      Varadero Airport

Juan Gualberto Gomez Airport was built in 1989 and inaugurated by Fidel Castro,[3] thus replacing the old Varadero airport located in Santa Marta, currently known as Kawama Airport. The airport was named after a journalist, fighter for the Cuban Independence and black rights activist in Cuba Juan Gualberto Gómez (1854–1933). The terminal building has shops for tourists (including rum, cigars, T-shirts, books, carvings, pharmaceuticals), a large departures lounge cafeterias and a VIP lounge. A VIP card is available by paying $30/person to the local tour company representative. This allows the departing passenger to bypass the queues for check-in, have an agent take your departure tax to the correct official for you, and bypass any lines for passport control. The passenger is then taken to the VIP lounge which provides free food and drink (including alcoholic beverages).[4] The ground handling equipment is imported mainly from North America. There are four jet bridges, but air stairs are used for the remaining aircraft parking spaces on the apron by the terminal. Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport (IATA: VRA, ICAO: MUVR), formerly known as Varadero Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto de Varadero), is an international airport serving Varadero, Cuba and the province of Matanzas. The airport is located closer to the city of Matanzas than to Varadero. The closest airport to Varadero is Kawama Airport. In 2009, the airport handled 1.28 million passengers,[2] making it the second busiest airport in Cuba after José Martí International Airport in Havana.

“Don't be honest at this resort ”
came to this resort with 9 friends the beginning of October for my 50th birthday, first night we accidentally broke the tv so like honest Canadians we reported so we could make a minds and pay for it.wow what a mistake that was, we were handed a $1100 bill for the tv and all 9 of were booted out, sunwing sure wasn't much help,we ended up going to breezes Costa Bella and had to pay for our stay there.ive been comeing to cuba for 7 years now and I have never been treated so wrong.that being said what I did see of the resort was awesome especially the beach but what meals I did have there sucked.the food at breezes was way better with lobster being served almost every night.if you come here and you brake something LIE and same it was like that when you arrived.also 300 dollars went missing out of the room after maid cleaned it

        “Homeless panhandler like staff ”
My spouse and I booked in for a 3 day get away and from the start it was horrible. We discovered that if we wanted room service or the use of the hot tub and adult?s only area we would have to pay an extra 20 CUC per day for these features. When I approached the front desk for clarification, everyone claimed to not understand what I was saying and pass me off to another person who would ignore me for several minutes pretending to be busy organizing papers or moving the mouse across the computer and then finally just shrug or shake their head and continue clicking on the computer. The room was filthy. I was shocked when we walked in, holes in the walls, broken window blinds, dirty floor and an unflushed toilet. This is not exactly what I had grown to expect from a RIU resort regardless of the country. The maids did little more then make the bed. Regardless of tipping them well, towels where left wet, sandy and hung up ready for reuse. Our sheets had not been changed, the bed was like sleeping on concrete and my back is still sore. The room fridge was not stocked as was the mini bar in our room and we would have to go to the bar to ask for water on the last day they replaced our toilet paper. The staff members are just plain lazy and greedy. We had tipped resort staff 260 CUC in the three days we stayed. The first day of our stay we asked the guard at the gate about a cab he hailed one down for us and then leaned into the window glaring at us waiting for a tip. It was very intimidating and made both my spouse and I extremely uncomfortable, however we assumed it was his personality. The second and third day of our stay we realized this was the staff mentality. We had one case where it was raining so we sat down for a glass of wine to wait for it to subside. The waiter took 15 minutes to finish his conversation with another staff member before coming over to us, and then actually had the nerve to chase us out the doors and put his hand out and request his tip. I was not expecting a fantastic meal however I was expecting food to be cooked and available. If I asked for a coffee and it was not breakfast I was told to go into the main lobby bar. The a la carts which we booked at 6:00 pm seemed to be disorganized, rushed and out of stock most of the time. Asking for wine we were told it was an extra fee. I had a situation where the server literally took my unfinished plate and walked away leaving me just staring after her. In the buffet section most meat products were served raw or burned. The one meal I found a piece of meat with the entire hid left on it just cooked and smothered in sauce! Our room was on the ground floor. The day we packed we noticed that my spouse?s ipod, packaged socks, boxers, one pair of swim trunks, my dress sandals, my hair products, bath and body works products and a few shirts from both of us where missing. Only ourselves and hotel staff had access to our room. When we went to front desk, no one ?understood? what I was saying about the missing products and they stayed in Cuba. The entire trip the only people who had any form of customer service seemed to be the lifeguards telling us we could not swim in the ocean as it was too windy and dangerous. They were polite and apologetic about the weather and lack of sun ? it rained every single day, all day so we did not get any actual sun which is no ones fault but the weather. Overall the Riu Varadero, Cuba was a waste of time, money and the worst part excitement. This was our first trip together and the staff at the facility literally ruined everything with bad attitudes, poor service and acting like homeless panhandlers taking advantage at every opportunity. That was mixed with a filthy and broken facility and I can say that disappointment is not even the right word for this facility.

        “Never again!! ”
We have visited Cuba 4 times before and the Riu is far most the worst. From finding not one , not two , not three but over four cockroaches in the deluxe suite in building 34. Yes it is a tropical country, but really a family of roaches were living in our couch!!! The maids just picked them up with their hands!!!! 7 restaurants but only 2 are open every night so good luck getting a reservation. Food was ridiculous not that we did not expect the food to be "different" as I said we have been to Cuba and our last time we visited memories varadero which was 100 times better!!! Anyway food was terrible. The only good thing wAs being in building 20 cuz the pool was right in front. People were not as warm or nice. Would I go back? ..... Never .....terrible resort and I can not believe sunwing offers this resort!!!!

“RIU.com - do not book with them ”
I booked and paid for one week at the RIU Varadero through RIU.com. Upon arrival at the RIU Varadero on Sunday Aug 17th, we were very unsatisfied with the resort condition and room. The room was dirty (mattresses, bathroom) the beds uncomfortable, and there was no light outside the rooms in the corridors of the hotel. The staff attempted to find light bulbs but could not find any to fix the problem. The food in the buffet was ill prepared and caused us sickness in only one night. The following day we felt compelled to leave the hotel because of the poor conditions and service. I explained the reason to the front desk staff who confirmed that they would allow us to change the reservation and refund the remaining balance and that they had e-mailed RIU.com to that effect. I was provided with a confirmation of the check out. Upon arrival back home I contacted RIU to ensure the refund had been processed. The phone attendant refused and told me I had to go back to the hotel in Cuba to get my refund. He put me to his manager who asked me to submit an email to their customer service email account. I have received several form letter confirmation emails that they received my request, but they have not processed a refund nor even contacted me after two months. I would not book through RIU.com ever again. And the hotel was disgusting. Thankfully the Iberostar next door was far better.

“Would not go here again or recommend it to anyone better place .”
Went with daughter and friend. Staff unfriendly. Two staff excellent Carlos at Bar and Adreine at buffet in the morning. Bed was awful, food disgusting and cold need to make better drinks.,cappuccinos awful. Beach needs to be cleaned when all the stuff comes in from the ocean. Staff needs to be friendlier. When at the bar waited 20 mins for a drink. We made the best out of a ten day trip, my daughters first time hated it and this is my 4 time to Cuba bad friend 5. We recommend this place. If people that are traveling think there better than someone else your not stay home we all like going away and to be treated properly. We tipped well has nothing to do with tipping, and most people that thought that they were better and should be served first didn't tip at all. Oh yes when elderly people come for help all cut up you get someone to take them for help have nurse on duty don't just tell them were to go and send them off. That was disgusting. Says you get free wifi.

        “Nightmare come true! ”
Just returned from Varadero yesterday and felt compelled to share my experience about the Riu Varadero with everyone. I was super excited to go there, my first 5 star adventure in Varadero. Previously I had only stayed at 2.5 star in Varadero. Let's just say there's no difference. Upon check in, I was taken to my room and by the Bell hop who harassed me for a tip before I was even through the front door of my room. Not a big deal, brushes it off. The room: bed was hard as a rock, have never slept on something so hard in all my life, and I'm in my 20s. It was like a cement slab! Patio door had no lock on it, come on in! Towels were replaced everyday with new towels that had even blood or fecal stains on them. They are not bleached. Bathroom was dirty, build up on the facets and tile. Noise, every night, all night long. The buffet: awful. Breakfast was the only decent meal. Plates and cups were dirty, you could the residue on both. Snack bar supposedly serves food 24/7. Book an excursion that left at 06:20, buffet not open so I went to the snack bar like the room info guide suggests for breakfast. They had no food, just coffee. Complained at front desk and had them chatter away in Spanish as I was standing there then walk away. I asked to speak to manager and was ignored. I asked for a comment card and was ignored. Returned later that evening. Since I had to check out earlier that day for my night flight, was told I could rent a room for 10 cuc an hr to shower and sleep. This process took almost an hr to get a room because the credit card machine was "down". Was asked atleast 5 times for cash and told them no. I finally said to them that I thought they were scamming me and going to pocket my cash and all of a sudden my card was approved, magic! The room was filthy, dead cockroach at the door, dirt on the floors and mold on the wood where the liqourstore dispenser is. Pretty gross for 40 cuc for 4 hrs. Given the chance I would stay at Mar del sur, the 2.5 star I stayed at before over the Riu, even at the same price. I read a lot of these reviews and think people are overreacting a lot of the time but this place is absolutely horrible. You've been warned!

        “Not a 5 star hotel”
After being at the Riu Macao (Nov 2013) and Palace Bavaro (Feb 2014) in Punta Cana, I was expecting a simular type hotel. The room we had was very standard and not very clean upon our arrival....lights burnt, walls, doors and windows dirty. I am not one to complain about the places we have been to but this one caught me by surprise....it is not a 5 star. The staff are very friendly and polite always with a smile. As for the food, the buffet is not the best but OK.....it is what I expected as we have been to Varadero twice and know the food is not the best. However, the restaurants are good. Had two days of rain so it would have been nice to have the WiFi all day in our room as it is only available in the lobby area. We only had one hour per day included with the room. If you wanted more, you had to pay at 4.50 CUC hourly. Must be a Cubain thing because in Punta Cana it's included all day everywhere on the resort....even in our room. In short, this place is Ok for the price I paid.

“Nice holiday... but many things could improve!! ”
We returned yesterday from our holiday in Riu Varadero. Our expectations weren't too high as we had already read some comments on trip advisor. However, we got a great last minute deal and sometimes comments really depend on each person's individual life experience, so we decided to go for it. Check-in was quick (which was good, because we arrived around midnight and were very tired). Apparently we were upgraded to the adults only part of the resort - the deluxe area - but weren't told about it at check-in. Obviously the free upgrade was great, but we had to find out on our own that this gave us exclusive access to a reserved beach area and that we could have breakfast, lunch and dinner in the International restaurant instead of going to the main buffet area. The room size positively surprised us and it was very clean as well, but the bathroom could be better. It's was a strange combination with trying to be modern (window from the bathroom looking into the bedroom) and the old doors, some holes in the wall corners and humidity in the walls. Actually, every time we took a shower the bathroom floor would get wet and we didn't even try the bath because we suspected that the water would go through the window into the bedroom. Anyway, our maid did big efforts to keep us happy and we were. We actually brought some presents from home to give her each day and she really appreciated them. And every morning she would have a nice talk with us and smile!! Our first meal was at the snack-bar next to the main pool, the only one open after midnight. Simple snacks like hamburgers, hot dogs, club sandwiches. We would be happy with these simple snacks if they came with everything that they should come with. We actually quickly understood that the same snack never comes the same twice, as it depends on the ingredients they have available at the time. Now this can be acceptable for a hot dog or a simple hamburger as long as it comes with the meat, but a club sandwich made out of pickles and ham is not a club sandwich and doesn't taste good either. We'd rather have them telling us something was not available than spoiling food on something we won't eat. Breakfast was OK in the big buffet restaurant, but we were extremely happy to find out we could have breakfast in our deluxe area were the buffet was smaller, but everything looked much better and we could order our eggs and pancakes directly from the kitchen without having to wait in lines. Lunch and dinner in the big buffet restaurant were extremely disappointing. Plenty of choice, but nothing that tasted good. We tried so many different things to find something that tasted like it should, but it was hard. The grilled meat was nice, but we always had to wait in line to get it. And I found out that we could be a little creative and make a nice salad for ourselves - but creative is the word because there were no onions, no lettuce, the tomato had no taste, etc. We were able to try 3 theme restaurants. We loved the Criollo. All the starters were nice, specially the soup. We were a group of 4, so we could order one of each to taste everything. For the main course we could choose a degustation of all 4 main courses and that's what we did. We really liked it all. We also tried the Gourmet. Again, the soup was good but the shrimp salad had one shrimp!!!!! The main courses were nice, but not fantastic. For dessert we thought we were finally having something we liked, a chocolate fondant, but they ran out of it just before we ordered. The most disappointing thing here was the rude lady at the door. We didn't see one smile from her and she even tried to push us to order quicker, eat quicker and make us leave sooner. If you're having your dinner and the light goes off and on again, it's because she wants you to leave. It happened not only to us, but to more people we spoke with. We ended our holidays with a dinner in the Ging Seng. This was actually OK as well, specially because of the service. A nice and funny lady who really deserved the tip we left for her. We tried the International restaurant in the deluxe area for lunch and dinner as well. Much better than the buffet restaurant, but still not too exciting in terms of options and taste. The beach restaurant was the one where we were able to find some food tasting good in the buffet. But if you eat here, ignore the flies on the food. And don't eat the salads once the sun is shining on that buffet corner. The beach is great!! The sun beds could have cushions or be like the ones around the pools, but if they become too hard after you're sitting on them for a while, you can always put your towel on the sand. We were able to change towels every day. I think that the entertainment could improve as I've seen better in other all inclusive resorts. The shows in the evening aren't spectacular but we did enjoy the Michael Jackson show. The Cuban show, for which we had great expectations as we were in CUBA, could be much better. The drink options are good, with a good variety on offer. There was not one coffee that I enjoyed drinking but then again I'm used to good coffee at home. Our favourite bar ended up being the lobby bar due to good service and presentation of the drinks. What we liked most: the weather!!!!!!!! What we liked less... the dirty bathrooms in all public areas with toilet paper never hanging on the wall but lying on the floor on or the bin. And some bathrooms smelled awful. Not what you expect in a 5 star. Overall, we had a nice holiday but don't think this hotel should have all 5 stars. 4 would be enough and still they should improve a lot to be able to keep the 4th star.

“Great beach but disappointed with the food and drinks ”
Overall we enjoyed our stay but were disappointed with the food and drinks. This is not a true 5 star resort. Beach - Great beach - Beautiful white sand and aqua blue water. Resort - It is a very large resort that is long. We were given a room in a building near to the beach which we preferred. There are multiple buildings at the resort that are 3 stories high, very few have ocean views. No elevators. Maid service was fine. You are given beach towels and white towels for showering. Only once did we were able to get new towels during our stay since they are always short of towels when we were there. The beds are hard. At this resort, there are singles, couples and families. Staff - Friendly staff. The gardeners might give you flower for your hair. Money - We cashed some money at the airport just outside the terminal. The hotel rate was not as good. Becareful when cashing money at the hotel because we almost got ripped off since the cashier initially did not give us our correct amount back. Pools - One really large activity pool and another large regular pool. Tip - As soon as you can, place your reservations for supper at the a la carte restaurants. If you are staying for one week, you get to eat at two during your stay. Some people did not get to eat there because it was all booked up. We ate at the Seafood and Italian restaurants. Activities - They have a variety of activities such as water aerobics, volleyball, dance lessons, games, sexy dancing contest etc. You can also use paddle boats, kayaks and they will take you out on small sail boats. They also have tennis courts and indoor gym. Music and Shows -They have live music in the evenings at: buffet restaurant, an outside area and a piano player at the lobby bar. They also have an evening show every night. We saw Grease, Michael Jackson and International Shows. They were pretty good. Drinks - These tend to be inconsistent depending on who makes it. The best bar is the lobby bar. The worst bar is the beach bar. Food - Food is also inconsistent. Sometimes it is good, sometimes not. We ate at the large buffet for breakfast and some suppers. For lunch, we mostly ate at the beach grill. There is a 24 hour snack bar but becareful of this one since the local birds also eat from this buffet. Bugs - In the evening in May, the bugs come out and you do not even know you get bitten. Recommend wearing bug spray at night on your legs. Water - Do not drink the water. They give you one large bottle of water per day in your room. Package holiday ? At our resort, some people had booked 7 nights and some had 8 nights. Look at your ticket. If you have 8 nights then you do not have to check out until right before your leave. If you have 7 nights then you must check out in the morning.

“Extra clean rooms, comfortable bed, great staff. Well worth the price. We got a free upgrade to adult only section! ”
Arrived late September. Free upgrade to adult only section was a bonus! Nice quiet rooms, super close to the beach and our own quiet pool. Rooms are very clean and the beds seemed hard but slept great every night. People complain that it looks a bit "tired" or that it's run down. It's really ok. I've seen the same in a lot of resorts. Let's face it, you didn't pay lots of money to stay! Food is not always good but there's plenty of choices. The restaurant in adult only is not great for dinner but a good breakfast a la carte if you want bacon and eggs. The buffet is best since you can pick and choose - or you can do a restaurant and then the buffet if you need to. Really, you are not going to starve. Drinks are inconsistent from one bar to the next and cappuccinos seem to be hit and miss. Again, we paid $700 for a week in the sun. You can't beat that. We had to fly out of Montreal and our hotel and parking was $175! People have to be realistic and relate their experiences to the price they pay for a vacation! Overall, we really loved it and thought it was great value for our money. Spent most of the time on the beach. If you are there around 10am, no issues for chairs. Pool chairs were always available. The people are great. Met some really wonderful people! And some were grumpy! Just like service in Canada. :) We went to Varadero using the double decker bus - a great deal but it was a little too hot without a/c. Did a bit of shopping and came back in a convertible. Lots of fun. Not sure I would do it again in 40 degree weather! We felt very safe in Varadero and were not harassed at all -well, just the cabs looking for a fare! Had a great meal in an outdoor restaurant and paid 22 cucs. Great deal.

        “Lovely to look at! ”
Third trip to Veradero, eighth to Cuba! I travelled last April to Riu with 5 friends. We arrived during a very busy week with many university age travellers celebrating the end of the school year.. so that pretty well wrote off the pool for the better part of the day. Very raucous, drunk and obnoxious kids enjoying their time but not great for others just looking for a swim. This is not a fault of the resort, and the facilities, but important to note that this resort is a party central location destination. I visited the beautiful Iberostar just down the beach and a completely different group at the pool and on the beach. The rooms are comfortable, pillows are lovely which is not something I am used to in Cuba. I had my own room this time and always felt safe. If you are not interested in doing alot of walking then this is not the resort for you... it was designed with a lot land between buildings and lobby. I am not sure the VIP adult section would appeal to me more than the general section.. but for many they claim they preferred the close proximity to beach and private dining area. The lobby is very hot, there seems to be very little air circulation in that area. Each night there was a raucous sing along in the very small and hot piano bar area.. that was fun. I don't do shows, but my friends enjoyed those that they attended. I noticed The pool is absolutely beautiful and I enjoyed it early in the morning only when it was calm and quiet. I am not a pool lover when in Cuba I want the ocean and a lovely beach. Food, always the same, a good selection but each day whether you were at the beach restaurant or buffett the food was the same lunch and dinner... Cuban food can be a challenge at times but this one I would suggest is on the lower end with little variety. Beach was lovely and with little solicitation which was nice... I arrived each morning very early and stayed on the beach until almost sunset.. the ocean seemed to have a pattern, very calm until 2pm then the waves would strengthen.. I personally loved it. Staff were ok, not the friendliest I have encountered, I got tired of waiting for the first two days for drinks during my meals so I heavily tipped one very nice waitress and my table was was then waiting for me with my fav drinks each meal after that. Overall Veradaro for me is still touristy, with good beaches and little else.. unless you do some travelling and visit beautiful historic Havana. My favourite location in Cuba remains the Holquin region where you really experience Cuban culture in a quieter less travelled area. Overall not a bad resort but I know there are better choices while visiting the lovely beaches of Veradero.

        “Really Liked the Riu!”
Traveled with my husband from November 10 to 16. We are well traveled I guess and have both been to Cuba several times (but first time in Varadero), I was a bit worried as I do normally pay a lot of attention to reviews on here and the Riu seems to get very mixed opinions. I chose it for us because it offered a lot of the amenities we like and also seemed to be a more active/fun resort compared to others in Varadero. Went with that and hoped for the best...really there was nothing to worry about. Arrived early and room was available (awesome!) We were in building 22 which is close to the main pool and fairly close to the beach, lobby, main buffet etc. This resort is HUGE so be prepared to walk. The room was fine..it was clean, the AC worked well, the shower had lots of hot water/pressure, good number of pillows and TV had a surprising number of English channels. As others have mentioned the beds are hard and overall the rooms could use a bit of refreshing. One weird thing...the shower is kind of a challenge to get in and out of. It's a soaker tub, kind of built up on a platform with a large ledge around it. You have to CLIMB in and out. This didn't bother us but I couldn't help but think it would be difficult for someone older/with mobility issues. Maybe all the rooms aren't like that though? The other think about the rooms (sort of),,,the towels. They are white...and while we knew they were technically clean...the often had stains/marks on them. Maybe they don't have bleach in Cuba? Definitely not 5 star towels! The grounds are very nice, lots of walking as I said and very nicely maintained. The pools...we really only swam/sat by the main one. We went to the second pool once but it was very quiet (might be different when the resort is busier). The main pool was a lot of fun, lots of activities and areas for people of all ages/interests. The swim up bar was busy every afternoon. The beach is gorgeous. It was windy at the beach several days so we didn't stay down there as much as we planned (plus we were having too much fun at the pool!) It is narrow and can feel a bit crowded at times. The main thing people complain about in Cuba...the food. I have to say the food here was a LOT better than we expected. I really can't complain about the food at all. Sure they aren't huge on the spices but there was lots of variety, lots of options...definitely never left hungry. They seemed to take safety very seriously, we saw people checking temperatures often. We mostly ate at the buffet but also tried the Cuban/Creole a la carte, the snack bar, the beach grill area for lunch. The drinks...if you want to look back on my other reviews...I wish resorts stopped using pre-mixed slush So sugary and it makes all drinks taste the same. That said...the bars were good overall, The quality seemed to vary bar to bar (the beach bar was the worst, the pool bar was good, the lobby bar best). It was amazing to have champagne as an option at the lobby bar! And the coffee was amazing. The staff are, for the most part, extremely sweet and helpful. A few hi-lights...the bartenders at the pool, the people in the buffet at breakfast and lunch especially, the egg guy at breakfast...all so friendly and warm, always remembered us. Our maid actually stopped me the day before we left to say how nice it had been meeting us. Very genuine people, they made us feel welcome. The only real issue I had was one afternoon in the snack bar. I can only assume it happened because I was there on my own (because they were always very nice when in there with my husband and others...though I'm not sure why that would be the case?) I won't bother with details but they were extremely rude and it did bother me. We reported this to customer service and they took our room number, we assumed there would be some follow up from them but there wasn't. It would have been nice to receive a response. That said, everyone else was awesome....can't let one bad thing ruin a trip so not going to dwell on it We arranged a tour of Havana through the concierge at the hotel and she found a great driver/guide for us. Made things very easy which was appreciated! We also had a couples massage in the spa which was great, definitely recommend! The spa in very nice but one suggestion would be...the "hot tub" is actually cold...it would be nice to have an actual HOT tub after a massage. We didn't go to any of the evening shows. Enjoyed the entertainment in the lobby bar at night. One thing I would like to suggest though...it can sometimes get almost overwhelmingly loud because there are so many competing sounds (piano, bands, the show, coffee grinders, blenders etc.) all going at the same time in a large/echo-y space. I think it might be better if they cut down on the competing noises a bit...let people enjoy one thing at a time! To wrap up this very long review....really liked this resort and would have no issues recommending it to others, I would definitely consider returning as well! If anyone has any questions, feel free to message me.

This was my 14th visit to Cuba and my 11th to Varadero. Went Nov 8-15 and accompanied by friends and family...13 people in total. The resort was fairly busy however we had no trouble finding lounge chairs at the beach or the pool. The room was clean, very comfortable and the grounds were very well maintained. We received great service at the buffet restaurant from Leides and Andrienne....always had our table ready and always made sure we had what we needed. The main lobby bar and pool bar were great. On a side note, the main lobby bar can get very loud after the shows with the piano playing, live singers in the lobby, people at bar and the coffee machine constantly pumping out coffee. The food selection pleased everyone and no complaints. The Gourment and Seafood a la carte restaurants were very good, the Italian not so good...maybe because I'm Italian and I tried not to compare with my mom's cooking but it was difficult. Overall a great resort and a good choice. Thx Lou

        “RIU Varadero Nov. 2014 ”
This is a very nice place to stay. The staff are so awesome and appreciate you coming to the resort. I can't say enough about how pleasant and friendly they are whether you tip or not. The beach is lovely and you can walk quite a ways. You can take a bus into Varadero for $5.00 and you can hop on and hop off for the whole day. The food at the resort is OK and there are a lot of choices, but the buffet trays do not stay hot unless they just put it there, so I was not impressed with the luke warm food. The foods that they cook fresh is the best choice at the buffet. The snack bars are pretty good. The one by the beach has a BBQ every day. The one by the pool has birds flying in all the time which I did not like. The pool entertainment is enjoyable as well as the evening shows. There is usually a band that plays in the court yard every evening which is fun and a lot of people dancing. The lobby bar has really good drinks, and again the bar staff are awesome. If you need to see a Dr. at the resort it will cost you 25 cucs. You can't buy any aspirin or medications at the store there, so bring your own. Sun Wing will give you a card for an hour a day of internet. The high light of our trip was going to Havana. We went in a 55 Chevy Bel Aire on a private photo tour. The web site is www.ilovecuba.webs.com. I highly recommend it. You won't be sorry. The price compares to a bus tour but you see a lot more as you don't waste time getting on and off a bus all day long. Thanks to Yosel who gave us the most enjoyable day ever with wonderful professional photographs of us in Havana. We will book with him again when we go back as he has several photo tours to choose from. I will definitely go back to the RIU Varadero.

“Best Cuba hotel so far ”
This was my 7th trip to Cuba and the Riu is so far the best hotel I have experienced so far. Definitely more modern than other hotels that I have stayed at. Food is definitely on par with "Cuban" standards: lots of variety, very little seasoning. We stayed in the Deluxe section which had its own pool which was always quiet. There was also a liquor cabinet (1 vodka, 1 white rum, 1 dark rum and 1 whiskey) in the room. My father greatly approved of that. Rooms were very comfortable except for the firm bed (which is fairly typical in Cuba). The only downside I experienced was literally being eaten alive by no-see-ums, sand fleas, whatever you choose to call them. After taking sunset pictures at the beach for under 5 minutes I had +100 bites all over my legs. Thank goodness we only went to Cuba for the weekend as I didn't have to suffer for very long but I imagine it would have ruined my trip I stayed any longer. I read that they are only attracted to 10% of people and I guess I was just that lucky. I would recommend bringing bug spray with you and afterbite if you are fortunate enough to be in the 10%. But other than the bug incident, a lovely weekend away.

“Great Beach, Great Staff, Meh Food ”
I just got back from the RIU with my friend. We have a great time relaxing on the beach. The hotel was clean and well kept. I was impressed with how lovely the grounds were kept! The entertainment staff and evening shows were fabulous! They made great efforts to keep their guests entertained. The pools were phenomenal. I love the swim up bars! Bring your own water bottle or thermos so you can enjoy their fabulous concoctions in greater quantity. The food and bar service were also good. In the lobby, Sunwing guests had 1 hour of free internet each day. That was helpful to check in with home. The food itself however could use some seasoning. I should start by saying that I am not a picky eater. I do however enjoy flavourful foods. At the Riu, either there was too much salt or no salt at all! We enjoyed the snack bar by the main pool... that was our hidden gem. The pizza was always delicious, and so was the dessert at the buffet. The buffet had a variety of foods. The stations were best to visit. There are pasta, fish and meat stations. You knew for sure that the food was fresh and hot. As for the a la cartes, well....The Asian a la carte we went to was good. The Gourmet a la carte really needs some help. That night the salmon appetizer and soups were extra extra salty. The main meal.. well the steak was just so hard too cut! I could not eat it. The dessert was delicious however. Overall I would recommend this resort. The beach and staff were great. The resort was clean and well kept. Just keep in mind that the food isn't the greatest. Bring some BBQ sauce to spice things up.

This was our second trip to the Riu. Overall a nice quiet resort with great staff. All of the entertainment staff are top notch, Gretchen, Carlos, Noel, JC, Lester, Patrick and Coco are the best. The evening shows need updating as our second trip was no different from the first. One negative of the resort is the food, Buffett style but no seasoning so food is very bland but overall a large variety. You will want to bring your own condiments especially if visiting with kids. The rooms do need updating to be equivalent to a North American 5 star standard, but you are in. Cuba not there to be In a room. Beach access is good. The beach itself is does need grooming as it is full of shells almost to the waters edge.

        “Very nice place ”
Finally have time to write a quick review. Went here on October 19 for a week. I'll star by saying that the check in was quick, we got there at about noon and to our surprise the rooms were ready..... Place is beautiful. I had the superior room and it was a very nice and clean room, I was situated in building 20 which is between the beach and the lobby right in front of the main pool. The grounds are georgeous, they take very good care of the plants , trees and walkways. The beach , well as we all know beaches in Varadero are very nice. The people working there were very friendly , from the buffet to the different restautents. The services in the lobby , very easy access , from reserving the a la carte restaurants, to the free wifi, or simply getting information. Need to mention....the lobby is very big and clean , lots going on in there. The adult pool is a beautiful site , quiet area but beautiful, perfect to relax. As for the food......I'll have to say it is average, you will find something you like but it is really nothing to write home about. I do promise you that you will not starve. But the waiters and waitresses are totally friends and will all go the extra mile to help you. We also went to Havana for one day , in which I do recommend. As for the annimation crew, get to know them and participate, they will show you a great time. My favorite is Carlos, I called him Carlito.... Funny friendly and very nice character. I do not want to take anything any from the others but he was very friendly. The shows at the theater were very entertaining, but my favorite was Michel Jackson. Very very well done. My final thoughts.... You can not go wrong when staying at a Rui chain. They know how to treat you and they make sure you are well taken care of. Hope this review helps. Good luck which you choices , but remember only you can guarantee and good time on your vacation. Also never forget you are there not to complain but to rest, relax and enjoy the sun, all the rest are extras..... Enjoy you search and vacation :-)

        “our wedding ”
We had planned our wedding in Los Cabos in Oct. They had a terrible hurricane, so our wonderful travel agent, Melaina from BonVoyage Travel worked extremely hard to change our vacation and wedding plans last minute. We went to Cuba and stayed at Riu Varadero. All 25 of us had a marvelous time. That's not to say there weren't issues with the hotel. There were. I am writing this review only to rave about our wedding there. First of all, they upgraded us to the deluxe section and we got the bridal suite. It was lovely. Our wedding planner at the Riu, Yamaysi and Alexei, worked very hard for us. All the staff on the beach, Louis the bartender, Yamaysi who did our service, all the servers at the La Orchidea restaurant (they closed the restaurant for us for 2 hours) and the drivers of the golf carts who waited for us all, and the magnificent beach party DJ, and bartenders there were TERRIFIC!!!!! They all made our wedding perfect. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.

After staying at a riu hotel in Mexico that was rated the same as this one (with first choice!) ...I did expect more from this hotel! It was no where near in the same league, in terms of hotel decor, food or luxury! However for what we paid (£800 for 2wks all inc) it was good value for money. The room was nice and spacious. The restaurants were nice enough. Beach lovely and staff friendly. Lobby area is nice in the eve with live music and a good drinks bar. Pool needs a good clean... Lots of people were saying this in r stay! Could be maintained better in my opinion. Cuba was a nice place to c but the standard of hotels seems lower than other areas of the Caribbean I've been to so I wouldn't rush back! But if u want to relax in nice weather in an all inc hotel for a fairly budget price then this is a good holiday! We did the day trip to Havana to c the show in the evening and that was the highlight of my holiday! Great place to see

Spent last two weeks of October, 2014 with my wife at the Riu Varadero. This was my 5th trip to Cuba. The Riu is without question a valid 4 star all inclusive resort. We stayed in the adult only section and it was excellent. Thank you to Lucia, the adult section manager for accomodating our requests. No noisey main pool activities in this part of the resort. The food at the ala cartes and the buffet was excellent. The beach is beautiful. The weather lovely. We loved the piano bar in the main lobby and the entertainment found every nite outside the main building in the walkway court was lively caribbean music. The staff are all very friendly and acccomodating. Make sure to bring them your unwanted clothing items or other small gifts. They will appriciate it. We wife loved this resort. It will be difficult to settle for less.

“It was good for Cuba but not your typical RIU. ”
My husband and I recently stayed here Sept. 20-27 and were expecting the RIU to be like the other RIU's we have stayed at but we had to quickly remind ourselves that we were in Cuba, a place we absolutely love... It's not your typical RIU but you will find the great customer service as you will at any other RIU. There is some work that needs to be done in the deluxe section. I went to walk into the pool the first day we were there and my leg went through the plastic drain that surrounds the pool. I could have broken my leg. By the end of the week there were 3 other people we witnessed fall through the plastic drain. The food was ok but we knew going to Cuba not to expect the greatest food. Donello was awesome at helping us out with everything from arranging taxis, telling us awesome places to eat and also making sure we were completely accomodated the entire time we were there. Roxanne and Yalaina in the deluxe section were awesome bartenders. We never had to wait for anything. It was great to be greated by them everyday when we were going to the beach or pool. Magdiana was also always so polite in the evening when we would have drinks in the bar. We all called her Cuba Kim because she looked so much like Kim Kardashian, she thought it was funny as well. Also, last but not least Yamaysi was amazingly helpful with answering all of my questions because my mother and I will be returning for her birthday in January. She was great at helping me even with my Riu Class rewards. Thank you Riu for having such a wonderful staff.

“great stay at the riu ”
I visited this hotel oct6-14 2014 and have nothing to complain about. It was my first all Inclusive trip and first time in cuba. I loved it overall. Great trip for an amazing price and I would recommend it. First rooms, we got the superior room ( Free upgrade with sunwing). It was a good size room with a king bed. You control the temperature of your room, which was very convenient for us. There is a mini bar fridge that is filled with drinks and two big water bottles and also there are two full bottles of either rum or vodka in addition to the minibar which is nice to have. The bathroom was big and clean with good counter space for the ladies. However you will need a converter if you want to use your own hair appliances. Our view from the balcony was a quiet street(we stayed In building 22) but I enjoyed the view and we were not far from the main pool or the beach. As for the pools it was clean until later in the day when people let their cups float in the water from the bar, bUT I would usually pick them up, there wasn't many. There was entertainment by the pool everyday however last call was at 6pm which sucked. There was another pool passed the restaurants and disco which was suppose to have waterfalls coming from the caves but apparently a pipe burst and that feature wasn't working, we were told itd be operational in November but you could still swim in it. Overall loved the pools, it was beautiful , the water was at a good temperature and the bar was placed well in the pool. As for restaurants there were many a la cartes, however I only visited the Grillo one which served lobster and was good for the most part. I didn't pig out but I had dinner breakfast and lunch mostly at the snack bar or the buffet. I can say the food that I chose to eat was good and I had no complaints. Theres alot to choose from and there's a coupLe of grill sections where they cook the food in front of you at the buffet. The beach was beautiful just be careful of the tiny rocks right before you enter the water. The water is really salty and not too cold. There is also a beach bar not far from the water and theres always daily entertainment on the beach such as dancing or games. Also there are free paddle boats for those staying at the riu which was a nice to experience. Overall, do not listen to the negative reviews, I think those people have extremely high expectations and forget they are not in North America. It is a beabeautiful resort, there are , any options for food, the staff are friendly, there's always some sort of entertainment during the day and night and the pool and beach is amazing. For the price I paid, I was extremely satisfied. Definitely recommend it to you all.

        “Great Resort! ”
This resort is a great place to bring the family to. We were immediately greeted upon arrival. After staying in the deluxe section of the resort for two weeks, we are amazed at the level of service that each employee has given. This is the third consecutive year we've gone to this resort and the guests we meet are extremely satisfied as well. The beach is very crowded, but the music and atmosphere is astonishing. The discotheque is busy every single night, with people celebrating a superb vacation at Riu. I've brought my (adult) children here last year, and they recommend it to their friends. The staff always makes us happy no matter what! The only restaurant we seem to like however, was the international restaurant on the deluxe area. The italian, oriental and buffet restaurants didn't have the best waiters and the food was questionable. Nonetheless, I would still say this makes a great place for anyones honeymoon, anniversary, or simply bringing the family.

Do Not miss this midweek night. Better than any in Jamiaca or Mexico too. You simply don't find that at any buffet. Beautiful, modern grounds and vegetation and flowing rivers. WE will be back SOON!!! November 8th to 22nd family travel. ***** star treatment!!! Great evening shows, daily activities, excellent kid's club and service desk in lobby for excellent fast requests. Best I've seen!! excellent coffee bar at lobby. Great little touches like diet cola, sparking water etc. Beautiful modern rooms with great controllable a/c. Just ask how?? Hot,hot water soaking tubs and so much more. Great activity/lagoon pools. Come people what are you complaining about. Did you talk to customer service desk?? Are just too cheap and want too much??

        “Adults only section ”
we have stayed at the RIU several times and recommend the adult section. Don't go to Cuba if you are a picky eater and don't like seafood. You can have lobster almost every night at the international restaurant (adult section). The servers and bartenders are excellent, both at the pool bar and the cigar bar/lounge. Tips: bring bug spray, lots of sunscreen and after sun lotion.

“Go here!!!!!All you expect and more! ”
The more would be the STAFF! Great place...clean...friendly and entertaining. Staff were exceptional. From the room staff to the buffet staff. They made you feel welcome. Special mention to the gardeners that always had a morning greeting for us. The hotel itself was tastful and large!!!!! Only concern were the al la carte restaurants as they left a lot to be desired. Don't know if staff there were just fed up or the chefs were fed up, but these restaurants were disappointing. Buffet food was varied and plentiful with options to get what you really want from the grills. Even if you have food restrictions, you will find great options. We took our meals there after our disasters at the al la cartes. Beach....great ..pool ..clean and large. Great vacation!!!!

        “Great Stay!!! ”
I stayed at the Riu Varadero from October 30-November 7, 2014 in the Deluxe Junior Suite. Once we arrived we were whisked away to the Deluxe Section for check-in. Our driver was very friendly and waited with us while we checked-in, then without even being asked carried our bags to our third floor room and made sure we knew how to adjust the temperature in the room, and that we had everything we needed. The staff really made this trip amazing. The resort itself was very clean, and easy to navigate once you are able to take a walk during the day. There was a good selection of choices at the Buffet and I really enjoyed the a la carte restaurants. The food is different, you have to remember you are going to Cuba, but that doesn't mean its bad. If you go expecting to have food tasting like its from home, you will be disappointed, but you will not starve. My only complaint with the food was if you try to order room service at night, they will only offer you hot-dogs, hamburgers or a ham and cheese sandwich (they do not tell you this on the menu, only when you call). The room was very clean, and our air conditioner worked so well it was sometimes cold in the room. In the Deluxe Junior Suite there is a large window from the bathroom into the room from the separate bathtub. We found this a little odd, however was easy enough to get around by closing the shower curtain and use the shower stall instead of the tub and shower. The beach was clean, and there was no shortage of chairs while I was there. Of course depending on how messy other guests are, you may find some garbage on the beach, however the staff was really good about making sure to keep it clean. One tip, make sure you bring a power converter or adapter as they do use the European outlets.

I had an amazing time in Cuba and will be back every year! The Rui veradero is amazing! The entertainers are the best! Gretchel, Carlos, coco, Yosuan, Patrick, J.C, Lester, Jamie, Annette, and prob missing a few names there but I love them all! The bar staff, especially Lesandra, they rock!! This is my third time at this hotel and absolutely love it! The only thing I would do better is the food! U guys need Heinz ketchup, soya sauce and more condiments for dipping! Aside from the food I will be visiting every year!! The evening entertainment in the theatre needs to change as well! Being there 3 times I have seen them all... Need to add more action like the bike show and the pool side shows, they are amazing!! See u again next year!! ??????

“Staff here made me fall in love with Varadero all over agai ”
I never write review and I travel 2-3 times per year...so getting me to do this..means you are special!!!!!.. My husband and I have been to Cuba 5 times and this was our 3rd to Varadero...Cuba has given us some ups and downs..but we refused to give up...after this trip to Riu Varadero....we will be back again and again.....why?? the Staff at Riu Varadero plain and simple the best we have ever met so far.. Starting with our check-in..at 2330 suitcases and us where whisked away by Carlos Alberto..and in the 5 minute ride to our room we knew it all!!! who needed a map..he pointed out everything on the way. Then came the staff at the buffet (way to many to name) all greeting you with smiles...making sure you had continuous water we never had an empty glass. Coffee, wine, beer you name it we never had to look for it. Now for the Lobby bar...AMAZING...the staff at this bar is truly what every bar should model themselves after...friendly, entertaining...after day one..Never did we order a drink again..they just appeared on the bar in front of us...bar staff was continually cleaning..laughing...trying to speak English/French...going out of thier way to make sure you were welcomed when you arrived with high fives, handshakes and fist bumps..truly a great experience.. with that said LISANDRA,ALBERTO,LUIS,ANNALAY AND LALO...thank you for a wonderful week we will be back and I can't wait...been home for 2 days and already wanting to come back soon... Dawn

        “Well worth it!! ”
Just got back from a very nice stay at the Riu. We have been to Cuba many times, and have tried out all sorts of different places. We know not to expect Tbone steaks, etc and have come to understand Cuba is Cuba. Having said that, we were very pleased with this resort. We find it very hard to imagine that someone cannot find lots to eat here. The buffet offers a very wide variety of different foods that should pretty much appeal to anyone. There are 2 different grills that serve up seafood on one, with fish, mussels, tuna, etc and the other you can choose from beef, chicken, and pork. There is a pizza station, and a pasta station aside from all the various choices in the buffet. Lots of desserts to choose from as well. We had lunch at the snack bar a few times and again, lots of various things to choose from. We did not try any of the a la carte places as we enjoyed the buffet well enough. We do not normally go to any of the shows but we did go to the Michael Jackson show....don't miss it!!!! This guy is very very good. The hotel is very large and is always going to be in need of maintenance in one way or another. There is no shortage of maintenance staff, gardeners etc, You see them all the time out working at keeping the place looking awesome. The staff at the buffet and at the bars is excellent and more importantly there is enough of them to look after everyone very well. A lot of resorts do not enough staff to take care of everyone, but here that is not the case. Service here is A1! We did the Jeep tour and recommend it. Great way to visit the local country side, do some snorkelling, etc. Overall, a very high recommendation from us to visit this resort. No complaints at all, will probably go back the spring on our next visit to Cuba.

        “grate place”
went in jan 2014 had a blast. people where grate hotel was nice food was crap lol but had a good time. at night the beach staff came and had drinks with us at the disco bar it was fun lol if you leave even just $1 in your fridge you get extra beer pop and water. the staff there love gifts more then money. gave our bartender a necklace she had to stop what she was doing to show every one. make sure your money has no rips in it tho the hotel will not exchange it you have to go to the bank and it took us 3 hurs in there. i also gave one of the staff on the beach 2 pairs of shorts that i just bought and where to small on me he was about to cry he was so happy. i will be going back here again.

        “Absolutely Amazing ”
This resort completely exceeded my expectations on every single level; the resort's grounds are beautifully maintained, the beach is spectacular, the nightly entertainment/activities are lively, but what stood out the most is the amazing vibe and personalities of the entertainers/ staff. I would definitely recommend this resort, such a wonderful atmosphere and vacation.

        “Excellent trip! ”
The hotel was very nice. We booked for a superior room and they gave us a deluxe one and it was great. The deluxe (adult section) is perfect for a bigger/better room and extra places at the beach, but the pool was too quiet (perfect for those who are looking for calm). We spent most of our time to the superior section pool with animation! The service was excellent everywhere and a special thanks to Carlos (animation), Disney & Norge (pool bar) and Aixa (maid). The buffet was pretty good and was different everyday (surprisingly good for Cuba). The restaurants were also a good choice. I would recommand this hotel anytime!
