Juan Gualberto Gomez Airport was built in 1989 and inaugurated by Fidel Castro,[3] thus replacing the old Varadero airport located in Santa Marta, currently known as Kawama Airport. The airport was named after a journalist, fighter for the Cuban Independence and black rights activist in Cuba Juan Gualberto Gómez (1854–1933). The terminal building has shops for tourists (including rum, cigars, T-shirts, books, carvings, pharmaceuticals), a large departures lounge cafeterias and a VIP lounge. A VIP card is available by paying $30/person to the local tour company representative. This allows the departing passenger to bypass the queues for check-in, have an agent take your departure tax to the correct official for you, and bypass any lines for passport control. The passenger is then taken to the VIP lounge which provides free food and drink (including alcoholic beverages).[4] The ground handling equipment is imported mainly from North America. There are four jet bridges, but air stairs are used for the remaining aircraft parking spaces on the apron by the terminal. Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport (IATA: VRA, ICAO: MUVR), formerly known as Varadero Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto de Varadero), is an international airport serving Varadero, Cuba and the province of Matanzas. The airport is located closer to the city of Matanzas than to Varadero. The closest airport to Varadero is Kawama Airport. In 2009, the airport handled 1.28 million passengers,[2] making it the second busiest airport in Cuba after José Martí International Airport in Havana.

        “Overall a good experience”
Just came back from Varadero last week, first time in Cuba. Overall, our experience was good. Here are the details: -the room: my wonderful boyfriend had gotten us an upgrade to a Junior suite in block 20. This, in my opinion, is THE place to be at the Iberostar Varadero. You basically have a private pool, are right in front of the spa and gym and away from the noise of annoying entertainment at the pool, super close to everything, PERFECT. The room was spacious, very clean, big king size bed, super comfortable pillows, balcony, nice view, very quiet :-) -the spa: we got mani pedis early on with Onaysi, she was very friendly and did a great job, we highly recommend her. The staff at the spa was very nice, we tried to book a couple's massage but could not get in, they should extend their operating hours, -the grounds are beautiful, well manicured, the pools are very clean and perfect temperature. The bathrooms are not always up to 5 star standards, sadly. The front receptionists were not very friendly or helpful, even though we both speak fluent Spanish. The doctor, on the other hand, was extremely kind and took very good care of my bf who suffered from an ear infection. -the food, I must admit, was not good. We are not huge eaters, so we value quality over quantity and we were quite disappointed. The main criticism is blandness, but also the fact that the vegetables obviously came from a can (honestly, with such a huge country and so much agricultural land, why not diversify their crops and grow fruit and veggies? Beats me). Even eggs and cereal were tasteless. We tried one of the a la carte restaurant and it was disappointing as well. We went out to Varadero one night and had a beautiful dinner with beef, fish and lobster, sad that you have to leave the hotel to get good quality food. We liked the lobby bar the best, the staff was very friendly and drinks were good, nobody expected a tip, which was really refreshing. -the beach: yes it was shorter than the other hotels, but it is gorgeous, plenty of chairs available, beautiful warm water, great to walk on, very safe. -we booked a trip to Havana, it is really worth it, you get to see the real Cuba, Havana is beautiful, rich in history (though you need to filter thru what the guides tell you as it is obviously biased). The constant hassle from vendors is irritating, turned us off buying souvenirs in Havana. On a side note, we walked into the Iberostar Parque Central, looks beautiful, wished we had booked an overnight stay there to have more time to explore the city and absorb the culture. Overall we had very relaxing, interesting experience in Cuba. I do think the Iberostar Varadero is one of the better hotels in Varadero and if I were to go back, I would stay there again, Hoping they would work on their culinary skills ;-)

My first time in Cuba , for a destination wedding . Everything in Cuba is based on TIPS . From the time you land , bus transfer ( Canadian dollars ) , Cristal beer on the bus , 2 for $ 5 Canadian , Bus driver and tour rep. $ 10 Canadian dollars . It seems , the best place to change Canadian dollars for Cuban convertible pesos (CUC's ) is at the airport, when you arrive and are waiting for your bus transfer . At the resort , Iberostar Varadero Cuba , the exchange rate was 81 CUC , for 100.00 Canadian dollars . The USA $ was 87 CUC. We booked two trips via Sunwing reps . First was for a catamaran snorkelling cruise for 69 CUC each, don't bother , absolute rubbish , more of a booze cruise , most persons on board were drunk. The second was a day trip into Hanana , which was absolutely brilliant. We went into a cigar factory retail shop in an old Fort to buy genuine Cuban cigars . All very fancy , locked key entry only , AC and humidors ? . I bought some 5 packs in plastic . Buying cigars in Cuba to resell at your home country is precarious at best. Buyer beware .

        “Important issues ”
The reception I found could manage English fine and check in was ok and unremarkable. The buffet was fantastic, generally everywhere on tipping the staff were animated and smiling, however staff not knowing you tipped were mediocre and a few occasions ignored. Generally the forward facing staff interacting with guests where white or fairer skinned and I wonder if there is an element of conscious placement, I would have liked to have tipped some of the behind the scenes staff who probably work harder, I don't think tipping individual people works in cuba and it isn't fair and it should be put in a pot and divvied up. The beach layout isn't the best although you can walk the whole of the very long beach front, but there is a problem with sand flies I feel because of the beach layout as there is a 4 metre raised bed that encourages sand flies that are vicious if you have bare legs avoiding dusk and dawn and putting feet down whilst laying on the sun loungers during day time. be prepared with antihistamines. The swimming pool is nice but very noisy and would have been nice to have had a separate adult pool away from the noise. The life guards and beach staff are too preoccupied with trying to sell you cigars and this should not be happening. Personally the beach at tryp peninsula and Blau marina are much better and I have never had Sand flies bite me to smithereens. The staff in the hotel shop are miserable, especially the older woman in the cigar shop, the gift are overpriced to the point it is amusing. The hotel has a problem ensuring you have bathroom shower gel, bath gel and cream and having filter coffee in your your room. Though it seems no problem with decaf. The manager of the restaurants was helpful with a small complaint and went out of her way to ensure I wasn't having any problems. the car hire was a lot to be desired where I couldn't get the car I wanted, the car hire rep seemed lazy and not proactive and I was given a dirty car that had scratches and defective in some areas, I don't like being told well this is cuba because that is not acceptable as Cuban business partners are European and if you want to say this then provide refunds or other compensation. In leaving at the airport the immigration staff leaned back and did not beckon passengers to be processed and then had 4 metal detectors of which only one was being used. Word of warning, on transfers from havana to varadero the coach stops at a bar, this is a classic tourist trap where you will be ripped off without a smile. Ensure you as a tourist ask for prices and exhange rates beforehand, if you hire a car just know the fuel cost the same everywhere. Change money up at the airport not at the hotel or go to the cash point in plaza America varadero where you will get a better exchange rate as it is charged in US dollars on a 1:1 whereas the hotel do a Cuc to sterling 1.4:1 conversion, so example $60 x 0.63 = £37.80 compared to £37.80 x 1.40 Cuc = 52.92 Cuc thus 7.08 Cuc better off which is significant **** note there is a cash point at the airport ****

“Great beach, wonderful staff and lots of entertainment. ”
This is my first visit to Cuba and I was worried that I would not enjoy it. Several friends had had bad experiences with food and entertainment, many saying they will not return to Cuba. All I can say is they should have stayed at the Iberostar Varadaro. There is a beautiful beach, the rooms clean and comfortable and a great variety of entertainment all day and evening. The buffet food is good and the staff very friendly. The only serious area for improvement would be that the front desk staff speak poor english and twice we did not receive a wake up call when requested. If we had not woke early (before 6 am) on both days, we would have missed our trip to Havana and our return flight home. Good value for the price.

“Another great trip to he Iberostar Varadero”
We stayed at the Iberostar Varadero the last 2 weeks of October. This is definitely one of the best hotels in Cuba. While we usually have good to great service in Cuba this place is exceptional, from the a la cartes, the buffet restaurant, both beach bars, the lobby bar and the maid service. Valeria, the food & beverage manager was particularly helpful. Food: Very good. A wide verity of food including fresh salads, fruit, hot & cold buffet items which varied daily. My wife tells me that the deserts were great. I did not care for the pre made burgers at the beach grill. The Japanese was our favourite a la carte. Bars: Service at all the bars cannot be faulted. If you requested a personalized drink ( something unusual & not on the menu ) they usually got it right. Too bad they did't have any Canadian whiskey which I know is hit or miss in Cuba. Common Areas: Although the resort was at capacity none of the common areas felt crowded. There were always palapas available at the pool and beach. Always tables available in the buffet. Typically the lobby was busiest in the evening before the show but you still did not have to wait for drinks. Beach: Beautiful beach but it is short at the middle of the property, otherwise it is fine. Check in: They have a streamline check in procedure. The check in sheet was printed with our info, the desk clerk entered our passport numbers and we signed in, easy. Rooms: The only problem with the room was the air-conditioning, it worked but a little too hard. The first night I set the thermostat at 23C which we find comfortable for sleeping, we woke up at 3:00 AM absolutely freezing, it was 20C and still cooling. I talked to the front desk in the morning, they said they someone would check it out. Next night same thing, talked to the front desk, same result. On the third visit to the front desk I asked if there was a technician who spoke English, she made a phone call and told me that they would set the temperature at 23C on the computer, not in the room. That tells me that have integrated energy management system on the AC. They set the temperature at 23C but on the unoccupied mode, they did not change the temperature on the occupied mode. There is a sensor in the room which tells the computer when the room is occupied. When we entered the room at night for bed the computer went into occupied mote and slowing brought the temperature to 20C. Hopefully they can find a software engineer who can sort out this problem. This is strictly a programming issue.

        “Beautiful resort ”
The resort is very well maintained. Rooms, lobby, pool and grounds are cleaned all the time. The private beach is also kept very clean and is free from people selling. We had a few people approach but they know they're not supposed to be there so they don't hassle you too long, plus Cubans are mostly very polite. The food is very average. There is not much salad or 'healthy' food. We only stayed for 4 days so it would be difficult to stay longer unless you went out to eat. I wouldn't waste my time with the Cuban or Japanese restaurant as they food is very average and they throw away so much food - so sad when so many people especially in Cuba line up for their rations. Overall I understand North American tourists love their all-inclusive style resorts but it's so sad to see so much wasted food when so many Cubans have limited food. It's probably for this reason that the staff in charge of the food areas look at you with disgust as you are serving your food. Watch out for the in-room safe - you have pay a daily rate to use this (which we weren't told when we checked-in - although after we called and went down to pay we were very rudely told that there was no way the check-in staff forgot to tell us about the safe fee) we weren't even complaining about paying but there is overall aggression from the staff, again probably because they stereotype all guests as being the ones that are very wasteful of the all-inclusive opportunities. The entertainment staff try their hardest to keep guests entertained. Some tourists like this although they are constantly looking for their tip which is exhausting by day 2. The variety shows in the evening are very corny and you have a good laugh but I guess it was free so can't complain as you are not forced to watch. Air-conditioning in the room was perfect and the room had an amazing view. The beds are not so comfortable as they are very old but the free mini bar is great and is stocked without having to ask. Towels were always replenished too. Never any problems there. We have to say an amazing thank you to the concierge who helped us with our luggage on arrival and also on departure. We forget his name but he is an amazing Cuban and a lovely gentleman. We didn't have any problems with mosquitos or sand flies but being Australians we always have our repellent. Please people, use repellent when in tropical areas otherwise you will get bitten and it's not the resorts fault!!!

        “Not sure ? ”
This was our 4th time to Cuba, 1st time here. Reception staff needs work on check in crowds. They have no organization for the visitors that are checking in. They tend to pick whom ever catches there eye first? We had requested a adult only section when we booked this resort and were given a room by the kiddy pool. Had resort manager step in and said that the resort was all adult only. He said he would take care of it an moved use two buildings down. Got a room with two dbl beds on ground floor and reaked of mould.. Complained to him again, and was told it was the smell of new furniture. After taking pics and video of mould and re addressing the issue to no result from him. Went back to front desk the next am ( to tiered to argue any more, and here his lies) showed my paper work on what paid for and was given proper room ( not in adult section ) , didn't care at this point. Internet is 5/hr, but was told 8 then ten by two different front destroy girls. Got it for the 5 it was listed at. Other than these issues the resort is very clean, and well kept. The house keeping staff are AWSOME. The food staff, bar staff, and beach people are wonderful . I do recommend this place, even with the issues we encountered. I will forward my information pics and video to there head office to address the mould issues.

        “mixed feeligs ”
We visited this resort for the 4th time at the end of October. It is still a wonderful resort in many ways but some things have changed. The majority of staff have excellent customer service skills and a friendly, welcoming manner. Others are only working for the tips. This is a real shame as it bring the reputation of this hotel down a notch. The first time we noticed this was at breakfast one morning, there were several staff stood round chatting and ignoring breakfast goers, these people then had to go and ask for coffee to be served to them. I do not have a problem with self service and would quite willingly get my own coffee, but when you know it is served at your table you should never need to ask. My biggest problem is the lack of enforcment over dress codes. There were several people being allowed in the main restaurant at lunch time with wet swimwear on. This is totally unacceptable and should not be allowed. We actually fell victim to this one evening, my husband and I after dressing for dinner went to the lobby bar for a drink. We found a table and sat down after ordering our drinks, within a couple of minutes we were both very wet from the seat cushions to which we both had to go back to the room and change. We mentioned this to one of the bar staff who moved the chairs only for them to be returned as we were leaving. We complained to the restaurant manager at dinner that evening and she replied with there is not much we can do about this , people just dont take any notice of the information they are given at check in. Surely staff can enforce these rules, a quiet word when they see this happenning would soon put a stop to it. On a different note, I did celebrate my birthday while we were here and the hotel made me feel very special. Our room was decorated with banners and balloons and they left us a bottle of cava to share. Thank you for the lovely gesture. Will we return, yes probably as Cuba is an amazing place.

We enjoyed our stay at this hotel fore mostly due to the excellent service received by the members of staff. We were always greeted with warm smiles & genuine eagerness to help. Our standard room was good sized with all the amenities we needed, including a converter plug. As a five star rated hotel we were very much surprised that we had to pay for internet access & it was only available in the Lobby. For this reason I would only give it 4*

“First class hotel complex first class service and facilities. ”
First the reason for only four stars - Iberostar's insistence on the antiquated idea of charging five star visitors for internet access. A charge of 5 CUC for an hours access about £4.75. I have no doubt there will be a reply by the manager. My argument is at board level. This petty penny pinching attitude shows a very out of date way of looking at the modern world. I would urge holiday makers to check your hotels policy on WI FI and make this part of your choice. That said this is an excellent hotel with first rate staff. Good food good service and in an idillic location.Iberostar nice try but no cigar.

“Great first time in Cuba! ”
When we got to the resort around noon as excepted the room was not ready. We were told that around 3 pm the room would be ready. We took are chances a couple hours later and our luggage had already been delivered to your room in block 19 3rd floor. We were greeted by our maid who told us that she would be the only one looking after our room and if we needed anything to just ask. She was very nice and did a great job and we tip tip her well! The view in our room was ok, but who cares for the time you spend there. Food/ restaurants- the food overall was pretty good. Better then I excepted. Our only complaint was the selection in buffet it was the pretty much the same thing every day for breakfast and dinner. The 3 restaurants were good as well. The Mediterranean restaurant was our favourite. Pool/beach- we spent most of our time at the beach. It was beautiful beach with aqua blue water. They had a bar and BBQ at the beach and someone walking the beach offering drinks. This beach was a nice change from other places we have been where you don't get harassed to buy things. The pool was nice but busy, we only went near end of day to join in on fun around pool. Before and after dinner we spent time in lobby bar before the nightly show would start. The staff at lobby bar were very nice and tried there best serve you as fast as they could, this bar gets very busy in the evenings and is the place to be to enjoy a cocktail after a relaxing day in the sun. The shows were entertaining and a good way end evening. We took a private tour to Havana, and at first we're not sure what expect, but in the end we were glad we did as the guide was very nice and took us to different places around old and new Havana that wasn't packed with tour buses. We would highly recommend the private tour if you want to learn and see what Havana is really like. It cost us $140 cuc's for 2 people. Overall the resort was very nice and a great experience for our first time in Cuba.

“Great for a beach stay ”
If you want a big all inclusive resort set by clear blue sea and a beautiful sandy beach this will fit the bill very nicely. It's fairly efficient (though could do with more staff on the reception desk) and the waiters are smiling and helpful. Food was good quality with plenty of choice to suit most people. There were always plenty of seats and loungers available, though this was low season. The standard room was large, though no sea view (and all the rooms are separated from the beach by high vegetation so this seems to be true of the vast majority of them). The shower was powerful and warm. We saw dolphins swimming only just offshore on our last day there which always feels special. We didn't really appreciate the animation and entertainment and would have preferred something quieter or more traditionally Cuban - but others seemed to enjoy it. We could still hear it at 10.45 even when we had retreated to our room to get away from the thumping bass! Internet connection is slow. There is wifi ( at 5 cuc per hour) in the lobby but it is painfully erratic. There is no wifi anywhere else in the hotel. We went on a snorkelling trip which was great and also took the hop on, hop off bus into Varadero (bus stop about half a mile from the hotel). Other trips can be arranged if you feel you should want to escape the large pool and the very blue sea!

The beach alone is worth the trip, the crystal clear, azure deliciously warm water, the unlimited cocktails if you have the all inclusive package (get the all inclusive package!). What more could you want? The restaurants are average, and the rooms are nothing fancy, and the nightly shows are woeful. But with that pool, and that beach (and those cocktails) who really cares? If you are a family travelling, this hotel is ideal for you, if like me you like kid free holidays, the kids club is great, they take the kids away leaving all the lounges by the pool for the adults... Bliss.

We went to this hotel early October for our friends wedding it was fantastic there were 16 of us ranging from 7 to 70 The entertainment was really good I have been to Cuba before and the entertainment was poor but the entertainment team at this hotel are very good there were loads of activities during the day and the shows on an evening were very good the reviews I read about the food had me a bit worried but there was plenty of variety each meal one evening there were 24 different main courses to choose from as well as salad chips and other food then there was always a good amount of desserts really I could not see how anyone could complain but some people can't help it all in all it was a memorable holiday and I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to have a good time

        “Excellent resort vacation ”
This is one of the best all-inclusive resorts I've been to. Friendly and kind staff, beautifully kept grounds, convenient money exchange, fairly priced shops, great food and drink, excellent beach and pool, very clean facilities, salsa class and water aerobics, I can't find a fault with this resort. I had so much fun with my three girlfriends for 10 days here. Our room had a nice balcony and was very comfortable with a coffee machine and fully stocked fridge. The housekeepers were exceptional and always left us a fun towel sculpture and provided extra water when requested. I enjoyed being able to get breakfast at the poolside cafe after the main buffet closed at 10am and the coffee and food were great. The Japanese restaurant was a lot of fun. There are a few Iberostar hotels in Varadero so we had to pay close attention for our stop when taking the bus back from town.

“Service was the highlight of the stay! ”
We stayed here for 6 nights and had a fantastic time. The people were just amazing- from the bar and restaurant staff to the entertainment team and our room cleaner- everyone went to a huge amount of effort to look after us. We are vegetarian and the chefs making food at the live stations in the buffet area always made us something we could have (and there were enough choices in the buffet itself anyway!). I should also say that the food in Cuba is generally not very varied or spiced but the food in this hotel was much better than what we had in Havana. There is entertainment and activities every 30 mins so you can take part in a range of things. The rooms were a great size (we stayed in a standard) and kept very clean. We had a super kingsize bed which was very comfortable. The other guests ranged from couples to young families, and 1-2 groups of friends. Everyone was very friendly and polite and we didn't need to rush down to the pool early in order to get a deck chair- it was all very friendly. My very slight concerns with the hotel were (1) the entertainment which went on till 11pm or so could be quite loud if your room was near the theatre (which we were) but we always managed to get to sleep and sleep well. (2) Nothing the hotel can improve- but the beach outside the hotel was very narrow, at least during this time of year. There were still plenty of deck chairs and space to sit but it wasn't a long rolling white sand beach we expected. All in all I'd say I've never had such amazing service in any hotel I've stayed in (and I've travelled a fair amount) and just for that, I would go there again. Thanks for an absoluetly brilliant first stay in the Caribbean.

Visited this wonderful resort in early October with my wife and 1 year old son along with 10 other friends. Resort was kept in immaculate condition and we were very pleased with the service in our rooms and especially at lunch/dinner. The staff had a table prepared for our big group for the entire week!. The food was definetly above what people had described about Cuba, the Mediterranean restaurant was hands down the best. The nightly shows were also very good, definetly the most entertaining from all my Caribbean visits. Beach was the best! Clear blue waters and hardly any rocks! We would definetly come back to Iberostar Varadero!!

We just got back from an excellent week at this resort. We were a little nervous as to what we were going to get into going to Cuba with 2 boys (8,9) but all I can say is that I would go back to this resort anytime. Check in was quick and efficient, and our room was spacious and clean. Thanks to Maribel who went out of her way to have unique towel art each night and to go so far as to leave little Cuban tokens for our two boys to take back to Canada with them. All of the staff went out of their way to make you feel welcome and quickly learned your name and likes. Beach was beautiful and the pool was great. The buffet was great and had all types of food, and the beach bar had burgers and hot dogs which we all liked for a change and the Pool buffet was really good for brunch and the coffee was fantastic. Would definitely return to this resort. Mucho Gracias

        “Cuban adventure part 2 ”
Stayed at Iberostar Varadero in June 2014 as second part of a 2 centre trip to Cuba. Spent 8 days here after 3 days in Havana. This hotel certainly has the wow factor on arrival. The reception area is open plan with a central fountain leading off to the lobby bar and outside pool area. Reception were prompt dealing with our registration and I did see larger groups being greeted with a cool drink during registration which was a nice touch to distract from any delay. Our accommodation was on the top (3rd) floor of a block near the beach. Grounds are landscaped so if you're not closest to the beach it isn't too far or unpleasant to walk unless you have mobility issues. Pool complex beautiful but very popular with noisy family groups and entertainment. Beach was peaceful and stunning with waiter/ waitress service. Buffet restaurant large and could be noisy at times but the variety of food was amazing and quality good. The Japanese restaurant was entertaining but their idea of fine dining is a bit unusual and to be honest the buffet was better than the fine dining restaurant. Free canoes and other water activities on the beach. Entertainment every evening if that's your thing but Varadero "town" quite a distance away so we didn't make it to a rock bar friends had recommended. An excellent place to chill.

Wine was good to and the boys had plentiful beer to keep them happy. One of the better all included holidays we have been to. One niggle is the buggies are a little load as they dart around the complex.

“Friendliest staff in the world. ”
Wow, what an amazing holiday we had here. Two weeks of being pampered by what must be the friendliest staff in the whole wide world. From the moment we checked in right through until check out they were awesome. Talk about wanting to ensure we had everything we wanted yet they weren't pushy like you get in some hotels. The hotel itself was pretty awesome too. Great rooms, perfect air conditioning, nice comfy bed and good amenities. Housekeeping were great with the towels done up in different designs each day. Only downside would be that there was only a coffee maker which was useless when it came to wanting a cup of tea/coffee as it would not boil the water!! In fact only place to get a decent cuppa was in the bar or the pool side restaurant as in the buffet restaurant the water being used for coffee/tea was yucky! Restaurants were good with the main buffet one having plenty of choice although over a longer stay it was getting quite repetative. Three a la carte restaurants to chose from with the Japanese by far and away the best, Meat in the other two was tough as hell which was really quite disappointing. Plenty of poolside activities along with a few on the beach. Loads of deckchairs on both sides and although there are notices about not being allowed to reserve them this did not seem to stop people doing so without anyone saying anything. Overall a great stay and cannot praise the staff enough. They made the holiday so much more than just another hotel in the sun... Will certainly go back and cannot recommend it highly enough.

This was our 1st trip to cuba & we werent really sure what to expect, having spent 3 nights in Havana which was very good, we traveled to varadero & we were pleasantly surprised again. The hotel is very pretty & clean. Check in was very quick & friendly. We were in block 12 on the top floor, our maid was called Yeni & she was fantastic, you were never quite sure what surprise towel model you would come home to, & on the day of said birthday she created a figure out of towels & clothes "brilliant". We spent most days at the beach as the sea was just fantastic but the pool was great to. We had heard the food could be bland but have to say you would have to have very poor taste buds if you thought it was, there was plenty of choice every day for breakfast lunch & dinner, the staff looked after us very well especially Elizabeth & reini mara not sure on the spelling but it sounds about right. We did eat at the mediterranean restaurant which we were disappointed with the surf & turf was really over done but the staff were great. See samuel in the lobby bar he looked after us very well, he always had a smile for you & a little chat. Barbara on reception went out of her way to make my birthday night special. All in all a very good holiday, would i go back ABSOLUTELY.

        “8 Visits and Still #1 ”
We returned to this wonderful resort for the 8th time for 3 weeks in October and found it even more remarkable, if that's possible. It is a pity that because Royal Hicacos changed ownership and thus its review status, that the Iberostar is now listed as #2. The other property is still under construction and only has 774 reviews vs. the Iberostar Varadero at over 4,000. Time will no doubt restore the Iberostar to its rightful position. We were welcomed by specially scheduled visit with the highly competent and charming Manager, Francisco Herran. The staff in the buffet, restaurants, bars and activities remembered our names, preferences and there were hugs and kisses all around. The staff is exceptional and provide superior, thoughtful service. Although we visited in the "off season", the food was overabundant, diverse and delicious- no different from high season. We only had to mention our needs to our chambermaid once and she followed through all 21 days! If she had a day off, this would be communicated to her substitute. The gardeners, maintenance and general cleaning staff kept the hotel impeccably groomed in totally unobtrusive ways. The gardeners work especially hard in the high heat and humidity and happily give the guests lovely handcrafted birds with flowers. The Iberostar attracts guests from all corners of the globe and the staff usually speak 5-7 different languages. We watched all the entertainment shows for the first time and were delighted with the fun and capable performances. Our beautifully appointed room overlooked the ocean, but we were also happy with garden views on previous occasions. All the balcony furniture was replaced whilst we were there with modern rattan & cushion designs. The names of the exceptional staff are too many to mention specifically. They make each visit so special. I also received a gorgeous, professional manicure done at the spa with designs that complimented my engagement ring, all for 20 pesos! Senor Herran made a point of meeting us before our departure to say, "farewell". We will return again, hopefully very soon. The property and staff are just amazing and we never are bored by staying at this lovely hotel. Yomarti

        “Very nice resort”
Rooms- Our room was a perfect size for the two of us. Clean and cool which is nice to come back to after a hot day out in the sun. We were on the ground floor in building 11. I would recommend if you want a view then ask for one on a higher floor. It was our first time there so we didn't know to ask for a different area when we booked our vacation. Didn't matter too much since we were not in the room during the day. Resort grounds/buildings- All I have to say is BEAUTIFUL!!!! Love all the open air areas. Everything was very clean and breath taking to look at. Never felt crowded and had lots of seating for everyone. . Food/drinks- Let's just say if you go on vacation for the food and nothing else than Cuba is probably not for you. For everyone else we found the food average but with all I had been told/read it was better than expected. It is just different than what we are use too. I would recommend the Japanese restaurant. Great entertainment and food was perfect. Wide range of beverages to choose from. My favourite was pina colada and my husband could not get enough of the coffee from the cafe. Service- Very friendly and helpful staff. WiFi- If you rely on WiFi for being connected to home than it may be a problem since it didn't always work. It worked fifty percent of the time. Since nothing was of urgency it didn't effect our vacation. Beach/pool- Pool was the nicest pool I have ever swam in. Gives you the infinity look when you are swimming. Lot's of space for everyone. Beach was gorgeous. Great for a long walk on the beach. Plenty of loungers and umbrellas. Beach is a little narrow in spots but from what I understand is that they plan on working on that in the future.

“A Relaxing and Very Friendly Place To Stay ”
We are just back from a very enjoyable 2 week stay at the Iberostar Varadero. I had emailed in advance asking for a room on the top floor with a single king sized bed. Check in was very quick and the receptionist was very friendly and helpful and she was very pleased to tell us we had the room we had asked for and it was in block 18. This block is very well placed for all aspects of the hotel and even though it is close to everything it was not noisy at all. The room was a good size with a very large bed and a good standard bathroom with separate bath and shower. There was an electronic safe, very efficient and quiet air conditioning, ceiling fan and even a large golfing umbrella for getting to the main hotel building if it rained. Our very friendly maid was called Yida and she did a wonderful job keeping the room tidy and spotlessly clean. The main pool is in fact 2 pools with a dividing wall under the bridges. The pool to the pool bar side is ideal for children with a depth starting from zero to 1.15m, the pool to the other side of the bridges is a level depth of 1.4m. There are a large number of loungers around the pool both with and without shade and at this time of year there was never a problem getting one. There is a large buffet restaurant and 3 a la carte restaurants - Mediterranean (our least favourite), International and Japanese Teppanyaki which you can visit once per week. Giving an opinion on food is difficult as it is all down to personal taste but I can say that there was a wide choice of well presented some of which was very good and some not so good but we never went hungry. My only question is who eats cold sprouts for breakfast?? The animacion team worked hard organising the daytime activities but there was no pressure to join in and in the evening there was entertainment every night in the large theatre, we didn?t go to the shows but we could hear it from the lobby bar and some of it was quite good. I have to say that all of the staff we met were very helpful and friendly. Now the beach ? this is where mother nature has taken over and part of the beach has collapsed leaving a bit of a drop in parts. The hotel has a long, narrow stretch of very nice sand and it is just part of the central section where this has happened. There are still plenty of loungers available and access to the sea is not affected so it did not cause any problem what so ever. The sea was very warm with plenty of fish about and the beach was a shell hunters dream. We were certainly not disappointed with this resort and have no hesitation in giving it a 5 star review

        “Honest Opinion ”
When I first reviewed this hotel on Tripadvisor I was disappointed by the critical remarks that were of little relevance to most people looking for genuine advice and reviews and giving low ratings for petty reasons. (I was taking my wife to Cuba for our 30th wedding anniversary). I usually start at the poor ratings to see if there are any "real" concerns and not just peoples whinges. To me complaining is telling the right people and giving them chance to put things right and whinging is telling everyone but the right people and not giving them the chance to put things right. I noticed that when checking out the reviews on Tripadvisor that many of the negative reviews were whinges and these people hadn't responded nor given the hotel chance to put things right. If they had and then voiced the outcome this would have given people a better feel for the hotel management and staff. Below are some of the comments I found, (when trying to evaluate the hotel prior to booking), that were either negative, irrelevant or just whinges that weren't really helpful but that also may put doubts in peoples minds. I've then added my own opinion. After my own experience at Iberostar Veradero I would just like to give people "my" honest opinion which some may not agree with but hopefully give a clearer view than the pettiness that I read prior to booking. Of course everyone has their individual opinion but please temper this with common sense to help others when looking for advice. One guy was asked to leave because he had entered the "All Inclusive" premises with out and arm band. What do people expect when you come into an all inclusive resort without an arm band? I'd expect to be kicked off if I hadn't made a request to management to enter the premises. You wouldn't get into Disney world for free ad then say "I'm just looking or with my mate". This was just a pointless dig and of no value to those looking for a proper review of the hotel. Substandard internet. My husband and I need to run our business while on holiday. What absolute rubbish. Go to Butlins then. You really gave low marks for this? What did you expect in this 3rd world country, Bill Gates with his personal satellite WiFi set up just for you? I'm certain that you could have found out this before booking I made arrangements with my staff and customers in advance of going on holiday. I already had my doubts about poor internet access and was unsure about the phone service. 3rd world country got my alarm bells ringing. The food is uninspiring and bland? They can only give you what they can import. What do you expect? Go to France if you want cordon bleu. There was plenty of choice and something for everyone and most of it was very tasty. For those who were fussy the cooks would cook fresh food on the hot plate. Food is all about personal taste but to say it was bad was wrong. A guy from our hotel who was sat at the same table on a trip to Havana said that the food was "crap". (Back at the hotel). I asked what he ate at home, was it so much better that the standard and choice at the hotel, was he a connoisseur? Again the cooks/chefs offered to sort something out for you if you weren't happy. Did you complain or whinge? (Remember the difference)? He said that he hadn't complained and given them chance to put it right and agreed that it was really Ok on reflection. Suppose there's always one who likes a moan just for the sake of it. When you see what little the Cubans have to eat it makes you think anyway. I know that last comment has nothing to do with the hotel and reviews. Sorry. The Japanese restaurant is really Chinese food? So what, go to Tokyo if that's what you want. Ok so it possibly wasn't all Japanese but the cooks put on a great show of cooking it right in front of you with a few flames. You chose your meat and it was cooked on two hot plates as the chef got everyone laughing together. It was an entertaining evening and everyone we spoke to enjoyed it. I and others believe that entertainment was the focus of this evening. It was quite tasty anyway Insect bites. Get these at home in the summer , especially at the lakes. Of course insect repellent etc is the the answer. Use that at home, northern Scandinavia - even inside the Arctic Circle and all over Europe too. The bar needs to be a windowless area or you'd suffocate in that heat. What did you expect in that part of the world? As it was, we were there very recently and didn't suffer any bites in the buildings but a few outside and used insect repellent. Litter around the beach. Yes there was a VERY small amount in the scrub but certainly not festooned. Can't holiday makers take responsibility and clean up after themselves. There were bins and posters saying "how do you want to manage you beach" with pictures to match. The beach itself was immaculate and so were the grounds. Bingo around the pool. Not my cup of tea either but there are plenty of quieter places to go. The beach is very close which is beautiful, peaceful and drinks brought to you or there are a couple of bars very close, one serving hot dogs and burgers too. Hammocks in the grounds between the pool and the beach which are very peaceful. This is a hotel for families and has the whole age group to cater for. There were activities going on around the pool for the whole day which is great for some and not others. We just used the sun beds furthest away from the pool or went to the beach. Didn't get hassled at all. For those comments about rude staff; never saw one tiny bit of rudeness, surliness or or any other "ness". We found all the staff were extremely attentive, friendly, very polite and accommodating. Nothing was a problem in my honest opinion and for those few that had a gripe if was sorted immediately and professionally by the staff. In fact it was refreshing to see staff that genuinely liked each other, greeted one another with a hand shake, kiss or hug and appeared to be very appreciative of their jobs. When chatting to some staff, they said that felt privileged to work in such lovely surroundings and have a job. Some of them traveled for hours to get to work. Anyone who rates this hotel as 5 stars has never been to one. If you are expecting a lovely environment with high quality food, drink and service then think again? It's not a true 5 star like you would expect in the 1st world big cities. It's a lovely family "sun" holiday hotel in a 3rd world country. And yes I've been to a true 5 star hotel. Sorry but very formal, boring and expensive. It would cost you the price of this holiday for a couple of nights in a big city true 5 star so please get real. That's like comparing apples with pears To reiterate, if you wanted cordon bleu and Stella then why did you pick Cuba? We wanted the best of both worlds, to have a nice hotel where the food and drink was adequate, (and it certainly was), with clean rooms and sheets, (yes to that too), with a friendly atmosphere and great staff, (yes again) where we could go out and experience the real Cuba and feel safe, (which we did), and then go back to the the comfort of the hotel like most privileged westerners do. If there was one petty whinge, (because I didn't say anything to the management), it would be that the doors were noisy when closing. This could be annoying because of the the banging as people closed theirs if you wanted a lie in in the morning. In those type of buildings it echoes anyway. Not a true 5 star don't you know haha. We just laughed and got up haha. There were quite a few other petty reviews but in a nut shell we personally found the holiday to be a lovely experience and met a lot of lovely people that also thought that the hotel was very nice too. The room was kept immaculate buy the maid, her name was Ines in our case. There were a couple of points so petty that I wouldn't belittle myself to mention them. Some thought that Mexico was slightly better but that they came to experience Cuba. For us it was our 1st time to Cuba and for most others it was their 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th. Would we go back to this? That's a definite Yes. Hope this helps some?

        “Relaxing Beach Vacation ”
We stayed October 17th-24th and this was our third trip to Varadero. We upgraded to the junior suites in block 20. I would highly recommend upgrading as this block was located close to the main dining hall, 3 pools and beach. It is also the furthest from the entertainment hall, so very quiet. The room, pools, buildings and all the grounds were very clean and well maintained with lush vegetation. The hotel beach area was narrow but plenty of shade and loungers. The food in the buffet was excellent for Cuban standards. The staff are all exceptional and very friendly with a special mention going out to Gisele at the beach bar. The Iberostar Varadero delivered in every possible way. Great vacation and I would highly recommend.

“Varadero in the rainy season ”
Even during the rainy season Varadero was amazing, the hotel has umbrellas in every room just in case. I loved the resort, the staff and the fantastic sun! This is a fantastic place to go for a much needed relaxing break, it even had activities and a pool for the kids so it's great for families. Everyday there were activities offered if you didn't want to be too lazy all day. The live shows are a must see, the Michael Jackson impersonator was phenomenal and entertaining. The rooms were well kept and the staff was wonderful. The rooms are very bright and welcoming. The resort is beautiful with drinks served by the beach, by the pool and even in the pool! Be prepared for very strong drinks. The only downsides were the slight sulfur smell the winds and rain brought in at night from the oil fields and our dinner at the Mediterranean restaurant was sub-par so stick with the buffet. Despite that I definitely recommend this resort to anyone looking to vacation in Varadero!

        “First Class Hotel ”
We were celebrating our 25th Wedding Anniversary in September and my wife's Birthday, so we booked a Tailored 2 centred to Cuba which consisted of 4 days in Havana & 10 days in Varadero. The Hotels we booked were part of the Iberostar Chain "The Iberostar Parque Central in Havana & The Iberostar Varadero obviously in Varadero". Both hotels were fantastic. The staff were extremely helpful and the hotels were immaculate. We couldn't of wished for better. Cuba is a fantastic place to visit which was made all the more special by the excellent service that we received in the hotels. Thank you Iberostar.

        “best one yet ”
this is our 7th trip to cuba and we generally try new resorts every time...iberostar varadero is far and away imho the best one yet...food was actually pretty good especially in the a la cartes...lots of fruit as well which is usually lacking (canned peaches, pears, pineapple) , fresh watermelon, honeydew, pineapple etc. grounds were imacculate and the beach barbq was manned by everyday by orlando..size of the resort was easily walked about and the beach loungers were comfortable and numerous..highly reccomend this resort..have been to the breezes varadero, iberostar laguna azul, paradisus, barcelo solymar(twice), blau and the arenas blancas. we had the best time here so far..

“Shocked by bad things said about this hotel. ”
I have been to Cuba in excess of 50 times in the last 15 years and tried most of the best hotels and some of the smaller low budget also. In my opinion Iberostar Varadero is one of the best for quality with amazing staff, facilities and food. Unlike many other destinations in the Carribbean that hotels in Cuba are compared with there are many factors that work against the hotel that are beyond their control in the desire to offer perfection. Of course standards can drop and the hotel management need to hear about any issues but I believe if people understood the situation in Cuba better and the people they would be more understanding when the odd crack appears in quality. As for Wifi, it is a problem throughout the whole country and if you want to stay in touch with your business and dont want to spend a fortune in time and money trying to do so my advice would be dont go to Cuba. This is not the fault of the hotels. Every tourist and every Cuban resident longs for the day when access with the internet is what most tourists are used to. Progress is slow in Cuba and the cost of communication to the outside world remains the biggest problem for a tourist. It still may be expensive to use a mobile phone in Cuba but in 1997 you could not which was a shock to many unsuspecting visitors. I remember it well as one call from the hotel phone to wish my father happy birthday cost me gbp140. Happy Days!!

        “Another fantastic holiday! ”
We have just returned from our 3rd visit to this resort. As usual it was fab, the staff are so friendly and it was great to meet up with some friends that we had made over the previous 2 visits. The weather was great as usual. We have no complaints about anything. We had flowers & champagne in our room when we arrived as we had emailed the hotel prior to our visit as we were celebrating our anniversary whilst there. The rooms are always spotless, room service very good. The animation team work very hard to keep everyone entertained during the day and the shows in the evening were very professional. We have booked to return again at the end of next September as we love this hotel. All the staff are very friendly and accomodating & are willing to help with anything. The grounds are stunning adn well maintained by the very hardworking team of gardeners. We spoke to the assistant manager Francisco on a few occasions as he was always walking around asking guests if everything was ok. He was a really nice guy and was very interested in your opinions/suggestions. He is sadly leaving this hotel to go to another Iberostar resort to help with improvements there. He has been at this hotel for a year and we noticed some changes/improvements since our last visit. All in all a fantastic place to relax & enjoy your well deserved holiday. “Fantastic hotel ”
We stayed at the Iberostar Varadero recently and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We were greeted at reception immediately with a welcome drink and our bags were taken to the room. Check in was fast and efficient and the reception staff were friendly. Our room was beautiful - very spacious and spotlessly clean. The bed was huge and very comfortable. The resort itself is stunning - the garden and pool areas are fab and very well maintained. The resort is not high rise or overly big so it was easy to get around. We stayed in block 15 and could just about see the beach from our room and were about 2 minute walk to the pool area. My biggest concern before staying here was the food but I was pleasantly surprised. The food was certainly not bad and in some cases very good. The buffet area had something for everyone - from fresh pizza, freshly grilled meats and fish, salads etc. In some cases the food was slightly bland (particularly the desserts) but it was good for the most part and you will be sure to find something you like there. Service in the buffet area was very good and the staff were very attentive bringing wine/water etc. We went to the japanese restaurant one night and while it was fine for a change of scenery, I would not rush back. Overall what makes this hotel is the staff, they are so friendly and professional. In particular the entertainment team - Although some of the shows would not be my scene, they really give 100% and work very hard to entertain the guests. They do a great job! There is a night club that open's until 2 a.m. and we went a couple of nights . It was ok and a good option to have when everything else shut down. It would be much better if the DJ stuck to more eclectic mix of music rather than banging techno as I think alot more guests would attend - it was empty most nights. The only minor bad point I would say about the hotel is the quality of the cocktails were inconsistant and sometimes seemed to deteriorates as the night went on. I ordered a mojito one night only to find that, no matter how much I stirred it, there was an inch of sugar floating around the bottom of the glass and it was undrinkable. This kind of thing happened more than once and was a bit annoying. For the most part though, the drinks were fine and the best drinks were from the main bar in reception where they also had the best selection. In summary, I would highly recommend this resort and would definitely return there. From what I saw of the other resorts, Iberostar seems to be one of the best on the strip. The resort has a lovely vibe and is very very relaxing and easy going - just what a AL holiday should be.Go, and enjoy!

        Iberostar Varadero
Opened in late 2004, the three storey buildings are scattered through beautiful landscaped gardens in a peaceful location some 20 minutes from the centre of Varadero. Three magnificent swimming pools plus a children's pool, with a spectacular stretch of beach towards the end of the peninsula.

A true five star hotel Iberostar Varadero
We traveled to Cuba in March and felt we made a perfect choice with this super-hotel. No matter which way you look at it, it is entirely deserving of its five stars: top-notch services, friendly employees, exquisite food, elegant restaurants, spectacular shows, courteous waiters at the beach, ballet performances, and great hosts. If you're looking for peace and quiet and comfort, this hotel is the ideal place for a relaxed vacation. I want to say hi to our maid, Mrs. Doris, my warm greetings to her and to the best dancer at the shows, GIORGIO, I salute your great artistic talents, which made our stay at the hotel all the more pleasant. Greetings to all the hotel employees and I hope to see you all soon. (Translated from an original in Spanish)

We got married at this hotel in March 2011. If you want a destination wedding with no stress, book this place. Rooms are clean, staff is amazing, food is good for cuban standards, but very bland. Bring spices. I heard from other people that the IV had the best food compared to other hotels around though. We loved our first 2 week visit so much that we returned for New Years this year. We are considering going back yet again for new years...we were considering mexico, but i think we may just go back here. Our second visit was 9 months later, and people remembered us...people would stop to say 'oh, your back again, nice to see you'...You will not get that at very many places. If you want a vacation to remember and you go for the people as much as the hotel, this is the place for you.

I spent six wonderful days in this hotel. All the people are very friendly. I have the best feeling for those who attended me. I remember quite well Llaima a beautiful woman that works at the Mediterranean Restaurant, very nice person. I miss the flowers that the gardener gave me every morning. I recommend it, I felt in love of Havana and Varadero.

        Iberostar Varadero Great
We were at this hotel in Sept. 2011 at room 1102, I was with my wife. The days were super super guay... the animation staff are the best, my wife was ill and I was around doing whatever, she also enjoy her stay, her only complain is that the discoteque is a little bore. We spent so nice time that we are coming back in Sept. 2008, we have booked already. We also make a mark at the hotel, because we are also like a bomb... you can ask about the dancers. Valentin Giorgio, Dailen and the choreographer Davod, are the best of the best.
