        “Avoid this ”
This would have to be the worst hotel we stayed at in Cuba. Location - a long way out of town, so you need transport to find somewhere nicer to eat. The atmosphere is very much as I imagine an Eastern European resort. The rooms were large but poorly maintained and didn't feel clean. Seemed like most of the rest of Cuba - stuck in a time warp. At least sleep was not to bad apart from the drumming noise from water dripping from the air conditioner of the room above. Breakfast was terrible and the breakfast area felt like an army mess. I suspect we struck it just prior to departure of a couple of coach loads of tourists. One minute it was packed then everyone left and it was deserted. This was not an enjoyable place to stay.

        “Hotel ??? ”
Los canayes is one of those hotels you like to avoid on your holiday. Breakfast is terrible. The rooms are outdated and expensive. The only good thing in the hotel is the pool and the environment. Lot of girls and boys to pick up. Very far from the city center so you need a car or taxi to visit the wonderful town of Santa Clara. The environment is nice shame about the hotel. Better cooking and service would do a lot. For the rest is is now very expensive .

“Ugly rooms, impossible to shower, awful food”
This hotel was the worst on our whole trip. The rooms very incredibly ugly, and the lighting in them was horribly unromantic. The water pressure was so low that I found it impossible to wash shampoo out of my hair. The food in the buffet restaurant looked so bad that we went to the pool bar for a sandwich instead. That sandwich was okay for Cuban standards, but I was sick to my stomach right after. The breakfast was awful, and we were very happy to check out again after just one day. It seems that many turists use the hotel as a one night stop on their way to e.g. Trinidad. That showed - the breakfast room was very crowded around 7 in the morning, probably because everyone just wanted to get out of there asap :-)

“As grim as it gets ”
Our room was filthy. It smelt musty and there was grime and old dirt all over the bathroom. The decompsing body of a large lizard was being carried around by ants and there were stains all over our bed sheets. Dinner was a bland buffet. I don't expect haute cuisine in Cuba, but neither do I expect to find dead flies in the yoghurt bowl! We spent most of the day sitting by the pool, people watching. The locals seemed to be having a whale of a time, but when they left, there was litter everywhere. I tried putting off going back to our dingy room as much as possible - I couldn't face the prospect of spending a night in that filthy bed. Quite inevitably, the next morning I woke up with bed bug bites all over my arms.

“Hotel Los Caneyes - Believe the 'hype' ”
Before my trip I was a sceptical about the horrid reviews for Hotel Los Caneyes (HLC): "Typical westerners paking a full over nothing" I thought. Boy was I wrong! The rooms in HLC were simple but quite liveable (personally, I don't mind the odd lizard popping in for a chat) and the whole 'native theme' motif was a little tacky but I liked it. However, this is where the positives end. The clientele was mainly Cuban, and the staff treated the non-Cubans with contempt. They were inconsiderate, openly rude and generally unfriendly. When I asked a clerk to call a taxi to take me to Santa Clara city, what I got was a clapped-out private car with no seatbelt (i.e. NOT a taxi) operated by the clerk's mate who overcharged me. Upon arrival, the driver invited over his friend who intern accosted me for other taxi services and cigars. The pool was a disturbing milky-colour and I did not appreciate the staff using a leaf-vac by my table whilst I was chatting. Additionally, the in-room safe did not work and the food was not good (by Cuban standards). Now, when travelling I don't expect luxury or Australian standards. What I do expect is staff that treat me with the respect owed to any paying customer. I did not get that from HLC, so I must recommend two things: One, avoid this place like the plague. Two, believe the reviews on this site. Better still, avoid Santa Clara altogether as unless you're a Che Guevara acolyte, you'll likely find nothing of interest there.

“Los Caneyes - We Could'nt Wait To Leave! ”
We did a tour of Cuba for a fortnight in June and can easily say that this was by far and away the worst hotel during our stay. We arrived early afternoon and the swimming pool area was bouncing and over full. The pool water was murky and you couldnt see the bottom. At six o'clock the place emptied and it turned out that all the locals pay a day fee to use the pool, leaving debris and litter behind them that wasnt cleaned up. The rooms were in chalets that were ok, but with gaps under the doors allowing the wildlife to come in. We had to catch and throw a lizard out before rolling towels and plugging the gaps. Flies and mosquitoes every where which was our first problem with bugs in Cuba. We think that everywhere else sprays the grounds. We decided early on to get drunk get into bed and get up and out early the next day. As previous reviews have mentioned the breakfast was as bad as it gets in Cuba and the staff have a poor regard for tourists that wasnt repeated anywhere else that we went. Overall if you can then avoid even if it means travelling for another couple of hours.

“I would wish this hotel on my worst enemy ”
We spent 15 days driving around Cuba and stopped in the hotel for 1 night. Thank god it was only 1 night. The whole set up is a bit naff as mentioned in another review but this would be fine and probably a bit amusing if it weren't for the horrendous state the place is in. Our "cabin" stank of a mixture of mould and drains. The smell in the bathroom from the drains was almost unbearable. The bedding all smelt horrendous. As we were sorting ourselves out, we noticed what looked like a dead lizard in the middle of the room - I say, "what looked like" because it was moving. On closer inspection, it turned out to be moving because it was crawling with things eating it. This was in the middle of the room - not east to miss and had clearly been there for some time begging the question of when the room was cleaned, if ever. It certainly didn't smell clean. In a desperate bid to escape the room (we had already spent the day in Santa Clara) we headed out to the pool area. There is a games area with a pool table and air hockey table. The air hockey table was so dirty that the puck wouldn't move across it so we soon gave up on that. The whole area around the game area and bar area was filthy. There was food all over the floor and tables and the floor all around the bar (which is right next to the pool) was sticky like a grotty night club - not nice if you had no shoes on from the pool I imagine! The buffet for both dinner and breakfast was easily the worst food we ate in Cuba. The "entertainment" was laughable. The disco (yes, we were that desperate not to go back to the room!) was so bad you have to laugh. We were expecting some horrendous cheese and some awful dancing to entertain us. No such luck, the DJ played a mixture of really heavy gangster rap. Not 1 person in the bar enjoyed the music, most people left straight away. We only stayed for a bit longer because the thought of the filthy room was not tempting us back. I should also point out that the pathways get dangerously slippery when wet. It rained that night from about 9pm. My partner slipped and fell at the entrance to the reception as we were walking around. The wonderful staff stood, pointed and laughed - hardly what I call good customer service.

“Horrible place to have a holiday! ”
This is a government owned sub-standard hotel. So many flies in the room, the restaurant, the pool area... There is no travel services, no tourist brochures, not taxi services. As we did not pre-arrange day trips to the area, we basically confined into the hotel. The hotel only have one restaurant, after the 2nd day, there was nothing we wanted to eat. The only taxi that can take us into town was a very old , hot, dirty Lada. There is no meters and you worry about if it would give up any moment. The Front Desk told me the exchange rate of Canadian to Convertible Peso was 86.50, but when I got in my hand, it was only 82.5. Every evening, there is some show by the pool. These are not much of entertaining other than a whole batch of pretty girls with very little on. When we paid for some raffle tickets for 2 dollars, the change out of 10 pesos was 7. Besides poor services, you need to be careful about the time. Once, the Front Desk told us to wait for our taxi 7 minutes, we waited 45 minutes. As a result, we decided to go to the airport hours before the flying time.

“Bedbugs, Leaking Plumbing, and a Midnight Disco Assault ”
You can skip this one, folks. Looks nice upon arrival, but rooms are musty, plumbing was leaking, and bedbugs were biting everyone in our study tour group. When we complained to the manager, she said the bugs were NORMAL and would disappear in a few days. Ouch! But here's the best part: the "entertainment center" is a DISCO which attracts hundreds of local teenagers who dance, drink, and rev their motorcycles from MIDNIGHT to 3AM thereby insuring the hotel's paying guests a miserable night. Avoid this place at all costs.

This is a bungalow style accommodation which we were told was the best "hotel" in Santa Clara. The room was clean and actually quite large however it was a bit dated and charmless. Our breakfast and dinner was included in the price however we quickly decided to forgo eating here. The food was either too dry or too bland or too salty or just plain (I'm sorry but I have to say it) gross! To top EVERYTHING off - outside our room there were frogs and lizards which fine - we expected them since it's a bungalow style accommodation HOWEVER the tarantula crawling on the roof of our room topped it all off. I dont want to down this place too much as it probably really is the best in Santa Clara however just a forewarning - the food is worth skipping and you're most likely going to see the wild in your room.

the accommodation here is in cabins set it a "park - like" surround. Each cabin is divided into 6 units in a circular configuration, so your room is wedge shaped. I can cope with a wedge shaped room, but the bed was hard and rough, it smelt really bad, the air con unit was mega noisy, the toilte had no seat and the handle was broken off, the shower was a dribble. The pool was OK, but was filed to capacity by the locals so noisy and not tourist friendly. The buffet was OK by Cuban standards. When you add that other than the Che Guevara monument, its not wiorth visiting Santa Clara, its a real miss for me.

When we booked this we were told not to expect much. It has an interesting layout with huts dotted out around the grounds which with some tlc could be nice. It has a large pool with dining room and bar. Our hut was basic but we expected that and had no problems with it for one night. The dinner buffet was actually better than expected but the breakfast was woeful as they did not replace anything when the coach parties had blitz it. The staff declined to replace anything and we had to pick at what was left even though there was still 30mins before the end of breakfast service. The pool area had deafening music playing in the afternoon and that got louder during the night but luckily the staff had told us about it and we asked for a move and got it.

As mentioned by other, it was very difficult to find. We only spent one night there and we are thankfull for that. Nothing to do at the hotel, so if you plan on staying there for more than just one night, make sure you have a rental car. The dinner is quite pricy compared to similar places. The night we stayed there they performed a ancing/singing show which was rather tasteless even by Cuban standards.

We were apprehensive about the hotel having read some of the comments, but unable to change it as it was part of our tour itinerary. And we were glad we didn?t. The place has character: wood carvings on the doors: a little walk through the ?jungle? and a lovely, well cared for pool area. We only had one night but would have liked more time to chill by the pool and not stayed at Hotel Ancon Beach. The staff were lovely ? couldn?t do enough. A small Cuban band played while we ate in the evening. Buffet was ok (no worse; no better than anywhere else we'd been in Cuba) ? lots of choice and breakfast was fine too.

Rural setting bungalows in trees with a pleasant swimming pool, with good loungers. Bungalows look primative from outside but are confortable and clean. Fully tiled showe room. Hot water and adequate flow from shower. A/C looked old but worked fine. Old fashioned TV with largish screen. No tea making, no hairdrier and no safe. Good food. Chilean wine at 3 pesos per glass or 8 pesos per bottle. Good breakfast. No WiFi. Internet 6 peso/30 mins. Impressive carvings on reception door and elsewhere.

I was worried about this hotel after reading some of the reviews, but it is really nicely laid out, thatched bungalows or small blocks of rooms, all thatched. Grounds are really well cared for, pity they don't pay a bit more attention to the rooms - simple things needed fixing like curtains hanging off, and not replacing toilet rolls. The man on duty on reception when we were there was surley and not at all helpful. Nice pool and bar area. One of the best buffet breakfasts we had in 3 weeks, even smoked salmon. Recommend Paladar Hostal Florida Centre, for dinner, set in a lovely garden, one of the best meals we had - shredded beef.

How ever there is now an other hotel in Santa Clara that I visted in decmber 2013 that is better located than los Caneyes. ( See my revieuw las americas) If you wish for a hotel and swimming pool and a different environment then Los Caneyes might be your choice. If not then this hotel isn't for you. “Blaring Boom-Box Music AND Bedbugs ”
Hotel Los Caneyes, Santa Clara, Cuba- Looked nice when we got there; bungalow rooms with AC, windows (no screens), nice pool. BIG problems were the blaring noise that lasted until past 2 a.m. Manager said it was "Entertainment Night" and there was nothing he could do to turn the down the sound. Everyone in our tour woke up with bed bug bites. We fumigated our suitcases when we got home, stripped out of our clothes and washed everything again, as a precaution. The hotel is rather far from the town center and there was no taxi service, so you are stuck there with little chance of going in to explore the area or to try some restaurants to get away from the tiresome monotony of state-run hotel fare. A true Third World experience. Tourism still not ready for the on-slaught to come when Cuba really opens up.

We had an okay stay here, we liked the grounds of the hotel, nice art among the trees. The rooms are okay, nothing special but adequate. Very noisy air con, but hot rooms so had to leave on. I would not recommend eating here, we paid for buffet lunch, but food choice poor, even by Cuban standards, nothing much for my young son or myself to choose, though my husband enjoyed it! Waste of money. They served chips for breakfast rather than lunch which was very odd. Go to Santa Clara to eat. We had half a day in SC which was quite enough to see everything. Quite a nice town for a wander around, but not to linger.

        “Disrupted Sleep ”
We spent our first week at a resort in Varadero and then joined up with a coach tour for the second week of our vacation. This gave us the opportunity to try out six different hotels and see alot of the surrounding countryside. This hotel was #5 in our travels. The resort itself is small but provides for a nice walk around the premises. They have carvings carved into the trees for interest sake. The pool area is ok but nothing special. The buffet provided enough to pick and chose from for dinner but was limiting for breakfast. They ran out of coffee for a long time in the morning, which proved to be a problem with our large group and time constraints. Everyone in our group was pretty excited to see the little huts for accommodation. However, the excitement was soon quashed when individuals found various creatures such as lizards and spiders the size of your hand in their rooms. I guess we were lucky and never encountered anything in our room. However, unlike others in our group, our hut had an unoccupied room upstairs. This posed a problem when at 1:30 a.m. there was a power surge and the TV turned on by itself! We turned it off after calming our hearts down but the TV upstairs remained on at full blast. The next morning we discovered that several others had encountered the TV turning on as well. We telephoned the front desk and explained the problem in both English and Spanish. Assurances were given by the night clerk that the matter would be taken care of but never was. We phoned again 3.5 hours later after not being able to sleep and were once again given assurances. When nothing was done, my husband managed to find a gardener at 5 a.m. to explain our problem to. They went to the front office. When they knocked on the door, the night clerk had clearly been sleeping, was fully aware of the problem and just handed a key to the gardener to take care of the problem. With only a couple of hours of sleep under our belts, we were not very well rested to say the least! There truly has to be better places to stay in Santa Clara than this place?

When you read from the travel plan we were provided with by our agent, that at this place we will " live like they did years ago on a plantage" You may be forgiven to think , Big House , lots of Plam trees etc etc, well you dont get much of that here. It seams to be a bit confused as to what this is. Its not a Hotel, its not a resort , is is abit of both and abit of a disapointment. The rooms are "huts" spread around a park like garden, fine enough. Our air con was as noisy as a 747 taking off and only worked as ON or OFF. Couldnt sleep with it on and couldnt sleep with it off! The pool was tiny for the ammount of people using it. Locals have the right to use it (and so they should) but as it was their holidays too , the pool area was massivley overcrowded. The food was a letdown. We paid 4x 12cuc for the buffet , but you dont get much different from some of the other places we stayed in. The State run hotels seem to just provide food with not alot of care or attention to detail .Not very warm , Salt pots are empty , no ketchup , tasteless over cooked veg , always Chicken - pork- beef - rice, the same bread the same tea the same fried eggs , nothing to put on you toast, only butter.. not much imagination. Yes Im moaning , this was the biggest flop of 5 places we stayed in.

Located on the outskirts of Santa Clara, the hotel was very hard to find on a rainy, dark evening. From the Circunvalación, there are signposts only on one street side, and the hotel lies hidden behind trees quite far from the Circunvalación. The reception was chilling cold, as was the dinning room due to the air conditioning. We were given a hut that smelled like the windows hadn`t been open for a long time, and the bedsheets also smelled musty. The bathroom smelled of the sewers. Cleanliness was also not ideal. The garden seemed OK, but some huts are being renewed, so there were fences all over, and noisy workers started their jobs early in the morning. Dinner was bountiful, but I found it very expensive, at 13CUC per person. Breakfast was OK. There was an unusual high amount of waiters, who just loitered around, doing nothing. Very peculiar. The price was what you would have expected for the quality you got: 72 USD. We were glad to have to stay only one night.

        “Beautiful surroundings! ”
The animals on the premises were fun to look at...goats, horses, turkeys, roosters, lizards, ducks...Clean rooms and the buffet dinners were pretty good...The pool area was nice and relaxing. The food and drink prices were quite reasonable. There is a fashion show every night with a chance to buy the clothes and accessories! There were also some jewelry and souvenirs at the front entrance of the hotel on the weekend.

“This is a review of the restaurant only (we came for lunch) ”
We stopped here, in Santa Clara on our tour of the area and had a very nice lunch. It seems that this is a nice hotel, but I we did not get to it's facilities. The food was goof (a buffet lunch), service was fast and good.

“Very Charming.....even beyond Cuban standards ”
We visited this hotel on tour of 11 nights in Cuba, across 8 cites. During our time, we stayed in 5 different hotels across Cuba, so we were able to see quite a wide range in Cuban hotel standards. I have to say this was one of the better ones. The set up was very nice, with more of a resort type feel. Rooms were small, and ours did have a few bugs, but seriously this place is located in a jungle like atmosphere, there are bound to be some bugs or perhaps a lizard. Nothing life threatening and nothing that even came close to ruining our visit. The pool/bar area were very nice as well as the outdoor hibachi. Dining area was buffet style and like any buffet it wasn?t fabulous, but it was edible and the wait staff was amazing. Bottom line, this is Cuba, you?re not going to find the Ritz Carlton?s here. We were here for the experience and adventure, not to be pampered. So for us, Hotel Los Caneyes was very nice.

        “Hotel "Los Caneyes" ”
This is definitely a hotel that can be recommended - to Cuban standards, it is excellent. Clean overall, very good service, excellent and abundant self-service breakfast, vast and enjoyable swimming pool. Obviously, you will not be too demanding upon details: low water pressure, no telephone line to call outside from rooms, internet service (at the reception, with a special card that won't work anywhere else) slow and an only PC... But overall, believe me, you won't find anything else of that standard around Santa Clara! Oh, I forgot: it is not very close to town center (1/2 hr walk), but around 1 mile to the "Che" monument.

“A Comfortable and Charming Hotel ”
This was yet again another hotel where the pool was invavded daily by local Cuban's, their loud music and dog's running wild. However, once you get used to that the hotel accomodation itself and amenities were very good. The rooms were spacious and pleasantly furnished in their own bungalow style huts and on the porch were Cuban wooden rocking chairs to enjoy the shade during the day or to relax in of an evening. The family thoroughly enjoyed the stay here and the town of Santa Clara is a must see to experience the history of the Cuban revolution.

        “Nice setting-Nice hotel ”
Stayed here two nights and found the room clean, quiet and the beds very comfortable. The buffet breakfast was good although it was the same for both days and there were several tour groups staying at the same time so it became quite hectic during breakfast. The hotel grounds are well maintained and there are sculptures throughout the grounds. The staff was friendly and helpful. I would recommend this hotel.

        “Peaceful and Quiet”
My room was very clean and everything was in good working order. There was more than adequate lighting, which was a treat. I had a good night's sleep and my room was very quiet. I found it quite comfortable. This was nearly the last stop on our trip, and I was able to buy some souveniers at reasonable prices from the vendors in the courtyard of the hotel. The meals in the restaurant were adequate but not memorable. The only negative was that there were not cards available for the internet, a common problem in Cuba.

“good hotel for stop over ”
I liked this hotel. Mainly because I had spent two nights camping beforehand, and hadn't come across a hotel that didn't have creepy crawlies or dubious surroundings since the camping! Plus it had an all you can eat Western style buffet, which after nearly two weeks of Cuban vegetarian food, was one of the best things I'd ever seen! The hotel grounds weren't great, but it's a dry area and there was building work in progress. I actually enjoyed the quirkly statues and faces in the trees that were scattered around the place. My room was one of 4/5 around a central courtyard. The room was a good size, the air con worked and it was very clean and comfortable. And it was the only room I stayed in during two weeks touring Cuba, that had a locking door and a chain. My stay to break the journey between Santiago and Vinales, so was here just one night. It was in a bit of an out of the way location, which was OK for me as I was with a tour, but not sure how convenient it would have been if I'd been travelling alone. But Santa Clara seems a bit of a stop over town, apart from the Guevara associations, so if you're planning your trip carefully, this shouldn't be a problem.

        “Lovely gardens and pool”
we stayed in Santa Clara as we were there on a placement on our days off and were able to visit Los Caneyes for the pool and bar..3 convertible pesos we had access with a 3 peso credit at the bar for a daiquiri, bar food was lovely too. staff were very nice. The night disco was a young crowd and quite loud but the younger ones in our group loved it. Getting in to Santa Clara will cost you about 3 pesos by cab,, great spot to stay if u wish to visit |Santa Clara to learn about the history of the revolution. They let us check out the rooms and restaurant,, very nice and clean would definitely stay on another visit to Santa Clara

A nice small operation with accommodation in challets surrounded by beautiful lush tropical gardens. Exceptional concierge/ porter service - a nice warm welcome. The challet allocated to us was very clean with nice sparkling clean shower room. Very pleasing indeed. The bedroom was modest but again also very clean. The restaurant and the bar are adequate for a 3 star operation. The grounds are really serene and a joy to explore.

The staff were all really friendly and went out of their way to help! The rooms were nice and clean. The restaurant was great and there was good entertainment in the evenings. One thing I must mention is the lovely walk in shower that I had in my room! I will definatley be coming back on my next trip to Cuba!

        “a little oasis ”
having driven for 3 hours from trinidad we spent 1 1/2 hours driving around the little one way streets of Santa Clara unable to find and park near the city centre hotel (its pedestrianised and impossible to park close to ) or locate any casa particulares ( due to lack of road signs and detailed city road map ) , all this happening whilst being tailed by a local on a push bike ( impossible to drive very fast on the streets) who when he caught up with us at road junctions or when stuck behind a horse and cart would bang on the windows , it got to the point where it was going to get dark in a couple of hours and we were bracing ourselves for an uncomfortable night in the car . That was until the time out guide and los caneyes came to our rescue and what a lovely feeling it was arriving there on spec and being told there was a room available. having seen it and to be told there was no rooms available would have been too much too bear. it was like a little oasis , a mini beach style resort right in the centre of cuba on the outskirts of santa clara. it took us 30 mins to locate it once we were out of the city ( its across the road from Che memorial , no real signs with directions by the way) staff were very pleasant and helpful , rooms modern and spotless with walk-in shower , great restaurant , secure parking , entertainment in the evenings , superb pool and tasty food at the snack bar . the rooms are housed inside old style native indian thatched round houses with some two storey apartments in lovely grounds . A few foreign tourists like ourselves supplemented the mostly cuban guests which was a great mix . the sort of place you could stay at for 2-3 days and just chill out an relax in peace . unfortunately for us we only had one night before having to set off back for havana. its a convenient location to base yourself if you want to do day trips to trinidad, cienfuegos etc. all i can say is that i cant recommend it highly enough

        Not bad
Two kilometers from Santa Clara, the buildings of the hotel imitate Cuban houses before Christopher Columbus' arrival. Among coconut trees, ferns, groves, the hotel's architecture imitates the dwellings of pre-Columbian Cuba
