“Terrible, terrible service, please read the many warnings on here! ”
Before you book, please read reviews of this hotel carefully. I can honestly say that this hotel has massive issues with service. It took over 40 minutes to check in, even though there were only 4 people in front of us. Our room was disgusting and overlooked the carpark. We were eventually, after an hour offered a bungalow. We stayed one night before having to move again due to the bedroom ceiling having a leak. We moved further away from the complex and still couldnt fully settle. I have to add that the reception staff during this time were useless and ignored us for the rest of our stay because of this, even at one point walking away whilst we waited for 30 minutes to change money. It always seemed to be the same guy 'Hugo'. Service within the restaurants was very hit and miss, so too was the bar service. I heard one of the women within the buffet shouting at a guest as she had arrived 10 minutes after the breakfast time had finished. The best service both day and night was in the el marino place. The beach is amazing, you cant fault it, its the stuff dreams are made of, do not eat here. The food placed on the bar was being eaten by birds out of the pan. The entertainment is awful. Each time we used the shop within the complex we were short changed, purposefully it would seem as it was always the same amount. Check the change in front of the shop assistant and ask for the correct change. Work was taking place around the pool with drilling and Banging most days. The only thing that seemed to make this holiday awesome were the free flowing cocktails and the most beautiful beech i have ever seen. I wouldn't ever stay again, even if it was free!
“don't be fooled ”
We have just returned after a 3 week holiday here and this hotel ruined a much needed holiday. Don't be fooled by it's good reviews, we have stayed at other hotels owned by this group and they obviously leave this one as there budget buy. This hotel is very poor at best but does have good staff although the management couldn't run a tap. The bars are under staffed and very under stocked, often taking ages to get served and then to find out they have run out of everything people want to order. They even reduced the local beers down to 1 as the popular bucanero (stronger of the two) ran out day 4 of the holiday and was only replaced day 19. All proving this is being run on a budget and with very poor stock control, leaving the the customer to suffer. The beach bar offer weak larger (crystal) if they have any, plus rubbish pre mixed drinks with rum added in at the end to call them cocktails and the so call snack bar offers terrible half cooked burgers, ham and cheese toasted sandwiches, chips or paella all lukewarm at best, with a salad selection of cabbage tomato( if they have any) and cucumber with some Mellon, then 1 tub of ice cream to help yourself to if your quick enough. The beach is ok, the sand is course and filled with cigarette butts, the beach volleyball with it's constant whistle blowing and beach aerobics make sure there is no chance of you holiday being a relaxing one and they only ever comb the front part of the beach as it is obviously to much work to tidy the sunbeds to the back of the beach and comb it completely, o and not to mention the dog muck on the beach. The hotel's list of bar's sounds impressive but you soon find out there not, little cups for your drinks to be served in filled with ice to reduce how much you get, all in a place where fluids are vital to stop dehydration. The list of so called A la carte restaurants sounds good, that's about it, you have to book in 2 days in advance ( if your English ) to find the food served is good at best with a very small menu but don't expect great quality as you won't get it and you'll never see lobster in the seafood restaurant or Mexican in the Mexican we even complained about and walked out of the Italian as the service was shocking. The buffet restaurant serve a terrible breakfast, and if you want anything off one of freshly cooked areas you are in for a good wait as the queues are shocking. However the staff in here do all they can to keep you happy. Once you have finished eating if you do want to attempt getting a drink you will need to hover around the main bar and Sprint to the next table that becomes available and don't move for the rest of the night otherwise you'll be standing from there on. So there is no chance of seeing one of the shows as you will loose your seat. Now for the hotel itself, as I do property maintenance I can say this building is in very poor state with damage showing all over, very poor repair attempts, and the rooms are very run down and dated, our rooms door frames were rotten, furniture was damaged broken, and patched up to a make do level. The bed was filled with ants and was falling apart, the patio doors didn't close properly or seal leaving the room to be flooded with every rain storm, the fridge constantly switched on and off throughout the night, once you plugged the iron in the wiring smoked and burned and drew power from all other appliances that were in the room, in my opinion very dangerous.water often running out and a shower that went from warm to cold them boiling and even completely off.plus having to request for drinking water. Very low levels of health and safety throughout with large open windows at the end staircases so don't take kids. If you complained you would get a few cans of pop and bottle turn up in your room, as if that is worth it, or even just ignored. We complained to the Thomas cook rep twice in the first 5 days, he asked for a couple of days to try and put things right, at the end of week 1 nothing had changed, he came back to us and said he would look into moving us into another hotel, however we had met some great friends who started to make the holiday fun so moving hotel didn't really work for us and as we had then decided to book a 2 day trip to Havana at a cost of around £330 Inc spending money we would be away from this place and our new friend would be returning home at the same time so we would make our decision on our return. On our return from Havana we were about to start our 3rd week, there seemed to be a lot of maintenance going on and an influx of staff, impressed we thought, only to then find out it was because the owners were due to visit and stay, the bars had been stocked, there was staff everywhere and even the ones that had ignored you for the previous 2 weeks were saying hello. Service had improved repairs were being carried out, all a bit to late and all because of the owners visit. The hotel is used by Canadians as a cheap quick to get to destination and having spoke to many of them who do return here all there comments amount to pretty much the same, don't waste your time on a 10 hour flight when you have Spain within 4, this is Canada's Spain, or benidorm as we say. We have never complained about anything in the past or posted comment however we both feel having saved and earned a luxury holiday this was stolen from us by this hotel group, and Thomas cooks false ratings. If you have booked for this hotel please remember we stayed during it's low season so during peak this could only get worse as the staffing is the same, our advice would be cancel and go elsewhere.if it wasn't for the people we had met we would have come back home after the first week.
“Sol Palmeras stay ”
Just came back from varadero stayed in sol palmeras which was according to virgin had 4 stars. Not going to complain about the beach which was beautiful, Staff were okay nothing to complain about it, Cleaning standards are not very high. when it rains heavily do expect plaster falling from ceiling and water gushing from the lifts. Food is terrible , we stayed 10 nights apart from breakfast it was pretty much the same thing every single day just on one occasions for a change they had sushi and fajitas. They displayed the same food in 4 to 5 different places, you will see people walking around with empty plates on each station and trying to find something to eat. My wife even got food poising during the stay The only good thing i found about cuba was Havana tour and swimming with dolphins, Will i go in the same hotel gain never, never.
“DO NOT STAY HERE ”
First of all, the only good thing about this hotel was the room. It was clean. The negatives are the hotel ran out of basic liqour (vodka), We went and bought our own liquor, the pool was disgraceful, dirty. There is absolutely no service. Actually we were ignored several times. The employees behind the desk, would not even look up. We had to on several occasions had to get their attention. Unbelievable!! Hardly anyone spoke English. There was no help with our luggage even tho there were at least 3 or 4 employees standing around. I know the food in Cuba isn't very good, but it was soooo bad. The entertainment sucked. This hotel is not recommended for anyone other then for Spanish people.
“Poorly managed hotel, tips are on increase ”
I spent extra money for the luxury bungalow because was told by Sun wing Representative that I would be guarantee the room close to the both- the food court and the beach. When arrived we were placed in zone 5,which is 15 minutes away from all amenities, the remotest area. I spend the whole next day at lobby to get the better located room. I was asked to come at11a.m., then at 2p.m., then at 4p.m., then at 5p.m. Finally we got a room and moved. On the next day the construction people came to the next door room and started renovation. They painted the room with oil based paint. We woke up with watered eyes and unbearable smell.I came to lobby and complained and was offered another room. But it was the smoking room and it was the only one. With 2 kids I could not move there and we stayed and smelled the freshly painted walls of neighbor`s room for the rest of the vacation. All this stress process took 5 out of 7 days of our vacation. We were given written apologies and extra bottle of rum but it did not save our vacation. I also had very unpleasant memories about our tour to Dolphin adventure. Antonio, the crew guy on the boat, came out at the end of the trip and brought the mug literally asking everyone to pay tips, with words that 1 peso is not a good tip on this boat, 3 peso is not a good one either, and 5 peso would be very appropriate tips for this tour. After this trip we decided not pay any single tip to anyone at the hotel or on our way back.Whenever we go or wherever we go everyone expects you to pay,for drink, for smile ,for talking and that was upsetting. They were happy last year for small tips, this year they tell you how much in tips they expect. Kitchen utensils in buffet were dirty and many times I asked to change them. All of us (4 people) had severe diarrhea and 6 years old son ended up in hospital in Canada with intro vein treatment. Thanks god, this vacation is over.
I have just come back from cuba staying at the sol palmers hotel in standard room don't do it The room has 2 sockets and one on patio so small room it is old tried and need updating the bath had yellow marks on it the marble floor was stained there were water marks on bathroom ceiling as if there had been a leak the provided a kettle which had to be pluged in at side of bed mini bar was so noisy had to turn of at night . Don't shop at the mini market shop went in twice and thy tried to overcharge me twice So give it a miss The one good thing is the staff are great.
“Beach is great hotel is not! ”
Just got back yesterday from this resort. The beach is beautiful, the ocean is great. The food is cuban so the same as anywhere else in cuba. The staff is fine. The cons to this place-The room had mold everywhere you could just smell it, you could even see that they simply painted over the previous mold build up on the wall because it was showing through. We had the hardest time sleeping because of the smell and had headaches only while in the room. Note: its not the cleaners fault that this place isn't as clean as it should be, its the design of the washrooms etc. The washrooms don't even have an exhaust fan. This is my first vacation to a resort that does not put anything other than 1 bottle of water in the mini -->Bar<-- no beer really? Even to ask for a bottle of water to take with you to the beach or day trip was not possible this was a joke. The night life at this resort was not existent and to the point of absolute boredom on the rainy days. This place I would say is oriented towards spanish speaking travellers. I chose this place because of the good reviews but I honestly made a big mistake there is no way this place can be ranked #10 in varedero I've been to villa cuba 7 years ago and it was way better than sol palmeras, in all areas. The layout of the whole place is wrong very bad design, instead of having some sort of dancing in the tropicuba place up stairs the hold it in a narrow area between the stairs and fish pond.. They have a spanish singer singing between a small area of sofas, where it would make more sense to have that held downstairs with a bar stool set up. Honeslty it the place needs someone to take an objective undertaking of the entire entertainment set up. I would not recommend this place nor will I return to it . We did however hear many of our co travellers on the plane raving about how good the Riu and princess del mar were. cuba 3 times this was a let down.
“Find me the salt and pepper!!!!”
The only hotel where you had to hunt for some salt and pepper and quite often you couldn't find any.Trivial I know but this sums up this hotel.Asking at costumer services for a kettle to make tea as there was only a coffee making machine in the room,I was told it was a water heater,I tried to explain it only made luke warm coffee.I gave up in the end. After being ill and going to the doctors the next day and waiting for the little train to take us back to the doctors we waited 45 mins and the train never turned up.Husband going to reception to ask where it was / was told it was working outside waiting again someone told us it was broke, after waiting an hour and not feeling well was not impressed.Good points the gardens are lovely as is the beach room was ok and the bed was great
“Average food, service and accommodation compensated for by the gorgeous sun, sea and sand”
We arrived at Sol Palmeras late afternoon hot and bothered and in need of a quick check-in followed by a couple of hrs by the pool with a mojito or two. Unfortunately, when we entered reception, we were hit by chaos, noise and huge queues. Needless to say, a quick check-in it was not. The check-in staff were slow, quite rude and seemingly incompetent. It took, on average, 15 minutes to check people in which consisted of taking a copy of passports and handing over a key. I'm not really sure why it took so long. When we finally got to our room it was decidedly disappointing and not the four star accommodation we were expecting. It faced the car park and once on the balcony stank of diesel fuel and was very noisy. The room also smelt of stale smoke-the bedding and extra blankets also smelt. I went down to reception to see about a room swap as we were both so disappointed. It was our first big holiday together, our first 'tropical' vacation and we'd paid a lot of money-we expected better. I had to wait again to speak to someone who said he'd sort something out then left me standing there for 20 mins whilst he wondered aimlessly about handing out forms to people in the queue (rather than being behind the desk actually checking people in!) I prompted him (Hugo was his name) and he asked me the same questions. He offered us a room by the pool but having seem the sheer number of people hanging around reception, we thought it would be a nightmare. I asked about an 'upgrade' to a bungalow and Hugo was fairly negative, saying they'd be too far away! I said we were ok with that so finally managed to get a swap. Once we moved into our new room, we managed to get down to the bar/pool, without unpacking. That was approximately two hrs after arrival! The room was fine but uninspiring, shabby and certainly way past it's best. But at least it didn't smell-of stale smoke or diesel and it was quiet too. Once we'd had a few mojitos, we started to relax and enjoy the good weather and pleasant surroundings. However, disaster struck on our first night as I was awoken by a consistent dripping from the ceiling. Every 5 mins or so, a solitary droplet landing on my forehead. It was like Japanese water torture! Rest assured, we moved AGAIN the next day, after waiting for another 45 mins in reception, of course, whilst Hugo ignored me again. So much for a relaxing, romantic holiday in paradise. Our new bungalow was further away and up a hill and had, quite clearly, just been used by someone else as there were clothes and dirty towels in it. However, it was fine-quiet, relatively clean and there were no drips. The rest of our holiday went without incident and we had a glorious time-the beach is gorgeous and the sea was like against bath-these were definitely the highlights of our holiday. One thing we were disappointed with was the service. There were some really good servers in the buffet (Roberto in particular - who worked there and at the seafood restaurant in the day) and at the beachbar but the service at the pool bar was bordering on rude and the waiters at the bootable restaurants were hugely varied - from good at the Italian to appalling at the steakhouse. Speaking of the steakhouse, the food was disgusting. Steak was ok but the pate to start was repulsive and the mashed potato was clearly instant mash. Given the price and star rating, I'd have expected more than student food. Scratch that, I never ate Smash at uni either! the Chinese restaurant was decent (although there was spaghetti instead of egg noodles) and the Italian was good. The seafood was decent but but the Mexican was incredibly bland and inauthentic. The buffet was surprisingly good-lots of variety and decent quality given the quantity. The drinks were fine although they had often run out of mint and other ingredients. It was generally generic booze too-rare to see good quality spirits. The entertainment was incredibly dated and generic but that's fine-we were never bothered about organised ents anyway. However, there wasn't really anywhere quiet to sit and have a drink in the evening except for the pool bar which shut early. The rest of the place was loud and centred around the entertainment or in bright lights and lacked atmosphere. We regularly went back to the room with a couple of cokes that we topped up with some Havana Club! Overall, we had a fabulous holiday but that was largely of our own making and as a result of the divine beach and weather. Hugo was one of the worst hotel employees I've ever met and the food was disappointing for a couple of food lovers. I wouldn't hurry back to Sol Palmeras but I'd go back to Varadero in a heartbeat.
“Ok but 3* ”
Upon arrival from uk and a 10 hr journey we went to the reception to check in, reception staff were not interested in the slightest that we had walked to the desk and carried on talking amongst themselves. This is not how you expect things to happen but was not a reflection on every other staff member on site as they are helpful and smile, a special mention to Alain the bar waiter. Rooms are clean and adequate with a few signs if wear, food in buffet restaurant has good choices but are pretty much the same everyday for lunch and dinner. The a la carte are ok but have very small menus. The beach snack bar has undercooked burgers and are served cold, they also do very bland toasties and chips. Bars are good and drink selection good however served in small cups so it is worth bringing your own. Beach is gorgeous with free boats and Hobie cats, there is never a problem with sun loungers. The nightly entertainment could do with being a little longer as there is little else around. There is a bus which runs outside for 5 peso per person return to varadero or even better we took a 1927 taxi for 25 peso (£16) who stayed with us for 4 hrs taking us around Varadero to the markets, rum shop, local park and a secluded beach this was enjoyable and cost effective way to see Varadero. As a whole if they perfected the niggly problems then I would say yes a 4* but as it is a 3* at best is being generous. We did enjoy cuba and this hotel but dont expect complete luxury.
Just arrived back from a dissapointing holiday at this hotel, the beach location was fantastic and the staff were brilliant, cannot fault them at all. The food in the buffet was always cold and the food stations badly laid out with people pushing and shoving from all angles, me being typically British qued and would often be left with little or no choice of food, the al a carte resturants were not much better the best being the Italian and Chinese. The pool was dirty not once did i see a pool attendant clean the pool, the hotel was open to locals who took over the pool at weekends and were loud, dirty and disrespectful leaving glass and plastic cups in and arround the pool area. The 24 hour bar often ran out of beer and vodka and in the home of the mojito these were often unavailable. The lounge area was far too noisy at night and you couldnt hold a conversation without shouting over the dreadful entertainment which was poor and the same every other night not aimed at the English at all., i do appreciate were were in Cuba but some traditional Cuban music would of been great. One of the bars was closed for 5 days for a private function and could not be used, we were not informed at all. Our expectations were not aimed high as Cuba is a poor country however we did expect a little better. The best bit our trip was meeting some fantastic people from all over the world and the brilliant sunset trip sailing into the ocean and just watching the sun come down with champange, wow beautiful and relaxing. Havana was great the old cars AMAZING the piano and jazz bars faultless but dont bother with Club Tropicana, badly laid out and couldnt see the show at all you are better off finding a jazz bar and chilling. I am surprised that this hotel is on Virgin Holidays books in my opinion this is only a 2 star plus. Would I travel to Cuba again NO NO NO!!!!!!! this expereince has put me off completely I am not a compaliner and have travelled to many countries over the years but Cuba has left me feeling disappointed.
“Nice resort ”
This resort is nice clean and beach is stunning. My only complaint is the food. My husband and i both had bad stomachs he was really ill and still not well. We have reason to believe it was under cooked pork. We did raise the problem with our rep but nothing back. We will teyurn to Cuba mot sure to this resort though.
“SOL PALMERAS- best staff in Cuba ”
Spent 9 nights at the Sol Palmeras from Oct 26th to Nov 4th. This was my 8th time in Cuba, having stayed at 2star to 4.5 star hotels. This hotel is very nice. The grounds are beautiful, everything nice and clean. The staff here are the best I have encountered....always saying hello and making an effort. I thought that the service was higher than other hotels I have stayed at. For example, in the lobby there was plenty of wait staff taking drink orders in the day and evenings. There was entertainment consistently from 7pm to 10 every night.. either in the lobby or on one of the stages. There were activities everyday around the pool or at the beach if you wanted to participate. The lobby is quit large with a lot of seating available to sit, relax have some drinks and listen/watch entertainment. The food was actually pretty good! Especially Cuban night.. yumm.. as other people have mentioned, the a la carte restaurants were good as well. The staff in the buffet are excellent. I sat in the same area every meal and was able to get to know a few of the workers. Many thanks go out to idelmas and her fellow team workers.. they ALWAYS had hugs and smiles and worked hard to keep our glasses full and provide great interaction. I appreciated this greatly. If I was going to say anything negative, I would say it was the length of time I was without a functioning air conditioner. I was there 6 nights before someone came to fix the air conditioner .. after I asked 3 times. It wasn't until I mentioned this to my wonderful maid, and she apologized profusely.. that someone came and fixed it the next day . It took less than 10 minutes to fix. It seemed that a lot of people were having issues with air conditioners. The other things that I think worth noting: NO Canadian flag flying out front of the hotel. The fact there is no swim up bar really is a draw back in my opinion. Not just for the ease of getting a drink, but any hotel with a swim up bar seems to make it easier to meet people and interact. This hotel is not for solo travelers unless you actually want to be alone..lol There were very few English speaking vacationers there. The majority were from Russia/Germany/Mexico and some from Cuba. ( I know this because of activities around the pool where people introduce themselves and say where they are from) One of my pet peeves, and it seems that mostly European people do this, people would put their towel on a pool lounger early in the morning ... and all the loungers would be taken.. but there are only a couple of people in the pool. Of course the towels would be there all day... So to step away from the hotel for a bit, I would like to talk about Downtown, Varadero. Taking the 'Hop on , Hop off " double decker bus that pics you up outside the hotel ( 5 CUC for all day)... we were in downtown for less than 1.5 hours and had at least 6 women ask us for money for their babies.... and one guy came over and just started doing some magic. When he was done he just stood there until I gave him some money. Now, I don't want to sound like I don't have an understanding of how poor Cubans are, because I do know. BUT.. I find the change in attitude of the locals a bit disturbing. A couple of older ladies were actually mad that I would not give them any money.... My point being , that if you have not been to Varadero in a few years or have never been there.. be prepared for local people to ask you for money. Give it to them or don't....keep in mind that Cuba is still the safest place I have ever been to for vactioners . A few other things, like the price of a bottle of water, the 500 ml that cost 50 cents a couple of years ago.. now costs 1 cuc or 1.50 cuc.. depending on how much the person wants to charge you at that moment. A word of advice, if you want to get extra water, go to the Plaza America . There is a little 'grocery store' there .. the 1.5 litre water bottles are 70 cents. It is a good thing that Cubans can run their own business now, but don't go overboard and take advantage of tourists. Speaking of the Plaza America, if you stay at Sol Palmeras, they have a little train that will take you there for free.. many times a day. I was very pleasantly surprised at the large number of venders at the Plaza America. I was there last year and the place was almost empty. :-) Many people think that you cannot bring wood products back into Canada. This is not true. As long as the wood is painted and or sealed you will be okay. Just don't bring back wood you find on the beach .. if you get my drift. All in all, this is an excellent all inclusive choice to stay at in Varadero Cuba. The Staff are excellent and should be recognized for their hard work and dedication to making your vacation a great one. Thanks! Janice
“Very good all inclusive hotel ”
This hotel is very good all inclusive . a good pick of food and drink. Lovely private beach and a good location for walks and travelling. All in all you can't complain about this hotel. There is transport provided onsite as the grounds are so large
“Good experience all round ”
Good hotel by Cuban standards. Location was first class being right on Valadero beach within walking distance to the only Golf Club in Cuba. Hotel was ALWAYS kept clean both inside and well tendered gardens which wrap around the hotel and pool area outside. As always you couldn't fault the staff, friendly, courteous and never without a smile for the guests. Food plentiful but can become repertious after two weeks but well presented and you will never go hungry. Within easy commute for sight seeing Havana and well worth the trip. This was my third visit to Cuba and as usual did not disappoint. If any fault at all, I thought that the evening entertainment was not as good as Sol Cayo Coco which to be fair( Cayo Coco entertainment team were exceptional). But couldn't fault the day time entertainment. All in all a good experience and would recommend this hotel.
“Top of its class for a 4star Cuba! ”
Arrival Was a quick check-in, an upgraded to a bungelow right away without asking. The bungelows are a short walk to the pools and beach, but great for more room if you have a family with you and want more privacy. extra water bottles were brought right away to the room on request. Rooms We had the bungelow. separate living room area with tv for the kids. outdoor shower and spacious and clean. small ant problem, i would bring an ant spray next time. beds were firm, but comfortable.Air conditioner worked fine, and water ran clean. food travelled solo with my two sons (7 & 5) no one got sick. my pickiest eater thought the food was great!. The buffet had a good selection, and there is always pasta and rice at dinner and lunch for the kids. The a la cartes were fantastic. we went to the italian, seafood and mexican. The food was very well prepared and was better than most 5 star resorts in mexico I have been to. The lady you make reservations with (Nivia) was very nice and helpful. and if you tipped well, you were always welcome back the next night without a reservation. All the staff at the buffet were pleasant to deal with. They all had smiles on their faces, and went out of their way to help and entertain my kids. The resort is not that big, so you were always greeted by familiar faces at every meal. pool and grounds The bar is not a swim up, but is located in the center of both pools. Tons of activities for both kids and adults. there is a pool side basketball court/volleyball court, beach volleyball, icecream shop, water polo games and pool side trivia games. They have poolside yoga, dance, water excercise, ping pong etc the entertainment staff is available, but not in you face to participate if you dont want to be bothered. There is a train that takes you to the hot tubs and out door massage. it is not far. Beach there is a breaker wall of sand with a 3-4 foot drop at the edge of the beach, but other than that, the sand was nice and soft. music played, and beach voleyball and water excercises took place on the beach, no locals in the area, beach is away from other resorts. one is being built next door,, and we couldnt see anyone at the resort on the other side of us. took the kayaks out one day, water was nice and clear and calm. sometimes the waves were good enough for boogie boarding kids club was 1-2 hrs in the morning and afternoon. had a few fun activities for kids, jumping castle, face painting, mini golf etc. staff was great with the kids. there is a game room with nintendos etc for the evening while you are awaiting the shows to start, or a rainy day. there is staff on site to assist the kids with the games and you can enjoy a drink in the lobby while they play, Shows I found the shows too late 9:45pm, the kids were too sleepy to stay awake. They did have a few earlier shows around 8:30, the michael jackson and water acro show in the pool was worth seeing and fun for the kids to watch, trips We took the double decker bus to the dophinarium? kids were 5$ to watch the dophin show, (they take cash only, no cc) did the day catamaran trip, in which we swam with dolphins, went to a small island and had a lobster lunch, and went snorkelling. kids under 7 were free, so i just had to pay. if you tip the dolphin trainer, the kdis got to ride the dolphin, while everyone else just stood in the water and pet them.(best part of the trip) Money They dont take US, so just bring your canadian $$ and they will change it there, the cuban peso is on par with the american dollar to give you an idea. anywhere between 1.13-1.16$ to the peso. I got some at the airport when we arrived, but the hotel will change it for you. For what i spent to go, and i booked last minute, the hotel was great for family and activities. There were a lot of repeat customers there. I met many people who had been to the resort multiple times. It did what i needed it to..it was affordable, the weather was perfect, and the food was edible and rooms were clean. Its not a fancy modern 5 star you would get in mexico, but remember you are going to cuba, so you have to expect the standards to be different. The friendliness and helpfulness of the employees made the resort. I would recommend this resort and return.
“We will definitely revisit this hotel ”
I see some of the reviews talk about the hotel, it is a bit dated and could use some updating but who cares about that really, well not us it is 25 years old and although a bit older we found it clean and the staff great. . We really enjoyed every minute of our stay, we may of gone with lower expectations as its Cuba but our expectations were exceeded. Gonzales at the front desk checked us in very quickly we upgraded to a bungalow for a measly 36.00 Mr Gonzales noted it was my husbands birthday while we were there and sent a cake and champagne to the room. He was such a nice person so helpful, so friendly made us feel welcome right away Armando took us to our room and was very helpful with anything we needed loved hearing about his life. the air conditioner in the bedroom froze the first night but it was fixed quickly and we loved the bungalow which was a few steps from the beach, The beach is fantastic, you can't beat it and the kayaks paddles boats and snorkeling are free, The pool area was beautiful and we never had any trouble finding a chair at the beach or the pool. We were pleasantly surprised by the food in the buffet. the ham and roast pork were really good, the beef is not the greatest but its Cuba and you should expect that. They had a fresh fish station, meat station and pasta station daily. Always salad and french fries each day, lots of options no need to go hungry, The Chinese a la carte was amazing, the Italian was ok, we were not fans of the sea food a la carte but it was all fair tasting. Idelmis at the buffet was amazing my husband called her a little firecracker, she worked so hard and so quickly such a nice friendly person and always there to do get you anything you needed, she spoke excellent English so we talked to her about her life and her family, just loved her. You may be surprised to know as we were that to work in the hotels in Cuba you must speak English, they have to take 2 years of English classes if they did not learn it in school, so you can speak to all the employee's which was really nice it may be a bit limited but for the most part we had no trouble conversing with anyone at the hotel, unlike punta cana where the majority of the staff spoke no English at all. We were warned there would be some construction going on in the hotel but it did not bother us at all, they were doing some work at the very front of the reception, They are building a brand new resort next door but that noise never bothered us, We would definitely visit this hotel again, we spoke to some people from other hotels on some of our excursions and they all had more complaints than we did and some of them were at 5 stars, You have to keep in mind your going to Cuba keep you expectations in perspective and you may be as pleasantly surprised as we were, Make the trip to Havana if you can, we did not take the bus we went by taxi, same cost it was worth the 110.00 cuc that we paid we had a tour guide Julio for about 90 minutes there is so much beauty and history there. We went to the market in Varadero and spoke to a guy on the street corner looking to bring people to his restraunt, it was called La Rampa and it was fantastic, we paid 13.85 cuc we had 2 huge lobster tails, salad vegetables and a mojito, absolutely fantastic highly recommend, we ate lunch there on Tuesday and even tho we were at an all inclusive we went back on our last night for dinner, same price but with 3 lobster tails, unreal and the people were so friendly, there home is in the back and they have a small restaurant holds about 20 people go if you can. you will love it, anyway this was a long review and I could go on and on, the people of cuba are amazing our time at Sol Palmeras was fantastic, we did not run into one single staff member who was not willing to do what they could for us, our maid each day cleaned the room gave us fresh towels and always left something special made from the towels and left little notes for us. We did take some things from home to share with them and boy are they appreciative of what you give them, next time we hope to take some school supplies and have Mr Gonzales take us to a village school to meet the children and give them some things that are not so easy to get there, we will definitely revisit this hotel. One more thing If you go off the resort take kleenex or toilet paper with you, hand sanitizer or wet wipes some places don't have toiler paper or they charge you for it, as well often there is no toilet seat no soap or paper towels, best to be prepared, all is good on the resorts so not to worry only in Varadero and Havana did we run into this problem, only takes once and you learn to take those items with you tho :)
“Great place to stay, not sure about 4* rooms though... ”
i have just returned from a week stay at sol palmeros and out first trip to the caribbean, what a great place, covers everything you need for a relaxing stay in the caribbean, all the staff are great, so very friendly and really can't do enough for you, the buffet restaurant is also a really great place to eat, lots of choice and varierty, alongside the 7 other a la carte restaurants. the layout of the hotel works very well and everything is easy enough to access, and being just a stones throw from one of the most stunning beaches i have ever seen is an absolute bonus. although the hotel was very very busy its nice to feel that there is plenty of space for everyone, by this i mean we never struggled to get a sun bed whether is be the pool or the beach throughout our weeks stay. i also really enjoyed the fact the boats and kayaks were free to use at your leisure, and the all inclusive bar was superb!!!! as great as the hotel is i must admit i was a bit disappointed by the room we were issued, it was a standard spec room, with king bed. the main era for my disappointment were things ill maintained and we seemed to have lots of broken things for example, the sink plug mechanism was broken meaning you could put the plug in, fill it but when done the release did not work so you had to pry it out to release the water, annoying!!! our balcony doors did not lock, the catch was broken, i had to wedge the door shut, and just hope for the best.... the plug socket at the side of the bed was loose and worked when it felt like it, also when something was plugged in would knock the side lamp off, one other thing to be aware of if you are British, and want a lazy night in, there is no english tv channels the best you'll do is CNN america news, the rest are in Spanish, french or german.... the room was okay for just one week, however from a 4* hotel i would have expected slightly higher standards and also free wifi wouldn't have gone a miss again in a 4* this should be an everyday essential.
“Will go again for sure .... ”
It was my best Solo trip ever. To go to Cuba you need to be open minded. It's my 9th time in Cuba but first time at Sol Palmeras and I loved it. The staff there is amazing , a special thanks to Alberto and Roni and escpacially to Olga from the Buffet :) ,I dont know why people say they are rude. Check in was very easy and fast, they were very helpfull. The beach is WOWWWW ..... What I loved about it , it's a private beach and their was long chairs available at all times. I realy liked the food, their was something for everyone's taste. You will love this hotel , I'm already planning my next trip there . Thank u Sol Palmeras and all the staff !!!!!!
“Pretty good ”
I stayed at this hotel for a weekend getaway with a few friends. Pros: This entire hotel was extremely CLEAN. The staff were very friendly. We stayed in a family suite loft style, very comfortable beds and kept clean. Cons: The check-in was absolutely brutal. Two and a half hours to check in is not acceptable by any means. Especially when the last few hours of sunshine for the day was taken up by standing in the lobby. When we spoke to the manager he didn't apologize or offer anything to us to make up for lost time. Not impressed. Buffet: Food was okay, not enough vegetarian options. At the snack bar, they offer hamburgers and fries. I ordered a plate of fries and the guy behind me ordered a hamburger. The chef dipped the hamburger into the oil of the fries and then put the burger on the grill. I, personally don't eat meat and I found that was disgusting. Also, I forgot my camera in my room on the floor while packing up and leaving and contacted the hotel the same day to hold it for me. They said they needed to speak to the housekeeper to see if she saw it, apparently she didn't. Finders, keepers I guess. I hope this review helps. Aside from the check-in, I did enjoy this resort and I would recommend it in the future.
“Brilliant holiday ”
Just arrived home after a brilliant holiday at sol palmeras the bungalow was amazing ,the staff were so friendly, helpful and hard working nothing was to much trouble for them . Five minute walk to a beautiful beach .The restaurant offered a vast choice of food at all meals of course you had the usual Brits that moaned about it but my husband and myself couldn't fault it , I would definitely recommend it . Awesome !!
“Great Holiday 4 out of 5 for Hotel ”
Stayed at the Palmeras for two weeks from 26th Oct 14 6 adults ranging 49 to 54 years young . As it was our anniversary we had a bottle of champagne ,chocolates , rum ,cans of beer and soft drinks in our fridge and some music played to us at a meal arranged by the management , our friend had a birthday and got rum and a cake brought to him a nice touch we all thought .We all had a great holiday weather good approx 30 to 35 degrees each day , sea was the warmest we have ever swam in clear with fish all around you , nice beach not crowded . Hotel pool almost too warm but cant blame that on the hotel ,always someone clearing up or sweeping around pool area , no problems with sun beds .All the staff friendly and helpful was a little quiet around pool except games times a bit of chart music would have gone a treat even with our age group also the Fun Pub just played cuban style music which to be fair the locals all enjoyed but only two english songs played all night made it hard to join in with the pub/club atmostphere .Food no problems at all always something to eat all hours of the day , drinks ok a 4.9% lager which they said was for the girls !! and a 5.4% for the men well im a stella person at home and loads of it but I turned into a girl and went on the Crystal at 4.9 !!at least the canned ones were . Rooms good gardens good just the entertainment just let it down at night the hotel entertainers work very hard all day playing games and do their best at night with shows but a tad more different shows away from the same music would be good , having said that we appreciate where we was and a few of the early shows in the main hall area like the MIchael Jacson show the BMX riders were really good but put on while people where eating and was more of a warm up show , a 70's music show which was playing more english music was graet every one was up dancing even after just finishing our meal but that then ended to soon , all people want is some popular music to dance to . Plenty of activities with the entertainers during the day on the beach or around the pool . Chinese and Mexican was our favourite restaurants . A few place look a bit tired but good to see painters and maintence men constantly working around the pool area and in the hotel to improve it also a brand new bar opened the last night we was there so the management are trying really hard to keep this place a success story . Try a Havana trip and see some history also the La Vaca Rosada restaurant in Varedero its a must great food good prices. All in all a great holiday although the hotel needs to keep up with the improvements
“Beautiful resort, fantastic staff! ”
My husband and I returned 1 week ago from our annual vacation to Cuba. We stayed this time at Sol Palmeras and truly enjoyed our stay. We arrived at 3:00 pm and our room was ready. We arrived at our ground floor room over looking the pool and there was a bottle of Champagne waiting for us in honour of our anniversary...nice touch. We checked out the grounds and it was absolutely beautiful!! They really pay attention to the greenery and keep it very clean. The beach was a quick walk from our room and it was gorgeous. Varadero, in our opinion, has the best beaches in Cuba. Plenty of palapas and chairs. Azul clear waters, white sandy beach, breath taking!! The food at the buffet was excellent, lots of variety. One thing that got me though, was that not all the food was labeled and I don't eat fish or seafood and was afraid to try some foods. But the Ropa Vieja (national dish called "old clothes) was the best thing I every tasted. We only tried the chinese restaurant, Oshin, and found it very nice. Being in Cuba, with the heat, I think men should not have to wear long pants to dinner and these a la cartes do not require it, all but the Italian restaurant. We spent our nights at the lobby bar and outside on the smoking patio. Carlos made every night wonderful with his attention to not just us, but everyone. Muchos gracias nuestro amigo Carlos!! The staff at this hotel was by far the best anywhere. Here are the best of the best: Olga at the buffet along with Mabel, Gentle and Jorge. Mabel and her husband at the El Caribeno, where we had lunch every day. The boys at the beach bar all were fantastic. Jorje at the lobby bar but especially, as mentioned before, Carlos. Would we come back again? Definitely!! Hasta la próxima vez!!
“food and beds ”
ok the hotel its good no smoking I do not like to have people smoking beside me when I'm relaxing the beds might need new mattresses as for the food 2011 excellent 2013 not as good as was informed they had a new cheffe who try to fix what was good but I allways try to find to eat the, personal are impeccable I expected to return in 2015 hope to have the room or similar as I stayed for the stay.
“GREAT PLACE TO STAY ”
Very impressed with our recent stay. From reception to restaurant staff, concirge to house keeping, bartender to beach staff this property is clean, bed not to comfortable, meals and drinks reasonable being vegetarian and non drinker. Not happy with WiFi, TV channels reasoable, Restaurant staff were helpful except one who was intrested in selling private excursions, in particular two restaurant staff were extra extra special in providing service to us , she is Leidys and Ocied. Kettle provided in rooms but no Coffee , sugar and creamer. See point having kettle in rooms Thanks for great stay
This may have been my first vacation, but it was a dream come true. I went with no expectations at all and was greatly impressed!! Such a beautiful resort and such friendly staff! Olga treated us like good friends, Carlos always made sure he said hi...even when we didn't see him. Estoban...super sweet and loves to make people laugh. Even our maid, yulenis, said hi when she saw us and thanked us every time. To me...the food was incredible! I heard people saying that it's bland, but I didn't think so at all!! Everything had flavor. I can't wait to come back to this resort!! Hopefully sooner rather than later.
“Great first trip to Cuba ”
**Realistic review - no mombo jumbo** Overall fantastic stay 5 stars Hotel: this is the oldest resort in varsdero but nicely designed for travelers. Resort is not too big which means less walking. Everything is just steps away, even the washrooms which is convenient for those nights you have doubles and beers all night. Food: everyone says food in Cuba is bad but honestly it is quite good. Disagree with others here as there is something for everyone. Beach: best in the world. Been to mayan Mexico, nothing beats Cuba. Beach is very close to resort which is great. Bars: fantastic. The lobby bar stocks import hard liquor like vat 69. Night life: there is a club on resort. It starts popping at 11. For those of you that are early sleepers, the club noise is well sound proofed. Service: fantastic friendly staff. Thank you
“Great hotel , fantastic staff, good location”
Not sure why it has taken me so long to write this but we went to Cuba for the first time in July , beginning of August 2014. We really did not know what to expect which was good because it was all an adventure. I had spoken to the hotel before going there just to get a feel for the place and ask some questions , on email they were so friendly I knew it was going to be good. The manager I spoke to on email was Dayana Martin Orrantia , she was so helpful and informative. We flew to Havana and then had a transfer to Sol Palmeras , this was 2.5 hours which was a long transfer and really that was only only drawback. We arrived at the hotel and went to the main reception and gave our names in (there were 8 of us) , the receptionist asked us to wait one moment which we did and then we were greated by Dayana with a kiss and lovely greating. This was such a nice thing to happen it made us feel so special. We were staying in the bungalows which are to the side of the main hotel and wow were we happy to stay there, they were really spacious and we were lucky ours was just 66 paces from the beach, fantastic. There was a great choice of restaurants , Chinese, Italian , fish, Mexican, steak house and the main buffet, my favourite was the Italian , it was a great atmosphere and the food was excellent. However all of the food we had was excellent. Then there were all of the staff form the management to the gardeners, all so friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them, you just had to ask. One of our favourite members of staff besides Dayana was frank who was mainly at the pool bar, whata great guy and made us feel so at home and made sure our glasses were never dry :) . The gardens were really great and very well maintained and the entertainment was everywhere without being in your face which was good. The beach was fantastic with clean sand and lovely water, you could walk quite a distance around to the neighbouring hotels. We found everywhere was very safe as we went for walks either on the beach or in town and never felt difficult at all. We also took and excursion into Havana which was excellent, were hired a minibus and guide between us and spend the day in the city which was excellent. I would say if you want to have a holiday with a lovely beach, fantastic staff, great food and lovely rooms (I can only talk about the bungalows) then Sol Palmeras is for you . I would say there were a couple of areas that could be looked at , one is the internet is fairly expensive and limited in where you can connect (I believe this is common to cuba ) and the other is the catermans on the beach had to be taken out by a member of staff so I was not allowed out on my own which is always lovely to do when I am on vacation. I assume it must be something to do with insurance but I don't know. Other than that FANTASTIC and thank you so much to Dayana , Frank and all of the great staff at the hotel, it makes a big difference when going on holiday.
“Brilliant Stay Yet Again ”
This was our second visit to this hotel and there will definitely be a third. When we arrived the reception was very busy and slow to check us in. This didn't bother my partner and I as we just went to the bar and got a drink while we waited on the queue going down. In the end all Thomas Cook passengers were taken into a separate lounge and were all quickly given our room cards. Our room was on the 4th floor and we had been upgraded to a suite which was fantastic. Hugh balcony with table, chairs and sun loungers also ther was a bottle of champagne in the fridge for us(nice touch). The rooms are not modern but are clean and comfortable which in my opinion is all you need as you are only sleeping in it. The pool area is lovely and yes there is some work being done but to me this is a positve for this hotel. We didn't spend much time at the pool as the beach is absolutely amazing. We were there every day. The bar at the pool was great really friendly staff. We didn't eat much at the beach bar but what was on offer was fine. The entertainment at the beach and pool area was fantastic the staff did the very best to make sure everyone was having fun and they did not pressure you into participating if you didn't want to. The Buffet was great so much to choose from. In the evenings we always booked the a la carte restaurants. The Chinese was the best but steak house,Mexican and Italian were very good too. Last yr we done a lot of the excursions but this yr we just chilled out. I would recommend the Overnite Havana trip it was superb. We enjoyed the entertainment at night. There was entertainment in the lobby bar also the outside stage and the Tropicana So in my opinion something for everyone The main thing about this hotel is the staff. From the gardners.the girl at the ice cream stall, the guys at the beach, the restaurant staff maid service and the bar staff. They are all amazing especially Reimy,Francie young Hector and best of all Mylene. Nothing was too much trouble for these people. They went out of their way to make sure you had everything you wanted. I would recommend this hotel to anyone as it is fabulous. We have been to many destinations Mexico being one of them which was amazing and I would put this holiday on a par with our holiday in Mexico. We will definitely be back next year and I know with all the renovations happening It will be even better. Can't wait to go back. Also the weather in September is brilliant nice and hot.
“lovelly stay ”
lovelly hotel, excellent staff, brilliant location. a really nice place to visit was a bit cautious of previous reviews eg pool repairs- yes they was repairing the paths but the caused no inconveinence, better to be done in the day than at night-so get a life. entertainment was brill one of the best hotel entertainment we have seen.food was varied and as i am somewhat fussy even i found a good selection if we wanted english food i would of gone to london im told by the management(directly) that a rolling upgrade is in progress which you can see being done,as its hard to do and keep hotel open regarding staff they do an excellent job and they are freindly our waitress always had a table ready when she seen us come in the gardener sells the fruit coconuts at the beach which is a nice touch. francine at the top bar is lovely very friendly and a credit to the hotel!!! told us about the area. we did venture one night to the marina- dont waste your time its a closed area and dead at night. the reception staff booked us a car to go to varedero asked for a open top pink cadalac and they got it. went to a local resturant as its nice to see the local area. car came back three hours later to take us back. a great experience and photo for grandchild to show we went in a barbie car. down side of hotel- just watch what you are charged in the shop as on two occasions tried to charge more than what was on the ticket./ very apologetic when pointed out. al;so building new hotels next door -what beach is there for them as i can see the beach getting very full just like further down.
“Simply Amazing ”
Everything about this place is simply amazing: - all of the team members - very friendly - breakfast, - rooms with balconies - choice of restaurants (Steak house, Italian, Mexican, Chinese) - included daily and evening sport activities (from yoga, through archery, carabiniers, salsa etc) - selection of included water sports - swimming pools, bars etc. The most impressive - enthusiasm and friendliness of the entertainment team. Those guys speak at least 4 different languages!!! Beach party during your stay is a must! Take a part in at least one daily activity - you can win a certificate announced in the evening You simply are never bored - even if you travel on your own - look at the activities program. It's all full inclusive and resort within itself - not much around outside the place but why would you have to leave - you have everything there. Best to take at least a day trip to old Havana - that's real Cuba for you! The only thing to be improved - cocktails / wine in the evening - a bit less water
“Fab tome ”
Went to Cuba to celebrate my partners 40 birthday. We had a beautiful bungalow close to the beach with a quirky bathroom. The staff at his hotel where very accommodating a special thank you to Francis lobby bar, she treated us like VIPs . The food was OK in the buffet restaurant , the Al a carte where good our favourites where the seafood and Chinese , we enjoyed lunch in the Mexican and always had a laugh with the staff and musicians. The weather and beach were gorgeous we preferred this to the pool area as it was too hot there. The bar service was good although the cocktails were mostly sweet the staff went all out to please us. The entertainment was mediocre but they tried to cater for all ages. We travelled off site a few times to Havana and would recommend a visit we went independently instead if a coach tour ( hired a classic American car with driver/ guide) so our tour was tailored to our needs. Will definitely return sometime in future.
“wow !!! ”
yes it was just great !! nice site great staf and the food better then the 10 other hotels i have visite before, as for the crowd ...many european france germany and brit not many canadien : ( hotel is consider as one of the best by the local the location is great 10 pesos from the must visite varadero strip bars resto a real safe place to be even at 3 am must see... bad side ... peoples not leaving tip to bar and waiters it broke my hart as for animation just enough not too much and not too less lol i just have nothing bad to say but go and see it
“Great Holiday - 5 out of 5 for Hotel and staff ”
Stayed at Sol Palmeras for 2 weeks in Late July. with two children 16 & 18 Got to be one of the best holiday experiences i have had. Hotel was really good, facilities inc Gym was excellent, All Staff were magnificent, from Beach hut to Catering. I would like to leave a special mention to the Entertaining staff inc Yenniy (Jenny) The Beach is a short walk from main hotel, and the white sands and clear blue water is breathtaking, & an ideal wedding venue too. Would highly recommend Hotel!
“Great holiday ”
Stayed here as a couple with two 20ish lads in September. The complex was clean and tidy and a short walk to the beach which was one of the best I have ever seen with clear and warm sea. Though the weather forecast before departing suggested there would be storms everyday we were pleasantly surprised as the storms occurred after 6pm most nights and by the next morning the sun was out. There were several bars serving mainly rum based drinks though the wine and beer was passable. We visited all five specialist restaraurants ,the fish, steakhouse and Chinese were superb but we found the Mexican and Italian food to be quite bland .we managed to visit the restaurants several times without restriction though the buffet restaurant had a very wide range of options far more than normally be found . The one down side of our visit which was low season was the humidity at night, the air conditioning in the main lounge seemed to struggle . We visited Havana on a 2 day trip via the rep. And this was great value though be prepared to be hassled for money. The boat trip we went on including the dolphin experience was excellent , free bar all day and eating at a deserted island. We could also recommend the mumba night close to the resort. Overall the holiday offered great value for a long haul destination and we would highly recommend the resort especially if you are planning to visit Havana which was around 2hour 40 minutes away.
“1st time there... won't be the last! ”
Its taken 3 weeks for me to write this review since I returned from this hotel and thats largely becuase I've had the 'holiday blues' since leaving! I visited the Sol Palmeras for th first time this September, I went with friends from England and Canada who have been back time and tme again and after just 24hrs of being there I could see why. The hotel its self is very well laid out, nothing is too far away and the breathtaking beach is literally on the doorstep. We stayed in the bungalows just behind the stage which are perfectly situated to have the best of both worlds, close to the entertainment, pool and beach yet far enough to not be disturbed by anyone walking home late at night. Rooms are perfectly clean and tidy which is all you need for how much time you spend in your room when theres so much to do on resort everyday. Beds are comfortable which is one of the two things i'm usually most interested in from a hotel... the other being the food. Of all the places i've travelled to this hotel has to be up there with one of the biggest choices of things to eat in the main All Inclusiv buffett, if you cant find something you like here at any one time theres something wrong with you! If it is you fancy a change on a couple of nights though make sure you book in at some of the a la cartes, in particular the Seafood restaurant (the steak on the surf and turf is mouthwatering) and the Chinese. Other than that theres snack bars for the usual eats around the pool. Drinks are good and generous in their measures and the bar staff at the Pool Bar are incredible, so friendly and always making sure you're topped up and happy, my particular favorate was a barman there called Roberto, each day he made sure my friends and I were happy and enjoying ourselves just like Manuel who's downstairs in the Fun Pub most nights, a genuinley lovely guy. If you have the pleaseure of meeting the lovely Jesus in the bar at night, make sure you try one of his cherry daiquiri's! Finally and saved until last for a reason... The Entertainments Team... who quite literally made the holdiay what it was. These guys are the best animacion team ive ever seen at any hotel ive been to. Every single day from 10am to past midnight they're contantly on the go making sure people are happy and having a good time. whether that be sitting and chatting at the bar to guests or playing games in and out of the pool/beach they literally dont stop. If you visit this hotel you'll know what I mean whe I say they're not only just staff by the time you leave, they're friends and the reason why so many people return year after year. All of them so entertaining for differnt reasons and a credit to the hotel. Special thanks to Raynier who heads up the guys and made the holiday extra special for us all in any way he could as well as his unbeliveable team particularly, Roni, Raul, Erick, Michael, Alberto, Yenis T, Yenis C, and Rolando. We will see you all again in May! :)
“Amazing family holiday!”
Went to this resort with my family last Christmas, and it was one of the best holidays of my life. Rooms: The rooms were as expected - clean with all the appropriate facilities. (Wardrobes, small desk/table (I needed to revise - what a downer!), bathroom with bath/shower and cleansing products provided.). The AC was very quiet which was essential as it was very hot in the evenings. Cleaning staff were friendly and did a good job. I myself, stayed in a single-story bungalow which was about 2 minutes walk from the main hotel complex and swimming pool. Food: Food standard was good and throughout the week that we spent there, we went to restaurants on site for three nights (other nights we went to the buffet). The serving staff were very friendly and providing you sit in a similar place [in the buffet] you get the same member of staff which is nice. Lunch is served in the restaurants surrounding the swimming pool and, if I remember correctly, in the buffet hall. Beach, Pool, Drinks & Shade: The beach is the nicest I have ever stepped foot on - it's a lovely white coral sand and the sea is the nicest I've ever been in! (over all I very nice beach...) It's calm waves are pleasant to drift around in and the water is as clear as drinking water. One day, we went out on a pedalo to about 100m from the shore and the ocean floor was still visible - and how beautiful it was. The pool was clean and warm from about 10 every morning. It is lit in the evening after dark, so is wonderful for a post-dinner swim. In one of the pools, (the one not surrounding the pool bar), there is a [water volleyball I believe] net which is put up in the afternoons. The drinks from the pool bar are wonderful. Rum punch or Piña Colada are specialties because of the rum culture. Open most of the day it is lovely to lounge by the pool in a lounging bed type thing, and watch to scarce wispy clouds float past drinking cocktails Just by the entrance from the main complex onto the beach, there is an area of shade under palms with hammocks. These were just perfect for sipping a rum punch while reading a book or having an afternoon siesta. I spent my time most days from about (1-3pm) because, for me, the sun was too hot. Activities and Entertainment: The activities were numerous. There was crazy golf (which wasn't appealing to me but for some it might be). On the beach, there was water sports rental (free) which included pedalo's, kayaks and, I believe, small sailing boats. For young children, there is also a club. The entertainment around the pool was good. It involved everyone from dancing to a knowledge quiz. Other Notes about Hotel: Absolutely everything is free apart from the WiFi (and shop) which is rather expensive but good enough to check in for flights online. All the staff were welcoming and helpful all the time. Off-Resort Activities: About 5 minute walk from the hotel there is a shopping mall with shops selling clothes, a convenience store and a Rum store. Be mindful of what the till attendant says you need to pay, because it might be much more expensive than the listed prices. This is because workers want to make personal profits off unsuspected tourists. If you have enough money to rent a taxi for the day to go into Havana, I would recommend it! I've heard visiting a cigar factory is fun. We tried to do so, but found out most cigar factories are closed to the public, for a few months, from December onward. So be careful. Visiting Old Havana was interesting and over the past decade, restoration work has been going on to take care of the old buildings, but despite that, many building are still looking sad and weary. A laugh was driving past the USA Embassy, which has dozens of huge US flags flying outside it. Another interesting site to visit in Havana in the Plaza de la Revolución in which you see Communist Revolutionaries (most notably Che Guevara). Over all, this was an amazing holiday with the family and I would definitely consider coming here again!
“So relaxing... ”
We've travelled to a lot of places, but this hotel made us switch off, relax, feel cared for and pampered more than any other we've been to. It's difficult to put into words, but the whole place has an atmosphere of being laid back. If you watch carefully, the staff are all working very hard, but there is no angst or hassle from them, and it all gets done. The beach was fabulous. We loved the multicultural mix. At one point I saw every racial group represented in one queue at the pool bar. My only complaint is about the greed of many folk - how sad as everyone is getting fatter and there is no need for it. Yes, unwind here, feel like you really are in a Caribbean idyll (OK, for the purists, it's on the Atlantic coast!) and enjoy yourself.
“Nice resort in varadero ”
I stayed 2 nights in this hotel. The food was ok the dessert was really good. The enetertainment staff was really good, they always got the crowd going. The service at the buffet was good, there was time that we had to go to them for utencils and for drinks and right away they send us back to our seats but this was because the hotel was in full capacity. They reserved us for the mexican restaurant. When we got thre they could not find our reservation. This issue was resolved when i went to the customer service office and the lady arranged for us to eat at the chinnese restaurant that evening, which was great. I stayed at a bungalow which was vey spacious. The hotel was located on a good part of varadero beach. The beach was never crowded.
“Dream Vacation ”
First amazing trip to Cuba, and it will not be our last! The way our trip was booked (using mainly points), my husband and I each had our own Standard Room. I emailed the resort ahead of our arrival, explaining that we clearly only need one room, so I asked if it would be possible to get an upgrade. Upon our arrival, Wilbur had our request on file and we were upgraded to a Junior Suite. Great room, great location! The only negative is the mattress is not very comfy, feels more like a futon than the mattresses we are used to in Canada. The air conditioning worked amazingly. Food: We were warned by so many people about the food in Cuba being terrible. This was not the case at Sol Palmeras! The buffet had many excellent choices and they mixed it up on many nights. One night there was sushi and my husband and I totally enjoyed them, great wasabi !! The staff is wonderful and service was excellent. The only thing I would of liked is to have coffee available at both lunch and dinner time and not just at breakfast. Though coffee is available 24 hours at the bar Cubitas and they make excellent cappucino there. We tended to sit in the same section at the buffet restaurant and on our last morning our usual waitress gave me a lovely key chain and thanked me. We always left a peso after out meals! She always made me a pretty flower made out of a napkin. She made this flower for all her female customers, and most were not tipping-her service to them was just as excellent. Due to so many people telling us that we would have stomach issues with the food, we packed Pepto and Tums and Immodium, and we never had to use any of these. I really cannot understand why people complain about the food, I was hoping to lose weight on this vacation, but no, food was too good and plentiful. Pool: Our room on the third floor faced the pool and to the left was the ocean. We are early risers, 6:00 am almost every day and I can tell you that EVERYDAY there was someone in the pool early morning vacuming it and cleaning it. So do not believe the reviews that say that it is never cleaned!! Yes, by the end of the day, there are bugs and sand, etc. in the pool....this is normal, people and always going from the ocean to the pool and even though most wash off the sand at the outdoor shower stations, there is some that remains on you and gets into the pool. We loved the ice cream bar by the pool and enjoyed quite a few cones during our stay. Beach: The best thing about this resort is the wonderful beach. I have never seen such clear water in all my lfe. No matter how far out you go, with the paddle boats, kayaks, catamaran...you can see the bottom, no matter how deep...oh so clear and perfect. We were not there in high season, so finding a chair was always easy. Entertainment staff at the beach also do a great job of getting people up and participating in their fun activities, where on many games the winner got a bottle of rum. Staff: I cannot begin to praise the staff enough. From the customer service we got from Wilbur before we even arrived to everyone we encountered. At the upstairs bar "Cubitas", Francie, Carlos, Robertico and Estaban really made our stay amazing. All the staff were great, just these particular ones stood out and always greeted us with a smile and our drinks. Yes, we did tip a peso or two for each few drinks...why not, they gave great service either way, we just got faster service and a few free cigars and more alcohol in the drinks (I am certain). Why not tip someone for providing great service! A la Carte Restaurants: We tried 3 out of the 4. Mexican, Italian and Chinese. Best by far was the Chinese. Excellent food, excellent service-but a little out of the way. Mexican was good, have the fajitas if you go-they were great, much better than my husband's taquitos. We also ate at the Mexican restaurant at lunch time, something different than buffet or snack bar. Overall I would highly recommend this hotel/resort. They staff are constantly cleaning and tidying up and it shows. It is some guests who are inconsiderate and make unnecessary messes. There is a tractor train that leaves every thirty minutes and takes you to the small shopping center next door. Little supermarket there which is a great place to pick up a few snacks. Do not take the train back, take a walk along the beach back to Sol Palmeras-about 15/20 minute walk and very worth it. Beautiful overhang cliff that you can stand on and take some beautiful pictures of the sunset. Thanks Sol Polmeras for making our first trip to Cuba a real DREAM VACATION!! See you again :)
“My homeaway from home! ”
To be honest, I've lost count on how many times I've been here, but it's averaged 2-3 times per year since June 2009.. This time around I met my 4 friends from England at the hotel, and we all stayed in the bungalows just behind the outside stage. This is our favorite spot! Close to everything, but not a lot of traffic walking by.. Thank you Raynier for always arranging us to have rooms close next to each other, especially since we travel from different countries! There has been many updates to the hotel, new gym, new clubhouse, and when I was just there during the first 2 weeks of September, they were updating on of the bars in the lobby.. I've noticed with each of my last few visits, there has been much improvement in the food, but the quality this time was amazing! And so many more choices! Thee service throughout the hotel was excellent.. Thank you to Yunis at reception for always having a smile on his face whenever we passed by! When you visit, make sure you stop by the pool bar, where our favorite barmen work, Jaime, Rudolfo, and of course Roberto.. The drinks were always so delicious... Every night there is always some entertainment, either outside on the stage, or inside the salon TropiCuba.. At which time you must see Jeses and ask him to make you one of the best daiquiris you'll have in Cuba :) Also make sure to stop and see Maylin in the lobby bar, always so pleasant and friendly! You will love her... After the show, be sure to stop down to the fun pub, and dance to some music, and Manuel will make you some great drinks too! So friendly, and always smiling :) All of the a la carte restaurants are an absolute must try if you can get reservations (again, thank you Wiro) but our favorite is definately the chinese.. Go on an empty stomach because there is sooo much food to choose from! I read an earlier review and they complained that there is no food served on the resort after 3pm.. These guests must be misinformed because the bar down on the beach serves fries, sandwiches, hot dogs and burgers until 6pm :) The but certainly not least, the entertainment team is absolutely amazing! They have become like family to us, and one of the main reasons we have continued to come back, year after year (sometimes twice!) They make such an effort to make sure everyone has a good time, and gruelling try to get to know as mane guests as they can.. So once again, thank you to Levys, Raul, Roni, Mike, Alberto, Yenis C, Yenis T, Isa, Rolando (love seeing him dressed up in costume! I'm sure he was dying of heat every time too ha,) Erick (who also does a great dolphin impersonation lol) and of course, Raynier, who always always make sure everything is in order, and they all make us feel so welcome, like family :) See you all soon! Xo
“The best ”
Sol Palmeras it's a good and the best resort in varadero, friendly people, the have the best beaches, good tipical and international food, clean rooms, good night shows and live bands. I full recommend. Thank you.
Sol Palmeras is one of the most outstanding hotels in the World-famous Varadero beach, thanks to its privileged location overlooking the sea on the best strip of the fine white sand beach, surrounded by tropical gardens and thousands of palm tress that honor its name. It is an ideal spot for families and honeymooners. 21.7 miles away from Varadero's international airport.
