, the staff was very nice and friendly. The animation team was great and very talented, good job.

This is a fine hotel for budget minded travellers. No fancy frills but most of the staff are friendly. The food is bland but safe and there is always something to eat. I wish they had pizza or fries available at the snack bars like other hotels. The pools that were open were nice and the beach is absolutely amazing! There was never any trouble finding a lounge chair at the beach or the pool. The nightly entertainment was good. Lots of Canadians and Russians staying here.

“First Time In Varadero, Cuba ”
We vacationed at this resort from March 29 to April 5, 2014. We had read MANY reviews both good and bad before we flew out from St. John's. If its luxury you are looking for than you may want to spend more money and go somewhere else. If you are looking for an in-expensive vaca that includes BEAUTIFUL sand and ocean than this is your resort! We always found something to eat, lots to drink and friendly faces all around. Look for Rocky to bring your luggage to your room and Santana at the dining room!! We always crashed early because we were always up early and after breakfast, hit the beach!!! We were toasted when we came home but were able to relax and enjoy everyday. We did the Dolphin excursion; a 30 minute boat ride to an off-shore "aquarium", this was the highlight of our trip!! Weather was perfect, boat ride was awesome and the up-close, dolphin experience was incredible!! The down side is the food-as we were told, you don't go to Cuba for the food!! There is always something to eat-but after a few days you do get tired of the same-old, same-old. We went of the beach experience and that didn't disappoint-incredible!! For value this is a great resort-for luxury, you may want to go elsewhere. Oh, the Airport arrival terminal is a breeze-Departures is a nightmare!!! For us, a 3 hour wait in a total of 4 line-ups was almost more than we could bare!!! My heals are still aching! Tipping seems to be a requirement not a suggestion; before service NOT after. So many employees asked/suggested tips before/after a service was performed. This may be a symptom of vacationers offering money for tips before service in the past. We may have created our own monster?.if you have any questions please ask away!!!

“a three star with some five star thrown in!! ”
We arrived at the resort around 1:00am in the morning and thank goodness there were only a few couples staying at this resort from our flight. One person on the front desk and not the quickest, but most of the time front desk is the same most places. Our bungalow was about as far from front desk as you can get, glad we had Eric to pull our luggage for us. Speaking of bungalow, great space, clean, air conditioned, worth the extra few dollars it cost. Our maid Liley could not do enough for us, fantastic person, very happy and friendly. anything we needed she was there to help us out. Our pool turned green on sunday and did not open till friday, that's when they closed the other pool down. They had the red flag posted on the beach because of undertow on wed. and thurs. so that only left one pool for the resort. that is probably my only real complaint about this place other than front desk. If you need towels, water, pillows, toilet paper, talk to your maid. We were shocked with the food, were not expecting to eat at resort that much but we did. first night, buffet was terrible, not surprised!! Next day we went into varadero to a great restaurant (kiki"s) for lunch, great meal, large portions for little money. That night we went to buffet to check out, food was suprisingly good, and remained good the rest of the week. We had 2 alacarte restaurants, cuban and italian, both worth booking. Most bartenders were very good, with a few who would rather talk to other staff members instead of serving drinks. The resort is in need of a makeover but for the money you pay at this resort i would probably go back. When all is said and done, we had a great holiday because of our 5 star maid Liley, the beach and the bartenders.

        “Aguas Azulas ”
This was my first time in Cuba and definitely not my last. The resort is tired and shows it age;however the staff are five star. Our room (main hotel) was fine and housekeepers were in everyday by noon. The fridge did not keep things very cold and is only stocked with water if you are Sunwing. There is a 25.00 deposit for towels (we brought our own). It also costs 20.00 to use safe for the week. The air conditioner kept the room cool but the dial was broken so we could not adjust it. We had a balcony with ocean view. Many room only have a french balcony (you cannot walk out on it). The beds were comfortable with flat pillows (all day in the sun we slept just fine). We never saw a bug in our room. Always had hot water and there were three in our room. Pools: Pools were good but the larger one was closed for three days due to algae. Once it was opened it was the best place to hang out and the snack/bar was great (Trinidad). Loungers were in brand new condition and easy to get a spot in shade or sun. The hotel was no where near full during our stay. Beach: I cannot even explain the beach it was amazing and the loungers were all great and easy to get a spot. The bar near the beach had slush machines and great drinks. We had two red flag days and life guards are strict with the no entry to the water rule - so please respect this as their lifes are put at risk when vacationers ignore the flags. Food: We did not starve and could always find something to eat. There are no french fries or pizza at this resort except there is pizza at Italian a la carte. We did not go to any of the a la cartes. The main buffet is tired and very hot as there is no air conditioning and hasn't had any for many years. The bread is fabulous. Choices are limited so go early. No one in our group was ever sick. There is a coffee shop on second floor it has wonderful coffee. Snack bar grill by the beach has great burgers and also does eggs in the morning and ham on a bun. There are quite a few cats that will sit by your table at outdoor spots while you are eating - I did not like this. A cat sprayed in the area of the coffee bar on second floor - while this cannot be helped someone could have mopped but it was not attended too for some time. Internet is available (5 pesos for 30 minutes). It is like dial up but if you need to get in touch with home this is an economical way. Computer is available 9-5 in the post office across from gift shop. Gift shop has large bottles of water for 2 pesos and then refill at any of the bars. Mosquitoes are bad at the resort so if you are prone to bites wear bug spray. Bartenders also suggested rum on legs to help ward them off as they are in the bar/lobby area. Bartenders were throwing rum on the floor behind the bar to keep the mosquitoes at bay in the evening. No issue with sand fleas; however, I avoid beach at dusk/dawn and when the sand is cool. This resort does not spray for mosquitoes. Staff, including entertainers were all wonderful and very friendly even though there is a language barrier many can speak English quite well. There was entertainment every night in the disco and daily by the pool and this was a lot of fun. In my opinion the hotel could use more staff to be working in the main areas and bathrooms. Bring gifts (deodorant, shampoo, old clothes for housekeepers and don't forget the Entertainment staff as well. Transportation: We used double decker bus (5.00) and it is a great way to see the area. A cab cost 12.00 for two of us to return from town. Kiki's has great pizza - it is on calle 7 or 8. We changed some money at airport upon arrival but then went to Bank to change more - you need passport to change money. I only paid 660.00 for package and was satisfied; however would probably not return due to cleanliness. I believe other resorts have more food selections (fries/pizza); however, heard similar complaints about food at higher rated resorts. The one issue I had was cleanliness of the hallways in hotel and pool/beach bathrooms. I knew tissue could be an issue but the washrooms were filthy by 2 pm at the pools and required more attention. In one hallway there was a "used condom" that layed on the stairs for days- we used another stairwell whenever possible. Another vacationer found same on a lounger on the beach. Now vacationers should know better but these areas of the hotel should be cleaned more often. Would i go back probably not, unless the deal was 500.00 (which I have seen) but I would definitely go back to Varadero. If you are booked do not worry about anything you will have fun and will not go hungry unless you are incredibly fussy. Bring facecloths, bug spray, sun screen and an insulated cup and enjoy the staff, beach and pools.

        “Great Budget Holiday”
This was my first time walking through a Cuba-owned resort. Yes, it is a little run-down and the buffet is quite limited. If you are looking to physically and emotionally be in Cuba and not a European/North American standardized resort then this could be a possibility for you and it will be great value compared to all those other resorts. Their entertainment program is on a 14-day rotation; so they are definitely used to guests staying longer than your typical 7 nights. The trick, if you ask me, if you insist on staying here is to make sure you book a bungalow rather than a typical room. These can book quickly, there are only 80 bungalow rooms on the property. But it will definitely be more comfortable as it has air-conditioning and more space.

        “Typical 3 star ”
Just got back from Aguas Azules on my 3rd trip to a mid rates Cuban resort. I can honestly say most of the negative reviews are a GROSS over exaggeration. This resort is very typical of a Cuban 3 star! We booked a bungalow and it was clean and well maintained. Also had a friend in a regular room and hers was just fine too! Food was typical Cuban. We were always able to fill our plates and never went hungry. I suggest the beach grill for lunch. Staff were always very friendly and helpful with anything we needed - but we have manners. The beach was beautiful. Pools weren't always open but it didn't really matter to us. Sure the hotel is showing it's age, but if that ruins a holiday for you stay home. We found the resort to be very safe for women - at all hours of the day and night. One word of advice - bring bug for both day time and night time. Again, this resort fits it's rating perfectly and provides everything you could need for a great vacation!

“Two 21 year olds, Had a blast ”
As two 21 year old girls, we had a blast... We got the trip super cheap and went with an open attitude. We stayed in the main hotel part which was far away from everything but we didn't mind the walk. The rooms were okay.. (we didn't go to spend time in our rooms) A few people we met stayed in the bungalows, which were nicer and closer to the beach and pools. We didn't have any complaints about the food.. omelets and toast for breakfast, lunch on the beach was hamburgers and fries(ketchup was fine!) and supper we always found something at the main buffet. Went to one a la carte, was great! Service was fantastic for us, all the bartenders were very friendly. They didn't have slushy drinks like previous resorts I've been too.. But always found something..lived off of banana daiquiri :) No bottled water..drink from taps at the bars. We drank it all week and both didn't get sick once! Night life was great too, we missed a few shows because we lost track of time, but the ones we did get to were good! There is a disco, it closed early, but the 24 hour bar was always lively afterwards. Entertainment at the main pool, started around 3pm which is when we would move from the beach. Lots of music, volleyball and games. Rented scooters from the resort and toured varadero all day with a few people we met at the resort. Great time! Highly recommend! Super cheap too! Met tons of great people! CONS: Arriving the first night nobody showed us where our rooms were, after about an hour we finally found it on our own. We arrived at the resort late at night (probably 11pm) So it was a bit frustrating! Check in was fast! The main hotel part where we stayed was a bit dirty(halls), our room was fine. We didn't care though, because we didn't go on the trip to spend our time in the rooms. Had lots of toilet paper, always had warm water in the shower.. Our flight was delayed leaving by 5 hours that night, but we got to stay at the resort and drink so it was fine ; ) Nothing we could control. If you're hard to please, and complain about little things.. This resort is not for you. If you can go with an open mind and just relax and enjoy the sun all week, you will love it! I recommend it, if you can get it cheap! We didn't pay more than 600 each(taxes in) for the entire week.. Insurance and all

“Could be so much more. Buffet needs help. ”
So we arrived on Fri, Feb21. Had a bungalow. Lots of room and in pretty good shape. No complaints. Beach was the best, there was a guy to help with lounge chairs in morning, lots of cabanas. Drinks were very good. Food was just a stroll back from beach. Decent burgers but that was all there was there. Pool lunch menu had chicken sandwiches, burgers, ham and cheese. Aquatics show and dog show were quite good. We did not see anything else so I can't comment. OK, THE FOOD WAS PRETTY BAD. There was no air conditioning and the food was not on ice. Cheese was melting on their plates and the place stunk. You could take your food out onto the patio but the cat piss smell was disgusting. There were about a half of a dozen cats with cuts and scabs walking aroud the patio. One of the females was in heat and they were mating while I was trying to eat my breakfast. This may be common in Cuba but I will never go back to this resort for that reason alone. We only got to go to one a la carte. Italian. Pizza was pretty good and so was the wine. If you pay Rocky, the guy out front who I think looks after all the other guys, he may get you into one of the other a la cartes. WOMEN, DO NOT GET A FULL BODY MASSAGE UNLESS YOU WANT TO GET FELT UP AND GROPED. I still feel dirty.

“Beautiful beach, but BEWARE buffet!!!! ”
This was my second time at this resort, my last being an eight day stay in December, 2011. Sad to say, it was a less enjoyable experience. I was at the resort - a solo trip - from January 31 to February 14. The price was quite reasonable: $1188 for 14 days, and flying out of Hamilton {instead of Toronto} was a bonus. This was my 9th trip to Cuba in 4 years, and definitely the worst. My reviews are normally very positive, but there are some significant negative aspects that I am compelled to elaborate upon. I shall attempt to keep things relatively brief, but feel free to ask me any questions you might have. On the positive ledger, the beach is quite fabulous. There were plenty of comfortable, good quality beach chairs available, and a lifeguard was on duty. The beach was groomed frequently. Drinks were available at the beach bar. There are two pools on the resort. (1)The one by the older section of the resort [three storey block] has a twin pool, plus a small wading pool and a whirlpool. One of the pools was closed, as the filter pump was broken. There were plenty of good lounge chairs there, plus a bar. The bar offered no beer, however, but had everything else. This pool was quieter, and well exposed for tanning (with some shade available). (2)The larger pool was near the bungalows. There was a bar {with beer} and grill there, a ping pong table, and constant music or activities. Definitely it was more crowded and noisy there. I personally preferred the other pool!! The Grill Vinales [on the way to the beach] was the best option for lunch or a mid-afternoon snack. They offered well-cooked hamburgers [which are actually pork], hot dogs, hot sandwiches, fried eggs, etc. The cooks were very competent, friendly and attentive, and I actually enjoyed the pork burgers, which were properly cooked. They had no buns, but did toast bread if you preferred such: I ate mine like a 'minute steak'!! The coffee bar [Coffee Corner/Penon], located in the main 'social area' [where the 24/7 Lobby Bar was] was quite pleasant and served excellent beverages. My room was in the older section, on the 3rd floor. It was quite adequate, and kept very clean by my maid Lacief [Lacy]. The bed was quite comfortable, and there was ample hot water and water pressure. The AC was adequate, but had to run 24/7. The hallways were quite dark and dingy, however. The elevator in that section was not working = lots of walking!! Some people had problems with their rooms, but staff either corrected such or moved them. Apparently the bungalow rooms are very spacious and pleasant, although I did not see in one. There are some negatives which must be mentioned to give readers an 'honest picture' of the overall 'status' of the resort. [1]Generally, the staff was pretty friendly and helpful, but not all, and there seemed to be an atmosphere of discontent and uneasiness. Rumour was that the resort was being sold to the Memories chain [which would be a good thing]: were staff members therefore worried about losing their jobs?? Such would certainly explain the overall negative atmosphere. [2]The grounds have been allowed to deteriorate in certain respects, since I was last there. Most prominently, the once-lovely and pristine man-made canal (full of interesting statues) is now a foul and muddy swamp. Why was this allowed to happen?? [3]The older section of the resort needs some 'sprucing up' and TLC for sure, but is a solid, impressively-built structure. [4]There was NO bank at the resort. The front desk exchanged currency, but charged a 4% fee off the top, then gave a poor rate. This is quite unreasonable. [5]By far, the BIGGEST issue I (and everyone else) had was with the buffet. The air conditioning was NOT working the entire two weeks that I was there, creating a hot and unpleasant dining experience. Such was unfair to both staff and guests, and was simply INEXCUSABLE!!! The table clothes were frequently stained, and most uninviting. Flies were a constant problem, and there was often a shortage of servers. Because it was so hot in there, the cheese, liquidy yoghurt and cold meats were NOT, in my opinion, safe to eat!! The first week was actually TERRIBLE in the buffet. They were running out of bread and fruit at many meals, and NOT replenishing such. There was often no butter. I was so dismayed that I asked where I could register a complaint. I was directed to Sara in public relations. Sara was both empathetic and sympathetic, and said that she would look into such. And that she did!! I frequently saw her 'checking out the situation in the buffet' following my complaint, and those issues were corrected. If you go there, and have problems, definitely see Sara!!!! Overall, the food was VERY POOR. There was rarely any freshly grilled fish {always a favourite to me}, and what was offered on the grill was generally far from enticing. Most meats and fish were 'floating' in some form of gravy/slop, which I simply refused to sample. Generally, I ate mainly bread and butter, fresh fruit {there was good papaya and red grapefruit}, and 'pork burgers' from the Grill Vinales. The ice cream is quite light and pleasant. I FULLY REALIZE that one does NOT "go to Cuba to eat" but the lack of air conditioning in the buffet, and the poor quality food offered resulted in an INTOLERABLE situation. Because of the EXCEEDINGLY NEGATIVE CONDITIONS in the buffet, I would advise people to "stay away" from Aguas Azules unless these conditions are corrected, or they are irrelevant to you!! Hopefully the problems in the restaurant will be rectified. After talking to people at the airport, who had been to other resorts in Varadero, I got the impression that conditions, in general, had DECLINED at most resorts in Varadero. I have had much better experiences in Cayo Coco and Cayo Santa Maria, and will NOT likely return to any resort in Varadero. If Memories does take over Aguas Azules, I think there will be changes for the better.

        “Not so bad... ”
We booked this resort last minute and I didn't read all the reviews until after we had booked. After reading them I was scared I had made a big mistake. We took our family (three kids 10,9 and 6) crossed our fingers and hoped for the best. It wasn't that bad. Okay, organization is not the strong suit of the hotel, nor is friendliness or helpfulness. If you are patient and kind though, most things can be resolved. Get to know your maid very well, we had Betty, and she was able to solve most of our problems for us (beach towels and bottles of water) I didn't find that the staff only worked if you tip them, they worked if you treated them like human beings and said please and thank you. Tips were always welcome, the $1 LED flashlights I brought were a big hit. The rooms were clean, the reason the tiles looked dirty was because they are chipped. The resort is run down and in disrepair. If mobility is an issue then you may want to think twice. Having said that, my father had just had hip surgery and did just fine (with no elevators) Beaches- beautiful, but watch the undertow Pools-fantastic! Clean and fun, great entertainment, games and dancing lessons. Bathrooms-the room bathrooms are fine, the rest on the resort were okay for the most part. Make sure you have toilet paper and hand sanitizer with you at all times. Food- food is the worst thing. Breakfast was good, the omelettes and bread were fantastic. Fresh fruit was good but limited. I tried the yogurt drink and was pretty sure it was dishwater. Lunch at the pool bars or beach bars are the best (beach BBQ had the best hands down but the wait time could be long) Supper: just go into town and save yourself the time. (Plaza America has a great pizza place on the second floor) The dining room is hot stuffy and smells bad, the supper food is not great. Bed bugs: there were none, and no sign of them ever being there but you will get bites from tiny little sand fleas in the evening so pack some bug spray. Also, if you have food in your room it will attract little ants and they bite too. So a little prevention goes a long way. So, altogether, it's not that bad. Take a cab into town or the tour bus eat out a few times and be nice to the staff ( they are understaffed and work very long hours) you will be fine. We had a blast.

My wife and I spent 4 weeks at Aguas Azules in April 2014. This was our 4th stay at this hotel. We had a fabulous time and will be returning next year! Some issues with AC in Buffet but that has been fixed, as well as, new elevators installed. New companies are looking at the resort and more renovations are planned. This is a great resort with excellent staff who are both professional and eager to make your stay as pleasant as possible. The buffet food suited our taste very well (except for the AC not working) and our maid did a great job in keeping our room clean and tidy. One evening, a thunder and lightning storm knocked our AC in the room but it was fixed within an hour of reporting it to the desk. The beach is awesome. Also, after being delayed 24 hrs. because of a severe winter storm in Moncton, it was really nice to walk into reception and hear ?welcome back Don and Marlene, your room is ready? ! I know that some people have expressed some negative reviews; but we are very satisfied with both the hotel and the service! A plus for us is that they have started on the renovations that are needed! Another consideration for new guests looking at this hotel is the number of return guests that come back each year; some more than once a year. That says a lot about the service and staff. And if you are looking at value for your $, this is the place to go! Another very enjoyable vacation!

        “Good vacations ”
We booked this hotel despite some unfavorable reviews.Today I can say that was a very good decision. We spent 5 nights and 6 days. We had a very good vacations. The staff was very helpful and nice. The room was clean and comfortable. The buffet was a decent quality and there were foods anytime. We had a Cuban day at the grill and the food was great. I know that the hotel needs some improvement but I think that I got a good quality/price. The hotel has a new director and he and his staff are decided to do it every day better.

        “Fantastic holiday”
I've been here in Jan 2014 for 10 nights with family (3 couples). Kindly asked for Bungallows on arrival and the Receptionist gave us 3 close to each other. The Hotel itself is amazing, huge palm trees everywhere, nice clean pool with bar. The beach side is the most beautiful I've ever seen, however the sunshades need refurb. The beach bar is also offers the most popular drinks and draft beer. The midday snacks were good. We usually hag burger which was tasty. Unfortunately the A'la carte restaurants were dissapointing. The waiters can't speak english, the food was cold and/or too salty. The buffet dinner was also poor quality, however we always found something edible. Overall nice hotel, but poor food quality. If you go there make sure you have your own big glass or mug, otherwise you have to go to the bar every minute. Many regulas guests had their own thermos which is a very good idea.

        “Phenomenal Vacation ”
Reading other reviews I was a little leery but... so glad we booked here. First and foremost, the staff was incredible. They are what made our vacation so memorable. The first 4 days the food was not so great, don't get me wrong, we never went hungry,...but the last three days were great. We did try all 3 A la Cartes and found the Cuban to be the best. We did have a bungalow (which I would recommend) and our maid never failed to leave nice flowers and towel creations. Jesus at the 24 hour bar is awesome at making everyone feel welcome. Don't let him fool you, he may look 29 but he's actually 49 lol We did not experience any problems with bugs. Enjoyed the golf and Catamaran immensely. Manuel the masseuse sure knows what he is doing. We were there from April 5-12 and will be booking for 2 weeks at the same time next year. We've met people who've been going there for 11 years and others for 5 years so I guess it's all on your disposition...

“First time in Cuba, had a blast! ”
First trip to Cuba, first time at this resort and we had a blast! The staff are incredibly nice! Our room was kept very clean! The food could use an upgrade, but we were warned about Cuban food before we left. Its very bland, in saying that we did not starve! The bread is awesome and our fresh omlettes every morning were great! We had turkey, pork, roast beef which was all really good! If they had of had french fries i wouldve given this resort a 5 star lol. The cats were a little annoying we felt bad for them. The coffee and staff at the coffee shop were great! And Rocky one of the front desk staff he was awesome! The beach was AMAZING! We got a cabana every time we went down. Their beach chairs r very comfy too. One of the pools was broken, one working and the big pool the chemicals were messed up so until the big pool was fixed we stayed at the beach and did the Jeep excursion, which i highly reccomend! But we took the good with the bad, and the price we paid i think we pretty much got the value for our dollar! I'd stay here again for the same price!!! Bring your own travel mugs for drinks, try the rum punch! Their drinks could be upgraded as well!!! The entertainment staff were awesome! Poolside entertainment every day was fun! There ketchup was pretty close to ours back home too i didnt even open my heinz lol. The grill by the beach had hamburgers, and if u ask for egg on a bun they have it and it tastes great! Overall we made the best of our trip, made lots of memories met some amazing people and had a blast!!!!!!

        “Negative reviews? Pish Posh! ”
Daughter and I were here mid Feb. Read horror stories (cats on grills, dirty toilets, rude receptionists,etc.). We experienced the following: comfortable, clean accommodation (bungalow, get those if you can), friendly helpful staff, beverages plentiful, food so_so(but we were prepared for that-brought our own sauces), well-tended grounds, no bugs (honest), one tiny lizard, lots of toilet paper, hot water (showers) and the presence of cats (only on the grounds). My only 'concern' was you had to walk a little distance to get to the bus stop into Varadero. A complimentary shuttle would have been great. (hey, I'm 70 and lazy). Everyone was having a good time, no disturbances (one fellow however did approach the staff loudly proclaiming that 'some $%&er had stolen his methadone...). The staff behaved very professionally and effectively in the aforesaid. All in all, I'd return. On the return flight, those in 4 star hotels complained of bad service. So go figure....

wow what a great family place. Our bungalow A1101 was spotless to much hot water and air worked perfect. the food was great rabbit, goulash, turkey dinner, the soups were to die for no need to take anything from home to Cuba. Our maid Alveria was so good as were all the staff. this hotel has been sold and they are going to do millions of dollars of renos . the staff were all attentive management was always present and visible the kids club personnel was spot on with short excursions for the children. 1 pool was closed for repairs as it needs a new pump. we will return to this very under rated hotel. come on travellers you are going to another country. relax and enjoy this great hotel. we returned March. 16th 2014 after 2 weeks.

The ocean was beautiful...Hotel was good....Cleaning, bar, pool, ocean and most food staff were excellent.... The rude staff work at the front desk.....! They were not nice at all. Armando gave a excellent spa. We did visit the nurse and some ointment was reasonably priced! She was very knowledgeable! Stuff to take...BUG SPRAY, ANTIHISTAMINES, PENCILS, BOOKLETS FOR KIDS...TRAVEL MUG FOR COFFEE! Please remember that your going to a third world country....if you are unable to cope with this then go elsewhere....its not for you...these people are proud of their country! “tropical and airy”
I stayed here from Feb 8th - 24th! I had an amazing vacation! From the time I arrived until I left I was meant with nothing but helpful and friendly staff. They work very hard with the resources they have available to them. I think sometimes vacationers forget that the staff are putting in very long hours in poor conditions. A smile and words of appreciation to them can brings some relief to their day. We stayed in a bungalow by the Trinidad pool and never had an issue with water or bugs. The toilet could stick if u didn't make sure the push flush did not come all the way up but was easily fixed by waiting a few seconds to see if u had to pull it up by hand. I travel with my own pillow no matter where I go so that was not a problem, if u are fussy that way I suggest u do the same as there is only one flat pillow on the bed. The room was always clean and the towels were changed daily sometimes they came after the room was cleaned. We flew with sunwing and always had water unless we still had a full one when they cleaned. The front desk staff were helpful and friendly. The Animation staff were great always in a happy mood and working hard to get u involved in things if u wanted to but not pushy if u did not. Duva was my favourite and we quickly became friends. He is a real gentleman and eager to do a good job and improve improve his English. If u go there please say Hi to him from Cindy and Sharri from Nova Scotia. We found there was always plenty to eat at the buffet and most of what I tried was good and in some cases very good. We really enjoyed all three of the el carte restaurants, both the food and the setting we very nice. The coffee bar on the second food was where to get your coffee. The staff there are always friendly and attentive to u. Despite long line ups and sometimes very cranky people they remained calm and took the time to make your coffee especially to your liking. I find vacationers sometimes forget they are suppose to be relaxing and there is no need to be in a hurry. Line ups for me was an opportunity to meet people. This is a 3 star resort and my 5th trip to Cuba. I have been at 4.5 star and 3/ 3.5 resorts in the past. This was by far my favourite one so far and I thought it was an amazing for a 3 star. Keep in mind it is a big resort with alot of walking and stairs. It was built in the 70's so it does have wear and tear. If this is something that would ruin your vacation then don't go there. It has been sold so I have no idea what the future holds for it. It was very affordable to me to take a 14 day vacation there this year. I am hoping the price will not change by a lot because I have been looking for a resort that I can return to every time I go to Cuba and this year I finally found it. Aquas Azules I hope to see you next year.

        “stop complaining...enjoy cuba ”
first off i have to say i was a little hesitant to go to this hotel by reading the reviews.having been to cuba and varadero before i had an idea of what to expect but the reviews were scaring me a little. Upon arriving, there was only 4 people to check in which was really fast. Bellboy brought us to our bungalow. The first room we had the toilet and sink were not working, but the next morning i went to the front desk and was changed to another bungalow with no issues at all. I'm not sure why people are complaining the front desk wasn't helpful and mean, as i had a pleasant experience from them each time, to either exchange money or to reset our room key card. The only downfall is the food needs to have more variety. the buffet was only half used and you can see the potential to improve with 2 work areas. Also in between meals there needs to be more than just hotdogs and hamburgers and ham and cheese sandwiches.a salad bar would have been great. A few nights after 11pm we went to the other pool and was served the yummiest griled ham and cheese sandwiches with lettuce and tomatoes and pickles. We brought the waiter a can of cocktail peanuts the next day to say thanks and he didn't forget us the rest of the week. The whole team of staff members from waiters/waitresses, bartenders, bellboy/front security and front desk were all pleasant to deal with. I tipped with canadian goodies and snacks not money and they appreciated that. we did leave tips at the end of the week as we were leaving. We missed out on cuban day at the resort but was there for some of the valentine's day events. That was the only time i saw the potential of the buffet being used and the food was amazing that night. We did eat in town more often in the evenings as my husband is a picky eater. please have an open mind when travelling to cuba, it is not the same as canadian standards, but they love canadians, russians, soviets, anyone who is not american and they will try to help you as much as they can. I also read comments about the locals coming in and destroying the place. we did hear from one animation guy that in the summer the locals come and destroy the place and it looks bad for canadians who come in winter. we did see the hotel at full capacity on valentine's day weekend and some locals did leave their empty cups and straws in the pool and on the grounds, but we cleaned them up for the staff. who really wants to see a dirty cup in the pool. We did see a pool guy around putting chlorine in the pool a few times and the garbages were changed from the groundskeepers so they try their best to keep it clean. do yourself a favor, instead of complaing about it, help them out, just pick it up! The beds in the room were actually comfier than the 4 star resort i stayed at in santa clara. And i ALWAYS travel with my pillow. Having been to cuba 4 times, varadero 2, i would not stay at this property again only because i have to try out a different place each time. But i would recommend this place in a heartbeat. Come with an open mind, it's a large resort, not good if you have mobility issues. They do however have wheelchair ramps so it is accessible. It's not a party resort so don't expect someone to entertain you 24/7. there is a small disco that goes till 1230, but if party party party is your thing, just get a cab to town, calle 62 is outside party. it was 15 pesos for a cab. also bring bug spray, the mosquitoes (or so the local's say) bite and itch a lot./i blamed it on sand fleas, but it wasn't my first experience. bring ammonia sticks for anti-itch.. as the crap we sell in canada doesn't work. i had to get hydrocortizone from the local pharmacy for the bug bites as my anti-itch cream wasn't working. i was told the ammonia sticks you can get in canada at any pharmacy works wonders. don't forget your peanut butter for breakfast if you're not an egg lover as that's all i saw for breakfast that i would consider breakfast.the omlets were tasty so enjoy them with toast. say hi to Rocky, and if anyone wants to cook for him he would love to try a canadian poutine :) i wish i remebered the other security guy's names, we talked to them all week. they were very helpful with varadero questions and called us cabs if we wanted one.take the double decker bus it's 5pesos to ride till 8pm. if you want a safe you have to pay at check in, and if you want a towel it's 25$ pesos deposit. we always bring our own. And if anyone can explain why there's only half a glass door for the shower i would appreciate the explanation.lol. make sure you have towels on the floor as it will get wet. there is a drain but it's angled away from the runoff of water and our shower water ended up in the hallway. We never had an issue with hot water or shower pressure, we had the opposite. we were looking for cold water. Just remember this is a 3.5 star property, don't expect luxury, but it's not terrible like most reviews i have read. We had a fantastic 10 days here. one last thing when travelling to cuba.. they run on their own cuba time, don't be in such a rush, you vacation goes by to fast, enjoy it,don't complain about it, most cubans cannot afford to travel like we can.And even if they do, they have to jump through fire hoops to get visa's and sponsor's to visit anywhere.

“lower your expectations and you will enjoy it ”
Its really important that you understand you get what you pay for in cuba. The staff was great and overall we got what we needed but we had very low expectations going into it. If any of the following will bother you dont stay here: Barely any towels Poor variety at buffet No mint for mohitos (sometimes) Dirty plates or no plates at buffet Having no where to sit if you dont line up for dinner as soon as buffet opens Bidets with no water pressure Luke warm water in shower No bottled water in room Climbing lots of stairs Cold french fries at beach grill No pizza at one snack bar as advertised Towels and linens with stains Flat pillows Obnoxious people complaining about the hotel because they were too cheap to book a 5 star If you can look at that list and still want to stay here you will have a blast... If you decide to roll the dice anyways dont complain about it. It ruins other peoples vacations : )

Great Staff animation, different pool side activities each day dance lessons by the pool, Cuban cocktail class, target practice, bingo. Nightly entertainment included Michael Jackson tribute, Caribbean dance night, guest beauty pageant, Cuban dance night, to name a few themes. We walked 3km each way along the beach and Club Amigo's was the best! Very friendly Staff. Language barrier at times but we got by just fine. Be generous with tips and be friendly and you will be treated really well. Buffet was pretty good, not great but we found our favourites. We loved the yogurt and omelettes at breakfast and the hamburgers at the grill were the best we've ever had. We would love to return to Cuba!

        “Awesome resort! ”
This place is awesome and I have NO IDEA what people are complaining about on here. To be honest, the pretentious people who complain about things that don't matter, I hope you do stay away so that I can go back and not have to see any sour apples. We stayed in a bungalow and it was very spacious, lots of towels, lots of warm water for showers and always clean. Highly recommend paying a few bucks more for the the bungalow if you have kids like we do. The food was fine and we always found something to eat. Yes, it could be cooler in the dining room, but I am not one to let a little warmth while eating spoil my trip. There were fresh made eggs and omelets in the morning, great bread and plenty of choices. The snack bars had plently of food like burgers and sandwiches. The bars were great and the staff super friendly. Always bring your own go cup so that you can avoid making as many trips. I never experienced any lines what-so-ever. I never made it to a show cause I have kids who were in bed by then, but my husband thought they were great. I'm growing really tired of people booking a 3 star hotel and complaining like children about things. If you are expecting the over the top treatment and amenities, then pay for it and go to a 5 star; you will make all of our vacations better by doing so. Love, love, love the staff. If you are human and know how to treat people with respect and courtesy, you will get it back in return and from what I saw, there are a lot of people out there that need to learn this still. Will definitely be going back.
