        “Bonjour tristesse ”
This hotel really left me without words to describe the horrors we encountered there. We have stayed in other state owned hotels, but this one was something special: plain rooms without any amenities (no mini bar, no hair dryer, no shampoo, no lamps aside from neon light on the ceiling, no pool towels, no bath mat,...). But the worst thing is the food. On the breakfast buffet we found the left-overs from the horrible dinner-buffet, hardly anything was edible. And the staff doe not care about anything - whenever we asked (for simple things like ketchup, which you can find anywhere in Cuba) they did not have it. An exception are the waiters in the pool bar, they were kind and tried their best. I would recommend to stay there only if you have no other choice.

Basic hotel with terrible buffet style dinner and breakfast. Spent an evening at the bar near the pool, there were very few other guests. Turned my back for a moment and my jacket was gone. Staff had been clearing tables very quickly after guests left and there was littel other activity.

“Stay away from this property!!! ”
Stay away from this property! It was my first time in Holguin. Unfortunately, Holguin does not have any hotel downtown which caters to the tourist. I had not choice but pick Pernik hotel. The hotel amazingly won an architecture award in 1999. The hotel was build during the Soviet era: Square structures, and ugly design, nothing to be proud of but I am not an expert in architecture and my comments are not regarding the beauty of the hotel. I just want to write my experience during my stay. The hotel is falling apart. I was put on the third floor in a room facing the pool. The room was full of blackflies (some king of tropical bugs). To make matters worse, very loud reggaeton music was playing in the pool. For a fee, locals can use the pool. These make the swimming pool a public facility. More than 50 people drinking alcohol all day. I don?t have a problem with that but the music all day is horrible. I would not recommend anyone swimming in that pool. I witnessed several people spitting in the pool. Anyhow, I don?t have a problem with that. I choose no to use the facility but the music was unbearable. I requested to be relocated to the other extreme of the building. Fortunately, I got a better room where I could not hear the constant loud music but when it rained, the wall became the ?Niagara Fall? I had to pick my shoes from the floor otherwise they got all wet. It may cause you to laugh but it is the true. I am not a picky person, I am clear that you get according to what you pay. For 3 nights, I paid over 280 US dollars, including breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food was HORRIBLE. Just to give you an example, for honey, they served sugar dissolved in water. Pork was swimming in oil. Very greasy food. You could find fresh mangos as well as limes all over Holguin but the hotel does not provide a dissent natural fruit juice. No limes, they had nothing. On my second night after I eat only soup, I went outside and the music coming from a terrace in the front of the hotel cough my attention. I went to see what was there and to my surprise they have a very nice bar in that terrace. The nice young manager urged me to come back and enjoy a cocktail since the place was almost empty. Later on, I returned to the same place wearing a short, t-shirt and tennis shoes. It was July 12. When I tried to go upstairs a security person told me I could not go to the terrace in shorts because they had a ?dress code?. I could not believe what I was listening. I was going to a TERRACE in a two star hotel in the middle of the summer weather!!!!! When I explained to him that the manager told me to come back, he refused to let me in. I told him that I wanted to speak to the manager of the bar and as I tried to go upstairs, he grabbed my arm and pushed me. At that moment I noticed the smell of alcohol coming from the security man?s mouth. I told him he does not have the right to touch me and he said ?that is the way we do things in Cuba? I reported the incident in the front desk and no one took care of. I even spoke to the public relation person and she only apologized. Despite my bad experience in this property, the city of Holguin is very nice. Next time, I will stay in a private house rather than this hotel.

I was with my Cuban fiance for 3 days in Hotel Pernik. De bold restaurant waiter was very lazy and is a liar. De young waitress (stagiair) at the bar outside did not want to help us. So we ordered our meal and drinks by the male senior waiter. After our meal the same youg waitress wanted us to pay twice! 80% of the hotel employees were not friendly. The airconditioning threw out water so the handwriitten book of my fiance was pourwet. next toour room were workers from 7 in the morning bouncing at the wall. the water of the shower was not very good.

        “Hotel Nightmare ”
Flying into and from Holguin, we spent our last night at the Hotel Pernik, hoping for a good nights sleep before a 30 hour return journey to Scotland. This was not to be! The hotel's disco, apparently much in demand with the good citizens of Holguin, went on until 2pm after which those staying retired to their rooms with giant carry outs to continue the party. The non-existent soundproofing in the hideous rooms made sleep an impossiblity. Bizzarely, everybody made an early start with televisions on full blast and workmen hammering from around 6.30am. According to the hotel booklet the disco is on every night except Wednesdays - we were there on a Wednesday. If flying to or from Holguin, the Villa el Bosque - where we stayed our first night - is superficially less up-market but infinity better. And another thing, Hotel Pernik does not have hot water and the cold comes on only occasionally in a trickle. Finally, when leaving, the reception staff (whom we had done nothing to offend) said they couldn't call us a taxi and we only got to the airport because a couple of local guys saved us by giving us a lift.

“not recommended but it's all you can get ”
I was in and out of this hotel a few times in the month of january 2013. The hotel has some decent rooms and some bad rooms. Depends on your luck. Just plain rooms. I encountered pretty much all the bad things posted by other reviewers. Do not assume that this is a safe hotel when it comes to break-ins and stealing. Things do happen and don't expect to be told so. Lot of tourists don't bother to report to police as of course they are flying in a few hours. If anything happens, it's more likely an inside job. Information is scarce in Cuba. Service was slow, inefficient, unorganized, you name it. Lot of rip off going on. Watch when they make your coffee. At the expreso machine they use same batch of coffee to make 3, 4 cups. Never run a tab. Pay each time you get something. Try to pay as close as what the cost is. If the cost is 5.25 and you give them a 20.00 bill, you might get change for 10.00 or not any change at all. Don't be fooled by their friendship. If you dont have the right amount then walk to the bar and pay there. And there is nothing you can do as they are very organized keeping track of inventory and cash flow. Avoid the staff and locals as much as you can. . You are a dollar sign. The less you disclose about yourself the better. It's nobody's business of your about. Questions like: Is your first time in Cuba? How many times have you been to Cuba? When did you arrive? When do you leave? They all have a purpose. Do not assume that if you are a foreigner you might get a better service because you tip. Actually, it'll be worse. You are in and out, the locals are there all the time. Therefore the locals get the preferential service. Of course! You tipped for everyone. Be tight with your money or your cheap hotel might become a very expensive one. The money is in your pocket and they need it more than you. They gotta deserve it. Otherwise, keep it in your pocket. You are not stupid if you dont tip. Dont be embarrassed. Cubans make way more than 15 dollars a month that they cry about. Expect loud music as it's main clientele are the locals. Nice swimming pool but dirty. Try to get information from other tourists but not tourists that have cubans friends. It helps to speak the language therefore avoid cubans that speak english. The decent cubans are busy with their life. All other ones are around you. I know it sounds scary but I enjoyed my stay in Holguin, Cuba. And I will go back. Unless you have some personal business, the city of Holquin doesnt really offer much. Mirador de Mayabe not worth the cab ride. 20 round trip, plus entrance and food is as bad as at pernick. Nightclubs usually packed with young men. Cabaret Nocturno, 10 dollars round trip cab ride from Pernick, 8 dollars to get in and you have to watch your pockets.

        “Close to the City ”
Our group of 8 stayed here for 5 days because of it's proximity to the city. I'm careful not to compare it to hotels found in other countries, but I can't help but give it a poor rating due to its lacking performance in some basic areas. The staff was indifferent to guests. The breakfast buffet and dining hall were not very clean. It was hard to get a good nights rest with the loud music from the pool and disco and one of us had a problem with ants in the bed. Poor bed, linens and pillow. Questionable clientele (read the other reviews) left me feeling a little uneasy about being there. We did, however, have hot water every day and the air conditioner in the room worked very well.

“BEWARE: Jineteras will steal your stuff ”
Hi everyone! I just want to give you a heads up on something that is becoming more and more frequent in many places in Cuba but in particular at Hotel Pernik where there are a lot of prostitues sleeping with old men from Quebec or other places. I know this is my own fault but I had left my purse unattended in the washroom for honestly one minute while changing from my bathing suit to clothes and the next thing I knew it was gone. I had a brand new camera stolen, a long with an MP3 player and 250 CUC. Anyways, I learned my lesson, NEVER LEAVE YOUR THINGS UNATTENDED even for one minute. The girls will watch you come in and target you as pray for an easy steal. The reason why I don't like this place is because there are SO many jineteras who are always looking for an easy way to make money. It is sad that I won't return here again because the music is fun and the pool is a great place to cool off while living in the city. If you do go here just be careful with your stuff and people trying to scam you. Also, dont be surprised with all the not so wonderful prostitues.

Cheap hotel with simple rooms. Once made for mass tourism meant for citizens from the former USSR. Rather heartless, but with a nice swimmingpool. Seems a good place for young people: 20 CUC/night/room. Even casas particulares are more expensive and at lower quality. I would recommend it to people travelling with a small purse. Remember: very basic.

“looked nice but we only tried the food - and we wouldn't come back”
This hotel looked international standard, so we tried the restaurant one evening, since the food at our nearby Hotel El Bosque was poor. There was only one restaurant, offering what is best described as a Cuban buffet, which is fine if you like tepid Cuban food I guess. Tepid rice and beans, heaps of stewed meat, heaps of boiled potato and eggs, cold flour fritters, cold sauteed shredded mixed vegetables, some salads, and small sugary cakes. They had wine and beer, but no cocktails. So the rooms may be nice here (I didn't try them) but it's neither international standard nor is it charmingly Cuban and personal (as you would find at a casa particulare) so I'd prefer to stay somewhere central where I can access a choice of restaurants. Good food is not easy to find in Cuba but it *is* possible.

        “Convenient for the hospital. ”
I had an enforced 5 night stay at this hotel. I was staying at the Paradisus Rio de Oro hotel but my wife required hospitalisation in Holguin and this hotel is conveniently located quite near to the hospital. I really only needed a bed and somewhere to park our suitcases, so on that level I got exactly what I required. A plug in the bath or sink would have been nice, a tap to fill the bath with would have been even better. Sadly, even if I'd had these little luxuries, they wouldn't be much use as there was never any hot water. There was a shower, but this could only manage a dribble of water. Washing was only possible with a flannel and cold water. Bed was large and reasonably comfortable. Neither bedside lamp worked so a trip down the length of the room was required to turn off the light nearest the bed. The miniscule TV worked but was placed on a bedside table facing away from the bed. Remote control never worked. Air conditioner was stuck through the window but was very effective. Curtains were fixed shut so the room was always dark, which bought out the cockroaches. The room door was louvred so it let in all the noise. Particularly annoying as my room was right near the reception desk. Breakfast was included which was just about OK. Same thing everyday and not particularly tasty. Cockroaches very visible in the dining room. Pool bar was quite spacious and overlooked a large swimming pool. Open 24 hours for drinks and snacks. Entertainment around the pool of an evening is best described as 'interesting'. Prices are reasonable but, given the lack of facilities, could not be considered good value. Best hotel in Holguin, apparently.

I stayed at Hotel Pernik for 7 nights. I found it average but for the price was good. There was variety for breakfast but was a concern for me as there was lots of fruit flies and that turned me off the fruits. The pool was closed for most of the week and I had to go elsewhere. I showed up at the Pernik and getting a room for me was easy but I had difficulty with processing my payment. All in all my experience was good to say.

“Average - but could easily be so much better ”
Booking as part of a partial package through a Cuban agency, I am unaware of the exact cost of my one night B&B accommodation, but it seemed reasonable value. My room was satisfactory, being clean and tidy, with a working a/c unit and television. Breakfast was an extensive buffet, surprisingly, by 0710hrs there were well over 50 diners, although I seemed to be the only tourist; the others were all Cuban workers, as none were with their families on holiday. Disappointingly the internet room was again not working; it costs CUC$6 per hour via an ETECSA card, which is a standard facility throughout the island in hotels. The Pernik could be so much better with just a little more care and attention to detail; for example, why not obtain up to date information leaflets etc about Holguin for all the rooms?

i've stayed here twice & had no problems. i read about people having stuff stolen etc...don't be an idiot & leave your purse, money or anything of value unattended. the restaurant varma had decent food for very cheap. $1 beers, bottled water, pop, etc. $6 bottles of rum & vodka. all the staff was very friendly to me. i never had anything stolen from my room & i left my cameras & camcorder in my room visible to cleaning staff. i made sure i tipped my waiters, bar staff & cleaning people for the average salary in cuba is $17\month so there is no reason you can't afford to tip! everyone in the hotel treated me well. i had 2 cuban girls i met a year before stay with me in the hotel both times i was there & they were treated well. i got an ear infection on xmas day & my 2 girls & a hotel taxi took me to the hospital where a doctor looked at me in 5 minutes & gave me a prescription & i got it all FREE! no charge to see doctor or for drugs. the taxi was $3. the hotel is loud for there is a public pool that serves alcohol & food. it also has water activities throughout the day. there are 3 bars in the hotel as well as 2 restaurants. this hotel is a $3 cab ride from downtown & there is always taxis available. this is not a tourist all-inclusive hotel so don't expect it to be 5 star or 3 star. my room both times had a clean shower, toilet seat & if there was a problem it would be fixed asap or they would gladly move me to another room. this is not a hotel for a romantic getaway because it is 57kn from the beach. the music is blaring from the poolside or the bar upstairs for 2\3 of the day. there are many tourists with cuban dates & this is very common there. you don't want your hotel to have local people in it then go to the all-inclusive resorts. this hotel is for those people who don't want to be with other tourists. this has local flavor all over it & if you don't want local families & beautiful girls strolling around poolside go somewhere else. this hotel accomidates both locals & tourists. too many people need to lower there standards, this isn't the hilton!!!!

“Good value, middle of road hotel, by Cuban standards ”
This hotel is a ?stand by? place to stay in Holguin that has its own rundown sort of charm. This sprawling place could use a coat of paint and it always seems to be undergoing some form of renovation, so they are trying. The pool is big, you can have good swim here and there is lots of room to sit around and get a tan. I paid the high season rate for a single, CUC 26 (buffet breakfast included ? but very uninspiring fare). The room was clean, and properly serviced each day. The A/C worked. The service at the poolside bar was slow but friendly. At least there were no really obnoxious guests during the time I was here and people basically leave you alone to do your own thing. The downstairs restaurant at dinnertime was surprisingly good by Cuban standards. The waitress actually managed to cope as guests filled up the kitschy room. Service required a half hour, the food was good and not too greasy and the price reasonable. There is a Tienda that actually has reasonable inventory of basic items and clothing. The clerks here were helpful. It was always possible to get a taxi immediately outside. The workers at the check-in desk are rather indifferent and only printed out a proper detailed for me after I insisted (I demanded to have more than high credit card slip as evidence of payment). When I asked about Internet usage, I was told that it was not working. There is Cedeca here where you can change money when the banks are closed. This hotel is generally good value for money, if you don?t expect to be pampered.

“Probably one of the best hotels in town Holguin, still not good enough... ”
Unfortunately you cannot really have an idea about the quality of the hotels in Cuba by looking at the stars. It is actually weird, if you think, all these city hotels (not the resorts at the seaside) are owned by the state and as there is not real competition, so there is no reason to give fake stars to the hotels. Anyway, this hotel is really average - if you are staying in Holguin just for one day or two, you can stay here but if you are aiming to have a few days relaxing holiday, you are wrong here. The rooms are average, maybe the bed sheets are clean but the bathroom and the rest, you should just close your eyes. The best thing is the Mojito at the bar for the standard price as in all other state hotels in Cuba.

Were sent here when our flight from Holguin was cancelled, so arrived in a bad mood at the outset. Check-in was fairly efficient. Room was not pleasant - large enough, but tired verging in grubby. We didnt seem to get bitten by any bugs, so it may have all been in our imagination, but we got very little sleep because of the sense that the room might have other wee occupants besides us! On the plus side, the toilet had a seat (although not actually attached to the toilet) and there was a shower (albeit without a hook to hold it in place). The outside corridor looked like a building site. It was noisy until late. The pool looked ok but, like the restaurant, we weren't there at times that allowed us to sample them personally (thank goodness). On the other hand, they did provide a roof over our heads in an emergency, and we are grateful for that.

That's right, party at the Pernik because it's hard to get a good night sleep here. An on-site disco goes to the wee hours when open and a DJ at the pool who likes to blast the muzak staring at 9am when nobody is swimming and everyone is still in bed trying to recover from the night before. A few of us blasted the front desk and put an end to that. Other than that, a decent hotel at a great rate. Currently 20 cuc for single and 30 cuc for double occupodo. Like other hotels some rooms are better than others. I asked to be changed after the first night and found my new digs to be more suitable and refreshing. The hotel has a grand sized pool with a snack/drink bar beside it. A restaurant is housed in the basement serving adequate Cuban fare. Also a buffet restaurant at night on the main floor. At 12cuc a pop though I never bothered to bother. A 3cuc taxi ride will get you to the city center unless you feel like a 25-30 minute walk. I would stay here again mainly for the price and the pool.

“No change at the Hotel Pernik - but still very good value for money ”
For this visit I turned up without booking, and requested a single room bed and breakfast. the rate was the CUC20 featured on the reception counter, and I booked two nights. I was offered, without requesting it, a special room 211, which was an "artists room" that contained many of the works of a a cuban painter and this certainly added to the atmosphgere in this spacious room. The colour TV was wall mounted, and the wall behind it featured many of the artist's works and photographs; one photograph showed him receiving a commendation from Fidel himself! The bathroom was specious, and included a bath/shower; hot water was usually available. The telephone seemd not to work, certainly people who tried to call me at the hotel said that it rang out, but was never answered. Breakfast was an excellent buffet on one day, and a much less impressive table order menu on the other day. if there are few desks, the buffet is not arranged. The Hotel Pernik is a brisk 30 minute walk to the city centre, if you do not want to walk, bici taxis are always available, at CUC2 for the journey. They are not the safest method of transport available..... Despite its faults (still no internet) the Pernik is excellent value.

        “renovations done”
some renos were done to the hotel so it looks better. they had 2 fashion shows & a concert on the roof. BAMBOLEO(not my music) a popular cuban band had the placed packed with people dancing & singing. it's load & lots of locals in pool area until 8pm when it closes. staff was great & everything still cheap. the varna restaurant was now open in the day for an all you can eat for 5CUC. no issues with things missing. lots of older foreign men & women with their young dates & as i said lots of locals poolside. this stay was a good one & other then concert night the hotel wasn't blaring music from the roof or pool area after 9pm...it was my 3rd time there & most pleasant stay yet...internet was down again but the computer was new as were the ones at the internet cafe just of parque garcia...sometimes i get the sense that some negative posters get jealous of the beautiful cuban men & women running around poolside..no sports team this time...buffett the usual stuff but i always have 2 omellettes.

        “Highly recommend! ”
On a recent trip to Holguin with 21 other Americans, we stayed at this hotel for 8 days, The service was very good, the food was good, and the overall expreience was great, Cold a/c in our room, and plenty of hot water (though not drinkable). Beds were OK, but not terrible. Remember that this is Cuba and they are not privy to really nice things, so consider that when you travel to Holguin.

        In the City of Holguin
This hotel, located in the modern area of the city of Holguín, is an attractive, sober and elegant facility with features suitable for fully enjoying your holidays. A wide range of recreational options inside and outside the hotel are harmonically complemented with tours of sites of historic, cultural, anthropological and tourist interest. Among them are Loma de la Cruz (The Hill of the Cross), La Periquera de Historia (current Museum of History), the San Isidro Cathedral and the Museum of Natural Sciences. Visits are also organized to the town of Gibara, the Bariay National Monument and Park and Pesquero Beach.
