“I would not recommend this resort ”
I will first start off by stating , I am not a picky person when it comes accommodations but I do expect some basics especially since I am paying for the room. This is my fourth time to Holguin and probably my 8th trip throughout Cuba so I already know what to expect. Check in - uneventful and unfriendly Room- 1st room appeared decent except the air conditioning did not work, it was on the ground floor and patio door did not lock. I called in to the front desk and requested another room which they said there was no other room available. They told me they would send someone to look into it. I waited over 30 mins and no one showed up. Seeing as it was midnight, I walked back to the front desk to see what was going on and magically another room was available. I went to the second room- patio door lock worked, so I kept this room. When I went to go take a shower, there was cockroach about 1-2 inches in size in the shower; after disposing of it, I realized the hot water did not work. Bed was very worn. Air conditioning worked excepted it was very noisy. Food- repetitive but edible Pool - decent Beach- FYI Guardalavaca beach is a public beach which I did not mind but some might Conclusion - If you want to stay in Guardalavaca, stay at the hotel beside - Brisas; I walked over and toured around the resort and it appeared much better. I also spoke to other people who stayed there and they liked it a lot. I'm glad other people had favorable reviews of this resort however I cannot say the same. I would recommend spending a little more money and staying at a different resort. I stayed at Blau Costa Verde the last time I was in Holguin and it was significantly better.

      “Good value for your money”
This was my second stay at Club Amigo Guardalalavaca Atlantco. Have to say that the food deteriorated since last time. Speciality restaurants serve about the same quality of food that is being served in main cafeteria. I was served instead of steak three pieces of very tuff beef. Lobster was just boiled; no garnish of any kind; melted butter was just that. No garlic at all. Have to say that the service was outstanding. My chambermaid was likewise outstanding. One good tip if you have an early flight: Put your swimming gear in your carry on. My room wasn't ready till 3:30 PM, and I arrived at 12:30. The beach is excellent. Yes I will go back.

“Not My First Rodeo 7th trip to CA ”
Club Amigo GUARDALAVACA ?Trip # 7 .... Not My First Rodeo I travelled to Club Amigo from Nov 1st to 8th alone this trip. But you are never alone at Club Amigo as there are so many return guests that you feel like you are part of the Club Amigo Family. I met old and new friends and this is why I return to this resort . We have been to many Caribbean resorts including Jamaica, St. Lucia, Mexico, Costa Rica, St. Martin, Antigua and Santa Lucia, Cayo Coco , and we still love to come back to CA . . Summary ? for those of you that like the coles notes version. Do your research and know what to expect! This is a 3 star resort with 5 star staff and beach that will keep you coming back. The pluses are: access to 24 hr food and drink, the beach, and friendly staff and the wide range of pools, restaurants, bars, the activities and entertainment staff and clean rooms. In low season the barracks ( standard rooms ) and bungalows were closed. If you booked these rooms you were upgraded when you arrived. There were still lots of options for dining and relaxing at one of 3 pools .Some of the newer renos include Ashely Café, new swim up bar at bungalows, upgrading snack bar at Hotel and adding a tea room in front lobby the week I was there. There is also new furniture in the front lobby. Please read on for more details. I?ll start with some tips to ensure you are prepared for your stay at CA. TIP#1 ? Bring an insulated mug so your drinks stay cold and covered TIP #2 ? Bring your own towels as the towel service may run out or you may need one when they are closed. This was not the case this trip as it was low season. TIP# 3 ? Bring a couple spare rolls of toilet paper and always carry it with you when using public washrooms. This way you will not be caught off guard. This includes at the airport. TIP #4 ? Bring a flashlight. It is difficult to see at night as paths are not well lit and rooms are not well marked TIP # 5 ? If you arrive with a bus load, be prepared to wait your turn. They will get you checked in but it does take some time as everything is done manually. Go to the bar and get a drink until the line goes down. Check in this time around with quick and painless!! TIP # 6 ? They have access to internet at the Atlántico Lobby but it is slow and costs $6.00 an hr. You will spend most of that time waiting and all the terminals are not the same speed. Do not plan on spending a lot of time online. They do not have wi fi TIP # 7 ? You will get better service if you tip right off the bat. Treat the waiters and waitresses with respect and you will get it in return. TIP # 8 ? If you have your heart set on eating in the ala cartes book them your first day as they fill up fast. This time around we did not have to wait in line and booked as many as we liked. TIP # 9 ? Be prepared to wait in line at the bank. Get a drink and take the time to make new friends..you have all day! There was only 1 bank open in the bungalow section when we were there but there were 2 tellers. To get money you need your passport and they only take clean, unmarked Canadian bills. TIP # 10 ? Buy beer at the airport for the bus ride. They take Canadian bills but be careful as the price of beer may vary!. TIP# 11 - Find the Secret Wine Bar beside El Benny?s. It is a wonderful place to meet people and enjoy good music. Bermise has all kinds of music and all kinds of wine. This place is a hidden gem and really underutilized. Ask about the Wine tasting on tues nights TIP # 12 ? Go to the Market Bar , do some shopping and enjoy a Mojito TIP # 13 ? Go off the resort and meet and chat with the locals. They are wonderful people and will invite you into their home TIP # 14 ? I stayed in the hotel this time, but have stayed in Bungalows, Standard , and Villa. All are clean and roomy . If you have high expectations for your room stay in the villas . The hotel has few rooms with balconies so if you insist on a balcony and you are on a budget do not book the hotel. Barracks or standard rooms are a bit tired but still livable. TIP# 15 ? Wine at the buffet restaurant and exceptional and they sell it at the store for $2.50!! They also sell beer, liquor, pop, wine coolers (which are new) Smokes, and other personal toiletry items , TIP# 16 ? Try the espresso, cappuccino or Spanish coffee..all are very good and available at all the bars. There is a new coffee bar on the 2nd floor called Ashley Café which serves great coffee. TIP #17 ? Lots of discussion around gifting vs tipping, however there is just some items they can not get so take stuff with you and use it to barter or in trade for good service. At the market they were looking for running shoes and electronics. TIP# 18 ? Do your liquor shopping at airport as they had the best prices ie tequila was $15.30 at store at CA and $9.15 at airport. TIP# 19 ? Take all the meds you think you will need as you will not be able to get it there TIP # 20 ? Play BINGO at 4:00..this is not your average BINGO! TIP # 21 ? Take a bike out for a ride around the area. They are in good shape. TIP#22 ? Email the resort if you have special room requests. I did and got the room I wanted TIP# 23 ? Go to the Club Amigo Friends site and talk with people going when you are. They are very helpful and can answer any question you have. I met many online and hooked up with them while I was there..what great FUN!!! The site is at http://www.amigoclub.ca/ TIP# 24 ? Take your own snorkel equipment as the snorkeling is good and just off the main beach. Take the paddle boat out. TIP# 25 ? Grab a cab and go out exploring on your own vs booking a tip through resort ? you will have a better experience . Look for buggy driver Rey or Juan Carols as they speak very good English and can take you around to small villages and local bars. Food - we always found something to eat, food was available 24 hrs a day!! Breakfast ? at one of the 3 buffets, the 24 hr bar or El Bennys this trip only Hotel Buffet and 24 hr bar was open for Breakfast ? We ate everyday at 24 hr bar and ordered bacon and eggs, toast, pancakes, coffee, juice which was delicious ? stops at 10:00 Lunch ? at one of the 3 buffets, or at 1 of the 4 snack bars ? we ate at snack bars which had french fries, pork burgers, ham and cheese sandwiches, fish or chicken and pizza this trip only 1 buffet and 2 snack bars were open an there was no poutine!! ? Our first trip I did not realize there were so many options for snack bars where you an sit outside and eat in your bathing suit Dinner ? book one of the many ala carts or dine at one of the 3 buffets. This trip there was only 1 buffet and 2 ala cartes open ? Food was fresh and there was always a variety of meat including fish, pork and chicken, always a pasta bar and fresh bread that was to die for. ? The wine was exceptional and always topped up by waiters. ? The service at the buffet and ala carts was exceptional. Drinks/Bars ? Drinks were generous and plentiful ? They had diet cola, tonic, bottled water ? They would make any drink you asked for and had a drink list posted at most of the bars Staff/Service ? Bartenders did a great job with or without a tip ? all bars were busy but we never waited long for a drink ? Wait staff in buffet did a great job as mentioned above ? Staff at the front desk, bank and ala cart booking desk were helpful and friendly ? Most staff seemed to want to get to know you and everyone wants you to come back Beach ? All the beaches on the resort are open to the public and the beach is one of the pluses for the resort ? water is crystal clear and sand is white and clean ? There were 2 smaller beaches and then the main beach ? Main beach is huge with lots of action..there are not bars on the beach as part of the all inclusive ? They are huts as well as trees so there is a lot of shade available ? There are water sports available ie sailboats, paddle boats, wind surfers ? Beach chairs are available and delivered to your spot on the beach ? I watched this all day and the guys did not stand around for a tip which I thought was nice ? Beach bar sold beer for $1.00 and Mojitos for $2.00..this place was always happening all day but there are no more beach parties at night this bar closes at sunset ? Many were snorkeling just off the beach and said they saw some incredible fish and ocean life Weather ? When I read reviews I always look to see how the weather was as I want to go somewhere that has little rain and where the weather is sunny and warm ? Holguin is warmer than Varadero or Cayo Coco but not as warm as Santiago ? Days were 25C ? 38C degrees and nights were 18 C- 22C - we had 2 days our of the 7 that were overcast with periodic rain ? good excuse to play BINGO! Entertainment / Activities and New Years Eve ? There was nightly entertainment similar to what you see in most resorts ie Mr. Guardalavaca, Couples night, fashion show etc ? Water ballet, audience participation games, bands and dancers ? There is also a disco that looks newly renovated which opens at 11 ? There is a lot to do in terms of activities or you can just chill like we did!! ? There are bikes for rental for free and scooters for a charge ? Go on the small train that takes you around for free or take a horse carriage to see more of the back areas for $15.00 per carriage ? You can swim with the dolphins, go ATVing, travel to Havana or Santiago or grab a cab and explore with a private guide Gardens/Common Areas and bugs ? This time of yr there are mosquitoes ..I did not get bit but those that eft there windows open did ? Gardeners are hard working and always trimming and cleaning ? the place was very clean ? get them to open a coconut or make you a grasshopper out of a palm leaf ? The resort is very big so take a tour and get your bearings and it will not seem so overwhelming ? There are 4 pools 1) Villas, 2) Swim up bar at Atlantico 3) Main lobby 4) Bunglows ? water temps in pool and ocean were actually fairly warm! ? Lots of newer lounge chairs around the pools and you never had to play the ?chair? game

      “Was OK ”
It was a long time ago, about 8 years, it was a trip with the golden age. At the time the place looks good, lots of restaurants, nice pools. Like every cuba island, the food still de same, not more not less. The rooms were nice, clean and confortable. The show at night were very bad. The beach was interesting, small but the design was nice. You could walk and the beach was very big nearby.

      “Okay not great ”
A massive complex of average quality. Dinner in the restaurant feels like a bun fight due to large number of diners. The rooms are far from luxurious and seem to be stuck in a 70's communist style of furnishing. There is a wonderful fish restaurant along the beach on top of the rocks. One final thing the bar staff are definitely anti british and serve the british nation as a last resort.

“Amigo, amigo, amigo ooohhhhh club amigo ”
This was my third time in Cuba and by far Club Amigo is the best place I have stayed at so far. Not because it serves the best food and not because it is the plushest hotel. I LOVE Club Amigo because it is the liveliest hotel I have stayed at in Cuba so far. There are enough sunbeds to go round, the staff in the pool snack bars are lovely and give great service. So okay, sometimes the food can be a little bland, we took our own sauces to spice things up a bit and it worked. The wait staff in the restaurant were outstanding and if the little band come and play by your table, then please look up and listen and enjoy. I wish I had known earlier in my holiday that there was a little wine bar tucked away in Club Amigo. Myself and my friends spent the best afternoon dancing with Vermice (if I have spelt his name wrong, I am so sorry). It was wonderful. The next time I visit I shall be dancing in the dark xxx Can I verbalise what makes Amigo so special, it's not one individual thing. The place has a wonderful energy. If you sit in the lounge by Reception you can watch the World go by. The entertainment has been better than most of the hotels I have been to. Maybe this is because hotel guests actually go and watch and participate. Well done Pimba and all the entertainment team. I went to Club Amigo with a big group of friends and I left Club Amigo with the same friends and made some more along the way. A lovely group of Canadians taught me how to play flip cup. Very, very funny and a great way of bringing people together and making new mates. I laughed whilst waiting in the queue to go home, as there were people staying at 4 and 5 star hotels who were saying that the food at their hotel was a bit bland and also that it was a bit boring. UK people if you want to stay at a lively resort then go and stay at Club Amigo. It's next to a little market. It's right beside the public beach. Remember to say hello to Don Lupe and his clarinet. Stand on the beach and look to your left, you will see a little restaurant near the rocks, now look beyond that and up a little hill and there you will see Le Maison. A beautiful little restaurant which serves the best Shrimp cocktail and cheese balls you will ever eat. So UK people you can book Club Amigo Atlantico from the UK (might take a bit of digging but it's worth it). We are going back next year for Christmas for 3 weeks and I for one cannot wait.

“Great place for R & R, Sun and Beach ”
Club Amigo Atlantico is by no means a 5 Star Resort, but at 3 1/2 Stars it offers everything that a 5 star does as far as the amendities. The Resort was very clean and well kept, beaches were also clean, there was one day when alot of sea weed came ashore and staff were alittle slow in getting it cleaned up, but we didn't find it to be a big deal, there are 4 swimming pools where one could go. The food was okay, bland and somewhat tasteless, and the buffet was quite repetative, but it is Cuba after all, the al-a-carte restaurants were okay, (there was only 2 of 7 open), The Benny did have good food. We did find that the bar selections were limited, they didn't have any Mojito's, no Bloody Marys and the wine was limited to lunch and dinner only. However, get to know the staff and for 3 Peso's you could get a bottle to take back to your room. If you go to Club Amigo, I would highly suggest that you pay the extra and upgrade to a Villa. The bungalow section is far from the beach, but yet quaint. There are 2 hotel sections, one by the main lobby and it appeared to be okay, but based on what we learned while there, rooms were a little small and they had difficulty with hot water. The second hotel area is closer to the beach, but appearred run down and in dire need of work. The Villas however, are well maintained, clean, close to the ocean and close to the beach(es). We had a beautiful ocean view, can't say that we have anything quite as nice anywhere else. I would go again, for an R&R vacation, if the price is low.

I came with no expectations other than to enjoy the sun and chill out! What I got was an experience of a lifetime! The Cuban people just blew my mind! Boy could we learn many things from these truely beautiful human beings! Icame away totally humiliated (but in the nicest possible way!)What is with us so called Westernised materialistic snobs??? Oh! the food is this and that- the room was this and that etc. etc. I did just a very basic research and what I learned and then experienced taught me just how resilient we are as a species in the face of adversity. It was a pleasure and an honour to share such a fantastic country and culture and God Willing I will be granted the opportunity to return.

      Great spot
Have lost track of the number of times I have been at Club Amigo but its in the double digits by now and this time we will likely be staying two weeks. When I see reviews from the likes of Krissy (Prissy?) I have to wonder where she gets this attitude and what gives her the right to insult our Cuban friends. Perhaps she felt they were competition for her. That review is as accurate as her spelling. I can sum up Club Amigo in two sentences. If you pay for a three star resort and go there expecting a five star you will be disappointed. If you go there expecting a three star, you will be pleasantly surprised.

      hotel are overlooked
The majority of the guests here were Canadians (alot of French Canadians and some English speaking), a fair number of Brits and a few Europeans. On the weekends, there are alot of Cuban guests who stay here as a "reward" by the government, so it can get very busy and noisy. There are alot of repeat guests here (one man we met has made over 80 visits), so obviously the "bumps and bruises" of the hotel are overlooked by those not expecting fancy amenities.

      it was fantastic
I travelled with my husband, 9 year old son and my parents week of 2/8 - 2/15. Contrary to past reviews I must say this was a great resort. Upon arrival at the airport we took a shuttle to the hotel (approx 1 hour ride). We had great service upon arrival. Make sure to leave a peso or 2 at the reception desk. They do a great job and very rare they will recieve a tip. We were escorted to our hotel, we stayed in the bungalow section and was part of the Cameleon Club. The advanatage of booking with Nolitours (Cameleon Club) is you get the choice of 3 a la carte restaurant , 1 bbq night and 1 cuban food night. We enjoyed the supper at Benny's. For an additional 10 pesos more you can have the lobster dinner which is to die for. You can always find something to eat at the buffets. My son who is 9 years old is a very fussy eater and surprised me, he was able to find something to eat during our vacation. Make sure to bring a large travel cup, the bar tenders have no problems filling your drinks up for you. There is always something available to drink. The beach is beauitful. I have been to several beaches and this by far is the best one yet. The bungalow section was a great choice. The rooms were cleaned every day. We left 1 peso every day for the maid. She did a fabulous job and we always had a pleasant surprise when we got back from our day out at the beach / pool. She would make something with the towels every day on our bed. To get your money exchange (cash only) would be in the bungalow section. There was a short line-up. At the hotel Atlantico you could expect to wait for 45 min - 1 hour. My son went to the kidzone for 2 days of vacation. They brought him to the zoo and another day they went horseback riding. He really enjoyed that. Make sure to bring some extra clothing, hygeiene product etc when you go. The Cubans can really us these items. I left some of my clothing, crocks and hygeine product and gave them to the people who worked at the kidzone. I also left some of my son's clothing. They would rather take clothing than mpney. We were fortunate to visit a home while we were there. During our bicycle ride a local woman invited us into her home and made coffee for us. They have very little but they sure give a lot. I would recommend this resort to everyone. I have never been to a 5 star hotel but my parents stayed at a 5 start resport in Punta Cana and they enjoyed this vacation over Punta Cana. We have already booked for next year at the same resort but for 2 weeks.
