    “Avoid at all costs! ”
Whoever gave this a rating of 5 stars must have never actually been to a 5 star resort, or even a 4.5 star resort. We're from Toronto, and arrived at this resort at the end of October, 2014 and were absolutely disgusted. Everything is done in such a cheap way. Rooms - they look nice in pictures, but had many drawbacks. The mattress was not comfortable, at all. We would wake up with back and neck pain daily. The mini bar was never fully restocked, usually missing at least one item, and on one of the days it was not restocked at all. The TV channel selection was absolutely awful. There was barely anything to ever watch. I understand that when on vacation, you would not be wasting much time watching tv, but if there was ever bad weather or you just wanted to stay in for a while, you'd be bored with the shows that they provide, unless you like football. Moreover, on one of the days, our A/C was out for a couple of hours even though we phoned reception to let them know of the problem; a different day we were left without electricity for most of the day - even though we called to complain several times. The plus side to the room included the fact that there was a bath tub and a separate shower. Service - the employees were all really pleasant and always tried their best, never asking for any tips (but of course got them). However, reception proved to be somewhat useless when solving issues. The only problem with the staff was that the cleaning ladies would always scream at 8 in the morning to each other from different bungalows. I understand that most people get up early, but sometimes we want to sleep in. Please stop yelling when you're so far away from each other, it's not very considerate. If you want to change your beach towel at your leisure - good luck. On many occasions, they had run out of towels and on one of the days, they did not have them the entire day. We came by 3 times and every time they told us to just come back later and then finally told us they would not have them on that day. The resort was packed at this point, and no one could change their towels. Bars - beach bar is a total waste of space - barely any selection, no blender, and just awful cocktails. I've never had such bad Pina Coladas in Cuba, ever. There was way too much ice, and just tasted like a watered down pineapple juice mixed with some white rum. Probably because their juices were disgusting and half of the time tasted like they'd already gone bad and were sour. Also, there were no blenders at the bars. FOR MANAGERS: to make many of the cocktails (such as a Pina Colada) it is best to USE A BLENDER! So stop being so cheap and go out and buy some blenders. I've asked a worker if he knew a bar that had blenders in the resort, and he said no. The one at the snack bar broke a year ago, and they still have not replaced it. A YEAR. And you call yourself a 5 star resort... Most of the bars did not offer international drinks, until we had gone and complained. The only good bar was the piano bar, which was strategically hidden from most of the public, but offered international cocktails and had an ice blender (just for ice, nothing else). The cocktails were still not good, but they were better than at other locations. Moreover, some of the bars refused to refill our water bottles, because they could not do it there... as it turns out, you can't get water refilled, even at the main bar. I was not asking for a new bottle, just some water filled into my old bottle. We noticed that when we were being served at the buffet, bar, restaurant, or wherever, the bottled water that they had had always been opened. Meaning they took their old bottles and refilled them every time. There was a man that came around on the beach and offered pina coladas in a pineapple. The pineapple was always tasty and so was the cocktail (of course at a price of 5 pesos), always WAY better than anything at the resort. The man always had a line of people wanting to buy cocktails off of him. Food - Cuba is not known for delicious food, but any 4 star resort can put this one to shame. For the first couple of days, there was barely any selection, not to mention that the food was not edible. There was no use of spices in the dishes. My fish was cooked on oil, and that's it. I'm not asking to cook in it wine, but hey, how about some salt, pepper and other spices? Would be greatly appreciated to eat something with a TASTE. Buffet - There were no salads around, unless you want to eat one with shrimps that have their tails and everything still on them, yum. The omelette and yogurt (tasted a lot more like kefir...) for breakfast were decent, along with some cookies (croissants seemed a lot more like bread, would not recommend). For the whole week we were there, we did not find any fresh bread at the buffet (however, one of the a la carte offered some good ones). There was always little selection even when the resort was packed with guests, and food seemed to run out quickly. Many times we left hungry because there was nothing edible except for pizza and pasta (not something you want to eat EVERY DAY for lunch and dinner...). Fruits were bland except for the papaya and guava, and the deserts were mostly tasteless as well. The meat that they cooked made me laugh. I asked for a chicken breast, and the employee said of course and gave me the nastiest "chicken breast" with the bone still in and lots of fat - once again simply cooked on oil. Throughout the whole week, there was only one good soup served, which was the minestrone. On one of the days they served a "vegetarian soup" which featured meat and sausages. Luckily for me, I'm not vegetarian, but if I was, I would have been outraged. Also, when we complained about food selection, they did start to bring out some potatoes. Imagine giving a peeler to a 5 year old, and having them peel a potato.. so of course parts not peeled, some buds left on; and then this potato is simply thrown in water and boiled - absolutely bland and tasteless and looks disgusting. A la Carte - a 5 star resort with only 3 restaurants that don't even sit over 100 people... The food was never as described - for example, my "filet mignon" was a steak that was under-cooked... nothing close to a filet mignon. If the resort can't afford such a pricey meal, then don't advertise it. Basically all of the meals we ever ordered were not what we actually ordered. A chicken Parmesan did not include any Parmesan and was just breaded chicken. Entertainment - good entertainment, mostly dancing and singing but can't complain. Enjoyed the beach foam party that they had, however it became very dirty very quickly. Obviously if you're going to have foam mix with sand, it's not going to end well. But overall a fun experience with lively music. Resort Overall - no ocean view rooms, because there is always something blocking the ocean. The beach was of course great, although they did not seem to clean it for the first 3 days we were there (it was after a storm as well), and did not offer little tables. So if you went to the bar to get a drink you could either hold it in your hand and drink it, or put it on the sand. We chose this resort because of great reviews that we found on this site, but after our visit we will never be returning and wish we never had visited it in the first place. The only plus to this was that we had amazing weather, great company, and pleasant employees during our stay. I'd give this resort a 4 star rating at most.

    “Thank God for Privilege”
Hard to really rate this hotel, it is like two resorts in one and you have to bear in mind this is quite a cheap place to get to and stay for the many Canadians who form the majority of people staying here. (£400 for a week including flights) PROS The privilege staff were excellent especially Romilio and J and the staff in the privilege lounge. The rooms are excellent with good facilities The Cleaning staff are also very good and friendly The privilege pool is a nice area away from the rabble Fresh cooking stations in the buffet were very good and the staff all friendly Drinks were good in the privilege area and piano bar (except for the awful local cola which could destroy even the best brands of drinks) The coffee shop is excellent as is the local coffee Beach and sea is really good Beach restaurant is good during the day (eat local not the poor quality junk food) The Piano bar and especially Tanya great entertainment (and for the smoke free environment) Taxi and trips organised by the J and Romilio (butlers) were great value and better than organised trips Best boat trip/dolphin swim is with front desk not the TC rep The cons Smoking - in main bar areas and theater, so bad leaves limited areas to drink Al La Carte restaurants - most are just ok actually prefered the buffet (there is nothing wrong with the steaks it is the cutlery that is so blunt !!!) breakfast in privilege not very good eggs nearly always undercooked Nightclub - would have been ok but the spirits were undrinkable The local Cola - seriously in the end bought some coke from local supermarket for the mixers. privilege beach are and security - absolute joke people taking the better sunbeds away and non privilege guests taking up the beds and the security (apart from the older guy) did nothing about it. Main bar staff - unless you are waving money you are ignored Snack bar - if your desperate otherwise poor food and drinks Night time Entertainment - very short and all at the same time so by about 10:30 the place is dead. No service on beach and a long walk from privilege area to the bar Poor service around privilege pool (unless you are tipping all the time) Room service menu is pretty poor Last day money grabbing - suddenly when they know you are going home the service improves and they are not shy at putting their hands out (but then that seems to be Cuba in general) In general when considering the cost of this hotel from the UK (and it cost more than Mexico or Jamaica) it is hard to recommend it unless you are planning to stay in the privilege area. Some Tips Stay in privilege area See the privilege even if you are not staying there to arrange Taxi's or private trips to Havana with a great guide and old american car with driver (about £100 for the day) Taxi's will try to rip you off ask for the Meter to be on The little coco taxi's are great for a cheap way of getting around Beatles Bar in Varedero - fantastic night out when you've had enough of the hotel night time boredom Varadero itself very safe and no hassle Change your £ there and in small amounts (ask for small coins or they will provide 1 CUC coins which is 60p a time) Internet is £3 and hour and a decent speed - you will not get any outside the hotel and not all hotels even have it !! Book the Airport lounge as soon as you get there limited numbers available and you beat all the queues including baggage check in (saves at least an hour of queuing up) The hotel staff are not poor and a lot enjoy holidays outside of Cuba so don't feel you have to tip them all the time (go outside the tourist area if you want to see real poverty) They earn far more in tips than they do in salary. Despite how it looks, we enjoyed the holiday and met an ambition of visiting Havana before it changes too much. However after sampling other hotels elsewhere in the caribbean and at a lower cost, we will not be going back to Cuba As a footnote the new TC plane layout is excellent and the new seats are very comfortable. (you can use your own headphones - no adapter required and there is a USB port on the screen)
