      Varadero Airport

Juan Gualberto Gomez Airport was built in 1989 and inaugurated by Fidel Castro,[3] thus replacing the old Varadero airport located in Santa Marta, currently known as Kawama Airport. The airport was named after a journalist, fighter for the Cuban Independence and black rights activist in Cuba Juan Gualberto Gómez (1854–1933). The terminal building has shops for tourists (including rum, cigars, T-shirts, books, carvings, pharmaceuticals), a large departures lounge cafeterias and a VIP lounge. A VIP card is available by paying $30/person to the local tour company representative. This allows the departing passenger to bypass the queues for check-in, have an agent take your departure tax to the correct official for you, and bypass any lines for passport control. The passenger is then taken to the VIP lounge which provides free food and drink (including alcoholic beverages).[4] The ground handling equipment is imported mainly from North America. There are four jet bridges, but air stairs are used for the remaining aircraft parking spaces on the apron by the terminal. Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport (IATA: VRA, ICAO: MUVR), formerly known as Varadero Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto de Varadero), is an international airport serving Varadero, Cuba and the province of Matanzas. The airport is located closer to the city of Matanzas than to Varadero. The closest airport to Varadero is Kawama Airport. In 2009, the airport handled 1.28 million passengers,[2] making it the second busiest airport in Cuba after José Martí International Airport in Havana.

        “Good, not great ”
An efficient check in on arrival and taken to our junior master suite bungalow. This was extremely spacious and clean though basic and tired around the edges. A mixed bag of service. Our cleaner, Nancy, was really good and some good lobby bar staff. Japanese restaurant was very good and the buffet. The other restaurants were ok. Entertainment staff were really friendly and enthusiastic to ensure everyone enjoyed themselves though the agenda was very dated. Disappointed the hotel feel the need to charge by the hour for (slow) wireless and the girls at the Internet desk were lethargic (at best) in terms of service and friendliness. Queues at the beach bar were ridiculous. One bar attendant trying his best is simply not enough and the roaming waiter service on the beach was very hit and miss. Cuba is behind the times in terms of technology and modernisation...that's understood. Though lack of consistent, high, friendly service cannot be justified at this hotel.

        “Old World Cuban Charm ”
W are repeat visitors to this hotel. The location is the absolute best for golfers. The hotel is located next to the only golf course in Cuba, a 1 minute walk to the club house and golf is included in the all inclusive. What more than that can you want. The hotel has an amazing sand beach front as well. The hotel certainly exudes "old world Cuban charm"

        “Love MLA”
We have stayed here more than a dozen times and are always warmly welcomed by the amazing staff and this time wowed by some recent changes. We keep coming back to relax, enjoy the golf, beach and atmosphere. The new manager Bernard is very engaged and responsive to guest requests, he walks the walk, setting a great example to his staff. The food is better than ever, they have listened to clients requests and returned to a la carte menu at the Italian restaurant and added a meat option to the seafood restaurant menu. There have been some changes to nightly shows, offering a more interactive party atmosphere for guests. They are listening. The pool party was our first night (after a long travel day, up at 3:00am) still we had a great time dancing and met Deivy a wonderful addition to the animation team. He made sure everyone who wanted to dance got up, he is an excellent dance partner. He spoke to our group and discovered we like Zumba and dance classes, he offered to set up a zumba class for us the next day. It was fantastic and we think this may become a new offering. That's great customer service! The hotel was full to capacity and it was all hands on deck, with management being strategic with their best resource, the Staff. The front patio was very busy and service was spotty there, you needed a little patience and understanding. At times with wet weather everyone was heading to the buffet and there were line-ups, which is unusual. But you could see staff were doing their best to provide service. We received outstanding service with special mention deserved to Angela at reservations, Castro and Julio at the Theatre bar, Katty in the buffet, Irmita, Raul and Javi at the lunch grill. Anabel at Cascada bar and Daniel our favorite bellman. Reynaldo and team for golf reservations, had a challenge with a tournament on and yet we were not disappointed. We were with a large group with Rebecca at Hola Sun Vacations and were upgraded to bungalows. They are quiet and comfortable, but you can't go wrong with any room in the tower either. Beds are still quite firm, our maid did the best she could to make us comfortable. There is never a problem finding a palapas on the beach, other than golf we didn't do any excursions except to Santa Marta, a short cab ride to El Mojito restaurant which is a seafood treat. We travel extensively, but returning to MLA is like coming home for us. We'll see you again soon!

        “Great Varadero Hotel! ”
We have just returned from a 10 day trip to Varadero, Cuba. We stayed at the all-inclusive Melia Las Americas. The hotel is located on a beautiful stretch of white sand beach. Check-in was fast and efficient. Our room was clean, and well-maintained throughout our stay. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. The food at the buffet was good. The à la carte restaurants were very good, but, it was difficult to get the reservations that we wanted. Tip: make your reservations for the à la cartes as soon as you arrive! The bar service was good at each of the 4 bars that we went to. The entertainment at the Teatro was energetic and exciting. The entertainment at the romantic La Cascada Bar featured a musical show by a couple by the name of Giancarlo and Bianka. They were terrific! Real love and passion in all their songs! We will go back again.

        “Caribbean Gem ”
We stayed here for a week, after a very busy 4 days in Havana. A much needed rest, and what a great choice we made, without doubt the best adult only resort in the area. The drive down from Havana is about 2hrs, and back to Havana airport takes 2.30 hrs, the roads not bad, and the drivers do run at the 100 kilom speed limit. On arrival, the reception staff are very efficient and handle large numbers very quickly, 4 on duty the day we checked in, delay was normal for a busy hotel, and the staff were dealing with some very drunk and quite aggressive Eastern Europeans, so well done to them for the way they handled, some very intimidating people. Our room was within the main building of the hotel, sea facing, and was of a good quality, all perfectly average stuff for a resort of this size. We had trouble during the night with the same Eastern European crowd, very noisy and drunk. The next morning we asked to see a manager, and very quickly we had the general manager and the customer service manager talking to us, we were delighted with the very efficient and apologetic way the management team dealt with our problem. Within the hour, we were moved to a junior suite bungalow, which was a very generous offer, and we can only thank the team for making our holiday such a great one. If you can afford one of these, go for it, they are so quiet and set in beautiful grounds and pools, even your own bars and grills... Fantastic. The hotel is a wonderful place, very modern, spotlessly clean, and runs without fault, the bars are very quick in dealing with the high demand put on them, and stock just about every type of alcohol you can think of, and some I'd never seem before. Restaurants are of a high quality, the main buffet restaurant has a huge variety of food, all types of fresh vegetables and fruit, everyone can find something they like, and the speciality restaurants must be sampled, very very high quality food and service, but you must book for these. We cannot find any fault with the hotel, or the staff, all were friendly, and helpful, and the management team seem to be on duty all the time, walking around the hotel and grounds. Anything you want to know, just ask. The beach was beautiful white soft sand, cleaned and raked everyday, and spotless, plenty of beds and shade. The sea was 25* and the fantastic colour only found in the Caribbean. Very gentle slope out to deeper water, and again so clean. We will always recommend this resort, and will return here on our next trip to Cuba. Thank you Sr. Bernard Meyer, general manager, and Zahily Martines, quality manager for making our trip, and holiday such a wonderful memory.

        “Enjoyed our stay! ”
We stayed from the 25th of October to the 1st of November, 2014. We enjoyed our stay very much and definitely would return. The one big drawback was the beds. Instead of a king size bed we had two twin beds pushed together. It made for some interesting "night moves". The view from our second floor room was not great as we were not in our room very much it wasn't a concern but if you like to have a good view you need to be higher than the second floor. Can't tell you about the tv as we never had it on. The drinks were good, be sure to have a Mojito! We found the bar "Las Americas" (the one that serves food) to have slow service. It seemed as though the Spanish speaking guests had faster service. So we switched to the other side of the lobby and the service was great. The food in the buffet was great! Mercedes and her "crew" in the buffet were the best! I preferred it to the A La Carte restaurants. The beach was fantastic. We had a couple of yellow flagged days and a few green flagged days. We were in the ocean everyday. I had a massage on the beach. It was great and well priced, I felt. We didn't go to the theater as we preferred to stay outside. Overall I very much enjoyed our stay and we would go back again. My only negative thing was when we left the resort we were bothered by people asking for "gifts". "Do you have something in your bag for my baby?" was something we heard a lot. Not on the resort though. Also, it was not too far of a drive from the airport.

        “Out of this world ”
Where do I start, this hotel was chosen as the location of our belated Honeymoon, we arrived after 3 nights in Havana. Room On arrival we were told we had been upgraded to a junior suite and given special Honeymooners bands, well the room 0110 was on the ground floor but in a really quite area of the property, it was spread over two floors with two bathrooms, we wanted for nothing, there was a fridge with beers soft drinks and water which was refilled everyday without fail. Bars The hotel has so many bars I lost count, the two poshest are situated either side of the lobby, I have been to all inclusive before and expected spirits to be local, "Gin and Tonic please" " Yes sir Gordons,Bombay,Beefeater,Tackeray or Harveys" Wow. These bars stay open 24 hours !!! There is also a bar on the beach, another by the main pool (service amazing thank you Raul and the lovely lady with glasses sorry your name escapes me) and finally a bar in the second pool, we didnt realise this second pool was there until day 3 but it is a jewel, this bar also has a snack bar it is run by Alberto and Chef again may be a snack bar but everything cooked fresh to order, i had the most amazing chicken i have eaten in my life, how did he get the skin so crispy !!! Restaurants There is the standard buffet style but the quality is as high as i have ever experienced on an AI holiday, plenty of very tasty buffet style fare plus a chef cooking steak chicken pork to order another cooking 5 different fish to order another cooking pasta to order both lunch and dinner. Breakfast here was again amazing lots cooked to order juices fresh. Other than the the Buffet restaurant there are another 4 restaurants which you eat in once each during your stay. Italian and Japanese we didnt make (sorry) There fish restaurant by the main pool, amazing service, open air sound of the ocean, 5* food and even better service. This restaurant also serves a 3 course a la carte lunch of equal standard. Finally the international restaurant, Lobster . Steak again cooked to the very highest standard desert flambe , amazing , we eat in this restaurant 3 times and never had a bad mouthful. Entertainment The entertainment staff work tirelessly on the beach during the day, always up to something but never pushy, but always a smile and a hello. The shows in the evening Wow say no more the quality of the dancers brilliant. Location Set amongst the most well kept grounds i have ever seen, on the edge of an amazing white sandy beach with plenty of beds, plenty of shade if required General Manager Bernard is the big boss but he was seen everyday doing the rounds talking to guests and what a memory for names (He knew ours before we told him and he never forgot) Overall I am sorry I cannot praise this Hotel enough and trust me I can moan and complain with best of them, every single member of staff from Bernard down was so customer focused it was scary , I don't think during the 11 nights i ever saw a member of staff without a smile on their face, so yes you could have an equally as nice hotel with an equally as nice beach but you will NEVER EVER get a hotel with the customer service as the Melia Las Americas. I have tried to thing of something negative to say I cannot Thank you Bernard and your team for the most amazing Honeymoon ever (we will be back one day) Family Austin

        Beach very good
The Meliá Las Américas Hotel, located in the world-famous beach resort of Varadero, is seven kilometers from downtown. The establishment has a privileged location by the beach, very close to an 18-hole golf course, the largest in Cuba. The hotel is 35 kilometers from Juan Gualberto Gómez International Airport, and is an excellent place for congress and incentive tourism, weddings and honeymoons.
