Juan Gualberto Gomez Airport was built in 1989 and inaugurated by Fidel Castro,[3] thus replacing the old Varadero airport located in Santa Marta, currently known as Kawama Airport. The airport was named after a journalist, fighter for the Cuban Independence and black rights activist in Cuba Juan Gualberto Gómez (1854–1933). The terminal building has shops for tourists (including rum, cigars, T-shirts, books, carvings, pharmaceuticals), a large departures lounge cafeterias and a VIP lounge. A VIP card is available by paying $30/person to the local tour company representative. This allows the departing passenger to bypass the queues for check-in, have an agent take your departure tax to the correct official for you, and bypass any lines for passport control. The passenger is then taken to the VIP lounge which provides free food and drink (including alcoholic beverages).[4] The ground handling equipment is imported mainly from North America. There are four jet bridges, but air stairs are used for the remaining aircraft parking spaces on the apron by the terminal. Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport (IATA: VRA, ICAO: MUVR), formerly known as Varadero Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto de Varadero), is an international airport serving Varadero, Cuba and the province of Matanzas. The airport is located closer to the city of Matanzas than to Varadero. The closest airport to Varadero is Kawama Airport. In 2009, the airport handled 1.28 million passengers,[2] making it the second busiest airport in Cuba after José Martí International Airport in Havana.

      “Bad Choice”
Where to begin? The hotel itself is not terrible. Although a huge cockroach chased after me when I opened the bathroom door and turned on the light in the middle of the night, the room was pretty decent as was the lobby. What made this hotel disgusting was a combination of the staff, the other guests, management, and the food (more on that to come). We arrived from Habana and didn't have a hotel, but according to my little travel guide, this was an OK choice. Without my beloved TripAdvisor to confirm it, we looked at the lobby, got a good rate through a local travel agency, and booked for 3 nights. I told my friend we should go have a look at the rooms before committing, but the lobby was decent and we booked 3 nights in advance. A few things upon checking in: the reception staff was not service-oriented, we got a room with a thick cigarette smell (I get it, no nonsmoking rules in Cuba), and the sliding door to the balcony did not open. We told the reception staff to change us if possible, and they gave us two other rooms to choose from -- one smelled of cigarettes, the other of burn rubber. We chose burnt rubber and the hotel manager even offered a spray to mask the odor. However, he sneaked up behind me, dove into the conversation, and didn't even bother to introduce himself. Rather rude. On to the food. I understand food is scarce, but the choices were simply gross. Some of the things they offered were not identifiable. I ate cheese and croissants and white rice for those 3 days. They have a restaurant, but you have to make a reservation and it was always fully booked days in advance. This was my first time at an all-inclusive resort and very likely the last. To start with, all-inclusive eating and living in one place for an entire vacation is not the type of traveler I am, but with the stuff this place offered, it killed it for me. The other guests -- loud, obnoxious, rude and tacky. Enough said. Location -- very far from the few bars and nightlife in Varadero. Either walk 50 (small) blocks or take a taxi that will ask for $5 and won't accept less than $2-3 each way.

“the drinks made my trip ”
I went here with my wife and 4 others. It was considered "off season" and so it seemed the staff put little effort into the service. We had no room for over 5 hours upon arrival when more than half the hotel was vacant. We reserved rooms with either ocean or pool view which we received neither. We also requested King size beds and instead we all received two double beds which we had to push together. The maids were very pleasant yet most of the bar tenders and serving staff were rude and seemed like they did not want to assist us (unless we tipped them every time). The drink selection seemed very small as well as the cups served were very small. Beer was pored improperly, leaving most of my beers with half foam. Late at night there was no where to get food, so after we went to the disco off resort we came home starving and out of luck. The food in the buffet had good taste, yet after a couple days, we realized they would just serve leftovers, as well as more than half of us were sick from the food and began being very selective of what we ate. Aslo we had to pay for towels, once we left our towels out by the pool and the staff came and took them away. Once we reported it, they returned half of the towels and tried to make us pay $10 for each towel lost. That was how I ended my stay, with them telling me I could not leave until I paid $10. On the bright side, the beach was beautiful, and the pool was nice. The life guards constantly came around to us attempting to sell cigars and whatever else they could get their hands on, not very professional. The entertainment was great, games by the pool, and the nightly shows, tv had HBO which was nice when I was stuck in my room sick from the food. Even though the drinks were great, we found they would often run out of things such as Amereto which we all became quite fond of.

      “Never again! ”
My boyfriend, my sister and her husband and I stayed at this hotel July 9 -14, 2014. I would not recommend this place to anyone and would definitely not go back. I have been to CUBA seven times and this is definitely the worst hotel I have stayed at. Housekeeping was to a minimal. We never had enough towels in our room. Never mind the beach towels; we could never get them exchanged because the guy was on lunch from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM! We only received one bottle of water in the room for the week. If you wanted more you had to buy it for $2 CUC for a big bottle. Front desk, bar tenders, waiters and waitresses super cranky. Never smiled and if you said thank you to them they would just make eye contact with you. The worst was when you wanted a drink from the front lobby bar and you were wet from the pool they told you to leave! (the pool was close by) I don't expect much for food in Cuba, but by far worst food I ever ate in Cuba. Dinners were cold and ?recycled? from the day before. By day four we had to go out to get local food and it was delicious, only paid $1.50CUC, yes less than the water bottle. Check out was a nightmare! We had to check out at noon but bus pick up was not until 7 pm. At checkout we asked to sign up for courtesy room at 6:30 pm and we were told that is would be no problem. At 6:30 pm when we asked for the courtesy room we were told it was taken. Thank GOD we made some friends on the resort and they let us use the room/bathroom. Oh let?s not forget the renovations and equipment all over the place. We never saw anyone working on the renovations and the equipment was a hazard. HORRIBLE!

      “good time at hotel”
We arrived (3 people) early and rooms not ready, so we had our suitcases locked up and took our carryons and relaxed by the pool. Our rooms were ready around 3 and we received our requested rooms 3rd floor with 2 adjoining rooms. They charge for the safe 2CUC a day and count for 8 days 16CUC and safe is a card to open safe. Our rooms were kept very clean by our friendly maid and we never saw any insects in the rooms or the buffet. The air conditioner in the room was very good. There was no air conditioning in the buffet. The buffet was great at breakfast with a good selection to choose from, cereals, fruits, eggs made up already or made to order, pancakes and French toast with a selection of toppings. At lunch we checked it out and found it to be unappetizeing so we ate burgers at the ranchon. Dinner was adequate in the buffet good soups, stirfrys ,fish, already made patsta same every night but you could have some made for you, salads with dressings, fruit , cakes, sweets and icecream for dessert and very fresh bread from the oven. Service was good after our first full day at the resort. I was disappointed in the cappuccinos but my friends enjoyed the other drinks they tried. The beach was great and clean with plenty of palapas so no need to get up early for shade, there are trees as well for shade. There is a bar at the beach but no beer there. There were a mix of guests from Italy, Germany, England, Argentina and Canada with some Cubans on the weekend and everyone was well behaved. Service was good, not overly friendly but ok. Our housekeeper was very sweet as well as Katia the public relations employee who reserved our rooms for us. We all 3 had a good vacation at this hotel. Unfortunately upon returning home 2 of us were ill with fever and intestinal problems and had to take antibiotics and time off work myself 10days my friend 2 weeks. There is now way to know exactly what happened but I would bet that it was the burgers. The 2 that got ill had the burgers for lunch everyday and the one that did not get ill only had one burger on day 1. I am usually very cautious with meat being cooked very well but must have let my guard down once. Just something to make sure to be very vigilant about.

“Older resort with soul....Pleasantly surprised ”
stayed Sept 20-27... I wasn't too impressed when I first got there, but as the days went by and I became accustomed to the resort, it grew on me.. I've been to Cuba 7 or 8 times, but this was my first trip to Varadero.. I will definitely go back..to this resort and Varadero.. Don't set expectations to high, and you will be happy. I arrived at 10:00 a.m so I expected they would not have a room ready for me. Glad I had my bathing suit on under my cloths.. Lost the clothes and I was ready to enjoy. I will say promptly at 3:00 a room was ready. I do have a gut feeling there were other rooms I could have gone into, but that is just my own gut feeling, I may be wrong. There were a few hiccups with key, but they sorted it out asap. I didn't have to go chasing anyone down, they came to me as soon as they had the key. I didn't like the room as it faced the pool, 2nd floor, right across from entertainment .. Noisy! I told Juan "if that is your name? sorry I don't know" at reception. He is a very nice man, and eager to please. I requested a quieter room and he promised me one the next day.. He came through and I got a perfect room for me 284. Facing some huge trees towards the ocean side.. nice and quiet. I could open the drapes all day and no one could see in, and I had a nice view.. The rooms are dated, but the bathrooms are large, and can be very good.. They have a good sized deep tub, "which I gave a little scrub out" and if you let the hot water run 4-5 mins it does turn very hot.. good for soaking or hot shower.. the shower curtain could use a wash. I wrapped it around the rack so wouldn't touch bath water. Hair dryers available, 110 so can plug in anything. The room itself was good sized, a few English channels. Beds are tired, not so comfy, and pancake pillows. I aired out the blankets for one full day and let bake in sun, and folded them under the sheet to give a little cushion. The drapes also could use a good clean, as could bed spreads.. Sheets clean, and changed daily if so desired. The food was good, lots of variety... I can't believe anyone complaining about it as there is so much to choose from.. even if yu are a picky eater, there is plain rice, good fresh bread, vegetables, lots of fresh fruit.. etc. The pools are awesome.. I spent half a day in the pool and the other half at the beach. both places water is warm, clear. The beach is clean and not overcrowded and has good security.. The grounds of the hotel are very well maintained and worth walking around.. The evening shows were good, especially the water ballet.. those young kids are so talented.. Cuba has such soul..The usic, the dance.. The Roc Barlovento is one of the first hotels along the strip, so beach not crowded out by a bunch of hotels around it... It was a great location, easy to walk out front door into town.. The market is close by, and there is tons of jewelry/crafts/crochet dresses. to choose from and other cuban ware. The vendors are not pushy at all which is really nice.. (It would be nice to see the women making something other than those crocheted dresses.. All stores had them, and didn't look like a hot seller.. Not really appropriate for Canada. Staff: I found Juan was the only one at reception who appeared to sincerely care about the comfort of the guests.. The others had a bit of an attitude. You know like you were interupting them.. or they answered abruptly, while holding a conversation in spanish with someone else. They could use some training in customer relations. The bar staff served fast but also with that same attitude.. not seeming to enjoy their jobs at all. The DR staff was the worse for sad looks. My housekeeper was friendly, as was the bell hop and the guy who flipped burgers.. he always had a beaming smile.. Perhaps it is because in Canada customer service is such a high priority.. one on one service. Pools/ Beach : Excellent Food: Good. lots of variety, Grounds: well taken care of and very pretty. Hotel: it is old, and you can see it's age.but it is maintained, has character.. it is solid and safe..remember let hot water run 4-5 minutes and you will get hot hot water. lots of pressure. Entertainment: day could be improved..like offer water aerobics and real cards for bingo and some new games .. more to help people get to know each other... night entertainment good.. but lots of guests aren't there in the evening. I spoke English and was hard pressed to find any other English speaking people.. mostly french, spanish, german. Good thing I can amuse myself and found a good book.. I felt very safe being a solo female traveler. I would come back.. but I would try to find out about the rooms/villas out by the second pool. I never saw anyone going in or out, but I was told no more rooms available??? The only drawback for me concerning this hotel, and it is minor but noteworthy..is that they only served morning coffee at the reception/lobby bar. It was a fair walk from my room and having to navigate stairs, pathways etc in the dark without having that jolt "or several" of coffee was a little iffy...lol. There is another bar, back by this section of hotel but it is not open until 4:00pm. The Taxis!! Just to mention we are not stupid and should not be looked at to be ripped off. When I first arrived I wanted to change money and asked for the closest bank.. There was one at 26 calle, but I didn't know that. and the taxi driver took me way out to calle 62...he said he was going so far because he was in a hurry, had another fare at the airport, and the other bank might be busy.. Now does that make sense.$10. return. Later that day I asked where there was a pharmacy, and reception got me a taxi.. We settled on $7. return.. As soon as we left the hotel property the driver told me the pharmacy would be closed.. I told him to turn around, but he wouldn't.. he took me to the closed pharmacy???? I was pissed and felt I shouldn't pay.. no way in Canada would this happen, but what am I to do there.. I paid him. his hand was out no matter it was a futile trip. Then I found out there was a pharmacy 4 blocks from hotel??? They should know this is a real turn off and leaves a bad taste in tourists mouths...we are not idiots.. I have a feeling the person at receptions knew also it would be closed.. but wants to give business to locals. You never pay more than $3. one way anywhere downtown... and it's easy to get a taxi back. Always settle on price first. Take your own bath towel because the towels are small and no way wrap around an average sized person. I could tell at the resort most staff is working hard to please, the ones walking around.. it looks like management is on site looking to improve. It's just a short walk from hotel proper to beach.. steps.. All in all a great trip, with lots of good memories. it is what you make out of it.

“Thanks For Making Our 40th Wedding Anniversary So Very Special! ”
My husband and I are both young retirees as well as seasoned world travelers. We prefer staying in smaller hotels or with local families due to the fact that we quite enjoy meeting new people as well as learning about other cultures and languages. We were not at all disappointed with the choice that we made staying at ROC Barlovento, an excellent location in the town of Varadetro, from Aug. 29 to Sept. 12, 2014. Overall, we would give this resort about 3 stars, better than two other resorts that we had stayed at in Cuba on two other previous holidays. Let me begin by sincerely thanking the new manager Juan. I e-mailed him ahead of our visit and he made sure that we received the room that we had requested, made the a-la-carte reservation on our behalf for the night of our anniversary ahead of time, and also put into place the Spanish Instruction lessons that we had requested. Throughout the two weeks, he was very visible throughout the hotel and its environs, quietly welcoming new guests, ensuring that his staff were on task and that jobs were being completed to a high standard. The rest of the staff including the receptionists, travel agents, bar tenders, animation staff, resident artist, maids and of course our Spanish teachers were also very kind, friendly and attentive to customer needs. It really does help if you try to speak a little Spanish as well as tip a CUC once in a while for really good service, although this definitely is not expected every time. The beach is lovely with lots of palapas (umbrellas) for shade as well as lounge chairs. No need to worry about waking up early to save one! I am however rather disappointed in the number of individuals who leave their garbage on the beach...especially the tourists during the daytime. That being said though, the hotel staff really does make a valiant effort to clean up beach by the next morning. My husband and I also took advantage of the free rides on the Hoby cat sailboats manned by hotel staff in addition to the paddle boats. This was so much fun and we highly recommend it! The beach bar was also very close to the action and Javier always ensured that we had the drinks that we wanted even if he had to bring in the fresh mint from his own home for our much beloved Mojitos! Such a kind and generous gesture on his behalf that made our stay that much more special. On a side note, we also recommend going to the air conditioned Premium Lounge club on Fri, Sat and Sun. nights to enjoy premium cocktails and music at very inexpensive prices. Smoking was a bit of an issue for us at this hotel as some guests found it very difficult to not want to smoke in the restaurants. However, the staff did their best to get guests to stop as well as getting them to go outside to do so. Some individuals would also try from time to time to smoke in the pool which made it uncomfortable for non-smokers. The rooms were very basic and outdated and do require some work to update them in order to receive an overall higher star rating. However, they were very clean and more than adequate to meet our needs. There were some minor problems with the toilet which my husband was able to fix. The water pressure was also very good with plenty of hot water whenever we needed it. There were also soap and shampoo dispensers for our use as well as a hair dryer. The air conditioning was excellent and the TV worked just fine, maybe just a bit fuzzy at times, but with many different languages represented. The bed was very clean and comfortable as were the supplied pillows. The fridge also worked quite well and a huge bottle of water was supplied for us which we kept refilling daily at the bar. The maid service was excellent and our towels and sheets were changed daily. She left many lovely towel art creations which we enjoyed immensely! With respect to the food service, this really is quite a personal thing we feel. We especially enjoyed the cappucinos at the Lobby Bar every morning with our breakfast as we did not particularly like the coffee in the main restaurant. The omelettes were also very good and were freshly made to order. There was also a variety of fresh fruit as well as juices. Lots of vegetables were available as well many different kinds of meats and breads. Lunches and dinners were overall pretty good...something for everyone. We just did not care for the actual main building itself. Just seemed to be very poor air circulation at times and we were very hot given that it was the low season... but we did like the restaurant on the beach and often went there for lunch for grilled sandwiches and hamburgers! The bar there was also excellent! We actually preferred the a-la-carte restaurants more.. make sure that you book them as soon as you can, early in the morning, at the front desk. The Spanish Azotea red and white wines that they served us in these restaurants really surprised us and were excellent! All of the evening shows were actually quite good and surprised me....impressive in fact....especially the Cuban Beach party, the Aquatic Show and the Magic shows. Can these people ever dance and sing! The animation staff during the daytime really tries hard to ensure that everyone has a good time whether it be playing bingo, teaching exercise and dance classes, a game of beach volleyball...you name it! And they let the choice be up to you if you want to participate or not... The price of this resort also allows you to take advantage of shopping at the close by local craft markets, eating out at local restaurants ( hop on an inexpensive yellow coco cab...loved the restaurants in the Josone Park!) or even going on local excursions... Jeep Safari, Bay of Pigs, Cardenas, Mantanzas, etc. The 5 CUC hop on- hop off bus is an excellent value and really does allow you to visit many of the hot spots in Varadero as well as along the peninsula. We also took a taxi for 70 CUS to go to Old Havana for the weekend and stayed at a casa particular for 35 CUCs. Such an amazing 3 day trip! We strongly recommend this resort for those individuals who want exceptional bang for the buck... the price for us from Toronto... two weeks, two people, 2000 Canadian Dollars taxes included, although in high season it could very well be a couple hundred dollars more per week and still be considered an excellent value. Thanks Barlovento for making our 40th wedding anniversary so very special!

We stayed here for a week. The staff were polite and helpful but not pandering to every wish. The house maid wrote notes welcoming us and hoping of a tip. As everyone who does anything in hotel industry expects a tip for doing anything. Got a little annoying this. Food was basic but palatable. The pools were clean and well maintained. The beach was nice but gathered lots of garbage during the day. They were cleaned every morning.

      “It was only okay ”
I had booked the Kawama for April 21-28 in early February and was very disappointed to find it was overbooked when I got there. Back on to the bus to Barlovento. I got checked in and found my room...not sure how, as it was a dark, unlit hallway. I was really disgusted with what I was given: bloodstains on the sheet, rusted out tub...and I'm not THAT tourist, you know? I figured I'd stick with it for the night and see if I couldn't get moved to Kawama the next day. I didn't end up changing hotels but I was given a better room on the second floor, overlooking the pool and was allowed to use Kawama's facilities for the duration. Good compromise. I found the bed comfortable but the pillows were wafer thin, and in the style of a bodypillow. I could see fisticuffs over pillows with more than one person in a bed. ;o) The beach was nice but I ended up spending most of my time at Kawama; there was one horny security guard who wouldn't stop staring at me and making comments. The food was bad. Breakfast was okay--I had an omelette once and stuck with cheese, bread, and chorizo the other mornings I ate there (the cheese, bread and c. Lunch was brutal so had the hamburgers from the snack bar after my second experience in the dining room; a waiter was going around filling wineglasses and ignored me. When I asked if I could please have a glass of red wine, he said, "Pah!!" and walked away. WTH? He never did give me a glass of wine. Anyway, the hamburgers were good, and the cook was friendly. At dinnertime I could NOT get a server. At all. The service in the dining room was terrible. I went to the Kawama for breakfast a few times and was AMAZED when a waitress brought me coffee AND juice! And a refill! Two thumbs down for the buffet overall. The a la cartes were great. Very good food at the Italian, and my server Yacqui was lovely. The guys in the Mexican were great entertainers, and the food was very good too. The front desk staff? I thought they were amazing. The best. I had issues with my key a few times, and needed change a couple of times...always had a smile for me. Arranged for late check out easily too. Entertainment was good--the dancers were amazing! Those young men and women have some amazing moves. The rock band was good too, but I dunno...I prefer Cuban music in Cuba to classic rock. The bar staff were pretty nice overall, with some being friendlier than others. The woman at the quiet pool bar was a sweetheart. The grounds and hotel were lovely and well-maintained. I found toilet paper, toilet seats, and soap in every bathroom I tried. Biggest pet peeve and the big reason I will not go back? The smoking. There was nowhere for a non-smoker to escape all of the smoke, except her own room. Even in the lobby, people were smoking. Standing in line for a coffee? People smoking. In the theatre? Smokers. It was quite awful. If I had not been able to escape to Kawama, I would not have had a very good vacation at all.

      “Just OK ”
We stayed here on April 18,2014. The hotel is in need of some TLC. The good points were the location, beach and staff. Thank you to Rammond,Olga,Edie and Iris who were all outstanding. The beach was outstanding and being right in the town was alot of fun. The food was passable but not outstanding, the buffet was small with limited choices and tended to be the same most nights. The only a la cart we tried was the Mexican and it was great try to eat there often if you can. The rooms were clean but the beds were the worst I have ever slept on. With some work this could be a great resort but as it is now I would spend a little more and stay at a newer resort.

      “A nice vacation ”
My husband and I and our daughter stayed at this hotel from April 18th to the 25th. We had a pleasant stay. I found the food to be okay here. There was always something you could find to eat. My biggest complaint would be the beds. We felt like we were literally sleeping on the springs in the mattress. They really should change the mattresses. Also the a la cartes weren't set up very good. We only got to eat at 1 the Italian. It was very tasteful but they told us at the desk that you have to show up the day before at 4 to book for the following day but when we tried to book for the Mexican it was already booked up for the next day and we were right there at 4 so somehow people seem to be able to book further ahead then they let on. We gave up trying. You are only allowed 2 per week per room anyhow. I found we had good maid service. We always had fresh towels and an extra roll of toilet paper. We like to tip our maid good though and I find you get better service in the room that way. Never a long wait for anything where it is a small resort. I found the staff to be quite pleasant although the front staff did seem to be a little surly but they have to deal with a lot of peoples complaints so that might explain why. A swim up bar would be a good idea too although we liked the pool. And the beach was beautiful but the beach bar should serve beer. A lot of people like to drink beer on the beach. I found it to be a clean resort and the bathrooms around the resort were clean as well with toilet paper. We always bring our own facecloths for the week too as they don't seem to exist in Cuba. So if your not overly fussy about food and you want a good time I think you would like this resort.

Enjoyed my stay. Close to beach , close to town, everything was great except the service. Maids didn't do much , only was aloud one bottle of water in the room for the week, we had to buy water if we wanted. Front desk staff cranky . I don't expect much for food in Cuba , but by far worst food I ever ate in Cuba, Small selection . Check out time was Horror !! Gave us a room to shower before we caught our bus : have pictures to prove it. Not clean , human feces smudged on floor, smelt of mold and mildew, mold on wall, no towels, bottom of shower was gooey, no toilet paper , no shampoo , no soap! Never any toilet paper in the bathrooms around the resort. Enjoyed my stay but won't go back there

      “Good Value for the money”
This was my 5th visit to Varedero, 8th to an all-inclusive. Food at the buffet was the best I've experienced so far, the Mexican a la cart was excellent. Beach and pool were great, although the pool has no swim up bar if this is important to you. Most of the staff were fantastic, I left my sandals by the pool one afternoon and they were located for me the next day, needless to say a couple staff got generous tips for that. These people truly depend on your tips so please be generous. If you want a day trip into Havana ask the Bartender Cesar (main bar night shift) to take you. It was my 4th trip to Havana and the best one I've done, he is very knowledgeable and funny, and his English is near perfect. On his trip you won't get stuck going to the mandatory cigar and rum shops like on the bus tours that are designed to separate you from your money and waste half the day. Cesar caters to what you want to see and do. The resort seems to attract an older crowd, at least during our stay. Mostly couples 40s and older, but that all depends on the week you book. The resort is a little tired, but kept clean, the guests I met were a mixture of people from all over Canada (English and French), Germany, Italy and even Australia. It's a nice size resort in that you don't need a shuttle to get around, the walk from the lobby to the beach is about 200m. It's not as nice as the brand new hotels down at the end of the peninsula, but the price is right and the location is good, only a 5 peso cab ride to the centre of town where you will find a couple great bars that weren't in Varadero on my last visit, one called "Calle 62" and the other called "The Beetles". "The Beetles" has a live band every night covering great rock bands from AC/DC to U2, they do a fantastic job, put on an awesome show, no cover and beers are only $2. It's worth going back to Varadero just for that bar. Barlovento really grew on me while I was there. It's no Ritz, but it's a good value for your money.

      “Mediocre Hotel ”
The location within Varadero was good. We were the first to get off the bus from the airport and last to be picked up on the way back. The beach was great and we loved the lobby, and the beach bar. We were super close to the market. It's the only one you really need to look at considering they all sell similar items. We switched rooms twice. The first room was the pits. Only one light worked, the air conditioner was broken, the room was damp and it smelt like a basement. I have terrible allergies and was really struggling with the quality of the room. They switched us to another as soon as wel asked; promising that the air conditioner worked but the safe was broken. When we got there, the air conditioner did not work, and still only one light worked. We had to stay there for two nights due to no other rooms being available. Finally they moved us to the third floor of the building (room 318), and it was great. Dry, air conditioned, working lights. There was a leak in the corner by the air conditioner but it was small potatoes compared to the other conditions. Plus side, both of our housekeepers were wonderful and super helpful. We took the Havana Tour bus into Havana but opted to show ourselves around instead of taking the guided tour. It was fun! We wandered down side streets and the locals were very kind. We visited Factoria Plaza Vieja - a microbrewery in old Havana, explored the square, visited a screen printing shop. It was a great experience. Then when we were finished he hailed a '56 Bel Air for a cab ride back to meet our bus. All in all a great experience. I definitely recommend jumping on the Varadero Tours Bus and just riding it around Varadero. It's a two hour trip but the view is spectacular. Definitely need to ride on the second level and I strongly recommend the back of the bus. Hope you enjoy your trip!

      “Perfectly Fine”
My thoughts: The good: Like most people say, the location is great! You're usually the first to be dropped off and the last to be picked up. On my day tour to Havana we we're the 2nd last stop, and the guide said it had taken an hour to pick everybody up (& would take that long to drop people off). You can easily walk into town (though you'll mostly just see snack bars and little craft markets selling the same stuff. I also like that while I was there it was never crowded. There was never a big line at the buffet (usually a few people waiting for pasta or eggs), rarely a crowd at the bar and I was always able to get a beach chair under a palapa. Most people seemed to be Spanish or French, though there were some Canadians and other Europeans at the resort. The beach was stunning, lots of shady spots if you're a pale girl like me, but lots of open areas too. The sand is soft and the water is warm. To the left of the buoys is a sand bar, so you can head out into the ocean for a ways and still only be waist deep. Most days there will be a guy in a little golf cart type vehicle who will come up the beach selling pineapple drinks. They are 5 cuc, and he cores the pineapple right in front of you, mixes you the drink and gives you the pineapple to eat. Pretty good value in my opinion. One day one of the lifeguards was offering Lobster Tails for lunch. 20 CUC for 3 lobster tails, rice and a salad. I didn't partake, but the people who did seemed to enjoy it. For the most part the service from the maids, bartenders and other front of the line staff was top-notch. The bread rolls at lunch and dinner were delicious, especially the ones with the flour dusting on top. The Okay My room 210. It was close to the main pool and came with two double beds. Everything was impeccably clean but it was very dated, and their was a bit of static hum on the TV. The drinks. They are not fancy (though they do make traditional mojitos) and they have no frozen strawberry daiquiris but they were made pretty strong. I found the bar by the Italian restaurant to have the best drinks as the pina cola and lemonda mixes were the coldest/slushiest on the resort. The bad: The front desk staff - most seemed surely and cranky. At best, they were indifferent. The food - I knew the food wasn't going to be great, but it was a little worse than expected. Because the resort is small, there was not a lot of variety, and because there were a lot of flies in the dining room, I didn't go for any of the fruit/salad bar items that were in the open. I don't blame the cooks, they do a decent job with what they have, but all of the vegetables seem like they are from a can, all kind of have that grey tinge to them. You're best bet is to go with whatever is being freshly grilled that day. Sadly I only discovered at the end of my trip that they make pancakes on the grill upon request, they are pretty tasty! Saturday evening noise. For the most part my room was pretty quiet at night, but on Saturday, the night before I left, they played extremely loud music until 3am. So loud that I could hear every word of each song. I'm not unreasonable, I would have been fine if it lasted until midnight, even 1am, but 3am is a bit excessive. Overall, I had a nice time at the resort, loved the beach, and felt I got what I paid for. That being said, if I were to go South again, I would pay more for a more updated hotel with better food.

Rooms definitely need updating but apparently the govt took away the resort's reno funds so they try hard with the little that they have. Nice location close to the market and restaurants. It's a quiet, relaxed setting if you are looking for an adult only resort though there is also ample opportunity for fun. Excellent quality evening shows - best we've ever seen anyways. One of the nicest beachfronts also (just prepare yourself against the sand fleas!!) Front desk staff need to cheer up and be more helpful though. Food was mostly good- just use caution as with any buffets. The a la carte restaurants were a bit disappointing though (still buffet style). Overall, if this is your first trip to Varadero as it was for us, it is best to go with an open mind and remember that Cuban resorts are not going to meet the same standards as 3-4 star resorts in Mexico or other caribbean locations.

      “Excellent Week at Barlovento! ”
I booked this trip on Thursday and departed less than 24 hours later on Friday. For $700 all inclusive this hotel was a bargin. Yes the food options are limited but we found something to eat, yes the water pressure was mostly non existent but we still got showered. The staff and guests make the resort. The beach was great, the room adequate and very dated but we didn't stay in the room much. The location in Varadero made it worth while as we would walk outside the resort on the strip both day and night and visited the many restaurants and bars along the way. I would return here in a second if I got the same price. I met plenty of return guests that have been visiting this hotel for years. If you really know yourself and have a clean understanding of how hotel ratings work in Cuba then you will be fine otherwise save yourself the dissapointment and book elsewhere otherwise you'll simply be back here complaining about your stay.

Given the price of this hotel, I give it 4 out of 5. It wasn't amazing, but I wouldn't expect amazing for the price we paid. We still had a really good time. The beach was beautiful and the rooms were functional and clean. Only points I didn't like were the food, which was average at best, and the evening entertainment, which was easy enough to just avoid entirely. I would recommend this hotel for a budget conscious, all-inclusive option in Varadero.

I really enjoyed this resort for the fact that it is not very big, and not overcrowded. We really enjoyed the night entertainment and the staff were incredibly friendly! The food was not the best for most of the stay which is normal for Cuba (I have been before), however we were there for New Year's Eve and they did an AMAZING job with the food and made the night very special by serving everyone Sangria in the line while waiting to be seated, and gave all the women roses! They had an incredible party afterward dinner with champagne and party favors! I also really loved the location of this resort as it was within walking distance to everything we wanted to see! Overall a great trip and would go back to Barlovento.

      “Quiet and nice ”
I enjoyed my stay at Barlovento. I travelled solo. It was very quiet(I'd say less than 1/2 capacity). That was the only real problem I had. There were not many guests to mingle with. The evening entertainment was really good and well done. Especially the water ballet. The food was not as bad as I was warned. I was told Cuban food was bland and boring. I enjoyed most of the food and ate at the one buffet almost every night. There is a fantastic Italian restaurant just off property that has amazing calzones and pizza. The maid service was good. Most of the week I had the do not disturb sign on and did not hear a peep from the staff. The Bar staff were mainly friendly and were very willing to refill my water whenever I asked. The Lobby bar staff were very friendly, especially late at night and made great Ham and Cheese toasted sandwiches that were a great late night snack on more than one occasion. The beach bar was lacking though. They had a rum-punch that was horrible and no beer. A short walk to the other bar took care of that. The beach was great but it was far from clean. I was actually disgusted by the amount of beer cans and bottles(rum, wine etc.) tossed all over the beach. There were plenty of garbage bags and baskets to throw these in but it seemed no one bothered. There were quite a few cans being tossed around in the waves as well. I was not impressed. I will assume these were from locals visiting the beach because why would a hotel guest buy cases of beer etc. when it is all inclusive. I visited the beach at night a few times only to see that the litter was not taken care of by nightfall. Some piles(and I do mean piles) of cans and bottles were there for over a 24 hour period. I'm not sure if this is due to short staff because it's off-season, but I'd be weary of how bad it would be in peak season. Also it is NOT a private beach setting. Locals run amok in the water and within the first 10 yards inshore. They did not use the chairs(for the most part) because security and police were on the beach and I did witness a few locals stay away for this reason. I'm not saying I expected a private beach, but I did expect it to be cleaned more often. That being said, back to the positive aspects. Took a day trip to Havana(loved it), rented a moped on property and would do both again. The location was great because it's on the edge of town and within walking distance of restaurants and shopping markets and the bank(about 20 minute walk away). I have never felt safer off any resort before. I enjoyed my stay and will very likely be back(perhaps next time in season).

      “another good stay ”
Was here again mid May. Hotel was just as good as last time in mid March. Food still quite acceptable for Cuba standards. Not comparable to North American or European standards but it is good for Cuba. The Hotel management has brought in European chefs to help out with the offerings and presentations. It has made for a good offering. I like the slow cook type of stews so I was pleased. Others I spoke to not so much. Always fish available and every day some variety of red meat. Mostly pork and chicken. The roasted chicken was very tasty. Always a good choice of vegetables for salad. I liked that. Deserts were plentiful and the ice cream fabulous. I may be insulting some people with this comment but I must say that I liked that this is now an Adult resort so around the buffet there are not a lot of kids picking at and putting back food. Disgusting for me when I witness this happening. Where are the parents to teach some buffet etiquette. I know that when I was on trips with my own children that I did not let this type of unsanitary action take place. The concierge, Katia, was always available and I give a big thank you to her for her patience with me and the help she gave with teaching me some Spanish. Also the help in trying to get me the room I wanted. I was also impressed with the fact that the General Manager, Juan Carlos, was quite visible around the resort checking things out. He did not just sit in his office. He was also quite approachable and we had several conversations. If a person didn't know what his position was then I think that most would figure him as a guest. I think that he is one of the reasons why this resort is improving. Very hands on to the operation. Trying to set up room improvements also. In Cuba this is a difficult task. Of course the staff was very good and friendly. Everyone from the maids to the buffet staff to the bartenders were always quite friendly and attentive. The beach was fantastic, the ocean was nice and warm. Loved it. All in all had a good time and if you go please enjoy yourself.

The location of this Hotel is ideal as it is right on Varadero main street. The staff in the Hotel are for the most part very friendly, exempt for a girl named "Ytayna" from the front desk she was just rude and unhelpful, and we heard from other people she is just rude with everybody. The animation people were just the friendliest, funniest people ever and we all loved them, the guy is Frank and I can't remember the name of the girls. The life guard at the pool Daynelis she is very sweet, and even tho she docent speak english she sure tried to be as social as possible, always watching our stuff by the pool and smiling. “Barlovento ”
Hello everyone: First let me say that we were upgraded to the Barlovento from the Kawama when it was overbooked for a Cuban delegation of metallurgists. This was from April 20-27 and it was a delightful upgrade. This is an adults only hotel and this was my first experience at such a hotel. All the packages advertise pretty much the same room details and Sunwing was no different. What I can tell you is that the hotel is so well situated and close to actual town - walking to the banks, the markets , bars and restaurants made this location one I would consider going back to. The other time I was in Varadero we relied on the double decker and taxi . Everyone in Cuba knows someone who can help out a tourist looking for a driver for a day and the front lobby attendant was no different. He found us a driver for the day to take us to Playa Larga, Playa Giron ( and the Bay of Pigs museum) and the Crocodile farm. The best part was the lunch we had - deer, lobster, crocodile ( YUM) shrimp, and chicken with all the typical trimmings - congri, tomatoes and cucumbers as well as a beer, a Cuban 3 -piece band rounded off the experience - 100 CUC for 2! That was the only excursion that we took. I have been to Cuba 15 or so times and look for off the beaten track activities if I chose excursions. I can only suggest to those of like mind to trust the hotel employees to find you someone to take you where organised excursions do not. It is the unexpected that makes it a memorable trip. Back to the hotel - very large and spread out, beautiful beach, lovely gardens and fabulous entertainment and a great animation team. This is not the place to book if you are looking for a youth-oriented crowd, disco and wild and wooly beach and pool activities. In light of the fact that this is an adults only hotel most people were in the 30-70 age group. However the hotel is close to several night clubs and discos if that is what you are looking for. The beach is beautiful although we did spend a great deal of time at one or the other of the pools. The coffee bars are wonderful and the food is exactly what is served throughout Cuba wherever I have been. It is worthwhile stating that there is no importation of North American foods, snacks, staples , vegetables or anything ( that I have seen ) that we take for granted and, in some cases , some tourists expect. It is a country where the chef who makes your 3 egg omelette every morning is entitled " to his monthly animal protein: 10 eggs, a half-pound of chicken, 10 ounces of fish, and about a pound of other meat including a mix of hot dogs, more chicken, a ham-like product called "jamonada" and "picadillo texturizado" _ a bland ground beef-type mixture of mostly soy." ( to quote the Washington Post Havana Bureau Chief, Anita Snow) I will be going back to the ROC Barlovento with my husband in the fall for ten days. This will be the best hotel for a thoroughly relaxing, beach and pool-side vacation with no children and no teens. We will take advantage of the proximity to the town of Varadero and maybe this time we can find another off the beaten track escapade...

      “Going back.”
Have travelled before to Cuba, always to different hotels until our last 3 vacations which have been to Roc Barlovento. On our first trip we found it amazing that people had been returning to this hotel for many years. So we did something we always said we would not do, returned to the same hotel, not just once, but twice. Roc Barlovento is an old hotel. We have noticed the changes/ improvements over this past two years. Some of the rooms have been updated with new mattresses, pillows. The hotel is clean and once again we had a great lady cleaning our room. (thankyou Clarys) Great coffee bar in the lobby. Ground staff are remarkable. Have not yet tried the a la cartes. Many fantastic staff in the buffet, usually sit in the same area (our choice) but all staff are pleasant. We do tip as we would at home. Rather shocked to see a few Canadian dimes (10 cents) left for tips as this would be the best way to insult a waitress/waiter in Canada. Hopefully this is only a few tourists. Grateful for the help of Katia in customer service. Plan to return this year. Recently heard off the passing of one of the female staff. Our condolences to everyone at Roc Barlovento.

      “Will return ”
I stayed at Roc Barlovento the week of April 20 2014. I'm not going to lie, when I walked into our room I thought that there was NO way that I would be able to sleep there for a whole week. The rooms were very old, and the couple we went with had a very foul smelling room and had to switch. Aside from the rooms, I was 100% satisfied with this resort. The food was how I expected, not good - but in a foreign country you have to expect this. We spent most of our nights eating dinner at the Italian restaurant across the street, they had great pizza. The beach is AWESOME. No shortage of loungers and not crowded. The resort had awesome entertainment in the evenings and we had a lot of fun with all the people that we met there. The bar staff was very friendly, but the women at the front desk were absolutely horrendous to talk to. Especially the lady named Made. I actually avoided going to the front desk when she was working because she was so rude. All in all, it was an AWESOME week at Roc Barlovento, and we will be returning. I spoke to a man who said he had been to Cuba over 20 times, and has stayed at Barlovento the last ten times because it is the best resort in Varadero.

      “please consider ”
Having booked in Oct. and our travel agent asked for third floor and told them it was our wedding anniversary we were very disappointed with the musty first floor room assigned us. Back to the front desk we went and after a long wait we got a decent room on the third floor. Our other complaint would be the cigarette butts and broken plastic glasses in the sand at the beach that should be raked up better but must blame messy tourists for that! We found the food tasty, and the cappuccinos at the coffee bar was excellent even though the exhaust fumes from the buses were too close to that coffee bar in lobby. We loved being able to fill our travel mugs with hot chocolate, cappuccinos, tea or coffee at the buffet ourselves to take with us, something all resorts should have but a lot of resorts don't. Staff at Barlovento were nice, pools & beach good and ocean water there clear & clean. Resort could use a good pressure washing but it was in a perfect location to walk (bus & cabs easily available) downtown & to restaurants or to sit and watch fishermen on the canal. We really enjoyed our ten night vacation at this resort. Having been to Cuba a few times before we brought what we might need for preventing and treating bites, tummy upsets, sunburn etc. with us. We also brought and gave as gifts in zipper bags hygiene and first aid supplies such as first aid kits, tensor wraps, tongue/tooth brush kits, small size Tylenol & Advil, children's Tylenol etc. which we bought at the dollar stores and everyone from the bus drivers to the maids to the airport bathroom attendants all really, really appreciated these supplies for their families. Health care may be free for them but first aid supplies are limited while we in Canada have inexpensive & easy access to these so please consider giving first aid and hygiene items as gifts instead. We are considering returning to this resort again in a couple years.

      “Wonderful relaxing holiday ”
I enjoyed the hotel, beach, pool, food and drinks. Great location as you can walk into the town of Varadero, there is an Italian restaurant kitty corner to the resort, and an artisan's market a block away. There is also a bank which is the best place to change money, just past the Kawama resort, about a 10 to 15 minute walk. I travelled by myself, I'm 61, and had a fabulous time. I could walk down the stairs, straight out the hall and be at the beach in 2 minutes. There were always loungers and palapas available even when arriving late in the day. The best bar is where lunch is served by the Italian restaurant. The food was plentiful and good. I had brought seasonings with me but never had to use them. There was always salad dressing. I loved the fresh grilled fish at the lunch bar and enjoyed the pork, beef and chicken as well. There were always lots of veggies, salads and fresh bread. The Mexican and Creole a la cartes were fine. My room was on the second floor at the back of the hotel, overlooking the gardens. It was quiet at all times. There was a slight musty smell, but I have been told the first floor rooms are much more musty, while the third floor are the best. The bathroom was fine and included hairdryer and European shower/bathtub. The safe was 16 CUCs per week. The room was large, always very clean, with two 3/4 beds that I found comfortable but I like firm mattresses. The AC worked but the remote didn't. Next time I will take 2 AAA batteries as complaining to the front desk was ineffective. I have the same style ac at home that doubles as a heat pump, so when checking the remote, I took the cover off the ac and found the filters to be absolutely filthy. I took them off and shook and then wiped them over the edge of the balcony, so room 272 now has clean ac. Lots of towels but I brought facecloths. There was a European style balcony and outside chair where I would sit and read if I was up early. The tv worked great and CTV Montreal was available in English. I tipped everywhere, always kept some pesos (CUCs) with me for tipping and received great service. The bartenders and servers at the restaurants were especially friendly. Please don't leave Canadian loonies for tips as loonies only have value in Canada. I felt safe everywhere at this hotel and outside it as well. I loved the beach which was fabulous. I am a strong swimmer so loved the windy days when I could play in the big waves and body surf. I would definitely return to this hotel either alone or with a travel companion. The rooms are fine for 2 but 3 would be a crowd. I travelled during March break and expected crowded conditions but there were never crowds or line-ups for the buffet or bars. The entertainment was fine, and I especially liked the Cuban dance group and the aquatic ballet.

      “Roc Rocks ”
Travelled to Cuba alone and stayed at Roc Barlovento for a week. After checkin, 5am in the morning, got a drink at the 24 hour lobby bar and that was the start of a wonderful vacation. Met new friends there and Roc became like my home for the following week. The resort is small enough that you can forge new friendships easily and you get to know the staff easily. My favourite was a gentleman named German serving in the buffet. He is an exceptional man, brought my wine before I could ask and engaged in conversation, a true gentleman, deserves to be tipped well. My room was overlopoking the pool and was clean and bright. I'm not a fussy person so didn't pay attention to the few things that didn't work properly. The beach is wonderful, but I was badly bitten by sand fleas. Maybe 5% had the same problem, they love me, as do mosquitoes. A few cocktails made it feel a whole lot better. The buffet was good and changed daily, lovely fresh bread and the outdoor lunch buffet was excellent, fresh fish, ribs and chicken on the BBQ, just lovely. We tried the Mexican buffet and it was excellent. The location is excellent, just turn left out of the lobby and you are downtown Varadero, where you can shop at the local markets and experience the true Varadero flavour. Above all, the Cuban people are amazing, they cannot do enough for you. At Barlovento, I encountered some very rude guests with no manners and commend the staff who kept smiling regardless, they put up with a lot at times and deserve to be treated with the utmost respect. Tip them well, they deserve so much more The entertainment was excellent, the magic show and dancers kept us well entertained all week. Notice I refer to "us" although I travelled solo, made a few lovely friends and we are already talking about our next trip......if my husband doesn't mind!! If I was to return to Varadero, Barlovento would be my choice, great location, staff, food, overall great experience. Highly Recommend.

      “a great place ”
The Barlovento is a great place to stay. You are just footsteps away from downtown and a host of great restaurants. The buffets are good, the a la cartes are great, some of the best we have had . The beach and ocean are fantastic except for all the cigarette butts, a lot of smokers. The room was ok some mornings no hot water but by afternoon always lots, the room was always clean and the maid very friendly and happy. One of the great things about Cuba is that there were people from at least 8 different countries. Most of the staff could speak at least 3 languages. Katia at customer services is a great resource and a great person who will help you with any problems. This was our 1st but not last trip to Cuba and the Barlovento. Things to bring, Kleenex and TP, writing paper, to go mug and most important a great attitude!

“rocking time at the roc barlovento ”
My husband and I recently stayed at the Barlovento for my birthday on a recommendation by a friend who goes there frequently. We have been to Cuba 4 times but have never stayed in town. It was quite an experience. The trip from the hotel was short...thank goodness The front of the hotel is lovely, sort of Spanish stlye with an old world charm. The grounds are very well kept. Lobby: The lobby was small but intimate and cozy. It had everything you needed. The entertainment in the lobby was nice and friendly. Service/Reception: We arrived at dinnertime and were the only two people to get off. (That worried me, I wondered why no one else was coming here). However, we were well received and check in moved fast and friendly, and we were heading up to our room within 10 minutes. I was happy we were the only ones who had gotten off the bus here. Room: Our room was fine. It was clean, we had plenty of towels, water, and our maid was extremely pleasant (Madlys). We were a little disappointed that we had 2 beds. Trying to sleep 2 people in one bed was not comfortable so we asked to change our room to one that had 1 king bed. We were promised a bed the next days but it took 3 nights to get it. ( it made sleeping very, very cozy)...We moved to a room with a king bed and were very pleased with the room and our new maid (Alina) she was a doll. Buffet/a la cartes The buffet was excellent. Lots of choices and most of the food was very tasty. The morning omelet man was fabulous. He could cook a mean egg. I have been to 4 and 5 star resorts and I have to say that the food here was exceptional in comparison. We were disappointed with the Italian a la carte. The food was not very inspiring there. The Mexican a la carte was very good. Interesting food and the Maitre d was quite a character. He was funny, helpful, and sweet. Beach/Pools The beach was great. But it could use some grooming. People dropped cigarette butts, cups and other garbage on the beach. Not very nice for those of us who try to be respectful. Perhaps more security people handling the slobs who like to dump their garbage would work. The pools were lovey and very well kept. It was not a rowdy place which was great, and it was adult only, even better. (I work in and elementary school, no children was the way to go). We never had a problem with our towels. The animation staff were cheerful, fun loving, and enthusiastic. Night shows: These shows were entertaining , fun and full of great talent. We loved each and everyone of them. Location: This hotel cannot be beat for location. We walked out at night and sampled the various restaurants, clubs and other tourist attractions. Most of them we could walk to and others we took wonderful old car taxis and the cute little motorized rickshaws. We took the Varadero City Tour and had a great time. Cuba is such a beautiful unspoiled country and one of the few places a tourist can still feel safe. Customer Service: When we needed to change our room or when I had questions, I spoke to Katia at the customer service desk. She is a dear, sweet woman who helped us get settled and answered my questions. She works very hard to keep the Barlovento guests happy and satisfied. She takes care of everyone with a big smile and a positive attitude. She is an asset to the hotel chain. Overall: This is a perfectly located hotel with pleasant staff, good service and good food. We enjoyed our stay there and are planning to go back.

“Wonderful hotel and great staff ”
My wife and I have been going to Barlovento for the last 8 years, sometimes 3 times a year. We have no problem staying in this great hotel because of staff?s professionalism and their warm welcome. All the staff work as a team and they are always there to help you and make sure you are having a nice vacation. The room is always very clean and comfortable and the food is great, Mexican, Italian, Buffet etc? Everyone, from the maids, the buffet staff to the bartenders, are always very friendly and always want to help you. Location is great, it's within walking distance of restaurants, shopping markets and the bank. Even though Cuba is having difficult times I see improvements on the resort all the time. Barlovento has a new General Manager is name is Juan Jose R, Gerente. Every day you see him walking around making sure that everything is ok. He takes the time to talk to you and makes sure you are having a nice stay at the hotel. I believe that in 8 years Juan Jose is one of the best General Manager that Barlovento has ever had. I highly recommend this hotel.

My room was comfortable and I slept like a baby. Entertainment was great especially the Water Ballet. But by far the Staff made my stay. I would like to mention a few and please Juan Jose give special acknowledgement to a few of your staff that are particularly excellent.. they deserve it, they work hard! “Awesome experience!”
I loved this hotel. It's not the most fancy hotel I've been to but for what you pay, it's awesome! The beach is one of the best I've ever seen! Stunning! The hotel is small so you get familiar with the staff and every single one of them treated us like royalty! The restaurants are always accessible (unlike some larger all inclusives I've bee to), the bars are never overly lined up, you can always get a beach chair - I have no complaints. The location is great too. The more expensive hotels are at the end of Varadero and you must take a taxi to town. Barlevento is exactly where you want to be if you are interested in getting out of the resort and seeing local restaurants, flee markets and local culture. I always felt safe there (in the town) - even late at night. The food in the buffet was sub par but ... Late at night they will custom make you anything they can and the Cuban a la carte is awesome. Also, there is a great pizza restaurant and 2 other great locally opened restaurants less than a block away. I can't wait to go back!

“wonderful holiday, amazing hotel :) ”
We traveled as a couple, May the 16th-24th. Only first day for few hours was raining and then lovely weather all the time, hot, hot, hot. The positives: Location is perfect, so close to everything: restaurants, bars, flea markets , you can walk into town and usually you r the last one to pick up and first one to drop off. Only 20 mins drive form the airport. Hotel wasn't crowded, there was no long cues for food. Hotel itself was huge plus big garden with 2 big swimming pools and 2 small ones and beach bar. Lobby bar open 24 h. No problem with finding free sunbeds. Beach beautiful, clean sand, crystal, warm water and not very deep. You could walk 16 km along the beach. Staff, you can't do any better, housemaid, bartenders, waiters, reception just perfect. And I just must say big thank you to all staff, you made our stay in Barlovento perfect. Room no 360 nice and quite, facing garden. Very clean and light what i like. Food very tasty maybe bit repetitive but plenty to choose. You have to consider this is Cuba, they have very limited option, so with what they got, they do amazing job. Drinks also tasty and lot to choose. Entertainment also good, every evening something else, magician, water aerobic etc. The negatives Hotel is bit dated, needs refurbishment. Also I think the person who is the manager totally ignored us, not even a smile or hello. As much staff was the best you can get, the manager is bit of a let down. Overall we had brilliant time. If we were going to Cuba again we would go back to this Hotel. Few advise If you can bring some staff for Cuban people. Clothes you don't wear any more, seasoning, shower gel, shampoo etc. They really appreciate this. Also tip if you can. They earn so little and try their best to make you happy even if you don't tip.

“2nd visit to Barlovento and would like to see some changes . ”
Met the new manager "Juan" as we were signing in. Very nice gentleman. As it turned out he ended up saving us having to pay for 2 beach towels. Some advice which probably applies to all the hotels in Cuba, "don't leave any personal belongings around the pool or on the beach chairs overnite." In very occcasions you will be lucky to ever see them again. We lost 2 hotel beach towels left on a pool lounge overnight. We were told we would have to pay for them. A few nites later we left our own beach towels which we brought with us and a pair of sandals, a small sponge football and a personalized water bottle on a pool chair overnite. Next morning, gone, and no-one knew where the cleanup staff may have put them. Not even the cleanup staff. Weird. They need a lost and found. The rest of our stay was perfect, well except for the food. But that's Cuba for you. Juan, if you are reading this, I sure would like to see some fried chicken and french fries on the menu at the main buffet everyday. Also some Hamburgers on the menu occasionally would suit me fine. I really had a hard time finding something appetizing on the menu even at breakfast. The bacon is the worst I've ever seen. I like it crispy. It was dripping in grease and didn't even look cooked. The scrambled eggs were floating in water for some weird reason. The food really needs a good going over here. My bed was very hard and uncomfortable and the pillows very thin. Did not get a good nites sleep for a whole week. My girlfriend also complained about this. Other than that, we really enjoyed the hotel main entrance coffee shop and bar where we met lots of very nice people and exchanged emails with them. We loved the pool area, the fantastic beach with great drinks from the beach bar, and the nightly entertainment. Always great shows put on by hard working entertainment staff especially Legla and Regla. Two awesome girls that deserve a big pat on the back from management "Juan" for the great job they do. Also, our room maid was awesome as well as the majority of the staff we met. All very friendly and a big smile. We also took a day trip to Havana ($80 total for both of us). We booked it right at the hotel. They drop you off and you have about 6 hours to do your own thing, then pick you up and bring you back. We took a variety of travel methods to tour Havana, Horse and buggy, Coco taxi and had a blast. We ended up getting the only 3 geocaches in the huge city. We recommend it. I love this hotel for the location and the size and will definately be back. My girlfriend said that all the bathrooms she visited had a combination of no paper, no toilet seats, and no doors on stalls. Something that should be addressed by management. We hope to see some positive changes for the better in all the areas I mentioned before our next visit. But make no mistake, we will be back.

      “What a Great Return!!!!!!!! ”
So, what can I say about this place that I have not already? This place is wonderful and the staffs are the best! Osmany, to see the smile on your face was worth the trip in itself! Check in was a breeze as they were expecting us. I was off to ?my room? Room 326. The room looks out over the tennis court with a king sized bed. Mike stayed in 319 looking out over the pool with 2 double beds. This trip I was more than a bit off for personal reasons, but I found myself enjoying things never the less. On the third day (after a day of back and forth with Osmany and the repair team) I had no choice but to change rooms. The condenser in my ac was leaking onto the floor in the room. The drain had plugged up somewhere and the puddles were getting bad in the morning! The following afternoon I was switched to 303. A bit of a bother, but really if they can?t fix the problem you need to be flexible! This is Cuba after all, and if you are kind I assure you the staff is trying their best to work with what they have! It was nice to see some improvements since my last visit including replacement of the wooden walkways and some new paint on the exterior. The manager was excitedly telling me that they has recently been approved for funding to improve 48 rooms. Everything in my second room was excellent. The bed was more than adequate and I have learned to throw in one of my own pillows if I have room. The safe costs you 2 pesos a day and is well worth it for peace of mind. The ac was ice cold and without leaks and the CRT television had at least 2 English channels LOL Amenities Well, the amenities at this resort are hit and miss. In the past the buffet was excellent. This was not the case this trip. I can honestly say I only ate Breakfast twice (because I was usually asleep until well after they stopped serving ha ha ha ha ha), lunch twice, and diner never on the buffet. The food quality has decreased drastically since my last visit, though the menu remains the same. My biggest complaint would be no flavour, but hey, es Cuba! Instead I would and did (3 times I think) walk to Kiki?s for lunch and or supper. I had a meal or 2 across the street at Castel Nuovo, and maybe 1 or 2 in Josonee Park. We may have visited Lai Lai too. You need to visit all of the mentioned places! The a la cartes at the resort are as expected! The Italian was bland, the Mexican (and Ramon) was great! I enjoyed my night at the Italian with Yanik le Gaspesie, Annie, Margot and Michel de Montréal! I have heard people rave about the messages offered at the beach though have never partaken myself. There are Hobby Cats and Kyacks available at the beach for use. A store and internet café are also available on the resort. There is also a well kept Tennis Court, 3 Bars, full time Customer Relations Lady named Kadia as well as Entertainment every night. Entertainment As always was great, and professional. There were dancers 4 of 7 nights, a magician one night, an audience participation show one night and an aquatic ballet the other. The animation staff is always working long and hard to ensure the guests are having a great time. There are games starting on the beach as early as 10h30 and around 16h at the pool side. I do have to say the attitude of Hanoy has improved drastically! He was quite the pleasure this trip and perhaps I have misjudged him in the past??? The dancers are amazing and the crew still has some of the originals (as I know them!). Beach What is there to say?it?s Varadero, amongst the top 5 beaches in the world? White sand and you can walk for miles! Staff What a great group of people! Sergio, Yoarky and Ceasar at the Lobby Bar in the evening were amazing! They kept us full and laughing at every turn. They are both wonderful gentlemen and I really enjoy chatting with them! Lazerus, Joseph, Willie and Greta through the day were wonderful smiles to great a heartbroken and hung over morning! Of course I couldn`t forget Theo and Hilda at the Entertainment bar. These 2 folks are amongst the best staff on the resort. They are happy, and warm. They remember what you want and are more than happy to serve it to you! A special mention needs to be given to La China at the Beach Bar `That was Easy ??, Jackie who seems to be everywhere and Ramon at the Mexican a la carte! As I mentioned him before; Osmany is the best. This is your go to guy at this resort; I?m not sure it would function without him! If you need anything at all a kind approach to any of these people will go a long way! Show them the respect you want in return and they are happy to help! An Hola, smile and please/thank you will carry you further then a peso in this country! Location This is another huge selling feature of this place! The beautiful Varadero beach is in your backyard and the town is in your front yard. Here you are minutes from Kikis, Castel Nuovo, Club Villa Tortuga, Club Kawama, Al Capones House, El Rancon Bellemar (great, reasonably priced Longosta), El Sangria, Casa del Chef, the Artisan Market, Aquazul, Islazul and Club Tropical. Only a 5+ (depending on your bartering and the time of year) coco or cab ride to the clubs?.Calle 62, La Comprisita, Havana Club, and the Beatles Bar, a 10- cab ride to International, Mumbo Club and La Rumba. A must see is Josonee Park (and take the time to have some supper and wine at one of the lovely restaurants) . Varadero really is a wonderful place to visit with so much great food and entertainment! Overall Food has changed and not for the better. That being said I enjoy dining off the resort so much that I do not mind another 200 CUC for food, and entertainment in a week! The staff are what sold me on this place the first time and are what will keep me coming back! I was very sad to learn that a wonderful Manager Juan Fernandez had died very suddenly of a heart attack. He was a great manager and friend. I wish I had of known, I probably would have flown in for the service! That being said the new manager seems to be very enthusiastic and approachable as well. I am looking forward to developing a relationship with him in the future! He does need to work on the quality of food. If you are looking for Cuban charm, reasonable rooms with adequate ac and comfortable yet hard beds, hot water all the time and most importantly caring and hygienic Chamber Maids (Magdlys was the best!!!!!!). Great Breakfast and you will always find something for lunch on the buffet. The a la cartes are the place to be for supper (book the first thru Kadia and then talk to Ramon ?), or enjoying something off resort. Food is more than reasonably priced?Kikis for example I get a 12`` Veggie pizza, a beer and a tip for 6 pesos. A great pool with lots of chairs and a breathtaking beach with ample loungers and palapas, and close to the action with a laid back home atmosphere then the ROC Barlovento is the place to be. I have been to many places in Cuba, Varadero specifically and I will always come back to the Roc! Looking forward to a visit sometime in the next 6 months?so many places to go, so little time! I?m sure there is a lot I have taken for granted at this resort and as such have not included in my review. If you have ANY question please do not be afraid to ask!

Our second time at the Barlovento and certainly not our last. Everyone seems to have their own opinion about Cuba, the food, people, etc. For us we know what to expect and for our second time had one of our best vacations ever. The resort is comfortable and easy to find what you need. Was great was getting off the resort and explore Varadero, enjoy lobster meals a bit of shopping and most of all the warm weather. The beach and aqua blue ocean is second to none and is the jewel of the resort. Special thanks to our buddies on the resort Miguel, Gretal, Jarone, Ramone, Yuni , Iris and our maid Mily the wonderful service. Can't wait to see you again, probably sooner than later.

The Barlovento Hotel, in the world-famous coastal resort of Varadero, Cuba's main beach, is very close to downtown. Built on the beach, in an excellent zone, and surrounded by restaurants and places of tourist interest, the establishment is 34 kilometers away from Juan Gualberto Gómez International Airport. The hotel, which features a colonial architectural style that combines gardens, restaurants and galleries, is considered an excellent place for couples and families.

There are three pools at the resort. The two near the lobby are the busiest....as well as the noisiest. The music and entertainment team are always there. If you like the involvement then that is your spot. The kids pool is next to it. There were a few small ones enjoying it. When it is windy on the beach this pool is more sheltered so not as cool. The pools were always being cleaned. The one night the aqua ballet was done in the larger pool...they are really amazing artists. There were always enough chairs by the pools...never saw the towel game played.

The beach is beautiful...what we go to Varadero for! There are too few beach loungers so get there earlier in the morning....9ish is fine. Coming at 11 you are not likely to get a chair. They do need to invest in a few new ones. Beach bar was a fun place with one of the nicest bartenders I have ever met. She is always smiling and happy....even when it was a little cool and windy. They don’t have beer at the beach but she can come up with something for you. There are hobi cats, kayaks and paddle boats to take out. The water doesn’t get deep fast but is not too shallow either...perfect for everyone...my grand daughter loved jumping into the waves.

Great trip for a week. The hotel is really good and clean. Cuban food is very good but quite different from Canadian food. If you want Canadian food, better to stay in Canada. The staff is very friendly, 80% of the guests are French. We went for a safari in jeep (great). Good gifts to bring for the staff is nail polish, lipstick, makeup, perfumes. We like the vacations so much we are sure to return. From the hotel to the city is only 5 minutes. Great.

      Very Very Nice
I've been to cuba 3 times , in different resorts every time... Barlovento was the smallest , rated the lowest , but surprisingly it was the best resort of all by far. Very clean, excelent staff and service, and the best location. The food was as good as any of the other resorts....but the location is perfect for walking the town at night and trying outside restaurants. I recommend this resort to anyone and will return next time I go to varadero. Not sure how the resorts are rated exactly but this one is totally under rated. It deserves a much better rating. Cleanliness is key , and most places are lacking that, even the 5 star places. The staff here was unbelievably friendly , where other resorts they were overworked and grumpy to people.

      Nice
I am just returning for the second time in 2008 from the Barlovento in Varadero, Cuba and I have nothing but rave reviews of the staff and the hotel! This hotel is clean and attractive but the staff is the shining star for sure! The first trip in February 2008, I was accompanied by 4 of my girlfriends and we had such a wonderful time! We enjoyed all of the staff who are very warm and friendly and incredibly helpful - I have nothing but the deepest respect for all of the staff here. I loved it so much, that I returned for a second trip in March 2008 and this time I travelled with my teenage daughter. We were both amazed at how helpful, friendly and inviting the staff are at this hotel! Particularly the Animacion staff of Yovani, Alberto, Leticia, Regla, Alex, Legna and Dinorah - we were awed by how incredibly accomodating this staff was to us! We love them all and we would love to thank each of them personally for making our vacation incredible! The food at the Barlovento is better than most other foods we ate in both of my trips to Varadaro (we did try some local cuisine to compare to it and it certainly doesn't compare). Food is not a huge factor for Cuba overall as we discovered on a day trip to La Habana as well - it's either very bland or very salty (to be fair, I am a chef and restaurant owner myself, so I can be a bit of a critic). At the Barlovento, however, the Mexican restaurant called El Cactus, the food was always well above par - and the staff of Ramone, Mango aka Junio, and Yanet went above and beyond the call of duty! The beach grill for lunch was always excellent with Chef Luis being exceptionally helpful and pleasant. The Creole restaurant was very tasty and for those travelling as a couple, this restaurant is also very romantic. The buffet hacienda restaurant was so/so but if you choose wisely, the omelettes are made a la minute and are always very tasty (I would recommend bringing ketchup from outside Cuba for ketchup conneseiurs, lol) We encountered many servers during my two trips to the Barlovento but shining above them all was Annabel who I made efforts to find and have her serve us during our stays -- what a lovely person! Thank you Annabel!! Muuaahh! There are 4 bars at the Barlovento with rotating staff but I would really like to thank Teo, Josehp, Hilda, Miquel, Jaquelin, Gretel, Javier, Joel, Pelly, Leo and last but not least, La China for making both my trip in Feb and my trip in March amazing! They were incredibly welcoming and, not only did they remember me, but they went out of their way to make each and every day special for me/us! Thank you, my Barlovento/Cuba friends and we wish God's blessings on you forever! You have created wonderful memories for us that we will treasure always!!!! I hope that you will make sure to thank your staff personally for me and I will definitely return many times to the Barlovento!

      Good
Our room was great. We were in a bungalow just down from the beach, across from the out door lunch buffet and the quiet pool. The room was smaller than our friend’s but our balcony was huge. The room had a fridge that was stocked with bottled water every day so we never had to buy it. The maid service was very good too....no too many fancy sculptures on the bed but that’s ok as long as the room is clean.

      Perfect location
This hotel is at the edge of the town so is a perfect location. You can walk to the flea markets and restaurants in town. If you need a taxi the most we paid to get to the other end of town was $6. I would go back to this resort in a second and would recommend it to anyone. We loved it!
