“Nice Quiet Resort ”
Our holiday at eh Sol Cayo Santa Maria, Cuba from November 14-21/14.We arrived at our hotel at 12:30 pm and were welcomed by drinks and friendly staff, unfortunately our room was not going to be ready until 3pm. It turned out that we were not in our room until 4:30 pm. not a great way to start our trip. The hotel grounds were beautiful, it is a very spread out resort. The beach is fantastic lots of beach area, and the water was warm. The most amazing thing about this trip was the staff. Hats off to them especially the staff at the pool bar, Yoel and the other cook. The rooms were nice but needed major renovations, but very clean. I only have three complaints, the food was awful, same items everyday at the buffet. The pools were not cleaned the whole week I was there, sure they put shock in them every night but they needed to be vacuumed. The small water ponds at the lobby bar are disgusting with green stagnant water. they need to do something about this as it is at the front of the resort as you come in, and in this area is where all the mosquitoes and no see ums are. Our holiday was good overall, meet alot of nice people, but we will not be going back to this resort. Going to try Holgin in April.
“Great Value - Down to Earth - Great Seafood an Pizza Restaurant”
This resort is solidly a great value. For the price it is hard to beat, and the staff is very attentive and helpful. The seafood restaurant on the beach, La Picuá, is a phenomenal find, serving whole grilled red snapper, calamares and much more. I would add to that the Pizzaria - Los Flamencos. We had a great meal there too. Our friends who came with us and were staying at the Buenavista joined us for lunch at these two places and found the found the food to be excellent. So that is a tip for you if you want to skip the buffet, these places are great choices. I had a room with premium ocean view. The sea view and the sound of the surf was great, however, the view of the full moon rising over the horizon was priceless. I enjoyed the room and the housekeeping staff did a great job of keeping the place neat. The resort is the oldest one on the Island and more of a budget place, so you will find that there are things like chips in the tile in the bathroom and small deficiencies like this. For me, this just adds to the character. I am the type who likes a laid back place, relaxing, but it does not have to be perfect. That is why I go to the Sol, for the atmosphere, laid back style and add to that the clothing optional beach space to the east of the last exit to the beach. In the past there was a fish pond that went around the piano bar and lobby of the resort. At one time there were large perch in there. The fish are not there any longer and the water is rather stagnate now. I did get no see um bites when I was in the lobby watching a fabulous cuban band on the first night there. So I would certainly recommend that the management of the resort fix that, the resort is really a gem and becoming of something more than the pool of greenish water encircling the front of it. I would definately come back, the staff were amazing and the value is in the order of "a rare find". Also I find the beach in front of this place to be my favourite. I will be back. Thanks for everything.
“Lovely place to stay ”
We had a lovely stay in this delightful hotel. It has a lovely Caribbean feel as opposed to some of the modern chic but impersonal hotels. I have mobility issues and so they had put me in a ground floor room. As rooms are lifted off the ground I had 7 steps into my room but I noticed that some rooms do have a slope. Our shower was over the bath but there were grab bars and I managed OK. We stayed during the quieter season and the hotel was not full, but it is very spacious and is set in beautiful gardens.which surround the large swimming pools. With just one exception the staff were really friendly and were really keen to ensure that we were well looked after during our stay: we were treated like family! The beautiful beach has a lifeguard and plenty of sunbeds with varying amounts of shade. The restaurant had a wide variety of food & it was constantly replenished, it was very clean and meat could be cooked for you while you waited, although some of it was a bit tough. Waitresses in the dining room were delightful and attentive. Our only niggle was that some of the water features were either empty or stagnant and if we sat near them after dark we got eaten alive by insects. We would happily return to this hotel and would recommend it,
“awesome stay at the sol ”
stayed for 9 days at sol cayo santa maria. the best thing about the sol is the great staff. the best was javier and joel at the bars. this is the first property on the island and is about 12 years old. i would say it is a 4 star resort. the others on the island are all 5 star. rooms are spacious and clean. the bed was firm. bottle water everday. this is a small resort, great for rest and relaxation.i was expecting the food to be terrible but i was pleasantly surprised. there are 2 beach restaurants where we went for lunch. one has fresh pizza and spaghetti and the other has fish, chicken and burgers. the buffet has omelet and crepe stations in the morning and carving, fish or rice, meat and pasta station for dinner. the only downfall was the al a carte italian could have been better. there is a panoramic bus that costs a peso to ride that will take you around the island and to a shopping center. we did the catamaran. lunch and dolphin excursion which was 85 pesos and was well worth it. this was a great resort and would definitely go back..
“Pleasant Stay ”
I have just returned from Santa Maria (Sol Cayo hotel) and I already miss the beauty, charm and intimate atmosphere of this place. I traveled alone and was looking for smaller place - can't stand these huge, overcrowded, noisy, "zoo"- like resorts. The purpose of my trips is relaxation, peace and quiet and that is what I have found during my stay at Sol. It is not a five star hotel, but it is good enough to deliver great service, good food, clean rooms with all the basics needed, and some rooms with breathtaking views. My room was the second floor room with ocean view, a little distant, but very nice view indeed. There were a few "flaws": not working in-room safe (probably just bad battery? but I managed without it and my stuff was still safely stored), I had to use my muscles to open and close the balcony door; luckily I am a strong girl, so it was not a big problem. Little things like that do not bother me much. I am sure the stuff would fix them if I reported them. I did not want to waste my time running to the reception; I wanted to spend my time relaxing on the beach. The waves brought some seaweeds to the beach. It did not look pretty, but there were plenty of available chairs which could be moved to a nice, clean spot. Overall, I was happy with my room, with the buffet food, with the service. The weather also turned to be almost perfect. I only have one request to the management/ staff: I know you are hard working, busy people. Please, try to find a moment now and then and some useless food leftovers and feed the cats!! I am not a weirdo, I am just fanatic animal lover whose heart starts crying seeing bunch of 8 or 10 hotel resident cats who are so skinny. They are living creatures with same basic needs for food for survival as humans. So please, remember about these poor hungry guys!!
“And...back to the SOL!!! ”
I continue to return to the SOL because of the staff, location, beach...and everything else there! Arrived 2 days before my birthday to a wonderful Ocean view room, rum and perks I did not have to pay extra for. The day of my birthday, there was a card and balloons in my room. Laura is awesome and my room was very clean all week. The staff at the SOL treat everyone like family and they do their best to please everyone! Some of the guests I can say a lot less about... I witnessed a woman pounding her fists on the counter and YELLING at Yasmany at the front desk about not having a bottle of water in her room. He kept smiling and found her water...she continued yelling. WOW...he took it all in stride as he continued to apologize and smile. Ernesto is awesome at the pool bar as well as Osmany and Yoel. Also a few new ones..didn't catch their names. The SOL is my own personal escape from snow and cold. LOVE IT THERE and I have stayed at a few different places in Santa Maria. Nothing can compare to the service and personality of the place. Can't wait to see you again in February SOL!!!!

Cayo Santa Maria
We enjoyed our 2 weeks at the new Barcelo Cayo Santa Maria Caribe Tropical resort. Overall the weather was primarily sunny. Having stayed at nearby Santa Maria resorts many times recently,we were prepared for the possible conditions at the Barcelo. The staff as usual was very pleasant. In particular, waiters Madelysis & Carlos were very pleasant and on top of their areas. The morning cooking staff workers Barbara and Addel were eager to please. It was good to see Humberto again in charge of the main bar. But when it came to the best pool bartender, you had to be waited on by Rafael at the CSM Barcelo Colonial resort ..... by far the most pleasant Barcelo worker on Santa Maria! We enjoyed the a la carte dinners at the Italian, Mediterranean and Gormet dinning rooms. Of course the mosquitoes were bad especially at sun down. If you don't bring bug killer and long slacks, you are really going to be a tasty treat. The rooms are new and fully equipped and nicely furnished. The gardens are well cared for by the many gardeners and exhibit a variety of tropical plants. This year we were there during the white/yellow butterfly mating season. Hundreds of butterflies were on the move. Quite the sight! The Barcelo property is huge. It extends for kilometers in all directions. Although the hotel was only 35% full, there were always lineups at the grill areas for lunch and supper. Much of the resort is closed off during the low season. There are definitely shortages of beach palapas and shady areas at the pool. Nonetheless, this is one of the cleanest and sandiest beaches in all of Cuba. Most of the tourists were from Ontario, Quebec and Britain. There were many children at the resort in July.
