      Varadero Airport

Juan Gualberto Gomez Airport was built in 1989 and inaugurated by Fidel Castro,[3] thus replacing the old Varadero airport located in Santa Marta, currently known as Kawama Airport. The airport was named after a journalist, fighter for the Cuban Independence and black rights activist in Cuba Juan Gualberto Gómez (1854–1933). The terminal building has shops for tourists (including rum, cigars, T-shirts, books, carvings, pharmaceuticals), a large departures lounge cafeterias and a VIP lounge. A VIP card is available by paying $30/person to the local tour company representative. This allows the departing passenger to bypass the queues for check-in, have an agent take your departure tax to the correct official for you, and bypass any lines for passport control. The passenger is then taken to the VIP lounge which provides free food and drink (including alcoholic beverages).[4] The ground handling equipment is imported mainly from North America. There are four jet bridges, but air stairs are used for the remaining aircraft parking spaces on the apron by the terminal. Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport (IATA: VRA, ICAO: MUVR), formerly known as Varadero Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto de Varadero), is an international airport serving Varadero, Cuba and the province of Matanzas. The airport is located closer to the city of Matanzas than to Varadero. The closest airport to Varadero is Kawama Airport. In 2009, the airport handled 1.28 million passengers,[2] making it the second busiest airport in Cuba after José Martí International Airport in Havana.

        “5* Hotel??? What a joke, I'd rate it 3* & that's being very generous ”
We stayed here in August, upon arrival there was works to the reception foyer & toilets, which lasted for our entire 7 days stay. The room we were allocated for 3 Adults was a joke, electric fittings hanging off the walls, air conditioning smelling very moisty, a 'so called bed' a concrete slab which an adult was supposed to have slept on. This room was supposed to have been newly renovated, 'erm, I don't think so'. The restaurant had sparrows flying around and landing on food, it was so bad they had to release a hawk to scare off the birds. The food was so good that it was our first holiday that we all came back a stone lighter. After complaining we were moved to another room the following day, again light fittings hanging off, bathroom door missing & giant sized cockroaches were regular visitors in the bathroom. VERY POOR!!!

        Poor Poor

“Not a family resort! Very disappointed ”
We just got back from Paradisus Varadero ...Well, this is my first review. But I had to do it!!! Let me start from something good about it. VERY FRIENDLY STAFF. OUR ROOM WAS VERY CLEAN ALL THE TIME. ( our cleaning lady even changed our beach towels for us) Waiters are very helpfull and friendly also. But that was it ...... We arrived to paradisus very late. By " we" I mean me my husband and my 2 babies, 2yo and 1yo. And it was around 2 am. At the lobby we were told that our luggage will be brought to our room, that never happened. We had to carry our suitcases to our room ourselves.(same thing on the way back home) Room was clean. But do not believe any of pictures online.... very old furniture, very old bathroom, if any of you planning trip with babies, NOT BABY FRIENDLY room at all !!!! Lots of sharp corners, cold tile floors, lots of steps etc... In general hotel was clean, but need some major renovations. Cracked tables at the lobby, dirty stained couches, I can go on and on... Staff is very nice, except managers and reception. Those people never knew whats going on and where....also very unfriendly. Talking about staff...I was asked by some workers if I can leave some of my kids clothes for them after trip.... (huh?) At the end: 2 t-shirst gone missing plus brand new pair of crocks.... was couple of rainy days, so it was a lot of sea weed on the beach- which never got cleaned up. We had to walk through huge (!!!!!) Piles of it to get to the ocean. Also looooooooots of cigarette butts!!!!! Lots of broken glasses and plastic cups all over the beach. Again, very friendly and helpful staff that was helping to put us our chairs. Food.... Thats the most painful part. I wasnt expecting anything great from Cuban resort, but this was something.... No kids menu ANYWHERE. No simple food. Spices, lots of it everywhere. No even oatmeal!!!!! And timing.... completely off with kids schedule! !!!. At lunch time I was struggling to find something for them to eat. Buffet open at 1 pm, 24 hour bar dont cook anything untill 12 and my kids are hungry at 11, because they napping at 12. Thank God I took some ziplock bags and I had to grab something for them at breakfast time. Overall, we had a good time. Because we had each other. And babysitters were very nice and helped us with kids when we were going out. One more thing! Its says all over Paradisus ads that they have free wi-fi everywhere in the hotel. Lie! Only at the lobby and only gor extra $. I don't think we will come back to this resort. Regards

this resort is good for relaxing The problem is that you have to get early out of your be, to lay a towel on your choice of bed, otherwise you end up with a bad place The bars are fantastic and the staff is extremely friendly as all the cubans. Rooms are nice however be prepared that not everything works as you wish. Lots of choices of restautants but do not expedt too much of the food It is reasonable but no fine. Very good for relaxing a few days after seeing the beautiful island

        “This is not a 5 Star hotel. It's 3 # stars at best ”
I stayed here one night and can't see why the call it a 5 star hotel. The food was 1/2 star, the only thing eatable at the buffet was the cheese and the cold cuts. Anything that was prepared by the chefs were over cooked and lacked flavor. The buffet set up is horrible, the trays are not placed in a flowing fashion. I found myself confused and looking for side dishes from one side of the restaurant to the other, I got a workout just looking for the food, and the left it all on my plate because it was horrible. The breakfast was terrible, the sausages, bacon and eggs were not eatable. The lounge area was very nice, but one lounge does not make a hotel. The rooms are spacious, buy good luck if you have hot water, if you like cold showers you are fine. The staff seems to be too busy stealing the food instead of tending to the customers. I don't not recommend this hotel because it's extremely over priced for what you get.

        “Happy Anniversary”
My wife and I just recently returned from a quick getaway to celebrate our 20 th wedding anniversary. Never having been to Varadero (have been to santa Maria and Cayo Coco in cuba) before I was of course was concerned about various things based on other reviews I had read. I can honestly say, that everything was positive! I was able to connect with the resort prior to leaving and Massiel was extremely helpful in setting up reservations for us, and we even got a cake at our anniversary dinner. Our room was quite fine, we were not able to get into Royal service as they were full, but i can honestly say, not sure that it would have made things any better as we would have had to trek over to the beach anyways and other than Royal restaurant, which we did eat at, I didn't spend much time in the room. Royal service is great and we have experienced at another property and for sure would do again, but for these four days it was quite fine where we were. We found food to be all good. No complaints. The buffet for breakfast was always good--fresh made omelettes, pancakes etc..., lunch we ate at beach grill or poolside and was quite fine and dinners were ala carte and once at Buffet. I am sure if someone wants to complain they can find reason--but i really had none. Beach was quite nice, but I was surprised that seaweed was not cleaned up. Other resorts had little or none at all in front--so from a visual appearance made it look less appealing. There also is some coral, rocks etc...closer to the ending of the beach near the point--- just be careful as you enter the water --moving down towards the middle of the beach made it much more user friendly to enter and exit water. Bars were spread throughout beach--selection of drinks was a little more limited but was sufficient Animation team was great to get the day started with dancing lessons and beach volleyball but not high pressure--which is good! Overall, after many trips to Mexico and the DR my faith in Cuba as a destination is on the rise. Service is great, staff at all locations are friendly and food continues to improve. Although i would still be conscious of my choice of resort i would definitely head back! Thanks Paradisus for making our time a memorable one! Hope to see you again sooner than later

        “Very good...for Cuba! ”
Ok - here are my thoughts & experiences: - check in was easy & quick - the rooms were extremely spacious as were the balcony's - the bathroom was run down - the rooms were kept clean & cleaning staff did a great job - we were fortunate to book restaurants 5 of our 7 nights, but people we talked to were not so lucky and extremely frustrated - one guy that takes reservations; goes for two hour lunches, computer breaks down, reacts better to complimentary people - would not recommend the Mexican restaurant - Japanese restaurant was the best - was pissed off that one of the restaurants was only for couples at a family resort - serving staff were AWESOME everywhere we went especially at the buffet - drink selection is minimal - best drinks/cocktails were at the bar in the lobby - pool was massive & clean...GORGEOUS - resort was not overly busy which was great; didn't have to fight for a seat at the pool - appreciated big (purple) pool towels in the room ready to go - gorgeous beaches I would recommend this hotel.

“Great Hotel with Very Beautiful Beach ”
Very beautiful beach (the best in Varadero) with excellent food (fish & shrimps) and warm service. 5 stars. I spent with my wife one of the most beautiful vacations for one whole week. The staff from room services, reception, dancers, musician are wonderful - they make you feel in Paradise. The food was great with a lot of different choices - especially the coconut coming from the surrounding palm trees and served to you at the beach. Rooms were very clean and spacious but a little old but beds and covers were all fresh and everything else was perfect. Also every day room service would do a nice thing with the towels on our beds (see picture). Greetings to all staff and management. Lots of beautiful memories. Cuba was awesome, Varadero was great, and Paradisus was superb.

Nice, in the best area of Varadero
In the best area of the beach in Punta Francés, in Cuba's main coastal resort, stands the Paradisus Varadero Hotel, which is harmoniously integrated into a natural environment of gardens and exuberant vegetation. As a complement to the establishment's offers, the marinas Gaviota and Chapelin are three and four kilometers, respectively, from the hotel. The hotel is 30 kilometers from Juan Gualberto Gómez International Airport, which is the main airway to the resort.
