  • Jose Marti Revolution Square is located in Havana
  • Capital of Cuba and the country's administrative, political, cultural and scientific center, it is also the capital of two provinces: City of Havana and Havana. Though only around 280 square miles (727 square kilometers) in size-0.65 percent of the archipelago's total area.

The Old Havana and system of forts led UNESCO to declare it a part of world heritage in 1982. Founded on its present site in 1519, the settlement of San Cristobal de La Habana prospered mainly due to its bay, which was a natural port of call for ships sailing to and from the New World. Starting in 1634, because of its strategic location, San Cristobal de La Habana was considered the key to the New World-as attested to by royal letters patent-and the main defense of the West Indies.

The Cuban capital consists of an immense number of buildings in a wide range of architectural styles, built in the course of nearly five centuries. These styles range from the pre-baroque to the baroque, neo-Gothic, neoclassical, eclectic, art noveau and art-deco, to the modern.

Alejo Carpentier, one of Cuba's most famous authors, called it "the city of columns" and focused attention on its streets, which he considered a perennially rich show of life, humanity and contrasts that was bound to entertain any observer.

Over 14 kilometers of excellent beaches lie to the east of the Cuban capital. To the south, a green belt contributes to a healthful atmosphere.

    Plaza de la Revolucion
The Plaza is one of the world's largest city squares, measuring 72000 square meters. The square is notable as being where many political rallies take place and Fidel Castro and other political figures address Cubans. Fidel Castro has addressed more than a million Cubans on many important occasions, such as 1 May and 26 July each year. The square is dominated by the which features a 109 m (358 ft) tall tower and an 18 m (59 ft) statue. The National Library, many government ministries, and other buildings are located in and around the the Plaza. Located behind the memorial are the closely guarded offices of President Fidel Castro. Opposite the memorial on the far side of the square is the famous Che Guevara image with the slogan 'Hasta la Victoria Siempre' (Forever Onwards Towards Victory) that identifies the Ministry of the Interior Construction of the square and the monument commenced during the Presidency of Fulgencio Batista. The square and the memorial were completed in 1959 (the year Fidel Castro came to power). It was originally called Plaza Cívica (Civic Square). After the Cuban Revolution (1959), it was renamed "Plaza de la Revolución" or "Revolution Square." An elevator allows access the top of the memorial, the tallest building in the city.

    Most Famous
The Plaza de la Revolución is probably Havana's most famous square. This is where Fidel Castro used to address crowds during his hours-long speeches and tirades against the US and the West. This is also a major venue for any sort of official event that brings together large numbers of Cubans (like Montcada Day). If you go when there's nothing going on, the square can feel quite empty - that just gives you an idea of how many people pack into this place during official events. The Square

    “Drab Soviet-style space ”
We came here as part of a tour. Worth a look, but don't expect much. For a significant space it felt very drab. Some shopping mall car parks have a more impressive feel. The Revolution Square in Santiago de Cuba outshone this for sure. Mind you the buildings around the square with Che and Castro are worth a look and... More

    “Obligatory stop ”
Most groups stop here on the way from the airport. It is your nod to the Revolution. Although pre-revolutionary, it resembles more the Soviet style plazas and Mach grounds-not too dissimilar in feel to Kim Il Sung Square inPyongyang.

“Not necessary place to visit ”
huge place surrounded by ugly buildings. Not really necessary place to visit in Havanna. It's the place where the big mass demonstrations take place ? in older times marches in front of Fidel Castro and with Fidel's unforgettable 4-hour speeches

    “Worthwhile to See ”
I visited in November 2014 as part of a tour seeing Havana and local sights. The square is large, and a great spot to stop and take pictures. The buildings around the square with pictures of Che and Castro definitely worth seeing.

    “Atmosphere is terrific ”
Standing in the square and looking around at the Government buildings you can feel the hairs on the back of your neck start to stand up. You can just imagine the crowds here in bygone days screaming and cheering. Still have speakers up for parades now.

    “Revolution Square ”
If visiting this site, please bring a tour guide to tell you about it or do some research beforehand. To the naked eye it looks like a rather large parking lot in the middle of nothing; but, on closer look and armed with a bit of knowledge this place is so much more. This is a very important space in... More

“The most important political center in Cuba ”
Built in 1950´s by Batista´s son it is the most important political place in Havana and Cuba and Castro´s favorite place to deliver his 6 and 7 hour long speeches, specially at the beginning of the Revolution. Lots of important government ministries surround the square. It is an obligatory stop if you are visiting Havana.
