    Varadero Airport

Juan Gualberto Gomez Airport was built in 1989 and inaugurated by Fidel Castro,[3] thus replacing the old Varadero airport located in Santa Marta, currently known as Kawama Airport. The airport was named after a journalist, fighter for the Cuban Independence and black rights activist in Cuba Juan Gualberto Gómez (1854–1933). The terminal building has shops for tourists (including rum, cigars, T-shirts, books, carvings, pharmaceuticals), a large departures lounge cafeterias and a VIP lounge. A VIP card is available by paying $30/person to the local tour company representative. This allows the departing passenger to bypass the queues for check-in, have an agent take your departure tax to the correct official for you, and bypass any lines for passport control. The passenger is then taken to the VIP lounge which provides free food and drink (including alcoholic beverages).[4] The ground handling equipment is imported mainly from North America. There are four jet bridges, but air stairs are used for the remaining aircraft parking spaces on the apron by the terminal. Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport (IATA: VRA, ICAO: MUVR), formerly known as Varadero Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto de Varadero), is an international airport serving Varadero, Cuba and the province of Matanzas. The airport is located closer to the city of Matanzas than to Varadero. The closest airport to Varadero is Kawama Airport. In 2009, the airport handled 1.28 million passengers,[2] making it the second busiest airport in Cuba after José Martí International Airport in Havana.

“Do not go to Club Karey”
We booked a ten day trip from 15th- to the 25th. What a dump, dangerous, unsafe, dirty, ect... Doors hanging of the hinges, broken ceramic tiles sticking out of the main lobby floors perfect for ten stitches under the feet... Live electrical wires sticking out of the sidewalks... the buildings are falling apart very poor condition. No toilet paper in the rooms, no towels in the rooms, The bed sheets smelt like sweat. The cook in the morning would hit a pitcher for tips. Luckily everybody that arrived on our flight got together and complained to Sunwing and they changed us to another Hotel. Before leaving Club Karey they did not give us our 50 dollar deposit on the two beach towels. The staff was great but the place is a dump.

“Believe the reviews - very dirty resort ”
I had read the reviews before booking and chose to take a chance and hopefully save some money. I really wanted to go to Club Karey and have a good experience so that I could write a good review. My mom and I arrived during the night - the room was filthy. There was a huge bug (cockroach?) that we had to kill shortly after arriving and there was no water in the room to drink. The shower worked and there was hot water (yay!). The bathroom window was open when we got there so I was hoping that the bug got in that way and maybe all the dirt that was everywhere...? The next morning we left a $5 tip for the maid and hoped she would clean up the room (I was thinking that maybe no one had stayed in that particular room for a while and that was why it was so very dirty.) Unfortunately this wasn't the case. The maid did up our beds and made a swan on our bed but that was it. The floor was still filthy. The glasses that were in the room looked like they and smears and hard water stains on them too. Thankfully the weather was nice the next day so we went looking for a way to contact home to let them know we arrived ok. There are no options to contact Canada from this hotel so we walked over to Club Kawama and noticed how much nicer this resort looked from the outside. We inquired about switching but that hotel was full. We spent the afternoon on the beach, which was nice - but there was NO ONE around. We wondered where all the people were. When we met with our Sunwing rep in the afternoon, there were quite a few of us who were unhappy with the resort. Especially the families who had come and found that the resort was unsafe for kids and nothing for them to do. We ended up having to stay another night because Sunwing wasn't able to receive confirmation from Canada on the price difference before the office closed. The whole resort had a dirty, smelly feel to it wherever you went. We could hardly eat because the dining room was so dirty (windows were so dirty you could hardly see out of them). After we tried eating supper that last night the only thing left to do was get into the Rum Punch and Pina Colodas to make everything better. We packed up the next morning and called Sunwing, made our choice to transfer to Breezes Bella Costa and left. Our holiday was good after that.

      “Stay away!”
I was at Club Karey from Dec 24-31/12 and I will never, ever go there again! To start with, my flight arrived around lunch time, so there was a wait for the room. I had expected this at it was not my first trip south. I was told the room would be ready about 3pm, but the sign said check in was 4pm, so I fully expected to wait until then. By 5pm, I was asking how much longer the wait would be and was told "soon". While waiting, several others were in the lobby complaining to reception about their rooms. One man came in and said flatly that "nothing worked" in his room. There were enough complaints that I and several others spoke to the Sunwing rep about changing hotels. She was looking into this for us and had been at the hotel for a couple hours when we spoke with her. I continued to wait, with about a dozen others for our rooms. 6pm came and went and still no rooms. People were getting frustrated, overtired, all talking to the Sunwing lady about the wait. Then two other Sunwing reps arrived at the hotel, picked up our lady saying there was an "emergency" they needed to handle and that they had to leave. I asked her, "what about us, what about our rooms or changing hotels?" She said we would get our rooms soon. I asked if it would be that night and she said yes and then left. I found this totally unbelievable as I and many others had been waiting about 6 hours for our rooms. And the Sunwing rep ditched us without helping to resolve the problem! I finally got my room about 7pm. When I booked my trip, I knew it was a 3 star. I have been to Cuba once before as well as trips to Mexico and the DR. I didn't expect a 4 or 5 star. What I did expect was a clean room and bed, hot water, simple food (not fancy but edible), that sort of thing. I don't believe my expectations were unreasonable. Unfortunately, none of these things were to be found at Club Karey. My experience at Club Karey went like this: - 84 bed bug bites on my legs - ants in the vanilla syrup (in a plastic squeeze bottle) provided for the ice cream - no hot water in my room for the first 4 days I was there and NO response from the staff when I went to the lobby to advise them of this - no lights in my room except the bathroom and one large light in the entryway; nothing in the room itself. I did ask for a bedside lamp, but never did get one. - no drinking water (actually, nothing for drinking at all) provided in the room - the bed was rock hard and you could feel the metal poking into your back. I folded up the spare blanket and put it under the sheets to pad it a bit, but it was still terrible. The pillow was about an inch thick and not comfortable at all. I was stiff and sore all week from the bed. - When I picked up the second blanket from the side table, there were dead bugs on it and an hard spot like something had been spilled on it and dried. It was clearly NOT clean! - food available only during set hours, so if you miss a meal, there is no where to get something to eat unless you go into Varadero; you have to wait for the next meal time - the menu for lunch and dinner is virtually identical day after day; same food for both meals - breakfast is limited and usually includeds last nights leftovers, but they do make omelets, which was great, but one day, they didn't have eggs - the snack bar has hamburgers, hotdogs, ham and cheese sandwich, pizza and fries. When they have it open and when they have food there. It is open from lunchtime until they run out of food, usually mid-afternoon. The ham and cheese was good the first time I had it, so I came back the next day, but was told "no ham". - if the snack bar closes early because it's out of food, there is no where to eat until about 630 when dinner starts, if it starts on time. All times are flexible for meals and on the nights the resort was busier we had to line up and wait to get in for supper. Both nights I had over an hour wait. - At more than one meal, there was meat I didn't eat because it tasted bad...as in going bad, not poorly prepared. The sandwiches I got from the bar the night I left were a small square bun with a piece of cheese and a piece of ham. The ham was sour! - my room was in the building farthest from the lobby and almost a kilometre walk, so I had to make sure that, when I went back to my room, I took several glasses of water with me, otherwise it was a hike back to the lobby or pool bar to get a drink. - despite having no hot water in my room, there was a waterfall outside my door for about 12 hours when a pipe or something broke on the roof of my building. Once this was fixed however, I got hot water for the first time. I arrived on Monday and my first hot shower was late Friday afternoon. - the walk from my room to the lobby and back is poorly lit and about half has no lights at all. The resort pathways don't go to the room so you have to walk on the road, which is under construction and has hazards to be avoided (mounds of dirt, pipes, other metal stuff and the shoulder has a sharp drop in places). In the dark, you've got to be extra careful. By the morning of the fourth day, I actually wrote an email to Sunwing telling them how unhappy I was with the resort and that if I could have the opportunity to return home that day, I would hop on a plane without hesitation. It was that bad. I can't believe Sunwing actually includes this place in their line up and sends people there. I wouldn't even give this "resort" a single star. Between the bed bugs, no hot water, bad/dirty food, the resulting diarrhea, it was a terrible trip. I don't feel like I had a holiday at all. Please save yourself the grief and go somewhere else! I've been to a 4 star in Varadero and it was a completely different trip. I will be writing to Sunwing to register my complaint and ask for a refund. And from what I heard from others at the resort "Club Skarey", I won't be alone.

      “Wouldn't wish this on a dog ”
We should have read and believed the reviews written for Club Karey, however chose not to. Big mistake. This hotel has got to be the worst we have ever endured and this is was our 4 trip to Varadero. The hotel was only to glad to put us up, but for us to be able to endure was totally out of the question. There are no guides for handicap persons, such as ramps, hand rails, or so much as an elevator etc. The room was filthy, bedsprings coming out of mattress. We didn't even put our luggage on the floor. The lighting was extremely poor and what there was of windows, looked as if they hadn't been cleaned since the hotel was built. The toilet - couldn't be flushed in thetraditional manmner; you had to lift the lid and do a manual flush from inside the tank. The water was cold for washing, towels hard, food was never hot. Not even if you got there within first 20 minutes of opening. The coffee was cold to like warm. The smell in the dining room was a stale, moldy, stench that literally made you sick to your stomach . We were advised by another couple to "go to buy your food and eat in town" We were fortunate enough that we had an excellent travel rep for our travel company who got us out of that dump within 22 hours. It was enough to endure the torture we did. We will never go back to that hotel and we would certainly hope that this message will save others from making that same mistake. My husband has a very bad back and cannot do steps very well. All we got was 48 narrow winding steps up to the bedroom and of course if you wanted to go anywhere, you also had to come down; then to eat, ir was another 35 steps up to the dining room. We feel truly sorry for anyone who "wants to go cheaper" and ends up here. The saving is not worth the agony. We will nevervgo back to that hotel.

“TERRIBLE-DO NOT RUIN YOUR VACATION BY STAYING AT THIS HOTEL ”
We are far from picky and we are also aware that we have not paid a lot but this hotel is beyond any expectations of a nightmare. We enjoyed the sun,the beach and the nice people we met at the hotel but this establishment is no more then 0.5 stars. if our experience could help other people ....my best advice would be to stay away from this hotel. The only good thing is the location-we had a room with ocean view and the hotel is located right at the beach. The rest : ROOM: We had to switch after the first night because the room was no different then a prison cell with a strong mold smell, there were cracks and even holes in the walls. I got bitten by bed bugs and was barely able to sleep, the bathroom was in a disastrous condition so I decided to have my shower in the ocean I tried to have the room switched right after I saw it but I was so tired to realize that without a tip nothing could get done, In the morning I tipped the lady at the Front desk and all the sudden we were able to move. The new room was a bit better and in a livable condition, the bathtub was covered in rust and the windows of the villa where the room was located were never cleaned but overall the room was fine compared to what we initially had. The HK service was poor and they never cleaned the sand from the floor, not to mention that one of the cleaning lady screamed on us because she was looking for presents supposedly left for her in the room by the previous occupants. FOOD-There are no words to describe the food.I agree it is Cuba but the food was so terrible that for the entire stay we ate out and at the snack bar nearby the pool. The restaurant is dirty and has a weird smell, the forks and the spoons had strange stains on them, the selection was nonexistent and stayed the same for our entire stay. BARS-The bartenders were overworked because of the constantly drunk Russian tourists, poor selection of drinks and the tables in the lobby bar remained with the sticky stains for at least 5 days. ANIMATION-nonexistent,supposedly there was an animator on site but he was taking care of playing the music at the pool and walking around and inviting himself on your table and then just sitting there....??? In conclusion- pay some extra bucks and do not ruin your vacation by staying in this hotel. Also, we always tip well because we both work in the service industry but we felt that the staff pushes a bit for a tip which should be given when you are happy with the service and not because you feel sorry for the someone....

“NEEDS TO BE SHUT DOWN ”
We have been to Cuba many times mostly to 3 star resorts and several times to Varadero. I read all the time you get what you pay for and remeber this is Cuba which i agree with . But i have stayed at the resorts all around club karey mostly 3 star and never had any problems in anyway. club karey is in ruins there is no lights at night and the sidewalks and stair rails are either broken or missing all together. There were older people there that were afraid to even walk the resort. The food was the worst i had ever seen and to get a drink other than rum or coke almost inpossible could not get a coffee at 8 in morning they were out, even if you you could eat the food you had to fight the flys off of it first. After the second day with no hot water not even luke warm we decide to leave. We went down the road to another 3 star hotel and had no issues. This is the first review ever wrote an wish to WARN everyone to stay clear of club karey. over ten couples moved out the same week. THIS PLACE NEEDS TO BE SHUT DOWN

      “Worst experience ever ”
Honestly, I have so many different examples of why this hotel should be listed as a one star, not a three but truthfully, we changed hotels after the second day and I really just don't want to relive the time we spent at Club Karey. Suffice it to say, the food is atrocious and the hotel itself is run down and unclean. It's really too sad too because our room was twenty feet from the ocean, a beautiful view.....except that the windows were filthy and right outside our window were the two hundred cigarette butts thrown out the window by the reception staff. But .... I digress. My advice? Don't stay here. And honestly? We're not that picky about our accommodation. We usually just treat it as a place to sleep. We read the earlier reviews and thought that people were just being nasty because they were dissatisfied with one or two things. There are always people who just can't be satisfied. But we honestly just didn't feel comfortable here, for many reasons. Had we not been able to move to another hotel, we both would've opted to fly home on the third day. Spend a little bit extra and stay elsewhere.

      “Most Disasterous Vacation Ever ”
I'm not exactly sure where to begin with this. When I first got off the trans from the airport in front of this Club Karey Resort (lol) I knew I was in trouble. I went to the lobby to check in and was wearing two knee braces (that I always wear). The first room they gave me was a twenty minute walk towards club Kawama and the room had neither a phone or a mini fridge as promised in your brochures.I told the guy this was not suitable at all so back to the lobby we go. They then gave me a room just past the tennis courts and the fellow tooks my bags there and I went and had a drink. When I got to this room, again no phone (even to the front desk) and no mini fridge to keep your drinks and water cold. Plus the toilet had no seat and you had to reach into the tank to flush it. This just isn't right and I told the front desk of this and it took 5 days to get it fixed. On to the pool bar. It closes up at 5pm and you have to walk 1/3 of a mile to get any refreshments. Why would you close down the pool bar at 5pm when there is 50-60 people still looking for refreshments from the pool and the beach. Makes no sense at all plus they don't serve beer in the bar they send you too. Not everyone drinks hard liquor. To top it off, there was never any ice available for your drinks and they wouldn't serve them once they ran out of ice. Again they would send you to the lobby bar if you needed or wanted a drink of any kind except beer. Let's get on to the food. After the first 4 meals, other than breakfast, I had to go out to eat everyday because they kept putting the exact same food not eaten at lunch back out for dinner and if it wasn't eaten up that night they would put it back out for lunch the next day. This is absolutley riddiculous. I marked a potato salad with a knife to varify this and sure enough the same salad was put out for 5 consecutive lunches and dinners. Same with the pasta dishes (hot and cold). Because there was never any beers available, I was forced to go into Varadero and purchase my own to drink as even one night while sitting in the lobby bar (24hr one) I asked the bartender for a beer and he yelled at me and call me a stupid A$$ for asking. A young lady I was sitting with told me to turn the guy in for being rude and disrespectfull, but what good would it do I told her. According to your listing for this property on your website it says all beers and domestic drinks are available 24hrs a day and this is definitley untrue. Now, two people twisted their ankles badly while I was there and low and behold, this resort didn't have even have basic first aid kit available. Thank god I brought one with me and could help the girl out. They didn't even have ice to help bring down the swelling for god's sake. Plus god help it if there is a fire there, there were NO extinguisher's anywhere. Back to my second room, I forgot something. The first night I went back to this room and walked in and turned the light on, to my surprise there were two lizzards scurrying around the walls by the bed. It took me an hour to chase them out the door but I managed to get them out. Almost forgot about that one, lol. When I arrived, there was no representive from conquest available as it was his DAY OFF. What's with that. I had planned to play golf every second day but had to waste the first two days waiting till a rep showed up to be able to even book my golf. Plus on the second day when the rep did show up and I expressed my concerns to him, he promised to move me from Club Karey to Club Kawama the next day but to call him back later that day at 3pm to confirm this move. I called him exactly at 3 and he say's there was no room yet later that evening when we went to Club Kawama to the disco, I stopped at the front desk and was told YES there was room but they were never asked about it. So in other words, your rep did nothing to address my concerns at all. This resort is in terrible shape. There are 5' pieces of rebar sticking out of the sand down on the beach. There are holes everywhere. This property is not even a 2* property. Now the coud de gras!!! As i was checking out after this nightmare, the bellboy comes running back to the lobby accusing me of stealing a TOWEL from my room. I open all my bags in front of him and we go thru them just in case it got packed by mistake. No towel anywhere in my bags. But he still accuses me of stealing it and goes and tells the manager about this. She comes out and demands I pay for this towel or she will cancel my transport bus to the airport which was due any minute. I told her I didn't have their towel and the bell boy had gone thru my luggage and not found one. I told her at this point I was not paying for any towel and that she better not mess with my bus causing me to miss my return flight. Thankfully the bus showed up 3 mins later and I boarded it and left this whole nightmare behind. Now, considering what this cost me to book, plus having to pay for all my own meals, plus having to buy my own beers ($2.50 per bottle even in the stores) this modest vacation set me back about $1500 for a barely 2 star resort. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE Thank you

Hey everyone, I just got back from my stay in club Karey and let me tell u it was HELL...now im as open minded as the next person and did read the other reviews on this site but thought maybe it was just people who expected more of a 5 star at a low cost...i knew i wasnt getting a 5 star but i thought i would be getting what i was paying for and what was advertised....but i was wrong! Unless u are up for a quiet elderly stay...then its perfect! However there is NO nightlife, NO great food selection, NO stocked fridge, NO speedy service--everything seemed to be broken if u asked for it, NO 24 hour snacks, the restaurants were solidly booked, SMELLY ROOMS, SLOW room service for broken toilets or showers for sure, NO swim up BAR, little programmed activities...def not for children...and BROKEN phones, computers, and anything else that we asked for seemed to have the same response--ITS BROKEN...oh and the whole steps away from the beach...this is true if u don't mind a 3.5 foot step off a cliff to the beach....choose somewhere else u will definitely thank me

“Rustic resort in need of an upgrade ”
Visited Club Karey from 3-10 February, 2014 and it was quite an experience. I will start out with some positive notes. The resort is located along an amazing stretch of beach in Varadero and is just a short cab or bus ride into town. The staff were very friendly here and always had a smile or laugh for you. The room my friend and I stayed in was essentially a spacious stand alone villa, about 500 sq.ft. Most international guests were friendly and engaging - although many of the Russian visitors seemed cold and aloof. Unfortunately there were negatives, a lot of them. Sunwing considers Club Karey a three star resort - actually it is more like one or two stars. Despite several trips to the front desk, we didn't have hot water in our room the entire week. We never did get a beach towel since for days on end they had no clean ones available. The buffet restaurant was bland and repetitious with no labels on food items in any language. One Muslim guest from Ontario was very upset to learn he had been unknowingly eating pork for several days. Breakfast was fine since eggs, coffee, juice and fruit were always available but lunch and supper became awful as the week wore on. We did have a decent meal at the resort's only à la carte restaurant and one night a roasted turkey was very tasty at the buffet. The town of Varadero has many fine inexpensive restaurants. For example, a roasted half-chicken dinner, with beer and a tip was only 7 CUC per person. Night entertainment at the resort is virtually non-existent. The only evening show promised was eventually cancelled when the stereo system broke. This was a common theme at this Islazul-run property. I have been to Cuba five times and this was my worst resort experience yet. I know this wasn't Canada but Club Karey is rustic even by Cuban standards. It has so much potential but needs many upgrades to restore its former glory.

“Deceived by Club Karey - January 19 to 26 ”
I knew by reading reviews that I could not expect a 5 stars hotel, but upon arriving in my room, it was just awful to look at it (drapes hanging, bad smell, etc.). My daughter had a better room, so we exchanged rooms. The patio doors were not opening, but with Vaseline and bug spray, I made it works. First thing that they should have is a phone in every single room! We had none. What if an emergency happens? I am an older person. We were in block 21, and it is a long walk to the lobby. I think Sunwing should remove that hotel from their list. It is in dire need of repairs. On the positive side, the maids did a good job cleaning my room every day. The food was what we expected in a 2 stars, not 3 stars hotel. The beach is beautiful, but the swimming pool is not heated. It was awfully cold when we were there. The masseur is a very good one, professional, smiling and he knows his profession. The sun was there the whole week, so I enjoyed sunning and relaxing before coming back to the cold weather of Canada! I was at Playa Caleta 2 years ago, and this where we should have returned. No more Club Karey for me!

      “Very Tired Resort ”
Just returned from Club Karey on February 3, 2014. The rooms and buildings are in need of renovations badly. We were lucky enough to have a huge balcony overlooking the ocean (room 2312) so we could avoid the room as much as possible, The beaches and water are beautiful, dont expect any evening entertainment as this resort has next to nothing to offer guests after dinner. The price is good if you are just looking for a great location directly on the beach. Double decker bus ($5.00 all day pass) stops in front of the hotel every 15 minutes to take people into town where you will find tons of flea markets and shopping. Staff are very friendly and you will feel very safe everywhere you go. Food is poor at best but you can find something to eat everyday.

      “Potential ”
We just returned from a week in Cuba (my wife and I, 3 year old, 16 year old), most of which was at Club Karey. First off, we are not snobby Canadian travellers, nor do we need, or expect the same amenities as home, and we LOVE Cuba! The best thing of any resort in Cuba is always the staff, and Club Karey has some of the nicest we've met. If you want to know anything about the country in general, talk with Renee or Alex. At first glance, Club Karey is obviously run down, and in the heart of some major construction directly across the street. The beach is washed away, so you sit up on the sand, and must traverse a sand dune (down) to access the water, which really isn't a big deal. The beach is quite rocky if your standing in the water, however the water is the same as anywhere on Varadero(beautiful). There were very few people in the resort when we were there (about 38), and this made for a quiet beach, and no line ups at the buffet etc. We started in rooms in the building 8, which were nice and quiet, and ended up moving to building 13 ( right on the main beach). This turned out to be a HUGE mistake. I play in a band, and enjoy loud music, however the volume they play the music at, to a deserted resort will make you cringe! You can have ocean front view which are nice, and most of the rooms are a 2 star at best. I really don't like to write about the bad things, however the one absolutely intolerable issue was the mosquitos!!! All four of us ended up in one room briefly, as the mosquitos in the room were relentless. We know Cuba well, and know there are a plethora of bugs etc., however your room should be a safe haven of sorts. After 5 nights, my children looked like they had chicken pox, and we sadly succombed to moving to Villa Tortuga down the road. Club Karey has a ton of potential for a small resort, and you could make a go of it without children. Pros are quiet beach, friendly staff, close to Varadero city. CONS are the mosquitos in the rooms!!!!!, buffet, construction, and gerally run down (easy fixes!). We will return to say hi to the staff, but probably not to stay again, unless bug issues are addressed.

“Substandard - even by Cuban standards! ”
We just returned from a week at Club Karey (Oct. 4 -11) formerly called 'Punta Blanca'. We arrived at the hotel at night - my first impression was that of darkness since the property was so poorly lit. Not all outdoor lamps were lit. This is noteworthy since the property is a group of club houses with no interconnecting hallways. You walk outdoors to go anywhere on the property. There is a paved path but it is not well lit at night. There is no barrier between the desolate street & the hotel property. You can only hope that security personnel are close by in case an unauthorized person walks onto the property. They do keep watch over the property. Still, there is wide open access from the street which is completely desolate at night since there is nothing but a water canal across the street. We had booked 2 rooms. We were informed that the phone line in one of the rooms was not working. We discovered there was no phone jack in the room to connect the phone. The phone was there only as an accessory. Fortunately, the phone in the other room was working. However, when we called reception & asked to be connected to a local external phone number, we were told they do not offer telephone service for external calls. I asked why & no further explanation was given. I asked on a different day at reception about the phone service & a different employee gave me an explanation. They have phone line issues throughout the hotel. When they select a certain room number to connect a call, a different room is reached, or, the call rings through to other rooms in addition to the intended hotel room so that possibly other hotel guests can listen in on your call. As for calls outside the hotel, their system for calculating the charge per minute is not working so they have no way of accurately charging for phone calls. Hence, they have decided to not connect any calls from hotel rooms through to external numbers. Even my Cuban friends were disappointed with the lacking phone service. They will however, make necessary business calls on your behalf from reception such as if you need to confirm your departure bus & flight schedule. However, if you have friends or family in Cuba or elsewhere & you're counting on the convenience of calling them from your hotel room or being reached by them at your hotel room - this is not the place for you. Mosquitoes were always in the rooms. We would kill anywhere between 10 & two dozen each night before going to bed. It is difficult to keep them out since they hover around the doorways. Construction is in progress on the water canal walls across the street. They are drilling holes to allow for drainage so that rising water does not flood the street. If your hotel room faces the street, sleeping in is not an option nor will it be for the next several weeks.

“Club Karey varadero - a mixed feeling ”
I have mixed feelings about Club Karey, Varadero ... Just to give you a bit of our background ... 8th time in Cuba, 5th time in Varadero, family of 4, adults on the 40s, kids 6-7 y.o. This time we stayed from Dec 23 - Dec 31, 2011 We read a lot of horror stories before going there and we saw the ranking of the hotel (54 out of 58 in Varadero) so we were aware what to expect. The hotel is more like a 2 stars hotel but it has some 3 stars features (tennis court, gym, massages, etc...). People are nice and helpful, like almost all Cubans .... They are ready to help you and I never felt like they were begging for tips. The resort is in fact a lot of villas with 2 levels with 6 rooms per level. Many of them closed ... Villas are quite clean and right on the beach. Beds are comfortable and clean. There is a mini fridge in the room. No issues with the bathroom or the hot water. There is a safe box, but you have to pay for if you want to use it. It is located outside of the city. You would need to take the hop-on hop-off bus to get to the city or to the peninsula (5 CUC all day). Or you can take a taxi - 3 CUC to the beginning of the city or 7 CUC to the other end (where the International Clinic is). There is a pool, a disco (we never went) and a small store in the resort. There is a restaurant - all you can eat and a à la carte restaurant as well (we never went there neither). I don`t know if is too much entertainment as the evenings we were in town. There is a great guy, Toni who plays with the kids during the day ... There is no kids club The beach is great, not too wide and with nice sand. The water is deep after 1-2 meters, so great for adults who want to swim. For small kids is a bit difficult to stay only on the stripe where the water is not deep. Otherwise the sea is great. You can see daily pelicans diving to fish, which is a great show. The biggest weakness is food. Yes, I know, is Cuba :) ... But this time was the worst experience. Not the taste, as the cook is good. All the food we tasted was good. BUT the options are very poor and sometimes you cannot find a choice. Finally we always found something to eat. Papayas are great :). The bad part is that what is not used at noon, you find at the dinner :(. If you are not looking for great food, you can deal with it ... The restaurant is not the cleanest and sometimes you have to wait a lot to be served (napkins, forks, glasses, etc.). There is one bar at the reception (doesn`t have beer). And the is a bar in between the pool and the beach. We were very disappointing that one day they were without beer. But we went to the store and bought some, so not such a big issue. And the good news is that the next day they finally installed a draft beer machine (before it was only in cans). Varadero changed a lot, really a lot and it is nice to walk on the main street. And the Cuban taxis are quite fun (the old cars from the 40s and 50s). Overall, for us, who were looking only for the sand and the sea it was ok, but I would not recommend this hotel. I would go again ONLY for a really crazy deal, not otherwise. It is not as bad as some others describe it ... but not really a place to admire neither :( I hope this helps as I was looking for feed-back about this hotel without too many success.

“Read this before you book at this resort. It may or may not be right for you. ”
We stayed here for a week in February and spent a lot of time with our friends at 2 other resorts, as well as time in the town of Varadero and also Cardenas, so we used Club Karey as a base. You can walk to Varadero along the beach in about 40 minutes and that is nice, there are some very good restaurants in town. Service/People The best part about this resort: the staff were very warm and helpful, and we spent some time getting to know some staff members and we enjoyed that very much. It helped that we could speak a bit of Spanish and so we could have some basic communication with people. That said, many staff spoke excellent English as well. We also met some very nice people who were guests there with us. We met people from Czech, Poland, Spain, other Canadians, and that was a lot of fun. The Lobby Bar was a great place to hang out and socialize. Odd that you could not get beer at the lobby bar, only wine and liquor. Food The Food was typical Cuban buffet fare. If you are a picky eater, you will probably have a hard time finding food you like at this hotel (and from what we understand, at many Cuban all-inclusive buffets). Every day there was fresh fruit and omelets made to order, as well as a variety of other offerings, but we stuck to the aforementionned and did just fine. Coffee was instant but there was excellent coffee at the Lobby Bar. Lunch and dinner: lots of fish, usually one other kind of meat, lots of salads, salad fixings. If you like fish and vegetables you will do just fine. Lots of cabbage, squash, tomatos, beets, fruits...all of which we really like. Had beef liver one day at lunch and I was in heaven! There was always pasta, rice and beans, plain rice, fresh bread. You could get a really good grilled hot dog sandwich at the Pool Bar but only during the daytime. The Pool Bar had beer on tap during the day, closed up sometime in the late afternoon. Had to wait until the Disco Bar opened at 8 to get another beer. The Italian a-la-carte restaurant was decent, there were only four of us in the restaurant, us and a couple from Prague, and we laughed a lot and had fun. Pasta and fish entrees were good, pizza was OK too. Casa de Al (Al Capone's house) was the other a-la-carte and the food there was excellent. You have to book the a-la-cartes with the hospitality lady who is in the lobby from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and she will give you a voucher for each. Make sure you do this as soon as you arrive. Also ask her for a voucher to go to Club Kawama. More about this later. Entertainment There was very little going on. The two entertainers were very nice, and I felt badly for them...they were at the hotel at least 12 hours a day and no one ever seemed to go to any activities. We basically had private salsa lessons (very fun) but sadly there was virtually no entertainment. The Disco Bar was deserted and the bartender usually sat and watched TV. The pool was very small and hardly ever used, but it seemed clean. Club Kawama We went to Club Kawama four or five times. It was much nicer and there was more going on. We had a voucher for the first day but no one ever asked to see it, we just kept going back there. The food was better, pool much nicer, and we saw a very good magic show. They also had a good traditional band that played over the lunch and dinner time at the buffet restaurant, and we enjoyed them. We were able to walk in and out through the front lobby and no one every questionned us, had drinks, food, etc. You can't just walk up to any hotel in Varadero as we learned when we tried to visit friends at a different resort, but Kawama seems to own Karey so you can do that here. The bellboy at Club Karey will also give you a ride over in the golf cart. There are scooters to rent at Club Kawama for 24 pesos and that was fun. NOTE: if you have a large head you might want to bring your own helmet, ie. bike helmet, as the largest helmet did not fit my husband's head comfortably. Beach As we had friends at Club Kawama and Club Los Delfines, we spent time at their hotel beaches and not Club Karey, but the beach seemed fine. There were jellyfish for a few days but that is nobody's fault. Room All the rooms are in old villas that were owned by foreigners before the revolution. Ours had a lovely common sitting area and porch that were open and breezy. It seemed that most had some kind of sitting area like this. We visited the town of Cardenas, to deliver art supplies to a children's rehabilitation centre (in 2007 and also this visit). Cardenas is where many of the Cubans who work in the tourist industry live, and Varadero is like a paradise in camparison to Cardenas. For this reason we were determined not to be fussy tourists. In hindsite, we should have complained about the room. We had 2 double beds which were old, but fairly comfortable. The air conditioner worked well, or we could open the sliding door which faced the ocean and let the breeze in. Our villa (#63) was very close to the ocean, which was nice. The pillows were flat and strange, the entire width of the bed. Bedding seemed older but clean, and the towels were very clean. Furniture was older, but we had a working bar frig which was stocked once with beer and soft drinks. You could buy beer or rum if you wanted to at the little shop. We had plenty of hot water at all times, and all bathroom fixtures worked well. We knew to bring our own toiletry items and so didn't use those provided. The downside: the room really wasn't very clean, the floors and especially along the walls. It smelled musty and moldy, the closet door was broken, and there was rotting wood along the base of the closet. We aired it out daily and that helped. But later in the week we saw some friends' room in another villa (the lobby building) and it was much nicer and larger. We also had tiny ants and twice we saw a COCKROACH. We decided that we were in a warm country where these insects are common....But the worst part was that my husband developed terrible red welts on his ankles that became very painful. His ankles swelled up terribly with what looked like long blood blisters...he couldn't even walk. We had to spend our last full day stuck in that dingy musty room wondering what had bitten him... and I was absolutely fine without one bite....so what had he done that was different from me???? We finally went to the doctor at the international clinic, and my husband was told he was having an extreme reaction to insect bites. He was given antibiotics and steroids which did work (the doctor was excellent and the price reasonable - 86 pesos). We were quite worried at this point, we were told he needed to rest and back we went to our room...at which point we couldn't wait to get out of there! It was a mistake to accept that standard of room, and if it ever happened to me again I would demand a new room. In conclusion...BEDBUGS! Today (the day after our return) I went on the internet and feel fairly confident that my husband was bitten by bedbugs. Fifty percent of people (like myself) have no reaction whatsoever and others like my husband have extreme reactions. Our friends at a much nicer resort also had the same problem (3 of the 4 had the red ankle welts) so I think this can happen to anyone at any hotel. But I will never travel anywhere again without learning how to protect myself from bedbugs because they really ruined the last 2 days of our trip, and it was unpleasant being stuck in our not-so-great room. Our luggage is sitting outside and I am hoping that any insects inside will freeze to death... Tips on what to pack....for yourself and as gifts -insect repellant -antihistamine (helpful if you have the bedbug reaction - pills and cream) -bandaids basic first aid stuff -advils or tylenol, bring extra to give away as these are expensive and hard to find - especially arthritis tylenol and children's tylenol, these can really make a difference in someone's quality of life -packages of computer paper and tempura paint were greatly appreciated at the children's centre and it was well worth the trip to Cardenas to see how many Cubans live -bring your own mug - red bubbas from Canadian Tire - and leave them behind -toothpaste and new toothbrushes to give away -there are so many talented musicians in Cuba and they have a hard time getting guitar strings....bring classical guitar strings and give them to guitar players and you will make them VERY happy!!!!!!! -soccer balls size 5 and regulation baseballs - also a big hit. -men asked my husband if they could have his shaving cream before he left -condoms to deliver to the clinic - not the international clinic that serves tourists, but the ones that serve Cubans...ask your local health unit for these. My friend was given a case of tylenol by her pharmacist and she delivered this to the Cuban clinic.

“You Get What You Pay For”
I booked two days before leaving and got a cheap price. This trip met my goals, I wanted sun, sand, and no bugs in my room. I got all three and had to keep reminding myself of that throughout my 5 days. For this reason I do feel like I had a good vacation. At first glance this place is not a resort. If you have a typical resort picture in your mind, scrap it. It's more like a block party. The resort is spread out down a street which is a little strange to me but it's good once you get used to it. It's like each building is a little apartment complex. The sidewalks are pretty beaten up, definitely not wheelchair / stroller friendly. Everything is located to the left of the main lobby building. They don't provide a map as it's really not that big. It seemed like there was maybe 50 people at the resort. It was nice that it was small and allowed for friendships to form if you wanted too. The workers are all great and I recommend you get a massage. The rooms are lacking a phone to the front desk, and a hair dryer. Not every room has a safe and you have to pay $3 a day to use it. My first room was bad, it was as close to the road as you could be and no privacy given two walls were all windows with flimsy drapes, my second room was good in block 13. There was a trade off, the water was cold but at least it was a great location and away from the road, and much more private. I noticed in both rooms the curtain rods are far from the wall and was easy to see in the room. I had tape with me and taped them down for privacy. To get a beach towel you have to give $10 CUCs to the front desk, they give you a ticket to get a towel. You can exchange your towel daily and when you hand it back in you get your ticket back and get your $10 back. I personally brought my own towel and just used that. When you arrive they provide you with one bottle of water. After that you're on your own. No drinks of any kind are stocked in the room ever. There is a store open 9-5 to buy bottles of water for $2 CUCs each. Or of course order all you can drink at the bars. I had a lot of cola this week! They don't have a place to rinse the sand off your feet that I could find either. Going into Varedaro was good, this hotel is one of the closest to the airport and took about 35 mins to get there. Along the beach their are two very friendly Cuban dogs in the evening. I never saw them during the day. No one pet them but they would walk beside you as you walked the shore. If you point out crab holes to them they will dig up the hole and find the crab if it is in there. If you change your money at the hotel, the hotel will charge you an extra tax. So they recommend you go into the city to the bank to do it. You could also do it at the airport before boarding the bus. The food was good, I was pleasantly surprised at how much salad they stocked for us. It was good! The a la carte restaurant is good too, I recommend it. Bring water shoes as the sand is a little coarse. All in all it was good, if you are looking for a cheap getaway and don't need any of the thrills and modern amenities of a resort then go for it.

      “Excellent trip ”
I read all the reviews prior to departing. Am I ever glad I did not take the advice from those who expect 5 star in a 3 star. This resort is close to the airport, right on the beach - our room was literally 50 ft from the shore line. The food was good, sometimes incredible. The staff was great, exchange your money at the airport as they seldom have cash at the front desk. Pedro is your run to guy, he will get whatever you need. There is fishing down the beach to the left, bring your own rod. The beach was awesome, bar right near by. Snack bar has Great food. Yes there are aspects that can be updated, but it's Cuba. Bring your own cups as the drink cups are small. Our room had our plug ins, so that was awesome. We brought our 4 teenagers and they had a blast. Only a 5 paso cab into downtown. We are going back, it was that great!!!

This place is not nearly so bad as other reviews depict. Old? yes. Run down? a bit. Food not good? It's Cuba. If you are willing to work with it a bit and add to the fun, the place grows on you. Staff? fantastic. Location? fantastic. Our hacienda was literally ON the beach next to Casa de Al's. #2703. The view from our windows extended both ways up the beach as far as you could see. Post and beam laquered ceiling. Hear the waves lapping. Maid service? fantastic. Only major complaint was long walk to restaurant for coffee etc. Hey it's a three star but a super bargain if you're not too stuffy. We had a ball !! Thank you to everyone for being so nice. On the old hotel strip with good bus and taxi service. Area prone to some oil fumes in the morning depending on wind. Few registered guests limited meal service and entertainment to buffet. Usual fare - meal, fish, rice, potatoes, omelettes, pasta hot and cold, and very good bread. Watch fishermen across the road or in the ocean in the morning, and you might have it for supper that night. Pleasant walk to main drag, restaurants are an easy walk, long stretch of nice beach. Rooms are in Casas of 8 rooms or so, with balconies or porches. Room was very clean, excellent service. Water was out in my cabin but repaired by noon. Guests from Canada, Eastern Europe, Argentina. TV has many languages.

      “Great holiday in Cuba ”
We had a great time at Club Karey. We expected simple and that is what we got. There were some minor inconveniences that could have been better but most of that is just the way everything operates in Cuba. Our safe didn't work. We paid first but should have checked first. It probably hasn't worked in a long time. We did get our money back after some negotiation and a panel of four but they agreed finally. I had to go back and forth to the room several times but they did agree that it didn't work! There was supposed to be wine with meals but that only happened a couple of times. Bar was mostly rum and pop. We were fine but something to think about when going. There was a small store and they had supplies you could buy and they were not expensive....as a matter of fact, they were cheaper than the airport for most including rum! The weather was very cool for early March but the beach was spectacular and right outside our room. Try to get a room on the second floor to avoid bugs (same as any south) Food at the buffet was simple but fine. We had tummy issues after eating the fresh salad. The pool area was very clean. Resort was not busy. Don't waste your time booking in at the restaurant. Poor choices on menu. Take your own pillows. AC in rooms was quiet. People that had booked a room with a complimentary bottle of rum didn't ever get the rum but it's only $5 in the store. Don't pay extra for a special room or service. It is all the same. Sometimes there was music by the pool. I guess in summary, sometimes things were there, sometimes they weren't but we had a great time and for a 3 star in Cuba, it was just fine.

“Simple and enjoyable ? off the beaten track.”
We booked a vacation to Club Karey on an impulse based on price, then we read some reviews and started to worry that we may have made a bad choice. We decided we would just make the best of it. On arrival we were shown to our room, it was simple, clean, the water pressure was good in the shower and the toilet worked well, we also had a beautiful view of the ocean. We quickly learned that if we wanted a hot shower we took it at an odd time, otherwise we got luke warm. We checked out the rest of the resort, everything was simple and clean. The front counter, little shop, the massage area, the pool, pool bar, main bar and buffet were all well staffed. The food at the buffet was nothing fancy but very typical Cuban resort food. Nothing had spice, sometimes things were not as hot as we would serve them at home, but then we weren?t at home we were in a 3rd world country. We enjoyed the fresh bread delivered every morning, the seafood was always good and the roast pork was great. At breakfast the omelettes were my favourite but there were lots of other choices. At every meal there were fresh fruits and vegetables, a selection of meat or fish, lots of fresh bread choices and dessert choices. The white wine was very pleasant; I found the red a little harsh. The snack bar food was a choice of grilled cheese, hot dogs or hamburgers with fries. If you like ketchup take your own as it is not always available and when it is it is not what we would call ketchup. The 2 bars didn?t make Mojitos but the rum punch, Cuba libres and cappuccinos were good. Freddie, Alex and Hector took good care of us. If you are a fan of nightly entertainment you wont find that here. Twice during our stay local musicians came and played but it was almost folk music style, with sing alongs encouraged. Club Karey is at least a 20 minute walk from the main thorough fare. If you like to walk it?s a nice walk, on the beach or on the road side. There are lots of open air markets and places to eat along the main strip. There are lots of interesting places off the main strip also. Like the bakery, the hardware store, and the local market. We had dinner out 3 times during our stay. My favourite was Casa de Al (Al Capones former place in Cuba). The food was excellent ? this was the most expensive place we visited. All in all it?s ranked as a 3 star resort and that?s exactly what you get.

Well this was our first time in Cuba, We have traveled to far east & Europe in the last 12 years . Yes! this is Cuba!, with the embargo for over 40 years! they have done well so far, most of us have been fortunate to have all or most of the standards here in the west. Lets do some math! for 550 $ air fare included [7 hours flying time round trip] and stay 5 days is about 50 $ a day with food! 3 basic meals a day! now that's abt 16 $ a pop. Yes some time I had to share my food with some flies! in tropical countries this is normal. Yes I agree Some basic hygiene has to be improved. but like some one wrote , Papaya were great, and the red Guava! of course! Some room had the stagnant water smell !! Had to cover/tape the drain hole on the floor in the bathroom. Yes the dinning table cloth was not changed when stained ! But we did not allow this to ruin our 5 days. Closed the room windows before leaving the room to avoid mosquito at night and left the only the fan on the air conditioner. 2806/2803 was agood bungalow with nice verandah facing the ocean & beach next to the Angolan president?s house. This place is not for hoighty toighty folks. In the real world 80% live normal/average life styles. So if one is to save and have some good time, this is not a bad deal. Now I have written to Colin/Stev Hunter-CEO Sunwing about some improvements to the service provide. Go to the Sunwing web site pick contact and write to ?After Travel FEED back and comments? Hope for the next traveler it would be better!! I personally will choose this place for the price and the service. Main thing is I did not get SICK on my stay. Oh don?t forget to take the Catamaran Cyao Blanco tour[swim with the Dolphins/snorkleing and lunch] and of course the Havana tour [La Bodeguita del medio / Hemingway/Revolution SQ] with Lunch. Not to Mention EL Rancho [54 st] & LA Barbacoa [62 st] dinners average 12 CUC in Varedero. Rent a moped for 20/25 cuc a day and go to Matanza ! Enjoy the lonely & only planet you live in!!!! ?

Overall our experience at Club Karey was fine. We decided not to go with a 4 or 5 star hotel as we decided to use the resort as a home base while we created our own things to do in Cuba. Overall I would say the hotel IS BARELY a 3 star hotel but none the less is fairly decent if you are traveling more so to experience things off the resort. (RECOMMEND you rent motorize scooters and cruise around Varadero and not rely on resort to provide enough activities to keep you entertained) Positive: - Beach was gorgeous and clean -Variety of things to do off the resort -Staff was friendly -Noticed some renovations (would like to see future improvements) -Weather was excellent *Location of the resort is excellent if you plan to travel off the resort Negative: -Lack of organized/advertised resort activity's -Some rooms smell stiff and moldy - **FOOD** (The food at the resort is not appealing, we went into town mostly to eat) -New furniture, sporting equipment and other assortments would make things better -No food or snacks located at any bars on resort -Beer is only served at two bars of the four bars on the resort (inconvenience in consistency)

      “Authentic Cuba ”
Just got back last night from 5 days at Club Karey March 21st to 26th and loved every minute of it. Exactly what I anticipated it would be after reading some of the reviews, and was looking forward to seeing it first hand. First off, yes it is older and lacks many amenities that 4 or 5 Star hotels offer, but makes up for it in location and staff. Alex the concierge is there to help make whatever you want to do, see, or require for your vacation. The room was basic (Rm 1804) but had a view to admire everyday you chose to look out over the large ceramic patio as it was mere steps to the green blue water and was cleaned daily very well. Yes there could be much improved updating to make the hotel to today's standard, but it would diminish the original Cuban atmosphere that was still there from when it was built years ago. The beach is perfect for both swimming and snorkeling for both young and old, and the pool was also only a short walk up some stairs from the beach. A pool bar that provided basic but cool drinks as well as a small Snack Bar that offered Burgers, Pizza, Fries or Sandwiches for the in between times of dining. The food in general is not for everyone, especially the picky eaters, it had some but not a large varied menu, but you would never go hungry at any of the dining times and offered local cuisine that was worth trying from fish to rabbit and local dishes that allowed you to try new tastes and yet was easy to digest. The staff are friendly and willing to offer any assistance you needed, and did so with a smile, nod or handshake. Would I go back there ever................absolutely, it is relaxing, rejuvenating, and its location to town is about 20 minutes at a brisk walk, or you can take the "Double Decker" bus all around Varadero that runs right in front of the hotel, hopping on and off all day for $5 bucks. We travelled with Sunwing as they offered it as one of their "Small but Friendly" Resort options, and the flight the location of the resort and staff were exactly what they advertised.

      “Club Karey in Feb/March ”
My husband children and myself visited Varadero, Cuba from Feb 26th to March 5 2014. We stayed in Casa 8, room 807. The room was clean, our maid was awesome and our bed linens clean when we arrived. We had no water pressure, but then none of Varadero has much for water pressure. We had no high expectations so we had nothing but good to think about our trip. The staff at Club Karey were awesome, Ivel and Pedro were so good to us and our children. The cooks and wait staff at the resort were always welcoming at the buffet. True the food did not tend to change too much and the mystery meat meatballs were getting old by the end of the week, however we never went hungry thirsty or over full. This is not Canada......remember that when you visit Cuba. This is a country that has not spent a lot on resorts for tourists and I highly doubt the government will in the near future. We were 50 feet from the beach, and fell asleep to the sound of the waves hitting the beach every night. The people complaining about Club Karey would complain about everything including the amazing weather . if you have lower expectations, your expectations will be met and surpassed. We will go back, the staff at the resort treated us like royalty!

“Started out hating, but ended up liking this place.”
My wife and I traveled here from the 7th - 14th of Feb. Check in was a breeze and my wife asked for a room close to the beach and we got one. First impression was that the resort is a little old and tired. But the whole resort is quite small and all of it is very easy to walk to. This is our 5th time in Cuba and 3rd in Varadero. We have stayed at a 3 1/2 star and a 4 star. This was a first here for us. I would have to say initially, we were pretty sure we would never go back and in fact regretted coming here. Our room was never cleaned properly. We were only allowed to book the ala carte for one night. Food was standard Cuban resort fare and the overall service and cleanliness of the buffet was very poor. Then we started to get comfortable and explore the resort. The bar tenders were awesome and always had a smile for you tip or no tip. By the end of the trip I didn't need to order a Cuba Libre was placed in front of me without a word. Coffee in the morning was great, with a spectacular view off the back deck of the lobby bar. The Canadian and German travelers we met were what really made this fun. The people were so nice and we ended up with several emails and promises to keep in touch. We are also beach people and were only a 2 minute walk to a spot we claimed for the whole week. The beach here is beyond description. It is beautiful. To swim , lounge or walk. This resort is worth it just for the beach. I did not spend 1 second at the pool, but it was pretty busy most days too.Go to the bank just down the road to exchange money, the front desk is usually out. All in all it was a great stay in an intimate setting. You feel more like a person here than just a guest. If you can tolerate all the quirks it has and keep an open mind, you will have a great time. If you focus on the negative, you will not have a good time. People were asking us early on if we would come back and we were saying an emphatic no. By the end of the week we were saying an equally emphatic yes. Oh and there are some kind of small biting insects outside at night. Bring bug spray or wear long pants. Wish I could see Russian guy that said that Russia was going to win the gold in Men's hockey. Canada it is!

      “I loved this resort ”
my son and I stayed at this resort for a week - Feb 11-18. When we arrived (been to Cuba twice before) it wasn't the prettiest hotel I have ever seen ...but it sure was the friendliest .... We met such great people - had such good times!! The stay wasn't bad at all - it's comparable to the other resorts I stayed at and would actually go back to this one again (I didn't go back to the other 2 and one was a 5 star)... there is a restaurant down the road called Kiki's and for 8 bucks you can have the greatest meal ever and a drink :)....or check out al capones almost next door....close to markets and shopping and if you bring a rod and reel there is some great fishing right in the pier ......... We had the best housekeeper - meals weren't that bad (little less variety maybe) but all in all it was a great stay......... yes money was short to exchange....there is a little bank not far (walking distance). If you rolled over in bed you ended up in the ocean (was that close to our door) Jelly fish were horrible (not to mention the little sardines that attacked on the beach) :) Entertainment is the weak point of this hotel...luckily we entertained ourselves and still managed to have the best vacation ..... Cuba isn't going to give you the glitz and glamour of Vegas .........it's Cuba.....but a more personal experience.......no walk to the beach .......and some of the greatest people I have met.....if you are going there for cell service, internet and top notch hotels........go to Vegas.....if your looking to sit back, relax and enjoy the simplicity of Cuban culture - well this is the vacation for you.........I would definitely stay again!!!!!!!!!!!

      “great time ”
i stayed at club karey for two weeks, jan 4-18th. and let me tell you, I read reviews after booking and there were some good and some horror stories. so my experience, some rooms aren't as nice... which goes for any hotel really. the room I ended up in, was amazing, 2807. request it, it's a good walk to the lobby, buffet or pool, but great room, if you care about your room.. the morning smell seems to be Cuba in the morning. the food was fairly basic most days, some days not warm, but I definitely didn't go hungry any day. nor did I have any stomach issues. options most days were rice, sweet potato, corn, beef, chicken, some days lamb, pork, one day they roasted a turkey over a fire. lots of fruit, oranges, grapefruit, watermelon, guava... the bars... my only complaint is that only the pool bar serves beer, and it closes at fairly random times... reception rarely had money, also didn't mention you need a passport at the bank. I found the ATM machine, extra fee, but no wasting time! entertainment. Pedro. the man! you'll find him with a flashy hat! great guy and always made sure I was enjoying myself. lots of games, the evening shows were simple but good. there was a live band that rocked some local tunes and the disco is what you make of it. usually weren't many people, but I met lots of awesome people and we always had a blast! the staff for the most part is very friendly, bartenders are awesome. the beach was awesome, the resort is spread out so always lots of quiet areas of beach. was clean most of the time, right after storms it wasn't, but I mean, if you're going to complain about that, go clean the beach! there is some small coral areas and lots of cool fish to look at if you snorkel.. I will definitely stay at this resort again when going to varadero. overall, I felt at home here. thank you so much to everyone that made my stay a pleasure!

      “fantastic ”
December 10-19, room 1305. My husband and I had a fantastic time at this hotel. The food was great - never boring, the service was without fault. Recreation at pool side was super, front desk staff - one could not ask for better service, "whiskey bar" - very entertaining and the staff were awesome, rooms may have been a little "dated", but were well kept and clean and the chamber ladies were wonderful. Gardeners were very friendly and helpful, maintenance staff always available to carry a bag, give a smile - wish you a happy day. we both had a super massage by "George". (thanks George). This resort may be small but it is huge in the kindness, generosity and genuine nature of the all the people who work there. We were made to feel as if we were part of their family. would we go back? in a heart beat! it is all about expectations. We were simply looking for a smaller place where we could get to know a little about Cuba - because of this great experience we will be returning to Cuba again for the 3rd time and we will definitely stay at this resort.

      “Awesome place ”
I spend 1 week there. The first day was hard because it is not what I use to. being from Canada. But the food was good. I just normal food. you some time get cuba food. But not expect the best because you are in different country. That is not what you are use to in your country. It is a old hotel that was buillt in 50's. It one the hotels left to see the beach. The people that work there was Awesome. If you need something they try to help. The room are not really big. old style room. But you are not going to get a new big room because you are in a different country. But our room was always clean. The lady that clean try to make us happy all the time. The bars where good. The guys where awesome. The nice thing about the hotel you get to know everybody. Everybody comes a big family. One important thing there 3 star is different then other country. It is a old hotel and old country. If you are expecting a 5 star then go to the 5 star but you don't have the fun like this hotel and be able to walk right to the beach. I would go back there again. Not the best if you have kids not munch to do. it was just me and my husband. WE LOVE IT! So all the bad reviews go to a 5 star then. Dont take candy for the kids. take clothes or school supplies. if you want to give money away give to the people that are working. not the ones on the street. expectly the kids. they are skipping school.. the parents aare teaching the kids to do it. everybody can get employ there. so remember give the stuff to the people cleaning. ie. housekeeper, doctor, gardeners. they all make the same money. there was not bed bugs. there is mosquitos and sand flies. you can get that any where.

“I don' t know what everyone was complaining about.”
I didn't know what to expect, and especially after reading the reviews I didn't expect much. I was defininetly pleasantly surprised by my experience, the room was clean, the food was plenitiful, the staff very friendly and helpful. Of course there is a language barrier, however with a little patience and plenty of hand gestures you get your point across and so do they. We had a clean room everyday with fresh towels, a view of the ocean and a safe to keep our valuables. We weren't there to watch t.v. so I couldn't care less what was on the channels and I know that Cuba isn't a rich country with a trade embargo and limited resources so I know there are limits to what they are capable of, however, they make do with what they have, I had a great time and I'm already planning my next trip. I don't know what most of all the other reviewers are complaining about, but if you're expecting the Hilton it's best you stay home or try reading a book. There are two bars, one of which is open 24 hours a day and the other by the beach open after breakfast and closed before dinner. Food is served three times a day and there is sometimes snack in between. I wasn't clear on the times for the snack so I never had any but it doesn't mean it wasn't there. There was a decent selection of food and if I have ANY complaint, it would be that the food was sometimes luke warm and not hot. There is a scooter rental place just down the street at the next hotel, a convenience store in the other direction, all within walking distance. It's a nice little stroll into town if you want to check out some of the markets and we did a one day Havana tour wich was absolutely amazing. All in all, it was great trip and would recommend it to anyone who isn't a snob and is a little cultured.

      “Never a dull moment! ”
Me and a friend of mine booked this trip last minute without reading reviews, and after booking we read some of what was written on here and were pretty worried. The worry was taken away pretty much the moment we got there. I will put it this way. If you're looking for a place where you will be waited on hand and foot and have fresh fruit fed to you while you're being fanned by a number of servants, you've come to the wrong place. This resort is not for someone who is used to, and can't live without the ammenities of a 4-5 star resort. If you can go without being pampered, like getting out, and seeing things off the resort than I would definetly recommend Club Karey. Our room was small but clean, and the staff was great. We had some great times doing a variety of tours, as well as just hanging out on the incredible beaches. We met some great people and saw the towns by renting a relatively inexpensive scooter for a few days. The food really was not that bad at the buffet, but when we didn't want to eat there, we simply drove into town and ate at a variety of restaurants, and had some great food there. Overall, I would say my title is a perfect description of our trip. We were never bored and I would definetly go back.

We stayed at Club Karey from Jan. 4th - Jan 11th, 2014, and had a wonderful time! The accommodations are a unique style of casas divided into oversized suites - including sitting room, modern bar fridge, and bathtub! The hotel is tranquil set away from the downtown crowd, but close enough for a quick Coco ride or good walk. Because the hotel villas are set away from downtown, the beaches right outside your villa, is also more private and beautiful! The staff here are very hospitable, and helpful...attempting to make your stay as enjoyable and carefree as possible!! The Chefs are incredible at the buffet restaurant - where they always have a specialty on the grill - ranging from shrimp, to roast pork and turkey! Even the pool snack-bar is an unusual surprise...where they serve excellent fries and pizzas! The nightly entertainment was very good!! We can't wait to come back to this place!

      “Great resort ”
I can not believe all the negative reviews of this resort. We stayed there from January 4th - January 11th, 2014. It is the most amazing four acre property located in between canal Paso Malo and the incredibly lovely Varadero beaches - which are only a matter of feet away from your room. The villas are divided into separate and private accommodations which are much bigger than the average hotel room, and the views are spectacular! The food was a variety of fish, chicken, seafood and lamb, served with vegetables, and salads, accompanied by fruits, deserts and lovely house wines. You realize that all this is extremely economically priced, much less than most beach resorts and the staff could not be more helpful or caring. We will definitely be going back to this resort, and recommend it highly!! Again, I can't believe the wining, petty complaints that almost deterred us from this vacation location - it was great!

“Amazing resort i will be going back don't listen to bad reviews ”
Awesome resort i will go back in a heartbeat rooms- some rooms are far from the pool and beach bar but asked to be moved and they will move you the closer you room is to the pool the cleaner it will be. All rooms have the same matresses yes they are some what uncomfortable but come on its cuba get used to it. some rooms have flat pillows and some rooms have fluffy big pillows so it all depends on your room. some rooms have two queen beds or a king bed. come rooms have phones and fridges all rooms have tv a few english clear channels, no internet all rooms have ac that works great. Not to many lights in the room, some toilets dont work to bad and be careful when you run on the water tap some of them have lots of pressure in the water. We had hot water everyday we showered so that was great. if you want clean sheets, blankets and towels throw them all on the floor in a pile and she will bring new ones. The rooms have safety boxes which is i think $3 a day but dont worry about anything being stolen the maids all have a secuirity guy watching them to make sure they dont steal. Careful where you leave things though like if you leave something on the bed the maid will thinks its a gift so just put it away. Beach- All rooms are like 50 feet from the beach so that is very nice. Sand is always so clean and white, water is very warm once your in waves can get big so be careful waves will push you in to shore but also push you sideways, water is a turquiouse colour very nice and clear, I did not see any fish in shore so nothing to worry about. Ocean stays the same depth as deep as you go but waves get bigger so may feel deeper, they rake the sand every 3 days or so. bar and snack bar- Bar serves you good drinks beach bar is opened tell 10pm and opens at i think 7am this is the only bar that serves beer, they sometimes can make you pina claudas when the machine is there. The lady that works at the bar is very nice she will try to get you anything you want. The bar in the lobby is opened 24 hours they serve almost anything except beer if you want a margarita you have to ask for a dacurri he will make you different kind of drinks and he makes some very strong. There also may be a bar in the disco open tell 2 am but im not sure if there is because we didnt go in the disco. The snack bar serves hot dogs, hamburgers, grilled cheese, ham and cheese sandwiches, fries and pizza the lady that works there is very nice and always smiling hot dogs are the best. If you order a pizza she will make you a whole pizza not just one slice. Snack bar always has enough food they open at 10:30am tell 5pm. Food- There are 2 restaurants 1 buffet and 1 la carte. The la carte only offers supper, and is only opened on thursday and friday night. The food at the la carte is very good and it is not very busy, you get to pick 5 different dishes there are only 2 menus though so you will have to share with other tables. The buffet is opened for breakfast from 7:30am-9:30am, opened for lunch from 12:30pm-3:30pm, opened for supper from 6:30pm-9:30pm. The buffet can get very busy at supper time right when it opens so i suggest going later. In the buffet breakfast does not have much selection they have fruit, omlettes, fresh meat, cheese, bread, eggs and pancakes sometimes. Lunch they will cook different things everyday such as pork, beef, fish, chicken, rice, veggies etc. Supper they cook different things everyday also such as fish, lobster, beef, pork, chicken, turkey, rice, vegetables, bread, squash, potatoes, casserole, etc. The food is a little bland but not bad it got better as our stay went on. I thought the food was gonna be really bad, but it was actually really good just needed some more spices. All meals there were waiters that would help you find a seat and serve you drinks such as coffee, pop, wine, etc. All meals included desert, there ice cream is the best out of any desert. We were there for new years eve, so on new years eve you needed reservations to eat at the buffet because they made it fancy and cooked 3 big pigs and 2 huge fish. Entertainment and Fitness- During the day they had bingo, ping pong, water volleyball, sometimes dance lessons, etc. At night starting around 9:30pm they would have dancers that danced to music it was like a dance show, sometimes they danced in the water which was very cool to see. Starting at 11:00 pm when the dancing was over they would have a disco party in the disco building or outside tell 2am, also during the day they have music on at the pool side. For fitness they have a tennis court basketball court fitness room and you can get a full body massage for $20. Staff- All the staff that work there are very nice and always trying to make your stay better. Alexander is one of the bell mans and security, he is very kind and likes to talk when ever he sees you he's always asking how your doing, and giving you a handshake. Armondo is a very funny guy he likes teasing you and making jokes great guy to meet. Renee is a talkative person he likes to talk to you about cuba, and how it is like to live there if you talk with then you will know lots about cuba. Service- Sometimes they are unorganized at the resort but finally they will get organized it takes a while sometimes. Most of them understand English very well but sometimes its hard to understand what they are saying. Do not exchange your money at the resort as they always say they have no money, go to the bank which is a 10 minute walk and they will exchange it for you. Towels are $10 and then when you hand the towels back they will give you your $10 back Overall this resort is great and i will be going back to it next time i go to Varadero cuba if you have any questions just send me a message on trip advisor here thanks jared.

      “Love the Club Karey ”
This was our second time at the Club Karey in Varadero Cuba. We stayed 2 weeks each time. It is a quiet, small resort that is perfect for what we want in a holiday. There is the beautiful beach, a great pool, and fantastic staff working there. There are a few in particular that went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. They were Pedro, Chicho, Millie and Tanya. There is a buffet with limited food but totally palatable. The lunch counter at the pool had excellent pizza, hamburgers, and Grilled ham and cheese sandwiches. Pedro is the pool manager and went beyond the call of duty for our family. There are no ?extras? at this hotel but for the price it is absolutely perfect. If you have young children it doesn?t have too much to offer but we are a family with 3 adults and a teen. Varadero is a quick walk or a $5 taxi. My only complaint of this hotel would be the beds. They need mattress covers as they are old and don?t smell the best. The final word here is that if you are very kind to the staff, they will double it back to you.

This was my 5th time in Cuba and I must say it was the best. I will be going back to Club Karey next year as our family was treated like rock stars. We stayed for 16 days and all the staff knew us. We have been to Breezes, Barcelo Marina Palace and Barcelo Solymar. They all offer something a little different. They all have faults and they all have good points. For our family, Club Karey is what we were looking for. It is a smaller, quieter hotel with more a more personal touch. It was close to some excellent restaurants: Casa de Al, (Al Capone), Kiki?s Club and La Sangria. We ate at all three and they were all within walking distance. (The food and price were good too). You can get a taxi for 5 CUC to go into the market or take the double decker bus for 5 cuc and ride all day (9-9). The staff was probably the biggest reason we will be back. Pedro and Toni at the pool were VERY helpful, fun and entertaining. The bar and restaurant staff were over worked but super friendly. There were 4 night watchmen at all times keeping us safe. The general manager of the hotel allowed us to have our friends come over to the resort for the afternoon. We had a late checkout granted to us because our plane was leaving at midnight and check out time was noon. Then when the plane was delayed, the hotel let us stay in our same room unconditionally. They were all so helpful and staff came to wave goodbye to us when we left. The food was always the same everyday but..... ?that?s Cuba?. There were no beach towels for the first two days because their washer was broken...... ?that?s Cuba?. They got their blender fixed by the fourth day so they could make pina coladas.... ?that?s Cuba?. There were always clean towels in the room and toilet paper stocked along with hot showers and a bed to sleep in. The staff were FANTASTIC. What more do you need? ?that?s CUBA!?
