The airport has a drawing of Che Guevara on one of its outside walls. Pope John Paul II flew to this airport during his last visit to Cuba, flying round-trip between here and José Martí International Airport in Havana. Likewise, Pope Benedict XVI, during the second papal visit to Cuba, flew here for Mass and other activities, from his visit to León and Guanajuato in Mexico, before moving on to Havana. The airport is basically a turbo-prop centre. Nevertheless, Jet aircraft also fly to this airport. Most commercial flights into SCU are domestic, but there are about twenty international flights each week; while these international flights are done mostly by domestic airlines, the international routes have nevertheless awakened the interest of some foreign airlines that might open flights into this airport in the future. “Very very poor ! ”
Went here last year and still cannot get over how bad this place is. Check in was a nightmare so was the room and especially the food and cheap booze ,it was worse than I thought it could be ,been to Varadero it was ok at best but this place is the absolute worst .People complain about the bus ride from airport to pig pen but I found this to be the highlite of our trip.Do not get the pizza ,we watched the black Cuban guy making it ,perspiration running down and off his arms ,off his neck face ,man it was bad and then take out a rag from his pocket and wipe his arms face neck & stick rag back in pocket and repeat this a few times with no water to wash his hand.UNBELEIVABLE and sickening. But if you enjoy this type of behaviour to save a few bucks ,go for it.

        “Pretty terrible.”
Firstly the bus ride was terrible. One of my kids was sick from the plane, and on the 1.5 hour bus ride the bus driver drove like a mad man. He almost got in 2 accidents and it was so bumpy and fast, it made us all feel sick, and was very hard on my child. We got to the resort, and the staff greeted us with orange juice while we waited to be checked in, which was a nice touch. We were so excited to be at the beach, that once we checked in, we dropped all our bags into the room and then ran to the beach. One of my kids ran into the water, and we were never told that there is a massive sea urchin problem, literally thousands upon thousands. Within 3 seconds of running into the ocean, he stepped onto a sea urchin. We then had to spend the next two hours with a nurse pulling out spines from his feet. Great start to the vacation. The food was terrible. CABBAGE CABBAGE CABBAGE. There's no variety and lots of birds, dogs and cats everywhere. The staff we friendly and seemed to try as hard as they could, but most of the resort is very decrepit. 3/4 of us got a stomach bug while were there. The excursions they offered were pretty decent, minus the fact that I was kicked by a runaway horse, but again not the hotels fault in any way. I would recommend only doing a half day horse back riding tour if youre interested in that. If you are looking for the bare minimum - food, alcohol, pool and beach, at a low price, then take a chance, but we had a horrible vacation. Stomach sick children along with one who couldnt walk for a few days due to a sea urchin, did not make for a good experience.

        “Hotel Carisol. A disappointment. ”
Hotel Club Amigo Carisol. A disappointment. I visited Cuba 3 years in a row and have to say that my choice this year has been a let down. First the positive. Accommodation in a 2 stories attractive building (500 block) decorated with large river stones imbedded in its walls was very good. We were on the second floor and the high 16 ft ceiling gave the room an airy feel. We did spend some time in the room during the hottest parts of the day, so that was important. Hotel Carisol is still being updated and our building was freshly painted. Some bungalows near the ocean were boarded up or in process being renovated. The large bedroom, fridge, bathroom and balcony was more than satisfactory. I would design the building so, that the balcony face the ocean view, but they forgot the ask me, or somebody was reading the blueprint upside down. The AC was a bit noisy, but not overly so. It did not bother us much. Our friend in different room had to use his maintenance skills to quiet down their AC. The TV has even CTV from Canada, so you can laugh at the sub-zero temperatures back home. The second week, we could however only see the news not hear it. The sound was gone. (Only CTV!) The grounds are well maintained. We have occasionally supplied our gardener with beer and sandwich, as he was working hard in the Cuban heat.. There was more employees in this resort, then I have seen in others, but many were probably just temporary to help with the buildings renovations. The Corales hotel was closed the week we arrived, but reopened the second week. The beach was a bit rough. If you want a sandy beach, this coast is not for you. There are many stones and corals on the beach, so shoes are recommended in the ocean or even just walking. Some people may have been bothered by the sea weeds, but these are soft to walk on. The problem may however be the black sea urchins, attached to rocks under the surface. There are no motor boats, (except one, for snorkeling excursion) no ski-doo?s, no water skiing. You can borrow kayak, sail boat or paddle boats. The entertainment group try their best. The dancers and singers came from Santiago and did not stay in the hotel. The shows were varied, well choreographed. The was only a DJ during the entertainment hour. Once a week, the was also an aquatic group performing in the pool. An excellent show. There were 3 live bands alternating playing at dinner. They also just came to play from Santiago and left the resort after the dinner was over. The disco was a disappointment. Mainly because nobody was dancing. People just came to drink and smoke some more. This resort had more Cubans guests than other resorts, I have been to. Even they were not dancing. I never had the patience to stay to see, if the atmosphere changes later in the evening. Given the average age (old) of tourist, I doubt. Food was OK at the buffet restaurant. Plenty of fish, pork, chicken and fruit. They have also a grill. Best I liked the ox tail, beef tongue). The pineapple was available only occasionally, and was usually good. Papaya, guava was always good. The nice lady at fruit station made also smoothies to order. Mandarins were really aromatic, full of seed, but worth it. The cakes (just sugar, no taste) were forgettable, cookies were perfect for coffee. Coffee was excellent in the coffee bars. Just do not be late, the replenishment is spotty, so you may end up without any veggies or ice cream (Ok, but too sweet for my taste). We ate twice at the 'a la cart' restaurant. The seafood was better than the Creole. You select from menu in the morning, when you reserve your seat! No chance to change your mind.... ;-) Major complain! Smoking is permitted everywhere, EVEN in the dining area. The people who come there are mostly smokers. They are also ignorant and selfish bunch. The only thing people do in this place is smoke, drink and eat. The non-smokers come once, and probably never again! The management is to stupid to see the trend. They may make fun of a drunken, loud, smoking Canadian in the comedy sketch of evening entertainment, but that is the class of people, which this resort attract. COUNT ME OUT. This "Natural" selection is really bringing this resort to the gutter!!! Dogs in the dining room is not my idea of fine dining. Yes, the guests are feeding the dogs, but it is management responsibility to see that the dogs are gone. The dogs are not there to guard the resort, so I see no reason that they are there. The same people, who are feeding the dogs would not even bring a sandwich to the workers in the resort. Most of them have no access to the food the tourist are eating. There were several couples of decades in age difference. Contrary to some reviewers, I have no issue with the old guys bringing young Cubans girls to the resort. Let them have a bit of excitement, but I can understand that someone may take an offence to this practice. (I was there with my Canadian wife). There is a free bus to Santiago once a week. Great service, but book early. Somebody goofed on our trip and reserved 24 seat bus, but put 40 people on a list. A disappointment for many. We were the lucky ones.

        “Never ever again ”
Let me tell you the plain truth. This place will be disappointing for sure. I'm not one of those people who went to cuba for the first time and set the bar too high or had an assumption Cuban hotels would be somewhat like home. I've been to cuba quite a few times and this place is out of excuses. First of all I've now learned I'm more of a isolated area kind of guy. I've also learned that in cuba three stars is not enough. I don't need a huge beach, I don't need 5 or more pools, burin do need upkeep, maintained, clean and cared for on vacation. This doesn't meet one of those. I thought I walked into an abandoned hotel. First the room was awful. We had conjoined motel rooms. First the mirrors on the closets were shattered with glass on the floor. The shower heads were broken in one room sitting on the ground. There was mould in both rooms half way up the walls. The sliding doors going outside would not close at all so the room was full of bugs. I mean full; ceiling, ground, walls, shower etc.. We demanded a new room so they moved us to one of the newer condos on the beach which were very nice. So the restaurants were another issue. Restaurant on the beach had hamburgers and banana chips which were very good. The Italian restaurant always ran out of food which was annoying. The buffet was omg disappointing. I remind you I've been to cuba multiple times and I understand the food isn't the most amazing but this was pitiful. The buffet was a small table, with no kind of heating. One other small table for bread, and sometimes a spot where someone was cooking for you. The buffet food always got cold, there was never a big selection and it was the exact same every night. The cook cooking stuff to order would always give you small amounts, and would leave every 19 minutes or so to do I don't know what. Then, came in the biggest issue, he would always put food away for his buddies. The next issue. I understand these people don't make a lot, there families often need food, but I also have to remember we paid for this. This place was treated like the local hangout. A lot of family and friends would show up, eat a lot I mean a lot of the food especially the fresh cooked stuff, then fill bags under the table and bring home. These guys would show up with a family of ten. I'm all about mixing it up at dinner. That's cool, but it's way over done and they are not taking care of the guests. Then these guys would hang out during the day taking your goggles, floaters and leaving with your personal belongings. I have never had anything stolen in cuba till I was at this place. Then all of a sudden these older singleness were walking around with these Cuban ladies all over them. It was very uncomfortable with your kids being with you. Then I had an issue with the bar giving my children (7&10) alcohol. The other kids were walking around with flavoured colas and my kids wanted some. So they went up with them. Later on the day I watched my kids go up. I thought they were using coloured dyes or something but no! The guys were using caracao. I told the bar tender not to do that. They don't know better they are kids and he said, " hey it's ok. It's only 10% alcohol" I said no it's not ok do not give my kids alcohol again. So besides the uncleanliness, poor maintenance, the nightclub feel, the escorts, the theft, and it being the local hangout there are a couple things that are outbof their control but quickly told me mainland is not for me. There are a lot if wild animals around. You walk to the room and you have to walk around cow patties on the paths, goat droppings, dog droppings, and horse droppings. And no one cleans it. Damaged sidewalks and paths make them unusable. Had a family of goats on our porch. Had wild hoses on the path in the dark on the way to the room getting really irritated. Had to wait till it left. Dogs are costa try running. Through the restaurant while you eat. Etc. I will one, never go here agin. Two, never go under 4.5 stars agin, and three always go somewhere quaint, isolated, and being an island of the island where there aren't too many locals and no people wondering in using the hot as a personal hang out.

It was just ok! The bus ride to the resort was long but really cool to see the area. Check in took forever, very unorganized. Rooms are decent, cleaning ladies are great so friendly! Pools were beautiful, beach was ok. Food was (as expected) not good. There were a few things daily that were decent.. like bread lol. It also took forever to get a glass of water! Waitresses were a little rude about as well. The "disco" was a little tent on the beach. Meh. Lots of older people, not many people our age (we're 24 and 28). Overall I wouldn't go back, I'd like to try something new.

Went to this hotel with my family and 2 other families. Great food, snorkeling, staff were friendly and helpful. Hire one of the 1950's taxis to take you into San Diego, interesting town and very safe. Hotel room was a bit run down and hotel grounds are a bit unkempt but all in all a great holiday.

“Amazing place!! visit January 19 - 25th and returned back to this resort April 21-27 th ”
This resort is great, they offer many activities such as spanish lessons dance lessons pool activities all water things to do just not motorized.i enjoyed the catamaran ($60) tour which is pretty much the whole day u can drink on the boat they stop for snorkeling and take u into Santiago de cuba u have lunch at the dock, the guide shows u around u can do a little shopping and then get on a bus back to the resort. The night entertainment is ok the comedy and the pool show was the best. The food was yummy but I would go to the A La Carte instead of the buffet just because it feels like more of a sit down dinner u can get pork beef chicken or seafood all inclusive u must book the morning of at the front desk of the hotel by 10 am I was never up early enough to do it but was at the resort with early birds :). When I returned to the resort in April I was with a girlfriend we are both 26, we went on the history tour into Santiago de cuba it's about half the day and u get free time to walk around by ur self. I would like to add that the first time I went I was with a group of 14 ppl that ranged in age from 20 to 65 the second time there was just two of us. If u want to enjoy ur self on vacation with rum sun and friends this resort is for u, if u want to complain and put ur nose in the air about everything that might not seem 5 star to u then I recommend going some where else. I will be returning to this resort hands down !!!

        Entertainment
The usual selection....Spanish lessons, dancing, beach volleyball, etc. I didn't bother. Sailing is another story. I love it, and with the exception of the first couple of days when it was extremely windy and red flags were flying, I went out every day. Because the wind was high most of the week, I had some very memorable sailing.....fast, wet, fun!! Snorkelling, as I have mentioned, is also very good, and possible even on windy days, since the reef keeps the wave action to a minimum. Kite boarders also find the lack of big waves attractive. There were several enjoying the wind, which made swimming and snorkelling a bit hazardous as you had to keep a look out for them. There are decent bicycles if you want to ride to Coco Beach or around Santa Lucia......or just down the road to the other hotels. It's always interesting to check out the local crafts for sale, which vary somewhat from resort to resort. There seem to be no issues with Security as far as visiting other resorts....I had no problem walking around Brisas to meet a friend.

        Several Tour available
There are several available. Camaguey is one destination. You can go for the whole day for 45 CUC including your lunch. You can also do the "last day" tour, which gives you a look at the city on your way to the airport and also includes lunch, priced at 29 CUC. Catamaran Playa Bonita for 55 CUC which includes snorkelling, lunch and a open bar. Also, for those who only wish to snorkel, the Coral tour is priced at 25 CUC and just takes you out to the reef. There is a lobster dinner at Coco Beach available for 25 CUC. There is deep sea fishing available as well.

Caracol is a wonderful little hotel
Santa Lucia beach is protected by a coral reef about a mile offshore. The water near the beach has a lot of sea grass, which is constantly washing in, making it a full time job to clean the beach. The resorts do their best, but there is usually some debris along the beach. That said, it is a very long beach with firm sand for walking. Because the sea grass can hide shells and bits of coral, footwear is a good idea. If you are barefoot, you need to pay attention. There are a few palapas for shade, and less trees since the hurricane, but I had no problem finding a chair. For swimming, water shoes will guard against coral and the occasional sea urchin. For snorkelling, the beach is very good! There is a patch of coral and rocks about 300 meters straight out in front of Caracol, and there are lots of fish to be seen there. I notice that people have been feeding them and they are becoming habituated to this, which is unfortunate. You may see lots of fish when you feed them, but you will miss out on the rare, interesting ones. Besides, it is not good for the fish or the environment. Please don't do it.
