“Boring food, Missing basic food, Great People”
We go to Cuba for the people. The people did not disappoint. I can not think of a single individual who did not do their very best to make us feel welcome. From the maid who cleaned our room well and wrote lovely thankyou notes to our gifts, to the lovely morning girls who kept my coffee cup full, to the smiling quick lunch and dinner staff (one in particular made a point to get our name and greet us by our name every time thereafter) to the gentleman manning the grill station at breakfast, lunch or dinner, to the bartender at the pool bar who played with my husbands beer cup, puffing out the excess foam at his fellow bartenders, to the gardeners who gave us fresh cut flowers for our room, or little grasshoppers made from palm tree leaf. They made the holiday! The room was lovely, one more drawer to put clothes in would have been appreciated, but otherwise I find no fault. There was always fresh towels (usually arranged into a swan), the shower and bathtub would deliver a steady stream of warm water as the water was set at a certain temperature. We were on the third floor and I loved sitting on our balcony from about 4:00 to dinner as the sun would be shining directly, as if directed to suit us! Now for the food. No tomatoes except for one day, the oddest combinations of foods were made into salads for the salad bar, no meat sauce option for the pasta station, ( I don't mean thick with meat, just the weak meat option usually available), no chicken served without sauce all over it, weak options for vegetables, both cold or warm, ( cold brussell sprouts were served almost every day?) I didn't starve, I got food, but I was really bored, and never looked forward to a meal. We went to two a la cartes, both actually were pretty good, not great, but okay. Heard the Italian was bad so skipped that one. We were there for two weeks, and I would almost swear that the there was a management change half way through! No lobster the first week, lobster once on the second week along with fruit cups and desert served at beach and pool mid morning and mid day, special Cuban meal served at lunch, special paella served on the beach, lottery of gifts on beach. Would I recommend this resort, probably if the price was right, but this is the second Iberostar I have stayed at that the food was blah, so I think I will avoid an Iberostar in Cuba the next time.

    “a bumpy ride ”
Stayed from Nov.9-16. The weather was ideal, balmy, not too hot, with an occasional shower. The Alameda in the hotel's name means a tree-lined boulevard. Such is the hotel's graceful main thoroughfare which leads from the lobby almost to the sea. The adult swimming pool on the left, also nicely landscaped, has sparkling clean water, but seems underused, perhaps because it is so shallow. The beach is fine -- the Atlantic stretches for miles at Varadero offering white sand and warm safe water for bathing. The hotel provides sufficient lounge chairs and palapas and has a beachfront bar. Iberostar also offers guests a mechanized cart bearing fresh coconuts, which are opened with a machete and given with a straw, and rum if desire. No charge .Erosion has recently taken its toll on the beach, eating away sand. You must reach the water by descending the shelf between the upper and lower levels.A restaurant-grill is located just behind the beach. Its gloomy spaces, inside and out, are uninviting; no wonder few guests use it. It cries out for a total redesign, opening it out to the sea, as well as offering a new menu with freshly grilled whole fish, chicken. and freshly baked pizza. The main buffet restaurant provides a wide selection of healthy, simply prepared foods. The staff is well motivated, friendly, and hardworking, as are the other hotel workers, with a few exceptions. The emphasis is on sea food, fresh vegetables, and fresh fruits. The pasta section, with its limited but tasty options, is popular. Lobster lovers will get it in unlimited quantities at one evening meal. The bottled llquors and wines are of excellent quality. We recommend the nostalgic little Bar Santiago and the Lobby Bar. The expresso coffee, widely available, is the best we have had in Cuban hotels.Of the three specialty restaurants we tried only the Italian one. That was enough. After a nice selection of antipasto, one moves on to a main course distinguished by quantity over quality. My veal milanese, a lightly breaded cutlet that should be deftly browned in olive oil, arrived smothered in a thick unappetizing coating and deep-fried in old grease. This delicacy is identified in the English version of the menu as "scallops" (yes, as in the shellfish). Do not expect to hear really good live Cuban music here. The group that plays outside in the early evening is attuned to audience participation, as is the show that begins at 9:45 pm. If you like this kind of standardized production, you will enjoy the performers' skilled expertise. Now for the bumps (los baches en espanol). Having arrived at around midnight at the hotel, we were given room 1026, a two minute walk from the lobby. Good location? Think again. One bed was lacking a bottom sheet. My call to the desk, answered by the same employee who brought us to the room, brought no result. The next day, the maid, after initially expressing incredulity, admitted responsibility and brought a sheet. It quickly became clear that our bathroom had no hot water. Over time, lukewarm water appeared for 2 hours during the afternoon. Rest assured: any concerns that you may want express to the management will fall on deaf ears. I didn't bother to report the cockroach I killed in our bathroom one night. Our "patio" was unusable except to dry wet bathing suits on the solitary chair provided there. Its space was the public lawn, used a repository for garbage bags by the maid; a small pool of dirty water in a stone receptacle was also close by. A large plate left on the grass near our room was removed after three days. The room had a coffee maker bur we never saw a single grain of coffee; the "free" room safe was j'en passe. The hotel manager was conspicuous by his absence -- was he the youngish guy in the blue shirt who gave a pep session to the restaurant workers before the lunch opening (usually late) at 1 pm and who then evaporated? Our brief is not with the employees who deserve ample praise; in fact some are clearly pushed to the limit by management .A final note: the female restaurant workers are obliged to wear a faux ethnic minibottom that is grossly unflattering; the men wear nicely designed short sleeved shirts and dark slacks. Sexist?

    “Slightly exceeded our expectations ”
Hotel and room were clean. Had the same maid for 6 out of 7 days, she was awesome! (Dorima) :-) Day 7 was a new staff member, only 1 towel in the room. Informed the front desk, they called someone- end result - still the same, 1 towel between the 2 of us. Staff we're very friendly, and for the most part, very accommodating. The beach was great to walk, goes for kilometres, no hassles from anyone. Had the romantic room, partial ocean view, very satisfied with location, only heard the ocean at night. The bed was hard, room for improvement. Buffet was better than I expected, did not have any food related issues. Al acarts - okay Did not use the pool or spa facilities.

    “Excelente ! ”
I travelled with my 80 year young mother to this resort for the 3rd time. I wrote ahead to ask for a room close to the pool and buffet so she could easily get around. When we arrived our perfect room was ready with a lovely note and bottle of rum already provided. Each day our room a delight to return to. Our maids decorated with the towels, the comforters, even the blankets to create a different welcoming. Our mini bar was stocked every 2nd day. The gardener, Raoul, picked flowers for us daily. There was a special reception for people who had stayed at the resort previously. There we drank champagne, ate appetizers and met all the "first bosses" : for entertainment (Alexis), guest services (Ariel), etc. To them, I express my deep appreciation. Your efforts are appreciated and your staff works hard. Congratulations on having such a dedicated team! This year I asked different staff to write their names for me so I had the correct spelling to mention them in Trip Advisor: Adianis, Yurisan, Yaciel, Vieja, Yudiaris, Madelene, Beatrice, Edgar, thank you for making me and my mother feel like queens. The service was perfect; the entertainment superb, the food good. Eduardo cooks eggs like no other. Each night there was a grill -- fish, beef, shrimp; the pasta bar extensive. Following dinner, there was live music and dancing and a different show at the theatre. I partook in a very relaxing massage at the beautiful spa/fitness centre. The pool has been replaced and is cleaned regularly. I swam every time I could when the ocean was calm and the beach was not too windy. We were never bored and my face has a permanent smile. I look forward to my return.

    “Amazing Staff ”
Had a blast again, the staff was amazing, the hotel was clean and the food had improved from the last time! Definitely worth going back too, can't wait to plan our next one!! The excursions are a little pricey, but well with it. The catermeran was the best one of them all for me.

“Amazing Experience at Playa Alameda ”
We just got back from a 7 day stay at the Iberostar Playa Alameda and it was simply AMAZING!! The staff there are so helpful and SO kind, the room was nice. We had the king size room with the balcony and it was so beautiful. The only thing wrong is that the food was OKAY; my fiancé got sick the 2nd day from eating something there that didn't agree with his stomach (just diarrhea thank god). YURISAN and PAELLO ARE AMAZING; great service and very hilarious. We gave Paello a blue jay hat and he was so happy!! Everyone there is so kind and so generous and it really makes your stay that much better. I recommend going on the Jeep Safari excursion!!! IT was AWESOME!! Definitely great value for your dollars. Go on the double decker Varadero Beach Tour bus as well, but be careful of the trees that smash into you when your sitting on the top haha. Overall great trip, great people, beautiful beach, OK food, met some great people that have turned into friends and definitely recommend it to anyone that wants to go to Cuba!!!

“Second time was even better than the first time. ”
Last year I went in December for my birthday and had a blast. Did the trip to Veradero and swam with the dolphins and the beach was amazing and the staff were great. So this year I couldn't wait to go back and this time even better. Took the tour to Havanna a little disappointed with all the begging from the locals that seem to swarm the tour buses so next time will be prepared for that also went skydiving and that was a 20 out of 10 and I got the video to prove it lol. As for the staff and workers in the resort they were curtious, friendly and always asked if there was anything else they could do for me. I have been going to Cuba for the past five years and have changed resorts over little issuses but can't wait to go back to this one.

    Magic Iberostar Playa Alameda
We had originally booked our wedding for May 15th in the Mayan Riviera. 10 days before we were booked to leave with our group of 27 the swine flu hit. This changed everything, we were unable to go to Mexico due to flight cancellations so it was a mad scramble to make our wedding work out. Our travel agent at Marlin Travel was amazing. she managed to get us all booked in Cuba within 2 days no problem. We contacted the wedding coordinator in Cuba and managed to throw together a last minute wedding. I will admit i was heartbroken, i had been planning our wedding for over a year and it went down the tubes overnight. Our big day in Cuba wasn't what i originally planned but it was beyond my dreams and i wouldn't change it for the world. I think it was so wonderful because we were literally flying by the seat of our pants with zero plans and that may be why it turned out so wonderfully. We had Imilze (not sure of the spelling) she was the wedding coordinator. Her english is very rough but we managed with much gesturing and photos i brought with me to make our wedding vision come to life. All the staff went out of their way to accomodate us including a wedding rehearsal night at the outdoor Cuban BBQ buffet. they set a huge table up for us and let us in first. the music was wonderful, the food at the BBQ fantastic. Another thing to think about was our cost savings, we saved about $5000 going to Cuba. a big savings in the end so just a thought if you keep it simple. The beach was gorgeous so saving money and getting married on a gorgeous beach is a double bonus!

    Iberostar Playa Alameda
We just got back from a 10-day vacation at the Iberostar Playa Alameda Varadero . We had a great time. The staff is very attentive. Buffet offers a variety of food options. The rooms are spacious with closets, safes, and minibar. Beautiful beach with lounge chairs and shade umbrellas. Three restaurants, all of them specializing in different cuisines and all good. Many snack bars. Small, two-floor buildings. The hotel is located in the middle of a beautiful garden/park with lots of trees and really clean. They have shows at night.

One of the best Iberostar Playa Alameda
This was one of the best trips in the world. Our family has 7 people in it but only three people went thats how we could afford it even tough it is a bit price was high it was worth every single penny and more it is seriously like you are in paradise you get everything you want free of all kind of foods for dinner you can go 3 times and there are 4 restaurants i think you can go swimming with the dolphins, jeep safari is a great one, one thing i will warn you about is tips bring aside about 100-200 dollars if you want to give tips if you do not they will serve you last and not really like you or if you would like you can give than about 20 for the whole time you stay unless it is more than 10 days you also will want to bring money if you want to go swimming with dolphins snorkeling, and much more anyways if you need a break or just wanna get away playa alameda is amazing!

    Very Nice Iberostar Playa Alameda
This was the most amazing experience i have ever had at a hotel or resort. I felt like the employees were my friends and were truly looking out for my best interests. I felt completely safe and taken care of during my entire stay. I would like to recommend the animation team to everyone. They are amazing and provided great entertainment during my stay. I can't speak highly enough about them. The service, people & hotel are ***** for me. I have told my friends and family to make sure when they go to Cuba to stay with you. I can't imagine ever staying anywhere else, and I will be back. Thank you very much for such a great experience.
