Rating Jumagua
The municipality of Sagua la Grande features a small jewel of the National System of protected areas called "Jumagua Mogotes", enclosing an area of Ă¢â‚¬â€¹Ă¢â‚¬â€¹362 hectares, beautiful landscapes, formed by hillocks and vegetation formations in good condition. The Jumagua Mogotes geomorphological are the only of its kind located in the Midwest. On the other hand, forests represent the last bastion of natural vegetation in the region of Sagua la Grande, which has been transformed due to the presence of agricultural soils and human activity on them.
The landscape that makes up the protected area includes a wetland, which is located in the area of Ă¢â‚¬â€¹Ă¢â‚¬â€¹semi-deciduous forest, which manifests physical-geographical characteristics of a swamp. The proximity between the hummocks and the wetland has enabled the establishment of independent relationships between ecosystems, and natural flora, it is essential for migratory birds that cross the site. The area has great values Ă¢â‚¬â€¹Ă¢â‚¬â€¹floristic, faunal, archaeological, paleontological and historical. The natural vegetation is composed basically by microphyllous deciduous forests, grassland and swamp vegetation hummocks, is undoubtedly the most interesting is the presence of two local endemic species restricted to the northern sector of the central part of the territory, the Tabebuia saxicola and palm Thrinax ekmaniana of great beauty, considered among the endangered species.
The local endemism also occurs in the fauna. The caves associated with hummocks represent the only known locality for three jumaguensis Cochlodinella molluscs, and Terrecoptis Torrecoptis mameyensis pallidula jumaguensis. In general, wildlife is abundant and varied. Striking among the birds that inhabit the area, the Parakeet (Aratinga USLE) very rare species today and here found adequate shelter. You can see also 14 of our 22 species of endemic birds. It also reported 12 species of Reptiles, Amphibians and 4 of Mammals 18.
The values Ă¢â‚¬â€¹Ă¢â‚¬â€¹paleontological, archaeological and historical sites are linked primarily to the Water Cave, located southeast of the hummocks where fossils have been found remains of several species of extinct Cuban fauna and especially detected known belonging to a species Megalocnos rodens of JutĂa and another of Tortuga. In the same cave burial remains have been found of the Indians who inhabited the area. Centuries after runaway slaves escaping from the mills that were abundant in the region settled in the cave where they established their arena. The Water Cave was also field hospital and camping site of the liberating forces of our wars of independence, operating in the region. Finally served as a refuge for some rebels who were victims of the repression unleashed by the Batista dictatorship after the strike of April 9, which was in the city of Sagua la Grande, one of the main centers of action in the country.
These values Ă¢â‚¬â€¹Ă¢â‚¬â€¹begin to be of public use through appropriate interpretive program that prioritizes conservation, allowing this wonderful natural scenery can be admired by people from generation to generation through environmental education activities that develop in the municipality, and the performance of perspectival tourism projects.
