“I didn't like at all ”
I want to thank to all staff because they were very kind to us. The buffet was very repetitive and very bad elaborated, just a few variation. I do not recomend this hotel as a five star hotel because the bathroom from the lobby was very dirty with papers and bad smell. I was three days there and they only cleaned our roomm once. We consider that the cleaning could be more often since this was a three bedroom place. The minibar was empty most of the time, the people from the hotell didn't take care of putting new refresment in the minibar. WE had to call to be served. The recreation was very bad, sometime it was necessary to stand in a very long line to be served because the service was very slow. I was in this hotel from agoust 20 to 23rd room in the 2212 room. I think that this was the very bad spent money in my life because I don't see any conditions acording to this price (634 CUC per three days). There was not supervisor to check the cleaning and other facilities. We recomend to the manager of the hotel to visit Varadero Melia Hotels to check what is a good five star hotel. Please do not sell this hotel as a five star hotel, because you dont deserve this. The door from the closet was broken, and from the bathroom was broken as well. I dont thinh that a five star hotel could be offer in these conditions.
We stayed in this hotel in July for three supposedly relaxing and romantic days after 12 days travelling around Cuba. From all places, this is where we both got food poisoning. And there is no scope for mistake because we only ate there during those days, or rather ended eating toast and butter for most of the stay ... The food was bad generally but both of us got really sick, on two different occasions because of how badly the food is conditioned. I am not very picky on hotels and know that when you go for "all inclusive" you have to accommodate having a certain ?chain? or ?mass? feeling. But the food was really bad; the buffet was bad, the restaurants unavailable and when available turned out to be as bad as the buffet. Food is simply not fresh and, in particular, not appropriately conditioned. And it is not because it?s Cuba and they have supply constraints .. We ate really well in much more simple places in Cuba! Melia St. Maria has a real issue with the food. We simply cannot go back to a Melia hotel. Pity, because staff was friendly although everything else was a bit run down but ok.
“Thanksgiven 2014 ”
Just returned Oct2014 from this Melia property. To start with negatives The food at all the buffet is not up to Melia standards in both quality and selection.Lunch time buffet was inedible every day and so had to go to snackbar which was ok but limited in selection. On Thursday I was going on an excursion at 7.30am breakfast buffet was not open so went to 24hr snack bar only to be told that workers had been told by management not to make any food until later on day.The speciality restaurants were ok but not up to my previous experiance in Melia's On the positive side the people who worked there were excellant, friendly and well trained in their jobs The barman at the beach was amazing he remembered what my wife and I were drinking from second drink onwards .The beach was really nice white sand, talcum powder texture. The entertainment in the evening was decent especially the local musicians who played a large variety of music. In summary I had a good vacation but would not recommend or go back to this property. If you go take some protection for mosquitoes.and finaly the grounds and gardens were gorgeous.
“Beware while shopping in resort store!!! ”
We visited this beautiful resort in June 2014. Perfect location, beautiful beach, nice landscaping kept clean by hard working gardeners, friendly stuff. This is when pros end. Now cons: The buffet was closed for lunch which left us and all other guests with limited and repeated menu during our stay. The French restaurant was also closed. Fridge in our room was restocked with drinks only in first 2 days, then for remaining 5 days we had call lobby day after day so around 6:30- 7:00 PM we got warm drinks, good for use next day. Finally the worst inconvenience was store inside resort. Shopping there reminded us Dominican Republic where buying a daily necessity was a pure nightmare. Several goods in this store had no price on them and clerk charged whatever she was desired at that time. For several items she charged twice much than actual price. Example; Hollywood cigarettes, one day she charged me 2.20 CUC per pack, then next day she asked 2.50 CUC. Since we traveled to 8 different locations (provinces) in Cuba in last few years we know that this cigarettes cost 1.20 CUC across entire Cuba Island including airports. To not further ruin our vacation we decided to do our shopping in next door resorts, Melia Las Dunas or Sol, where all prices were posted and shopping was fun as it should. It is sad that we stayed in this beautiful resort but we had to walk long distances to avoid scam practices in this store that drags down reputation of entire resort. Several another guests at that time complained at this store with bad experiences and food quality as well. We hope that management will seriously look at these issues.
“Great resort for families ”
Went to this resort over new years 6 adults and 3 kids aged 2, 4, 6. It's an average hotel from Cuba and we have all traveled many times before to different parts so we knew what to expect. Beach was great sand was clean and water relatively clean. Pool areas were also nice and clean so that was a plus with children. They have a playground and a kids club but we didnt take advantage of them. Also didn't really get to go to any a la cartes so can't really comment on those either. but the snack restaurant by the pool had amazing wood oven pizzas. As for the grill restaurant by the beach they had delicious calamari and grilled meats, best I've had. Our room was in one of the upstairs units so we didnt have to deal with any bugs or anything the only downfall was that one of my dresses was stolen from the room . Other than that it's a pretty good place for a family vacation.
“Another awesome Cuban vacation! ”
This is the 1st time we've ever went to an all inclusive resort off season. We generally go in February, I highly recommend it. No line ups, no issues getting a lounger in the shade, either at the pool or on the beach. The service was perfect, the staff is not as rushed and they can take the time to chat and you build a relationship with them. My personal favorite staff members were Obsmein (spelling?) bartender at the swim up bar- outstanding person, very friendly, customer service oriented ,knowledgeable and an all around great guy. Yasmin waitress from the buffet restaurant- absolute sweetheart!! always a friendly smile, she has a wonderful personality & her serving skills are excellent. Denise from the entertainment dept.- lovely young lady!! Nadine from the dance group- lovely person & man can she dance!! (The entertainment is extremely good @ this resort, the choreography is unbelievable) and of course cannot forget my 2 favorite landscapers..Roberio (spelling ? older gentleman) and Jorge- absolute sweethearts- such hard workers! do not forget to say hello & maybe bring them a drink once in awhile- it gets so hot. Speaking of hard working.,.Osmain-the pool groundskeeper- the man NEVER stops working!! always cleaning up after the slobs leave their garbage all over. Ok, sorry, back to the resort. If your looking to relax, this is the resort for you. It's a relatively small resort that in my eyes was just perfect. It is beautifully landscaped, always clean and it has they MOST amazing beach I have ever seen!! upon arrival our fridge was not working so they offered to move us, I loved the location (room 2824-see below for info) I convinced them to exchange the fridge for a working one- it was done immediately. The rooms were spotless and the fridge was stocked daily. The al la carte dinners were already booked for us upon arrival-nice touch. NO hassles the next morning. We went to the Japanese- great entertainment in the food prep/ The Mediterranean- I had fish, it was good, but I wish I had tried the stuffed chicken, it looked amazing. The BBQ grill near the beach was my favorite! I had the largest piece of perfectly cooked Lobster and the grilled chicken was really, really good. The Italian restaurant was excellent, great service at all the al la carte restaurants but this one has a touch of class and the food is very good. Would I recommend this resort? Absolutely! if your looking for a relaxing vacation, this is the place to go. And if your there in early December and Peter from London, ON is there.. tell him Richard & Joanne said hello! one more thing.. the staff usually have 1 or 2 children- seems to be mostly girls?? if you have extra kids summer clothes, bring some with you to give away. Their children are their pride & joy and they strive to give them everything they can. Their income is really small (25-28 pesos MONTHLY) so be generous, they really do appreciate everything.
“Outstanding Honeymoon Destination ”
We chose the Melia Cayo Santa Maria for our honeymoon in early September 2014: it is a choice we will always be happy that we made. From the beginning of our honeymoon the staff went out of their way to ensure that we had a relaxing time. We were met by the incredibly welcoming and more than competent Yadiris who ensured that our stay was complemented by an array of complementary and exciting treats including a massage and a private romantic moonlight dinner. Yadiris also went out of her way to arrange a lovely photo-shoot on the beach for us complete with music and champagne. Accommodation in in small apartment-type blocks spread throughout large beautiful gardens with a very short walk to the gorgeous white sand beach. The rooms themselves are nice and clean but are not as well equipped as the rooms in the melia Habana. However, you won't spend much time in your room if you're like us because there are so many fun things to do on the Hotel site itself. The food in the buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner was really outstanding with an excellent variety cooked to a high standard. There is also a good selection of a la carte restaurants including Japanese, French and Italian food with themed interiors and more of a restaurant feel which allow you to dress up. There is an excellent entertainment team who are able to strike the right balance between encouraging engagement without being too intrusive. We found them really good fun. There were excellent evening music and dance performances at the amphitheatre with trips to a local disco if you wanted too. The bars had a huge selection of excellent drinks where I enjoyed more than enough rum for a lifetime! If you want there are also a number of excursions on offer including trips to Trinidad. However, the cays are actually really quite far away from the mainland making any such excursion quite a long day which meant that as a result we didn't make any but this did't really spoil the fun for us. Thank you Melia Santa Cayo Maria for providing us with such a lovely honeymoon. We hope that we can return to Cuba one day!
“Great Vacation ”
Just returned from a family vacation. Our kids are 13 and 15 and they had a great time meeting kids their age. The resort is a little tired, but it is under new management and there were people there all week watching all facets of the operation. The beach is fantastic; the ocean turquoise and the beach white sand with plenty of palapas for shade. The food was 'Cuban good'. We ate at all of the restaurants and would rate the a la cartes above some of the other resorts we have visited in Cuba that had a higher star rating. The buffet was good for breakfast and supper; we found lunch was a little more sparse so we started going to the pool restaurant for pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers and sandwiches. The room was very nice and kept clean by the maid. Sheets were replaced every other day on the beds which were definitely not provided 'Serta therapeutic' mattresses. The pools were large and refreshing. Since this is the off-season, it is expected that the variety of food would be less than high season but we were satisfied with the volume, quantity and quality of food available.
“Nice place, great staff ”
After over 10 years travelling to DR and Mexico for our sun vacation, we decided to try Cuba. We stayed at this hotel from april 4th to 18th. The size of the place was great for us. No partys, just great relaxation. The hotel is clean but in need of some renos. That wasn't a real problem so we just lived with it. Our room was clean and confortable. We had good water pressure and hot water. The beach is beautiful, with medium white sand. Even near the water, it's not easy to walk. My husband said that going east (on the right side) it becomes easier to walk a little further. The water is clear. We went on little catamaran tours with employees of the hotel. I really prefer that to try to understand how it works while trying not to be hit by any part of the boat in the wind... So we just relaxed and looked at the other hotels on the coast. There is a lot of palapas, but they are taken early in the morning. The pools are nice. We spent a few days there. There are cute blue and green lizards on the white posts of the palapa over the tennis table. Great for pictures! If you wear high heels at night, and walk between the two pools, be careful. The tiles are not in very good condition. I was a little apprehensive about the food. I never had a problem finding something good to eat. At the Ranchon, the restaurant by the beach, they have a great fish of the day. They serve you the whole fish, so if you don't like to see the head, be prepared! They have good pizzas at the snack bar near the pool. The buffet was good. If you are there for two weeks, just try not to eat a little bit of everything every night, because it will be the same tomorrow. I really liked the pancakes and french toasts at breakfast. Daniel knows what he's doing! At supper, the fried rice was very good. But my favorite thing was the crepes flambees(with fruits and rum) made by the chef right by the dessert table. He saw me almost every night, I must admit...He knew my "recipe"... We tried the Mediteranean (not for us), the french (good, but not the same the two times we were there) and the japanese(very good). In fact we went there three times. On one occasion, they had shirmps, but not the two other times. We really enjoyed listenning to the live music at night. Especially the two young men playing guitar at the little plaza between the buffet and the a la carte restaurant. The staff at this hotel is very good! Smilling and pleasant. Danielle, the Air Transat representant is very nice and efficient. A great person!
“Clean, excellent staff, and tasty food! ”
I have been to a few different resorts in Cuba, and I always find the food blah with very little flavor. This place impressed me so much...I was so pleased to find all kinds of tasty food here...not blah at all! This resort was also very clean and the staff, especially Osbiel at the swim up bar, were so nice. The beach was beautiful and honestly I have no complaints at all. My family and I enjoyed our week at this resort very much. We would definately go back.
Loved it here.. Rooms good Food ok Pool excellent Beach excellent People awesome Would I go back? Yes We went with Thomas Cook and we would of returned but they don't fly directly there anymore, so this year we are trying cayo coco.. Shame really as it was beautiful here :)
“Amazing place for the $ you spend. Remember: it's Cuba ”
The MCSM is a very nice, small sized resort with all the basic needs most popular all-inclusive resorts. I'll be the first to laugh at people who give places bad reviews for crappy food, but this place does have sub par food as far as a 4-5 star standard goes. But, there is always something good to eat, just not the crazy variety of other places like DR or Mexico. The staff is amazing, friendly, couteous and responsive. Tips go a long way. The beach is gorgeous. The only issue I could even bring up is a sand bank at shore level which might make walking up and down for seniors a little tricky. Other than that, amazing. No water shoes required. The grounds are a little beat up but honestly, the entire place is quaint and small enough to make it feel like a vacation and not like a crowded mall. No trains, No crazy long walks to the facilities. BRING BUG SPRAY Mosquitos are relentless in the early AM and after 5 PM I've been to Mexico 11x Domenican Rep 3x and Cuba now 2x and this place is honestly a great value for your money. Just remember: it's Cuba. Limitations, yes but also advantages like: secure, amazing beaches and best service ever. Enjoy!
“Everything I needed for a good trip in the sun! ”
I am not very savvy with cruises or beach resorts, so bare with my review, but given this was a first, I can say with honesty it was really great and met all my expectations. The beach was great quality, something I made excellent use of! The villas weren't bad either; they had no bugs of any kind and were well kept. The food met my requirements, but more seasoned travelers tell me it can be better in other places. The resort was close to a local tourist town that had a lot of kitschy nicknacks to buy. The alcohol was in good quality and in plentiful supply. Most importantly though, the staff was wonderful, accommodating, friendly, and warm. The trip to the resort also benefited from a bus ride through local towns which was actually quite a nice treat. I recommend this resort to anyone!
“Lovely, relaxing stay ”
I have just come back from a 1 week stay at Melia CSM with my boyfriend and would definitely recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a relaxing holiday and warm welcome to the lovely country of Cuba. Before going on my holiday, I had read nothing but praise for the staff at this hotel and have to say I was not disappointed. Upon arrival, we were greeted with drinks and a very friendly porter took us to our hotel room on a buggy, giving us a tour of the hotel on our way. All staff were extremely vigilant and efficient with food and drink, filling up your glass as soon as you emptied it. All of the staff treat the customers with a personal touch, remembering tiny details you may have told them, and bringing your favourite drinks without even being asked. Truly personal and genuine service which I am very grateful for. Our room was excellent for its location, but was perhaps lacking in other areas. Was a little bit dirtier than we had hoped for, with sheets sometimes rust-stained and marks in the bath. However, it was a large room right on the poolside and about a 3-5 minute walk form the simply breathtaking beach. The activities available on the beach were excellent, and at no extra cost. We were able to take out pedallos, kayaks and go windsurfing. Also, sailing boats are available and staff are more than willing to take you out for a short trip which is so much fun when the waves are choppy. We also took advantage of the spa facilities, which were fabulous and very reasonably priced (for English customers, anyway). Pool facilities are great, with a kid friendly zero-entry pool and separate adult pool. Ozzy at the swim up bar was very friendly and attentive, bringing drinks and pizzas over to us on the sunbeds (thanks ozzy!). One of very few complaints would be that the wifi is very temperamental and, although it was cheap (4.50 pesos an hr) cut out after 10 mins. I was told I could file for a refund but was never given my money back. However I realise that wifi in a country like Cuba isnt going to be like we would find in England and that this is part of the territory. Just a word of warning for anyone thinking of getting the wifi :) A big thank you to all the staff at Melia CSM, we hope to see you soon!
“Can't wait to return ”
This was my first time MCSM and was very pleased , the resort has beautiful gardens, great pool and beaches , friendly staff that make you feel at home. To all of servers at the buffet a special thanks. To all of the entertainers who really involved in getting people to do things such day activities learning new water exercises, dancing, were fun.The night shows were very good,I enjoyed that they had a special show for the children. We had one night were it had rained most of the day and they brought all the dancers and entertainers into the bar, and the entertainers made sure that everyone was up dancing ,was a fun night. Room was very clean. As I was so expressed with MCSM we have already booked a trip for November .
“As beautiful as the people but the food is questionable ”
**I am an avid traveller but I'm more of a stay in town with the locals type of person. This was my first all inclusive resort and my first time to Cuba. I will break it up into sections starting from the best to the worst. 1. The Staff Denis, Orlando, Junior and Daique from the entertainment team were my "Clique" for the week. They made my trip. Never a dull moment with them. I had so much fun and they were so kind and down-to-earth. We went partying at the disco few nights and had way too much fun. I would come back to MCSM just to see them again. The rest of the staff were very friendly can't think of any that were rude. The performers were great and super talented. The servers were super friendly I like Roxanna at the beach restaurant she was one of my fav's. The bartenders all super nice and welcoming. 2. The Beach The sand is white and the water clear turquoise, pure perfection. The waves get big in the afternoon so it's best to go early in the AM. I partied a lot in the evening so I always missed the early calm waters which meant red flags for me and no water sports so go early if that's a big thing for you. I did get the catamaran one day and it was a blast. 3. The Grounds Beautifully amazing gardens and landscaping. When you first walk in through the lobby its literally breathtaking. The pool area is nice and picture perfect and was always clean. We took a walk to the two resorts next door and were so relieved we chose MCSM its smaller and more intimate. Everything is close and within quick walking distance. there are a lot of stray cats but they were cute so it didn't bother me. The only issue with the grounds is the lighting. It gets very dark in the night cause there is not lighting in certain areas. For 4 nights of my trip our building had no lights at all which was scary and dangerous for us going back to our room after a night of partying. The mosquitos are the biggest downside to the resort. I was eaten alive and nothing helped. I missed a lot of the evening entertainment shows because the theater is outdoors and I couldn't hand the mosquitos I came home covered in bites. They spray deet every night and morning but it doesn't work as well as I wish it would. 4. The Room It was room 0823. Which is pretty far from the lobby bar and buffet but closer to the beach. The room was decorated nicely in a Caribbean style. Bright colors and hand painted wall art. It is a very good size a lot of space. There's a LCD T.V. which has cable with a good assortment of channels. The mini bar is just a small fridge with pop and beer that is refilled daily. The cleaner comes everyday and makes cute shapes out of the towel's that was different everyday and make me smile each time. There was hot water only after you let the shower run for a few minutes. The room had A/C which was good kept the room cool however it did make a lot of noise. The only down side I had with the room was there was a musty smell like moldy that you smell as soon as you walk in the room. 5. The food. I am a very picky eater and have never been to Cuba so I have nothing to compare it to when it comes to Cuban food. The food was okay but I had trouble eating it because of how unsanitary they are. There were flies everywhere landing on food and nothing being done about it. I never seen a cook wash his hands and one morning was served a fruit plate with a mushed fly in it. (at the snack bar) I don't want to say this but I have to mention that at the buffet I went to get a piece of bread and there was a cockroach running around in the bread basket. After that I could barley eat I only ate freshly cooked food that was made in front of me and still picked at it to make sure it was clear of "bugs". I noticed that on the first day and the last day the food was a lot better and the buffet was a lot cleaner. The whole time I stuck to fried eggs at breakfast, fried fish and fries at lunch and stir fry at dinner. The Japanese restaurant had great décor and was a great experience however the food was the same as the buffet and they didn't even have chopsticks for the sushi. The Italian was the same thing nice experience and great décor but the same food as the buffet. The pizza at the snack bar was iffy but I ate it with only cheese if I was hungry later in the evening. Overall this resort is beautiful and the staff was the best. so friendly and kind the drinks were good, always different though but good non the less and the beach is stunning. food not so much. I would definitely go back but I would bring my own snacks like chips, crackers, beef jerky chocolate etc.. MCSM is the best of all the other resorts in the area. There's a plaza 5 minutes away with the disco and a market and a bowling ally! 2 min walk from the gym and spa. I will be coming back here to see the staff which I feel like are my new extended family! P.S. I gave 1cuc tip to the servers and bartenders every couple of days and made some special packages for the housekeeper and a few of my favorite staff. Packages had stuff like clothes, makeup, earrings, sunglasses, bathing suits and sandals. Next time I will bring more!
“Beautiful Beach ”
We had our wedding at this resort, in May 2013, 9 of us in the party. The staff were very friendly, we had a wonderful two weeks here. The beach is stunning, it worth coming here for that alone. This resort is the best of both world if you want a quite relaxing time, or if you want to get involved and do activates, and either really impact on each other. Only down side to the holiday was the vegetarian options for food, it was fine in the buffet area, as you could pick and chose, but all of the restaurants struggled to accommodate me.
“Memorable stay, ”
After a 7+ hour coach journey from Havana to get to Cayo Santa Maria it's fair to say Melia Cayo Santa Maria needed to be something special to make up for the journey time - it didn't fail though and exceeded our expectations. It's our understanding that UK travel companies no longer fly direct which would explain why there were so few Brits here. It does look a bit tired and in need of a bit of TLC, but once you look beyond this you are faced with a hotel that prides itself on exceptional, personalised customer service because of its amazing team of staff - thank you for making our holiday. Personally I think we were spoilt by going during their low season, quiet and peaceful and such attention from staff, we'd recommend this time of year to visit for these reasons. The bar staff at the pool side bar were great, and kept us plied with many a different cocktail, and were happy to meet requests (ask Yoset for an espresso martini, the best I've ever had especially good considering he'd never made one before). This goes to all the staff, Adonis our room attendant did a thorough job and the reception team were always very helpful. Yes the food can be a little hit and miss, but we soon learn to stick to the freshly cooked to order in the buffet, and the French restaurant was great. We were also treated to a special dinner by the pool, on our last evening. A lovely experience with the added treat of our own Cuban guitar trio. I would also recommend the pizza at the pool side cafe, after a busy day out on a day trip, I'd over done it and needed an early night. Having it as an option for a light snack at any time of day or night is great. Thank you to all the team at Melia Cayo Santa Maria for making our holiday one to remember - we just wished you were a little nearer to the UK!
“First Cuban Vacation”
To start it was not Oct 2014 I just joined trip advisor now so I'm writing about it now. I stayed here Jan 6th-14th 2011 family trip with my mother her boyfriend my youngest brother & I. We all enjoyed this resort every bit of it from the entertainment to the staff, the beach, the rooms, the pools, the food everything during our stay was great. I also did a few excursions while staying there I went on the catamaran excursion it was a full day & well worth the money I had a great time. I also did the Topes overnight excursion your gone for two full days it was amazing had a blast. I also did the jeep tour excursion it was great too. I would recommend all of these excursions & this resort to all they were all great experiences you see & learn a lot.
“The Best Staff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ”
Have been to Santa Maria 30+ times in 9 years. So ........ need I say more. The property is gorgeous and the beach is amazing. This time we went with a group of 13. Everyone loved it - even the first timers to Cuba who have always said they had no desire to go to Cuba. We love it mostly because of the staff. Guest Services - Ania, Heriberto, Yoset and Rolando are incredible. You can't get any better service than with Osbiel at the pool bar and Nestor at the beach bar. These guys are why most people come back over and over. Of course, all the other staff are included too. The gardeners are always hard at work and the property shows that. The bellboys are wonderful men who are willing to help in any way they can - Adrian, Michael, Jorge, Alexis, Yuniel and ___(name has left my mind). Love the rooms at the Melia - have been to over 50 islands and never had rooms like these. Housekeeping did a great job like usual. The a la carte means were very good with exceptional service from the staff. Alain at the pool side restaurant is an amazing man and he should be proud of your crew!!!!!!!!!!! Lobby bar has delicious drinks and are served by great people! thank you Danny, Ernesto and everyone else. Room service guys Eduardo and others are always there to refill your bar fridge. We do miss the DJ Nene but his brother is doing a great job in his place. Animacion: Denise, Arel, Ernesto, Lazaro, and everyone else - thank you once again for taking good care of us and for having us participate in your fun games. Reception puts up with a lot of nonsense from clients and do it with utmost professionalism as do all the guest services team. Some people should just stay home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Juan Carlos the Air Transat rep is the best!! There are unfortunately a few staff who have moved on that we miss very much. Bugs are a hit and miss - there are either a lot or none it seems. Just ensure you take the "green can of OFF" - I find this works best. We always put it on in the morning and then again after shower before going out for dinner. We had no issues with air or hot water or water pressure!! There are still some things that need fixing though and have needed fixing for a very long time. Bathroom locks behind pool, fans in lobby bar. Hopefully the new Manager will get on this as no one else has and I think people have been complaining about this for 3 years or so!!!! Breakfast - Danny and Frank - they are what make breakfast amazing - their smiles and big welcome back hugs. 2 great guys who have been there a very long time. Yuri - what can we say - he's a wonderful man. I recommend Melia to lots of people weekly and they come back happy!!!!!!!!!!! Hats off to the greatest group of staff I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Can't wait to go "home". Hugs for everyone.
“For all travellers ”
We were here in March 2014 and just loved this resort we have never been to all inclusive before but after this we will be going every year ,the staff are all nice and everything at this resort will make you fall in love with it ,food is great ,service was very good .
“Good resort fantastic general manager ”
We spent there three days in august. The resort is good, nice beach, good grill restaurant and big and quiet rooms. A special appreciation to the general manager, very kind and proactive. Overall judgement is very positive.
Just returned from my vacation! I loved everything about it! The resort is beautiful, it is more on a quiet side , but if you want to have fun to go dancing, the entertainment team is always there to makes sure you have an amazing time!! Rooms are nicely done , we didnt have any issues with our room!! We loved it! Food was good..Everything we eat it was good, there were not many choices, but still very tasty! Beach is beautiful!!!!!!!! Staff very friendly ,especially entertainment team Orlando ? Dennise? Yunior ? they made my vacation, they were amazing! Overall its amazing!! Looking forward to going back there in couple of months !!!?
“Fantastic :-) ”
We stayed here in August with our eight.year old daughter. We were doing Cuba in 42 days, staying everwher, from casa particulares to Cayo Largo and Cayo Guilermo. What can we say? After Cayo Largo, our second best destination!!! Everything's just prefect, except annoying mosquitoes. We would love to come back (though I doubt it, as the world is too big), but if we ever come back to Cuba, it will be this place. The food is excellent, the beach is just awesome, accommodation is perfect, what else do you need??? Maybe some more really sociable and talkative staff, especially entertainment team and cheaper wellness. Which doesn't mean it's not good, it can just be improved, a bit. To make the stora short, just go ther, you won't regret it!
“Amazing resort! ”
I've go to the Melia cayo santa maria from august 21 to 28 and it was just a amazing trip! All the staff are so friendly and smiling! A special thanks to all the people of the animation : Dj Alex, Orlando, Daiky, Lazaro, who make a real good job with all the dancing party and the games form the morning to the afternoon. Miss u all!! The food was ok, not a lot of variety but it's cuba so...I specialy like the grill near form the beach and the mediteranean restaurant was really good! The rooms are clean and mini bar refile every day in the morning! Nothing bad to say about it. I love it so much that I will return at the beginnin of december. Just few weeks from now! see you soon :-)
“YOU MUST READ THIS REVIEW!! ”
Where to begin. First want to say the ages of our travelers so you can understand the diversity of our group, 28(F), 28(F), 62(F), 64(M), 10(F), 14(F). Arrival to the resort: When we pulled up there were 2 beautiful dancers and a waiter with rainbow slushies! The front desk had all of the room arrangements set and ready to grab and go. They brought our luggage to the room and vacation had started before we knew it. Room: They are beautiful! The reviews of people complaining of a little spot in the bathroom are the people who should stop traveling and just stay home!! We had 2 room and they were no different, they were perfect! We slept 4 people in our room and it was great, when they say a cot is available upon request, it is not a cot, it is another twin size extremely comfortable bed. The pillows were great, they bathroom was clean, the floors were spotless and as for "bugs" and "creatures" the most we had was a cute little baby gecko in our shower because my daughter left the door open for about 30 minutes that night. Our mini bar was stocked every day with pop beer and water. Yes they stock it around 3pm but it was still done, unlike many of the reviews state. Pool: Perfect! I don't necessarily enjoy swimming and it is a rare day i get in a pool here in Windsor but I woke up, ate breakfast (AMAZING) and got in the pool. The only time I got out of the pool was to eat again or lay in the sun. FOOD: Buffet has a wide variety of food and yes many of the things repeat them selves everyday, but have you ever been to a buffet in your home town? does anything ever change? What do you expect from these people. There are so so many foods to choose from it would be impossible to change it all up. There is 3 stations where they make your food in front of you, or if you dont want to wait, choose from the 60 other dishes already made. In the morning the crepes and french toast are to die for!! I fell in love on day 2 and ate the same thing every day for breakfast. For dinner there is a table of fresh raw meat and seafood and the chicken made to order is sooooo good!!! Many people state that there is no flavour....... lie! :) and if they dont have enough salt, pick up the salt shaker that is on every table and add some more. There is a 24 hour snack bar that makes pizzas, burgers, hotdogs, chicken sandwiches, fries..... so much more and it was always consistently good. Mediterranean restaurant was by far our favourite a la carte, the veal tenderloin with mashed potatoes and mushroom sauce was made perfect. Italian restaurant was our least favourite, and not because the food wasn't good it just didn't appeal to us. We also had French and that was a good meal as well. STAFF: The sweetest, happiest, most helpful people I have ever met on a resort. A special hello to Osbiel at the pool bar, Denise and Arel and Lazaro in the entertainment and the lady in the restaurant with the really long name that I cant remember but I will never forget her smiling face and the way she set our 6 person table just for us every morning with fresh flowers and already poured orange juice. Excursions: We went on the catamaran which included snorkeling and dolphin interaction. It was a wonderful day, and again our boat staff helped make that possible. They made us feel safe the entire trip and they made sure everyone was happy and ok for our entire trip with was from 9 am until 4pm. It is so worth the $85 per person and you will not regret it. We also paid a Taxi to take us into the city of Remedios and it was a great day. We felt safe the entire time and the people were so friendly in town. We did our best shopping in the town and had, by far, our best meal. I definitely recommend visiting this "Real" part of Cuba on your trip. Beach!!! Beautiful, just beautiful. Clean and beautiful. We did not use internet so I cannot comment there. Also I want to make mention of the general manage of the hotel, I am so sorry i do not know his name but he is a wonderful man. One of the members of our group, a 14 year old girl, fainted at breakfast do to too much sun and low sugar. I have never seen faster medical service. Before I knew it they had her legs raised, orange juice by her side, a towel under her head and that wonderful man offering everything he could to be sure we all were ok. Once she was ok to get up they shuttled her to our room, the manager called and came several times even days later to check in on her and us. Thank you so much for being so caring. Also, it didn't matter gender, race, size, at this resort EVERYONE smiled, everyone joined in the games and fun. It was a taste of real peace and any problems you may have left at home, they disappeared while in this resort. ONE BAD THING: And this was so bad that it couldnt get any worse!! The public washrooms!!! They were a nightmare!! Never Clean, Super Smelly, no tissue. Would not let my daughter enter them to look in the mirror or wash her hand let-a-lone use the toilets. I was heart broken to leave, It has been 3 days home and I still feel sad that I couldn't have just a few more days. This was supposed to be my last vacation of the year but I cant wait to go back and I have just booked my next trip back to Melia Cayo Santa Maria for September 26, yes 4 weeks from now. Amazing. Worth every penny and every second. Please travel here if you want to experience a vacation of a lifetime. No its not a luxury vacation in Hawaii but it is just a good. :)
“Great and relaxing get away”
first off a lot of people say the food in Cuba is not good well I say it is I have been to Cuba 4 times, buffet to the la carte restaurants. all of the staff at the Melia Cayo Santa Maria were amazing from the front desk to the pool bars I am not a big drinker but I do have to say the drinks were very good . the entertainment was not very long some nights were better than others but over all it was ok not much entertainment in the day time but there was always something to do. travel time from the airport to the hotel is approx. 90 mins but there are sights to see and it goes fast check in was easy they gave us our room keys on the bus so when we got there we went straight to our rooms and the view was amazing .beautiful turquoise water that I was in every day boating and shopping is so close by you can take a bus ride to the local market for 1 peso. The lobby bar was my personal favorite .every night before dinner that was the place for me they always has some sort of entertainment between 5 and 8 pm .I highly recommend this hotel . I plan to return in DEC with my Family.
“Christine D Great vacation ”

“Great family vacation ”
We stayed for 2 weeks mid-july and it was our first all-inclusive with both kids (2 and 4). We went several times to Cuba and Cayo Santa Maria (our 3rd visit) as a couple so we knew what to expect of Cuba. Room: This is a small resort and that's why we chose it. Our room (1622) was really well located, right off the path to the beach et facing the pool and mini-club. The room was spacious and each kids had their own bed + the 2 double beds for the parents. Everything in the room functioned well during the 2 weeks (AC, hot water, safe, mini bar always filled, etc). Service: The service was great, there were great waiters in all restaurant and bars, you just had to chose your table in their section and you were all set. We had 2 small kids and the waiters were very helpful during the meals, always considering the needs of our girls. All employees are very nice and enjoy talking with us (even gardener, pool boy, etc). Food: Yes we are in Cuba.... Breakfast was very good, lots of choices but long wait at the omelette or pancake station. Lunch time was the worse meal to eat because the menu was always the same in the 2 available restaurants (beach ranchon and snack bar). The kids ate pizza almost every day, must admit, it was good. You must try the fried calamaries at the beach ranchon, delicious! But nothing extrordinary about lunch time. The buffet at night was good, espacially the pasta and fresh grilled fish. The a la carte restaurants is what saves this hotel food wise. They are all great, many choices, food is fresh and well prepared. Our favorites were the Japanese, Mediterranean and French (that's where they serve the langoustine, delicious but small). Beach: Breathtaking! Espacially when there is no waves. It's clear, warm and beautifull. No matter what time, you could always find chairs under a palapa, no need to reserve. That was great! There is even a guy who set the chairs for you and sweeps them. You can snorkel just a 15 min walk to the left, towards the Sol Melia hotel. Nice, many fishes, we even saw a small squid, baracuda. Shows: There was a clown entertaining the kids before the show. My kids found him funny. The shows were nice, especially the Disney tribute with many characters and princesses. The downside, they repeted the same shows on our second week. Activities: We went to the 2 pueblos, nice souvenirs, all the same stuff, really warm and not a lot of shade. You can just go to the one at Las Dunas, no need to take the bus to the other one. We also went to see the Delphinarium, ripoff!! You know when you have the feeling that you are taken advantage off because you are a tourist... We were told at the hotel that it was free to walk around and see the dolphins. When we arrived, we were told we had to pay 5$ per person (free for the kids) for the entrance and show, even though the show was over. The man was super arrogant and rude. We paid the 5$ to walk around the bridges and look at the dolphins. Nothing much to see, if you don't plan on swimming with the animals, don't bother to go... This is a very quiet resort, not much noise or activity around the pool or at the beach. After the show, not much nightlife. We walked around other resorts and they were crowded and noisy. We really ejoyed the peace and quiet of the Melia. Overall, we had a great holiday, would recommand this resort and we would go back in a heartbeat. No one in our family wanted to leave after the 2 weeks, would have stayed for a third!
“Very good all-inn hotel ”
Very nice all-inn hotel , beautifull Swimming pools. Very nice beach with blue ,blue see. Good sport facilities. The only thing is there were 4 restaurants but they are not allways open and the way of reservation is very bad. But once you have a place it is very good food.
“INCREDIBLE VACATION!!! ”
My husband and I went on our first ?kid free? vacation to The Melia at the recommendation of a co-worker who has been there a couple of times. We were NOT disappointed in the least! I read a hundred or more trip advisors before we left and I have to say that anyone who gave this hotel an excellent rating was right on the money!!! There are so many incredible things I want to say about the Melia but I think this trip advisor would be a novel! We had a fantastic time! We arrived late at night and the bus ride was long and dark but the bus was very comfortable and the beer served on the bus was nice and cold (yay!) We already knew that the hotel was a good hour drive from the airport so we were prepared for that and I am told that the beaches at Cayo Coco are a thousand times nicer than the beaches closer to the airport. Once we arrived, we were registered quickly and given a shuttle drive to our ?block? which was not far at all. The room was super pretty and very clean! The bed was comfortable and the air conditioning was a blessing! The showers were hot and had plenty of power behind them. There was a safe in the room and we kept our passports and valuables in there but I can say with confidence that I was not fearful of having anything taken. Alexander did an incredible job of tidying the room every day that we were there and always had a big smile on his face! He even surprised us with a few cool towel animals to spruce up the room!! They brought me much joy!!! :D I recommend that everyone take the quick briefing the morning after you arrive: Janey from Transat Holidays was very informative and made sure you remembered the importance of your blue towel and having the $25.00 in convertible pesos in cash to pay at the airport when you leave. I have a few shout outs that I would like to mention because they made our stay an amazing one! The Food was a little sketchy for me (but seriously I am NOT adventurous when it comes to trying new things).. in saying that, there was still plenty of variety that I did not go hungry in the least. My husband was in his absolute glory when it came to the food! He LOVED the fish by Freddy most of all! By day 2 I knew what was going on in the dining area and how to collect / order food and how to pick the things that wouldn?t scare me. Frank (Amego!) had the best morning smiles and made our eggs however we wanted too! He was quite a character and was a great start to each day! He even gave us a few Spanish lessons while we waited!! :D Douglas Rafiel made the most amazing Crepe?s with bananas and was always very pleasant! We had PedroLuis as our morning waiter and he was always super pleasant and happy to see us. We were given our ?A le Carte? meal vouchers when we arrived so we already knew what the reservations were. Our favourite was the Japanese by FAR! It was an incredible experience and the food was delicious! The French was very good as well (second favourite meal for me!). Zadiel was our waitress at the Japanese restaurant and she was a doll! She had big smiles and very helpful. She made sure we had a great experience! Yaima was our waitress at the French restaurant and once again, we were not disappointed in the service at all!!! She was great!! The food was my 3rd favourite A le Carte experience. Daivy the Manager was AMAZING!!! We missed our Japanese dinner (we blame Nestor lol) and he was able to arrange for an alternative date for us. He was so sweet and very attentive. He always had a smile on his face even though he was always on the go. I appreciate that he took the time out to make us feel special and valued. That he did 100%!!!! ((((HUGS)))) The beach was beautiful! I was only disappointed by the fact that I couldn?t walk in it very well. Any beaches at home are generally hard sand and I can walk them for hours, I was lucky to get to the next resort before my calves and glutes gave out on me! Talk about a workout! Lol NESTOR!! My husbands favourite person at the entire resort!! Nestor was fantastic!! He made sure our glasses were full and he was outgoing and a total joy to chat with!! Always with the big smiles and I was sure to get a big ole? hug from him before we left!!! My husband still talks about his buddy Nestor on a regular basis. We can?t wait to see you again!!! We were very lucky with weather! It was on our side the entire time we were at the Melia. In the evenings we would sit back and watch the children?s entertainment (we were missing our kids by this point) and we were quite entertained by Peter (the clown) who made all the kids laugh till it hurt! He and his partner put on a great show for everyone! We got to know Peter a bit while we were at the Melia and he was so friendly and kind. We can?t wait to see him again as well! We met Ernesto 2 days before we left and had an archery lesson from him! After chatting it up we had a great conversation and he said he wished we met him earlier! He was making plans with some friends to go and visit some sites and we could have tagged along. Unfortunately we had already made plans for the ?spa? (my wishlist item) and a day trip to the shopping area for some last minute souvenirs. Next time! For Sure!! : ) Excursions: We took a catamaran day trip which took us to see the dolphins! That was INCREDIBLE!!!! We had such an amazing day!! My husband got to snorkel and take tons of pictures of the fish under water (Unfortunately I can?t see without my glasses so I watched from the boat)? next time I hope to get prescription goggles so I can enjoy the experience too!! :D Lunch was included and my husband enjoyed the lobster (he is a fish lover) ? the chicken wasn?t bad at all! Totally worth the money ? something like $100.00 a piece if I recall? We will doing it again FOR SURE!! Day long boat ride with booze, snorkling, 30 minute break that you could walk a gorgeous beach, lunch, dolphins? sooooo amazing!!!! An experience to remember forever!! Three items on my list all checked off, dolphins, catamaran, spa?. 1 full week of fun, great people on staff, incredible location? we can?t wait to do it again!!!!
“Our Fab Holiday ”
We have just returned home from our first visit to Cuba and Melia Cayo Santa Maria .Have to say the most outstanding thing for us was the staff here .They are always happy to help and go out of there way to do so .As we didn't speak Spanish it was great to know we weren't a bother to them and helped us where and when they could. The rooms were lovely and our chamber maid was excellent and left us a lovely towel display every day also flowers and a lovely letter when we left .Although we didn't try any of the restaurants we were quite happy with the buffet lounge. There was plenty to choose from for breakfast and evening meal .We aren't fussy eaters so were happy with the choice and it was cooked well. For lunch we used the barbecue restaurant near to the beach .This was great .You could have the barbecued meat or fish ,calamari ,chips ,salad etc. As for the beach well what can you say to something so perfect .Never spent so much time in the sea ,it was like a warm bath and sand was so soft too. There is plenty to do if you want to join in but if you want a relaxing break as we did you couldn't ask for more . Many thanks again to our great " waterman" who was always smiling and kept us stocked up and again to our chamber maid for the lovely letter that made me cry. Also to Arel who spoke perfect English and we think a credit to this hotel .A very mature and respectful young man .The catamaran trip is well worth doing too .The hotel wasn't full while we there as it was low season but the entertainment was still ok too .yes mosquito's are a pain but it's something you have to get over just take plenty of repellent . Over all a great stay for us .
“My best vaction in Cuba”
Just returned from our vacation at Melia Cayo Santa Maria. Our Family enjoyed to stay at this resort. We enjoyed the beautiful beach and great food, you definitly have to try the French restorant. The entertainment is exceptional - almost every night we went to watch amazing performances and choreography, as well as magic shows. We loved the rooms, the pool activities and live music in the bar and restaurants at night. And we greatly appreciate the friendliness and enthusiasm of the entertainment team of this 9 people. Orlando, Junior, Arel, Lazaro, Dayke, Yuniel, Ernesto, Denis, and David they are AMAZING! This Hotel have a great customer service. Thank you for make my vacation so Special ! we'll come again.
“Top Staff and Beach ”
Ok so lets start with the negatives Cuba has had a very long embargo and some of the food was not top notch but i sort of expected that, that said its by no means terrible either and because there are a number of places to go and eat its not a huge problem. Thats it ! Now the positives of which there are many. Our party of six went in what was the off season and supposedly the rainy season, we were obviously very lucky because a couple of short thunder storms aside we had glorious sunshine averaging 35deg. Now the reviews on trip advisor all praise the beach and quite right too. In fact it is better than you can describe, but i will try. It is the bluest, clearest warmest softest sanded beach there is,it is jaw droppingly nice and in our case almost empty to. A real wow. The rooms are not five star but very nice , a bit musty smelling at first but this is due to the constant humidity around not cleaning which was great air con fine too. On the subject of room service , the chalet staff ( men as well as women) were fantastic, towel art well stocked mini bar and more. We went out one evening and came back to find our room festooned with flowers and chocolates with a note saying we wish you sweet dreams, now thats the extra mile! Also birthday cards were seen up in our room and sparkling wine was then produced for the evening, again above the call of duty! The drinks at the resort were all very good in fact the best i have had on an all inclusive resort. The margaritas especially good and i consider myself a bit of a snob with that drink! Again if get to know the bar staff and the waiting staff, which is easy because they are so nice and you will wait for nothing, i cannot praise the staff enough, look after them melia they are an asset. The grounds are lovely with great wildlife including the best looking lizards around. Cats are all over the place but are not a problem if you do not like them as they find the ones who do! Did the cat trip and its good value so all in all very very good. well done to all , very good memories of the trip.
“Perfect for a beach holiday ”
The resort isn't too big, but it has everything you need for a relaxing beach vacation. The beach is just stunning, the rooms are big and clean. The minibar is included, which was a plus. The restaurants you need to book in advance are very good (we likend the italian). On the beach you can use cayacs, pedolinos ... everything that doesn't have an engine. Oh, the bad thing are mosquitos! Mosquitos cubanes cabrones as my friend named them :) They are very actice in the morning and in the evening so don't forget a liter of repelent - but that is not the hotels fault. If I could, I would go back right now. :)
“More than I Expected! ”
It was worth the 90 drive from the airport. I went in the low season for one week from June 13th thru 20th with my 2 adult children. The resort was half full therefore there were no line ups for drinks, no getting up early to put your towel on a palapa it was just great! Lovely well kept grounds. Great rooms, very spacious (ones overlooking the pool are the best). A/C worked really well. Flat screen TV with good movie channels. Little bar fridge refilled daily with water, soda and beer. Room very clean! It is such a small resort that everywhere is within a short walking distance. The beautiful beach and the beach restaurant are a couple of minutes walk from the rooms. Food was okay for me. The beach restaurant served fresh fish, chicken, peppers, sausages every day. You could never go hungry. Very friendly staff. Spent a lot of time at the beach as it was much cooler there with the lovely breeze. The beach bar is a minute walk or there is also beach service. The water was awesome. Wavy but not dangerous which made it a lot more fun to play in. Lovely sand. If you like to walk the beach is quite long. In low season this is the place to have a family reunion. I have to mention that the mosquitos can be bad (not on the beach) so if you spray yourself before leaving your room in the morning and again throughout the day you will be okay but don't forget your spray. Only watched one night of entertainment which was very good (I was in bed too early). I will certainly return to this resort! Myself and my daughter had the opportunity to have dinner at the adult only hotel called the BuenaVista. This hotel is about a 5 minute car ride and it is lovely. The service was impeccable. The food was delicious. We were served about 5 different dishes and a dessert. The table was cleared each time before another dish was served. Had a drink in the bar - great ambiance. Thank you everyone at Melia Cayo Santa Maria for a great vacation!
Before I start I must mention if you like big crowds on the beach, noisy environment, proximity of bigger city, that resort Melia Cayo Santa Maria is not for you. This resort is on quiet island Cayo Santa Maria, staff is bused to work there and after their shift they are bussed back to mainland. There is nobody on the beach who would try to sell you something or would bother you in any way. Simply said, if you are looking for quiet, romantic place to relax one week or two, that is place to be. This is a reason we visited this paradise ten times in four years. And our friends became repeated customers too. Hotel : small size, about 320 rooms in bungalows, everything ( lobby, restaurants, swimming pools, entertainment, beach ) is in proximity of 150 meters from your room. Rooms are very spacious, very clean, tastefully decorated. Restaurants : buffet restaurant, French,Japanese, Mediterranean, Italian a la carte restaurants. Snack bar by the swimming pools open 24 hours, grill restaurant close to the beach for lunch. Lobby bar open also 24 hours. Food is plentiful with good variety Gardens : meticulously tended by hard working gardeners Beach : Out of this world. Sand fine and white and clean.. Water clean and turquoise. And blue sky. We are mostly coming in low season, so beach chairs are plentiful. Staff : staff is the main reason we are coming back again and again. We visited every Caribbean island, and nothing compares to Cubans. Friendly, always smiling, courteous. If any problem occurs, it is dealt with it quickly almost immediately. Check-in is a breeze, reception staff is well prepared an organized. So this are reasons we are coming back again and again. In the past there was always some reason we did not come back to resort we were vacationing. At this resort we would not change anything. For us and our friends is just perfect.
“best vacation ever ”
This is great hotel , especially for families. People are great, entertainment team is the best -special thanks to Dayke and Juni, they really made our days there. Very clean hotel, food is very good, restaurant staff is very good, we had such a great people around like Lisandra and Yesi helping us in the buffet restaurant , Rooms are very comfortable, AC is available , service is excellent . Distances are short - to the beach , to the pool , everything is very cozy .
“Great vacation - great entertainment team ”
Just returned from our vacation at Melia Cayo Santa Maria. For my wife and myself this has been our 7th stay at this resort. We enjoyed the ocean, beach and food. The entertainment is exceptional - almost every night we went to watch amazing performances and choreography, as well as magic shows. We like the rooms and gardens around the pool and live music in the bar and restaurants at night. And we greatly appreciate the friendliness and enthusiasm of the entertainment team - Orlando, Denis, Jayke, Junior, and many others. Great customer service. Thank you for another wonderful vacation! No question, we'll come again.
“Such a pleasant experience!”
We had such a wonderful, super relaxing experience at this resort - i would recommend it to all my friends. I have stayed in Santa Maria before - in Melia Las Dunas and Iberostar Ensenachos. And i can say that this resort is now at the top of my list. 1 1/2 hour bus ride which was a lot of fun in daytime, you can see a lot of Cuban life and the tour guide is awesome - you can also buy beer/soft drinks beside the bus for the ride (1 or 2 pesos each). Check in was fun! There was music, cold drink and dancers to welcome us. Our room was facing the pool - it was a nice room with AC and a mosquito net that made our bed look romantic. Hot water takes about 3-5 minutes to come so just wait and it will get there. Breakfast at buffet was amazing! Omelets were made to your order by Frank who is so nice and toast/pancakes were made by Daniel who is also very nice and he can put chocolate sauce on them which is sooo yummy. Lunch at the Beach Grill Restaurant was delicious - fresh bbq of chicken, steaks, wings, tomatoes, sweet peppers, sausages then you can order fresh made calamari and fish of the day - all very good . There was a little buffet choice of salads and pasta and a table with fruit (mango, papaya, pineapple, guava, passion fruit, honeydew) and desserts. Dinner in buffet was also very good - fresh fish/chicken/beef made to your liking; pasta station; fried rice station, daily soup, plenty of cold meat/cheese/salami/fish. Again fruit and desserts. We went to Japanese, French and Mediterranean a la carte and all were good. Bars provided very fast service and apologized when they couldn't get to you quickly enough. Pina Coladas and cappuccinos were most excellent. Beach had plenty of chairs/umbrellas due to low season, beautiful sand and ocean as always in Santa Clara. No snorkeling in this area so you either have to walk to another resort for better snorkeling or take a tour. We did a speed boat tour which had 30 min of speed boat (you get your own little one with 2 people to sit in and you follow the leader, really fun) then you do snorkeling afterwards (they give you gear and take you to a small coral reef which was amazing - bring bread to feed fish and you will see how much fun that is). Lots of mosquitoes due to low season weather so bring plenty of sprays and creams - there is a truck that goes by i think every 2 days and sprays the resort which works wonders. Nightly entertainment was good enough to watch, the most that we enjoyed were the live Cuban bands that played Cuban music. We gave tips to everyone and no one really expected to get tips so all were appreciative. Tennis coach, Yovani, is awesome - very nice and a good coach - i played with him a couple of times. Arel is great at showing archery, we enjoyed his company. All the staff are always smiling, super nice, and always greeting everyone - it's a lot more fun if you get to know them, their names and talk to them - because next time you see them, it's like seeing a friend. When we were leaving, we were hugging and kissing the staff and that was the saddest part for us. The only thing i would improve is the desserts. I'm a big dessert fan. The one i liked the most was ice cream - can't go wrong and there were syrups and toppings so that was fun. But i could never find a good cake or pastry. Of course there were plenty of both but all tasted a bit dull. Never the less, if i wanted dessert - i could always get something so no bid deal. Also, a few nights there was a very nice cook preparing a dessert made of fried banana/pineapple with a crepe - this was very yummy but he wasn't around every night. It would be awesome to see him cook something else as well - maybe do this dish one night and the next night do maybe waffles with toppings or deep fried things like deep friend ice cream in dough. We LOVED the resort, LOVED the staff - everything was really great and we fully re-charged our batteries. We would love to come back but might explore other resorts and possibly go to other countries. Hope to see you all soon - lovely people at Melia Cayo Santa Maria - HUGS AND KISSES TO YOU ALL!
“Thanks for the much needed R & R!! ”
We recently returned from our 6th visit to MCSM (our home away from home). Our stay from May 30th to June 6th was once again filled with much needed rest and relaxation. I won't go into the 1 1/2 hour bus ride to the resort as everybody mentions it. It is a nice ride that we are prepared for and once again we had a great tour guide to and from the resort. Upon arrival we were checked in quite quickly and were pleasantly excited that our specific room number request had been granted. It is a newly painted room with new linens and an awesome view of the pool. We were also told as it was low season that the buffet would only be open for breakfast (fri, sat and sun) and then breakfast and supper from Monday on. It was disappointing as we do prefer the buffet. However we did find good selections at the beach grill and the a la cartes although not our first choice were satisfactory. We took in the nightly shows which were once again entertaining and full of talent. We went to the disco, a 5 minute walk from the resort which was fun. They have changed things--it is now free to go in and you pay for drinks as you order them. This change is definitely more appealing to those who don't drink and used to have to pay 10 CUC's just to dance. The market just beyond the spa was once again filled with nice souvenirs to bring home. I took in a 30 minute massage at the spa and it was just what these tired old bones needed. It felt great and was well worth the pesos! There were some new faces in the entertainment crew which we would have liked to have gotten to know a little better however they didn't seem as open to developing a rapport with us as we have been accustomed to in the previous years. Among these new faces there were our old amigos Arel, Denise, Ernesto (Tai Chi), Daike and DJ Alex. Once again it was great to see them. Some however were missing, Lazaro was on holiday and Ernesto has transferred to another resort. They were surely missed!! I won't say that the resort isn't looking its age from when we first started visiting (2009). We did experience issues with the A/C which was never really fixed for the week but we shrugged it off and spent lots of time on the balcony that had a nice view and breeze. And one night we had no water which was fixed by morning and we had plenty of pressure however had to let it run for 10 mins or so to get it warm. We are seeing some renovations (as previously mentioned with our room). We go there with the mind set that it is Cuba and paint etc...aren't readily available like here. After all we go for the beach, and the friendly atmosphere NOT the decor. All in all another great vacation was had by all and the countdown is on for the same time same place next year. “Never disappoints ”
Just returned from another wonderful stay at this resort. On our most recent stay we stayed at another resort because we had friends getting married there. It does not compare to quality of Melia Cayo Santa Maria. The customer service is exceptional, the staff always going out of their way to make you feel welcome and accommodate you. The entertainment team are exciting and friendly. The food is still great. Thank you for another wonderdul visit. We will be back.
very nice and good hotel
In an island paradise off the northern coast of Cuba stands the Meliá Cayo Santa María hotel, especially designed for the enjoyment of couples and families, surrounded by beautiful beaches and lush tropical vegetation. This property offers facilities for incentives groups and a special wedding and honeymoon program. A perfect complement for an unforgettable holiday. It is 6 miles away from the local airport "Las Brujas", 31miles away from downtown Caibarién, and 72 miles away from Santa Clara's International Airport "Abel Santamaría".
