“Not just BAD. This place is DISGUSTING ”
I stayed at this Hotel for one night during a tour of east central Cuba. To describe the place as a ?Hotel? is in itself misleading. This place is no better than what I would imagine as being a doss house for the poor and needy. Certainly not a place chose to stay at when on holiday. The bedroom was dingy, in need of decorating with tired and worn out furniture. The bath had several rust holes in its base making it imposable to use . Water would just run out. My friends in the room next door were shocked to see frogs in their bath. At least their bath could hold water !! The plug for the wash hand basin should best be described as a joke. How it worked I will never know. Perhaps by Devine intervention. Electrical installations were loose with wires exposed. Light bulbs were missing or not working. They like to keep the room dim. It looks better that way!! The swimming pool was dirty looking and frankly I thought that anyone using it would probably catch something and end up in hospital. The evening meal was very poor and just not up to standard. It was just about edible. Having regard to the fact that there is nowhere else nearby to eat we had to put up with it. Breakfast was no better and only served to prove a fact that if you are hungry and the there is nowhere else to go then you will eat what you are given. This does not mean that the food is enjoyable. Our stay here was part of a tour organised for us by Virgin Holidays who really have tarnished their otherwise good reputation by placing clients in this most horrid of places.

        “Hotel from Hell!! ”
Arrived around 6pm, food already on display, not good with flies around. Swimming pool was very cloudy and not at all a good colour - certainly not for me. Bathroom door handle came off as I went to close the door, as did my nextdoor neighbours. One of the men had a severe electric shock when he went to turn a switch on over his bed. I disturbed one of the porters in my room, after returning from a short walk before breakfast. When we reached our next destination nine people realised they had been robbed. We had been previously warned about this place. Obviously the porters/security were well organised. No one lost all their money, hence it wasn't noticed immediately.

        “What a dump!! ”
Avoid this place at all costs. We stayed here for one night as part of a tour and I'll be writing to the tour op to make sure they get a rep to do a site visit pronto. Our room smelt horrible - a mixture of damp and dirt. The bathroom was disgusting - mouldy ceiling tiles and hadn't been cleaned properly - I didn't want to walk on the floor in my bare feet. We were only provided with 2 hand towels and no bath towels. The shower couldn't get a decent temp - either freezing cold or boiling hot. And when we got up the following morning there was no water at all - couldn't even flush the loo. The 'optional' dinner (lets face it - this place is in the middle of nowhere so exactly where else can you go?) was very poor. Breakfast equally as poor. One nice this to say is that the setting is very pretty but honestly that's all this place has going for it. It's tired, old and run down and the staff don't give a hoot. Don't stay here.

        “Never Again ”
Stayed here for one night on the 'Highlights of Cuba' Tour with First Choice. The hotel looks nice from the outside, in the Countryside with two story bungalows spread out over a small complex. On arrival we got to our room and practically had to bash the door in as it was jamming on the floor. The room was very basic and dull. We were informed that the maids sometimes leave the patio doors unlocked so check they were secure on arrival. I pulled back the curtains to have a huge swarm of mosquitoes fly out of the curtain and a lizard start running around. The mozzies were of the most concern, nobody wants to spend the rest of their holiday covered in bites. The air con, shower , hairdryer, and fridge worked OK, but there were holes in the bathroom ceiling and we just could not get rid of the mozzies, we sprayed everything were had but they were not detered and spent a very uncomfortable night in that room. The buffett dinner was a joke, 10 pesos each for bland unedible rubbish that was covered in flys. Apparently the main dining room was being refurbished and we were next to the pool area instead. The staff were surley and I barely ate a thing for dinner or breakfast, being put off by the flys. I know it was only one night but I was seriously relieved to leave the hotel and the chickens at the front door of our room behind.

        “Nice surroundings but neglected ”
Unlike some of the other reviewers, I got a decent room although it hadn't been used in a while because the water faucet made a lot of noise as it expelled trapped air and the water coming out was dirty. After all of the dirty water came out it was fine. When I checked in, the person at the front desk explained that most of the rooms hadn't been used in quite a long time. The room was clean and the beds were comfortable. The breakfast was on the limited side but it was adequate. I stayed 2 nights and on the first night they had set up a buffet for the evening meal due to the presence of a tour group, definitely overcharged at 12 CUC. The second night there weren't any tours present so I had a pretty decent fish dinner at a reasonable price. The staff was very accommodating but since, like everything else in Cuba, everything belongs to the state, there is no competition therefore the facilities are not kept up.

        “One night stand ”
only stayed one night, but that was enough. Staff friendly and helpful, but room poor (lack of maintenance) and doorframe and door badly fitting and cracked letting all the local bugs and beasties in. Used en route to Eastern Cuba and not so much choice of accommodation in the peak season. If you're staying here, don't have high expectations and then you won't be too disappionted. Even by Cuban standards, not good !

“One night is more than enough ”
We stayed here as part of a "Highlights of Cuba" tour with Thomson / First Choice. We were a party of 26. Believe me 1 night is plenty. The hotel is set in a pleasant semi-rural location, that's the good news. The rooms are basic, not been touched in years. The walls are paper thin so beware noisy neighbours. Our shower, over the bath was more like a hose pipe than shower and it looked like the head hadn't been cleaned/descaled for years. Some of our party had no hot water and some no electricity! There was an in room safe but we ket our valuables with us at all times. There is a very small bar, with one friendly and efficient barman struggling to cope and never received any help from other staff who were around. A small dining room which was full when we arrived for dinner. The buffet and breakfast were just about OK, we survived!. The show on the outside terrace was alright and passed an hour or so. The outside pool was definately not inviting - it needed a good clean but as most people are on overnight stays this was not a major problem. Overall definately not the best but just about OK for one night. Dottie

“Never let your money out of your sight ”
The accomodation is in 2 story villas made of poured concrete and is very basic although the location is quite pleasant.. The place is totally government run, is rather frayed around the edges and could do with some money spending on it. Rooms are a little small but generally clean. Everything worked in ours (511)and as we were only here 1 night we found it quite adequate. A week here would be a nightmare. The restaurant was smallish. Our group of 38 filled it and the food on offer was not terribly appealing or plentiful. We had £70 stolen from a locked key operated safe in a locked room so don't rely on the room safe for security. We were only away from the room for dinner & breakfast so it could only have been a staff member. They must watch for guests vacating their rooms at mealtimes and then only take some of your money to make early discovery less likely. It was 3 days before we realised and when we advised out tour director he confided that it had happened here several times before and that an employee was currently in prison for thefts from rooms. Lets hope he has company some time soon but until then if staying here carry your money with you at all times

Stayed here for 1 night as part of the Highlights of Cuba tour. It is a basic hotel which I can't imagine has changed much in the last 30 years. The location is lovely. The food leaves a little to be desired (as it does in much of rural Cuba). Having said that, the staff were friendly and the rooms were clean. We considered ourselves lucky that everything in our room seemed to work - others in our group had to contend with no electricity, no air conditioning (essential when it's 45C) and flooding toilets. We did have a shower which once started could not be stopped, but we were moved quickly so couldn't complain. We didn't get a chance to use the pool, but we did spot 2 trantulas in there at breakfast time. Wouldn't chose to stay here again, but for 1 night it was ok.

“Grim, possibly hazardous - redeemed by the excellent staff”
Stayed here as a member of a 38 person UK based tour group. The tour manager described the place as possibly having had a prior use as an R & R facility for Soviet armed forces personnel. As far as the facilities are concerned this proved to be an apt description. The facility is handicapped by a poor design and layout - general care and repair did not seem to have a high priority. Our room was in a 4 room 2 storey building in the grounds - this seems to be standard. The room was adequate and reasonably clean. The food (dinner and breakfast) was so so. The hotel staff really made every effort to offset the manifest problems of their hotel. Their efforts were recognised and praised by everyone in our group. The reception and bar staff are particularly worthy of praise. One of our party tripped and fell down the unlit stairs from her room. Required hospital treatment - a back injury necessitated 8 day stay at the hotel before being able to return to UK.

“One of the better options in Sancti Spiritus ”
Me and my wife stayed here back in February when returning from Camaguey, We decided to stay the night and leave the next day to Havana. I had stayed here once before, The property is divided up in many bungalows, some bungalows are two story, you are also able to drive right to your bungalow. Rooms are large , but yet very basic just like the majority of state owned properties in Cuba. The washroom did have hot water and pressure was good. The hotel pool was closed when I was their. The breakfast available in the main lobby was actually quite good. I will probably stay at this hotel as I frequently visit the area to visit family/friends from time to time...

        “Off the beaten track!”
We stayed here for one night as part of the 'Highlight of Cuba' tour. We were told that this was where communist party members used to come to spend their holidays and it does have a rather out-dated feel about it and it is generally a bit run down for example the pool didn't have any water and the reception area was like a building site, however on saying that the rooms were clean and comfortable with all the facitlities required for a single night's stay. The dinner buffet was reasonable value at 10CUC but as others have previously stated the abundance of flies was somewhat off putting. The salad starter and hot buffet was enjoyable but we decided not to chance the fruit or desserts as there were a number of flies and ants. Instead we had the ice-creas which was good. Breakfast was more than adequate. I wasn't really sure why First Choice took as to this particular hotel and I think it would be worthwhile removing from the tour completely.

“A little too rural for our liking ”
After our previous night's experience at the Rancho Luna, we were a little bit nervous about what to expect from Rancho Hatuey. This feeling didn't subside when we arrived there to find that we had no electricity in our room due to a power cut, and a dead frog lying by the patio doors! We made the best of the situation though and had showers in the dark before heading down to the main building for dinner. Luckily, this had its own generator, so we were able to have hot food in a fully lit room. The dining room was small, meaning that it was advisable to get there early and try and share tables if possible. The food was fine, not very exciting but perfectly edible, and the puddings were very good. Afterwards a group of us went for a drink in the even smaller bar. It decided to start raining at this point, so we were quite glad that we had managed to snaffle the only 2 indoor tables. By the time we went back to our room, the electricity was back on so the night passed uneventfully. The following morning, two of our group went for a swim and discovered a tarantula clinging to the pool steps, so we were quite glad to leave Rancho Hatuey after only one night!

We stayed for one night on our Cuba tour. The rooms were in two-storey bungalows and after Havana seemed light and airy. It's in the middle of nowhere and there were only our group there that night so we made our own entertainment. There is a swimming pool but watch out! There were three live 'tarantulas' in it the morning we went for a dip! The locals said they are not harmful but they certainly look the part. they live in holes in the ground so if you see a hole about an inch across it's probably a spider den. We also had several varieties of lizard and gecko on our balcony and in the room so you could say we saw a variety of local wildlife.

“Tranquil Mini-Resort on the edge of one of my favorite Cuban Cities ”
Although I reserved for three nights, since I fell in love with Sancti Spiritus, I stayed an extra night. Reading some earlier reviews, I wonder if we're talking about the same place? My stay was enjoyable! My accomodation, on the first floor of a two-story building, was more than adequate, with two double beds (for myself only), writing desk, bureau, closet, tv, wall-safe, and best of all, a bathroom with HOT water! All this at a ridiculously-low price (temporada baja, but even high season couldn't be much more). Enjoyed the hotel's swimming pool, and the pool-side bar, under whose shaded cannopied terrace I spent many hours reading and writing in my journal. The hotel itself, a collection of cottages and two-story buildings, carpeta, restaurant, two bars (one pool-side, one in the main bluiding), disco, swimming pool, is located on ni up a 1/2 km. access road off the Carretera Central, out near the airport. The staff were very helpful. After my first trip to town (a 2 1/2 km, $5 CUC via taxi) they told me how to get into town by public transport (the bus stop is a block away from their entrance, on the Carretera Central), and even gave me the change, in moneda nacional (CUPS), to take the bus, (which was 5 cents/$1 CUP, + an additional 5 cents/$1CUP to transfer to bus #7 to downtown). Breakfast was included, and each morning I had a plate of fresh fruit, fruit juice, eggs and coffee. Since I was there four nights, my room maid agreed to wash and iron dirty clothes before I left for Ciego de Avila. The staff, including the manager and all the folks on the front desk at the carpeta, were very knowledgable about what to see and do in Sancti Spiritus. I was able to practice my Spanish with them--and inflict it ON them--on many occasions. Although on the edge of town, once I learned the public transport system, this was no problem (especially at 10 cents round-trip). I hope to return here again, as I love their town!

        “Pleasant Rural Location ”
Our room 316 was in a small block a short walk from reception. The room was of moderate size, with not much storage for the cases. But I enjoyed sitting on the balcony watching the sun set over the long view down the valley and on this quiet rural location. The sound proofing between the rooms in our block was abysmal ! You could hear the tenants next door speaking, their comings and goings, doors slamming and particularly bathroom sounds. We soon learned to be careful what we did! We thought that the location for one night was very pleasant and restful. The reception area was small but had the usual facilities including a small bar with terrace. The staff were great and we enjoyed some music provided by local artistes. The food was suitably varied for the multinational array of guests. The restaurant was small, but it was easy to find a spare seat, and there wasn't much queing for food. The hotel provided a roasted pig as an option for the evening meal. For breakfast the restaurant was operating on Cuban time, i.e., opened late!. The hotel was several miles from the town Centre, but that didn't impinge on us, as we were touring there next day. All in all, it was a pleasant place to stay

We stayed for just one night at the Rancho Hatuey and loved it for its simplicity and charm. It is set some 5 miles from Sancti Spiritu in rural surroundings - even the fields were being ploughed the traditional way with oxen and plough share. The two storey apartments were clean and modern, set in picuresque grounds. The restaurant was very good with the usual buffet of good choice and standard. We did not have time to sample the swimming pool, but it looked nice and inviting. Our tour operators, Kuoni mad a good choice with this stopover on a tour of Cuba.
