      “Absolutely awful ”
This hotel is the worst we have stayed in a long time. The staff are so unfriendly it is not even funny, the room was small with leaking air conditioning which ran into our room, the bathroom was dirty and the beds grubby. The pool is something else whoever took the photo of it on this site must be joking. It was full of noisy, dirty people with all their own food and music. I have never come across such awful staff in all my life and thankfully we were there only one night but even that was too long. The breaksfast was not very good. Would not recommend it.

      “Rooms without windows!!!! ”
It is not worth to accommodate if you have other alternatives. If you have room in front of building ( road side) no problem. But others are terrible. Windows were small and above your head level. Impossible to see outside. In bath room hair drier was not working and they did not have spare one. So bring yours together in order not to have similar surprise like me. Dinner and breakfast -> limited menu but eatable.

Postage stamp sized room with a low cot. An ac stuck in a tiny window overlooking a roof. and a bathroom an average person has to turn sideways to enter. Forget it! Not even for one night is this hotel worth staying at.

“If this is the best in Camaguey, then thats kinda sad.”
Hotel is centrally located within a decent part of the city, however it is not so easy to find. The Lobby is boringly styled, but thats not the problem The problem lay with the staff. The people working there generally did not want to help you with much, and smiling was definitly something that happened rarely for the hotel staff. The room located on the fourth floor was decent. The loud air conditioning unit taking up the only window was not so nice. I didn't realize till later that night that the loudness of the air conditioner was not as bad as the loudness of the street. The bathroom was very acceptable and probably the only redeeming quality. Breakfast in the morning was served upstairs, and had what you would expect from a cuban hotel. The views from that room were nice, but I guess they were only available during the breakfast hour. The Lobby piano bar which I read about in the lonely planet, was lacking a piano. and the adjoining restaurant was frequented too much by locals and like the rest of the hotel Noone smiles. On checkout day the elevator was broken so that meant 4 floors down to lobby with luggage in the narrow stairwell.

      “terrible, what a mess! ”
never go there. They told us they couldn't find our reservation and they sent us to another hotel out of town. Later they phoned telling us that they made a mistake. Finally we went back just to get our money back but the gave us a credit note with wrong name, discussion not possible. Furthermore: they were restyling the hotel, so noise everywhere. Their administration is a complete mess as we saw lots of others walking away with the same excuse: sorry we don't have your reservation....! We finally stayed in hotel Camaguey with was okay, on the road to Santiago de Cuba, just out of town.

As a party of 11 travelling around Cuba foe two weeks this was definitely the lowest standard !!!Many had to change rooms !!The first thing I noticed was cigarette burns on the shabby bedspread ,I did point it out to the bell boy but he didn't change it !!Yes the architecture is interesting but as a seasoned traveller more could easily be done .The air conditioning was so noisy it was the worst night sleep of the tour !! Breakfast was fine but no staff around as they were too busy eating it them selves !! On the plus side it was in the centre of town so easy to walk around and see the shops churches etc

      “A so-so experience ”
To be honest, this was probably one of the good places in town but overall not a very good one. The reception area was cosy enough, the staff was pleasant and attentive, and our bags were brought to our rooms. However, our two rooms were small, smelled musty and appeared out-dated. There was no safe and the rooms faced a brick-wall outside the Windows. The rooms are situated around a centre courtyard which could have been a cosy feature. The breakfast buffet is placed on the top floor with a nice view over the town - and this can be enjoyed even more from the roof-top terrace one storey up from the restaurant. However, the food was close to unedible and the presentation of it not exactly appetising - the flies seemd to like it though. Luckyly, this was a 'fly-by' one-night stay. I would not recommend this hotel, but I do not know if there are better alternatives in the town.

      “Another Islazul disappointment ”
After having had a bad experience at an Islazul hotel in Holguin, we were hoping for a better experience in Camaguey. This was not to be. The hotel lobby was attractive and the room was small and simple but adequate. The standards of catering, organisation and service left much to be desired. Indeed, the staff in the dining room at breakfast were more interested in talking amongst themselves and taking their own breakfasts from the buffet than looking after the paying guests. The breakfast buffet was poor quality and unappetising. One morning, ice cream wafers and 6 squares from a bar of chocolate are all that were available on the 'sweet/bread' section of the buffet. The evening buffet also looked unappetising so we didn't eat in the hotel in the evening. Management was also bizarre. At lunch, a request in the bar for a tuna sandwich with a portion of fries was turned down due to there being 'no potatoes today'. However, within the next hour, other people were eating fries. It turned out that fries are only served with burgers or steaks and not with sandwiches. The area around the pool is limited. We were pleased to see, however, five sun loungers - until we realised every one was broken. We would certainly never return and could not recommend this hotel.

“Good location, but very loud, small rooms, bad buffet”
We stayed for two nights, Saturday night and a Sunday night. This hotel is located towards the middle of a very busy shopping/eating strip. Which seemed a little odd to me. Our room was nice (Cuban Standards :), with a balcony overlooking the front "strip." The balcony was nice, except that the air conditioner unit was right above the balcony door, so you would get dripped on as you walked out. Again, being located on this strip made it pretty convenient, close to food, entertainment, and shopping. However, it also made it nearly impossible to get any peace and quiet. The air conditioning unit is extremely loud, which should have been great at downing out the noise, but it didn't even come close. I could hear loud laughing and people screaming all night, even with ear plugs in. At 3am, I couldn't take it any longer and asked to be moved to another room. They moved us to an interior room, which was about half the size. Despite this size, this room would have been great, if it hadn't been located right off the huge courtyard area in the middle of the hotel, that looks down on their bar area. It seems there are NO quiet rooms in this hotel. I thought perhaps it may have been that it was a Saturday night, however our Sunday night was no different, noise wise. In addition, the food at the restaurant buffet was awful. Finally the elevator was broken so we had to carry heavy suit cases up three flights of extremely narrow stairs. If you find yourself in Cameguey, I recommend that you seek out another hotel. If you opt to stay at the Islazul Gran Hotel I hope you are a very heavy sleeper and recommend you eat at one of the lovely paladars in the area.

“READ CAREFULLY IF YOU HAVE A CAR ”
A hotel with an excellent location in the center of Camaguey, with a restaurant on the top floor with great views overlooking the entire city. However, we did have a very serious issue with the hotel staff regarding our rental car. Upon arrival we were asked to leave our the keys to our car at the reception desk and were assured that the hotel staff would handle the parking. As we stayed two nights in Camaguey and did everything by foot, we actually didn't use the car until we left the city two days later. To our surprise when we were brought the car (by Edgar), we first noticed that more than a half of a full tank of gas had disappeared and then that over 300 kilometers had been added on the meter! We asked to speak to the hotel manager who claimed that this had never happened before and was at a loss to explain how this had transpired. Edgar, the man who brought us the car, told us that he didn't have the key with him at all times and left it at the reception desk at night. In any case, at some point our car was used during our stay while in Camaguey-- and 300km plus over a half tank of gas! *NOTE- The swimming pool is rather small and is open to the general public until 5pm. As a result, don't count on enjoying it until very late afternoon...

      “Only if you must ”
Stayed at the hotel one night (luckily) on a group tour. The hotel is situated in a pedestrian area, so the bus (and cars) cannot drive up to it. Prepare to hoist your luggage. The hotel looks nice from the outside, and even the lobby is reasonable by Cuban standards, but then it turned out they have no elevator (under re-construction). Luckily we had a room on the first floor, Which doesn't mean much because the dining room is on the top floor (6) and we had to climb anyway. The room was tiny with no space to open two suitcases. Beds were two separated singles. only good thing was the air conditioning, Food was OK, nothing special. They had a program of entertainment which turned out to be not relevant because there were festivities in the town, so they cancelled it. Bottom line: if this is hotel #3 - they have a very long way to go!

      * In the city centre * breakfast was served in the top restaurant: juice, cake and rolls > basic, but hygenic and good * sun comes into the restaurant and you have a view over the city, which is nice * lobby is nicely decorated * BAD: the room > tiny little bathroom * room at street side > no glass in the windows, only wooden blinds + speaker on the outside wall > radio Cuba starts playing in the street at 6.00 am !!! Noise from people on the street only stops at about 2 am! * 4 hours of sleep while on holiday > no thanks!

“Still has signs of great character”
Firstly if you are driving to this hotel, Camaguey city is very difficult to navigate. On the out-shirt of the city centre as if by magic a cyclist appeared and asked where we were heading. The Gran we explained. Follow me he replied and before we new it he had lead us through the many one way systems and stopped in a street where he pointed to a man who showed us where to park. By magic again porters from the Gran hotel appeared and whisked us off along a pedestrianised street to the hotel. The Gran is still retaining many of its original charms. We liked the room and bathroom but we had a noisy AC so had to sleep without it. This said we had a restful first night, beds were comfortable and room wasn't to hot. We also liked the roof top bar and loved the 5th floor restaurant especially at breakfast when they would open all the windows and doors. Buffet breakfast was plentiful, of a good standard and choice. There's a bar on the ground floor and a restaurant adjoining the reception area. Also a small swimming pool where they put on a show to group tours in the evening which we were told was entertaining. We didn't have time to use the pool as Camaguey is a great city plenty to explore and we're pleased we decided to stay 2 nights. Unfortunately on the second night a group arrived that were extremely noisy and seemed to chain smoke through the night as their stench drifted through the hotel from the ground floor bar up to every room, our room was on the 3rd floor and as our AC wasn't good we had a very unpleasant night. The hotel needs to get the ventilation sorted out if they insist on allowing inconsiderate people to stay there, better still ban them. We would have rated this hotel far higher if this had not happened. The hotel is charismatic and very atmospheric we liked it a lot just a shame about certain selfish clientele.

      “A Gem of 30's Nostalgia ”
First impressions as you enter the lobby of this striking city hotel, are wow, where is the film crew. This is not grand deco, more authentic regular travelers 1930s hotel lobby, and all the more intriguing for it. These first impressions carry through as you take the eccentric lift to the authentic deco rooms - complete with erratic electrics and dodgy aircon. It is impossible not to love this beautiful throw-back hotel, it is so completely in keeping with the city and the country. Any inconvenience in the service or amenities is more than compensated for by the atmosphere. Breakfast was a formulaic collection of watered down carton juices and tired bread, with some bits of sweaty cooked food and aging cheese slices - HOWEVER, I would still go back. It won't stay this way for long.

“Charming and not bad by Cuban standards”
Overall this hotel is not bad considering it is government run and by Cuban standards had some nice qualities. Just do not go in expecting a 3 star resort. The pros - very charming hotel. Loved the old architecture, the cobblestone street, the rooftop deck, and they made great drinks. The breakfast buffet, while not a ton of choices, did make very good omelettes and had a nice selection of juice to choose from. The cons - noisy air conditioner, the sheets did not reach the edge of the mattress (I had a double bed but heard on the twin beds it did hit the edge), and take the bedspread off as soon as you walk in the door.

By Cuban standards it wasn't a bad hotel. The room was clean, the beds comfortable but it was very noisy on the street below. The air conditioning was noisy but necessary. I like the colonial feel and look of the hotel, and it was convenient for touring the town. No Internet, but then Cuban Internet is not with having. Nice city view from the roof. We stayed here for two nights, and found the hotel nice for cuban standards. It was clean, and the rooms have A/C, but the lobby and restaurant were conditioned while we were there (it was 90+ degrees with 90% humidity). The rooftop deck offers great views of the city (it's one of the tallest building in Camaguey). Since we were on a hosted tour, we had no choice of hotels, but like all the ones on our tour, this was nice enough.

“Old colonial hotel right in the centre of town. ”
We stayed in this hotel one night en route for Santiago as part of an organised Cuba tour. One has to start by saying this is Cuba - and one has to adjust one's expectations down a notch compared with many countries as it is poor and renovations only recently started generally. First impression is of a very grand hotel which when you enter you feel you have been transported back in time. Large lobby with wooden paneling and a central garden area which is partly overlooked by the floors above. Reception service was good and they were quick to come and 'fix' the air con - which actually wasn't broken but needed the key card to be inserted in a different way in the room slot. The room was very small with a tiny window with a wooden shutter - too high to see out of. The air conditioner was noisy and only partly effective, beds clean and quite comfy. Lights in the room were dim. Bathroom reasonably clean (Cuba style - ie superficially) hot water was slow to come and more a trickle than a gush. The restaurant was on the top floor and the service was poor with a manager who had a 'couldn't care less' attitude. Food - fair choice of cold and warm (not hot) dishes - none particularly inspiring at dinner or breakfast. Breakfast was a choice of various dried up breads, cereals, sweetened juices, milks and warmed vegetable and meat dishes which looked remarkably similar to some dinner choices! Omlettes of course - cheese, ham, onions, or a kind of mince (probably best avoid the mince). In the evening we went down to the charming pool (charming to look at - not necessarily to get into). They had a water ballet show which consisted of various pairs of men and women dressed in sparkly body suits performing various slightly synchronised movements in and out of the water - actually it was fun in a funny sense. Bar around the pool made very strong Cuba Libres (rum and coke)! So overall - I quite liked it here - as mentioned above one has to be forgiving (to an extent) in Cuba and the charm of this place and central location outweighed the gripes for me. (unlike the Hotel Camaguey where we stayed on the trip back........) Recommended.

The Colonial hotel Islazul Gran Hotel is located right in the Camaguey city centre. The hall and the breakfast terrace at the top are amazing, in colonial style: it is just like a jump in the past...! Rooms are not superb though... Not too clean and very old fashioned. Unfortunately, going on with our trip all over Cuba, we noticed that this is quite normal. Breakfast was good though and the view from the terrace is just amazing!

I stayed 3 nights in Room 401. The door to this room opened onto a small reception room with a mini-fridge. The main room was large with a double bed, dim lighting, old wooden furniture, tiled bath (only occasional hot water), tall doors opening onto a teeny balcony with good city views, powerful AC, and a flat screen TV. No in-room safe, but there are security boxes available at the front desk for a fee of 2 CUC per day. The elevator worked most of the time. The views from the 5th floor restaurant are very good but the breakfast & dinner buffets were only mediocre at best.

      “Classic but difficult ”
The hotel is hard to get to. If you're traveling by bus, your driver will need to know the labyrinthine streets well in order to get you near the back door (the closest access); I have no idea what you'd do if you had a car. Taxi or pedicab are the best bet. The hotel has a big-city feel despite the pedestrian mall in front, and the two nights we were there, the city was extremely noisy: the first night, loud outdoor music was still going on when we got up at 5:30 a.m. Fortunately, the air-conditioning units are also very noisy, which almost drowns out the racket. If you have any tendency to claustrophobia, the stainless-steel-lined elevators will give you the creeps. (I'm usually fine with elevators, but I took the stairs.) Our bathroom had a broken doorknob, and one of us got locked in until we figured out how to jury-rig it. The shower was nice, though the amenities were minimal (just soap). The restaurant had a decent buffet, and you can eat on the roof, though there's no service up there. Drinks were about 50% more expensive here than elsewhere other than Havana.

“A Taste of the Past in Camaguey ”
We stayed in this 1939 vintage hotel for two nights and were pleased with its pedestrian mall location and its ambiance. Room 202 had functioning air conditioning and was very clean. Its small balcony on the front of the hotel was a nice feature, though it could be a bit noisy in the late afternoon. The high ceilings and crown molding with original doors are charming, as are other features of the hotel, including the roof garden. Other folks in our university sponsored latin jazz/ art tour were not so pleased with their rooms, so that may account for the variety of reviews on this site. With 12 foot ceilings, the room size was just fine for the two of us. The breakfast buffet was very decent and the service and a simple tomato and cheese sandwich at the small coffee shop in the hotel was very nice. We found the wait staff, the housekeeping, and the front desk staff to be more than kind - the goodness of traveling well beyond Havana. For those who traveled to Europe in the 70's or South America in the early 90's this hotel is remindful of a typical businessman's' hostelerie of that era. Who knows - Fidel might have stayed here back in the day!

True; Camagüey is a labyrinth and the hotel isn't the easiest to find, but once you arrive, the hotel looks nice and the lobby is nicely restaurated. The front desk staff looks if they do not really care, and probably don't, which probably explains why they are letting through intimidating touts and jineteras (prostitutes) into the bar. They will walk up to you and offer you their service. I cannot explain how a hotel can let this happen. The top floor restaurant (breakfast buffet is over average) is fine and the room was nice and clean, but our experience at the lobby really left a bitter taste. Would not go to Camagüey again in any case, and certainly not stay at the Gran Hotel.

We chose this hotel because of it's location. Do not expect too much ! this hotel is not only state owned like all others but, state run at the same time. Neither expect a warm welcome nor an excellent hospitality. In such a governemental sytem there is no unemployment problem, everybody has a job. You work with all your hart or you pretend to work, you get your salary ! This a brief summary. I speak spanish that's why I didn't face any communication problem. Please prepare yourself so that you will face the most limited conditions of your Cuban vacation and that will be only one (or max. two) nights. Dark rooms, some smell in rooms, extremely limited access to the lift and a very modest breakfast ! Don't blame anybody neither be upset for anything. Their limits are so.

“4* amenities, good location, nice decor; 1* service, noisy rooms ”
My parents (60) and I (23) did a tailor-made tour of Cuba in July/August 2010. We stayed in Camaguey for 1 night, using it primarily as a half-way point between Trinidad and Santiago de Cuba. The Gran Hotel Camaguey was, in my opinion, a good 4* hotel, but the service really let it down, which is why I?ve given it 3. I?ll break my review into sections: Check-in/front desk staff: we had booked, and paid for, a double room and a single room, but on check-in they tried to place us in a triple room. My mum accepted at first, but I insisted on the rooms we had booked and paid for, and suddenly, it wasn?t an issue. It may have been a genuine error, but my feeling is that they were trying it on; and they nearly got away with it. We were not told what time breakfast was, or given any info on the hotel facilities (eg pool opening hours). There were two porters/bell boys in the lobby, who completely ignored us, leaving us to take our own cases and bags (not great after 5 hours on the road; plus I have back and pelvic pain). I?m sure we could have asked, but really, this service should be offered. Rooms: we had a single and a double. The double was very compact; the single much more spacious, but with a much more compact bathroom. Rooms were nice and clean with comfy beds; AC (when I got it to work) was very efficient. Satellite TV in all rooms. Decent wardrobe space, plus bedside tables and a dressing table. Bathroom was fully functioning with a good hairdryer and rainforest showerhead. There are no safes in the rooms, which may put some people off; we locked valuables in our case and had no issues. The rooms were not at all soundproofed and I was disturbed by people banging doors, shouting, etc: I would strongly advise bringing earplugs! Amenities: the hotel offered very good amenities IMO. They have a small pool, which was nicely set out and very clean, with a poolside bar. There is a ?piano bar? leading onto a pretty courtyard, which is very pleasant for drinks. There is a roof-top bar with stunning views open late afternoon until late at night, with plenty of seating. There is also an adjoining snack bar, which we thought we be expensive, but was unbelievably cheap (80 cent for a sandwich; 2 CUC for fried chicken and chips). Breakfast: along with the staff, this also let the hotel down. The selection was poor: eggs cooked to order, very small amount of fruit, a couple of pastries, and a couple of hot items. One type of juice, and tea and coffee. OK, but not as good as other breakfasts we?ve had. Location: excellent, very central: close to sights, bars, and restaurants. I really liked this hotel overall; I loved the traditional decor, and thought it offered very good amenities (like the pool and bars) for a city hotel. Were it not for the room issue, the noisy rooms, and the unhelpful staff, I would probably have given this hotel 4/5. If anyone would like any further info, please don?t hesitate to contact me.

      “Could have been better! ”
Stayed at the Gran Hotel for 2 nights during our 3 week Cuba road trip. This hotel would have been a much better experience for us if it hadn't been for the ongoing building work taking place on the same floor level as our room. We literally had to hurdle mounds of debris to get to our room at all times of the day. This proved difficult at nightime with the corridors unlit. Buiding work started early (about 7am). However, the hotel was clean enough and food was decent for cuban standards. The room wasn't cleaned the following day so we had to ask reception. The views of the town from the roof were good. Rooms were basic and quite small. Also beware of the hustlers on bikes when you first arrive into town. They are a nightmare to shake off. In the end we had to succumb to them as Camaguey is a difficult place to navigate. On the positive side, we met a lovely old man in Camaguey who we chatted to on a park bench during lunch.

“Good location, but that's about it ”
Well located in centre of town. Room was facing the street and was incredibly noisy - some kind of air-conditioning unit on the building opposite was working very loudly all night. Room and bathroom generally clean though. Breakfast not very exciting.

“Average hotel, great view from the restaurant and the terrace ”
Gran hotel of Camaguey is a good alternative to a casa paticular. It is a nice old stile hotel with a great terrace and a fantastic view on the city. The rooms are ok but with very noisy airconditioning and some rooms - like ours - have a very nice view on the main street of camaguey. Many members said the rooms were noisy because of the music from the street, but the problem can be easily solved by turning on the air conditioning :-) The buffet at dinner is one of the best meals I had in my trip to Cuba, also compared to 5* hotels around the island and the breakfast was OK. They have also a pool (small and dirty) with a bar and a nice piano bar where they make salsa lessons.

“Great Location in the Heart of the City ”
This hotel is in a great location! A very nice little courtyard inside. The rooms were kind of small and they all had a bathroom scale in them which was interesting. The bathrooms were nice and the shower was huge. Not much of a window which was high and you couldn't see out, but the rooms were clean. They had a lounge on the top floor that was open to the outside and you got some great panoramic views of the city. We watched the sun set from up there. The restaurant was on the top floor as well and you had great views of the city. The food was good and the service was also good. At night they preformed a water ballet for us which was very entertaining.

      “Great location, okay facilities ”
Stay here because of location. Hotel is on main shopping street and close to interesting squares, art galleries, churches. I would grade the hotel as three stars. Was adequate as to room, service, etc. Good breakfast buffet.

      “Charming hotel ”
We stayed there for one night on February 2013. We were not planning to stay at this hotel but we were transferred there after a mistake in our reservation at another hotel. We stayed in a suite which was very charming. Furniture and decoration were colonial, the room was quite spacious and clean and overall it had a special character. Location of the hotel is ideal, in the heart of Camaguei, but this is also the main disadvantage because it is very noisy, especially the rooms facing the main road like ours. Just opposite of the hotel there is a night club and music and people are heard clearly all night long, even on the upper floors. Breakfast was satisfying, served on the upper floor with nice views all over Camaguei.

“Another Colonial Hotel with Atmosphere ”
The location is in the heart of what is considered a difficult place to negotiate given the twisting and narrow streets. Our room was spacious with TV, good air conditioning (no noise) and bed quality. The room was also very clean. The bathroom was fine although not huge with only soap available as an amenity. Water was hot at all times. WiFi was available but again slow due to the lack of broadband. Credit cards were accepted. I was stuck in the lift along with two other tourists. The reason for the breakdown was due o one of the others hitting all the buttons with her backpack, i.e. caution was not observed. There was a rapid response to the alarm being sounded and once the electronics had been reset we were on our way. It took between 5 to 10 minutes. Breakfast was a large buffet with egg station. It was heaving with people but nothing ran out. The swimming pool is a good feature in a crowded town. There is also a separate quiet courtyard available in which to sit.

      “Vintage style hotel ”
We stayed at this hotel for 1 night during our country tour. Initially our tour program said Hotel Camaguey and we were really concerned since it was rated last here on TA. So when we ended up at Gran hotel it was a huge relief. The hotel is located in the center of the city on a pedestrian only street, so you will need a little walk from your car or bus. It has a nice vintage colonial design. The rooms are relatively small, but for 1-2 nights its completely okay. We stayed on the second floor and our room had a nice little balcony overlooking the street in front of the hotel. It was a little noisy at night, maybe because we stayed there over the weekend. So if you want more silence, ask for a room with other view. The a/c was very noisy, so we switched it off for the night. One big surprise - the windows do not have any glass in it, its just wooden blinds that could be shut completely or opened to let some sun in. Think it was the first time we've stayed in a hotel with no proper windows. But it was not such a big problem, just something I would like to point out. There was a window in the bathroom too - same thing as in the room. The shower was great though. Best of all Cuban hotels we've stayed in. One thing we surely didn't enjoy at all is the broken elevator. Thank God they've put us on the 2nd floor, otherwise it would have been an adventure to get the bags down on check-out. It seemed that the hotel was empty when we stayed there, nevertheless the service was great, they've even opened the retaurant for dinner just for the 4 of us. The food was so-so, but the restaurant has a great view onto the city, be sure not to miss it.

“Not a bad place. Basic but very convenient. ”
Stayed for 2 nights. When I walked into the room I was a bit concerned. Looked dated but it proved to be clean, the ac worked and hot water worked. Cable was basic and amenities too but I was a little off the tourist path. I'd go again if only to visit Camaguey.

“Beautiful Hotel in the center ”
Gran Hotel was the most atmospheric hotel we stayed during our 2 weeks in Cuba. It really has a unique feel. The rooms are high ceiling with nice floors and furniture, clean and nice bathrooms and it's right in the centre with in walking distance of most of the things to see in Camaguey. The only downside is that we had a room overlooking the entrance of the hotel on the pedestrianised road and on a Saturday night that we were staying over was too noisy for us...

      “Hotel with a Spirit ”
During our 11 days long Cuban trip, this hotel was by far the best that matched my expectations: all over the place, you can feel the past, you can feel the Cuban spirit. The room we stayed in was spacious, very confortable, very clean, with a modern TV and all other amenities you might need in a hotel room and yet offering a very authentic experience in terms of its decoration and architecture. I loved especially tiles on the floor and the large windows. Lobby is impressive in terms of its decoration, so is the dining hall at 5th floor. The roof bar offers a unique view of the city. Taking the antique elevator makes you feel as if you are in a time travel machine. The courtyard of the hotel is a great spot to have drinks. The small swimming pool stages water ballet performances at night time (tough not very impressive). The entrance to the hotel is currently from the back side as there is a pedestrian street construction in front of the hotel currently, so your first impression is not that high when you first step in to the hotel but once you reach the courtyard and the lobby, that disappointment turns into a nice surprise. The only downside to me were the meals: all the food served in the open buffet both at dinner and at breakfast were Cuban and by that time in our trip, I had not yet accustomed to Cuban cuisine and I really had difficulty in finding something to eat.... But other than this personal flaw, I can easily say it was the best hotel we stayed in in Cuba....

“This once splendid hotel still retains it's charm ”
This hotel was recommended by the Lonely Planet so we headed there in our hire car. The many one-way streets of Camaguey made it difficult to find and we were grateful to have the help of a local on a bike to show us the way (for a small gratuity). The hotel itself is on a one-way street and our vehicle had to be parked in a car park some distance away for a daily fee. The spacious hotel lobby was once splendid and still looks very nice with it's old- fashioned furniture. Lifts were installed and working, and rooms were set around an atrium on various levels. Our room was small but clean and the bathroom was good. There was a beautiful couryard and small outdoor pool which was very popular for swimming and snacks and drinks. There is also a large bar on th ground floor We did see the rooftop bar but it was not open while we were there - it has a great view of the city. The dining room on the top floor is spacious and dignified with it's good quality furniture and great views of the city. Food was fairly bland as it was in most Cuban hotels! The buffet breakfasts were good with eggs cooked in various ways as well as fruit. We loved the live music in the restaurant, best we had heard in Cuba and bought one of their CD's which we continue to enjoy at home. A downside of our stay was all the people in the street who wanted money or to sell us something - a tour, a meal, a cigar etc. Overall, our three days in this once splendid hotel was very pleasant.

“Beautiful old hotel in beautiful Camaguey!”
July 2012 Our trip did not originally include a 24 hr layover in Camaguey! After a week at an all inclusive on Playa Santa Lucia, we were waiting and waiting at the airport in Camaguey to go home - however there were mechanical problems with the plane, and to make a long story short, all of the passengers were bused to a number of different locations to spend what was left of the night and the next day. My friends, husband and myself really lucked out! We ended up at the Grand (Gran) Hotel in the centre of Camaguey city! It was fantastic - the hotel is lovely, Spanish architecture - high, high ceilings and it is built around a fabulous centre courtyard!! The restaurant (good food!) was on the 5th floor and there was a rooftop bar/garden with a great view of the city! Our rooms were small but lovely - AC worked really well, and bathrooms were perfect! The street the hotel is located on is open only to pedestrians, and it is beautifully tiled! Lots of different kinds of shops and bars, not to mention at least 5 really lovely old churches within a block or two of the hotel! All in all it was a great adventure - beautiful city (I knew nothing of Camaguey prior), really, really lovely people - it was a perfect end to our holiday! Would I visit Camaguey again? Absolutely!

Me and my girlfriend really enjoyed this hotel. Checkin was quick, rooms are very spacious, water pressure was great and the bed was excellent. Breakfast on the 5th floor was excellent. The pool is a bit small but acceptable, prices in all area f&b outlets in the hotel are excellent. they don't take advantage like other hotels do. Would definitely return to this hotel when visiting Camaguey, the best hotel in the city centre.

      fine
In the historic center of the city of tinajones -large earthenware jars- stands this refined, sober hotel built in 1939. It is a colonial-style building combining woodwork with delicate decoration, appealing rooms and good services as the main attributes of this obligatory reference facility in Camagüey. Centrally located, it allows visitors to see sites of great historic interest in the city, in the least possible time.
