      Havana Airport

José Martí International Airport (IATA: HAV, ICAO: MUHA), sometimes known by its former name Rancho-Boyeros Airport, is located 15 km (9 mi) southwest of Havana, Cuba, and is a hub for Cubana de Aviación, Aerogaviota, and Aero Caribbean, and former Latin American hub for Aeroflot Soviet Airlines.[2] It is Cuba's main international and domestic gateway, and serves several million passengers each year. The airport lies in the municipality of Boyeros and connects Havana with the rest of the Caribbean, North, Central and South America, Europe, and one destination in Africa. It is named in memory of patriot and poet José Martí. In the 1960s the airport was bombed by B-26 aircraft from Brigade 2506, a CIA-sponsored group of Cuban exiles attempting to liberate Cuba from Fidel Castro. Cubans are not allowed to own aircraft or use the airport for either private or commercial flight. Only government-owned aircraft are allowed to use the facilities. There are currently four passenger terminals in use at the airport, plus a freight terminal.[3] Terminal 1 is used primarily for domestic flights. Terminal 2 opened in 1988, primarily for charter flights to the United States. Ten years later on April 27, 1998, the International Terminal 3 was opened by Canada's then-Prime Minister, Jean Chrétien, and former Cuban president, Fidel Castro. International Terminal 3 offers many modern facilities and jetways that the former international Terminal 1 did not provide. Terminal 5 is operated by Aerocaribbean. Today, Copa Airlines is the foreign airline with most flights to the airport, operating 34 flights a week (roughly 5 daily flights) from Panama City, Panama, and Bogota, Colombia. The airport is operated by Empresa Cubana de Aeropuertos y Servicios Aeronáuticos (ECASA).

A/c not working in the whole building, phone was not working & they did not bother to check it, toilet malfunctioning, not enough food on weekends when locals come, dirty and stinky pillows and disgusting cockroaches in the room. Elevator not working, don't go with a senior there. It took then 36 hours to change me to 1st floor.Make me sick.

        “Disappointing ”
I booked this hotel fully understanding that 3 star in some countries is not equal to 3 star in North America. This hotel does not rate 3 star anywhere. We had problems with food quality, service, no electricity (air, lights) for 30 hours in our room before we were moved to another room that had no air. Our son and daughter-in-law were moved twice in one night only to have issues with power and plumbing. We lost 2 full days of our holidays waiting around the hotel to either get maintenance or new rooms. We chose this hotel (one of only two all-inclusives in Havana so that we could enjoy the city. Sunwing moved us to another resort in Varadero for last two days. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. One can see that this was a good hotel at one time but has been run down without maintenance.

        “Absolutley disgusting ”
This hotel should be closed down. It's awful, leaking blocked toilets, cold food at every serving and for this we had a compulsary charge of 16CUC per day and were then locked out of our room on Christmas Eve and were forced to pay a further 60CUC as it was Christmas! We also discovered that the lift was not working, and had not been for 3 years, but it's on it's site and it's brochure. After reaching our room I immediatley went to reception and asked for a change as it was very noisy and over the bar.I was told NO I asked if we could be moved tomorrow and explained that my lungs don't work so well and it was draining getting up to the third floor again No. We visited the buffet to find everything was cold, powdered potato, all veg and meat. We existed on eggs cheese and bread, which was sometimes fresh but always had sour butter. The coffee machine did not work so there were urns of 'Acorn' coffee nothing like the real mcoy Our room had no hot water and no plug in the sink. The evening buffet was as bad as yesterday and we returned to our room to be told we had to pay a further 60cuc as it was |Christmas!!Reception had blocked our card what an underhanded way of of extorting money from guests who are already paying far more than the service is worth. The Italian Continental Restaurant was closed, this time no-one knew how long, Childrens Club did not exist. On our way back to our room Christmas Eve there was the smell of drug cigarettes being smoked by Angloans. On a meeting with Roberto we made all these points but nothing was done, so that night we had been forced to pay a 60 and guess what? we got no sleep whatsoever because of the noise yelling shouting, laughing despite phoning reception throughout the night. We were however made aware that other people complained. So why didn't they stop serving or make them be quiet? I told the senior manager and Roberto that their habits of no hot trolleys for food and attempted re-heating was not safe due to food poisoning, Campylobacter in particular We were assured we were same on return to England we had food poisoning diagnosed by our GP We went a different route to the restaurant and discovered that all light bulbs had been removed and the fire hose was in it's case but unravelled. There were many pits about a metre deep around the property just imagine falling in one of these at night. We showed our pictures to Roberto and he didn't seem bothered. There was an abundance of food what was lacking was staffs input. I recon that the food was prepared early in the day and just left breading ground for food poison. Teach the chefs how to do a job to the customers satisfaction, if necessary cook to order. SO ONLY VISIT THIS HOTEL IF YOUR STUPID We tried to get the CUBAN DIRECT REP out he didn't want to know. I contacted Cuba Direct Seymour who didn't want to know giving me an email address from which there has been no reply.

“WHY is Sunwing using this resort????? ”
We were happy with a few things in this hotel. There is a very large pool, a wonderful massage therapist who would do anything to help you. It is beside a picturesque marina with large yahts and sailboats. However this is my 6th time to Cuba and this is the worst by far resort I have ever stayed in! First of all Sunwing actually charged us double the posted rates of this hotel when we were booking a Cuban family in to stay for a week. I would have been much better off to pay at the counter, but I didn't and will be speaking with Sunwing about this. We had some good simple food like boiled plantain, rice and beans nothing fancy and when they served beef tongue on two occasions, they just told everyone it was a beef dish. We ate rabbit 4 times and beef heart 2 times. There was always papaya, pinapple at the buffets along with some cucumbers, grated beets, grated cabbage, tomatoes etc... Sometimes there was ice cream at the buffet and sometimes it was guava preserves alone. The food did not vary much nor was there any spice whatsoever to the fried bread pieces or anything. So if you like garlic, bring your own to sprinkle on your food. The breakfast coffee is part dried peas and part coffee and tastes funny. There is real coffee at the bar if they haven't ran out which they did many times. This was especially true in the mornings before the coffee rations for the day have been distributed. What I found really difficult was the place was dirty. This was especially true on the many glass surfaces in the hotel. Beit the windows of the tables. Things were very worn out. The pool table does not even look like it should be being used it is so brown and there are many many broken tiles on the floor around this play area with one pool table one ping pong table and one tv. The morale of the staff is very low and I think it is because they are so poorly paid. It does not inspire someone to work hard when they are getting 17-20$ a month in wages! Actually I thought Sunwing had their customers back until this trip. Now I know that this is not true. This place is not up to par for someone going for a little bit of spoiling. The beach is 1 hour away and Havana is interesting but expensive surprisingly. So disappointed that Sunwing books trips here. IT seems strange it is all they can muster up for a large city like Havana. Very disappointing trip and there was always something broken in the rooms. A/C ,doors on the closets were unmoveable and it smelled very moldy.

“All I can say is STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE !!!! ”
From the moment we checked in to the moment we checked out I was never so discusted and disapointed. Put it this way I am a Flight Attendant and I travel all over the world and I have never encountered anything so terrible in my life......( It was worse then when I lived in a mud hut in Africa for three weeks) Food is GARBAGE and what was not eaten they recycled it and give it back to you the next day... Flies all over the food..... Discusting !!!! We tried to brings some friends in for the day and we were turned away and told to leave our own resort...( Because we were gay and so were our guests, they did not want them in the resort with us) From that day on we were treated even worse then before, they only tolerated us "Gays" because they had to. This place is just NASTY all around from the room to everything else. The only good thing for this hotel would be a wrecking ball !!!!!

        “Disgusting Hotel!! Would not recommend!”
We just returned from our first trip to Cuba on Friday, April 27. We were booked to stay at Club Acuario for a week but left after our first night. We didn't arrive until midnight, we were pretty tired and hungry after travelling. Our first impressions of the hotel were not good. The receptionist was not very friendly, there was water all over the lobby floor, and it was very dirty and dated. When we entered our room we could not believe what we saw. Wires hanging out of the ceiling, stains all over the chairs, everything old looking and falling apart. There were holes in the ceiling especially the bathroom, the sink leaked, the toilet ran all night and would not flush properly. The lock was missing off the door, lamps had no bulbs, it was just gross. I could not believe this is where we were staying for a week. We went down to the 24 hr snack bar only to find no food there and no one cooking. The bartender was extremely unfriendly and basically ignored us. There were very questionable looking people around so we just went back up to our room. We went to bed hoping that things would look better in the morning but they did not!! As soon as we met with our Sunwing rep we requested to move to another hotel, which we did. While we were there waiting to meet with Sunwing(who was great) we attempted to eat the buffet but could hardly get more than a few bites of the disgusting food in our mouths!! We sat at the pool bar and continued to deal with more very unfriendly staff who never seemed to want to give us the time of day to order a drink. The staff at the reception desk where not much better, not friendly, helpful, etc. We could not wait to leave!!! Save your money and go somewhere else!!! Also, you think you are getting a beach, but all you get are large rocks making it impossible to swim there!

“Not a good vacation at all”
The weather was good but the hotel was something else. The pillows sucked I asked for a few more and they did not come. Our bathroom in our room had a puddle everyday. The hotel washrooms either did not flush and there was no toilet paper to be found. But I must say the worst when my daughter was accused of damaging a electric golf cart. The security staff were not professional at all. All they did was accuse my daughter who was not involved and the head of security was positive my daughter was involved. Screaming at her in Spanish. They ruined my vacation by keeping us at the hotel for a day, they did not even apologize to myself or my daughter. The next day a boat was untied from its docking port and again they right away accused my daughter it was like they had our room number on the hit list. I do not recommend this hotel to anyone. My experience has left me with a very bad taste in my mouth and I will never travel to Cuba again. Penny Mississauga

        “Complete Hole! ”
I have never felt the need to write a review about a hotel before, but this place leaves me stunned! I have never stayed anywhere so horrible! We were dumped here by Cubanacan while on an overnight Havana trip. We were sold the trip with the promise of the "National or equivalent" This is nowhere near even the 3 star it claims to be. Rooms were filthy and musty with mold on the walls, no room safes, gardens unkept, bar toilets disgusting, food was only just passable - what was left of it. There were no plates, cups or glasses in the buffet. A constant water leak in the utility cupboard outside the door. When my partner decided to have a look, he opened an unlocked cupboard door to find no floor and a drop to the ground floor from the third we were on. Don't let your kids run around here! The only good thing about this place was the view!

“I wont go back. But plusses and minuses”
The room itself was OK. Everything worked except the TV button for channel down was missing off TV. Annoying when you want to change back. The food. The food was a 2 on a scale of 1 to 10. If it had been hot, it would have got a 4. No toaster. No tags labeling anything. There was some sort of fruit that I never tried all week. It looked like a raw human liver. Breakfast omelletes were interesting. Choice of green beans, carrots, corn. What the heck is that? Cheese and ham omellete for an entire week is pretty boring. Coffee in the dinning room is undrinkable. Evening dinners were better as long as you like fish. That was the best item on the menu. The snack bar. No choice. Only 1 item per day. IE Hamburger, grilled sandwich. Cooked at 11 AM then reheated for you. Yum. Bar service. You have to go to pool bar for beer. After a 3 hour flight and 2 hour bus ride, you want a beer. You cant have one at the lobby bar. Off to the pool bar I go and get a beer and a Gin and Tonic for my wife. You cant get the G+T at the pool bar, you have to go to the lobby bar. Grrrr. Lobby bar only had ingredients for mojitos about 3 days out of 7. The coffee at the pool bar is great BTW. Take it with you to breakfast. One of the good items of this hotel, not advertised is the free safe. Cash exchange at front lobby at better rate than downtown, but on our last day there a large group came in and they had no cash for exchange. Staff were great. Friendly and helpfull. The problems with the resort are not their fault. Tell Peter the bellboy hi for me. He is truly helpfull. The buildings. This hotel probably had room for over 1000 guests in about 8 buildings. Only 2 buildings are still open. The rest have been abandoned. There is NO elevator to get to your room. Windows and doors all need work. The tile floor by the pool table is a hazard with parts of the floor missing. Pool is beautiful, well maintained. The attractive part of this hotel, why we went in first place, was access to Havana. Daily bus ride in at 10AM and back at 5PM is included in your stay. That length of time is perfect to see all of Havana

        “Acuario Resort ”
I would not recommend this hotel if you have kids. On the other hand, it you want a place to visit the old La Havana, this is it. The food is average and the hotel would benefit with having more staff hired during very busy time like XMas and New Year. I found the site to be quite dirty at time and even dangerous if you want to walk around the site a bit (lot of holes). We had a huge suite on the top floor with great views (no complaints there) but it felt like half the resort was left unattended of cared for. Staff is great and they do work hard but I have to say that it would take a bit more for me to recommend this hotel to someone else or to go back.

“If the hotel was only half as good as its staff, it would be a great spot! ”
Let me start off by stating a few things. First, our group of four needed an all inclusive in Havana and the Acuario is the only one to be found. We were scoping out a hotel to bring down a group of 24 plus next April. Secondly, most Canadians go to this resort between November and March. We were there in August, the height of the Cuban Vacation Season. 90% of the guests appeared to be local Cubans enjoying their vacation. The Acuario sits at the Hemingway Marina in the west end of Havana. The layout and design is very good. The resort is made up of several three floor walk-ups. Each room's balcony overlooks one of the canals at the Hemingway Marina. The views are wonderful. We sat checking out the many ocean going yachts and power boats we envy in our eyes! Let's face it, no one goes to Cuba for the food! The food at the Acuario was not very good at all. Having said that, remember we were there during Cuban Vacation and perhaps the food was geared more toward the majority than the minority. Over a two day period it appeared an inspection team arrived and wow did things improve, but as soon as they left, POW back to less than average. The 24 hour Snack Bar only serves food from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, but the drinks flow 24 hours a day. I only saw one over worked grounds keeper who never made it down toward our block of rooms. There was a dead bird laying in a garden and it was there for our entire seven days. The common halls on the ground floor of our block of rooms and stairs never saw a broom or were washed down, except when it rained. Our room was pretty good. The Acuario is renovating and ours was newish. We had a suite which gave us two bedrooms. Our air-conditioners broken down a couple of times, staff were quick to try to get them up and going. The pool is massive. It is divided into smaller pieces designed for children and relaxing. They even have tiled lounges built into one area that was for adults, we sort of! The pool deck had not seen a good cleaning in a long time. It was covered in a brownish mould. The pool itself was very clean. The music was played at maximum volume all day long and into the evening. At times it was very difficult to carry on a conversation. Thoughts of the main speaker ending up in one of the canals were common within our group. Requests to turn down the music were mostly ignored. The Acuario does provide a shuttle bus into Old Havana. A cab ride cost us between 20 to 25 CUC. Touring Old Havana is a must both during the day and at night. You will see two different cities. I'll finish off with commenting on the staff. They did their best with what they had. Many tried to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. We noticed some staff started at 9:00 am and remained at their post until 10:00 pm.

“You get what you pay for!!!! Don't pay more than $50 all in for 2. ”
You get what you pay for. A 2 star at best and thats pushing it. Anything more than CAD 50 per night/room all inclusive would be a rip off. FOOD. Very basic, limited, salty, they try and present it well, a pass barely. ROOMS the first 2 we had were in the furthest building on the property since we arrived late at night we let it be 'till the next morning. Issues~ running toilets, load AC, TV not working, doors scraping the floor, locks not working, balcony sliders had NO locks, old dirty tiles and grout, awful mattress low and lumpy, sheets were very white and clean. It rained for a few hours and water was leaking into our 2nd floor room. GROUNDS, I think it's been a long long time since the side walk & pathways have been repaired, shrubs trimed, grounds swept, walls painted, garbage collected etc etc.POOL/SNACK BAR, pool was clean and we enjoyed it. Lounge chairs were filthy dirty perhaps never cleaned. We asked for pool towels and were told to use our room towels, so, the same towels you use to protect yourself from the filthy chairs are the ones you use to towel off your clean body after a pressureless shower.???? Never saw any food being served at the snack bar. Next day we asked to change rooms , perhaps we could be in the same building as the front desk which is beside the pool. We were told it's full, yet, there were only about 30 people max at the pool all day. We were given new rooms in the afternoon, different building, more of the same no locks on the balcony doors thats all- 4 rooms with no lock. Anyone can push a buddy up to the second floor and steal from you. (no room safes) there is a small fridge though that worked. I agree with all the PIC's i've seen thus adding mine would not change things, The staff, some were friendly and yet some could not give you the time of day..... would I go back ????? only if the price is right...

“If you can afford it, spend a little more and stay somewhere else. ”
I believe in writing honest and forth right reviews, so here goes.... My husband and I planned to stay a week at this hotel, we stayed 3 nights and moved to a different location in Havana. Our plan was NOT to use thie hotel as a R&R lounging experience, rather a home base from which to explore the city of Havana. I did not have high expectations, but even my moderate expectations were not met. Location: about 20km from the old city but there is a free shuttle 2x per day, or about 20 CUC for a taxi one way. The view of the marina is very nice, there is a restaurant near the resort (not sure of the quality because we did not eat there) as well as a small grocery/liquor store where you can buy snacks, etc. Overall not a bad location. The Resort: much of the resort is not usable and deserted because it is in such a severe state disrepair. The rooms are dingy and very shabby, with tired furniture and sagging beds. Patio doors do not lock, air conditioner did not work well in our room. The first room they attempted to give us was so dark, smelled and had gouges in the walls. Our second room had intact walls, a door that locked, but smelled very damp/musty as the air conditioner did not work properly. The rooms ARE clean. The grounds are kept well, the stairs and walkways are crumbling in many areas. The pool is nice, and appears to be clean. There are no inroom safes, but you can get a safety deposit box at the main desk. Internet service is average, with only 1 working computer. You cannot call out from the phone in the room, only to the front desk. Pedro had to assist me by using his code on the phone in the main area of the resort. Food and Bar: the buffet is limited for selections, if you do not get there early the best will be gone. Even by Cuban buffet standards, this one is poor. You can get salads and omelets and pasta as staples. The bar is limited, but the standards are available. Staff: we did not find the staff to be rude, but they were certainly not friendly, except for the bellman Pedro. He is great, the high light of the hotel. Overall, our 3 days were not horrible at the hotel, and if you cannot afford any more, then it would certainly do. We do not expect perfection and are not what I would consider high maintenance, but we were much happier when we upgraded to a 4 star in the Miramar district. You do get what you pay for and if you do not pay very much (as in our case here) you will not get very much. Any questions about this review, please feel free to email me.

As soon as I arrived there was people following because they did not want my driver to bring my bags up. What a bad start. So I decided to go closer to old Havana rather than confrontational. The next day the music was blasting toilet leaking and AC clanging. Who needs seasons passes to the opera when you have it in stereo. The maintenance man never showed up after 3 calls so I took sleeping aids to sleep. The food was 2 out of 10. The line up at the only place for hot food was 45 minutes long cause instead of giving a person a ration he gave the whole chicken. After people told him in Spanish he pretended that the people in the line didn't exist. Will never stay there again.

We love the resort, with all it's Facilities(Pool, 2 Restaurant, 3 Bars, Spa, Message & free bus service to Old Havana, Beach & Super Market. We found that all the people work at the resort were very nice & helpful @ Hotel Club Acuario, Marina, Hemingway in Havana, Cuba. Cuba has lot of history, nice historical bldgs, Stechus, endless Ocean & Art. It's a Communist Country. They are famous for Cigar, Rum, & Coffee. We took one day city tour. Everything was satisfactory but one day Hotel bus to city broke down so we shared a taxi with 2 other guests @ the hotel. We wanted to exchange Canadian Dollars for Cuba Currency but Hotel didn't have it. We waited for them 2 days, & then we went to Bank in Old Havana. Hotel is little run down & they have mosqetos & I saw one cockroach in the middle of the night in the bathroom. Rest was ok. The food was good @ the resort no complaints. http://www.vacancestmr.com/en/hotels-sud/HAVACU/

We stayed only 1 night before we started our tour in Cuba and 1 night when we came back. Rooms we had were clean and big enough. Beds were OK, and both of our rooms are quiet with beautiful views. Meals were not special, but you can eat. Buildings were generally not in good condition (this is problem all over in Cuba)and elevator didn't work. But people who work at the hotel are friendly. Situation is far from the noisy city but it is peaceful and safe area. Beach is also far away but there is a quite big pool.

I know this review is abit behind but I stayed in April 2012. With my boyfriend and 6 other people. honestly we had a blast. The rooms are not the greatest and 2 couples had to change rooms they got put in bigger rooms but a little ruin down block... we were in the main building had no problems except ants the first 2 days sprayed off around the floor n such they never returned. The food was bland but a great little pizza place a block from the resort, pizza nova, we freqeunted it often lol. The staff was amazing and we always left them little things and maybe a peso if we had the same one a few days. they always made sure we had plenty of supplies,. the bartenders knew what we wanted after a few days , and the pool bar is open all night. We went out to yellow submarine in havana one night it was amazing had a live band that we now talk to often :) There is a supermarket just outside the complex and it is secured 2 times this area ! but marina security and then hotel sercurity... Although this is not beach front & we had to travel 2 hrs to the beach so we only got to experience it once :( we found out 2 days before we left that 10 minutes down the main road off the marina near a hotel is a beach ! you have to pay entry but i mean better than traveling 2 hrs then paying for your beach chairs and unbrellas ! if you go there a few hours with just ur towel then no biggie ! it was our first time to Cuba and we are returning in April this time to Varadero

I have read some reviews here that are very unacceptable, people If you are expecting getting a 5 star service... then pay for one week $1500 or more at any Paradisus, Melia Hotels etc... which is the price for a 5 star hotel, if you pay $500 for all included Hotel "What are you expecting? This is a great place to be for an affordable price in the beautiful Cuban Island!!!

Just got back last week for 7 days stay. STAFF: The staff at the front desk were friendly and responsive - they speak English, French, and Spanish. They do their best to fulfill all requests. HOTEL: The resort is far away from Havana city. A taxi ride to Havana runs $15 one-way. During my stay, there were no taxis available, the security had to call one every time. The hotel is old, and some parts of the hotel are not well lighted during night time. There is a elevator, which works at random, 50% of the time. Overall, it's manageable. ENTERTAINMENT: Unfortunately, I never got to see the shows the hotel offered, since I was in Havana City every night. There is a disco on site, which has AC, well lighted, and good music. It is hit or miss at times. If you prefer hardcore parties, then you have to visit Havana City, many clubs, and many beautiful people. I cannot prefer one club, since every day, the crowd moves to different clubs to party. Ask your taxi driver, where the party is tonight. FOOD: I tired the food once at the resort, only for snacks. It is Cuban and the food is cold - so you can guess. If you want possibly the best food in Cuba, go to Havana city, visit Chinatown, and there is a restaurant located at the end with peace signs on the window. Do not go for restaurants located at the front, they are pricey and food is not that good, the ladies will try to arrange you, ignore them. ROOMS: The rooms are good size, have refrigerators, hot water, good size washrooms, and clean. However, the AC in rooms are old fashioned, not separate units, build into the room, like apartment buildings. They are not that efficient. The safes are located at the main desk, not in rooms - which is good. HAVANA: Havana is a beautiful city, it is the biggest city in Cuba and is a must see. There is a lot of prostitution in the city, most females you meet or encounter for friendship, talks, or interview, will offer you personal favours in the end. It is better that you let them know that you are married and just want to be good friends and nothing more so they do not waste their time. Everyone in Havana works on commission system, do not ever think you are getting free advice or help.

I stayed here in April in a Junior Suite 1. Location far from city centre but shuttle bus service was good. 2. No hot water 3. 220 volts only 4. Buffet was ok but ran out of food often 5. Pool bar terrible - most of the time only one bar tender 6. Staff could smile a bit more 7. Light in bathroom broken, complained three times, never fixed 8. Junior Suite was very large and nice 9. Room was very clean 10. Common areas of the hotel and pool very clean 11. Great pool 12. Overall, not bad for the price. Little improvements would make a big difference.

“NOT MUCH THAT I CAN ADD TO REVIEWS ALREADY LISTED ”
as other reviewers have stated do not go with high expectations and you will not be disapointed. We only paid $500 each for a week all inclusive from Halifax so do not feel that we could compain at the price !! The room was dated but pretty clean and the water was generally warm to hot . air condition was noisy and did dump water on the floor on one day and then sort of gave up life after that. the lifts only work in the buildings close to reception but only three floors so not too many stairs although very badly lit at night so you might want a flashlight. many of the blocks are not deserted and in disrepair which spoils the look for the resort and have to be careful when walking due to holes in the ground and missing drain covers etc. Food was not good, first day you will think it is ok but every meal, lunch and dinner is the same. rice, salad, fruit, bread and some dubious looking meat. We avoided the meat totally and lived on the other items. the al la carte restaurant was meant to be open but never saw anyone use it. The entertainment in the main restaurant was local bands which were entertaining and only at the weekend did they crank up the usual poolside games, ( thank goodness it was only then) which seemed to be for the benefit of the cuban day guests and venezulans. We stayed there as a base to visit Havana and used the shuttle bus almost every day to go into the City which was a good service and this meant that we were not at the hotel much in the day. people who did not take this option were disapointed but it was never a hotel to use for an AI holiday. in summing up, if you want a cheap base to visit Havana, stay there , if you want a resort, pay more and stay elsewhere.

Just got back from 7 days at the Aquario. The hotel itself has certainly seen better days but the location is stunning with fantastic views of the ocean and marina from the balconies. The food offered at the hotel restaurant and snack bar was bordering on inedible but the pizza at the La Cova Restaurant (a five minute walk) was superb! There's also a handy little grocery at the entrance to the complex which was well-stocked with liquid libations and snacks. Staff at the front desk were indifferent at best but the security guards and housekeeping staff were attentative and friendly. It was easy to book day trips and overnight tours with the Cubanacan rep who is in the front reception area most morning. Rooms were clean, air-conditioning worked and although we had to let the water run for a few minutes to flush out the rusty color, I heard from fellow travelers that this is common in many Cuban hotels. This is not a good place for high maintenance types but if you're looking for a clean, safe base from which to explore Cuba, I'd recommend it.

Me and my girlfriend stayed at club Acuario for 5 days (march 6 to 11) . We had ocean front room with 2 queen size bed. The room was very clean. I took an extra face and body towel also toilet paper and soap, but we didn't need it. we had our towels changes everyday and rooms cleaned everyday. I do recommend to take a towel and small soap and toilet papers when you are traveling to Cuba.. Last time I visited Cuba I stayed in a 4 star resort and sometimes we needed some of these things. If you don't use it, leave it there, they would appreciate it.NO safe in the room only front desk and free of charge. the food was ok but I wasn't there to pig out. Don't miss the omelet station. They don't have black pepper however so take your own. Avoid the elevator. I got stuck in there.. it's a good exercise to go up and down the stairs anyways. Pool was clean. They have shuttles to old havana and santa maria beaches. Santa Maria beach is beautiful you can get a chair for 2 CUC. Try the grilled fish it was 13CUC but was worth it. Take advantages of the hair salon and Massage.. for 10 CUC get half an hour massage. taxi from old havana is 20cuc if you miss the shuttle. Take the Vinales tour. you'll love it. things to take with you: Shampoo, tooth brush and paste, bug repellent after bite. sun screen, moist wipes. One thing I really liked there was that this place didn't attract the annoying, loud, rude, rookie tourist that you see in Varadero..so It was worth it. I loves it and I'd stay there again.

        “Don't take ANY valuables!!!!! ”
Wasn't expecting the Ritz, but really! Arrived on Feb. 20 to rooms that weren't ready. We had to leave our luggage behind the front desk, which we didn't mind, we wanted to start with the bar and pool anyway. Upon arriving to our room, we found that our laptop was gone. When we went to the front desk we just got a lot of blank looks, one guy took us to the 'lost and found' room to show us a suitcase that looked like it was sitting in there since the 50's. The sunwing agent told us that she would look into it and never heard anymore. The following day my husband left his prescription sunglasses on the lounge with his towel to use the mens room, when he returned his glasses were gone. We got the same blank stares when inquiring about them too. On a better note, we met some other great Canadians there and had a great time reguardless of our missing items. The food was edible, the pool nice. Be aware, if travelling here, that there are no room safes, so be prepared to carry your passport and wallet with you everywhere you go. I wouldn't trust the safes behind the desk that they claim to offer, there weren't any available during our stay. Other then the theft, the place was exactly as I expected it would be for the price we payed.

        “Was what I expected ”
I purchased a fairly cheap package with HolaSun, 7 nights (only 6 days due to arrival/departure times). I had gotten a reasonably good idea of what to expect from reading a number of reviews. We arrived to the hotel approx 9:30 at night, and were greeted by Marilene(sp), and Jorge. They were very pleasant and friendly. As we were the only arrivals from our flight, check-in was very quick. Jorge, helped us carry our luggage up the long stairs to the 4th floor (elevators not working) The Buffet was closed due to time of night, but there was an Italian restaurant open, which Jorge so kindly drove us to on his way home from his shift, it was not far, but we were unfamiliar with the area, we could have also have opted for a ham and cheese sanwich at the snackbar, but decided on LaCova Restaurant. We ordered pizza, which would have been good if we hadn't ordered bacon on it, as it was very fatty and very raw. We had tried it again on last day with other toppings, and it was pretty good. After our hungar was satisfied we purchased a few cervezas and headed back to our room, and relaxed on our balcony which overlooked one of the keys of the marina, very enjoyable. We awoke before sunrise to sit on balcony and watched as the sun rose, we had a beautiful view. Our room was of average size, with two double beds, with small pillows (I used a folded blanket, and gave the misses my flat pillow) room was a bit tired and dated, as expected, but clean and served us fine. Washroom was also average in size, plenty of hot water, though had to run for a time to warm up (no problem). Our washroom had no hairdryer, she brought her own dryer and staightener from home, which fit into the outlet, it is 240V, but accepts our N.American plugs, check your specs on your appliance to see if it is 240V compliant, if so it should work, I recharged my camera batteries, and elect. razor in the washroom outlet with no priblems. Buffet - Just Past The Pool Breakfast - was ok, we only had the eggs, fruit, bread, and fresh orange juice. We never had lunch there becase we weren't around at that time of day, so can't comment. Supper - was ok, if you got there at opening, so you can have meat from the carvery station. We also had Dinner at the restaurant, just up the street on the opposite side (can't recall name) which Pedro, the other bellhop arranged for us...was very good. Snack Bar was a hit and a miss, you could get ham and cheese sandwich most times, but had to guess when to get a hamberguesa or hot dog, I hadn't seen any f.fries...oh well, no biggie. Pedro, shuttled us to an other key of the marina, so we could arrange for a rental car for the following day, where we passed a decent sized grocery store, gift shop, and cigar shop, all within walking distance, and easy to get to on foot, but we did not know that at the time. Later Pedro found us an english speaking taxi driver named Gaston, and we booked him for 5 hours at 20cuc per hour, and went for our first tour of Havana. I would recommend this if it's your first time to this city, as was for us. He was great, and if you have any questions, or something in particular you want to do or place to go, just ask. Gaston very proudly knew alot about his city. On second day, as planned we took our rented car to Vinales for a 2 night stay. We left our valuables in the safe deposit box, and unnecessary luggage in room with no problems. ......Just a side note: if you are leaving hotel anytime to visit a casa, be sure to take your passport, you will need it to register with casa. After returnig from Vinales, we spent our last two days going too and from hotel to Havana Viejo. The buses are twice a day and free, and take about 40min., and taxis were 20cuc each way, and about 20min. It rained on those last two days so didn't do much, a bit of site seeing, and a bit of bar hopping (just a little bit). We hung around the pool bar when at our home base as well as the lobby bar, both were very enjoyable, and service was really good. We quite liked our stay here, the staff are great, with a special mention to Jorge and Pedro who went above and beyond to make our stay a very pleasant experience. Also because we wanted to see Vinales in the Pinar del Rio Province, by rental car, it was ideally located for us, as I didnt want to drive in an unfamiliar city of this size, with regulations and signage I am not accustom to. (I found it difficult enough getting out of this area to find the autopista...hehe). All in all I would be happy to stay at this resort again and use it as a home base.

I traveled early January 2011 and I used the hotel as a home base to explore Havana moreso then for lounging. There was bus service that departed 2X a day to and from the Old City. I found the wait staff and the security staff very, very pleasant. This is not a true 3 star resort, but keeping in mind you are in Cuba, this was more then adequate for my trip - particularly based on the price I paid via Hola Sun. Transfers to and from the airport were flawless. Food is just OK and same with the beverages. I had a lot of fun at the resort when the large group from Paraguay (Montevideo) was around = they were a lot of fun and well mannered. The small group from Valenzuela the one night were rather rough and looking to start trouble. Speaking with the staff, groups from there were at one time banned and I think I can understand why. Not a shot at anyone or any country, as I know there are wildcards from everywhere.

I liked the hotel's setup. It's quite small, so not overcrowded. The pool's great but the music's noisy. I asked him to turn it down & he switched off the speaker on my side, which was a relief. The cleaning standard is very poor. The public loos stunk. My room faced the front. The floor was filthy, the aircon leaked, & none of the plugs worked. I wouldn't trust the patio doors in a gale! The chefs were proud of their food. But I couldn't get it over to them that Bain Maries aren't ovens. You have to turn them on at least 2 hours before using them. You can't let food cool & then heat up again, especially rice. They're going to kill someone eventually! I stuck to the salads & barbecued meat. Overall, it was a hotel that suited for a few days. There's a nearby shop & a free bus to Havana. Would I go back there? Amazingly, yes I would. You get what you want if you ask for it with a smile.

        “good and bad ”
For myself and wife this resort had everything we wanted and expected (we were there March 2014). However: there are good points and bad points. If you are going with kids, if you don't like bland food, if you don't mind the occasional shortage of water, if you can live without the occasional electrical outage, and doors falling of the closet, no elevator (3 floors to climb), a disco that plays continually from 10 in the morning to 2:30 at night, then this is the resort for you. However If you like a free coach ride into Old Habana (10am, 11:30am and 3:00pm all returning at 5:30pm Sunday - Sunday, you want to hit the nightclubs in new Havana for the evening, a cab ride will cost about 20 pesos + tip (the hotel is 22kms from town and cabs are modern), if you like to walk down a marina and look at million dollar boats, if you like to visit with the most fantastic of people, if you like old cars, old buildings that haven't had work done on them for 50+ years, if you like museums, market places by the ocean, excellent beer and mojitos then this definitely the place to go. In a few years, health permitting, we'll go back to this resort. Old Habana was an experience never to be forgotten. When back in Cannuck land it's quick to realize just how lucky we are. WARNING, when money changed into (CUC's convertible pesos) spend them or change back into $cdn. No bank will exchange CUC's. If a late flight home then beware not to guarantee the ceda (money exchange) will be open. Take a few Pesos for the duty free, if that's your thing, but get the rest changed before you leave. We have 120 pesos damit. We did not see anyone using the old pesos even in the markets.

“Much more than we expected! ”
My sister and I stayed at the Hotel Club Acuario the first week of May 2012. We were pleasantly surprised with our room. We had none of the concerns that were previously described. Room 3451 has a fully functioning AC (a bit noisy, but no worries) clear water with plenty of hot except for one day and the toilet and patio doors worked great. We have stayed at many hotels in Cuba and abroad and never had our sheets changed three times in one week! As previously written, Pedro is a dream and goes out of his way to ensure your visit is the best possible. The pool, including the pool music was the best we have every experienced. The live band, Septito Cristal are some of the best musicians we have ever heard. Hailing from Bauta, the band showcases the oldest musician in Cuba, 95 year old Adalberto (Nino de Bauta) This group performed one evening and the combined talent was nothing less than incredible. Yes, the buffet may not have all the offerings of other resorts, but the omelets were very good and there was always fresh fruit and vegetables, beans and rice and usually a chicken dish. Frankly, I never travel to Cuba for the food! Although they did not automatically serve wine in the buffet, all you had to do was ask. The drinks were fine and if you did not like what was offered, you can always purchase a bottle of Havana Club "Special" for $7.50 and make your own. Many Cuban guests were at the hotel when we were there and this made us feel like we were truly in Cuba for the first time! We made three trips on the shuttle to Havana Veijo and found it very convenient. After 15 trips to Cuba (20 for my sister), I finally feel like I have had a glimpse of the real Cuba. I will never do an exclusive beach holiday again. Thanks, Hotel Club Acuario - we will be back!!!

I was so afraid but I was so wrong! We had a room on the 3rd floor. Super nice view, clean room. The place is old and needs so upkeeping but nothing unclearn anywhere. The food gets very repetitive but it's always ok. The shuttle to Havana is great and I strongly suggest a walk around. There are little convenience stores and lots of nice boats to look at.

This is not a good hotel, let me say that right up front. I've stayed in great hotels around the world, this is not one of them but ... I would go back. The toilet ran all night, lights didn't always work, the elevator was almost as reliable and the air conditioning was random at best. The food was average at best, the entertainment was OK and the bar wasn't always stocked. The beach was sad and the resort was far from town. On the other hand, it was clean and safe, friendly and helpful. The staff tried hard, everybody was nice and it cost $30 a night all inclusive ... if you want a resort, go to Veredaro but if you want a safe home base it's great.

“Don't set high expectations, enjoy your time in a beautiful area of Cuba! ”
We just got back from Club Acuario last night from staying there a week and overall it was very nice to stay in a place that was very close to Habana. I would not recommend to stay here if you are not interested in going to the city or anything because there isn't a lot to do besides drink and swim. We booked this hotel specifically because we were visiting family at the international medical school 15 minutes up the road and we wanted to visit the city of Habana. I read all of the reviews before choosing this hotel and I had low expectations. I can tell you that from my experience this hotel surpassed my expectations. Our Room: We stayed at the furthest building on the left on the second floor in the last room in the hallway. This was only a pain when we had to bring our bags the first night because we got in at 3am and the bell man was not there anymore. Our room was very clean and also very dated as expected. The AC worked very well and at night we had to turn it down because it got way to cold. We had 3 double beds in the room with a standard TV with cable. When we first arrived our shower head was missing and personally we didn't really care because it was still usable. There were little ants in our washroom that would be on the floor sometimes. Our toilet worked fine but it water constantly was running IN the toilet. We never had problems with hot water, leaks or flooding at all. Our room was cleaned everyday with new bedding, towels, toilet paper etc. I want to stress that we are not a picky at all and none of these things bothered us one bit. Arrival: We flew into Jose Marti airport and it is was only a 20 minute drive to the hotel. We got to the hotel at 3am and there was no one at the desk for about 5min and then someone came and checked us in. We had no issues with the booking at all. Food: There are 3 meal times: Breakfast 7am-10am Lunch 1pm-3pm Dinner 7pm-10pm The food is pretty much the same for 7 days. In the evening it is very restaurant like and people will be dressed nicely and there are different local bands that play each night. Some examples of food are: Yuka, potato's, pork, chicken, beef, cucumber salad, bread table, ice cream, and various different fruits. For beverages we stuck with apple juice and orange (tang ) juice. The other juices that were made were very bitter because they do not put sugar in them. In the evening they will also serve white and red wine with dinner. Overall the food is alright, you will get bored of it by the end of your trip though. Bar: There is a bar that is open 24h a day near the pool and this was nice especially when we got to our hotel at 3am and we had a few cervesas before going up to our room. I recommend that your bring a large cup of some sort because they use very small disposable cups, we brought coffee thermos's and that worked very well. There is also a lobby bar which is more high end where they have a menu of drinks and they are served in glasses. This bar is only open from 10am - 10pm. Staff: We loved the people who worked there and the staff at the admin desk were always very helpful. Teresa was the person who cleaned our room daily and she was wonderful and made sure we had everything we needed in our room. We left lots of gifts for the staff and tiped them when we had good service. You will find out that anywhere you go in Havana you are expected to tip for any kind of service. I noticed that people mentioned that items went missing from their room, this never happened to us but we also locked our valuables in our luggage when ever we went anywhere, even to get a drink at the bar. Shuttle: There is a shuttle into the city 3 times a day: 10am, 11:30am, and 3:30 am. The shuttle will bring you just outside of Old Havana where there are lots of taxis locals offering tours which I would be very skeptical of. You can pretty much walk everwhere from where the shuttle drops you off. There is a shuttle to East Playa which located next to Hotel Tropicoco and Club Atlantico, The bus leaves from the hotel at 11:30 and goes downtown then to the beach. It takes about 50 minutes to the to the beach and the bus will come and pick you up from the beach at 5pm. The beach has umbrellas and lounge chairs that you can rent for 2$ and you can buy drinks and food on the beach. There very few cuban people when we were there, only on the Sunday there was some families that were using the pool area for the day. The hotel had people from all over the world when I was there including: Finland, China, Canada, USA, Chile, Brazil, England, Scotland, Russia and many more. There was a high diversity of people from all over. Overall the hotel served by needs and it was an excellent place to stay because of the location which is close to the city and the hotel being on the Hemmingway Marina.

        Review about Club Acuario Hotel
        Very good Very good

        “A 3 Star with aspirations ”
All in all we had a great time both at Club Acuario and on our almost daily tours into Havana. 3 star hotels are definitely not for everyone, but this resort served our needs well. The room was basic - the standard two 3/4 beds, shower, dresser, desk, table and two chairs, and a great balcony looking out onto a canal (part of the Marina Hemmingway). The first night we arrived the floor between the bathroom wall and the first bed was covered in a small pool of water, but we discovered that the water was running from the air conditioning unit. We damned it up with a towel so that it did not spread right across the room. We pointed out the problem to the cleaning staff the next day and they adjusted the unit - although there was still water coming out of it and we still kept a towel on the corner, it was not as bad for the rest of our stay. We asked for extra pillows - no problemo - they immediately responded with two more. I would recommend to anyone (unless you really like staying over a bar and entertainment area) to find a way to stay at the back of the hotel where we were. There are also several other Club Acuario buildings on the streets leading up to and away from the main building where we were. They seemed like good places to stay as well. The guests who stay at Club Acuario are a great mix of Canadians from across the country, Cubans (who were on vacation that week), other Spanish speaking folks (probably from Venezuela) and one American (that I was aware of). The food was to our liking, but in chatting with other guests, they were disappointed. I am not sure what they were looking for, but we were fine with the salads, pastas, assorted beverages, piles and piles of fruit, fish every day, pork on some days, lamb on others and twice there was turkey. It was, as with the room, basic, but quite good. Generally, the Marina area is very interesting... we were not looking for beaches, so our daily 2 kilometre walks out to the sea wall and the Straights of Florida watching the fishing boats and the crashing waves were just perfect. There is a relatively well stocked grocery store, a cigar shop and a sports shop, and a bowling alley nearby - all within walking distance. We took several tours with Graviota - the City Tour and the Hemmingway Tour and recommend them both highly. The caveat emptor associated with tours is that the excellence of the tour is related to the excellence of the Tour Guide. Our first guide (City Tour) was fabulous who not only knew his material but made sure he spoke with everyone and made us all feel comfortable, in both English and Spanish and could have also done it in French, if he had needed to. The guide on the Hemmingway Tour took us to some great spots including a fishing village (Cojimar) where Hemmingway had his ranch, but was lacking in the communication skills of the first guide. It's the roll of the tour guide dice, which could happen in any city. We also took advantage of the twice daily free shuttle into the city (about a 25 minute drive) to wander the streets of Havana and absorb the sights and feel of the city. The staff at Club Acuario were friendly, hospitable and did whatever they could within their means to make our stay comfortable. Tipping in Cuba is de rigueur. We tipped in relevance to services rendered. Employees in the tourism industry depend on tips and most of them work hard for them. Tourists to Cuba should never be in a hurry. Things happen, but leave North American timing behind. A very good example of this was our return ride to the airport on New Year's Eve. It was not only a ride to the airport, but also a stop at a mountain top scenic viewpoint for coffee and a bathroom break and an opportunity to buy souvenirs. And, later the driver spotted a man selling legs of pig on his front veranda, and remembering that he needed pork for his family's New Year's celebration, turned the bus around and pulled up to the house so he could buy his leg of pig. Thus our drive to the airport included a pig stop ...try that on the way to the Ottawa airport and see what happens :-). The next time we go, we will find a way to fly into Havana, rather than Varadero - the drive from airport is between 2 to 2 1/2 hours long. So if you leave Ottawa on the 4:30 pm Sunwing flight into Varadero (3 hours and 45 minutes to 4 hours), by the time you land (sit on the tarmac for 20 minutes or so), work your way through Immigration (which can take up to 45 minutes in length and a note here - have all of your paperwork in order and ready to show the immigration officer: your passport, tourist card, boarding pass from your point origin and proof of where you are staying), wait for your luggage, 20 - 30 minutes, exchange your money (if you are going to do it at the airport) - another 20 minutes, and then drive to Club Acuario (about 3 hours) - we finally arrived around midnight. A recommendation about exchanging money into Cuban convertible currency - the Cadecos associated with the Banks in Havana have a better rate than the Cadeco at the Airport or at the Hotel. By the way, the hotel does not always have money available for exchange. And just to sum up...as a 3 star goes, we were very pleased. If your expectations are 5 star and your food tastes are constant gourmet style, then you should probably stay somewhere else.

“Pretty good... too far from Havana ”
I just returned last night from my stay here. This hotel is in a nice location (at Marina Hemmingway) however it is a full 30-40 mins from Havana. The drive to Havana is exciting though and passes quickly. The free shuttle only leaves twice and returns twice during the day. It leaves at 10 am and I think 1ish (pm) and returns at 5pm and 2:30pm. If you take a cab it will usally be $15. My room was clean and modest. I upgraded for $25 (for the entire week) to a junior suite which is 2 full rooms joined with a door. Two beds in one and some chairs etc in the other. I decided to stay here because I was travelling alone and heard it was quite safe ~~ which it was. I used the safe behind the reception desk. The front desk people barely speak english so I found a Cuban to help me out with that. I met many nice people here. The reservation restaurant sucks and only has 3 food selections. The buffet however was pretty decent... turkey, burgers, omelets and pasta to order... lotsa salads. Typical food for Cuba. The pool is superb and the patio bar and area was nice. Very nice staff. Many people had problems with their air conditioning and toilets but I did not. I had LOTS of crystal clear HOT bath water which was a nice surprise. Their weren't tons of people staying here which was nice... until I left when tons of people booked in. I would stay here again if it weren't for the long distance from Havana. Overall I liked it and had a great time. It was usally nice and quiet.

“Nice hotel avoid using Caribbean Travel Network ”
Booked 2 night for my wife using CaribbeanTravelNetwork.com. When she arrived they knew nothing about the reservation and she had to pay herself. Caribbean Travel Network refuses to respond to emails. My wife was pleased with the hotel. She enjoyed the service, the food and the music by the pool. Staff were friendly and helpfull. Great value for money.

“Best service and hotel yet! ”
It was my first strip to Havana, Cuba. I spent a week there. The service at the hotel is unbelievable. Everyone working there is kind, friendly and go out of their way to make your experience a good one. I especially found this at the restaurant, where I needed special food requirements-I only eat seafood. The chef there, Simon ensured to meet my need by making fish for me every day even though it wasn't part of their menu (they had pork and meat for their menu). His care and understanding is what reflected amongst the people there. Attending to needs in our suite was super. One time, our light went off and within minutes, the electrician came to put a new light. The hotel is super clean, the view is fabulous overlooking the ports and at a distance you can see the seaside. Entertainment at the hotel is live with different bands performing nightly both in the restaurant, swimming pool and snack bar. Most of all, it is the people who work there who will touch your heart. Their warm friendly attitude will want you coming back again and again. Thanks, Fathima. You can email me for more questions/info at: fh.fahmy@gmail.com Toronto, Ontario, Canada

“Not advertised as a honeymoon hotel ”
We kind of had our honeymoon before, during and after our wedding and this hotel served very well at a very reasonable price. Our room had an enormous bed in it, a very efficient and necessary air conditioning unit, and the cleaning was well-managed according to our needs. The all-inclusive deal gave a range of options for eating and I appreciated good coffee which I had not expected but enjoyed frequently by the pool especially early morning with the peacefulness. The peace and quiet was disturbed especially at the weekends when many holidaying Cubans on day passes turned up ordering unimaginable numbers of burgers but the atmosphere was family-oriented and very lively without being overcrowded as we were always able to get a table. The meals were plentiful and varied due to range but quite repetitive in that range. A handy tip I learned was that if I fancied something sweet at the end of dinner, or thought I might, it was a good idea to pick it up as soon as I saw it because ice-cream is in big demand. Although it is a long way from the centre of Havana, it has the advantage of being near the sea and offering some great opportunities for early morning waterside walks. All in all a very positive experience and I would definitely go back. Oh yes, and the hairdresser came to our room to do my hair and makeup on our wedding day. I hadn't expected that.

        “Excellent place! ”
Have been to this hotel 3 times in the last 2 years and have just rebooked to return again. Staff and management are very friendly and welcoming. The location of the hotel is ideal for visting Havana. Although the hotel does not have a beach, there is a free shuttle bus. There is a great selection of food.Rooms are clean, request the rooms that overlook the Marina and ocean for the best views. Has one large pool which is kept clean. There is weekly entertainment. I would highly recommend this hotel to all couples and single people.
