Rating Bacunayagua Bridge
This bridge marks the territorial limit by way of the Via Blanca Highway of the provinces of Havana and Matanzas, and so both territories squabble for this genuine jewel of Cuban architecture of an extension of 114 metres and heights of around 110 metres. The construction was finished in 1960 and the arch of the bridge was made out of laminated metal, set up in two sections, each one turning until they were locked in their permanent position. The girders weigh at least 47 tonnes each. It can be considered the most complex and daring construction of its type in Cuba. The main architect was the engineer Luis Saenz Duplace.

For over two centuries, in recognition of its rich cultural life, Matanzas has been known as "Cuba's Athens." For obvious reasons, it is also called "the city of bridges.",
The city was founded on the shores of a beautiful bay in 1693. At that time, it was called San Carlos y San Severino de Matanzas. Its splendid buildings are eclectic in style.,
The area surrounding the city has some singularly beautiful features. The Pan de Matanzas (Matanzas Bread Loaf) Hill and the Yumurí Valley are particularly entrancing. Places to visit in the city include the Sauto Theater, the Triolet Drug Store and the San Carlos Church.,
Immortalized by painters, poets and musicians, Matanzas is just a few minutes' drive from Varadero Beach and near the Zapata Peninsula.,
The city of Matanzas, capital of the province of the same name, is in northwestern Cuba, 100 km. (62 miles) east of Havana and around 18 minutes from Varadero Beach. An excellent highway links Matanzas with the nation's capital.

“It's a bridge. So what? ”
Supposedly Cuba's tallest (112 metres), it is indeed a tall bridge, but I think anyone from Canada has probably traversed a number of them in the run of a week. Is it a true tourist "site"? Not really. There's a little bar that makes killer pina coladas, but the cost of a taxi to the place (about 30 CUCs) just... More
“Beautiful View ”
I visited Mirador de Bacunayagua on Thursday, June 12th on our way back to Varadero from Havana. It was not very busy at all. You can get drinks and snacks and they were also playing some music. The view is spectacular but there isn't much more than that so it was a very quick visit. Definitely worth the ten minute... More
