      Varadero Airport

Juan Gualberto Gomez Airport was built in 1989 and inaugurated by Fidel Castro,[3] thus replacing the old Varadero airport located in Santa Marta, currently known as Kawama Airport. The airport was named after a journalist, fighter for the Cuban Independence and black rights activist in Cuba Juan Gualberto Gómez (1854–1933). The terminal building has shops for tourists (including rum, cigars, T-shirts, books, carvings, pharmaceuticals), a large departures lounge cafeterias and a VIP lounge. A VIP card is available by paying $30/person to the local tour company representative. This allows the departing passenger to bypass the queues for check-in, have an agent take your departure tax to the correct official for you, and bypass any lines for passport control. The passenger is then taken to the VIP lounge which provides free food and drink (including alcoholic beverages).[4] The ground handling equipment is imported mainly from North America. There are four jet bridges, but air stairs are used for the remaining aircraft parking spaces on the apron by the terminal. Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport (IATA: VRA, ICAO: MUVR), formerly known as Varadero Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto de Varadero), is an international airport serving Varadero, Cuba and the province of Matanzas. The airport is located closer to the city of Matanzas than to Varadero. The closest airport to Varadero is Kawama Airport. In 2009, the airport handled 1.28 million passengers,[2] making it the second busiest airport in Cuba after José Martí International Airport in Havana.

        “Worst Experience. ”
The Resort is beautiful and the beach was amazing, but the staff at this Resort is TERRIBLE. So terrible that my husband and I will never go back to this Resort. The bartenders and most of the wait staff were very friendly and did go out of their way to make our time there fun but the front desk and housekeepers were the most rude / ignorant people we have EVER had to deal with. This trip was our Honeymoon so We paid extra for the Superior Junior Suite Ocean view room. We were supposed to get the beach towels in our room, but the housekeeper never put them in there, The front desk and the towel hut guy REFUSED to give us towels. After arguing with the front desk for hours we finally gave up (We went the whole week with no beach towels!) Our room had a coffee pot and coffee cups but NO COFFEE?? The housekeeper NEVER refilled our mini fridge or water, we even left her a note (in her language) with an extra couple of dollars on top of what we were already giving her for a tip to remind her to put a couple of beers or even WATER in our room, she took the money but never replenished anything. We phoned down to the front desk to let them know and NOTHING was done about it. Thankfully the waiter at the buffet was awesome and gave us bottled water to take to our room. But the worst part of the entire trip was the day we had to check out. Since it was our honeymoon we were told when we checked in AND from our Sunwing Rep that our check out time was 4:00 PM. By the time we got down to the front desk to check out it was 4:30 PM (Yes we understood we were late) The 2 front desk ladies that were working tried telling us that we were supposed to be checked out at 3:00 PM and that we were going to have to pay 8 pesos, We tried to explain to her that we were told 4 o'clock was our check out time and she called us LIARS ( I couldn't believe it) she was shaking her head at us and wouldn't even let us speak, so after arguing with them and getting nowhere we said FINE to paying the 8 pesos and as I'm about to hand her the money, she tries to tell us that we were never booked in as Honeymooners and that we were actually supposed to be checked out at noon. She wanted us to pay more money, when we refused she threatened us and told us she was going to call Security, so my husband told her to go right ahead and call them so she DID. We stood there for about 10 - 15 minutes waiting for security, then finally we said enough is enough, I put the 8 pesos on the desk told them that the 8 pesos is all that we are paying and that when security gets here to find us at the bar. Thankfully the security never showed up. My husband and I saved for this trip, we looked forward to this trip for months and we got treated like dirt at this Resort. We will absolutely go back to Cuba, but will never stay at this Resort. Worst experience ever.

        “Not what I expected.... ”
This is my second visit to Cuba after many years and a lot has changed. This 4.5 star rated property is 3 at very best. There was only 1 elevator in service, the place is in need of major repairs. We were first given a room on the ground floor. We were like the first occupants in a long time - it was musty, damp, the doors and ceilings were damaged from a previous storm. In short very depressing. We paid the 20CUC for the upgrade to the 5th floor which was a littlte better. We observed a staff member fish out a cover from the juice dispenser with his bare hands on our first morning - no more fruit juice for us. The maid entered our room without knocking and did not have much of an excuse since the room had already been cleaned. Some food was under-cooked. The rest of the staff were pleasant, the entertainment average. My previous stay at a Melia resort was quite different.

“Cuba Si , Cuba no ”
The Hotel had it's anniversary party during our stay. Quite a good all day event. The bad news is that the hotel is now 16 years old and in some disrepair. They have a good location and beach but the buildings need some work. There are some staff that needs to move on and make way for a younger , harder working generation. Not sure what the staff with "lifeguard" on their shirts do besides sell knock off cigars. Food at the grill stations was pretty good but you had to control how much salt and oil they put on the fish /meats and keep an eye on the rareness of your meal. The cooks get pre occupied very easily. Remember every Friday night is Lobster night so no need to book the specialty restaurants that night. Don't be intimidated by the no tip no service attitude at this resort. It's your holiday and remind them of that . Management is glad to be informed of any shoddy staff. It is a very Cuban feeling resort nothing flashy , enjoy.

“Great beautiful beach, pool, garden, other items not so great. ”
First let me say i love the Varadero beach resorts. Varadero is close to airport,no long bus ride.I have been back 10 times. If you want a perfect beach, sun and sand, this is it. I got off on the wrong foot with this resort-Nov.6 t0 13. I asked fpr a quiet room ,when i arrived. My room over loooked the ventilation fans for the resort and a service area. Nexy day I was shown three alternative rooms ,one 2 stories below original room, one without a safe. After many visits to front desk i was given a very nice second floor room in in 3 story Module 62. Beware the rooms have two floor levels so walk carefully. I liked module room, garden view it was quiet, could not hear neighbours when air conditioning was on. The air conditioning failed twice for part of two days and the hot water was cut of for part of a day due to repairs. Grounds are mature with Palm and Banana trees.Pool is large and it was easy to get a soft lounger easier than other resorts. There is a salt water eco pond system with all sorts of tropical fish and two small sharks which could be viewed from the many small bridges. Sunwing representative was helpful with initial complaints and got me specialty restaurant passes. I usually went to eat in the buffet restaurant which had a lot of variety of overcooked vegetables, casseroles, sliced deli meats, cold salads, cheese table, bread selection and some desserts. Egg omlet grill was popular.Serving staff put forth varying effort, some friendly.Tips help. I found the fish grill station best with several types of fish to cook, shrimp, clams, octopi.. This is Cuba some food is sort of mass institutional. Know what foods make you sick, and aoid them if too cold or hanging around. Plates should be washed better and sanitaty dried before being brought to serving areas. There is a chicken, beef, sausage, hamburger, bar-be que grill just outside the buffet. I found the beef tough. Friday was lobster grill night . Lobsters were small, you could have as much as you wanted. but grill was popular. I only went to Italian theme restaurant. Presentation ,decor, staff, was high quality compared to buffet,BUT I ordered a Calzon type pizza. Very disapointing as the bottom crust was black and ham filling was almost none existant.Nice decor ,but food same as Buffet. I liked beach best. I never had trouble gettintg a lounger-Tips help. I was able to watch fishermen hand cast nets in the surf to catch many fish. Beach was uncrowded and large. One of thris reorts best features. I enjoyed talking to the resorts many guests. Many fellow Canadians, large contingent of Germans and some Eastern Euorpeans. You will enjoy the Melia Antillas enterainment in the piano bar- needs more musicans on a regular basis. The out door lounge off the lobby bar, was popular day and night with spirited small bands and vocal groups. Nightly entertainment in the outdoor theatre was sort of Glee meets high school musical type of Revu presentations-Broadway,Latin Night, etc. The dancers work hard . There was a Cuba Carnival Day with colourful dancers, bands, on the lawn areas and a feast featuring roast suckling pig!! If you want a superior beach focused adult resort this is it. Beach is easily walked, passing many surrounding resorts. Good cappuccino coffee.

        “Cuban experience. ”
Great if your looking for a Cuban experience. As a hotel mgr back home I could see my laziest and most useless staff become the employee of the month here. The staff are no different from the roaming cats in the restaurant looking for tips. Adult only means if your retired and over wait. Yes there are better resorts- hint they're the ones that cost more. A note to dir Fransesco, remind your staff who's vacation it is. Most of us saved for this trip only to see staff openly eating and drinking or selling counterfeit cigars. When they talk amongst themselves it seems like they are having loud arguments. Cook Ruis is a bad cook on top of being rude. Much like the old angry beach boy that works for you.

“Last New Years Eve at MLA”
I'm writing very late, but to follow up on my visit last year, unless you are very picky(don't go to Cuba!)this resort is what I expected, nothing short of excellent, the staff, food(Buffet and pool restaurant was so good and varied that I didn't try any of the a la carte restos)was better than what I had seen before in Cuba, clean, fun, the only thing is that it is a bit fare from the pueblo, but a short cab ride away... Relaxing show after at night on the Lobby terrace, dancing or magic show near the pool area, entertainment on the beach(and what A beach site, WOW!!!) and pool... Good for singles, couples and solo travelers...mingle and meet people, it is also about you!! Will go back for sure, soon enough, maybe even this New year again(just for the seafood diner that night almost worth the trip on it own!)... ;-)

        “Fantastic holiday ”
A friend and I have just returned from a week at the Melia Las Antillas and we had a great time. Beautiful beach and grounds, and there were plenty of shaded chairs on the beach and by the pool, and even hammocks under the palm trees. I appreciated the security guards on the beach and we felt safe leaving our things while we swam or went for a sail or kayak. We had a quiet, ground-floor bungalow room away from the main building but an easy walk to everything. Our room was large, clean and comfortable, despite a few glitches (it originally smelled very musty until we ran the A/C for a while, our toilet didn't work and we had to ask for bottled water, but the front desk was good when we called about these things). The food was very good, with lots of variety (although we kept going back for the fresh omelets and delicious croissants at breakfast). We'd heard the stories about Cuban resort food and were pleasantly surprised. This is not a 24-hour-party hotel, which we greatly appreciated. It was peaceful and laid-back, with a slightly older clientele (and 16+). There were also a lot of organized activities if you wanted to be more active, such as yoga on the beach, dance lessons, water polo, volleyball, games, etc., but no pressure to participate if you just wanted to relax. There were also fun surprises like a Carnival parade through the lobby. In fact, we were originally thinking of taking three day-trips during our stay, but we were enjoying the resort so much that we ended up only going on one (Havana Special). The entertainment in general was a highlight. The resident musicians were fantastic, and we loved listening to the Cuban band on the patio by the Mohito bar in the evening. The nightly shows at the outdoor stage were entertaining and varied. We saw some impressive dancing and water ballet. Most of the staff members were friendly and attentive, and we were well taken care of --from the servers in the Taino buffet and La Conuco restaurant to the bartenders (particularly the beach and Mohito bars) and even the quiet gardener who gave me a hibiscus flower on our first morning. Although I went with a friend, as a single woman I?d also feel comfortable staying there alone. I must say a special thank-you to the thoughtful and dedicated Yuniel Arencibia, Master of Ceremonies, fountain of knowledge, and all-around fun cheerleader. He got us up on the dance floor, was concerned that I stayed clear of food I was allergic to, and introduced me to the DJ so I could learn more about Cuban music. Yuniel made our visit especially fun, and by the end of our stay it felt like we were saying goodbye to an old friend. I'm currently listening to a CD of the resort's house band and both my friend and I are looking forward to our next visit.
