La Vizcaya Project, to the rescue of the rum tradition in Cardenas

Cárdenas, a municipality located north of the Cuban province of Matanzas, boasts a tradition in the manufacture of liquors that dates back to the 19th century. Here, the local development project La Vizcaya is part of a large movement to rescue the city's historic sites.

The idea, joint and interdisciplinary between the Ronera Cárdenas -a factory unit of the Cuba Ron Corporation-, regional authorities and the Association of Historians of the city, harmoniously combines local history, rum culture and care for the environment. According to the Cuba Ron website, the project is located in a founding warehouse of the old Arechabala industry, in order to reactivate the architectural roots of Cuban rum manufacturing.

In the exterior areas of the warehouse, the historical processes of rum will be simulated, and a cane plantation, a sugar mill and facilities for the preparation and sale of drinks such as canchánchara, saoco or the juice of the cane will be present on a smaller scale. (guarapo). A tasting room and liquor store will be added to the facilities, where homage will be paid to the Masters of Cuban Rum. A shop, a coffee bar, an exclusive piano bar that will feature the original decoration on the walls of the industry, an art gallery and three allegorical bars to the three geographical regions of the country and the rums that are produced in each of them , will complete the set.

Milagros Ortega, director of the Ronera Cárdenas, highlighted the importance of the rescue of this building for Cárdenas, based on the fact that it is an emblematic industry in the economic and social development of the area that now appears with renewed airs. With the La Vizcaya project, the path to the rescue of the entire coastal coastline and of the buildings located in the area, including the port, begins. The directive also pointed out that the rescue of heritage has always been a key line of work for Cuba Ron, as well as the promotion of the centennial culture in the production of Cuban Light Rum and the creation of a new value in the Matanzas-Varadero tourist destination. .

It is expected, in a first stage, to recover the investment and generate profits destined to the continuous improvements of the industry for the production of rum and the well-being of the workers. In addition, 10% of the result obtained will be used for municipal development. The next step, Ortega explained, will be the recovery of the Malecón of Carden and of a building of great architectural splendor, now in disuse.

Cárdenas, a colonial town a few kilometers from Varadero, celebrated the 193rd anniversary of its founding on March 8. It is known as "the Flag City of Cuba", since it waved there for the first time, on May 19, 1850, which today is recognized as the national ensign.
