We welcome you to Cienfuegos, also known as Perla del Sur or Linda Ciudad del Mar. Established in 1819 and named as Fernandina de Jagua, the city has its coast facing the Caribbean Sea and a bay always coveted by colonizers and pirates. Considered one of a kind in Cuba and built by French people, by its nautical, historical and cultural potential. The city options don't disappoint all those who visit it. The architecture of Cienfuegos, located in the southern and central area of Cuba, is astonishing, specially its historic center with its great monuments that was declared Humanity's Cultural Heritage on July 15, 2005. There are great places at Cienfuegos, like the Terry Theater, Valle Palace, the Jagua Castle, the Paseo del Prado  venue leading to the sea, the Botanical Garden and the Rancho Luna Beach with its white sand an clear waters full of an amazing fauna. The sea bottoms invite to perform diving adventures at coral reefs located at low and medium depth. In the greatest accumulations of coral one can find a great amount of sponges, corals, gorgonias and sea species. Cienfuegos is also famous for its Creole food with excellent dishes where fish and seafood are the main elements. The city will satisfy the most demanding expectations and will prove the certitude of that phrase sung by the famous Cuban singer Benny Moré: "Cienfuegos is the city I love the most".

French émigrés from Bordeaux and Louisiana founded the settlement of Fernandina de Jagua on a large, calm bay on the Caribbean Sea on April 22, 1819. In 1830, when it was upgraded to a town, its name was changed to Cienfuegos, in honor of José Cienfuegos, the Governor-General of Cuba. Fifty years later, it was proclaimed a city and, for its beauty, was called "the pearl of the south." By the end of the 19th century, it had become the fourth most important city in the country.,

Considered the crowning jewel of Cuban architectural in the 19th century, Cienfuegos stands out for the perfect design of its streets and for the refinement and good taste of the buildings in the historic center of the city, which has been declared a national monument. When visiting, stop by the Casa del Fundador (the Founder's House); Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción (Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception) Cathedral; the Tomás Terry Theater; the Ferrer Palace; and the José Martí Park, which contains the only arch of triumph in Cuba.,

Other attractions include the Prado Promenade, the Valle Palace, the museums of Naval and Provincial History, and the Reina (Queen's) Cemetery.,

Farther out from the center of the city, tour the Nuestra Señora de los Angeles de Jagua (Jagua for short) Fortress, the Tomás Acea Cemetery and the Botanical Gardens.,

In addition to these cultural and historic attractions, Cienfuegos has excellent facilities for scuba diving and other water sports, nature tourism and thermal baths.

cienfuegos City
Culture Located in the center of the island, this province possesses one of the most beautiful bays in Cuba, Jagua Bay, place of settlement of aboriginal communities first and target for pirates and privateers later. The bay has so many legends that one can say it has a mythology of its own. The city, founded by French hailing from Bordeaux, was called Fernandina de Jagua. The urban center was originally conceived according to the standards of the time. Around the arms square the first blocks were built, having a very modern conception (in comparison to other cities of the island), and the first constructions were built there. Many of them are still preserved today and enrich local architecture and culture. Worth-admiring are the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la PurĂsima ConcepciĂ³n (1819), TomĂ¡s Terry Theater, and the Palatino, the latter considered the oldest of all. Nowadays, this area concentrates several cultural facilities where the visitor can enjoy local art and music. Cienfuegos treasures many other outstanding constructions of great architectonic value such as The Arc of Triumph (only one of its kind in Cuba), erected in 1902 in the ancient arms square (today JosĂ© MartĂ Park). There are also palaces, parks, theaters, churches restaurants, and an avenue called Paseo del Prado that extends up to the Palacio de Valle, a luxurious mansion considered a real jewel of Cienfuegos architecture. To illustrate the accelerated progress of this city in cultural matters, it can be said that barely 25 years after its foundation the first printing house was opened, publishing its first newspaper, "El Puerto de Cienfuegos", the following day. A hundred years later, 253 serial publications would see the light in the city, not considering those of adjacent towns. The development reached in education can not be left unmentioned. Cienfuegos has three higher learning institutions in which hundreds of students, not only from Cienfuegos, but also from other countries, receive education. For instance, every year, its Medicine School alone graduates more professionals than the University of Havana prior to 1959.

Cienfuegos Cuba
Along this region, plain zones, like Cienfuegos and Manacas plains, predominate. Those plains are located to the west and center of the province respectively while to the eastern part we find the heights of Santa Clara and the mountains of Guamuhaya, the latter having the highest point in the province and central region of Cuba, Pico San Juan (1140 m, 3739 ft) and the MartĂn Infierno cave treasuring a 50 m (164 ft) high and 30 m (98 ft) wide stalagmite. Cienfuegos' fluvial system is represented by rivers DamujĂ, Caunao, Arimao, Salado, and San Juan among others. Highly important are Ciego Montero mineral, medicinal, and thermal waters. Cienfuegos bay is characterized by its depth, its narrow entrance channel, and its wide interior. In addition, the waterfalls of El Nicho, located in Sierra de Trinidad mountain range, and the Guajimico zone are ideal sites for those loving nature and adventure tourism.
