  • Description: Meson de la Flota Hotel Cuba

Located a few metres from the Havana Harbour, and following the tradition of Caribbean ports where this kind of taverns were at disposal of sailors and docked fleets members, the Meson de la Flota is a beautiful small hostel with a marine atmosphere. The house, a replica of a Spanish tavern, has five comfortable rooms and serves exquisite “tapas” and wines. The place is entirely decorated with sea motives and replicas of old vessels. The Flamenco performances carried out every night, make this place one of the most picturesque of its type in Old Havana. Being a port city, Havana was always open to sea trade from all corners of the world. On Mercaderes Street, a short distance from the bay and the historical Old Square, El Meson de la Flota opens its doors to visitors, bringing back the image of the old 18th and 19th century inns; those that served as a meeting place for sailors from the legendary galleon fleet during their stay in Havana. The inn has five comfortable rooms and a restaurant that resembles a Spanish tavern that serves delicious tapas and select wines. The decoration of the inn features sea motifs with scale model replicas of old vessels, complemented by the charm and emotional call of a Flamenco "tablao" that undoubtedly invites us to drop in and enjoy a night out.

      Havana Airport

José Martí International Airport (IATA: HAV, ICAO: MUHA), sometimes known by its former name Rancho-Boyeros Airport, is located 15 km (9 mi) southwest of Havana, Cuba, and is a hub for Cubana de Aviación, Aerogaviota, and Aero Caribbean, and former Latin American hub for Aeroflot Soviet Airlines.[2] It is Cuba's main international and domestic gateway, and serves several million passengers each year. The airport lies in the municipality of Boyeros and connects Havana with the rest of the Caribbean, North, Central and South America, Europe, and one destination in Africa. It is named in memory of patriot and poet José Martí. In the 1960s the airport was bombed by B-26 aircraft from Brigade 2506, a CIA-sponsored group of Cuban exiles attempting to liberate Cuba from Fidel Castro. Cubans are not allowed to own aircraft or use the airport for either private or commercial flight. Only government-owned aircraft are allowed to use the facilities. There are currently four passenger terminals in use at the airport, plus a freight terminal.[3] Terminal 1 is used primarily for domestic flights. Terminal 2 opened in 1988, primarily for charter flights to the United States. Ten years later on April 27, 1998, the International Terminal 3 was opened by Canada's then-Prime Minister, Jean Chrétien, and former Cuban president, Fidel Castro. International Terminal 3 offers many modern facilities and jetways that the former international Terminal 1 did not provide. Terminal 5 is operated by Aerocaribbean. Today, Copa Airlines is the foreign airline with most flights to the airport, operating 34 flights a week (roughly 5 daily flights) from Panama City, Panama, and Bogota, Colombia. The airport is operated by Empresa Cubana de Aeropuertos y Servicios Aeronáuticos (ECASA).

        “Bad food, lazy staff... ”
There are really good restaurants in Havana. This isn't one, and the muppets from the Lonely Planet guide should hang their heads in shame... But they did say they did only 15 weeks research for an Island the length of Lands End to John O Groats.... This place looks ok from outside, flamenco is the gimmick, along with a nautical flavour... But the staff stand around, ignore people and the food is terrible... Worst food we had in Cuba.

“Do not stay here!!! Terrible hotel ”
My husband and I stayed here in March 2013. The website was misleading and at no point did it state it was a restaurant. We arrived after a long flight to rude staff that ignored us for 30 minutes and then proceeded to tell us our room was having maintenance issues. We were transferred to another hotel for the night. The next day we had to go back to dreaded meson de la flota. The staff didnt offer an apology or anything. The room was not very clean and the bathroom smelt of sewage! Basically they have salsa dancing rehersals rom 2-4pm and then again the live show at 8-11. So you do not get any peace and quiet in this terrible "hotel". The staff are rude and the breakfast is terrible. Luke warm hot drinks and bread that is stale and frazzled omlettes. We found the hotel so bad that we checked out a day early. I would not reccommend this place to anyone.

        “Just say no”
The food and flamenco are as fake as the maritime decor. As if that wasn't enough, the waiter encouraged us to go for a deal including dessert, but when we the bill arrived we were informed that the dessert he had served us was not included in the deal - that only covered 'marmalade'! I deducted the price of the dessert (which we anyway did not eat as it was very poor) from the bill and left it at that. They also tried to charge us for the bread which we had rejected. And they charge for service, which isn't always the case in Cuba. What a shame when there are some excellent restaurants in Havana.

“Apalling Food - Restaurant Only Review ”
We were seduced into eating here by the prospect of a Flamenco show and the fact that the restaurant looks very attractive. As others have said the menu choices are limited but that is true of most restaurants in Havana. My wife chose chicken and when we were told there was none we made to leave. Miraculously - after checking - pollo was available. When it arrived it was inedible, and the time taken to produce the food suggested it may not have been cooked from scratch. I had belly pork which was not as hot as it should have been. The roasted rosemary potato was a spoonful of mash with a couple of twigs in it (nouvelle cuisine Cuban style?) no herbs in sight. There is good food in Havana but in our experience you won't find it here - AVOID!

        “Be careful ”
The person that made our travel arrangements double booked us for the night we were to stay at the Meson de la Flota so we personally visited the hotel one week before our reservation and again on the day of the reservation to be sure that it was canceled. Despite all assurances that our credit card would be credited with the amount prepaid (65.92 euros), it never happened. It looked like a delightful place to stay, but honesty has to count for something.

The rooms were lovely and clean and in a great location, but there is no sleeping. If you a night person---go and enjoy but otherwise the noice (LOUD NOISE) from music and stomping the flamingo does not stop until 1am....sorry, but I had earplugs in and took an ambien and still could not fall asleep until not good---cockroach ran across out table, seriously.

“Bad food - Average show ”
In the restaurant, the really know how to sell the recommended dinner, I'm sure they'll convince you, but once the food arrives is completely tasteless and it is expensive. There are better restaurants near by. The service started good, but once they started getting more people, it became really bad. The show is not bad, but is not amazing either, just average.

“Wonderful location, charming, but noisy with saggy beds and unreliable plumbing. ”
When we arrived at 3 a.m. (as scheduled) they wouldn't take us to our room, saying there was no electricity. Then, they drove us across town to the Riviera (a huge hotel built in the 50's by the Mafia) and installed us in a massive suite completely unchanged (every stick of furniture was original) since it was built. It had a huge king-size bed, a sunken bathtub, a large living room, even a bidet, and a view of the ocean. The next day, we went back to El Meson and found ourselves in a high-ceilinged room at the back. Very nicely appointed. However, the water pressure was so low, with no hot water, so we couldn't take a shower for 4 days. The air in Havana was so polluted and because we badly needed sleep since the flamenco show was so loud right beneath us until 11:00 p.m. nightly, and the staff talked in full voice until much later and then again very early in the morning, we finally gave up and left, despite having paid in advance for a whole week, and booked into the luxurious Nacional for one night before escaping, at our own expense, to Cayo Largo, for much needed rest and recreation. Havana is a fascinating city, with remarkable architecture and historic buildings, but once in a life-time is enough. Also, after half a dozen visits to Cuba over the past 30 years, it finally sunk in how limited the lives of Cubans are, how little money they have ($20 a month is a "good" salary) and how restricted their freedom is, that we began to feel uncomfortable, and will not go back again. Should you go? Yes, at least once! Should you stay at El Meson de la Flota? Not unless you're very young and prepared to rough it.

“Rude staff ruin a lovely place ”
Although I have essentially nothing new to add to previous reviews, I just want to reiterate a few points. On the positive side: 1. It is very centrally located 2. It is good value for money (£95 for 2 of us for 2 nights bed, breakfast and dinner) 3. It has lots of character, not least the incredibly high doors and windows! 4. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, if a bit sparsely furnished. 5. The cocktails are cheap and good, the food is pretty good. 6. The nightly flamenco show is really exhilarating and only lasts a maximum of 2 hours On the negative side: 1. The staff are incredibly rude, with the sole exception of Dragonoberto, who was a star and stopped me sinking into a deep depression at how badly we were being treated by everyone else! 2. They seemed very put out when we turned up for our pre-booked room. While 2 of them flapped about sorting out whatever their problem was, we had a hard time trying to get the large number of staff hanging around to make eye contact with us and serve us a drink! They finally showed us to our room but tried to say that we had not paid for dinner, even thought it was clearly printed on our accommodation voucher from Hotelopia! 3. Our dinner plates were just thrown down on the table, we had to wait ages to get the waitress's attention to order drinks. Breakfast wasn't much better. We are very smiley, friendly, easy going people and have never experienced this kind of behaviour in a restaurant or hotel; we usually find that being friendly encourages other people to be friendly to us, so having the opposite happen was quite a shock! It really was a horrific experience. I didn't realise how much one's experience of a place depends on the way in which one is treated but, writing this review, I realise that there was nothing else wrong with El Meson de la Flota and may have warranted 4 or even 5 stars had they been friendly and welcoming. So if you are tougher than me and don't mind staff treating you like you are beneath contempt, by all means go here. However, if you think that the cost of accommodation should include a smile and pleasant service, give it a wide berth.

This is a restaurant with rooms available upstairs. Definitely not a hotel. Surly, unhelpful staff (lots of them but no one seems to do anything). They seemed put out that there were rooms there, that they had to check us in and serve us breakfast. The rooms are large and clean and the location was very central. Overall, ok but I would not recommend it as a place to stay. You'd be better off in a proper hotel.

“Not for the faint at heart... ”
I don't know what it was about us when we checked in, but the Hotel staff didn't seem to like us. I guess because we looked pretty shabby with our backpacks and shorts on, but for 86 convertible pesos a night, this is probably considered quite an upmarket sort of place. At least, that's what the staff think, and they are probably right. There are only 5 rooms, all of which occupy the floor above the restaurant. Let's get one thing straight first: El Meson De La Flota is a restaurant, first and foremost, with (beautiful, air-conditioned, mini-fridge, clean and bright) rooms above it. This means that the very cool and loud Flamenco concert that starts at 9pm every night will keep you awake if you are trying to get a bit of shuteye early. The huge beautiful wooden doors to your private balcony are not exactly soundproof, so the sound of the water truck blasting its pumps away at 8am will definately wake you up, unless you've got earplugs or are very very hard of hearing. The rooms are very beautiful, and the restaurant downstairs is top-knotch, and the free breakfast is great, but the staff can seem a little stand-offish (perhaps normal for Havana?).

        “Based on restaurant, not hotel”
Tapas. After a few days of Cuban food and having been "travel ill"for a few days, the idea of something familiar and different from the now all too familiar rice and beans (Moros y cristianos) was something we welcomed with open arms. Yet herein lay the issue: I have a preconception of what tapas are. Living in London and having been to Madrid and Barcelona a few times, my imagination swam with fond memories of rich chorizo and eggy tortillas. The menu here does have some tapas stalwarts like a cheese and meat board, garlic prawns as well as chickpeas and chorizo. The tapas section is in fact about 2 pages but this includes a broad minded interpretation of what constitutes tapas such as the perennial Prawn cocktail in Marie Rose sauce. The food is OK. The cheese and meat platter was a selection of sandwich hams and sliced cheese. The garlic prawns were garlicky in name only. The chickpeas were good, rich tasting and hot. The prawn cocktail (yes, yes we ordered it) was about has good as that ever gets. The portions are big. So we are used to ordering five items for the 2 of us. Massive error. You'd do we'll to just order 3. We were quite embarrassed by how much we just physically couldn't eat anymore. The service however is very good; our waiter spoke impeccable English too in case your Spanish is a little rusty. The issue here is I may have gone in with a preconception which just didn't have a hope's chance of finding any resemblance. On the plus, there is a flamenco dance group who are popular here but we missed them as we were too early.

We ate here after reading a review in the Lonely Planet guide - we should have read up more about it on here first! They were very keen to get us in but after that the service went downhill despite the high staff to customer ratio! There were a few dishes we fancied that weren't available so we ended up going for the dish recommended by the waiter. It was ok but nothing special and we didn't get quite what we ordered in the end anyway! This wouldn't have been a major problem but the lack of interest shown by the staff added to our disappointment - they were more interested in watching the baseball on the TV at the bar or checking out their mobile phones outside the front door! The flamenco show was also ok but not that special either. We learned from this that it's probably better to eat in privately owned Paladares than Habanaguex-run restaurants!

        “Great location, reasonable hotel ”
We stayed here on our arrival in Havana, for 3 nights. Its not so easy for taxi drivers from the airport to find as it is in the pedestrianised part of the old town, but this makes it a great location once you are settled in. Some of the staff were very friendly, others more indifferent and on our early morning departure we had to be quite persistent to get our breakfast on time and to get a taxi ordered. Having said that, this hotel is an easy introduction to Cuba, being in the heart of the tourist area and with lots of restaurants all about. The rooms are big, are in a reasonable condition and pretty comfortable. The bathroom was big but only just clean enough. This place feels like it is really a restaurant with about 5 rooms attached. The main activity is feeding and entertaining, with daily and nightly flamenco, groups of tourists. If you want to eat here, they seemed to insist we had the 20 CUC set menu, which we didn't want and were not very happy when we went elsewhere rather than be bamboozled into a meal twice as expensive as you needed to pay. This review is written with hindsight, after three weeks in Cuba, and fantastic hospitality and great food in the casa particulares. Hotels seemed rather pale, but expensive, comparisons by the time we finished our trip. Oh, and hotels in the old part of town, do not have mains water, so the water lorry comes every morning at 5am, outside your window and fires up its pump to pump your shower water into the hotel. This was slightly cheaper than the Hostal Valencia we stayed in on our return to Havana, but I would say the extra CUCs were worth it.

“Great location but terrible beds ”
This hotel is in a really great location on a pedestrian street near to Plaza Vieja. The rooms have very high ceilings with tall windows and doors opening out onto a balcony over looking the street. Breakfast is good as is the restaurant although the flamenco show can be very noisy but only lasts about 30 minutes. The main down side to this accommodation was the quality of the beds, they were really saggy and a spring had broken through the mattress and scratched my husbands back in the night. Also there was rarely hot water in the shower. Despite all this we did enjoy our stay in this good value hotel.

Spent 3 nights here with my wife. I have to say there was nothing wrong with the room at all. Nice and spacey, high ceilings, fridge, safe and a nice balcony. There was no reception as such downstairs, just the bar staff. The location was very central. The one big problem was the noise. Every morning between 5 and 6 a water truck pulled up outside and noisely pumped off water. Up early every day so we thought we'd come back for a siesta. . . . .not a chance. 2 hours of microphoned live music and flamenco hammering between half 12 and half 2 in the afternoon everyday. Followed by the same from 9pm to 11.30 at night. The main reason i wouldn't stay here again!

good food although in typical Cuban style only 3 or 4 things on the menu were actually available. Also, insist on the wine list, don't get fobbed off with the wine they are trying to sell; it won't be a bad bottle but it's not the only one they have. Very friendly to all types of tourists. The Flamenco show is fabulous, honest and worth the visit in itself.

We did not stay at the Hotel but visiting the Plaza Vieja on our first trip to Cuba we came upon the lovely looking restaurant with people sitting outdoors at the tables on a pedestrian sidewalk enjoying lunch and drinks. We therefore joined them by relaxing with a cold beer and a snack to celebrate my birthday. It had great atmosphere and service was prompt served by friendly staff. The inside of the restaurant looked very inviting as well and will try it on our next trip. Had a lovely experience on our walk through Old Havana.

“Great Location in Old Havana ”
El Meson de la Flota is a spanish restaurant with 5 rooms above it and I stayed there with my partner and a friend this November. The large spacious, airey rooms with floor to ceiling doors and windows are finished and furnished to a high standard. My friend had the Rayo Room which was more like a suite rather than a room with a sofa, large plasma tv and a huge bathroom. The rooms either look out over the main street or, in the case of the Rayo, over the atrium down into the restaurant. We found the staff to be very helpful, the food very good by cuban standards and in the evening there is an excellent flamenco show from 8.00pm to 11.00pm. The hotel is perfectly located just of fthe Plaza Vieja which is truly beautiful and houses a few good bars, one with a its own mirco brewery. El Meson de la Flota was for us a real find and we would definately stay again when we visit Havana.

“Lovely room, great atmosphere, very noisy ”
El Meson de la Flota is in the most perfect location you could ask for to wander the streets of Havana Old Town. The rooms are recently modernised and are well up to the standard of much more expensive hotels, with very comfy beds and good air conditioning. The staff are helpful, the food is not at all bad by Cuban standards (top tip, take the omelette option for breakfast) and they have a lively flamenco act of an evening. The only drawback, and it's not necessarily that much of a one, is that the rooms open off an atrium above the restaurant/bar/stage area, and the sound carries. So, if you want to sleep before 11pm or after about 8am, forget it and go somewhere else. Outside those hours you will be fine, and for me all the other qualities El Meson has are more than enough to outweigh any issue with the noise.

        “Charming hostel, noisy restaurant! ”
My husband and I stayed there during our honeymoon in 2002 (I know, that was ages ago). This was our first time in Havana and looking back, I am glad we stayed there. This place is not quite a hotel, it is rather a restaurant/bar with 5 or 6 rooms situated on the top floor. The rooms are named after famous ships and the doors to all open into a balcony overlooking the restaurant. The rooms are big, with very high ceilings (makes them cooler) and large bathrooms. The hotel is literally in the centre and everything is at walking distance, which makes things easy and interesting. The restaurant is quite nice, although we only had dinner once there and no other meals during our stay. I tried the lobster with papaya which was really nice and quite exotic. The staff were quite helpful and we thought that the overall service was good (cleaning, laundry service etc). The only upsetting thing was the flamenco show going on at the restaurant on Saturday night which was noisy and I was not prepared for it, thinking that I would go to bed early after a busy day. However, this was not something to blame the hotel as it is well known for having a live show, it was basically something that my husband and I overlooked when we booked the hotel. So after realising that we wouldn't be able to sleep early, we went downstairs and enjoyed the show over a few drinks. In summary, this is a very nice and relatively cheap hotel/restaurant/bar with nice big rooms and helpful staff. However, I would not go there again simply because I am a person who doesn't like any noise at all at the hotel where I am staying, although I would enjoy dinner and the flamenco show there, but only as a visitor!

This hotel is in a brilliant location, just off the main plaza Vieja, so close to all the action and restaurants. We stayed in the first room at the top of the stairway at the back of the building. All the rooms seem to be different. This one has really comfortable beds(some of the other reviews mentioned theirs were not comfortable, not the case here) and large modern bathroom, plus seperate sitting room , with lounge and TV bar fridge (mini bar). The ceilings are massively high and the decor is tasteful and stylish. Choosing this room also gives you your own balcony outside , with leather lounge chairs, because it is not a thorough- fare to the other 4 hotel rooms... a real bonus to watch the nightly dancing and show . I would definately stay again. The price was reasonable and a al acarte breakfast was included.

        “Great restaurant”
We visited the restaurant not the hotel but as there is no restaurant review .... We would really recommend this place. We were taken there for lunch by a Cuban friend who certainly knows what's what. I had the prawn and chicken skewer and my partner and Norma both chose the chicken with tropical fruit sauce. I can honestly say that the food, while not brilliant by European standards, was among the best we ate in Havana and at very reasonable cost. Much has been said about the flamenco. I can imagine that if you were staying at the hotel this could be an issue (although it does finish by 11pm), and even at lunchtime it's not conducive to conversation at the table but ... it is really good. Wer have seen a lot of flamenco in the south of Spain and the performances here honestly do compare - the groups doing it are the best in Cuba and it's fascinating that there is so much interest here in the Spanish art form. From other reviews we like the sound of the hotel too so may try it on a future visit! We stayed at the Parque Central, which we've already reviewed.

“Small hotel in old Havana ”
For anyone looking for a good, reasonably priced hotel in the middle of old Havana you need look no further than the Meson de la Flota. It's basically five large rooms above a restaurant which features flameco bands/dancers more or less every night. (Don't worry that you 'll be kept awake by the noise from below - they finish by 10.30 at the latest.) Other hotels in the area can be twice as expensive and or even more but offer very little extra. So if you're arriving in Havana and want to stay in the old town (which is by far the most interesting place to be) I'd definitely recommend the Meson de la Flota as a starting point (with the caveat that the breakfast isn't up to much.) A word of warning - book it on the internet from abroad. It will cost you considerably less than if you just turn up on spec. We stayed in the hotel for 3 nights to see in new year and the 50th anniversary of the Revolution. We expected noise, but to be honest, the flamenco finished by 11pm each night and people talking in the street were louder than the bar beneath (which you would get anywhere). Breakfast was good, they just made whatever you asked for, and it seemed a bit more laid back than a formal hotel. We had no problems with rude staff - everyone was perfectly polite. One night we ate in the restaurant (fish kebabs) and it was amazing! Topped off by some pretty special flamenco too, which is all free. Basically it has great character, is really good value for money, is in a good spot and you don't have far to stagger upstairs after a night out!

Downstairs it is a restaurant (seafood is quite good and always fresh)where there is a flamenco show (good!)every night from 9 pm- approx. 11 pm. It is quite noisy, but who cares? You can have a night walk (safe - even in dark streets - because you will find at least 1 policeman on every corner) or enjoy the show during dinner. The rooms are clean and the bathroom is also OK. The room we stayed in was very modern, high ceilings, new bedding, 2 huge beds, modern bathroom - honestly all of the comfort you can get from a modern hotel at home (which is rare in Havana). Staff was kind - they brought in a fresh fruit and bread for us in the morning and they checked in with us a couple times to make sure our stay was comfortable. The Meson de la Flota has only five rooms and is located in the heart of Havana Vieja, near Plaza Vieja, which makes it a great place to explore the city. Admittedly, it is more of a restaurant with daily Flamenco shows and some rooms attached, but nevertheless we had a great stay here at the start of our three weeks in Cuba and returned twice during our stay. The staff are very friendly, warm, welcoming and helpful. They knew us by name after a day or two and we felt right at home. They also helped us with planning our route and trying to find a rental car. The rooms in the Meson de la Flota are very spacious and clean. Make sure to get number one, two or three, which have a balcony facing the street. Enjoy a cold beer or mojito and watch the streetlife below you or just relax in the patio-facing veranda in one of the rocking chairs. If you are looking for peace and quiet, then the Flamenco show (which usually finishes between 10 pm and 11 pm) might put you off. But then again, if you are looking for peace and quiet, Havana is probably the wrong place for you to go to.

On Mercaderes street, a few steps from the Old Square, the Meson de la Flota keeps the legends of the Galeon fleets in Havana. The Inn has five comfortable rooms and an 80-seat restaurant, following the old tradition of providing a place to sleep on the upper floors and a place to eat on the ground floor. The whole place is decorated with sea motifs, with small replicas of old vessels. The grace and passion of a flamenco "tablao" invites you to enjoy the city at night.
