“Not a good place to spend your vacation/ wedding!! ”
First off, I have to say that the level of service and attention was serious lacking. From the start it was a bad experience. My best friend had his destination wedding here, and there was a group of 23 of us total that stayed here in the beginning of October from Vancouver. My wife is pregnant and we have a 16 month old that was traveling with us also, we decided to pay the extra $ for a "seaview room" as opposed to the standard room as we know that we would probably be spending a fair bit of time in the room. As soon as we got our room, it was a pool view and not a seaview room. Because it was a wedding party and booking, we had pre-booked 6 months earlier. This is something that both Westjet Vacations and the hotel need to clarify when charging customers for a seaview room, that a pool view room is not a seaview room. We had 3 others in the group that had paid for the upgrade for the seaview and did not have a seaview. To make matters worse, our friends who paid for the standard room, was right next to us. So, we talked to the front desk for at least 30mins, to final escalate the issue to the "manager". She informed us that according to the hotel, that the room we were in was a seaview room. I told them then only way we could see the sea from our room, was to stick our head over the balcony and look far to the left to see it. I was ok to stay in the room, but demanded that they either refund me the amount or at least give me the price difference in a spa treatment for my wife. There's no arguing that was a seaview room when it clearly isn't. In the end, I decided to let things go, and just keep the room as I did not want to make things difficult for my buddy the groom. Service in the buffet dining area was not attentive at all. To our surprise the buffet for breakfast ends at 10:30am and the lunch buffet does not start until 1pm. So if you happen to have kids, wake up between those times, you are going have to go hungry for a bit. Not the best scenario with a pregnant wife. Although you can get burgers and hotdogs and fries at the snack bar by the pool, but you can only eat that for so many days. One particular server in the buffet area, who knew that we had a large party with kids, even told us to move tables as the one we sat down in was "reserved". We politely moved, and saw that he had just seated others in a smaller group. I guess he was looking for more tips and less work. We did complain to the manager, who informed us that there was no such thing as "reserved seating" in the buffet area, and that he would have a talk to that staff member. Food of course is not the greatest, but is expected in Cuba. I do have to compliment the one waiter we had at the Japanese restaurant as he was the most attentive and professional server we had all trip. He was the only one, to ask if our 16month year old, needed anything, when taking our order. Each time he came around to us, he would ask if our child needed anything, like water, etc. He would ensure everyone at our table got what they asked, and re-filled our drinks without being asked. Rooms, are the only place that has decent A/C. Because we has such a big group, we could compare all our rooms. Not one of our rooms was 100%. Either A/C didn't work in one room, or the outlets are out in another, or the sliding balcony door is broken, or sink was leaking, etc. etc. Not 1 room was without issues. The cleaning attendants were probably the best staff as they were the most appreciative and worked hard at their jobs. Although we few of us also had not so good maids. Overall, if you want my advice, and the consensus of our group. None of us will be going back to this hotel ever, and we would not recommended it our friends. That's a lost cause, and it's pretty much too late to try and "fix" things after the fact and after we had tried to address these issues at the hotel. My recommendation is to go to Iberostar Varadero instead. Under that same company, but a much better resort.

“Hated it! Some will give it five stars I think the clue is in the name ? (Iber) ?0? star! ”
I hated this place. We had no choice as it was the last hotel on a Bales/Virgin Taste of Cuba tour. Trust me, if you do not like any of the following points, then this place is probably not for you. BUT I must say a lot of people appeared to be very happy here. Perhaps I am too old, perhaps I am discerning, perhaps I am a snob, perhaps I am (not) normal, perhaps I just want to go home at time of writing as I have three hours to kill before the transfer gets me out of this place?. ? Massive ? 800 plus bedrooms ? 1500 punters ? A peninsula of tourist hotels - Benidorm without the finesse? ? Poor bedrooms at the back of the hotel with non-existent views ? Lack of communal space for drinks, or just simply to relax ? Watered down (my opinion) white wine, coffee, juice ? Industrial sized, ?Stalinesque? cafeteria where food quality does not factor. At one stage I had trouble seeing across the room it was that big. ? No ambience ? Drunken people of all nationalities trying to neck as much alcohol as possible ? Young ladies that moon ? not pleasant. I did not realise that an eclipse was due. ? No sign of Cuban history or culture except a little picture of Che ? Tattoo City ? I was one of the few without and felt left out ? Dark and dingy corridors to bedrooms, reminiscent of an Intourist State hotel in Moscow in 1988 ? despite the property being only a few years old ? Kids that run around and scream with no parental control Remember, my view only?. I am sure I must be a minority voice in a sea of happy people prepared to accept mediocrity ? or am I. Dare you take the risk?

    “2 couples 40th anniversary, group of 10”
Beautiful resort, but we will not go back, we were 2 couples celebrating our 40th anniversary, plus 2 more couples and 2 childrens, we stayed for 2 weeks, resort rundown for a 5year old, all our rooms had no lights in the bathrooms, in seating area, balcony door not working, many complaints, yes we will take care but for the 2 weeks nothing got done, very poor service, in the buffet, plates were not cleared , from our tables, only the Japanese restaurant was good, food in buffet same thing done different ways, their pasta was terrible, should have, less but quality,we have stayed in Cuba before and must say that they have been better ,one thing very important , the outdoor buffet was full of birds eating the food, birds flying on tables and chairs, dirty,we ate there once or twice, but it was so bad ,we never ate there again, sorry but it was very disappointing ,nothing special abaout our anniversary was done, 5th floor hot tub not working water cold, and all we got was a bottle or rum for the complains and apology, but the whole 2 weeks nothing was taken care , we slept with a balcony door broken not locking, I know Cuba is safe, but that is not the point, and last thing all their towels need replacing , old and dirty, with stains, as I said for 5year old resort needs a lot of upgrading to be a 5 star.

    “Mixed Feelings ”
I have mixed feelings about this resort. I feel it could have been a very good experience with a few changes Good -The Beach was absolutely fabulous. Long stretch of white sand and clear water. Good activities to do there as well such as Hobie Cat, Kayaking or like me just relaxing Bad - The washrooms are quite far from the beach and dont expect to be served on the beach, not that I did but a closer bathroom would have been appreciated. Good- The pools were great ( a number of them ) with a swim up bar- no bad there Good- Rooms were kept clean and well stocked everyday with 2 beers, 2 pops and a large water Bad- The rooms need updating. Both mine as my friends closet doors fell off, her safe didnt work at all and patio doors were a joke to open . Pillows need replacing and mold and mildew in bathroom Entertainment- Excellent! Nothing bad to say here. Thanks to Juan, Darryl and Bruno ! Food- Good-I think for Cuba standards that the food was good. Others found it not so much. Breakfast was excellent with great choices of omlettes, pancakes ( fresh) and a variety of prepared dishes such as bacon ( everyday) yogurt , fruit, cereal, sweet breads . Love their cappucino's. Bad- NOT ENOUGH PLATES! For this reason alone I wont be going back. They constantly ran out of plates and this wasnt high season . I had to wait around for a plate at most meals and a lot of times the plates were dirty . Unreasonably long lines up for stations . Need more staff to move things along . Drinks- Great-Nothing bad here, very very generous with alcohol . Anyone that complains is out of their mind lol . A la Carte -Good- All I can say is Japan is amazing!! The rest werent worth it Grounds- Good- Well kept Bad- Bathrooms need to be restocked. No toilet paper in almost all stalls( thank goodnessI carried kleenex and no soap at most times ) Spa/Gym- Good-Only used steam room and sauna which were great Bad- Hot tub was too cold and cleansiness needed to be improved overall in this area Front Desk - Good- Average at best but the worse thing - NEED TO BE ABLE TO PROVIDE CHANGE. I felt like it was a scam that they never ever had change so was I expected to tip $5 every time I ordered a drink. They resort should be able to provide change. Overall it was good in some ways but for what I paid ( a little high for Cuba) I expected a little more. Would choose another resort next time

    “Great Staff ”
Let me start out by saying the staff are excellent, from the front desk, bars, beach, restaurants. All are very pleasant and helpful. Our stay started with having to change rooms, as we were given 2 twin beds pushed together, a common try, not the king we requested. the ventilation system was extremely mouldy/musty as well. We changed rooms, and moved to building 20 (just off the beach, and quiet at night), and the best pool and bar staff (Ernesto). the resort didn't seem too well maintained as both our room and the room of another couple we traveled with had the same problems: bedside wall lamps loose, fan bent so badly it wanted to come off the ceiling, I fixed ours, light bulbs needing replacing, both in the room and in the hallways. Room staff are excellent. We were told not to expect much in the way of the food, and they were right. Its ok, you won't starve. They have a pasta bar and will grill chicken and fish to order a little tip here if you like ketchup, hot sauce (Franks) or peanut butter you better pack your own. Great expresso and cappuccino. You may also want to take a big thermal cup for your drinks, the small plastic cups they us are really small 6 ozs maybe. The beach is why we went and it was great. lots of chairs and palm leaf umbrellas. Day trip to Havana is a must.

Well where to start! We love Cuba, safe, friendly, best beach ever! However.... We vacationed here with our kids and were not happy. We have been all over and know typically iberostar are a good chain.... We like so much we got married in Montego Bay Iberostar and loved. We also know the food in Cuba is not the best but you can always find something to eat. Ughhh here tho, my god the whole week we lived on hotdogs and pizza. Forget fresh eggs in the morning or crepes.... I tried and waited in line for 30 min. Not fun when you have a 2 and 3 yr old. So cold boiled eggs and wieners fir breakfast. A few mornings we had to wait up to 5 min for a clean plate. Do eat breakfast down by the pool/ beach buffet area. Not as busy there and less variety but u will find boiled eggs, weiners, toast and few other things. Pool was great and clean, grounds were kept good. We checked in solo so no line ups. Had a connecting room for the kids and it was fine. Cuban beds are horrible but it's a bed. My guava had to go ask for towels a few times. My BIGGEST issue was the bathrooms .... Many many many times there was to toilet paper OR hand soap.... I asked the girls for some toilet paper but NO! This was the bathroom at the pool buffet area. We all left with a flu/cold but makes no wonder when you can't wash your hands. I have two small kids so to and from the bathroom is frequent. A few nights there was no hand soap in the lobby washroom..... The dispenser was off the wall. So we ended up taking our shampoo from the bedroom down to the pool so we could wash hands. Needs wipes and Kleenex so we went to varadero to get... NADA! Nothing anywhere.... Strangest thing ever I think. So if u travel to Cuba ( which we will again) bring toilet paper, hand soap and Heinz ketchup! Iberostar needs step it up a notch, few tweaks with upgrades and service. Oh and the Japanese restaurant was fab:) until next time Cuba but not laguna azule .

“Iberostar Laguna Azul has gone downhill from 2 years ago ”
We stayed at Laguna Azul week of Oct.22/14. Laguna Azul is variously referred to as a 5 star or 4+ star resort. This is our 2nd time there. We went this time because it was so nice 2 years ago. However, at that time the resort was only a couple of years old. Resort has NOT been well maintained - rooms need a lot of cosmetic repairs NOW before it gets worse - broken light fixtures, badly worn mattresses, worn / stained furnishings, light bulbs not replaced, fan unbalanced & loud noise, poorly working screen doors, shower head kept drooping, no plug for tub, black mold on bathroom sink, etc. Our first room displayed most of these deficiencies. After complaining & waiting 3 days to move, our 2nd room was better, though not perfect. THE BONES ARE GOOD BUT NEEDS MAINTENANCE. It is a shame because the grounds, pools, beach, bars, building exterior, gardens, etc. are all top notch. Buffet was not bad if a little boring, but there was no glass covers for food so LOTS of flies landing on food - most unappetizing and at least where I live this would be considered a health concern. Staff is excellent & try hard, but complacency is setting in - if Management walks past & ignores these obvious deficiencies, you can hardly blame them. Also, the laundry service needs upgrading - most of the towels are stained & grey instead of white - again simple updating not being done. I don't want to totally crap on this resort, especially since we got a pretty good deal at $1K per person, but if I had paid $2K + in busy spring time I would have been very disappointed. Much of it is managing expectations - NONE OF THE VACATION SUPPLIERS (WESTJET, SUNWING, TRANSAT,etc) SHOULD REFER TO THIS AS A 4+ OR EVEN WORSE 5 STAR - THIS ONLY SETS GUESTS UP FOR DISAPPOINTMENT. If it is simply called a 3+ I could overlook some of the weak spots. Based on our 2nd stay here, we will not be returning. If you go to Cuba it looks to me that you should try for the newest resort possible as maintenance seems to be difficult for them to keep up with - the Cubans had better wake up & realize they are in competition with Mexico & others where it appears you get more consistent bang for the buck based on my 2 stays in Mexican 4+ or 5 star resorts.

“This place is overrated. 3 stars max. Terrible food and fake a la carte Japanise restaurant. ”
I've just back after 9 nights in this resort. Oct 22-Nov1. Below avarage. PROS- It is located in so beautiful place with perfect sandy beachs and amazing ocean waters, not deep and not shallow, good for swimming and entertament. The hotel animaters are really good and professional. They do the best everywhere, at the beach and at the pool. The evening shows are the best in comparison with Jamaica and Bahamas. Housekeeping is very good except the fact there were not enough supplies in the bathroom and the towels are extreamly worn. CONS. Everything bad what I had read before about this Iberostar Lagune Azul are true. The food is terrible. It looks like their cocks make the food tastes this way in order guests do not eat a lot to save left-overs for the Cuban farming pid industry. Main lobby bartenders are very slow. The beach bar- poor selection of drinks. You cannot get majito in the beach bar becouse most time, they are out of mint. My biggest concern is its "Japanise a la Restourant". It is a fake place pretending to be a real one only because its cook team wears some asian clothes. Waitress service is poor. The y are not pleasant. For two people, you get 5 small piaces of sushies (1 w/salmon, 2 w/some crab meet and 2veggy ones). No selection at all. Its seafood soup is just some clear brouth smelling fish and onion. We left the restourant after this and cancelled all our reservations with othet "a la carte restourants" there. Do not go to the Japanise. It's disqusting. My conclusion, This is 3 star resort maximum and you'll have a lot of fun and relaxation if you do not expect 5 star service and food. It's Cuba. Make sure you pay for 3 stars not 5. P.S. Now, they do $ tipping. You can tip in $USD, $CAN, EURO, but they prefer cuban convertible pesoes.F For purchace, Cash only, no credit cards in the resourt. No ATM. t.

I stayed here with my girlfriend for 2 weeks at the start of August. The hotel is very big with lots of people and not many quiet areas. The food is average and facilities are ok. The staff in the cigar bar are very good, friendly funny guys. The waiter In the main pool area Kensi is a great guy and gives great service. In the buffet restaurant you definitely have to give a nice tip if you want good service otherwise service is poor. Out of the a la carte restaurants the Japanese is fun and the romantica has good food. I wouldn't rate this hotel as a 5 star more like a 3 plus.

    “Loved it ”
We have just returned after spending a week at this hotel. Its approx. 40mins from the airport. The rooms were kept lovely and clean and there is a choice of 5 restaurants, of which you can book on your arrival. The staff are friendly, and appreciate if you attempt a bit of Spanish. There is a lot of choice for food that will suit every palette. You can catch a tourbus for 5 Pesos for the whole day that will take you to the local attractions. You can also hire a taxi to take you to Havana which is approx. 2hrs away. For both trips I felt safe. There have been some negative reviews about the hotel - all I would say is go with an open mind and a positive attitude and you will have a great time!

“Good place to be in november ”
Here is a place you can really relax and enjoy, from the pool bar to reception you certainly get good service. Accept the fact that this is not is not London or paris it is cuba, its different and that is refreshing. I am a little picky about food, hey if the buffet doesn't suit you go to another eating spot on the premises. There are tour directors that can arrange outings and visits to all over.We celebrated my wifes birthday and had a great time. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

“Wished I was staying longer ”
I had a one day visit to the Laguna Azul while on a business trip. My comments are limited to my experience at the main buffet restaurant, lobby bar and my room. I am happy to say all my experiences were very good. The room was clean and in great condition. A good assortment of included beer and soft drinks were available in the fridge. The layout of the hotel is good and allows for easy access to the main building via elevator. I am an early riser, and while the buffet doesn't open until after 7am, there is a great poolside snack bar where excellent coffee and continental style snacks are available early. The main buffet for dinner and breakfast was very good and service friendly and attentive. The lobby bar had good service and quality drinks. I would gladly return here on vacation.

    “Excellent location and service ”
We stayed here for two weeks at the end of October 2014. The location of the hotel is beautiful and there is a lot to see and do. The staff were great, the entertainment team and the bar staff in particular went out of their way to help. We spent a lot of time at the pool and Kensi was wonderful always bringing us drinks. The hotel is quite dated and although there are no significant problems, a little time is needed to improve/update things which would make such a big difference. We were allocated to a less impressive room on arrival, which was a little moudly, had barely any lighting working and the fixtures were falling off. However reception were happy to move us to an ocean view room and this was much better. The food is not the best, but that seems to be a Cuban thing. A lot of meals come with tinned vegetables and powered mashed potato, but if you expect this already then you wont be disappointed. The pizza guy at the buffet restraunt works very hard making lovely pizzas to accommodate too. The a la carte restaurants were quite nice, we enjoyed a great steak at the Romantico restaurant, however this was again served with tinned vegetables and powered mashed potato! I am vegetarian and really did struggle to eat some days, so ended up loosing weight on holiday for the first time ever! The Criollo restaurant was not very good for us, the lobster tasted very off and my partner was subsequently very ill for 2 days. The staff do work very hard here and are so upbeat and happy, they made the holiday fantastic. We found out the hotel also has beach parties some days, but these were not publicised anywhere which was a shame. Finally, the hotel appears to have "ratings days" whereby they are evaluated by a third party - the hotel changes dramatically on these days - the service/food/drinks/entertainment go up 1000%. It's a shame this isn't always the case.

“Good company and good resort makes it for a good trip!”
Just came back from an all-inclusive w/ group of 12. Overall, a solid 4.5 star resort for a Cuba. Tried to get rooms together but weren't too successful. Resort seems big but actually is very walkable. Side pools and bars/restaurants are quiet/serene - almost like a different resort, which is great when you want a change. Main pool with swim up bar, buffet, lobby bar, nice and loud as it should be - all action takes place there. Interesting shows in the theater, across from disco which is as entertaining as you make it to be. Good Cuban food (with lobster at Cuban a la carte which is nice), good selection of food - if all fails, there is fresh pizza and fries at all times - you are on vacation after all! Book your a la carte quickly as it fills up - Japanese and Cuban were excellent. Italian was okay, we didn't try Romantico as we only had three included. They were able to accommodate 10-person tables with not too much intervention. Drinks are good, grab a mojito whenever fresh mint is available which is not too often. If all fails, Ron Collins is a good sub. We found drinking a cup of water in between all that drinks kept us well hydrated with no morning headaches ;) Ice Cream parlour is a nice touch. Rooms and facilities clean albeit showing their age. Bring febreeze or softener sheets if your nose is too picky. No issue with power shortages, water pressure is low but does its job. No hair conditioner provided so bring your own. Fitness center is good enough, hot sauna is awesome but don't jump in with both feet into the hot tub - it's cold and closes at 5 pm. Don't be afraid to nicely ask for things that you need or carry/bring your own with you, e.g. toilet paper (has a tendency to run out), towel and water are available at the gym. Having lots of time is handy since patience is always your friend. Beach is nice, lots of beach chairs both at the many pools and the beach, no need to reserve them. Beach towels in the room upon arrival which is a plus. When checking out early, another set available at the reception with a passport - very handy. Havana excursion - the Sunwing Tuesday/Saturday special is a good deal - cheaper than what's offered on the plane for purchase. Same for the Jeep Safari - recommended as it is very varried and at a good pace. And also cheaper at the resort through your Sunwing rep. Members from our group enjoyed both excursions a lot. Do take the time to attend the orientation, you may just find out something you didn't know and you'll get to enjoy your vacation that much more. We've been to Varadero previously and found staff less attentive and helpful then perhaps in Holguin, Cuba. if you want to show your appreciation, give your tips and giveaways to the gardeners, security staff, etc. who work just as hard and get little attention from the tourists. The hotel assures that tipping is not required for good service and we didn't see much difference in service (other than perhaps a bigger smile) when tipping. While converted Cuban Peso is preferred, we used singles USD for tipping. You can pay for excursions using non-US based credit cards with a preferred conversion rate. Don't forget to keep 25 converted pesos per person for your departure tax. The foreign exchange is available at the hotel's reception - once they run out of money so plan ahead. A trip to Varadero on a double decker is 5 converted cuban pesos and they won't accept anything other than that. Overall it was an okay vacation. We are experienced travelers (Caribbean and Europe) so not much surprises us and, with good attitude, all is good. We never go back to the same place and we don't see a reason to change that yet. Bottom line, we enjoyed ourselves which is the most important thing, right? I hope you will too!

    “I will be Back! ”
Just recently returned home from our first time in Cuba. Normally we cruise, so this was a first in many ways for my family. We stayed from Nov 7-14 2014 in Building 18.....all of us had pool views which was nice. I am going to be fair & honest with this review. I had read and read all the crappy and great reviews before leaving and felt that I was going in with a open mind. Nothing is ever perfect, so if you are wanting perfection than just stay home. This resort location is pretty awe-inspiring! When you arrive you will be pleasantly pleased, the beach is wonderful, the pools are clean and beautiful. The rooms are large as is the bathrooms. For a so called 5 year old resort, it has taken a bit of a beating....not going to lie. My biggest pet peeve was NO LIGHT BULBS!!!! my room was dimly light and I asked for them to be replaced, but I just don't think they had enough to go around. Cuba is considered a third world country and these big name resorts plunk themselves in these islands and we expect them to be maintained like they are here............NOT going to happen! Iberostar does need to renovate this resort already, but is it the management, culture, or workers fault? I think a combination of all. We saw gardeners working with hand made rakes, stained towels and linens, filthy sticky walls, cupboards and furniture.....not up to my standards of clean, but then I was raised in a different environment. This resort was one of the nicest ones I had seen on my 40 minute ride to Varadero shopping on the double duece (so you need to know that) I was able to find something to eat every day, definitely not a five star buffet ( I HATE BUFFETS) pushy rude people the other thing was they always ran out of plates, which was frustrating, but not as frustrating as the french Canadians. You may have NO Americans but you do have them......I forgot how rude and arrogant they can be. Sorry but I was once again disappointed and embarrassed by some of their behavior. I don't like to generalize, but every single time I saw an employee being reprimanded it was one because of one of them. Perhaps their standards are harder to reach I'm not really sure. Our young adult and teenagers loved the beach volleyball and water polo and all the entertainment group!!!! They were a happy bunch! I loved they bailey's and cappuccino, the clean beaches, the sandwhich bar , coconut rum and pineapple, the Japanese restaurant, the International Romantica" appie of smoked Salmon was to die for!!! Private tour to Havana was so memorable !!!! Booked a massage for me and was ok! lots of oil........but prices were reasonable and it was nice to relax ! Things to remember! Bring peanut butter, tip with single peso (the staff will take care of you!) We went through about 10 bucks a day in tipping, you will miss your coffee :( no face cloths in the rooms, bring toilet paper and extra small soaps on your trips off the resort!!! these are luxury items. The staff still do appreciate little gifts like gardening gloves, shampoo (so many ladies asking for this and lotions) Hair barrettes, elastics and bows, gum, candies, tooth brushes, lip balms, socks....head to the dollar store, also bring our own resort cups with straws and lids! you will be happy you did so!. Next time we will bring more soap, makeup, little shampoos, razors. I left a sun dress, and all my cheap toiletries for my morning waitress. My daughter was asked for her bright blue purse in lieu of anything she wanted in one store!!! So that gives you an idea of what they want. I would stay here again, the location, the people, the chill culture, the beaches all of it was amazing. If you want a 5 plus star experience don't travel to Cuba and be prepared to pay for it. In my opinion Cuba was a great destination......I would skip Mexico in a heart beat!

    “Honeymoon adventure ”
My husband and I really enjoyed our trip. The staff were extremely courteous. When we first arrived we had a 3 hour wait for our room and because I was so tired (we left right after our wedding reception) I was getting a headache... The bell man noticed me laying on the lobby couch feeling bad and he pulled some strings with the maids and got us to our room 2 hours earlier. We also really enjoyed the food. This is my third trip to Cuba, and I have yet to be let down. I will give 5* to the Japanese a la carte! How much fun the staff are and how great the food was :) would have booked over and over again. Also, the nightly entertainment was incredible. I'm sure we're all use to the "lip sync" shows, but the vocalist and dancers were phenomenal. If you are lucky enough to have the "ROCK SHOW" on your schedule, do not miss it. They killed it!! The audience will be singing along to ac/dc, and pink Floyd. All in all great trip. I would how ever skip seeing Havana. As beautiful as it is, it is very polluted. So if you are sensitive I would advice against it. We were all getting headaches from the heavy diesel fumes. Would I return, sure.

    “Ok for Cuban standards ”
Over all we had a blast and a vacation we will never forget. It's the people I went with and met there that made the difference ... Rooms, are ok once you find one that doesn't smell like mold, took us 5 tries before we found one that had no smell, and still not cleaned properly ...Food is ok, lots of options , as long as you are not willing to try foods you never eat before , stick with what you know . The a la carte are ok, except the Italian, felt sick after...Staff there , I would say 50/50 friendly ... Tip them every time - you're ok, else you just have to wait for whatever is that you're requesting, and I mean it , but it's Cuba after all... The balcony door ? Yeah you need a body builder to open that ... Oh and the water pressure , totally annoying ... Takes time to have a proper shower .. Would I come back there ? Maybe , if that would be the only option ... All that matters is go with great people and make the best of it ;) I'm not the type to complain , but for the money we spent we expected better...Over all as I said we had a blast!

    “Great Resort!”
Hi!...Just got back from Cuba and the Iberostar Laguna Azul ....and I have to say I miss the place already. My expectations for Cuba were not that great, but I was pleasantly surprised! First I should let you know I have stayed at many all inclusives all over the Carib, so I can give you a realistic review of the place compared to other destinations. This trip was just supposed to be a warm up for our vacation in Jan/Feb...but i really liked it!! Check in was slow...the front desk staff are ok but not that interested in helping you...they seem unmotivated and bored with their job....but no problem really just mediocre attention from them. We got our rooms and found it to be just slightly below standard to other all inclusives....toilet paper holder broken, tv remote missing, no kleenex etc etc....just little things not right, but nothing to really ruin your vacation. The rooms were clean and the bathroom was really nice!! Beds are a bit small but nothing wrong with them. Maid service was very good and they were very friendly..beds made up every day and fridge stocked when i needed it. TV channel selection was poor...only 3 english channels, but who cares?? You are not there to watch tv and you are in their country and they speak deal with it!!! As far as the food.....I have to agree with the other is not that good. Always something to eat but you end up eating hamburgers, hotdogs and pizza for the the other reviews mention. One item I really liked was the croquettes....I don't even know what they are but I was hooked on them!! Other resorts have a really wide variety of food which changes every night but this place was very repetitive!! Another problem was cold food!! Most of it is lukewarm or cold since they place the food under heat lamps that have long ago burnt out. So you have to go to the stations where they cook your food while you wait...then it will be hot. Overall the food was a little disappointing. The beach is very good but not palm trees to sit under but alot of shaded huts to sit under...never a problem finding a free one.....but I really like sitting under the shade of a palm tree on the beach and falling asleep. No palm trees on the beach........ We ended up going into town and finding beautiful beaches with trees to sit under......something for you to consider .....but the beach at this resort is kind of like Wasaga beach ( for those who live in Ontario). The rest of the grounds are very nice and clean and the staff are very friendly! There is alot of fun activities going on around the pool. The lobby bar is excellent and just has a very good atmosphere. One thing I liked is listening to the woman playing the piano every nite.....great songs and makes for a relaxing evening just listening to her. The shows were standard Carib resort entertainment ,with the exception of the evenings when they bring in the professional dancers.......very good show!! In summary.....I would recommend this place to anyone wanting to visit Cuba...these minor details mentioned will definitely not ruin your trip. If it is your first time to the will love it!!! If you have been to numerous resorts you will find some very minor shortcomings. I have a feeling it is not the fault of the resort but of the limitations of the country in obtaining what they need. One thing I have to mention though, is the value you receive for what you pay is outstanding!! I left this place feeling I really got my money's worth which is why I will probably return. The Cuban people are extremely friendly, really nice people and the safe environment etc exceeded my expectations. If you go it is a must to visit Havana.....all can arranged at the hotel. So what are you waiting for??? Iberostar Laguna Azul is a great time just waiting for you!

    “had a great time ”
We loved this property. It is kept very clean. Our maid service was super. We did not have a problem with the food at all . we found that the main buffet was quite good. The Cuban a-al-carte was not our favorite. I have some severe allergies and must be really careful.. the beach is beautiful. We spent a lot of time once we were told that is were they hold a lot of the games and stuff. There sure isn't any shortage of lounge chairs. We recommended this place to some friends this past summer and they quite enjoyed. The disco is great. Very lively but you did not hear it near our rooms.

    “Great Value Hotel ”
if you looking for a place were it is family oriented, good entertainment. This is the place to be. This hotel is a very beautiful, with contemporary colors, located in between the Memories Varadero and the Riu. My room was ocean-view (troom 20310 building 20, it had a nice side view the ocean. I had the chance to go the Japanese Restaurant which was great. ( you are only allowed 3 A la carte for a 7 night duration and 1 a carte for 3 night duration). The downside, it is not unlimited a la carte, the buffet did provide alot options for food, which is great but they need to work on cooking the food thoroughly. There is no complimentary wifi - It is with a cost of 5 CUC per hour with the use of 2 devices. The rooms did have a little of mold, in the door handles, floor, walls. They had dirty beach towels, the bed cover sheet were damped and stained which caused a smell in the room. Tips if they did want to step out of the hotel - I highly recommend the use of the double decker bus that is in use from 9am-8pm for 5 cuc for the whole day. Hop on and off with the ticket that is given. Also go to Havana at least one day - Sunwing provides great One day Havana Tour ( there is also promotional prices on certain days) The hotel is a great value, the staff are friendly and always willing to help.

    “Good, for Cuba ”
My boyfriend and I returned from a 4-night stay at the Iberostar Laguna Azul. We have mixed feelings about the hotel, but overall it did the trick as we just needed a bit of R&R. Before arriving, I had emailed (in Spanish!) the general address found on their website ( requesting a quiet room as we were celebrating our anniversary. I never heard back. When we arrived at the resort, reception could not find our reservation. When they did find it, we were given a room facing the disco and theatre, which meant that we heard a ton of noise from the rehearsals and shows in the theatre, plus noise from the disco at night. We were told no other rooms were available because it is a slower season and they close some sections of the hotel. In the mornings we heard noise from other guests and staff carrying on conversations in the hallway. We stuck it out in our noisy room. Some sort of recognition for our anniversary would have been nice. As for the rest of the room.... When we first checked in, there was a light in the bathroom falling down which was quickly fixed by maintenance without us asking (we're assuming the housekeeper noticed and asked for it to be repaired). The fan above the bed worked, but was so unstable we were terrified to keep it on for fear it would fall on us. The air conditioner, safe and hair dryer worked fine. There were some lightbulbs burnt out in the room (and one in the sconce in the hallway) but overall we had no issues seeing. Our housekeeper was lovely and wrote us a note each day. Our room was clean but had a lingering musty smell. Towels, toilet paper and shampoo were kept restocked, but we never got a second bottle of body wash or another bar of soap. The bed was lumpy and very low to the ground. We did have a short power failure one morning, which was then followed by a lack of running water, but everything did come back on fairly quickly. The shower water was never hot (it was warm) and there was a big step to get into the bathtub/shower combo - not easy for anyone who might have difficulty lifting their legs up to their waist. The room's decor was fine but nothing special. There is a minibar that is restocked every other day (you can get your water bottle refilled at any bar or restaurant). There was also a mention of room service in the map that we got at check-in, but could not find a menu or any other information in the room. We also only had one phone in the room which was mounted on the wall by the toilet... If you have never been to Cuba, don't expect much from the food. Simple food items such as carrots or green beans have no flavour and are covered in oil. The burgers by the beach were decent, as was the pizza. If you want the best food at the buffets, in the mornings stick with the omelette stations, lunch and dinner stick with pizzas, pastas or the fresh-grilled food stations. There was another buffet by the beach that was unappetizing and had birds all over the tables. The buffet food was generally lukewarm - never hot. The hours were not great - there was a big gap between breakfast ending and lunch beginning, so if you are looking for an early lunch you are out of luck. We ate dinners at the Romantico restaurant and the Italian and were not impressed with either. Our reservation time slots were also very late at night (9pm) as we were told there were no other slots available, but when we walked by the restaurants earlier in the evenings, we saw empty tables, and had no issues being seated when we showed up at 8:30pm. We think the reservation girl was just looking for tips. Service in the a-la-carte restaurants is much better than the buffets. In Cuba, the service is generally good once you actually start getting it. You just can't be in a rush as employees will generally continue to carry on a conversation with other employees and only begin to assist you once they are done. This was observed pretty much everywhere in Cuba, not just at the Iberostar. There was one night in the main buffet where there was a survey given out to everyone asking about various things at the resort. That night had more managers present that we'd seen our entire trip, and they continually stopped by to ask you about your survey responses as you were filling them out. One of the servers even checked the box for the highest score for restaurant service, telling him that because he'd had no issues it was obviously perfect.... The grounds were maintained well and very nice to walk around. It was a much smaller resort than we were expecting but overall it was nice. The pool and beach were great. As it was low season, we had no issues getting chairs in either spot at any time of the day. The only issue we had was with one staff member by the main pool telling us that some seats were reserved, but there were no towels, bags, etc near them. We were able to find other seats easily, but were a bit put off by that employee. The animacion team at the beach and pool were great. We played pirate games (dressed as pirates) and enjoyed seeing the dancing lessons. Most nights, we sat in the lobby bar area or out on the lobby patio. There was a piano player there, as well as a jazz band near the pool that could be heard. These were definitely good alternatives for the shows in the theatre which were a little tacky but the staff were working hard to put it on. On our last day, we had a late flight and were able to get some time in at the pool before we left. We had to leave our passport at the front desk in exchange for pool towels, which I was a bit worried about, but there were no issues getting it back. We also left our phones to be charged at the desk which they were able to do for us without an issue (we had not brought adapters). We showered and changed in the changerooms for the spa/health club. We had not used them at all otherwise - just a word of warning that the jacuzzi on the 5th floor is FREEZING! The guests at the hotel were primarily Canadians but there were also several other nationalities. For the most part, everyone was very friendly and great to chat with. As the resort was not too busy, we ran into the same people several times during our stay. We also met people from other resorts while on the double-decker bus that takes you into town. Veradero is filled with tourists and very safe. We also did a day trip into Havana through Sunwing which was great (will do a separate review on that later). Overall, the resort itself is very nice. If you don't mind a spartan room and mediocre food, or, if you at least book expecting this, you will be pleasantly surprised by the friendly staff, nice pool and beautiful beach.

“Wonderful friendly people at the Ibrerostar Laguna Azul in Varadero Cuba ”
Our trip to Cuba was done via Thomas Cook flying from Manchester to Varadero in October 14. After a 9.75 hour flight, we finally arrived. A fairly quick passage through customs and a relatively short journey to our hotel. This 810 bedroomed hotel hides its enormous size as you drive up to the main entrance, which we found was on level 3. The signing in was swift and efficient, collecting our red all inclusive bands. Our room on level 2 was one floor down from reception. The room was well laid out, if not a little tired in décor, with a large king sized comfortable bed. The bathroom had a corner bath unit with a shower over it. The water pressure was not so good but it did work. The amazing thing about this room was the was housekeeping's Mary maintained it daily. She not only gave our towels the origami treatment which was always a pleasure to see, she wrote short notes to hope we had a wonderful stay. She kept the room clean and fresh with the occasional flower left with the towel display. The balcony overlooked the main pool area which we found to be rather noisy with the organised daily activity blasting out from their speakers. We ventured behind the main pool and found a satellite pool, that was well equipped with shaded sun beds, and a willing sun-bed pad provider who would always bring you a pad for the hard plastic sun beds. The main buffet restaurant on the ground floor, level1, was always filled with a fresh, wide variety of foods, for more European tastes. Our tip to UK traveller's is if you would like something freshly cooked, then queue at the choice of cooking stations. At breakfast either fresh hot pancakes or omelettes, at dinner, pasta or pizza. But please don't think that's all there is there is a very wide selection - something for everyone. This hotel has four table service restaurant's which need to be pre-booked in advance. A Japanese, an Italian, a Cuban and an a la carte international one. Tried all four, but strongly recommend the Japanese as not only will you enjoy amazing hot food but a set of chief's who's delivery is quite an experience. The a la carte international one certainly didn't disappoint either with quality tenderloin-steak on offer. The Cuban we enjoyed slightly overcooked lobster. Towards the beach you will find a pizza and grille for lunchtime's, but again supported with another wide ranging buffet, found right next to the beautiful beach. The beach and lovely Atlantic sea was warm and inviting but if you have any walking difficulty, please be aware there is a ledge below the water line at about knee height which gave a few a bit of a problem coming back out from a swim. Hold on to your partner and watch the waves. Whilst on the beach you may be approached to see if your interested in Cuban cigars or to go off site skydiving. This was an amazing spectacle to watch with up to 12 twin person cutes coming from a rather high helicopter. The locals only need to be told once, if you reject them, they will not disturb you. As a base we went on two Thomas Cook excursions, the Bottle Nosed Dolphin show which is just down the road, presents the opportunity to swim with them after the show. A once in a lifetime experience. The other was a marvellous trip into Havana with a drive around the city which included a lunch at a Hemmingway haunt. A real gem was to see how the cigars are rolled by dark dusky maidens (LOL) and the Cuban "Marriage" between Havana rum, a Romeo and Juliette cigar and an espresso coffee. A fascinating experience combined with a tour around the rum museum. In summery, a great place for an unusual holiday. Try it you will enjoy it. We certainly did.

    “Good hotel, lots of choice”
We transferred here from another hotel in Varadero & were very glad that we did! The buffet has plenty of choice, the piña coladas are delicious, the terrace is a great place to sit in the evening, the pools are nice & the staff are friendly. The only issue was that there was a very nasty smell coming from the air con unit in our room. We explained this to reception but I'm not sure that they understood the problem. In the end we just tried to avoid using it. Otherwise, it was great & the Japanese restaurant is worth trying :-)

“Great hotel marred by a bad buffet and service issues ”
I have to start my saying we actually loved the hotel and enjoyed our trip. We were in Building 10 on the second floor and were lucky enough to have a pool close by with an excellent server. Our room was clean, although were were disappointed by the size of the beds but overall it was fine. A CRT television was a blast from the past but having CTV in english was nice late at night. Everything was good until we hit the buffet. I couldn't find any food I liked. The food was cold, poor quality and just plain tasted bad. Fortunately we found the A la Carte restaurants which had some decent food, not great but not gross either. The Japanese restaurant was very entertaining and Daniel, our chef, was energetic and hugely entertaining. The Italian restaurant was good. Again, not great, but good. We went to one show and left after 10 minutes as it was hokey and just not very good. We took our 13 year old daughter and 15 year old son and at night, they had nothing to do. the pools were closed, and there was no teen activities at all. Thank goodness for the TV! We had a great maid, except for Monday when a different maid showed up and barely cleaned the room, and told us there were no towels! We got no extra soaps, shampoo, etc for our trip. We almost ran out of toilet paper everyday. I suggest you bring your own.

“A beautiful property in need of some serious maintenance ”
This hotel, while originally a beautiful, well designed building complex, has been allowed to show definite signs of aging and deterioration. It should have some immediate maintenance done on it if it wishes to remain in a "5 star" category....Although staff are very helpful and friendly, there are many little things in the rooms that need upgrading, such as lighting that doesn't work, tiles that are chipping and crumbling, and sinks and tubs that are in serious need of refitting, since they are crumbling away from the granite counters. Many complaints were voiced by guests concerning the overall quality of the food in the main dining areas. Overall, we enjoyed our stay here, but if Iberostar wants to keep this hotel from sliding further down the ratings scale (it was currenlty at #14 in general ratings) they will need to do some serious and timely maintenance. The best thing about this complex was the amazing service and genuine friendliness of all the staff - they made us feel very welcome!

    “Honey moon ”
We visited Nov 1 to Nov 7. Checked in at 12 am. First room was not ready, had to go back, to change it. Second room was ok. But! Wall lamp almost fell apart, wardrobe's door wasnt sliding, at the end just broke, no long distance calls. Went to reception, she said, it's too late now, tomorrow technition will come. Well...never came. We had to buy some calls package, in order to call home. They provide with inet card for one hour 5 peso, but we hardly used it and it ended in 20 min. Towels...too thin and color like dirty white. Next time bringin mine. After 4 days, maid stopped to change the towels. Was very surprised by that. And wasnt realy clean in our room, so at the end just put "do not disturb". What was the point, result was same. If you chose la carte, dont go to Italian, didnt like at all. Japanese the best. Buffet also good. Someone already mentioned, plates run out quick. Also, for pancake station, they have to have at least two people. Not many people, but long wait time. Once waited 40 minutes, but very tasty. Food was just ok. Liked the most chicken breast, was cooked in front of you and pizza. Loved their night show. It's a must. Liked their drinks. Most liked pina colada. Didnt like their coffee and tea. Pool/beach entertaiment is very good. People are very friendly. We went downtown varadero. Fast, convenient, safely, not expensive. They have live music - piano, saxsaphone. Very romantic. In overall was good. I still recommend this hotel. Probably will come again.

“Our worries were put to rest! ”
First off, before going I read A LOT of reviews on trip advisor, some good, some not so great. I think reading some of the bad reviews helped manage our expectations, and when we arrived we were pleasantly surprised! First, the lobby, bars, beach, and pools are superb. No complaints. The food was just okay. Never did I say "ew" or feel anything was not properly cooked. At the same time I don't think my wife and I ever said "this is great!". Their is lots of variety so at the very least you can find something you like. In a nutshell, in was better food then we expected, and it was okay. The rooms were very clean (building 12 second floor) and we had no "issues", but they are starting to show age, and the beds are not great. What I would say is the biggest strength of this resort is the staff, and the entertainment. The entertainment team was awesome, warm and friendly. In particular Juan on the entertainment team seems to go above what you would expect and is probably the most genuinely friendly person we met there. The nightly shows are a MUST, and a great way to spend the evenings. Overall, I would rate our overall experience a 5/5. If you are going to relax, have fun, and enjoy a beautiful resort and beach this is for you. Would I return? In a heartbeat.

    “A wonderful experience ”
After many years or working non-stop we decided that we needed a break. Thinking about a location we zeroed on Cuba. It was hot, peaceful and unpolluted of American "interests". Visited our trusted travel agent and were given a list of hotels in Varadero. Iberostar Laguna Azul was our choice. At our arrival (October 3rd) we were greeted with warmth and attention by the staff. We had requested a room at a higher level while booking and it wouldn't be ready for another 20 minutes. Immediately we were shown to the main dining room where we had lunch. When we returned to the lobby, we were taken to our room. It was great, exactly what we were looking for. The resort is simply wonderful. The grounds very well maintained and clean. Our room (11321) was always very well taken care of by a wonderful lady. Every day we were looking for the surprise we had waiting; some arrangement with the towels, flowers everywhere, blankets. Everything available was a source for some creative expression of this lady. We brought a couple travel pillows and yoga towels, these became a showcase of everything you could do with those. In summary, that is what we loved the most about the Cuban people, their creative power and cultivated minds. The beach is just a dream; the white sand expands forever in both directions and there are plenty of parasols and recliners. It would have been nice to have cushions without having to smuggle them from the pool area. The entertainment at the beach was fun. We had pickup soccer, volleyball, water-fitness or dance lessons. If you are not like me that brought a good pile of books, you can be busy to your heart content. The ocean is so beautiful, the water warm and crystalline; most times, there were no waves and a good alternative to the pools. Funny thing, once you get to certain depth, to your waist will be enough, little fish will come and do some pedicure on you. At the beach it was very peaceful and we never had issues of leaving non-valuables on our recliners. Also, perhaps of security, there were no ad-hoc sales people or creeps wondering around. When the sun was too strong or we needed a quiet time, the pools were the perfect alternative, there are many at the resort, the ones on the sides of the property are quiet, mostly adults wanting to read or relax, spend their time there. The main pool, however, is full of activities and the aquabar is a very popular destination. As on the beach, here, at the main pool, the entertainment is great. The group of "animación" were fantastic, always looking after their guests, their well being and providing them with pertinent attention. In particular, I have to thank Juanito, Jenny and Lady Gaga for their time chatting and sharing their beautiful souls with us. Roberto, their supervisor, was always making sure everyone was looked after. Roberto, we promise to visit the disco next time ;-) Every night, we had a show. In the two weeks we stayed only one or two repeated, understandable as one of these was the Cuban show. A real treat, indeed. We looked forward to these events as they were always entertaining; the singers and dances were amazing, obviously showing a professional upbringing in their fields. Many of these themed events awoke, at different times, the audience's interests and nostalgia: ABBA, Pink Floyd, The Lion King, Phantom of the Opera, you name it... It's remarkable how much hard work these artists have put into their presentations. The sound could have been better, many times you could see the orchestra or singer catching the attention from the sound booth to correct the levels or balance. At times it was too loud or too soft. Perhaps, more communication with someone on the floor would be helpful. After all presentations, there was time to take pictures of the crew and we were all invited to dance the resort's theme song: Carimbó do Macaco (we still play it at home from Youtube to remind ourselves of the great fun we had) One of the concerns we read a lot was about food in Cuba. The Laguna Azul, in our humble opinion, should be exempt. The buffet had great variety and the dishes were replenished timely. There was some line up for grilled items, but it's understandable. Loved the fruits, always fresh and delicious. The brewed coffee was bad, really bad; however, before getting to the restaurant, in the morning, we would make a stop at another one where they have a espresso machine and get a double-shot espresso, a cappuccino or a cortado that we could bring to the main restaurant. Problem solved. The themed restaurants were good as well. Although, we noticed that making late reservations may not be a good idea as some of the popular items were sold-out by when we got there around 20:00. Having so many great Japanese restaurants in Victoria, I would say the one at the Laguna Azul was disappointing, not as per the quality of the food, as for the lack of "Japanese" taste. I guess that a lack of ingredients can pose quite a challenge; however, the chefs are very entertaining and engage their guests during the cooking process, that happens before their eyes. We definitely enjoyed, foodwise, the Criollo and Romántico. At the lobby area, where one of the bars is located, every night there is live music with a wonderful pianist that cycles through a good repertoire of all types of music; many people approach her with requests, that most times, she would honour. Some days there are other groups that would perform typical Cuban or Ibero-Latin American music. Find a good spot and enjoy mojitos or daiquirís while listening to the music. Many couples, taken by the music, would take the floor and dance in freedom. These were the best two weeks we had in many, many years. The wonderful staff at the Laguna Azul made sure we will never forget this experience and will definitely come back. Thank you Juanito, Jenny, Lady Gaga, camarera (unfortunately I forgot her name) and all the staff. Chef Francisco, la paella estuvo deliciosa. Highly recommended.

    “One of the best ”
For the price, location and staff, this is one of the best resorts available. Literally no complaints during our 7-day stay. The staff are incredible, the beach is beautiful and the food is.....well, so so. It is what it is. If you're expecting gourmet in Cuba then you're setting yourself up for disappointment. Pro-Tip: bring ketchup and BBQ sauce. Management: I know you're reading this! Give special props when you see them to Lady Gaga and Heineken - two of the entertainers we met - as well as Yuriel at the pool bar. All three made our stay that much more enjoyable. Looking forward to visiting again in a few months.

“The best hotel in Varadero ”
We saw a few other hotels whilst we were in Varadero and in my opinion ours was by far the best! Great location, right on the beach. The hotel has 4 Al a carte restaurants to chose from as well as a main dining hall (buffet). The food in Cuba isn't luxury, its very basic without a lot of seasoning, but still very enjoyable. There is NO english tea in Cuba so bring your own if you want a cuppa! There are also several snack bars located on the resort that serve pizza, chips, burgers, toasties etc. There is a theatre and night club with entertainment every night, the lobby area is always alive with music, dancing and people. The rooms were basic but clean. Our air condioning unit was a bit damp smelling but not to the point of wanting to switch rooms. The staff were very friendly and helpful, very smily and talented with all their singing and dancing. There are 3 pools - 2 quiet ones and one main 'busy' one that has salsa classes, aqua zumba and a live DJ. All in all a fab hotel and we'd definitely go again. TIP: Bring a pack of cards, quiz aps or games, books etc - the entertaining is fantastic but if you just want a quiet evening it's good to have something to do (as there's not much in the way of TV entertainment).

First let me start by saying we began our vacation in Iberostar Tanios and unfortunate mistake, but thanks to sunwing and the Iberostar laguna we we're able to move. This hotel is amazing from the minute you arrive your treated like gold, from the desk staff to the luggage men, your maid and all other staff on this resort. The people who work here are happy and friendly they bend over backwards to make your stay memorable. The rooms are lovely modern and clean we stayed by the quiet pool and were spoiled coffee delivered to our patio every morning. There is a abundance of pools and things to do the beach is large and the water inviting so clear and warm.i can't say enough about this hotel.I have been to cuba several times and have always stayed at a iberostar and with the exception of tainos which I must say was a huge disappointment I would say if you want a resort that will pamper you and is beautiful to look at and has wonderful staff and food etc. then this is your place. You are sure to enjoy yourself 100% I will return to this little slice of heaven as soon as I can!

    “Great Holiday ”
Just arrived back home from Laguna azul what a great hotel staff are really friendly, ice cream lady was great our maid was really excellent (room16210) swimming pool are very clean no rush for sun beds, beach was clean and very safe the only thing that let the hotel down was the food. It just wanted Gordon Ramsey to go in for a week and make it more presentable. Don't get me wrong we did not go hungry there was always fresh food to eat. All in all it was well worth the money

    “Cuba Te Espera ”
We visited Varadero from October 25 to November 1 with Sunwing. Great flight and transfers as always with Sunwing, a favourite airline. Beautiful weather with lovely trade winds all week. This is a wonderful hotel with an excellent quality of service. The grounds are gorgeous and well maintained with a beautiful beach. Rooms are spacious and very clean and we were able to get a room upgrade at no cost very quickly. We have travelled throughout Cuba since 1983 and this hotel is certainly the best we have visited in the country so far. The staff members are well trained and extremely polite and courteous, even in the face of very rude guests. I could not have maintained my composure so well in similar circumstances. Piano bar in the lobby was great as was the Jazz by the pool in the evening. We are up by 6 and asleep by the time the shows start so I cannot comment on other entertainment. There are three gorgeous pools so if the late afternoon partying by the main pool is too loud, you can easily find refuge. Please remember when you are visiting Cuba that the country has faced a debilitating US trade embargo since the early 60's and that it struggles to import a wide range of products and supplies that are easily accessible to other Caribbean nations; this in turn affects some of the available services including the food. Naturally the hotel food does not stand up to Canadian fine dining standards. The food overall was good but if you are looking for a vacation that includes gourmet dining you may have some trouble finding it in Cuba. Maybe someday. The lobster in Varadero Restaurants is wonderful however! Many thanks to staff members Jose on the front desk, Yariel and Kenzie at the Aqua Bar and Raoul and Marlen at the Buffet for all the help and assistance throughout the week and the warm friendly smiles at all times! Heidi from Gaviota is a wonderful tour guide as well. If you are looking for an affordable, safe, and secure vacation in a beautiful country with kind welcoming people, then Cuba and the Iberostar Laguna Azul will not disappoint. I have been told that the Iberostar Varadero does have great food.....worth a try? Lynn and Pierre

    “Amazing staff and service ”
We traveled as a group of 5 adults and one 2 year old baby. We were immediately impressed by the quality of the hotel and rooms as well as the amazing grounds and beach. Above and beyond, every request we had for the baby was satisfied (including many milk orders). The staff was courteous, warm, generous and truly cared about our comfort. Sexy Nancy (beach animator) was phenomenal and we love her like a family member. The buffet was surprisingly varied, but of course there were certain dishes that were lacking in quality. The hotel itself was in fabulous condition as well as the grounds. The rooms are spacious, air-conditioned and well-kept. For those who are going on an initial trip to cuba, especially with children, you couldn't ask for more. Thank you to all the lovely staff of Iberostar Laguna Azul. Your warmth touched us deeply and we look forward to seeing you again. Erika, Emmanuel, Alice and Astrid - Montreal, Canada

    “What a memorable trip! ”
I stayed here for 11 days as I had booked the last three days in Havana. I think I can give a good overview as I stayed in a couple of rooms during the stay. Location wise, it is about 2hr 30 mins from Havana airport. Super easy to get to Varadero Town as the "jump on-jump off bus" stops right outside the road by the hotel (5 pesos a day - about £3). I didn't do any excursions this trip, but the hotel is located very close to the Delfinario and a small funfair, as well as the Pirate Cave, Mambo and Havana Club. You can get wifi cards in the lobby for 3pesos for 30mins or 5 pesos for 1 hour. You can get access by the main pool and the lobby. I booked the suite to stay with a good friend. I had seen a video on YouTube about the suite (posted by a Tripadvisor member), so I had a good idea what the room looked like. Unfortunately, they only had a king size bed (not twin), but we were happily provided with a spare single bed. (I opted for the sofa as it was pretty comfortable). The room was gorgeous...would be a bit of a waste for one person, but loved the bottle of "welcome" rum, loved the double bath and shower, loved two toilets, absolutely loved the view from the balcony. We were in the 20th block and the sea was literally in front of the balcony...lovely! The room had two TVs (one in the bedroom, the other in the living room), a stereo and coffee machine (which we didn?t use). The maid, who was simply adorable, filled the fridge every two days with water, fizzy drinks and beer The pools were lovely, clean and one for every mood! There was the main pools with the swim up bars, DJ, entertainment/games etc, another around the corner with a cute Jacuzzi section. I also saw another pool on the last day as I was being whizzed back to the lobby with my luggage on the buggy. (It is to the left of the theatre if you are looking for it!)The beach is literally on the doorstep/back garden of the hotel. It was clean, with plenty of sun loungers available. There is also another bar on the beach. To be honest, there are spots dotted all over the hotel, where you can grab a drink, coffee, hot dog/burger/pizza/chips at any time, e.g. in the middle of the night after a night of tequila and dancing! :p It was my birthday whilst I was out there and, wow, did I get spoiled. We went out the night before and didn?t return back to the hotel until4/5am (and yes, we stopped off for food at the "burger bar"!). After a little sleep, we rushed to breakfast, stopping off for much needed coffee at the lobby bar afterwards. I love coffee. Personally, the coffee at breakfast was too weak for me...the best places, in my opinion, were in the lobby, the outdoor eatery area (by the ice-cream and burger bar bit) and the small, orangey building (to the left of the main pool), which was perfect for a good coffee and it was quiet. After coffees, we went back to the hotel room, where the maid had put up balloons and happy bday was so sweet! There was also a bottle of sparkling wine! My friend and I headed off to the Jacuzzi to enjoy the sunshine and drink the wine, but to be honest, my liver couldn?t take it from the night before, so we gave most of it away. Off we went to lunch, after some relaxing sun/pool time (best hangover medicine ever!). We had our "favourite spot" to eat in the main restaurant, but after getting our food, assumed someone else was sitting there, but the lovely Marcus in the restaurant left flowers all over the table...was very sweet...and more sparkling wine! My mind was saying drink it, but my body was saying "I need more recovery time", so we took it up to the room. After a little rest, we got ready for dinner and the show. (A quick note about food...I am a super fussy eater and I ate (in excess at times) every day...there are rices, potatoes, fresh pasta station, omelette, various meats, seafood, fresh fruit, desserts, ice creams etc etc...Indeed, it is not Michelin star food, but I ate well and did not get ill). My friend and her boyfriend had the Japanese restaurant and said it was fun and enjoyed the experience The shows were really good because they had a really good variety of acts/entertainment each day. The dancers were sooo good and the male dancers were super friendly (and before you get any ideas, they were gay!!) At the end of the show, my friend said she wanted to take pictures closer to the stage, so we went a bit closer. Before I knew it, I was being walked onto the stage by the entertainment team, who sang happy birthday to me with the audience, then proceeded to do a dance, which everyone joined in. I had no idea what I was doing (re. the dance) and felt so ashamed to be standing in front of everyone, but the entertainment team were so lovely to plan the surprise with my friend (although the shame of doing a kind of "heads, shoulders, knees and toes" type dance will haunt me forever!!) There is also a disco which starts at 11pm My friend's boyfriend came to stay for a couple of days, so I moved to another room. I booked the room with the Sunwing agent, who was based in the lobby as the rate was cheaper than the hotel direct (thank you reception staff for the tip!) This was (I think) in the 16th block. It is the same building as the main lobby. In fact, it was along the same corridor. I was a little apprehensive about potential noise, but I didn?t hear a thing! Was a completely different view/atmosphere from the suite. You could see the majority of the complex, including the ocean in the distance. If you sit on the balcony, you may be off-put by the entertainment at the pool during the day, or the live band at the top balcony area, but it was no bother for me. Once you close the balcony door, you can?t hear outside! I have to say, the entertainment around the pool was really good. There was a bingo session (was fun with some people really getting into it!) and another day a show with a shark and various superheroes which was hilarious. Great job entertainment team In terms of this room, it was really nice...with a gorgeous bath. I'm a shower person, but really liked the shape of the bath. It was spacious and still would have been perfect for two. The suite is more expensive, but you get a sitting room and an even bigger bathroom...but, that?s not essential (for me). When I stay again, I don?t mind booking either...will be finances that dictate. Although the room is on the 3rd floor, the lift, which takes you directly to the main restaurant/floor where the pool/beach is, so thought that is beneficial if you have trouble walking. I must say, this is my third time to Cuba. Anybody that knows about Cuba will understand the challenges the average person faces financially. When people complain about "having to give tips" in reviews, it reminds me how stingy some people can be! You are in an all-inclusive hotel, where you don't have to pay for anything. The weather is beautiful, the people are lovely, you have the ocean a few feet away...people peoples, remember, you are in a position to travel to an amazing country. You are not surviving on £25 a month, working your a** off in the sun to late in the night. Please don?t be like some people, e.g. people that complain the salt doesn't come out of the shaker with ease or the Canadian woman who commented to one of the reception staff, "you would have to pay me a lot of money to do those hours", when she said she was 12 hour shift. How insensitive can you is a communist country, don't you think she would like to earn more too (sorry, rant over!!) :) Hey, you can't take the money with you, so it's ok to drop some change here and there! Trust me, it is needed and they are genuinely grateful. As a tip, don't forget the gardeners...the gardens looked impeccable at all times and they do work super hard! Thank you sooo much Iberostar Laguna Azul team. I am soooo sorry, I didn't write everyone's names down and I am terrible with names, so have forgotten some, but a huge than you to Marcus, Yanisel and Glain in the restaurant (muchos gracias for my limonata and pina!), the guys and gals in the entertainment and dancers team, the hard working gardeners, the ladies and gentleman at the main reception, who were also so helpful with my many queries/requests, Yariany in the main lobby (such a lovely lady - super helpful and always smiling), our maid (I am soooo sorry I have forgotten her name...I think it began with M, but she cleaned the 2nd floor in the 20th block whilst we were there and made our room spotless daily), the senors y senoras at the burger bar and the restaurant, esp. those at the grill...I sweated like a beast just waiting for my steak, let alone working over that hot grill all night...thank you!! I had a truly wonderful birthday and an amazing holiday. I would recommend this hotel for singles, couples and families. There is something for everyone. Hasta pronto! :)

    “First Timers ”
My husband and I travelled with my sister and brother-in-law(they're 3rd timers) and visited Varadero, Cuba for the first time from Sept. 16-24 of this year and stayed at Iberostar Laguna Azul and we had such a great time. The staff are unbelievable! They definitely made us feel very comfortable and attends to our needs and wants almost immediately. Luis the so called "younger brother of Antonio Banderas" (look alike) our server was simply amazing, he went out of his way to get my husband a drink that is only available at the main bar in the lobby (we didn't know that), and then everytime we're back for another meal he would just simply have it ready on our table already. Simply Amazing! Dayanis at the main bar would always be smiling and checking if there's anyting we need. "Sexy" Nancy, makes you feel like she's known you for the longest time, with hugs and kisses each time she sees us. They all just exudes positive energy. The whole time we were there, we didn't get a chance to touch the pool at all, you can't blame us because the beach is fabulous. I know a lot of people would go berserk with this comment, but it's like Tulum beach without the waves. I guess that is inpart that we were just lucky that week the beach was pretty calm. Although I do agree with some of the comments that some of the infrastructure need some work, but I also understand that it is pretty hard to keep up and may look a bit 'well-used' but as well maintained as you can manage in the tropics, which are notoriously hard on structures. So this doesn't affect my rating at all having to consider the overall experience we had. We were also fortunate to have met the General Manager. We noticed him being present in all the major events and always ever so present to check making sure that all is running well. My sister and I were pretty impressed. These are the things that most customers don't notice, it was refreshing to see the GM having to be as hands-on as the supervisors. I would definitely recommend this hotel and for sure will come back to stay again on our next visit back to Cuba.

“Great experience and wonderful entertainment! ”
I stayed at this resort with my family from Oct 13-19 and we enjoyed every minute of it. First off the hotel was clean. They make very easy to plan trips and activities. Every night there are entertainment shows which get everyone cheering and laughing, definite must see. Shout outs to to the entertainers Juan Manuel, Sexy Nancy, Jonnie Walker, Magic 50 Cent, and Lady Gaga. The entertainers were the highlight of our trip, they did a spectacular job everyday and had the most positive vibes that definitely rubbed off. I guarantee Juan will make you laugh during every show and activity, he's very entertaining! The buffet food was.. alright, but the a la carte meals were much much better. There was a variety of other people staying at the hotel, whether you're with family or friends there's groups of all ages to interact with. Whether you're coming to relax or party this resort is accommodating enough for both. Daily activities help you interact with others and meet new people. We will definitely be returning. -grande

    “Best Vacation ”
People from the hotel were amazing, Always helpful. Entertainment staff was spectacular. Food was good for Cuba. Pizza was great. A la carte restaurants were good. Staff kept you entertained continuously. Didn't like the fact that people were smoking everywhere. Should have a smoking section. People who don"t smoke like us are enjoying the show or the piano bar and you have to leave because of all the smoke. Other than this it was fantastic. I will definitely return. One other think that was not great was the water pressure while taking a shower.

    Iberostar Laguna Azul
My teenage daughter and I spent 4 nights at this resort in April 2011. This was my 4th time in Varadero, first at this resort. This is my second stay at an Iberostar (first was Iberostar Varadero) and I am really impressed with their smart design and overall effort, with a few exceptions. Ok, so worst first: I got a bit of a tummy bug after my first meal. However, I am very susceptible to foodborne illness in spite of all the normal precautions so I came properly prepared with drugs and had no further issues. That being said, food safety standards are nonexistent at the beach buffet and you couldn't have paid me enough to eat there with all the flies crawling on everything. Also, this is a fairly new hotel so I was surprised that the room (18320) was so shabby. Both the safe and the patio door were broken and never fixed during our stay and there was a chronic infestation of tiny ants. The mattress on my bed had a very unpleasant odour. The bathroom was totally fine, and apart from the above issues, everything was clean. The process for booking a la carte restaurants is tedious and you're liable to not get what you want unless you either go right away to make a reservation or get a lucky cancellation. So that's the negative part of my review. The positive part is about the service, the Japanese and Italian restaurants, the awesome musicians, and the two quiet pools. We absolutely loved the pool at the east side of the resort and on one of the days we visited, there was practically nobody there. The beach is also very nice, although not as nice as the main Varadero beach. There were a few loudmouths at the resort but that's pretty typical wherever you go. There was a beach party instead of a show on the Tuesday night. The layout of the resort is quite compact and well-planned and the size is just right if you enjoy a smaller resort.

We had a wonderful time in Cuba. The weather was perfect but not the hotel. It was too busy. Too many people on the beach and around the pool. Too busy everywhere and impersonel. Hard to find a spot. The buffet was pretty to look at but not good at all. Coffee lovers; have an expresso because the the cafe con leche is disgusting. Restaurants à la carte ,ONLY one was good; the Japanese one. The others were aweful. The beach was pretty. The staff at the front desk was OK. You don't need to know Spanish at all. They all speak English and they prefer to speak this language whoever you are. This hotel is very clean and new. The service was excellent when you needed something in your room. The 10:00 shows were great with the talented musicians. I like the cuban music. From 9 to 10:00 very boring. A waste of time to watch the tourists on the stage doing silly things. The disco, I don't know I didn't go.

The resort is beautiful,it is laid out well.Room was Ok, bathroom was great! Pools were a little crowded but we spent most of our time on the beautiful beach! Although we couldn't swim because of the invasion of "jelly fish"- they were really Portuguese Man of War- By the next week they were all gone!Food was Ok..I am picky so I ate burgers hotdogs and pizza most of the week.. drinks were great! Service was better than places we have been to in Mexico! I would recommend this hotel to everyone!

The facilitis (pools, bars, buildings) might be close to five stars, but the content around it is not quite there. Helpful staff in the front desk, easy check-in. Drinks in the pianobar are good. The BAD part is in the buffet. Me and my girlfriend arrived in the afternoon, and went there for the dinner buffet. The staff there are horrible. They are over-friendly, giving you almost no time to eat - because you are answering on the "is everyhing ok" question every 20 second. Not from the same waiters, but ALL of them. In addition the waiters are obviously instructed to touch all the male guest, putting their arm around your shoulder when asking if you want more wine etc. (The house-wine is good though!). In addition, they came with a questionnare to the table on our first night, asking us to answer how satisfied we were with cleaning, service etc. They were making a big deal that we HAD to cross on "very satisfied" with the restarant service, almost hanging over your shoulder making sure you crossed that. Well, I did not - i just choosed "good" and explained that they are trying to hard and we just want our meal in peace and quite. For me it is no problem if they come and ask if the food etc. is ok - but not every second minute! And they should learn to have one waiter per area of tables. Well the result of me choosing "good" resulted in three of them standing at our table demanding to know why it was not good. After tryting to explain (again) why, and they refused to understand and started being big-mouthed I demonstratively tared the form apart and said I did not wanted to answer it at all then if i cannot choose the answers myself! The result was very poor service from that shift of waiters the rest of our stay! Kids in a kindergarten behave better than these folks. Well, and the food is not five star either. But - maybe as five-star as it gets on Cuba? It is ok - but not exciting. The pizzas are ok, and the selection is also good. But, most of it taste "nothing". Rooms are big and the bed is good, but not very good bedsheets (they felt wet, or sticky). Cleaning is NOT five star, but again - it is OK. You are walking in and out in slippers with salt and sand all day and only to change and shower - so the room I had no problem with. But far from five star cleaning and maintenance everywhere.

    Poor Telstar

    poor experience
Jan 25 to Feb 2 2016 Not a disaster but certainly not as described anywhere on the net. Probably a 2.5 star hotel at best. Staff is indifferent bordering on cold. Speaking of cold that is what you can expect of the shower. Hotel is in need of repairs. Our room was spacious, bed was acceptable, air conditioning noisy, fridge needed to be replaced, towels threadbare, closet door fell off. Food was plentiful, but unbelievably bland. The regular hotel coffee was so watered down it was undrinkable so you had to wait in line for cappuccino at the bar. What wasn't overcooked and mushy ( vegetables) was overcooked and tough ( beef ). Did not eat any shellfish so can't comment on that. Pool area was clean but very uncomfortable beach chairs and to get a chair pad shouldn't have been sucj an obstacle. The nightly entertainment was first class. What I took home from this experience was a mild case of stomach upset and a promise not to return to Iberostar Laguna Azul or any other Cuban resort.
