Rating Camaguey City
Camagüey city, the capital of the province bearing the same name, is among the ones that better preserves Spanish- Arabian characteristics of urbanism and architecture. Its many churches have noteworthy examples of art and religiousfunerary traditions of the colonial epoch. It has the largest historical center of the country (313 ha) declared National Monument. Its urban design is very singular in Cuba. It is characterized by narrow and winding streets and alleys that make up a labyrinthlike design. Pathways begin or end up at the squares and esplanades that became centric points due to the enhancement of the village. There we have pottery among the strong traditions of the region, which dates from the 17th century. Camaguey is the homeland to major general Ignacio Agramonte, a prime figure of the 1868 Revolution and protagonist, together with his wife Amalia Simoni, of one of the best love episodes in Cuban land. In this territory was also born Carlos J. Finlay, a scientist who, with his investigations on the transmitter agent of yellow fiver that changed the medicine of his time and set the basis for tropical medicine, and Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, one of the most important figures of the Hispano- American literature. Other illustrious people from that region are the philosopher Enrique José Varona, the painter Fidelio Ponce and National Poet Nicolás Guillén. Camaguey is a land of legend, big earthenware jars and churches: of façades with archivolts and pillars, windows with precious wrought irons, houses with roofs descending in only one current and interior thresholds leading to a patio of tranquility and shadow, humidity and fresh air that transmit that old flavor to the city which it does not want to get rid of.
