        “Horrible! ”
I am so glad that we only stayed one night here, and even that was too long in my opinion. I didn't know how to get here away as soon as possible. It was horrible! Very basic room (junior suite, space was the only good thing). Mannnnnny mosquito's!! Lousy food, lousy drinks, bad entertainment and even to get a normal glass of water from a bottle was not possible. Especially the food is below every level, so I ate nothing (dry bread). Many Cubans visit this place and maybe this is Cuban quality but really not suitable in my opinion for travelers who have seen any other place first.

“The worse hotel in cuba ”
This was my 15th trip to Cuba and this was by far the worse hotel. The service was terrible even with tips !!! We were ignored by the staff and I'm just shocked at their behavior since the other hotels had much better service. It was as if the they don"t care since they were watching the t.v. all the time. The worse was the snack bar; they would forget our order most of the time and if they didn't it would take 45 minutes to prepare it !!! I don't recommend this hotel to anyone and I hope they would change their philosophy to how to deal with tourists. The bank of the hotel was closed most of the time !!! The buffet choices were extremely limited ! By the way our reservation at the sea food restaurant was cancelled (reason not clear) !!!

        “Disappointed ”
This hotel is rated as a 3.5 star but I think it needs to be 2.5-3 star until improvements are made. Cons -patio door wouldn't lock, toilet leaked (only thing fixed during stay), room is minimalistic, food was gross and not much variety. Pros -all staff were awesome including the Doctor, they were working on improving the grounds, ie. beach snack shack, mini golf, painting to brighten up. Beach was nice but had lots of seaweed just wear watershoes, had paddleboats, kayaks, and snorkelling. Clear water and could go way out from shore and water not past your shoulders. Pool activities were fun, ie. learning different dances, darts, pool volleyball. Walking distance to a very good recommended restaurant. Overall, a relaxing, inexpensive vacation.

Food: 2.5/5. the same food and limited choices. Quality is good. Quantity is bad. Beach: 2/5. dirty with plastic, cigarette butts and seaweeds. But organised and much cleaner than outside of hotel zone Rooms/hotel territory: 4/5. for 3 star hotel it would exceed your expectation. normal rooms with tv and air conditioning and FREE safe locker. Room service good. Mosquitoes in July in the morning and sunset times. No ocean view rooms. the front houses face pile of sand before the ocean. Stuff: 4/5. them they very friendly and helpful. tip helps. Entertainment: 5/5. for 3 stars hotel is the best. every day. Kids shows. engaging team. all day activities organized. People from other hotels coming to join. they almost have a day care OUTside activities: 2/5. catamaran tour too expensive $72 and boring. Horse riding is ok but dont pay $15 because it costs $10. Diving and Snorkeling NO GOOD because of seaweeds Verdict: 3/5. solid 3 star hotel. 1 week = $500. Just for 1 time visit.

        “what a place! ”
the resort is ok but... the experience however priceless. My first and last visit to this beautiful and very poor country. the level of terrorism the Cubans suffer can only be compared to North Koreans. The local police are on a rampage of detaining the locals who do not live or work near the resorts. The arrests are apparently to reduce prostitiution in the area. In fact, the cops are themselves involved in it acting as self-appointed pimps. If a detainee does not buy herself out with money or sexual services they get a so-called "warning card". It is a form of a police record. More than 2 cards result in fines or incarceration. There are a lot of undercover agents, snitches etc and appears that everybody lives in fear including hotel managers. No wonder that the hotels are almost empty. It`s a shame that such a beautiful place as Santa Lucia is so mismanaged and full of corruption. the beaches are not kept up with the entry into the water full of rocks, weeds and garbage. There are no rules re water traffic so you can easily be injured or killed by boats or kitesurfers. What a disaster!!!

“Great time at the Gran Club Santa Lucia ”
We just returned yesterday from our one week vacation from Gran Club Santa Lucia and we had a wonderful time. After reading many reviews and finally going there myself I see why so many people fall in love with this place...and the answer is the staff. They are all helpful, friendly and willing to help whenever they can. Prior to going I emailed Yurina and sent in our room requests (as we have 4 children) and all of my requests were granted. We stayed in the 200 series of rooms and were glad we did. They are the junior suites which was located close to the pool and the stage. They are definately worth the upgrade as they not only have a sitting area, but a huge room with either one or two beds and a good size bathroom as well. The rooms are a little dated but super clean and you don't go on vacation to spend much time in your room anyway. As for food both myself and the kids thought that it was good. There was a variety of things to choose from such a rice, potatoes, fish, beef, pork, hamburgers, fries, fruit and of course deserts and found that everything we had was flavorful. In the mornings you can have your eggs made to specifications and during lunch and dinner there is a made to order pasta station which also had great pizza. And the bread was also to die for. We tried all 3 a-la-cartes (seafood, italian and the Cuban which is at lunch and found all to be good). We did also dine off resort at a local Cuban house for the lobster and it is definately something you don't want to miss. We did the horse and carriage ride not through the tour rep but through a local Cuban by the name of John Wayne who will approach you at the beach. They ask for $15.00 per person for a horse and carriage ride around town, to a nicer beach (Cocoa Beach) and a lobster dinner at their house. We did this and was very glad that we did. We ended up leaving the resort at 10:00am and returned at 3:00ish and of course asked for a deal since there was 6 of us and he did. The beach for us was one of the downfalls. We love Cuba for their beaches however did not really like this one. The sand is white and soft , however there are a lot of seaweeds (the paper thin time, not the slimey stuff) but the kids were not too fond of that. There were some spots in the ocean that were turquoise blue without the weeds and we stuck to those areas. Bonbon part of the animation team is the one that keeps the kids on their toes and the kids loved her. She did everything from morning to daytime activites and was also in charge of the kids show. 2 of my kids ages 5 and 8 had a great time with her and was very sad to leave. Thanks again Bonbon. The grounds were beautiful and you can see that they are trying to upgrade, repaint and fix whatever they can to make this place more beautiful than it already is. As tor the activites I found that they were lacking compared to other resorts that we have been to. They were usually late when it came to times set on the board for activites and also found that they didn't have too much going on. Could be that the resort seemed quite empty so not sure if it was just slow time. Also the evening shows were just ok as well. Had read many reviews about great shows but out of the 6 we seen they were only 2 choreographed shows (which were great) a fashion show and then 3 audience participation shows. So think that needs to be improved. However the choreographed shows that were put on were amazing. These people really are talented and should be commended for all the hard work that they do. All in all liked the resort, food was good, kids had a great time.. which is always a plus, pool was great, beach could have been better and better entertainment throughout the day would have been nice

        “Good value”
The value for your dollar was good. The staff were really wonderful. Although you don't go to Cuba for the food, my friends and I agreed there is such a thing as "decent" food in Cuba and we really didn't have that. We went next door to Brisas for a dinner one night and it was 5 times better than Gran Club - way more variety and more fresh veggies, etc. The beach was very nice, although it was a little tough on the feet getting into the water. We made sure one of us always had a role of toilet paper on hand, because you would often find yourself in a bathroom, with none. I would recommend you carry one, just so you're always prepared. The only bad thing I would say about this resort, is the fact that my swimsuit was stolen off my balcony the night before we left and I was not the only victim. Was it a staff member? Was it another vacationer? Was it someone who should not have been on the resort? I don't know. Just be sure NOT to leave your personal belongings outside unattended and then you'll be fine. All-in-all, great vacation, great staff. Be sure to go offsite for the lobster dinner - it was amazing. Good value for the dollar

“A lot of spit shining to do yet ”
Just returned from Gran Club and my reviews are mostly similar to others. I'm rating a three based on the following things: most of the washrooms on site have little to no soap or toilet paper. The a la carte had no soap or toilet paper both nights we were there and the pool bar washroom had soap one out of the seven days. I guess just go in the pool like everyone else? A lot of things are broken around the resort and have been for quite some time. A number of lights were either broken, tilted or just missing on the walking paths, benches busted for obviously a long time. Half of the sun huts at the beach had no palm tree leaf cover so couldn't be used. However, the week we were here they painted - and painted a lot throughout. On to the rest...the food was very much the same everyday, except the last day which was a special meal. Careful of the ham looking stuff that makes up a majority of the breakfast. It read "preserved meat". I read "spam". I have stayed at worse for food but definitely better as well. The room was a junior suite. All in working order, sort of. The A/C tried all week but struggled. Bring your own shampoo and shower gel. They provided one small sampler of each and was not replaced after it ran out day 2. The internet at the lobby was slow but worked at $6/hr. No complaints. The staff we found very friendly and efficient. The best we have seen in Cuba. The resort towels are a catastrophe. People stealing towels left right and center, especially on Tuesdays before everyone goes home. If you get resort beach towels and lose them its $25 CUCs each. Go and complain to the sunwing rep and their advice is to just pay the $25. Seems fishy. But on Tuesday there were a lot of upset guests. We brought our own towels thank goodness. Bring a large mug for your drinks. The small plastic cups they use are two big gulps of beer and done. Tip them and tip them all. Its only a few bucks but makes a big difference. Don't think it does? Walk into town on foot and look around. Its safe but a good reminder of life outside the pool and buffet. Would I go back? Likely. Would I recommend? Sure, but hold your towel tightly and bring your own cup, soap and toilet paper, everywhere.

“Done Them All and Gran Club Wins!”
I've been going to Cuba for over 35 years now and finally, in terms of Santa Lucia, have had the pleasure of staying at the Gran Club at the end of June, 2014. I have stayed at all of the other resorts on this beach, some more than once and I would say that the Gran Club wins by a big smidgeon, over the Caracol which would be my second choice, and here's why. First of all, the beach is similar no matter where you stay...in June the water was beautiful and clear and warm as a bath, totally my speed! We had a couple of windy days which affected the water by stirring up the seaweed but the beach itself was cleaned faithfully everyday so it mattered not. The beach is wonderful for walking distances and I found this time that when we strayed a bit from the hotels, that we were bothered a wee bit but very politely - you just have to say nicely No gracias and that is that, so no fears! The hotel was very well maintained, rooms extremely clean and large if you book a suite, which we had. There was a water glimpse but we didn't spend much time looking out anyway, rather spent time in the shade on the beach, of which there was lots since it was off season - no need to reserve your chairs! We were in the 200 block (room 216 second floor) which had been recommended on tripadvisor and yes, this block was close to everything. I didn't get a chance to see any of the other rooms although I did hear that the suites were the best in terms of size of room. There were also bungalows that were closer to the beach by maybe 50 yards, not much and I would have been interested in seeing one of these so if you are also interested, check out the travel forum for more info. I did meet people who had stayed in these and i believe these are "upgrades" so I don't know how much more it would cost you. The food was very good, although repetitive. It was well prepared but could have been a bit more hot. I really don't complain though because I am not in Cuba to eat the food, rather to enjoy the beach and the laid back life. I tried the seafood restaurant and was not impressed but it could have been a one off situation since a lot of people had said it was wonderful. I stuck mostly to the buffets and the snack bar by the beach - great location but sometimes ran out of food which again, didn't bother me since I just would then change my order to have whatever there was left. The staff at this resort was wonderful and accommodating, Raoul at the snack bar who tried his best with what he had on hand, and all of the animations staff who were dedicated to making everyone's life better, as well as the housekeeping staff who also kept our room spotless. You couldn't ask for more! So, why is this hotel, in my opinion, a bit better than all of the rest in Santa Lucia? I believe that the accommodations (suite) were better than my second best (Caracol), and as well, the food as well as the staff, a little more upscale. We met a lot of repeat clients, some who stay for a month at a time and have been going there for years. There have been some changes over the years such as in the number of Cubans who now are permitted to stay at resorts. I think this has bothered some tourists but honestly, this has never disturbed me! Where in heaven's name can you go to such a beautiful unspoiled country, with the most gorgeous beaches and accommodating resorts, at such incredible value, than CUBA? I dare you to tell me otherwise!

My husband and I went to Gran Club Santa Lucia from June 11 to 18. We absolutely fell in love with the staff :) Our junior suite #348 was located at the right spot, and was clean, functional shower etc. The food was waayy better than what we were expecting! The water was beautiful, and since we went during the low season, we were able to go on the pedal boat for hours at a time! The catamaran is also free. Shout out to the entertainers: Jadila, George, Julio, Rico, Solange, Ariel and many more! And to my favorite bartender: Leonarrrrddo :) We sure hope to see you guys soon!

“A good time at a fair price.. ”
I decided to try something new in my second trip to Santa Lucia beach with my family, so i booked Gran Club and i was told by the agent that, after the Brisas, the hotel was the most complete one? The territory is quite big but you can enjoy some walks around..Gardens are well attended and give the resort a real tropical view. Rooms: I had a junior suite (101) and my mom, aunt and cousin a Family junior suite (304)- guys, wonderful rooms, huge, very clean, and mine with direct sea view, plus both located less than 70 meters. Food is not the best of its features but it could be worst, and being honest I do not go to a hotel to eat, but to enjoy my staying and for a 100% satisfaction i need very little.. Remember it is a 3 stars hotel BUT i did enjoy all my meals with my family and friends, as I did the assistance of the waiters at the buffet restaurant. Very attentive and most of the time with a smile whilst serving you, which is terrific! There are two specialized restaurants (at least 2 were opened): Cuban and Italian. We tried the Cuban and was nice for a change, but our Canadian friends weren't that lucky and tried the italian one. They suggested us to rather go to the buffet..lol.. The lobby bar is a must, mainly if the bartender on duty is Mabel - a wonderful lady in her 50's, who's always eager to helping you enjoy a 100% tasty drink accompanied by her smile and jokes. The beach is not bad itself - sand strip huge, nice dunes, shallow water?.negative - seaweed. If you don't like the idea of walking on them, you better take some beach shoes with you. There were some mosquitoes too , but nothing to worry about, nevertheless I suggest you to take some repellent with you. It won't hurt!! Try some excursions to Colonial Camaguey, Playa Bonita, etc.. and hey (some very important tip: CATAMARAN IS FREE OF CHARGE..YOU JUST NEED TO GO AND BOOK THE DAY AND TIME YOU'D LIKE TO HAVE YOUR RIDE!!!) I hope you can enjoy your holidays there the way my family & I enjoyed our stay.. Be positive, successful holidays depend on you..not on the resort you choose..

        “Paradise at Dollarama prices ”
My wife and I stayed one week at the Gran Club Santa Lucia ( June 4- 11 ). It was our first time at a 3 star hotel and prepared ourselves for an adventure meaning that we were not expecting much for the price we paid. However,we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of hospitality, food, entertainment and living quarters. The staff at this hotel always served us with a smile. They want to make sure that you are completely satisfied with your visit, and that also includes gardeners such as Dieviel who will give you some aloe vera for sunburns or bring you a few mangos from his home for you to enjoy. The maid service is impeccable and our maid called Edenia always helped out with a great big smile while working in 30 degree temperature. Yurina is the PR person who is always willing to help out and did a great job accommodating us from beginning to end. These are the unique kinds of people that make your vacation a memorable one. Julio and Pluto were two awesome animators who motivate you to join into the daily activities. They get you to move off your lounge chair and exercise in the water or take dance lessons on the beach. These two animators are always present working 14 hour days and do so with a great big smile. It is very reassuring to be surrounded by such warm and welcoming personnel. Mirtha, the Sunwing representative will also assist you in purchasing excusions. We went horseback riding and had a great excursion at Coco Beach for a lobster dinner with a bonfire and dancing. What it comes down to is an incredible adventure among friendly people, sun, sand and the ocean. It was amazing how many repeat tourists we met, but now fully understand because we will soon return and become one of them. This 3 star resort is a quite a winner for us!!! The food was fine, but don?t expect lobster and shrimp at the price you paid. There is plenty of food at the buffet including a pasta / pizza station, a chicken/ fish / pork station , cold salads, hot dishes and vegetables. Breakfast is also great with a chef who will cook your omlette or eggs as you wish to have them done. The 3 a la carte restaurants were delicious and so was the one night pass to eat next door at the Brisas Hotel. There are drinks included with all your meals and a 24 hour coffee / alcohol bar opened at all times. We ate very well considering what we paid so there are no complaints to be made. There were plenty of beach chairs and pool chairs to choose among without reserving them at 6 in the morning. There were plenty of huts on the beach too for those who seek out the shade. The beach is long so walking was great however the water contains lots of seaweed in certain areas. The Gran Club is a hidden paradise that we discovered and are so very grateful!!! Pamela & Andy

My friend and I decided to return to Gran Club because we knew it was a "sure thing". We never went hungry, our beds were clean, the entire staff was lovely. However there are a few turnoffs.....1) Quebecois eating directly from the buffet!! Get a plate and take it to a table! 2) Gentleman from our flight (YYZ) was hit and killed by a boat. The military came in and and took his remains (everything was hush-hush). 3) prostitutes, prostitutes and more prostitutes....all with shameless Canadian men who treated them like garbage

Yes, the hotel is old - pealing paint, cracks in the concrete, loose tiles, old fashion TV... Aside of the everything was perfect. The food was above the Cuban average, the pool and the beach were great, the bars were available... but most important: THE ANIMATION WAS GREAT!!! I newer saw so much care for the children (day and evening). We'v been receiving much less in much more expensive hotels. Very dedicated evening spectacles and pool attractions gorgeous dancers. Really. We never had so much for our money.

        “" ABOVE AND BEYOND' ”
Just back from another fantastic week at Gran Club. Traveled May 6 to 13th, us, the kids, and extended family for a total of 13! Yes we are repeaters and have been to Gran Club over 20 times in the last 7 years. One of the young ladies in our group has a sever food allergy and was of great concern to the group. In advance of our trip I contacted Yurina, one of the PR people at Gran Club, to advise the resort of the situation. After a couple of emails back and forth we were assured that everything would be fine and appropriate precautions would be taken in regards to the food and preparation. Well let me tell you that the attention and care that was given to this potentially life threatening situation was amazing. Our every worry was put to rest after the first day. Yurina had spoken to the head chef and made arrangements for her meals to be prepared by only him in the pans etc that were brought with us. Each day Yurina, the young lady and her mother would talk with the chef to arrange meals for the day. The wait staff, even though different for each meal, was aware and handled the situation with great care and compassion. Only the chef would prepare and serve the meals to the young lady. We even attended an al acarte one night and the same care was given with the meal preparation. Once again with Yurina making all the arrangements. All of the cooks, the chefs, the wait staff and of course Yurina, went way " ABOVE AND BEYOND" our expectations for the care and professionalism that was shown. That's why we travel to Gran Club 3 times a year . We take our family, extended family and recommend it to our friends, In short Gran Club may be a 3* and the staff 5*. To all the staff at Gran club, reception, bartenders, animation and entertainment staff, waiters , gardeners, cooks and of course Yurina, thanks for another fantastic week. Will be back to see you soon.

“Beautiful resort with really friendly staff and locals ”
We visited this resort from April 2-9 and it was beautiful weather. No rain until we were heading home. We travelled through Sunwing and I recommend using their services. It was extemely cheap for myself, my husband and our son to go there all inclusive for one week. Julio runs Kids Club and he's amazing with children. They have a wonderful Kid's Club and daily and nightly entertainment. The food was good and different every night. My son and I are very picky but we had plenty of food to choose from for the week. We didn't really care for the ala cartes so we stuck to the buffet. We visited outside of the resort and met such friendly locals. We bought local crafts and also visited Coco Beach. We went to Miguel's house for a lobster feast and they made an amazing "Mohito" sauce. I've been trying to make it since coming back to Canada and haven't been able to.The beach was beautiful. The grounds were gorgeous. We will be going back to Cuba soon but since this was our first visit, we will visit other places before we settle but many of the travellers come back to the Gran Club because the atmosphere makes you feel like you're with family!

“"You Get What You Pay For" ”
Went to Gran Club, a couple of times through the years, most recently in March 2014 for March break. We had no real complaints, it isn't the lap of luxury by a long haul but if you get involved with the Cuban's you WILL have a good time. Enjoy the beach, it is beautiful, almost as good as Punta Cana DR. The food was good for Cuba, sometimes not warm enough, service was not so good, didn't seem to be much you could do about it either. I had to serve myself coffee a lot in the morning. The rooms were o.k., clean enough, some people saw roaches tho, we had a suite right on the beach so you have to expect some wildlife, they can't really control it. The best thing about this resort in the entertainment staff, and the night show, truly top notch for Cuba. They deserve kudos for sure, and also the guys running the horse back riding tours, awesome, authentic Cuban style dudes. The bars on the resort were fun too, friendly people. Last but not least the incredible Catamaran tour, affordable and a beautiful day sailing over to Bonita Beach, great trip indeed, good lunch as well, tons of fun. Also diving is outstanding for those who partake in the sport, it has I believe the 3rd largest reef in the world, something like that. Generally a relaxed beach trip, no fuss, gorgeous beach, friendly staff, locals and most tourists. And the tourists were mostly Canadian, a lot of French Canadian though (who everyone knows are rude), oddly enough met some American's also, interesting to see how they responded to Cuba. I recommend it for sure, the price simply can't be beat, even during high season it was extremely affordable.

        “Budget Family Getaway”
We travelled to this resort at the beginning of April. We were two families with 3 children in each family. Booked 3 rooms, 2 for the Adults and 1 for the kids to share. I emailed ahead to ask for rooms close to each other and and that is what we received. We booked Junior Suites and we were very happy we did, they were very close to everything. We have travelled to Cuba many times, I think this was our 6th trip and have never stayed at a 3 star. We chose this resort for its great value. I was concerned that we would not be happy with our decision, but we had a wonderful time. The animation staff was the friendliest we have ever encountered. The rooms were simple, but clean. We always had hot water for showers. I almost always wish I had brought my own pillow, but pillows seem to be very flat in Cuba. The food was adequate. There is a pasta station, grill station and buffet. We were always able to find something to eat. This wasn't the best food we have ever had in Cuba, but was not the worst. Although the service in the buffet was the best we have ever had, so that was wonderful. The beach snack bar is open at night, but doesn't open until 11 pm. I think it was just burgers, hot dogs and fries at night. We spend most mornings at the beach and then the afternoons at the pool. The beach is really wide and the sand is white and soft. Its great for throwing around a ball or frisbee. There is lots of space without interfering with the sunbathers! Now I was really disappointed at first by the ocean. There is a lot of sea grass in the water. I have been to Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo, which both have amazing white sand and blue waters, so this was an adjustment! Although after getting my snorkelling mask on and venturing out to explore, I found that within the seagrass there are lots of little critters to see!! I found many little conches and fish. And even say a stingray!! We took the paddle boat out to where the dark seagrass meets the sand further out and there were little coral gardens that had quite a few neat little fish and pretty coral. So overall we ended up really enjoying the ocean and snorkelled every day. We took a trip by horse and buggy to Coco beach and really enjoyed our day there. Again we snorkelled and saw lionfish and scorpion fish. We enjoyed seeing the flamingos on the way to Coco Beach and also had a chicken lunch in one of the Cuban homes in the fishing village at Coco beach. We negotiated a price of $35 pesos per family ($10 for adults and $5 for kids). We had a choice of lobster, fish or chicken. We had chicken and it was really good. It was great for our kids to have an authentic Cuban experience off the resort. The pool is fine. It is not very big, but it is a small resort. There were always lots of pool loungers so there was never trouble finding a spot. There were a lot of kids at the resort when we were there, so I tried to avoid going in the pool as much as possible. Lots of little children in diapers etc. and a swim up bar! Some days the water seemed to get a bit cloudy and there was no way I was going in. But my kids went in and there were no ear infections etc, so obviously the chemicals were doing their job! I saw them adding chemicals and cleaning the pool each morning, so they maintained it well. The pool was quite busy on the weekends with many Cuban families visiting for the day. The Jr Suites are really large. There are two separate areas, one with beds and the other with a pull out couch and sitting area. These were the largest room we have ever stayed in, and it was nice having the extra space. The maids did a great job and rooms were always clean. Yes, the faucet in the bathroom was leaky, the shower head had seen better days, and sometimes the toilet had its issues. But for us these are things that can easily be overlooked for the price we paid to bring our family here!! So all this being said I would return to this resort and recommend this resort to a family on a budget looking for a nice getaway. Our kids actually loved it, said it was their favourite resort so far! Much of this is thanks to the amazing staff at the resort! Only downside was the 1 and 1/2 hour drive from the resort. But we were prepared and just enjoyed the view!

        “Best time ever!!!! ”
Ok, it is a 3 star resort and you don't get all the bells and whistles associated with a 5 star resort (ie. coffee maker in room and waiters tending to your every whim, stocked mini fridge blah blah blah) The things people get stressed over I really don't understand! The food is fine and yes things are often repeated, but there is at least one new thing to try every meal period. The drinks are fine and the usual assortment of selections, like rum punch, piña coladas, cuba libres etc A lot of people on trip adviser recommended getting a junior suite, but we had room 233, one row back from the beach and it was a standard room and more than big enough! The bathroom was small but the rest of the room was quite big. Junior suites must be huge. We had a couch, with a coffee table, and a small 2 seat dining set . There is no dressers per se to unpack but we just kept it all in our suitcases. The room is clean and beds very comfortable. Pool is great! No complaints at all there. We never had any trouble getting a lounge chair and had no trouble with our towels. We exchanged our towels for clean ones every day and just make sure you get your ticket back from towel guy since you need it for check out. A la cartes are decent. We tried the seafood and the cuban, nothing negative to say. We walked to the commercial centre , not much there but a convenience type store , souvenir shop, one restaurant and a bank. We checked out caracal and brisas, gran club appeared to have the nicest pool. Just from walking around the resorts brisas is probably of a slightly higher caliber but not enough to justify a much bigger price tag. Mirtha , the Sunwing rep at gran club great at her job and very knowledgable. We booked the lobster dinner with dance lessons, bonfire, drinks at coco beach and a day excursion called last day in cameguey. The coco beach dinner was fun but understand that the lobster that you expect and what you get are different. You don't get garlic butter (which we didn't expect), and food in cuba is generally quite overcooked. This was no exception. The "last day in Cameguey "was a great idea . When you have to leave the resort at 3:30 to be at the airport at 5pm, you are sitting around all day waiting to leave. This tour you leave at 9am and you are busy all day enjoying the culture, sites, and food. A great use of the last day. We went to a local food market, a local artists who created pottery and painting, a description of a lot of sites while travelling in the bus and also got out to walk around revolution square, shopping, and a real cuban lunch, and listen to a wonderful cuban music group. The staff is friendly , no issues, didn't have to wait a long time for drinks and service was the same no matter if you tipped or not . Once they get to know you they remember what you drink etc. in the buffet restaurant the senior staff are slower to give basic service and hang around service areas...younger staff seem more eager to please. We didn't see much of the shows at night but heard they work hard to put on a good show. During the day the animation team try hard to keep kids and adults busy and have fun. No pressure if you are not interested. Can't think of much else to say but that we are taking our kids next year. As another reviewer said, a diamond in the rough. Excellent value for your money.

“I have found my perfect budget get-away - A lot of bang for your buck at this diamond in the rough. ”
First off, this was my first time to a resort that was lower than 4 star and my first time to Cuba as well. I must say, I was VERY impressed. The staff is friendly, the food is good and they provide lots of excursion options. The resort is well kept. The gardeners are out every morning raking out the gardens and cleaning up trash. *This resort is definitely geared towards FAMILIES and COUPLES.* We stayed in a Junior Suite *room 1222* (no upgrade) with two double beds and we were happy (I was traveling with my mother). (*Note: We did hear from other travelers that if you wanted a "King Size" bed, you would have to push the two double beds together.) The only thing I could suggest for the rooms is bring a pillow if you are fussy. The pillows provided are quite firm. Hot water, room service everyday and the TV had HBO. (not that we spent a lot of time watching it.) The Food Buffet breakfast - Egg station where there were fresh cracked omelets or eggs to your liking. As for the buffet, fresh fruit, bacon, ham scrambled eggs, toast etc. Buffet lunch - It was usually the same everyday. Cuban rice, plain rice, veg, different type of pork, fresh fruit, salads etc. At the carving station there was always something new. There was also a pasta station with a choice of tomato sauce (NOT spaghetti sauce) and a white sauce. Buffet dinner - Same as above with some variation during the week. One night there was shepherds pie. Another night there was roast beef (which was AMAZING). Seafood options as well as the carving station where one night there was turkey. -If you are not fussy, you will not be disappointed with the food.- The only time I had trouble eating was at the snack bar, but there are french fries which are good. The hamburger was not to my liking. We ate at all the a la cartes that week and we were not disappointed. Italian, seafood, and Cuban lunch. All were very tasty. We did not make it to the Brisas for dinner but the other guests said it was good. The pool area is nice. Lots of loungers, swim up bar with friendly staff and coffee bar. The only time we found it busy was on the weekends when the locals come for a visit. You will have no trouble finding a spot on the beach. As for the quality of the beach, I am not a beach person but it was fairly clean. Watch out for sand spurs. I highly recommend going on the Coco Beach excursion. It is $35CUC and well worth it. Unlimited drinks with a seafood dinner. Choice of lobster, shrimp, fish or all of the above. Very generous portions. If you are looking for a good spot to buy souvenirs/shop, I suggest that you not stay at this resort. Since you are so far away from the Airport/main village (2 hour drive) there is not a lot of shopping. You can still buy your rum or cigars from the Gift Shoppe on the resort or a short walk to the "Commercial Center" where there is a bank, and a few gift shops/cigar shops. There are so many good things to say about this resort but all and all, I had a great time at Gran Club. If I am ever on a tight budget again, I will definitely be returning!

“Trip from hell made bearable!!! ”
Thomas, Jose, Yurina, Maricella, Rene, Miguel ... I owe them and so many others a huge hug of appreciation and gratitude. Indeed, most important and not to be forgotten are Dr. Beatrice Perez and Nurse Haydi, for it is very possible they saved my life. Here's the short version: I returned to Canada on April 6th 2014 after spending 2 weeks with my fiance once again at Gran Club. During the course of the 4th day in Cuba it became very apparent that I was sick and growing sicker by the hour. I purchased over-the-counter antibiotics, which are available in low doses, hoping that if it were bacterial, that should treat it. Within 2 hours I was in Dr. Perez's office, high dose antibiotics being administered intravenously by hand. My fever had soared to over 104F. I was given pain killer and sedative injections, sent back to my room and told to return in a few hours. Dr. Perez stayed on the resort throughout the night to care for me and in the early morning determined that my situation was growing critical. One phone call to a friend and colleague and I was on my way by taxi, also arranged by the doctor, to see a specialist in Camaguey. I underwent a small but important surgical procedure immediately upon my arrival in the city. It was this procedure that stopped the highly toxic bacteria in my system from spreading and becoming life threatening. I was strongly advised by the specialist to go to the hospital, probably for several days, so that I could continue with the intravenous medications and remain under observation. I chose instead to return to the resort, where I had become comfortable and developed a relationship of trust and respect with the medical staff there. In total I spent the remaining 10 days of my vacation either in my room or laying on a lounger on my balcony, shaded and quiet, under doctor's orders. Dr. Beatrice, as I came to call her, checked on me every 8 hours and continued to administer the medications I needed. Dr. Beatrice did not make the final call as to whether I was stable enough to travel home until only hours before departure time. She and her nurse cared for me like I were their own family. They were amazing and I can't thank them enough. As for the rest of the staff, each in their own way contributed to my comfort and well being while I was sick. They bent the rules and allowed my fiance to borrow cutlery etc. for our room because I could not eat in the dining room. Jose was adamant that if I asked for a drink on my way to or from the doctor's office that it was alcohol free because "alcohol would not mix very well with the sedatives and pain killers". lol Of course I already knew that but I know it made him feel good to know he was helping to take care of me so I played along. Every staff member my fiance encountered each day as he moved about the resort would enquire after me and send their regards. They would ask of him if there was anything we needed or anything they could do to help us.Their care and concern was genuine and much appreciated. It made me feel good to know so many people cared about my well being. A special thank you to our housekeeper, Edina, for constantly having to clean the room around me as I either lay sleeping or just lounging, unable to leave the room long enough for her to work in peace. She deserves a special thank you for changing my sheets even if it was not a "clean sheet day" when my fever was high and my sheets were damp from the effects. While yes, it was the trip from hell, it was the staff and the care and concern they all showed for me, that made my sick days bearable. THE ONE THING MOST IMPORTANT TO NOTE HERE IS THE BACTERIAL INFECTION I WAS FIGHTING HAD BEEN CONTRACTED HERE IN CANADA, long before I departed for Cuba. Indeed, during the surgical procedure in Camaguey it was found that the cause of the infection was due to a dental procedure done here in Canada, incorrectly, and left to fester and absess over time. Will I return??? You betcha!!! In fact I have a date with Dr. Beatrice for coffee and I don't like to stand a date up! :)

        “amazing stay ”
We returned last wednesday from this hotel. We indeed had a very beautiful stay; the staff and people were very nice and helpful. This is not the first time we have returned to this hotel and certainly not the last. It was alot of fun and the weather, was a huge plus for my family and myself. Another family had joined us as well, and needless to say our friends kids were somehow slightly wounded in the pool (maybe from a sharp object) and a lifeguard named Armando, was there to help the kids and make sure everything was alright. He brought them polysporin, and anything they needed in order to ensure they would be okay. Very helpful and accommodating. When we travel to this resort; it is a relief along with being comfortable to know that all of the staff is loving and welcoming. We will absolutely 100% return to Gran Club, Santa Lucia :).

“A Grand Time at the Gran Club - Updated review ”
Booked this through Sunwing for Jan. 22 to Feb. 5, 2014. It was the best deal for Santa Lucia for the fortnight we needed. (and have been to the Brisas & Mayanabo already) The resort came with many very good recommendations which made the choice easy. Had a lovely time and would go back for sure. The overall experience was pretty much the same for other Cuban holidays. The food, the rooms, the beach, etc. was as expected. That being said, let's break it down Old School...... The Food: Not surprisingly it was comprised of the usual suspects, pork, fish, ham, beef in various configurations. The standard accompaniments of eggs, salads, beans, rice, cheese and veg were always present. You would not go hungry unless afflicted by dietary needs or plain fussiness. The buffet ran a bit hot & cold. Literally. Some food trays were nicely warm or hot (one spot was always nuclear meltdown hot) or on the chilly side. I assume it was a serving table issue. The soup pot (always marked "vegetable when often had meat protein contained, ie: chicken noodle) always began hot and cooled as dinner time wore on. The salad fixings always appeared to be fresh and varied. Only mayo, vinegar or oil for dressing. Maybe it was "do-it-yourself"? The hot grill was a better bet, often sliced to order, as much as you liked. The chef was really friendly and spoke pretty good English, deserved all the 1 Peso tips he got. The "Show Cooking" corner was always pasta (spaghetti or rigatoni) with white or red sauce, cheese, ham, tomatoes or veg to add as you liked and quick-cooked right in front of you. Pizza of a mostly cheese type was also offered. (boy, the warming tray these sat on was again of the thermo-nuclear version) The service staff was a bit all over the place. Some attentive, quick to take drink orders, re-set tables, clear plates and some were more lackadaisical. No doubt who would get the tips. Funny thing, spoons were never set on the tables, you had to ask or go and fetch from the waiters service tables. Same with sugar in the morning. The Italian/Seafood a la carte restaurant was always fully booked and worth the effort for a nice different "dinner out". Heard the Cuban restaurant was either closed or not worth it. The Room: We had a Jr. Suite (#227) up near the beach which was worth the extra charge. Lots of space, a decent bathroom with a real large shower (ie: 2 person), 2 double beds (should have requested a 1 King room), closet was "adequate", but we had 2 weeks of clothing so a bit tight and available the drawer space (3 around the room) didn't take all the overflow. The power was 110v/60hz with many outlets. However, this room was cursed. The TV (LG 24") was a bit fuzzy (a bad cable signal perhaps?), the remote was for an RCA so did not work. The AC control was missing so we could not change the settings. Luckily, it was set to a speed and temp that was good for running all the time. The door lock or door card failed right after the "bellhop" brought us in the first time. Trip # 1 to the front desk. Later on, the card "died" after a week. Trip # 2 to the front desk to re-programme for week 2. Then the lock would not always "re-lock" after opening. Trip # 3 to fix the card again. (it was not a card problem as it turned out) For the final 3 days there, the lock totally died (battery issue?) and we could not secure the room at all. Even the maid was pissed off that it was happening as she could not lock the room either. Between myself, the maid and Mirtha the Sunwing rep, the front desk was told many times, some in writing, about the lock. Nothing was ever done and may still be broken for the next guests. Only remembering from other resorts did we know to put the door card into the "slot" by the door to activate the AC. What we did not know and was not told, it also activated the full 220v circuit to run the bathroom hairdryer as well. Found that out by accident, even after a complaint about a dead hairdryer to the front desk. Best of all, a "stripe card" is not required, the final few days I stuck in a used-up Internet access card. The weirdest thing was the safe. (free included) Ours was fairly new and while it is electronic, they provide no batteries to operate. They do give you a key which I take to be the maintenance master key and it goes in behind a cover on the front. (found this by being nosy) Others seemed to be older key-only style, so key-only for all was the resort mandate. Just one more thing to carry about and maybe lose? Duh..... The Beach: As expected for Playa Santa Lucia, flat and wide (except for the Brisas to the east) so lots of room for everybody, nice and sandy except near the water where the usual north-side ground up coral bits lurk, so a bit rough in spots, the usual seaweed issues (but cleaned by a tractor every day). The Gran Club, as the so-called lowest end hotel (by price) has the best lounges (pool area as well) of all 4 resorts here, even the high-end Brisas next door. Mostly all brand new and very nice. The beach bar served routine drinks & beer and offered a bit of a fruit & fish buffet along with fresh cooked hamburgers, hot dogs and ham & cheese "panini" sandwiches. Sadly, it's a common problem in Cuba of nobody taking charge (Hello? Fidel?...) and making picking up all the washed-up-from-the-sea or tourist-dropped detritus a national sport. Having to walk among bottle tops, shells, rocks, plastic bags, straws & cups, etc. is a real annoyance. Seriously? I'm sure that many young persons would probably love to "pick garbage" for a daily go at the buffet bar as payment. The Gran Club does have far fewer "shady spots" than the other resorts and while on the north side of the island, the alignment is more east-west so the sun rises over the water meaning more hours of no shade from the palm trees. The Entertainment: The usual Cuban dance groups and musicians. All were very good, but after a while it does become repetitive, but they do try hard and seem to have a 2-week cycle for the long stay guests. The Kids Club (run by the great Bon-Bon and Julio) evening pre-show was often the best part. Some nights were guest participation with the usual hilarious results. The daytime event games were darts, ring toss, frisbee toss, bingo, etc, and usually ended with a bottle of rum for the winner. Pool volleyball and aqua-fit classes were popular. The Rest: The 3 bars were adequate and most of the bar staff were pleasant and competent. Seems to be a lack of staff and wait-times could be a bother. Was served pool-bar drinks by a helpful life-guard more than once. A coffee bar was located by the pool and the lobby bar has an Italian espresso maker as well. The grounds were nicely kept by the team of hardworking gardeners, but again a neglect to pick up odd trash was disappointing. The gym was a joke, and the beauty salon (hair and massage place) was often closed it seemed. Lobby was the usual affair, couches & tables around, but as both the Toronto & Montreal flights are scheduled very close together, (really Sunwing?) it gets very crowded and chaotic on Wednesdays. There is a medical office and pharmacy (with a really helpful clerk) along with the expected tour/rep desks for Sungwing, Holasun, Nekker (Germany) and the hire car desk. You'll find a group of cats hanging about the buffet door waiting for food treats to come out. They are not overly friendly, but won't attack you. Overall, I still recommend the Gran Club Santa Lucia as a good family oriented, mid-budget resort. Just need the controlling Groupo Cubanacan to get their act together a bit more, but I do commend them for finally dealing with the problem of way too many plastic cups being used creating huge waste. Smart tourists take a nice travel cup/mug which also cuts down on repeated bars trips. There are pictures, but the "Add A Photo" button is not working, sorry. They would have helped provide context for the all comments above. (you can contact me for them by e-mail) Even better, here is the a video version (with captions) that puts some life into the static prose. It's been edited for length to only highlight the important bits. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IE6SpLq14A Hope this gives a better insight as a potential choice for a sand & sun get-a-way.

        Very good Very good

        “Very good resort overall ”
After reviewing lots of reviews of different Cuban resorts, I finally settled on the Grand Club and was very glad I did. First, the good points ?. 1) Rooms - The rooms I was in - two junior suites; one for a week and one for a night (after our flight got cancelled!) were excellent. Though fairly simple, they were spacious, quiet, and VERY clean. The TV was a bit older and only got 4 or 5 English channels (one of which was HBO :-), but this was enough since I wasn't in my room that much. There were no problems whatsoever with the A/C or shower and the beds were very comfortable. 2) Amenities & Facilities - The swimming pool, games room, bars, etc. were all good for a Cuban 3 1/2 star resort, and, as long as you don't expect 5-star quality, you shouldn't be too disappointed. I'm into weight training, so I made reasonably good use of the gym, despite the fact that it was quite basic and somewhat dilapidated. Still managed to get in decent workouts though. 3) Staff - The front desk staff were very good; both helpful and professional. The hotel manager (who's name I forget) was top notch; extremely courteous and professional. The dining room staff were hit and miss; with most being somewhat inattentive (unless you were a regular/repeat guest). 4) Beach - One of the great things about this resort. Clean and spacious with sufficient chairs (the hotel was 1/2 ~ 2/3 full when I was there) and non-intrusive vendors. 5) The resort guests - in a word --> Awesome! In all my travels, I've never met such a warm and friendly group of people. Due to there being so many repeat customers, it really felt like a home away from home. Thanks everyone!! And now, the one caveat ? The food. I am not a fussy eater by any stretch of the imagination and am usually fine with standard Cuban fare ?.. as long as it is changed up from time to time. With the exception of the final two meals of the trip, the food - while half-decent and totally edible - was quite limited and pretty much the same every day. That being said, they do have three a-la-carte restaurants, which were all decent, though none were really that noteworthy. **Tip** --> Eat at the Brisas resort next door. Even though I think you are only allowed one meal there, several of the guests ate their regularly. Both the quality and variety are markedly better. As mentioned above, despite the mediocre food, overall this was a great resort, and I definitely hope to return again!

“Successful Trip to the Gran Club! ”
We just returned from a trip to the Gran Club from March 12 to March 19. We flew with Sunwing out of Montreal. The check in at the Montreal airport was smooth and our flight left only a bit late despite the snow and de-icing! Camaguey Airport: Slow. This seems to be the norm for vacation in Cuba. Everything seems to move a lot slower. Two flights (one from Montreal, and one from Toronto) fly in and out at around the same time. It took forever to get through immigration on the way into the country, and then it took an hour and a half to check into our flight leaving the country. I was beyond frustrated with butting passengers. That being said, the Camaguey Airport is nice and big with an outside balcony! Hotel Check In: Crazy. Something like 4 buses arrived at the hotel at the same time. It took almost an hour to check in. We took it in stride. It was nice and warm and the bar in the lobby kept us supplied with drinks. Room: We upgraded to a junior suite. COMPLETELY worth it. We had two double beds we just pushed together. There was a couch with a bed that pulled out, a coffee table, big closet, vanity, and a nice bathroom. We watched a movie a couple of nights when we were exhausted. We got CTV and HBO. The balcony was beautiful and our room (234) was close to everything It also had a bit of an ocean view. Our maid was amazing. The room was spotless the entire week. No complaints about the room. Our safe's key pad wasn't working. We simply picked up the key for it from the lobby. Pool/Beach: Great! We never had to get there super early in the morning to grab a chair. I read a review with someone complaining about the seaweed. It really wasn't that bad. There were lots of turquoise areas, and the sand was great. The hotel had tons of chairs and sun shelters, but some of them were in BAD shape. They didn't provide much shade. We walked up the beach many times. The "commercial center" was up the road. It had a bank, restaurants, and some gift shops. The towels were in okay shape, but were often challenging to switch as they weren't available until much later in the day. Food: The food was pretty standard for Cuba. The breakfasts were good. There was an omelet station I used every day. Lot's of fresh fruit and veggies. The bread was also very fresh. The Cuban rice was delicious, as well as the ice cream. We both loved the pasta station at the buffet! We did all three a la cartes (Italian, Cuban, seafood). The Italian was delicious!! Service: To be honest, the service was a bit lacking in the buffet and with some of the bar tenders. As mentioned above, the maid was amazing. The front desk staff was always helpful, and there were some bar tenders who we really enjoyed. At the buffet in the morning, it was basically serve yourself. They just cleared the tables. At lunch and dinner we often had trouble finding someone to serve us a drink, I often had to grab my own utensils at the serving stations many times. Keep in mind they only have basic drinks at the buffet and at the a la cartes. This includes water, wines, and 4 types of pop. Excursions: We didn't do any! We literally went for a week of rest and relaxation. We read our books and enjoyed the weather. That being said, the man on the beach who did the horse back riding was SO friendly. I think he said it was $10 a person for a ride with him. I heard people saying it was great. Other Comments: *If you go towards the tennis court there is a flamingo that lives in a giant pen. I have no idea who owned him, but he was beautiful. *Water is on sale at the hotel gift shop for $1.50. They recommend you don't drink the water in the rooms. *The animation team is energetic and there are always things going on. We had a great time watching many of the activities at the pool. *There are lots of cats that hang out at the resort. Even with everyone feeding them they are still extremely skinny (ie: worms). Some also have horrible eye infections. If you think of bringing a de-worming pill it would be VERY helpful. There is one cat who is missing most of her tails (we called her Miss. Stubs). She was a beautiful cat I would have loved to take home. She was very pregnant at the time. *There is an amazing violin player at the resort. There are also other musicians. Tip them!! They really are amazingly talented and wonderful people. Overall, we think we got excellent value for money at this resort. We had a wonderful time and would go back in an instant. The area is beautiful, the employees were friendly, and the other guests were great. Go to Cuba with an open mind and you will enjoy yourself greatly!

        “Again and Again”
It is now 7 years old I go to this hotel, one or two times per year. I love this place for people and you feel at home. The food is good for a 3.5 star. There is always pasta and pizza. Meat or fish cooked on the grill is always good. Never been sick from the food. The animation is just WOW. The children are supervised by a dynamic team. The beach is beautiful yes with algae but no baffle for a spot in the morning. The pool is very nice too. To all my trips to Gran Club, I met many travelers like me who fell in love with the place and especially the people. And for new travelers it is very rare that people are unhappy. It is important not to forget that Cuba is a safe place for a family trip. You can and you must out of the hotel and go to see the local people and you will be welcome among them. For room I highly recommend the junior suites. You know when you return to the same place and you meet the same passengers every year is a good sign. Bon Voyage.

“3 stars resort with 5+ stars staff ”
Just got back from and amazing 2 weeks vacation with my husband and 3 kids, myself 31, husband 41, kids 7-5-4.... Gran Club is more than what you expect for the price you pay. During our stay we had the pleasure to meet the wonderful people who work at this resort and who made us experience a vacation we wont forget anytime soon. If you plan on taking your children on vacation it is the place to be, the amazing Bonbon (Yordanka) will surely entertain them and you will go back home huming chichihuahua for weeks! As for your own entertainment, Danny, Pluto, Tico and many others will make you move, play and laugh the whole time. Finaly the beautiful dancers and band members are certainly worthy of a more glamerous surroundings, but they still perform brilliantly no matter how small the audience may be. Obviously the resort is not perfect and a I tend to agree with the comments regarding the cleanliness of the beach but it does not outweigh the good things it has to offer. Concerning the food, it was more than adequate for my taste not complaints at all in that departement although don't expect much from the a la carte ( dont forget how much you paid and that you are not on vacation for the food or else go to France or Italy). Also, if you want to visit the area do not be scared to ask the staff, they are absolutely trustworthy and they know their stuff very well. You can aslo safely order lobster from the beach as they are fresh and absolutely delicious ( ask around for Orlando). Last and not least please TIP, we have too often seen people leaving the dining table without leaving some much as one pesos for the waiters. Please be generous it wont change much for you and the people work long hours to serve you.

“Unforgettable vacation at Gran Club! ”
I think I've found the resort that I will be visiting year after year in Cuba. As other reviewers have said, Gran Club is such a hidden gem. The food is better than we expected but what really makes this resort great is the staff. All of the staff was so friendly and genuinely welcoming. We especially enjoyed getting to know the bartenders at the lobby bar: Jose, Marco, and Lolita! Ask for Spanish lessons from Jose, he's very patient and happy to chat. There was a pretty good mix of different people at the resort, including some families, but also lots of younger people that were happy to party most nights. On Saturday nights the resorts do a combined beach party, called the White Party, which was definitely a highlight of the trip! There are also other discos down the road that have dancing all night and are welcoming to tourists. Our favourite excursion was the lobster dinner at Coco Beach. You get a delicious dinner and a dance lesson with Anita Cha Cha Cha! They also give you coco locos that are included in the excursion price and are coconuts filled with rum, delicious! We also went horseback riding around Santa Lucia for 10CUCs a person. If you walk towards Brisas along the beach from Gran Club there is a scuba diving centre and also some Cubans that run the horseback riding. Ask for Dilen, who speaks good English and was more than happy to take us all around the area and answer our questions. The beach itself has quite a lot of seaweed but there are some surprisingly great areas of coral with really nice snorkelling. If you bring out a banana a huge variety of fish will swarm around you, it's really cool. Overall we really enjoyed Gran Club and are already planning our return trip!

        “We'll be back ”
2nd trip to this resort. Absolutely love it. All the staff are amazing especially the Animation team. They even remembered us from a year ago. Pluto Julio and Danny, great guys. We missed BonBon this time. Seriously I have been to many different resorts all over Cuba, and this is by far the best. We stayed in a Junior Suite this time and Definitely recommend this upgrade(even better when it's a free upgrade). Every member of the staff at Gran Club is happy, and smiling all the time. They actually look pleased to have you there, which is a great feeling. There are quite a lot of kitty cats that hang out outside the buffet. We took cat treats from the dollar store and made lots of furry friends too. I really don't know why this hotel is rated 4 out of 4 hotels in Santa Lucia , but if that keeps the price down , it works in our favour. You will not be disappointed with this resort. We will definitely be back again.

        “May 2014- beyond expectations ”
Hi all, This was my 1st visit to Gran Club, Santa Lucia, but definitely not my last! My GF had been here numerous times in the past 12 yrs. I was warned that it is in essence a 3 star hotel and you get what you pay for....but I was pleasantly surprised. Upon arriving and given our room, we were a bit disappointed as we had initially sent a request for a Junior suite upgrade. The hotel management upon recognizing my GF, immediately upgraded us even further to a single private bungalow. Room 103. It was awesome! The hotel staff from the cleaners to the gardeners to the bar staff all remembered my GF. She is rather unforgettable in any event! :) What really blew me away at this resort was the Entertainment team. I have been to many resorts in the Caribbean, some 5 stars as well and have NEVER experienced talent such as I witnessed! The dancers are all incredible and put in countless hours practicing and have an amazing choreographer making it all happen. Every show in the evening was extremely entertaining! The House Band, Covarrubias Son is a group of 5 incredible artists with a beautiful Cuban sound.(We bought their CD) The activity team led by Pluto & Danny are so personable they make everyone want to get involved and I dont tend to involve myself in any of the activities. I found myself going to almost every activity. Although we didnt come with any children, we did observe Julio with groups of children most of the week and he was absolutely amazing with all of them! He takes the worry away from parents who just want to enjoy themselves as well. I didnt mention that I was also planning on proposing to my GF while here as it has a special place in her heart. When I mentioned this to Edmundo(GM), he assured me he would do his best to make it as memorable as possible. We had made arrangements through one of the dancers to have a seafood dinner at his friends house. This was when and where it happened. So, I advised Edmundo of my plan and when we returned, there were flowers all over the bed, a bottle of champagne and a poem I wrote for her quite some time ago that Edmundo took the time and typed up for me, leaving that on the bed for her as well. I will never forget this man who went out of his way to make that day a VERY special occasion for the both of us! He has also invited us back for a ceremony on the beach which we will likely do after our ceremony at home. The beach- Excellent! The food- ok It is Cuba after all. The room- Excellent! The weather- Amazing! The entertainment- Awesome! The management- Very accommodating & warm! The one thing I do appreciate about this area is that it may be a very poor region but the staff are so humble, honest and warm hearted you want get to know them. They don't expect handouts unlike many other places I've been to in Cuba. I was happy to give away and leave behind many of our items I didnt think I'd part with as it made us happier to see them happy! All the reviews say this place is a 3 star, but the way everyone gets treated, the amazing staff, animacion team, dancers, musicians and management makes this resort a 5 star as far as I see it! I have made friends here and now it is a bit more memorable for the both of us. We will definitely be returning. Oh.....she did say "YES" by the way!

        “THE BEST PLACE EVER”
This was my fifth trip to cuba and my fourth trip to Gran Club and it was amazing, as per usual. The resort which I have been to many times before has been upgraded, many fixes around the resort and it has only gotten better since the last time I was there. The food, which for cuba, was very good. There was always a lot of variety, including a large selection of fruits and vegetables for those who don't eat meat. The room we stayed in, which was a junior suite, was very nice. Nice beds, a clean bathroom and a very very cold airconditioner. The service we received while at this hotel exceeded all of my expectations, regardless of whether I was at the reception desk, any of the bars, the restaurants or from any of the staff, I was always provided with whatever I needed. The main reason this hotel is the best ever is simply because of the Animation Staff. The entertainment staff go above and beyond and really are the best part of this resort. Not only do they welcome everyone with open arms, they treat you like family and that makes spending time in a foreign place that much easier. The dancers, Ariel, Jorge, Solang, Rafael, Llyoda, Poll, Judy and Juliar are absolutely amazing at what they do and they are definitely some of the best people I have ever met. And the entertainment staff of Pluto, Tiko, Danny, BonBon, Yadira, Julio are the most kindhearted, caring and wonderful people at the resort. The staff at Gran Club are the reason I have returned so many times and they're the reason I will keep returning to this resort. Once again, Gran Club has exceeded my expectations of a cuba vacation and I will definitely be returning in the near future because of the amazing experiences I had during this trip, and all the ones before this one.

“5th time and it just keeps getting better ”
Let me start by saying that this was my 5th trip to Gran Club and again was not disappointed. We went from March 26th-April 2nd. First and for most the Staff of Gran Club from the gardeners, the water sports guys, maids, front desk, wait staff, bartenders, and all the Entertainment staff are second to none, whether it's your first or have been there multiple times you get treated like family. Over the past year or so they have really started renovating and it's exciting to see what they have done every time we go back. The new management have really stepped up. You have to remember this is a third world country so it does take time because not everything is accessible right away, but they are finally getting it done. Gran Club is a great resort if you are just going to relax or if you like to go go go and get involved. So many excursions to do, beach activities in the morning and pool and poolside activities in the afternoon. The nightly shows start with a kids show first then go into the more adult shows with dancing to the house band in between the two. For the kids, there is a kids club everyday that starts around 10 and I believe it goes to 3 with Bon Bon and Julio, who are absolutely amazing. They have activities planned all day for the kids and love every minute of it. the rest of the entertainment staff (Yadira, Dani, Pluto, Tico, Virgin, Jorge, Ariel, Pol, Raphael and all of the rest of the dancers) try to get you involved with everything for beach volleyball, aqua aerobics, to Spanish lessons, water polo and even baseball a couple days of your vacation. The food our last couple visits have been great. We can always find something to eat from fresh fruit and eggs your way at breakfast to a pasta station at dinner. The beach bar is finished and fully up and running with the 24hr snack bar there as well, the only downfall to it being at the beach at night is that it tends to get a little more windy so it sometimes makes it hard to sit there and eat if it cools down. They have hamburgers, hotdogs, grilled ham and cheese sandwiches, fries and during the day some fresh fruits and veggies. For the first time we actually did a couple a la carts, the Cuban (available at lunch) was amazing and so much food so go hungry. The seafood one was pretty good as well. We didn't get a chance to try the Italian but have heard it's great. If you have a chance to go off resort to a Cuban families house for a Lobster dinner try it you wont regret it. Ask around and people can point you in the right direction. Also in the Commercial Center there is a restaurant I believe called Luna Mar, you can also sit at the little bar there have a Mojito and order an amazing pizza with whatever toppings you would like and not expensive at all. If your looking for night life, you typically have to go off resort, even with the renovation of the disco on resort most people don't go like they use to so they don't bother opening it. Saturday night they have a white beach party at the Commercial Center with music, dancing, drinks and even some vendors. Gives you a chance to mingle with the locals. The rooms can be a little outdated but are really clean and really how much more do you need, I know I don't spend much time in my room, if I was going to do that I would just stay home. I do recommend upgrading to a Jr. suite though, it's closer to everything around the resort. If you like massages try one you will love that, she even added the hot stone to your hour long massage. Please when you go to this little piece of heaven, go with an open mind and you will love it as much as we do. Looking forward to going back in October for some R&R, sun, sand, drinks and even more memories.

        “Love this Place ”
I'm somewhat late (August 2013) with my review but I must say that I just love this place and the people. I was there with my husband and my three teenagers. The animators (Dani, Julio, Tico. George just to name a few (all were amazing) men and women from entertainment to general staff were awesome. They always involved us in everything they were doing, even if they hadn't even seen us that day they would be calling out our names to play some sort of game and or learn the spanish, to learning how to dance. I have been to this resort three times so far and each and every time it gets better and better. As I stated the staff are amazing and even remember your names within what feels like minutes. They make you feel so comfortable. My teens were always involved in some sort of game or learning something. The staff would even wake up the teens to go play volleyball (this was great LOL). For us the food was fine (no complaints) and the cleanliness of the room and the place in general was great. We can't wait to go back soon!!!! Love you guys!!!!!

        “Fantastic Resort! ”
We stayed at the Gran Club Santa Lucia from March 26 - April 2, 2014. We traveled as two couples from Montreal (drove there from Ottawa, since it's cheaper than flying out of YOW). Awesome flight times (1030am out of Montreal, and landed back in Montreal at 9pm on our return). We've been to Cuba 7 times before, never to this resort though, so here are our thoughts: PRO's - Huge rooms, renovated bungalows on the beach side of the resort (we stayed in rooms 208 and 2011). One room was ground floor which was what they asked for, and ours was second floor which has a lovely view of the ocean... didn't pay more for upgraded rooms, they just gave us standard rooms and they rocked. Not sure about other side of resort- we heard they weren't as nice... - Lots of activities, amazing staff and beautiful grounds (very well maintained) - Bars make fancier drinks than other resorts I've been to, wider selection - NO BUGS AT ALL! YAY! - Best food we've had... always a pasta bar (standard most places), but also a grill that had roast beef, pork chops, turkey, etc. It was so yummy! - A la carte restaurants were all delicious - Several day trip options, although we chose not to do any sine we've done them all before - Faster internet than other resorts and only 6 CUC/hour which is less than I've paid elsewhere - Free bikes you can use whenever you want to ride into town or around the area - POOL was super clean and perfect temperature, not loads of shade but it's so nice - AMAZING nightly entertainment and shows, never seen so many people come to watch the shows before CON's - Towel service was not open for very long (more inconvenient, but not a deal breaker) - Leaving the resort to go to airport was a bit stressful because there was only one crowd that arrived and left together (plus a few small groups who showed up during the week but mostly Wed-Wed travelers) so it was very pushy getting a spot on the first of two buses to go to airport --> not resorts fault, just a comment - Beach bar was a bit disappointing but the buffet made up for it - Beach itself was pretty seaweed filled when it was windy (but again, that's just the way it is on the Atlantic side of Cuba vs Carribean) so it'll be that way most places along this side Hope this helps! I've added some photos, we were really happy and are already planning our trip back! I've never returned to a resort before, but this place rocked.

        “Great Vacation!!! ”
First of all, I would like to thank all of the staff for their hard work and making our trip even more memorable. The week of April 2-9 I travelled with my son (3 year old) and my friend with her two children (4 and 6). I must say that our trip was better than expected. There was lots to do and the staff were always around greeting the children and offering them fun activities to do. Below is a list of pros and cons based on our experience. Although the cons are not negative if you come with an open mind and make the best of it. Staff The staff was incredible and went above and beyond to make you feel welcomed, safe and tried their best to make you laugh. The gardeners kept the grounds looking fantastic at all times. The gardeners offered to bring you coconuts and Aloe Vera plants if they thought you were burned or just in general if you wanted. They also educated you on how to use the plant such as: let the yellow liquid seep out of the plant for 15 minutes before you apply aloe to your skin. The entertainment staff was fantastic with the kids. They did everything they can to get them involved during the children shows and also during the day. Especially during peak hours of the day they had plenty of activities and fun games to play in the shaded area for kids and adults. Nightly Entertainment Both children and adult shows were fantastic and funny. The staff always encouraged and tried their best to get all the children involved. Junior Sweet Room Pros: We requested for a room on the second floor due to bugs or anything else that may crawl in while sliding doors are open. Our rooms were very large with a separate living room. There were sliding doors in the living room and by the beds with a very large balcony. Next time I will most likely get a normal room as we were never in our room. The staff kept our room spotless and made beautiful towel arts on our bed. -Everything was working great and the water pressure was good too. -On our last day she offered to keep our rooms open because we had young children. This way we can shower and get ready before we left the resort (no one had to wait as the next guest were arriving late at night. Her offer was sweet to keep our rooms open and for her to clean later). -Us and many others received safety box key the next morning after breakfast. Cons: -No screen doors so we were not able to keep our balcony sliding door open at night. -We did not have any English channels but that didn't bother us as we only slept at night. Again this is something you can ask help if needed. My friend next door had plenty of English channels. -No water for mini fridge. We had to get at the bar or buy a bottle of water and refill it throughout the vacation. I purchased two one for going out in the day and the other to stay in the fridge for over night. You can also bring your own water bottles or thermal mugs for drinks. Restaurants Pros: We always found something to eat and the food was good. Whenever I asked for something, someone always came back to help. We were never the kind to sit around and wait, because our kids were always on the go so we would help ourselves for most of the stuff (drinks, cutlery, napkins etc..). There was always someone to come and clean up. There was always fresh fruit and vegetables, different types of meat, rice, breads, desserts and plenty for kids. Cons: There was no juice in the evening besides types of sodas or pop for kids. Breakfast there is all kinds of juice. Tips for young children not drinking pop - fill up a water bottle of juice and keep in refrigerator until dinner, unless you head out to the bars. Again this is nothing that would ruin my trip. We never gone thirsty. There is always something and if not at that location then forsure at another. Bars Always were very aware of who came and served us as fast as they can. Never was ignored tip or no tip they were ready to help. Great at remembering what we liked and what our children liked. Beach Pros: Beautiful water and white soft sand. There are many spots that are clear of seaweed. Cons: A lot of seaweed but that's natural in the ocean. The staff tried their best to clear it off the shore every morning. Was not a problem and the kids loved stepping on it (wasn't the typical sticky slimy seaweed very paper like feeling). Pool Pros: Always kept clean and the water was nice and cool (never too hot or cold). Water level in the children section was perfect not to deep and not to shallow, as well with the adult section of the pool. I am very short and the water was up to my neck haha. I was able to get to the swim up bar with my child in my hands (I know how to swim, but it was a plus I was able to walk across.) Over all we had a fantastic vacation with great weather. I would definitely return to this resort. Thank you to all the staff who also went above and beyond to make our vacation greater than it already has.

        “Best resort so far. ”
I've been to Cuba a few times looking for that perfect resort I can return to. I think I have found it with this one. The staff were all awesome and attentive, the resort was clean, beach was beautiful (and I've seen some horrible Cuban beaches). I am going back soon and am counting the days. The bad reviews I have read don't seem to be fair. The food at Gran Club was very good-- much better than other places I have been. The rooms were nicer than expected, no bugs, no stains, which is all I can ask for. I think this resort should be higher than a 3.5 star personally. Don't be afraid to explore outside the resort, the locals are very nice and welcoming. The best real Cuban food is found off resort at the restaurants. So much to see and do. And finally a warning to all those who haven't been to Cuba, don't be fussy, don't be picky, be relaxed and enjoy yourself and you will have a great time. It's easy to find faults everywhere but I've seen many picky people let little things ruin their trips.

“Once again pleased to see improvements! ”
I want to start off by saying that this was my 7th visit to Gran Club. I was pleasantly surprised to see the continued improvements that are being made by the new management that has been running this resort for the past year! The beach bar is now completely up and running. The 24hr snack bar is located at the beach bar. The snack bar offers ham and cheese sandwiches, burgers, hotdogs, fries and some fresh veggies and fruit. They usually have a house made salsa type vinegarette that they put on your hotdog or hamburgers.... So good! They have continued to paint the buildings and you can see they are trying to replant some of the gardens in front of some rooms that had been neglected. They have put a fence up around Pucho (resident flamingo) so that he isn't wandering around the resort anymore. It's for his own safety as he only has one wing and can't get away from certain situations easy enough. They have painted the inside of the fountains and ponds and they were being filled with water on our last day there. Haven't seen these up and running in years! They have also made a break on the beach for sand erosion issues. With this they have put in four wooden walkways to the beach. And for the water problem mentioned in previous reviews we DID NOT have our water turned off once while there. But as you drive down the road you can see that there have been repairs being made to the waterline that runs along the road. That may have been the cause of the water issues? Please remember you are in a third world country where getting what they need for the repairs can take years to get! We tried the Cuban (lunch availability only) restaurant as well as the seafood restaurant. I have to say I enjoyed the Cuban the best. While down there we were celebrating a friends birthday... One of the managers approached us and arranged a reservation as well as supplied us with a cake. It was a very nice gesture on their part! The real reason we keep coming back to this resort is the staff! From the waiters to gardeners to bartenders to lifeguards to all the entertainment staff... They are all amazing! Pol, Jorge, Raphael, Ariel, Pluto, Tico, Danny, Virgin and Yadira the place would not be the same without you! Thank you all for the hospitality and friendship you show us time after time!

        “Best Resort Vacation EVER!”
I have to start off by saying I was somewhat reluctant to go to this resort, because its not a five star. The thing that got me there was going with someone who had been there twice before. Well, we had the most amazing week ever. People were so incredibly friendly; the place was clean and well maintained, the food was good. The only one area for improvement would be to update the rooms a bit and deal with water pressure (in the toilet) issues. Other than that, not a single thing to complain about. I am planning to go back with my kids very soon.

I want to begin by saying that this was our 5th time back and as usual the time spent was amazing. The resort itself needs more maintenance, but overall stay was good.. There was some water shortage issues, but that did not 'dry out' the fantastic time we spent with some wonderful staff at Gran Club. To name few... always helping hand from Armando, smiley faces from Sonia, Thomas (coffee bar), Jose the bartender and of course all of the entertainers - Dani, Jorge, Ariel, Virgin, Yadira, Bon Bon, Rafael, Pol, Julio, China, Mario, Edmundo. I have been to many resorts in Cuba, from Varadero to Santiago De Cuba and have been visiting the island for 16 years, but this place feels like home thanks to the staff.

        “Awesome ”
This was not our first time to this resort and definitely not the last. We came back this Wednesday and can't wait to go again. The kids had so much fun , they even learned how to swim thanks to Armando, the lifeguard. He was very nice with them, fun and games and a little bit of learning and now they almost know how to swim and are not afraid of the water. Thank you Armando and lifeguard staff. But thank you everybody, the entire staff and entertainment was awesome. So, Gran Club we are coming back. I hope to see you all soon

        best of the best beaches
At Santa Lucía beach, some meters away from the sea. Very near several hotels and restaurants of the tourist area.

Never go on holidays during March break!
I wrote a review immediately upon returning from our fourth trip to the Blau, 15 – 22 March, but my computer glitched when I went to send it and it disappeared into cyber space. So here I am on a rainy afternoon in July planning our fifth trip to the Blau for November and reading the reviews on Debbie's has prompted me to send my review. Blau Colonial: Everyone on our flight was staying at the Blau and we were on the last of the five buses to arrive at the resort. Although there was complaining from some of the guests about the line up, the majority took it in stride, grabbed a drink and made friends in line as we moved along rather nicely. The week prior was March break and of the 700 plus students registered on the Cayo Coco hotel strip, 140 stayed at the Blau. It wouldn’t have mattered if there was no line up when we checked in because the resort staff was swept off their feet trying to clean up the carnage left behind by Canada’s future university grads and subsequently the rooms weren’t ready yet. Jose’ Luise, one of the management staff, thought our room was ready and took us there personally once we’d finished checking in. When we opened the door, there was broken glass everywhere and a trail of blood from the room into the washroom area were the towels had obviously been used for first aid treatment. Jose’ was upset and embarrassed but so was I at the thought of my fellow countrymen obviously too drunk to care. I spoke with a Metropolitan London Police Officer (Bobby) the next day who had spent the first of his two weeks at the resort during the March break. He related a week reminiscent of soccer hooliganism. It commenced when the first bus arrived from the airport and one of the male student was trying to retrieve his luggage but was so intoxicated, he wiped out, hit his head on the curb and had to be medivaced to the hospital in Moron. Note to self…never go on holidays during March break! So…room not ready…change into bathing suit in lobby washroom, grab a drink and hit the beach! Yes, we’re on vacation.
